BIDDING The Auctioneer accepts bids from those present in the saleroom, from telephone bidders, or by absentee written bids left with Masterpiece in advance of the auction. Bidding will be done in Ringgit (MYR). The auctioneer will not specifically identify bids placed on behalf of the consignor.

Buyers are advised to inspect the property themselves. Masterpiece is not liable for any error or omission in this catalogue. All descriptions of dimensions are approximate only.

BIDDING INCREMENTS The auctioneer will normally start with bids below the low estimate and may at his own discretion increase bids. The standard increments are:-

INFORMATION FOR BUYERS

TELEPHONE BIDS Prospective buyers may bid by telephone during the course of the auction. Arrangements for this service must be confirmed with the Bid Department at least 2 hours prior to the auction. Telephone bids may be recorded. By bidding on the telephone, prospective buyers consent to the recording their conversation. Masterpiece will not be responsible for errors of failures to execute bids. SUCCESSFULL BIDS The fall of the auctioneer’s hammer indicates the final bid, at which time, the buyer assumes full responsibility for the lot. CONDITIONS OF SALE FOR BUYERS

Together with the terms as set out in “INFORMATION FOR BUYERS”, These Conditions contain all terms in which a buyer contracts with a seller in respect of the sale of a Lot. These terms may be amended at any time by way of notices or oral announcements during the sale and auction. The buyer agrees to be bound by these Conditions when he/she bids to purchase a Lot. 1. Meanings In these terms and conditions, the following words and expressions have the following meanings:

CONDITIONS OF SALE Masterpiece CONDITIONS OF SALE FOR BUYERS governs the terms and conditions of contract between the buyer and the seller of a lot and is set out later in this catalogue. Persons who have been registered as bidders will be deemed to have read and be fully aware of and subject to the terms as stated in the CONDITIONS OF SALE FOR BUYERS.. No reliance should be placed on oral representations made by any person at the auction.

“Buyer” means the successful bidding buyer of a Lot;

ESTIMATES Estimates are based upon prices recently paid at auction for comparable property, condition, rarity, quality and provenance. Estimates are subject to revision. Buyers should not rely upon estimates as prediction of actual selling prices. Estimates do not include the buyer’s premium. For estimate on request, please contact us for further information.

“Hammer Price” means the price at which a Lot is sold to Buyer;

RESERVES The reserve is the confidential minimum price the consignor will accept. The reserve will not normally exceed the low estimate.

“Reserve Price” means in respect of a Lot, the minimum price which the Seller is prepared to accept from a buyer;

BUYERS PREMIUM Masterpiece charges a premium to the buyer on the final bid price of each lot sold at 12% (twelve percent). VIEWING/ADMISSION Pre-auction viewings are open to the public and free of charge. Buyers are strongly advised to examine the lots thoroughly, Condition reports are available. Masterpiece reserves the right to refuse admission and participation in its auctions. REGISTRATION Prospective buyers need to register for a numbered bidding paddle. Details of bank accounts are required for credit reference purposes.

ABSENTEE BIDS Absentee bids are written instructions from prospective buyers directing Masterpiece to bid on their behalf up to a maximum amount specified for each lot. Masterpiece staff will attempt to execute an absentee bid at the lowest possible price taking into account the reserve price. If identical bids are received from two or more parties, the first bid received by Masterpiece will take priority. The auctioneer may execute absentee bids directly from the rostrum. Absentee Bids Forms are available in this catalogue. Absentee bids submitted on “no-reserve” lots will, in the absence of a higher bid, be executed at the amount of the bid.

“Catalogue” means the Catalogue prepared by Masterpiece which describes and illustrates all Lots for sale by Masterpiece; “Conditions” means these terms and conditions;

“Lot” means each piece of property as described in the Catalogue for which bids are invited for purchase; “Masterpiece”, “our”, “we”, “us” means Masterpiece Auction sdn. bhd;

“Seller”, means in respect of a particular Lot, the seller of that Lot and his personal representatives; “MYR” means the lawful currency of Malaysia. Except where the context otherwise requires, words importing the singular shall include the plural and vice versa, words importing any one gender shall include all genders, and words importing persons shall include companies and corporations and vice versa. Unless otherwise stated, references to Clauses are references to Clauses in these Conditions. The headings appearing in this Agreement are inserted for ease of reference only and shall in no way define, limit or construe the terms and conditions appearing herein. 2. Parties to the sale of a Lot Unless otherwise stated, a Buyer contracts with a Seller to purchase a Lot. Masterpiece acts as the Seller’s agent in respect of the sale of a Lot.

