Agung Mangu Putra Mangu Putra’s works arise from intense contact with the world as a conscious expression of his main creative orientation. Representations of natural phenomena, along with the inner pulse of life, form the main stream of his search. The natural world, such as mountains and coasts, are depicted as identifiable objects. Mangu’s magnificent landscapes and volcanoes are depicted as majestic, timeless and all powerful, yet quietly dormant. They are breathtaking, yet set within an atmosphere of silent intimidating strength. It is this aspect of his work that sets Mangu apart from his predecessors. Often the scenes are dotted with Balinese villagers dressed in traditional robes for worship, perhaps reminiscent of Chinese philosopher painter’s work depicting the omnipotence of nature. Here, Mangu’s concern are not ritual ceremonies but rather the traditional culture of worship for the land; the land that scared and fundamental to our existence. Pura Besakih is a temple complex in the village of Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung in Eastern Bali, Indonesia. It is the most important, the largest and holiest temple of Hindu religion in Bali, and one of a series of Balinese temples. It has stepped terraces and flights of stairs which ascend to a number of courtyards and brick gateways that in turn lead up to the main spire or Meru structure, which is called Pura Penataran Agung. All this is aligned along a single axis and designed to lead the spiritual person upward and closer to the mountain which is considered sacred. The main sanctuary of the complex is the Pura Penataran Agung. The symbolic center of the main sanctuary is the lotus throne or padmasana which is therefore the ritual focus of the entire complex. A series of eruptions of Mount Agung in 1963, which killed approximately 1,700 people also threatened Pura Besakih. The lava flows missed the temple complex by mere meters. The saving of the temple is regarded by the Balinese people as miraculous, and a signal from the gods that they wished to demonstrate their power but not destroy the monument the Balinese faithful had erected.

Lee Man Fong Lee Man Fong was one of a rare artist who received honor by critics and collectors across Asia. As an Oriental artist, Lee man Fong has renewed and transformed Western oil painting by imbuing it with the essence of Chinese ink painting, achieving a mutual identity between subject and object, at the same time vastly opening the restrictions on traditional Chinese painting. In short, he created a unique “Man-fong style”. Besides his great intense in observing the nature especially animal such as gold fish and doves, women were Lee’s most cherished subject. His figures reflect a wealth of thought and inner content. His portraits excel equally in form and expression, vitality and faithfulness, and rank above works. Lee Man Fong’s portraits are remarkable life-like, fresh and moving and at the same time full of artistic individuality. This resulted from a strict awareness of values and rigorous selectivity. 025

Willem Gerard Hofker Willem Gerard Hofker was born on 2nd May 1902 in The Hague, the Netherlands, as a son of Gerrit Jan Hofker, public servant with the Postal Services. For a while his father was a co-worker of De Nieuwe Gids and befriended members of the Eighties movement. He named his son after the painter Willem Witsen. Willem Hofker firstly attended the Haagse Academie and later, at age 14, attended the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He was also educated by Willem Witsen and Isaac Israel who were friends of his father, an amateur artist and writer, member of the literary movement ‘de beweging van Tachtig’. In 1927 Willem Hofker won the 2nd price at the Prix de Rome. In 1930 he married Maria Rueter, also a painter, daughter of Georg Rueter, painter and lector at the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He once lived in Bali from 1938 – 1944 together with his wife, Hofker-Reuter. At this moment his Balinese landscapes and dancers are very much in demand. And also internationally the creations from Hofkers Balinese period in the last few years draw much attention. Willem Hofker lived in the Zomerdijkstraat in Amsterdam from 1934 to 1938 and from 1946 to 1967.Willem Gerard Hofker died in Amsterdam on 30th April 1981. Willem Hofker also specialized in crayon drawings of cityscapes of Amsterdam, where he mainly focused on architecture, ‘portraits’ of houses and cities. He enjoyed painting a big panoramic view of the city. His works were undoubted. His color, texture surface, and contrastive control showed his maturity of painting study. De Klokkenhof, bij de Belten, Vorden was painted in Amsterdam 1956. The sun was shining in, felt very warm. The scent of the roses and daffodils in the garden seemed very fresh, such a lovely view from the window.

