Willem Van Der Does Born in Rotterdam, 20 April 1889. He came to Indonesia ca. 1918 as a civil servant to survey the country. In this function he traveled all over the archipelago. The artist participated in several group exhibitions in Jakarta, Medan and Surabaya between 1918 and1939. He returned to the Netherlands in 1946, where he settled in Zeist. Does was a painter, illustrator and draughtsman of harbor scenes, city views, and landscapes, in an accurate impressionistic style. Van der Does came to some areas in Indonesia such as Medan, Bandung, Batavia, Surabaya, Malang and learnt their environments. His works had a fascinating technique, showing that he was an academic painter. The lines produced by his light brush stroke were allowed to appear clearly in canvas, so that Does’s works here and there showed the rhythmical and soft brush stroke. His colors were bright and light. And the objects that he painted were the environment around him, partly exposing the natural scenery. The choice of his themes showed that Does was an adventurous painter who was able to look at the objects with his artistic sensibility. Van der Does often painted themes about Surabaya especially the harbor scenes. He left Indonesia in 1946, and lived in town, Zeist, the Netherlands, until he passed away on February 3, 1966. During his living in Netherlands, he still painted about Surabaya based on his sketch and memory.

Widayat Widayat is a famous painter with “decora-magic” style, which means the works were fully decorated and can produced magical effect. His works are based on his daily life experiences. Such experiences he imparts through the representations of human and animal figures, plants and imaginary beings, characterized by spontaneity and uninterrupted strong lines. Most of his paintings can give magnificent excitement by his ability in creating stylistic forms of trees, birds, fishes, or his favorite animal. The form also gives decorative motif with the use of hard and dark color producing textures and subtle impression. Widayat paints freely, unburdened by anything except that he always attempts at infusing contents, giving significance to his imaginary space by means of symbols and indications. Watching Widayat’s works, we are taken to archaic natures and to the daily life, without perspective, and without criticize for something. We may remark them as beautiful and alluring, crowding our retinas, innocently accepting reality, fascinatingly interpretable, and mystically thrilling the space.

Gerard Pieter Adolfs Adolfs spent his youth in Java and received at home his first artistic inspirations. His father, Gerardus Cornelis Adolfs, was an architect and a versatile amateur (painter, photographer, piano and violin player as well as a pole vaulter). Adolfs studied architecture in Amsterdam. After graduating, he was drawn back to Java, where he designed houses in Yogyakarta, Surakarta and Surabaya. But soon he swapped the drawing pen for the drypoint, pencil and brush and from then on dedicated his whole life to painting. He was already well known as a talented advertising illustrator, when in 1924 he was first introduced to the public of Yogyakarta as a painter, water-colourist and graphic artist. Each year Adolfs travelled for a few months. He had studios in Florence, Rome, Vienna, Budapest, Prag and - together with his Japanese friend Léonard Tsuguharu Fujita - in Paris and exhibited his works of art internationally (Netherlands Indies, Japan, Singapore, United States, England, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, France, Switzerland…). The main subjects of his work were scenes of Java, Bali, Japan and of North Africa (market sceneries, cock-fights, landscapes and townscapes). In 1940 – shortly before the occupation of the Netherlands – Adolfs came back to Europe and settled in Amsterdam. On 22 February 1944, during an exhibition at the Kunstzaal Pollmann, the largest part of Adolfs’ paintings was destroyed by the bombardment of Nijmegen. Adolfs kept on working. He wrote and illustrated a book about his memories of Surabaya and exhibited in many well-known galleries. He lived mostly in Amsterdam - interrupted by longer stays in Scandinavia, France, Spain, Italy and North Africa. In 1967 he retired to a small village in South-Holland. On 1 February 1968, G.P. Adolfs died in ’s-Hertogenbosch, North Brabant. 016

Yunizar Yunizar takes painting as their medium to express things they are familiar with. To some artist, the expression of mind and feeling is not merely has to be obvious and real. Therefore understanding a painting needs certain comprehension and careful attention. Sometimes the understanding not only gained with full attention but can also perceive with half perceptions. Yunizar’s work embodies the beauty and purity in human creativity. Like the work of a child, Yunizar’s work is pure and crude, emerging spontaneously from what appears as his unconscious mind. Yunizar is to be commended for refusing to compromise creativity, like so many artists and galleries do, by tailoring their art or the artists they choose to represent for purely commercial reasons. What is important for Yunizar is the basic and pure creativity. He intentionally uses simple subject matter, objects which surround his daily life, and a simple painting and sketching technique to focus almost entirely on creativity and inventiveness.