Bidding Registering. Prospective buyers are required to register for a numbered bidding paddle. Copies of bank accounts may be required to be shown to Masterpiece for credit references and/or payment purposes. Reserve. Unless otherwise stated, all Lots are offered for sale, subject to a Reserve Price which is confidential between the Seller and Masterpiece. Bids may be placed by representatives of Masterpiece on behalf of the Seller up to the Reserve Price. There is no obligation on Masterpiece to identify bids placed on behalf of a Seller. Types of bids. Bids may be accepted from those present at the auction and from telephone bidders, or by absentee written bids left with Masterpiece prior to the auction. By bidding by telephone, all prospective buyers consent to the recording of all conversation and bids. Currency. Prices of all Lots are in Ringgit Malaysia and all bids shall be made in Ringgit Malaysia. Final bid. The fall of the auctioneer’s hammer indicates acceptance of the final bid, at which time the Buyer enters into a full valid and binding contract with the Seller to purchase the Lot. The results of absentee bids will be notified to the prospective buyer after the auction. Risk and responsibility of the Lot (but not title) pass to the Buyer seven calendar days from the date of the sale or earlier if full payment is made and delivery made to the Buyer. Buyer’s responsibility. When bidding, a prospective buyer accepts personal responsibility to pay the Hammer Price of the Lot for which he bids if he is successful, together with the premium price of 12% (twelve percent) of the hammer price. Limited warranty No warranty. Neither the Seller nor Masterpiece makes any warranty in respect of the description of any Lot, its value or its quality. Save for the limited warranty set out in this Clause 4(b) below, the Buyer purchases a Lot “as is” without any representation or warranty of any kind by Masterpiece or the Seller. The contents of the Catalogue are statements of opinion only and do not constitute any representation or warranty whatsoever in respect of any Lot. Limited warranty. The Seller and Masterpiece only warrant that the Lot is related to the artist named in its description in the Catalogue. In the event of any allegation of lack of authenticity or forgery, the Buyer is required to notify Masterpiece in writing within a period of 30 days (the “Notice”) from the date of auction. Contents of Notice. The Notice shall include written evidence from a reputable independent expert who is able to show that the Lot is a forgery. Masterpiece or the Seller reserves the right to request for further evidential proof from other experts if in their respective opinions either of them is not satisfied with the finding of the Buyer’s expert. Refund. In the event that Masterpiece is satisfied with the evidence as enclosed in the Notice and subject to (i) receipt of the full refund from the Seller and (ii) the return of the Lot in such condition as it was sold, a refund of the purchase price for that Lot will be made to the Buyer. The liability of Masterpiece and the Seller is limited to the purchase price of such Lot. Neither Masterpiece nor the Seller shall be liable for any other damages, costs and expenses that may be incurred in presenting the Notice. Conflict of opinion. In the event of conflict of opinion between the Buyer’s expert and the expert appointed by Masterpiece or the Seller, or if it can be shown that tests of authenticity would involve scientific process which could damage or otherwise jeopardize the condition of the Lot and which scientific process did not exist at the time of the publication of the Catalogue, no refund will be made of the affected Lot. No assignment of Limited Warranty. The Limited Warranty in this Clause 4 is for the benefit of the Buyer only and cannot be assigned to any third party.

Non-payment Where a Buyer fails to make payment with cleared funds within the stipulated time, Masterpiece and/or the Seller shall be entitled, in addition to all other rights and remedies available under the law, to :(a) charge default interest at the rate of 1.5% per month on the outstanding sums due from the Buyer; (b) to commence legal proceedings against the Buyer for recovery of all outstanding sums, including interest, legal fees, costs and other expenses on a full indemnity basis; (c) rescind the sale of the Lot; (d) to resell the property on such terms as they deem fit and to set-off the proceeds of sale against the outstanding sums unpaid by the Buyer; (e) to hold the Lot as security; pledge or lien pending payment of all outstanding sums due from the Buyer. 7. Copyright The copyright in all images, illustrations and literature, including the Catalogue is the property of Masterpiece and shall not be used by the Buyer without the prior written consent of Masterpiece. No warranty is made by Masterpiece and the Seller that the Buyer of a Lot shall acquire any intellectual property rights in it or to reproduce it. 8. Miscellaneous (a) Notwithstanding anything stated in these Conditions, the Buyer shall indemnify Masterpiece and the Seller on a full indemnity basis, in respect of any loss, damage, cost or expense that may be incurred by either the Seller or Masterpiece in respect of any breach by the Buyer of these Conditions. (b) If any part of this agreement is found by any courts to be invalid, illegal or unenforceable, that part may be discounted and the rest of the agreement shall continue to be valid and enforceable to the fullest extent permitted by law. (c) Masterpiece will hold Buyer’s personal data and may communicate it to affiliated companies worldwide for the purposes of enabling the Buyer to consign or purchase property or services and, unless the Buyer objects, advising of forthcoming sales, events and service. (d) These Conditions are subject to Indonesia law, which shall apply to its construction as well as to its effect. (e) Where a translation of this agreement has been provided, the English language version shall prevail in case of conflict.