Basoeki Abdullah Basoeki Abdullah born in Solo, January 27, 1915 is one of the most prominent Indonesian maestros in portrait paintings. The late artist was well-known for his realistic paintings. Besides painting of natural beauty and sensuous landscape, he is also noted for his portraits of beautiful women, as well as paintings of scenes from legends that are also tempered with the same lyrical and overly sensual treatment. His great fond of paintings women’s figure perhaps derived from his great interest in exploring the beauty of women that is attractive to paint in any way. The artist gain the public recognition after winning a painting competition held in conjunction with the Netherland’s Queen Juliana ascension to throne on 6 September 1948. There are painters who like to paint nudity. Nudity in art has generally reflected — with some exceptions — social standards of aesthetics and modesty/morality of their time in painting, sculpture and more recently in photography. At all times in human history, the human body has been one of the principal subjects for artists. It has been represented on prehistoric paintings and statutes and in all eras since. The male nude was more common in antiquity, especially in ancient Greece, but today the tendency is for the female nude body to be more highly regarded and represented.

Auke Cornelis Sonnega Born in Leeuwarden, Holland, 1910. He worked in Jakarta in 1935. He did his paintings in Parapat and Medan, North Sumatra, and Bali. He returned to Holland in 1959 and died in Den Haag in 1963. Sonnega’s paintings of Bali have attracted mtany people attention. An artist’s quest to find inspiration and spiritual contentment can take him on a long voyage far away from home. Such was the journey for Dutch artist Auke Cornelis Sonnega. Born in Leeuwarden and educated at the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Amsterdam (School of Arts and Crafts), Sonnega first set foot on Indonesian soil when he arrived in Batavia in 1935. He did his paintings in Parapat and Medan, North Sumatra, and Bali. He moved to Bali, which became a great source of inspiration for his painting. After the war settled in Ubud in fellow artist Bonnet’s old studio in Puri Kaleran and dedicated himself solely to painting. His style is fresh and unique, clearly influenced by his designer training and background. It is very influenced by Art Deco and often graphic, however, his larger canvases often transcend these limitations and can even be thought to have a mystical impact. He also made many portraits, usually of doe eyed young men (he was in the words of a long time Ubud expatriate euphemism a member of the “club”). These are very stylized and use a brightpalate with strong outlining of his subjects. Sonnega, like Bonnet, stayed in Bali until 1957 when he was forced to leave by the Indonesia authorities in the era of Confrontation. The painting becomes all the more poignant when this separation is considered – the immortalization of a reality that was to him a fulfillment of a dream. He returned to Holland in 1959 and died in Den Haag in 1963. 048

Widayat Widayat was born in Kutoarjo (Central Java, 1919) in the colonial era. After some military training, he took the apprentice study at the Indonesia Art Academy Yogyakarta under painters Hendra Gunawan, Sudarso, Trubus, and Kusnadi. Then Widayat met a Bandung Painter, Kartono Yudhokusumo from whom he got direct influence of decorative style in painting. Widayat paints freely, unburdened by anything except that he always attempts at infusing contents, giving significance to his imaginary space by means of symbols and indications. Watching Widayat’s works, we are taken to archaic natures and to the daily life, without perspective, and without criticize for something. We may remark them as beautiful and alluring, crowding our retinas, innocently accepting reality, fascinatingly interpretable, and mystically thrilling the space. Widayat studied at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta, where hebecame known as a lecturer of the Indonesian Institute of Fine Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta as well as a prominent artist. Since 1950 to 2002, Widayat participated in numerous art exhibitions in Indonesiaas well as internationally, in countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong, Netherlands,Italy, United States, and Australia. Widayat is said to be a maestro after Affandi, as published in the book “Educator and Painter” by ISI Yogyakarta in 1988. Widayat was also a revolutionary artist, and master of gardening and graphics arts. Widayat was the first artist whose exhibition was largely exhibited in the Singapore Art Museum, one of the most important museums in Southeast Asia on September 2007 and it was held for the duration of two months. According to Prof. Soedarso Sp MA, Widayat’s artistic works can be levelled with the works of Henri Rousseau (a France surrealist artist) who has been his great inspiration. Widayat’s works show an immense variety of stories about nature, life, myths, and rituals. They are rich in content, texture, and technique. Widayat’s preference for the simplification and distortion of natural forms had a profound influence on many Indonesian artists. His magic decorative style is a personal visual language mostly derived from folk motifs. He focuses on inner structure rather that outward appearance. The re-petition of basic elements are order with an underlying rhythm to create movement. The artist’s works encompass all of his varied experiences as soldier, student, teacher, and religious family man. Flora and fauna, religion and mythology, masks and portraits, and daily life all are parts of his fantasy world.

