003 DULLAH (b. Solo, 1919 – 1996) Lilies, 1966 Oil on canvas: 45 x 53 cm Signed and dated, lower right: Dullah, 1966 SGD 3,000 - 5,000 USD 2,110 - 3,520 Dullah studied painting under Affandi and Sudjojono but soon developed a distinctive style of naturalism on his own. He was well known for his landscape, portraits, and still life paintings which reflected his philosophy of consistently focusing surrounding the common people. One of the founders of HBS – Surakarta Cultural Community, he was selected to edit the book of former President Soekarno’s Private Collection of Indonesian Art (Volume I & II) and was appointed to care and curate for the state art collection. Dullah has never been overly concerned with the innate beauty of charisma of a subject, nor has he manipulated objects and people in such a way as to gain a certain flashy style or shallow substance of his works. In 1960’s Dullah developed a technique for the use of oil paints that was to become his trademark. This technique involved the integrated use of transparent oil washes that duplicated the characteristic of watercolor. The transparency of Dullah’s approach to oils allowed his skilled and graceful brush work to create nuances of color and tone as backgrounds for his subject.

Agung Mangu Putra Mangu Putra was born in Sangeh, Bali, on May 11, 1963. He graduated from the faculty of Art and Design at the Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI), Yogyakarta majoring Visual Communication Design (1990). His first exhibition was in Dewata Gallery (1987) at Taman Budaya Denpasar. Being a designer did not satisfy him as an artist then he decided to engage in full time painting in 1998. Since his first solo exhibition in Ubud (1990) his name was considered as valuable painter in Indonesia. He held his solo exhibition at National Gallery, “Teater Rakyat”, Jakarta, 2010; “Silent Word”, Gajah Gallery, Singapore (2008), Mandala, Bidadari, Ubud-Bali (2007), “Belief, Rupa Gallery”, Surabaya (2005),etc. He also joined in several group exhibitions in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bali and other country. He received awards as the Best in Design Arts (during the 4th and 6th anniversary of ISI, as the finalist of Philip Morris Award in 1994 and Indofood Art Award 2002, Second Place, Jakarta. In his recent series of paintings, Mangu Putra’s explores the themes of Balinese ritual in specific. He seems also interested in portraying the holy regions that derived from him self. For him, he was not deliberately changed his object. It was only the angle verse that changes a lot. Representations of natural phenomena, along with the inner pulse of life, form the main stream of Mangu Putra search. The natural world, such as mountains and coasts, are depicted as identifiable objects. Some of his works with abstract designs imply natural images, such as the character of water and the texture and colors of earth or stone. Nevertheless, there is a certain progressive critical vision in Mangu Putra’s way of viewing and interpreting the world. Here, Mangu’s concern are not ritual ceremonies but rather the traditional culture of worship for the land; the land that scared and fundamental to our existence.

Basoeki Abdullah born in Solo, January 27, 1915 is one of the most prominent Indonesian maestros in portrait paintings. The late artist was well-known for his realistic paintings. Besides painting of natural beauty and sensuous landscape, he is also noted for his portraits of beautiful women, as well as paintings of scenes from legends that are also tempered with the same lyrical and overly sensual treatment. His great fond of paintings women’s figure perhaps derived from his great interest in exploring the beauty of women that is attractive to paint in any way. The artist gain the public recognition after winning a painting competition held in conjunction with the Netherland’s Queen Juliana ascension to throne on 6 September 1948. There are painters who like to paint nudity. Nudity in art has generally reflected — with some exceptions — social standards of aesthetics and modesty/ morality of their time in painting, sculpture and more recently in photography. At all times in human history, the human body has been one of the principal subjects for artists. It has been represented on prehistoric paintings and statutes and in all eras since. The male nude was more common in antiquity, especially in ancient Greece, but today the tendency is for the female nude body to be more highly regarded and represented. Theo Meier Theo Meier was born Born in 1908. Theo had shown his talent in drawing since childhood. The financial situation of his father did not allow him to support an artist son. So Theo decided to be more independent. He was extremely pleased to be able to pursue his art studies when he received a scholarship from the Art Academy Basel. He began to pursue his artistic career and travel to France. He pays brief visits to several museums and galleries in Paris, finally arriving in the town of Pont Aven. Theo’s taste for adventure embarks on some paintings of beautiful scenery and city scene. “Garden in Banyuls” described as a typical French seaside town, a charming old fishing village with quaint narrow streets and an excellent beach. It was located in the south of France, once a sleepy fishing town that attracted artists like Matisse and Picasso because it was a cheap place to live. Lee Man Fong Lee Man Fong was one of a rare artist who received honor by critics and collectors across Asia. As an Oriental artist, Lee has renewed and transformed Western oil painting by imbuing it with the essence of Chinese ink painting, achieving a mutual identity between subject and object, at the same time vastly opening the restrictions on traditional Chinese painting. In short, he created a unique “Man-fong style”. Doves has become Lee Man Fong’s beloved and sought after works in spite of Goldfishes and other animals such as horses, cockatoos, tigers and dogs. Lee Man Fong’s painting of Doves is noteworthy. Since some forty years ago, his animal themes had made a far reaching accomplishment and recently eagerly sought after in Europe and America. A testimony to his mastery of technique and realization of theme, this painting depicts the world of the doves as peaceful and calm, but at the same time dynamic. The doves in pairs symbolize a good match, which may be further extended to mean “peaceful coexistence.” 037 LEE MAN FONG (Canton, China 1913 – Singapore 1988) Doves Oil on board: 78 x 34 cm Signed in Chinese Character SGD 80,000 - 100,000 USD 56,340 - 70,420