Affandi Born in Cirebon, March 11, 1907. Affandi was considered as the Indonesian Artist par excellent. He was the founder of the Himpunan Pelukis Masyarakat (Community’s Artists Association (1946) and Himpunan Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Artists Association) in 1947, Affandi was committed to creating a new artistic idiom for Indonesia. In the early of 1950s he traveled to India for a grant from Indian Government, he held several one-man shows in several Indian Cities, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Italy. He received an Indonesian Art Award from the Ministry of Education and Culture (1969), the Dag Hammerskjoeld Prize from Italy (1977) and an Indonesian Government the First Class Merit (1978). His works were exhibited in major exhibitions in Asia, Europe, and the Americas and were also be acquired by major art collectors and institutions all over the world since the 1950s. Affandi prefers capturing his subjects exactly as they are by painting them as they appear in their natural setting. In this, he starts of his use of squeezing paint directly on the canvas, a style that he has used since the late fifties. He not only departs from the use of the brush, but makes use of his palms and fingers to apply the paint on the canvas. Affandi’s work exhibits a distinct rhythm full of emotional intensity. The impact of this emotion is communicated visually depending on the emotional drive of the painter himself. The expressionist painter characteristically has an urgency to simultaneously grab the movement of the moment he wants to describe, along with capturing the textures of the object, a drive that often leads him to work much more passionately compared to the naturalists, the realists, or even the impressionists. The current lot depicts a traditional Balinese mythological character known as Barong; the mythical animal personifies the king of all Good spirits, whose archenemy is Rangda, the demon queen and mother of all Evil spirits. The Barong Dance, which describes the battle between good (Dharma) and evil (Adharma), symbolises the intertwining of two opposite forces and the complex relationship between man and supernatural. His fingers wild strokes express his emotion through the spreading oil paint that captured the vitality of the Barong gesture. Affandi’s depiction of the Barong here is not only a portrayal of an extraordinary event but it also symbolizes the struggle of opposing forces inherent to the human condition. 031

Han Snel Masterpiece Singapore 16&17 August 2008 Sold SGD 180,000
Born in 1925 in Scheveningen, Holland, Han Snel arrived in Indonesia as a Dutch soldier in 1946. He had a life-long love affair with Bali, became an Indonesian citizen and lived in Ubud from 1950 until his death in 1998. Balinese themes are Han Snel’s specialism, in particular figures done in a more or expressionist style: he himself prefers to describe his manner with its very conspicuous, curved lines, as ‘roundism’. In his works, Snel focused his attention on the beauty of Balinese women. His colors were varied and lean towards the primary with contrasting area of dark shading. The graphic paintings featured stylized and somewhat elongated women in rich, sensuous colors. His visual imageries, subdued colors and fine lines captured the essence of Ubud and the island as a place where serenity reigned and simple people led an honest life.

Lee Man Fong was one of a rare artist who received honor by critics and collectors across Asia. As an Oriental artist, Lee man Fong has renewed and transformed Western oil painting by imbuing it with the essence of Chinese ink painting, achieving a mutual identity between subject and object, at the same time vastly opening the restrictions on traditional Chinese painting. In short, he created a unique “Man-Fong style”. The present lot is a female figure posing in nude style, very rare objects and very special as one of his best work produced in the period. Besides his great intense in observing the nature especially animal such as gold fish and doves, women were Lee’s most cherished subject. His figures reflect a wealth of thought and inner content. His portraits excel equally in form and expression, vitality and faithfulness, and rank above works. Lee Man Fong’s portraits are remarkable life-like, fresh and moving and at the same time full of artistic individuality. This resulted from a strict awareness of values and rigorous selectivity.