Affandi Affandi is considered as the Indonesian Artist par excellence. He was the founder of the Himpunan Pelukis Masyarakat (Community’s Artists Association) in 1946 and Himpunan Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Artists Association) in 1947. Affandi was committed to creating a new artistic idiom for Indonesia. In the early of 1950s he travelled to India with a grant from the Indian Government. Besides India, he also displayed his works in the Biennale in Brazil (1952), Venice (1954), where he won an award, and Sao Paulo (1956). In 1957, he received a scholarship from the United States government to study arts, and he was subsequently appointed as an Honorary Professor in Painting by Ohio State University in Columbus. In 1974, Affandi received an honorary doctorate from University of Singapore, the Peace Award from the Dag Hammarskjoeld Foundation in 1977, and the title of Grand Maestro in Florence, Italy. It is not easy to understand Affandi’s painting. For example when Affandi painted the horse, he painted it with his own understanding. Realism was never Affandi’s objective but instead he captured the expression of the horse by pouring the paint directly from the tube to the canvas. His wild lines and colors was painted with deep emotion and expressed spontaneously. In this painting, Horse, we can see how Affandi visualized the object. He did not just move the object away, rather its underlying beauty lies precisely in the emotions and expressions that he felt when looking at the horse directly. Scratches of lines and colors were not only intended to beautify its appearance, but also an attempt to create an atmosphere that he wanted to convey.

Hendra Gunawan Hendra Gunawan painted some of his surreal, lively, and emotional work during his imprisonment at Kebun Waru in Bandung from 1965 to 1978. His works captured the life of common people while also conveying a unique, expressionistic, and deeply personal vision of the reality he experienced. His paintings become highly original, modern, simple, and totally Indonesian with its expressions by observing Java’s grand landscapes and natural history. Hendra’s work may thus be seen as illustration of a new mythology. The stylized figures, landscapes features and the decorative approach to color are perhaps influenced by Javanese illustration and design. The underwater world is likely one of the most astonishing and fascinating of Hendra’s works in realistic painting. The subject seems apparently to be a conflict with the artist’s style, themes, and artistic concerns. This painting, Ikan Laut, was painted in 1973, and reflects one of Hendra’s favorite subjects of rich seas. Hendra has clearly created a scheme of expressionistic colors based on the actual hues of the ocean. The link between his distinctive palette and aquatic colors become even more apparent. He used brilliant colors for the ocean textures and character of the fishes.

Affandi Affandi was taught at the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts in Yogyakarta in early 1955. He received a scholarship from the U. S. government to study arts education in 1957, after participating in International exhibitions in Brazil and Italy. He was made an Honorary Professor of Painting by Ohio State University, and in 1974 was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Singapore. He also received the Peace Award from the Dag Hammarskjoeld Foundation in 1977, and the title of Grand Maestro in Florence, Italy. Affandi was passionate about his country and a large proportion of his works concern his feelings about the land and its people. Though Affandi only painted what he observed and never approached his works from any kind of philosophical or analytical starting point, he was particularly fond of Bali and Javanese culture. The cockfighting is one of the many recurring themes of the artist and yet the unique personality of the sitter never fails to captive the viewers. Very often, despite the artist’s apparent focus on the main subject which is the fight of the animals, Affandi is very fond of creating a sense of spontaneity by adding idiosyncratic details such as the feet of the onlooker, or the drinking spectator at the scene. By doing this, he creates a sense of immediacy equivalent to that of a snapshot and yet capturing the last emotion and personality for eternity. A sense of festivity is also conveyed, as the joyous crowd is clearly drinking to the occasion whilst the fighting animal are entangled in a fury of violence that is conveyed, as the joyous crown is clearly drinking to the occasions whilst the fighting animal area entangled in a fury of violent that is conjured by repeat, swirling stokes in many colors 095