GST

(a)

The standard rate of 6% GST will be charged on hammer price ONLY for Lots marked with * and will be borne by the buyer

(b)

For commissions and related charges concerning the purchase of a lot, 6% GST will be charge where applicable. Ie commissions, insurance, transportation.

Payment, Title and Collection of purchases Deadline for payment. All payments for sold Lots must be made within seven calendar days from the date of sale. (b) Title. No title in the Lot will pass to the Buyer until all amounts due to Masterpiece as stated in Clause 3(f) above have been paid, even in circumstances where Masterpiece has released the Lot to the Buyer before full payment has been made. (c) Payment modes. Payments must be in Ringgit Malaysia and may be made in telegraphic transfer to Masterpiece’s bank account. Please include the Buyer’s name and invoice number in the bank instructions. (a)

Collection. The Buyer is required to collect his purchase from the premises of Masterpiece and pay for all delivery and shipping costs. Masterpiece may assist the Buyer in making packing and shipping arrangements at the Buyer’s own costs and risk. Storage charges. All purchases will initially be held for collection at the premises of Masterpiece at no charge for a period of fourteen days from the date of sale. Subsequently Masterpiece will charge the Buyer storage charges, together with all other transport, handling, removal, insurance and other expenses where a Lot is transported to another location pending collection. Limit on insurance cover. Masterpiece provides general insurance cover for sold Lots for a period of up to seven days from the date of sale of such Lots. Subsequently, risk of such Lots will transfer to the respective Buyers.

Abdul Ghani Ahmad is a self-taught artist who has risen from a street artist to wide local and international recognition, defines his paintings as a documentation of the local heritage. He believes that painting is among the best ways to preserve our traditions and heritage for future generations. He started being active in watercolours in around 1986 and rural scenes and nature have remained the main theme in his watercolours. He feels that although photography produces accurate and honest images, it cannot compare to watercolours in providing the audience with a sense of satisfaction. The beauty of his watercolours transcends time and easy to appreciate, contributing to Abdul Ghani’s success and supporting the preservation of Malay heritage, tradition and culture. Not content with only documenting the heritage and art of tradition, Abdul Ghani also strives to carry on the tradition of the art of watercolours itself.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art and Diploma in Art Education, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Shah Alam. He has held several solo exhibitions and joint international exhibitions in Korea, Britain and other countries. His art theme is expressed with life and interiors from his polished techniques and s kills in palette knifes, scrappers and brushes. His paintings are mostly done with expression of intense happiness and appreciation of aesthetics. The artist had won several awards for his artworks. His works had been widely collected by the corporate and private sectors. 8

Tan Thean Song is a batik artist that received formal art training in Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore (NAFA). Besides batik painting, he uses watercolour and Chinese ink. Tan is a recipient of numerous awards including the first prize in the Malaysian Young Artists Art Competition in 1964 and a second prize in Salon Malaysia Art Competition. He has held solo exhibition in Adelaide Expo and Penang, as well as being involved in several group exhibitions in Malaysia and Singapore.

He was the protĂŠgĂŠ for late artist Ismail Mat Hussin where he learned batik from.sukri batik paintings often depict everyday market life, with emphasis on the sarong worn by the women. He was one of the artists chosen at the First Art Expo Kelantan, 2014. He has exhibited in City Art Gallery, Kuala lumpur in group exhibition lambaian Kelantan in 2015 and Dita Colour Gallery, Kuala lumpur in Gelora Timur Exhibition in 2016.