Ugo’s journey of painting continues until today. He does not care about forms, lines, composition, techniques, or any -ism within the fine art world. He paints using any medium with whatever techniques. He does not need themes, contents or messages when expressing his ideas. Whatever he paints he paint it with honest and becomes the medium that channels the feeling without hesitation. As an individual artist who is looking for meaning through imagery symbolism, Ugo’s scratchy paint shows his indeterminate sign and poetic upon his self consciousness. His rough scratches never recognized anything nor reach into form perfections and Ugo’s horizontal lines sometimes go beyond his conscious and offer not only form but also meaningful message.

He performed his solo exhibitions in H Block Gallery, QUT, Brisbane, Australia (1996), Cemeti Contemporary Art Gallery, Yogyakarta (1998), Gen Gallery & Public Center Koshigaya, Saitama, Japan (2000), and Nadi Gallery, Jakarta (2001, 2002). He joined several group exhibitions in Indonesia and overseas, Jakarta Art and Design Expo, Jakarta (1992), Art Gallery Conink, the Netherlands (1993), Cheju Pre-Biennale, South Korea (1995), Phillip Morris ASEAN Art Award, National Gallery, Bangkok, Thailand (1996), Tachikawa International Art Festival (1999), Museo de la Cuida de Mexico, Museum of Mexico (2000), Circle Point Gallery, Washington DC, USA (2002), etc. Agus Suwage is first and foremost a graphic designer who has had 10-years experience with commercial art before he ventured into his current profession as an artist. In mid 1995, he borrowed the artistic mode of the German Anselm Keifer and the British Francis Bacon. Later, he tried to develop his own style starting to study with his own body and face in various poses and expression in realistic rendering as his means to convey sociocultural issues in cynical, ironical and parody atmospheres. Suwage’s artistic explorations have as the basic photographic images that he develops with his sensitiveness and manual skills in drawing, adding support from digital manipulation, to produce images. His works illustrate how the constructed image of Western avant-garde art has been inspirational, through “museum without walls”, to the culture of the world’s modern art. Suwage’s mode of appropriation is by borrowing iconic imageries as his reference, to serve the metaphors for values actively working between love and hate, amazement and derision at once, in parodying, and so on.

Widayat Widayat was born in Kutoarjo (Central Java, 1919) in the colonial era. After some military training, he took the apprentice study at the Indonesia Art Academy Yogyakarta under painters Hendra Gunawan, Sudarso, Trubus, and Kusnadi. Then Widayat met a Bandung Painter, Kartono Yudhokusumo from whom he got direct influence of decorative style in painting. Widayat paints freely, unburdened by anything except that he always attempts at infusing contents, giving significance to his imaginary space by means of symbols and indications. Watching Widayat’s works, we are taken to archaic natures and to the daily life, without perspective, and without criticize for something. We may remark them as beautiful and alluring, crowding our retinas, innocently accepting reality, fascinatingly interpretable, and mystically thrilling the space. Widayat studied at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta, where hebecame known as a lecturer of the Indonesian Institute of Fine Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta as well as a prominent artist. Since 1950 to 2002, Widayat participated in numerous art exhibitions in Indonesiaas well as internationally, in countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong, Netherlands,Italy, United States, and Australia. Widayat is said to be a maestro after Affandi, as published in the book “Educator and Painter” by ISI Yogyakarta in 1988. Widayat was also a revolutionary artist, and master of gardening and graphics arts. Widayat was the first artist whose exhibition was largely exhibited in the Singapore Art Museum, one of the most important museums in Southeast Asia on September 2007 and it was held for the duration of two months. According to Prof. Soedarso Sp MA, Widayat’s artistic works can be levelled with the works of Henri Rousseau (a France surrealist artist) who has been his great inspiration. Widayat’s works show an immense variety of stories about nature, life, myths, and rituals. They are rich in content, texture, and technique. Widayat’s preference for the simplification and distortion of natural forms had a profound influence on many Indonesian artists. His magic decorative style is a personal visual language mostly derived from folk motifs. He focuses on inner structure rather that outward appearance. The re-petition of basic elements are order with an underlying rhythm to create movement. The artist’s works encompass all of his varied experiences as soldier, student, teacher, and religious family man. Flora and fauna, religion and mythology, masks and portraits, and daily life all are parts of his fantasy world.