Alit Sembodo Alit’s paintings have shown the tendency to become a media for social commentary. He does not purely make social criticism of the wisdom or practices of the ruling politics. He only goes as far as demonstrating the problems of society through the language of his paintings, according to his own perceptive and perception. Indonesian Spectacular is one such commentary, regarding the people of Indonesia after the reformation period which was tumultuous and abusive, breaking down the order of the society, bordering upon anarchism, desperate poverty, worsening violence, and so on. With his combination of strong drawing techniques and the simple colors in the background, the paintings of Alit Sembodo project an image of a dramatic atmosphere of his times. Srihadi Soedarsono Born in Solo, December 4, 1931. In 1958 he studied fine arts at the Institute of Technology Bandung and the Ohio State University, United States (1960 – 1962). His works has been exhibited in Indonesia, the United States, Australia and Brazil. He received cultural awards from both the Indonesian government (1971) and Australian (1973). In 1978 and 1987, he received the highest award in the Biennial Exhibition in Jakarta. Srihadi is currently a senior lecturer in painting and drawing at the Jakarta Institute of Arts and the Bandung Institute of Technology. The dance is one of Srihadi’s favorite themes. In his paintings of dancers he continues to paint female dancers in the same upright pose that has used in the past. His dance work consist of series of dancers, even so, for Srihadi, each dance has its own particular mood, the gist of which he attempts to capture in his painting. At the same time, dance also offers a panorama of human life in general: it shows the dynamic union between the everyday world of material reality and the world beyond perception, the realm of the material. The merging of spiritual and physical control obtained in dance obviously appeals to the philosophical Srihadi. Some of his figurative paintings, especially the dancers, look deceptively similar, and that the figures have become stereotypes, but one should try to appreciate and study the details and minimal variations. Srihadi pays particular attention to the characteristic of the dancer and the artistic form of the dance. Every dance has its language or vocabulary of movement and type of costume, all of which imbued with philosophical meaning. Srihadi gives us many variants in this new approach to the depiction of the dance. When he first started to focus on the idea of movement, he did so by paying with the parallelism of gestures and by emphasizing the realistic aspect of the dancer’s bodies. Color was then relatively secondary. By the early 1990’s rhythm had taken a life of its own, as shown by the vibrant dynamism of the dancer. In painting the present lot, the dancers’ eyes remain transfixed even as their body movements are transformed into a feast of glittering color. Even so, and however much the costumes of the dancers drift rhythmically over the canvas surface, it is in fact the artist’s working of this background that embodies the idea of movement.

M. Irfan M. Irfan was born in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra 1972. M. Irfan is included in 51 members of the young artists from West Sumatra that recently held a group exhibition under the theme of Panorama. He is widely known as prospective painters in Indonesian art world. He was one of the member or Jendela Group, a group of painters from Minang, West Sumatra. Basically Irfan is an artist that does not like to involve himself in great or political issues. He feels that they are simply beyond his capacity and interests. For him perceiving petty objects around him is more interesting. Irfan’s paintings of train series have captivated the people’s interest. They portray trains, railways, and fumes which give a sense of darkness. His “trains” series was quite a leap in Irfan’s painting career. They contained Irfan’s dreams, hopes and ideas. His works are being pursued by collectors and are often appearing in auction houses. His paintings are mostly huge in size. They portray not only trains, railways, ships, and also aeroplanes. The present lot perhaps Irfan’s personal observation towards his surroundings. His detail can be visually build into symbols though do not explained anything.

