Pahang, 1963) Ikan Bilis Symphony II, 1999 Oil on board: 61 x 61 cm Signed, lower right: Thong Lee 99 MYR 4,500 - 6,000 USD 1,170 - 1,560 Tang Hong Lee is an artist who continually reinvents and develops his style to match his own journey and explorations. He received his Diploma in Art from Kuala Lumpur College of Art in 1986. He then continued his studies and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts(visual art) in printmaking from Canberra Institute of Art. Tang Hong Lee uses anchovies as metaphor, especially for those who are not familiar with Malaysia and its colourful culture. These aphues symbolize the concept of unity amongst Malaysia’s ethnic backgrounds as it is one of the main ingredients used to make ‘nasi lemak’, a much loved local delicacy consumed mainly for breakfast, but has long since been part of this nation’s staple diet. He stresses on the fact that Malaysia is a peace loving country devoid of hostility of which seems to plague others.

Layers of blocks are imprinted, with each block contributing its unique characteristic, which gives depth and complexities to Raduan’s work. Khalil’s preference for the human figure has led to memorable images of men and women in the East Coast Malay fishing villages against stark backgrounds of blues and greens and watercolour landscape of villages. For artists such as Khalil Ibrahim, it becomes necessary not just to look - but to see. Sketching enables an artist to re-train his or her hand-eye coordination through placing physical marks on a surface and feeling the effect an instrument – pen, pencil, scribe etc. has when making its mark through the pressure of the artist’s recording hand.

AWANG DAMIT AHMAD (b. Sabah, 1956) Payarama Series, Belatak Biru, 2014 Mixed media on canvas: 91 x 91 cm Signed, dated and titled on the reverse MYR 30,000 - 40,000 USD 7,870 - 10,380
The unique abstract expressionistic brushwork visible in Payarama : Belatak Biru has placed Awang Damit Ahmad at the forefront of our Malaysia’s contemporary art scene today. The present lot is the series of the artist’s fourth stylistic phase known as “Payarama ”, which reflects upon the interconnection between nature and man. This series speaks about the life of a farmer, which is vulnerable to and dependent on the whims of the weather. This work expresses a profoundly spiritual quality that is deeply rooted in his oeuvre. The premeditated use of colours is suggestive of his sensitivity to the varying hues and their associated meanings. Viewing the painting from a distance shows an intuitive and intellectual division of space on the canvas, where the disparate elements suspend in an optimal stasis. Awang’s others series are “EOC”, “Marista”, “Iraga” and “Payarama Baru,”.According to Professor Dr. Muliyadi Mahamood, "Awang draws his inspiration from his childhood as the son of a fisherman, as well as from his environment full of green luxurious plants. Around him, he saw neighbours planting and working in their gardens; building houses and buildings; fixing roads full of potholes and mud. Awang tried to understand all the human activities around him, and he compared and contrasted them with his artistic activities.

IBRAHIM HUSSEIN, DATUK (b. Kedah, 1936 - d. Kuala Lumpur, 2009) Nudes in China Blue VIII II (Blue Period), 1982 Oil on board: 79 x 54 cm Signed, dated lower left Ibrahim Hussein, 1982, tittled on reverse Provenance: Prominent Penang Private Collector MYR 170,000 - 250,000 USD 44,020 - 64,740
A great master, Datuk Ibrahim Hussein received his formal art training at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore in 1956 and moved to London in 1959 where he studied at the Byam Shaw School of art, where he was the top student for 3 consecutive years. Ibrahim’s medium was one he coined himself “printage” – a combination of both printing and collage.Though he has held exhibitions internationally in cities such as London, NewYork, and Copenhagen, Ibrahim’s big break came when his works were exhibited alongside Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali at the Daif Abdullah Al Salam Gallery in Kuwait (1977). He was honoured with a Retrospective by the National Art Gallery in 1986. After returning to Malaysia, Ibrahim became a resident artist at the University of Malaya and in 1991, he founded the Ibrahim Hussein Museum and Cultural Foundation in Langkawi. “Nudes in China Blue VIII II ( Blue Period), 1982” is another masterpiece by Datuk Ibrahim Hussein. This painting is painted predominantly in blue with two figures, which is the signature of Blue Period. The Blue Period is a term used to define the works produced when he painted essentially monochromatic paintings in shades of blue and blue-green, only occasionally warmed by other colors. (as referred to Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso) This period’s starting point is uncertain; which was predicted to have this painting produced when he sank into a severe depression and blue tones began to dominate his paintings. Other frequent subjects include female, mothers with children and more. Themes of poverty and despair pervade the works as well, which shows the struggles that he channeled into his work.Besides Picasso, other masters who had sought after the Blue Period are Leonardo da Vinci, Joan Miro, Yves Klein and Katsushika Hokusai, who used blue colour as a mean of expression. Malay Artifacts Arts and crafts always associate in life in the past. People produce tools or some wares to help make life easier, and adorn it with fine and intricate arts. That adornment gave characters to the tool and distinguishes Malay artifacts from others. It tells a lot of story from the usage, the owner and also the place it came from. For the Malay people, the expression on their art and crafts are always associated with their principle in life, largely influenced by the Islamic teaching and Malay custom. This sort of expression can be recognized by the use of floral and vegetal motif, sometimes associated with calligraphy in jawi script and very often with stylized animal or representation of animistic creatures. Generally, the fortunate and wealthy people might be able to afford pricey metal like silver and gold, where normal pheasant may just afford brass and some just use abundantly available natural sources like wood and bamboos. Regardless the material used, their artisan showcases remarkably very fine and intricate ornamentation. A keris for example, was forged in blazing fire, combining few good metal to produce a fine functional blade. But the sheath and hilt of the keris is the first thing people see to note the owner. Some keris would use wooden hilt, a buffalo horn, an ivory, a black coral or even a whale’s teeth. The rarest material used or the most embellished one is an expression of the owner’s wealth and power. Embarking towards the 20th Century, traditional arts and crafts are slowly forgotten, and efforts by many show significant results. In the turn of 20th Century, silvercrafts in the state of Kelantan rose again, with some was able to debut internationally by producing European-styled wares with hint of local art taste, like the rose bowl, ashtray, tablewares and candelabras. Traditionally, these wares are estranged to the local, but were specially crafted for British officers and expatriates so they can bring something back home as souvenirs. Interestingly, the local artisan uses traditional inspired motifs like the daun tapak leman (Elephantophus scraber leaves), bunga kenanga (Cananga odorata flowers) and bunga cengkih (clove) to embellish the wares they produce. The craft produced during that era is marked with Kelantan in jawi script. This mark was once misunderstood by the silver collectors as mark from middle-east country, as the jawi script is using Arabic letters.

Kamchengs are one of the most recognisable examples of Peranakan Chinese porcelain because they were found in almost every Peranakan Chinese household. Kamcheng is a representative of the culture .Peranakan Chinese porcelain were commissioned and manufactured in China and exported for use by the Peranakan Chinese in the British Straits Settlements. These porcelain were typically owned by the wealthy families and they used them during auspicious occasions like weddings and birthdays. The Chinese may call it a ginger jug but Baba Nyonyas named it as kamcheng. It is used for fermenting all sorts of things and also used as a punch bowl during Chinese New Year. This kamcheng which is large was usually used to store or serve food. The knob on the cover takes the form of a lion-dog, and the interior is decorated with parakeet among flowers. Masterpiece Fine Art Auction - Malaysia 99