Han Snel Masterpiece Singapore 16&17 August 2008 Sold SGD 180,000

Born in 1925 in Scheveningen, Holland, Han Snel arrived in Indonesia as a Dutch soldier in 1946. He had a life-long love affair with Bali, became an Indonesian citizen and lived in Ubud from 1950 until his death in 1998. Balinese themes are Han Snel’s specialism, in particular figures done in a more or expressionist style: he himself prefers to describe his manner with its very conspicuous, curved lines, as ‘roundism’. In his works, Snel focused his attention on the beauty of Balinese women. His colors were varied and lean towards the primary with contrasting area of dark shading. The graphic paintings featured stylized and somewhat elongated women in rich, sensuous colors. His visual imageries, subdued colors and fine lines captured the essence of Ubud and the island as a place where serenity reigned and simple people led an honest life.

Since 1992 he had actively participated in several group exhibitions in major cities in Indonesia; Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Jakarta and Padang. Besides paintings he also produces sculptors. Several of his works also become more rhythmic as he learned about the pattern and textures of woods. Next this phase developed into a figurative one that had more story motifs. His thoughts were stirred towards problems of society as he become interested in social, political and environmental issues around him. His ideas also came from reading the newspaper or watching television. It takes around one or three months to finish a work because he pays a great deal in details which is very complicated and time-consuming. Ardison takes ordinary landscapes through his simple shapes, colors and composition. His characteristic on his works shows aesthetic three-dimensional effect.

Mochtar Apin Born in Padang Panjang, West Sumatra, 1923. He graduated from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 1951 and continued his study of art and handicrafts in Amsterdam finished in 1953. Besides painting, he also created graphic works. His works have been exhibited in many countries. He was among the first who benefited from a Dutch formal education during the colonial period and was able to acquire a strong intellectual basis for producing modern art. From a very young age, he was able to nurture his artistic bent through special instruction from Dutch art teachers. He went on to pursue art at the Kunstnijverheid School in Amsterdam, and the Ecole Nationale Suprieure des Beaux Arts in Paris as well as the Deutsche Akademie der Kuenste in Berlin. Due to his extensive art studies, Mochtar Apin became proficient in a variety of techniques. With such knowledge, he was well equipped to debate on the role of art in Indonesia. In the Indonesian art world, Mochtar Apin’s diverse range of interests and unique versatility in style has left behind an artistic legacy that has held the interest of art connoisseurs to this day. Mochtar Apin’s naked painting presents paradox to apply the concept of representations. He does not represent reality for conclusion like in the work of landscape and realism. His return of representation exactly deconstructs the concept of representation. All his nude figures in his paintings didn’t mean that he directly bring the model to the location. His nude figure was not a representation at all, in fact, it is only Apin’s imaginary. It is unlikely the culture for Indonesian women posing half naked in public. The reality in the picture is none other than the imaginary reality.

The deepest emotion about the struggle of common people’s life, made Hendra keep presenting people in this landscape painting even in small and tiny form. He used the natural objects such as huge tree, sandy beach and blue sea as background to his main subject, like illustrated in the present lot.