Lee Man Fong Lee Man Fong was born in Canton, China, 1913. He arrived at Singapore at young age then later moved to Jakarta. He showed great artistic talent from a young age. He participated in the Association’s First Art Exhibition invited by the head of the Dutch East Indies Associations (1931). Lee Man Fong was a successful commercial artist before becoming a full time artist in 1941. His successful exhibitions in Bandung and Jakarta made him a fast growing artist at that time. He received scholarship from the Dutch government to study painting in Holland (1946). In 1952 he returned to Indonesia and gained more accolades as well as acknowledgement. Lee Man Fong officially became the presidential palace’s painter and chief curators of its collection in 1961 and compiled a 5 volume edition of President Sukarno’s art collection. He died in 1988 and remembered as a western vigorous painter and an oriental unique oil painting painter. During 1952, Lee quietly developed his art, which focused on thorough observation of life and nature around him. Lee tried to translate the aesthetic and style of Chinese brush painting into oil on canvas. Considering the differences in texture and consistency between ink and oil, Lee tried to direct the effect of an ink brush with his strokes, which is not a simple act. A large part of these works featured animals, such as the chicken, doves, goldfish, storks, and gibbons. Doves has become Lee Man Fong’s beloved and sought after works in spite of Goldfishes and other animals such as horses, cockatoos, tigers and dogs. Lee Man Fong’s paintings of Doves are especially noteworthy. Since some forty years ago, his animal themes had made a far reaching accomplishment and recently have been eagerly sought after in Europe and America. A testimony to his mastery of technique and realization of theme, this painting depicts the world of the doves as peaceful and calm, but at the same time dynamic. The doves in pairs symbolize a good match, which may be further extended to mean “peaceful coexistence.” 121

Roedyat always paint his subject from his personal exploration and examination. Even when using subjects that he often painted, he always felt that he had to see and inspect them each time. The artist was strong in completely analyzing the objects before him. The objects are no longer as physical representations or repetitive illustrations. Instead they become metaphors of the self. The representation of woman figure in the foreground, which somewhat expressionless face, perhaps only treated as a metaphor to describe the landscape of city scene in the background. The presentation of trees is more stylized and abstracted to the point of being decorative. The combination of the unusual green and blue color is quite actually typical of the artist’s painting.

During 1933, he held his first exhibition in Bandung. He brought his painting to RMP. Sosrokartono, RA. Kartini’s brother, who was very impressed on Basoeki’s painting. Sosrokartono and Prince of Mangkunegoro VII became the person who greatly supported his painting career until Basoeki become a famous painter. During that time he continued his study at Academia van Beeldende Kunsten in the Hague, the Netherlands. Basoeki Abdullah is one of the most prominent Indonesian maestros in portrait paintings.

Widayat Born in Kutoarjo, Central Java, 1923. He studied at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta and Ceramics and Landscape, Nagoya, Japan (1960). He received BKPM award (1953), a cultural award from the Indonesian Government (1972), the Best Biennial Painting, Yogyakarta (1986) and the ASEAN Award, Brunei Darussalam (1993). His works have been shown throughout Indonesia and abroad. He performed his solo exhibitions in Yogyakarta (1983), Jakarta (1985, 1990, 1991, 1992, 2000 and participated in joint exhibition in Japan, Netherlands and United States for KIAS (1990 – 1991). The themes of Widayat’s works during half a century have not shifted much. They are centered on landscapes, flora and fauna, actual daily life, myths legends, and religious – spiritual issues. The same remark goes for his treatment of main object and decorative backgrounds with textures that has already become part of his characteristic features. One of the themes extensively treated by Widayat is flora and fauna. After his trip to Japan, the artist created many cherry blossom trees and animal objects like birds, horses and fishes. Fish seem to be the obsession for Widayat, who explained that his fascination for the creatures started in Japan. He went to deep-sea fishing with friends. The fish had all sort of strange, monstrous forms that appealed to Widayat’s fantasy. The fish is a symbol of good health, just like a proverb says “I feel as healthy as a fish in water.” Another reason for Widayat’s attraction to underwater world might be because he was born under the astrological sign of Pisces, the Fish. People with this sign must have the freedom to swim in all directions, living in the depths of the intuitive world of water.