He took his formal school at the Indonesian Institute of Fine Arts, Yogyakarta where he won the Patisara Affandi Adi Karya Awards in 1999. Alit’s paintings have shown the tendency to become a media for social commentary. He does not purely make social criticism of the wisdom or practices of the ruling politics. He only goes as far as demonstrating the problems of society through the language of his paintings, according to his own perceptive and perception. Most of his works demonstrate strong characteristics, narrative and descriptive crowd in all kinds of poses and scenes that filled every corner of the canvas. He never left the canvas empty. The canvas seems full with parade of masses like a colossal theater performance. Perhaps this has become Alit’s concern towards all kinds of social problems amongst the populace. He seems does not merely make social criticism towards the ruling politics, but he only goes to describe the condition in his painting through his own perspective and perception. Awards: 2000 – The finalist of the Phillip Morris Art Awards 2000 – The finalist of the Indonesian Art Awards 1999 – The Pratisara Affandi Adi Karya 1999 – The nominee of 40 Best Winsor & Newton Awards 60

Hendra Gunawan There is no doubt that Hendra Gunawan is one of Indonesia’s greatest pioneers of modern art. Using non-traditional, European visual elements, he nevertheless created works which were Indonesian in feeling and in experience. Though Hendra’s art was, from the very beginning focused towards celebrating common people and their struggle that depicts his deep feeling and irony inspiring perspective of life’s most fundamental issue: freedom and hunger, Hendra also love the land and paint some in his several themes. He used the natural painting such as mountain and beach as background to his main subject. The stylized figures, landscapes features and the decorative approach to color are perhaps influenced by Javanese illustration and design. Hendra’s paintings have formed a modern Indonesian folk art where they can be seen as the illustrations of a new mythology. Like many painters, Balinese traditions have become such a unique and interesting object to paint. From the ancient motifs, the dancers, the boat, the ceremony, people’s daily life and not to forget the Barong dances. The present lot illustrated the Balinese mythological character known as Barong; the mythical animal personifies the king of all Good spirits (Rangda). Tiny figures on the background still shows Hendra distinctive stylized figures of exaggerated profiles, with long necks, protruding noses. The rich color inhabit a breathtakingly beautiful paradise of fertile land, rich seas, majestic mountains, rivers, and spectacular beaches. 075

Irsam Irsam was born in Ketandan, Klaten Central Java in June 24th, 1942. Since childhood he had dreamed to be a painter because he did not want to be like his father, a farming labors. He took his study at the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) Yogyakarta (1959 - 1965) and become a lecturer at that school (1965 – 1967). He had held his first exhibition in 1967 in Jakarta. He received an award from the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. In 1980 he also joined in the Contemporary Asian Art Exhibition in Fukuoka Art Museum Japan. His works have specific style. His great fondness in Wayang has given a large contribution in his artworks. He was famous of artist with decorative style with rich colors, patterns of dots and lines and textures. He rarely left an empty space in his paintings. He varied his themes of paintings into; 1) Daily activities, 2) Mythology and 3) Mask. The present lot was one of his daily activities themes. This theme is expressed in paintings with simple compositions. They often depict subjects of human’s activities without showing their time and space. His paintings are so attractive as they are done with decorative style full of ornamental patterns. Decorative style is a style that allows wide range of expression. It almost has no rule. It is possible to paint a human body without minding the real proportion or the anatomy. In principle, the style of decorative art is an effort to present patterns of lines, colors and textures that can express ideas with high ornamental element. Its basic principle of work is repetition of lines, dots, colors or basic shapes till they formed a (sometimes) rhythmic and consistent pattern.

Lee Man Fong Lee Man Fong was born in Canton, China, 1913. He arrived at Singapore at young age then later moved to Jakarta. He has shown great artistic talent since young. He participated in the Association’s First Art Exhibition invited by the head of the Dutch East Indies Associations (1931). Lee Man Fong was a successful commercial artist before engaged in full time painting in 1941. His successful exhibitions in Bandung and Jakarta made him a fast growing artist at that time. He received scholarship from the Dutch government to study painting in Holland (1946). In 1952 he returned to Indonesia and gained more credits as well as acknowledgement. He was officially become a presidential palace’s painter and chief curators of its collection in 1961 and compiled a 5 volume edition of President Sukarno’s art collection. He died in 1988 and remembered as a western vigorous painter and an oriental unique oil painting painter. In Lee Man Fong paintings, light is of prime importance and the subjects are consistently bathed in a luminous glow as presented in this lot. The background, unlike the flat, void spaces of Chinese paintings, is likewise illuminated by an almost mysterious glow of white sunlight. Therefore the subjects, reflecting the sun’s radiance, seem also to be lit from the back, creating the effect of “glowing silhouettes”. As to the Chinese philosophy, Gold fish is believed that the fish can bring rich and prosperity.