JUHARI MOHD SAID (b. In his early work, the artist has worked predominantly with woodblock prints on paper or canvas. However, in 2007, after nearly 25 years of creating prints using the same methods, he began to struggle with this process. Realising that there was only so much he could do with prints, Juhari Said then decided to take printmaking to the next level, through incorporating the use of the blocks of wood as his artworks. Blocks that had previously been used to create the woodcuts. Over the years, he has been involved in numerous exhibitions and art fairs both locally and internationally in Austria, China, France, Indonesia, Japan, London, Macau, Pakistan, Philippines, Taiwan, Tunisia, Vietnam and more. Juhari has also been involved in various local and international residencies such as the ‘Bare Hands Residency’ in Jordan, Indonesia and Japan.

In 1995, he was named the Most Promising Young Artist by the Nanyang Gallery of Art, Kuala Lumpur. He has held three solo exhibitions.Th e first, entitled Gerek (2003), and the second, entitled Gelagat (2009),were held at Metro Fine Art, Kuala Lumpur, while his third, Pohon Camara, was held at ARTI Fine Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, in 2011. In 2017, Rohaizad participated in three group exhibitions: Amal Insani: A Charity Exhibition, National Visual Arts Gallery, Kuala Lumpur; Lakar Sapa: Kembara Seni Hanoi-Sapa, Galeri Shah Alam, Selangor; and Bintang 5:Volume 1, Segaris Art Center, Publika, Kuala Lumpur. His works are in the collections of such institutions as Hong Leong Bank Bhd, the Malaysian Timber Council, the National Visual Arts Gallery and Galeri Shah Alam, as well as individuals.

Lee Thanh Son is a Vietnamese artist respected for his distinct impressionistic style. Lee graduated from Hanoi’s College of Drama and Cinematography in 1986. Depicting the life in Hanoi and its surrounding villages, Lee was awarded the first prize at the Competiton for Hanoi Young Artists, Hanoi Fine Art Association in 1990 and first prize for Hanoi Young Artists Exhibition in 1998. Lee‘s work is widely exhibited throughout Asia, Europe, Australia and North America. He has received numerous honors and awards and his paintings are held in public and private collections worldwide, including that of former US President Bill Clinton and Bill Gates.

Nik Rafin is an American-trained artist. Born in 1974 in Petaling Jaya, he studied Advanced Photography in the USA, before pursuing a Minor in Fine Arts from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. He attained a Bachelor of Arts in Advertising and Mass Communication from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the USA in 1997. Rafin’s canvases often portray the swift energies of constant movement. He combines both his passion for photography and art to produce the distinctive style that contributes to the vibrancy in his paintings. SHAPAREL HJ SALLEH (b. Shaparel is now known as an Abstract Expressionist. His switch, which was startling to many including his ardent admirer, displays not only Shaparel’s growth as an artist, but also his versatility. Shaparel held his first solo exhibition, Pusaka Rimba at Tuanku Fausiah Museum and Gallery, USM in 2007 and has gone on to hold a few solo exhibitions including, Natural Enviroment (2011), Beauty for Survival (2012), and Imbas Umbi (2014). In all, Shaparel has participated in over 20 group and solo exhibitions and his hard work have often been rewarded, the pinnacle being the Main Prize in the Young Talent Festival competition, Penang in 1999. Known for its pleasing appeal and rawness in emotions, Shaparel has enjoyed much success with collectors as well. His paintings can be viewed in Bank Negara Malaysia, Balai Seni Lukis Sabah, Muzium dan Galeri Tuanku Fauziah, and Soka Gakkai Malaysia.

Tang Hong Lee uses anchovies as metaphor, especially for those who are not familiar with Malaysia and its colourful culture. These aphues symbolize the concept of unity amongst Malaysia’s ethnic backgrounds as it is one of the main ingredients used to make ‘nasi lemak’, a much loved local delicacy consumed mainly for breakfast, but has long since been part of this nation’s staple diet. He stresses on the fact that Malaysia is a peace loving country devoid of hostility of which seems to plague others.