Abdul Aziz Abdul Aziz was born in Purwokerto, Central Java, and showed precocious artistic talent from childhood. His first Diploma was in Social Sciences from Gajah Mada University, after which he studied Art at the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) in Yogyakarta. Due to his exceptional talent he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Academia di Belle Arti in Rome in 1958, where he was awarded two Diplomas, in Painting and in Decoration. On his return to Indonesia in 1965 he lectured in Fine Art at Udayana University and established his studio in Ubud Bali. Abdul Aziz is now regarded as one of Indonesia’s greatest artists of the 20th Century. Originally from Central Java but a resident of Bali for the last part of his life, Aziz was widely known and highly sought after for his realistic paintings of village scenes. Aziz’s paintings include beautiful women, depicted singly or in groups, and portraits both painted and sculpted. Yet his oeuvre stands out as more of an individual contribution to Indonesian art history than most, belonging in a class with artists who are continuously referred to as the ‘greats’: those individual artists that Western-trained or influenced art writers found to be the most original and innovative of their time.

Sudjana Kerton Sudjana Kerton was born in Bandung, 1922. He made documentary paintings in sketches and sculptures depicting the struggle of independence, exhibited in Sono Budoyo Museum, Yogyakarta and other cities throughout Java. Kerton’s work shows a deep concern for the common people in Indonesia particularly the farmers. The subject matter of Kerton’s work reflects an interesting issue. There are the figure, landscape scene, daily life, culture, art and performance and war/ battle. Kerton always remembered his experience of growing up in his neighborhood, interacting with people close to him, and also the lessons and customs. A number of Kerton’s works originated from his thoughts about and total involvement with traditional culture, arts and especially traditional performances. Some of them described customs and traditions; for instance, traditional wedding ceremony, cock fight, drunken man, and celebration of local tradition. Sudjana Kerton received full scholarship to study fine art at the Art Students League New York then Mexico for mural after won another fellowship to study art in Amsterdam and Paris. During his study in New York, Affandi who visited US stayed at his dorm and they discussed every subject matters about art, independence struggle and the life of ordinary peasant and farmer within West Java as Affandi born in Cirebon. Kerton then created his own cubism images in romantic color pallet depicting people’s activities through the places he personally observed.

Djoko Pekik Djoko Pekik was born 1938in Grobogan, Purwodadi in Central Java.In 1958, he enrolled at the Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia (ASRI) and studied under artists Suromo, Abas Alibasjah, and Widayat. Joko Pekik’s art is typically Javanese in style and he has become one of the country1 s foremost greatest artists in satirizing the society he lives in. From 1990 to 1991, his works were part of a travelling exhibition of contemporary works for the Festival of Indonesia in USA. Since then, he had held numerous solo and group exhibitions in various parts of Indonesia and overseas. “The Art Gallery of Djoko Pekik” is owned by the artist and showcases many of his own collection. Djoko Pekik’s work is unique in the painting world of Indonesia in the 1980s, both in regards to subject matter as well as to style. Djoko Pekik paints what moves him, he says, and what moves him is the plight of those millions of Indonesians who are living under difficult circumstances, in regions infertile from century-old deforestation, erosion and overpopulation, where work other than farming is scarce and the livelihood the land can offer more than meager. People and landscapes are Djoko Pekik’s major themes— depicted in bleak tones dominated by moss-green, black, ocher and cream, enlivened here and there by a deep red or blue. Djoko Pekik’s paintings are strong and simple: Simple figures in strong outlines set in simple, strong compositions. His colors are low tone and earthy; and like the repeated stripes in the cloth, his figures occur mostly in groups, in a choreographed repetition of rhythmic movement. The individual is not the focus of Djoko Pekik’s work like shown in the present lot.