Hendra’s people are never passive victims of their faith; they are always depicted as active subjects. Many of his paintings depict the lives of fish seller, fruit seller, and also chicken seller. The present lot was one of the Hendra’s paintings that described the theme of the common people’s daily life. He explored their activity, capturing them movingly on canvas in his inimitable style. The deepest emotion about the struggle of common people’s life, made Hendra keep presenting people in this landscape painting even in small and tiny form. Since 1992 he had actively participated in several group exhibitions in major cities in Indonesia; Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Jakarta and Padang. Besides paintings he also produces sculptors. He received award at the Indofood Art Awards Jakarta, 2003. Since 1999, Ardison starts to paint with realistic representations of object without connecting them to any other ideas. Several of his works also become more rhythmic as he learned about the pattern and textures of woods. Next this phase developed into a figurative one that had more story motifs. His thoughts were stirred towards problems of society as he become interested in social, political and environmental issues around him. His ideas also came from reading the newspaper or watching television. It takes around one or three months to finish a work because he pays a great deal in details which is very complicated and time-consuming. Ardison takes ordinary landscapes through his simple shapes, colors and composition. His characteristic on his works shows aesthetic three-dimensional effect. The present lot Low of The Highlands (Go Green Series) may suggest Ardison’s environmental issues that he sees from a positive viewpoint. The mountain being elevated above the earth and nearer as it were to heaven, to the beginnings of things. Although the mountain is high but it will stay low and humble.

Popo Iskandar Born in Garut, December 17, 1927. Popo Iskandar started painting in 1944. He graduated from the University of Indonesia and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Besides as a painter he is also an art observer and writer. In 1980 he received art award from Indonesian Government. He has participated in many exhibitions in Indonesia as well as overseas. Popo’s career started with on-the-spot painting, capturing the concrete life events in the field. Although his early years of painting was influenced by Van Gogh’s style, there was an evidence that he had experimented further with some other styles like cubism, abstract composition, Chinese and Japanese calligraphy and other media or methods like monoprints. We could easily see his tendency to paint certain objects in repetition within the coverage of a single style, relying simply on memory and imagination. The major objects he mostly dealt with were no other than cats, roosters and leopards. These kinds of themes had become Popo’s trademark which he treated in a repetitive and minimalist manner. Popo Iskandar started painting using cats object in the early 1960s which then developed into leopards in early 1980s. Repetitive theme of cats, chickens and leopards probably has become Popo Iskandar’s main contemplation in reflecting the essence of cats, nudity or even mystery of nature. The source of his idea of cats is not the form of the cat, but rather its involvement in various situations and conditions which stimulate his ideas and imaginations. In painting a cat, he feels that he doesn’t only present it physically, but that he tries to express the meaning and the impression of the cat’s appearance for him. So, a cat for him is a totality of inspired understanding, an integrated understanding of music and poetry. Popo’s leopards strongly express smooth line as if the flow of the music. As in cats, leopards figure often shown alone or in groups. Therefore, we often see a leopard’s or cat’s face with many bodies. The moon at the background can be a symbolic shape that was not reflects the actual mean (moon, balloon or sun), but only as a circle of compositor element. The circle often used to give strong impression that surrounds the object mystery or only as the rhyme balancing. But, sometimes it was only like a dot in a sentence, as idea synchronizing.

Srihadi Soedarsono Srihadi is an artist with a deep cultural background. His integrity as a creative artist was formed through his formal education as well as through his life experiences. There are two important aspects in Srihadi’s paintings: first, the artistic value of color composition, and second, the philosophical value that reflects the meaning of life, cultural, and social value. Some of his figurative paintings, especially the dancers, look deceptively similar, and that the figures have become stereotypes, but one should try to appreciate and study the details and minimal variations. Srihadi pays particular attention to the characteristic of the dancer and the artistic form of the dance. Every dance has its language or vocabulary of movement and type of costume, all of which imbued with philosophical meaning. The dancing figures in Srihadi’s painting were characterized with the use of other elements such as mask, fan, mirror, offerings or flowers. In the present lot the figure was posing in elegant style holding a fan in front of her chest. The way she looked directed us to a stage of waiting for something or perhaps just a symbolical meaning of her own self contemplation.