He pursued his Doctoral studies in Islamic Studies at Temple University, United States of America in 1986. His curatorial and writing endeavours include An Islamic Identity in Contemporary Malaysian Art: Achievements and Challenges (National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, 1992) and Art and Spirituality: An Introduction (National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, 1997) to name a few. His first solo exhibition titled ""Ke Arah Tawhid"" held in 1984. Sulaiman Esa has had several gallery and museum exhibitions, including at the Para Site. This series speaks about the life of a farmer, which is vulnerable to and dependent on the whims of the weather. A great master, Datuk Ibrahim Hussein received his formal art training at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore in 1956 and moved to London in 1959 where he studied at the Byam Shaw School of art, where he was the top student for 3 consecutive years. Ibrahim’s medium was one he coined himself “printage” – a combination of both printing and collage.Though he has held exhibitions internationally in cities such as London, NewYork, and Copenhagen, Ibrahim’s big break came when his works were exhibited alongside Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali at the Daif Abdullah Al Salam Gallery in Kuwait (1977). He was honoured with a Retrospective by the National Art Gallery in 1986. After returning to Malaysia, Ibrahim became a resident artist at the University of Malaya and in 1991, he founded the Ibrahim Hussein Museum and Cultural Foundation in Langkawi. “Nudes in China Blue VIII II ( Blue Period), 1982” is another masterpiece by Datuk Ibrahim Hussein. This painting is painted predominantly in blue with two figures, which is the signature of Blue Period. The Blue Period is a term used to define the works produced when he painted essentially monochromatic paintings in shades of blue and blue-green, only occasionally warmed by other colors. (as referred to Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso) This period’s starting point is uncertain; which was predicted to have this painting produced when he sank into a severe depression and blue tones began to dominate his paintings. Malay Artifacts Arts and crafts always associate in life in the past. People produce tools or some wares to help make life easier, and adorn it with fine and intricate arts. That adornment gave characters to the tool and distinguishes Malay artifacts from others. It tells a lot of story from the usage, the owner and also the place it came from. For the Malay people, the expression on their art and crafts are always associated with their principle in life, largely influenced by the Islamic teaching and Malay custom. This sort of expression can be recognized by the use of floral and vegetal motif, sometimes associated with calligraphy in jawi script and very often with stylized animal or representation of animistic creatures. Generally, the fortunate and wealthy people might be able to afford pricey metal like silver and gold, where normal pheasant may just afford brass and some just use abundantly available natural sources like wood and bamboos. Regardless the material used, their artisan showcases remarkably very fine and intricate ornamentation. A keris for example, was forged in blazing fire, combining few good metal to produce a fine functional blade. But the sheath and hilt of the keris is the first thing people see to note the owner. Some keris would use wooden hilt, a buffalo horn, an ivory, a black coral or even a whale’s teeth.The rarest material used or the most embellished one is an expression of the owner’s wealth and power. Embarking towards the 20th Century, traditional arts and crafts are slowly forgotten, and efforts by many show significant results. In the turn of 20th Century, silvercrafts in the state of Kelantan rose again, with some was able to debut internationally by producing European-styled wares with hint of local art taste, like the rose bowl, ashtray, tablewares and candelabras. Traditionally, these wares are estranged to the local, but were specially crafted for British officers and expatriates so they can bring something back home as souvenirs. Interestingly, the local artisan uses traditional inspired motifs like the daun tapak leman (Elephantophus scraber leaves), bunga kenanga (Cananga odorata flowers) and bunga cengkih (clove) to embellish the wares they produce. The craft produced during that era is marked with Kelantan in jawi script. Kamchengs are one of the most recognisable examples of Peranakan Chinese porcelain because they were found in almost every Peranakan Chinese household. Kamcheng is a representative of the culture .Peranakan Chinese porcelain were commissioned and manufactured in China and exported for use by the Peranakan Chinese in the British Straits Settlements. These porcelain were typically owned by the wealthy families and they used them during auspicious occasions like weddings and birthdays. The Chinese may call it a ginger jug but Baba Nyonyas named it as kamcheng. It is used for fermenting all sorts of things and also used as a punch bowl during Chinese New Year. This kamcheng which is large was usually used to store or serve food. The knob on the cover takes the form of a lion-dog, and the interior is decorated with parakeet among flowers. 盖盅”Kamcheng”用闽南话发音是“感情”的谐音。峇峇娘惹结婚时有一个习俗,新 郎会準备「盖盅」盛红白汤圆,并与新娘一起吃下,表示彼此接受了这段婚姻。以“ 盖盅甜蜜蜜”之意,盖中内盛入大小汤圆黏在一起的概念,寓意人“和”人相处和谐 融洽的情感。娘惹瓷经典色彩,缅怀峇峇娘惹文化的浪漫情怀,透过嫣红的牡丹、五 彩的凤凰及盘旋缠绕在碧绿艳粉的底子上无疑展露着“娘惹瓷”的美感。 Masterpiece Fine Art Auction - Malaysia 99