He participated in the Association’s First Art Exhibition invited by the head of the Dutch East Indies Associations (1931). Lee Man Fong was a successful commercial artist before engaged in full time painting in 1941. His successful exhibitions in Bandung and Jakarta made him a fast growing artist at that time. He received scholarship from the Dutch government to study painting in Holland (1946). In 1952 he returned to Indonesia and gained more credits as well as acknowledgement. He was officially become a presidential palace’s painter and chief curators of its collection in 1961 and compiled a 5 volume edition of President Sukarno’s art collection. He died in 1988 and remembered as a western vigorous painter and an oriental unique oil painting painter. Lee Man Fong is famous painter who captures gold fishes in magnificent way. Here, light is of prime importance and the subjects are consistently bathed in a luminous glow as presented in this lot. Some gold fishes are swimming freely in the space of an aquarium, still with his essential element by using the light, reflecting the sun’s radiance, Lee success to bring all the goldfishes as a depiction of calmness. The background, unlike the flat, void spaces of Chinese paintings, is likewise illuminated by an almost mysterious glow of white sunlight. Therefore the subjects, reflecting the sun’s radiance, seem also to be lit from the back, creating the effect of “glowing silhouettes”.

091 AY TJOE CHRISTINE (Bandung, 1973) Sang Fanatic 4 Pencil and Watercolor on paper: 29 x 42 cm Signed, lower right SGD 6,500 - 8,000 USD 4,580 - 5,630

Christine Ay Tjoe, was born in Bandung, West-Java, Indonesia, and is one of Indonesia’s most celebrated contemporary female artists. She graduated from studies in Printmaking and Graphic Art at the Bandung Institute of Technology in 1997. Beginning her career as a graphic artist and exploring drypoint technique, Ay Tjoe then moved to working with textiles. Her practice encompasses myriad art forms, from painting on canvas and works on paper to sculpture and large scale installation. Ay Tjoe’s experimentation with drypoint has heavily influenced her practice for she continues to use line to structure her works. Her palette is characterised by earthy tones and deep reds; strong, charged colours that allude to powerful emotions. In her delicate works, Ay Tjoe aims to create various sensory experiences depending on how the viewer chooses to interpret the colour, form, and movement. She embraces the emergence of characters or creatures that form spontaneously in her paintings, using them as representatives for forces of authority and higher beings. Her works are a reflection of her inner thoughts and happenings in her personal life. In 2015, a major retrospective of Ay Tjoe’s work was held at SongEun ArtSpace, Seoul. Ay Tjoe has featured in group exhibitions at institutions such as the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taichung (2012); Fondazione Claudio Buziol, Venice (2011); Shanghai Contemporary (2010); National Gallery, Jakarta (2009); and the China National Museum of Fine Art (2003). Hendra’s paintings have formed a modern Indonesian folk art where they can be seen as the illustrations of a new mythology. The stylized figures of exaggerated profiles, with long necks, protruding noses, and large eyes, echoes the stylization of human form found in wayang. His subjects of women with long tresses, young mothers, wives, fish sellers, fruit vendors express his goddesses and heroines, while the heroes features were illustrates as the fathers, husbands, fishermen and farmers. They inhabit a breathtakingly beautiful paradise of fertile land, rich seas, majestic mountains, rivers, and spectacular beaches. Hendra later paintings are melancholic and emotional as a result of the hardship that he experienced during his thirteen years in Bandung Kebon Waru prison. During his imprisoned time he painted some of his most dreamlike, vibrant and emotional works. He illustrates the sadness and the mystery in a brighter, more saturated, expressionistic and abstract. The present lot depicts Hendra’s concern of common people. Figure of a male seller is serving the lady with her daughter at the front. The lady was wrapped in brightly colored cloth. The aesthetic figures and scene give a strong traditional Indonesia atmosphere which demonstrates the mastery of Hendra’s skill.

In his works, Snel focused his attention on the beauty of Balinese women. His colors were varied and lean towards the primary with contrasting area of dark shading. 119 POPO ISKANDAR (Garut, 1927 – Bandung, 2000) Dua Macan dan Bulan, 1997 Oil on canvas: 92 x 124 cm Signed and dated, lower left: Popo 97 SGD 22,000 - 30,000 USD 15,490 - 21,130

Born in Garut, December 17, 1927. Popo Iskandar started painting in 1944. He graduated from the University of Indonesia and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Besides as a painter he is also an art observer and writer. In 1980 he received art award from Indonesian Government. He has participated in many exhibitions in Indonesia as well as overseas. Popo’s career started with on-the-spot painting, capturing the concrete life events in the field. Although his early years of painting was influenced by Van Gogh’s style, there was an evidence that he had experimented further with some other styles like cubism, abstract composition, Chinese and Japanese calligraphy and other media or methods like monoprints. We could easily see his tendency to paint certain objects in repetition within the coverage of a single style, relying simply on memory and imagination. The major objects he mostly dealt with were no other than cats, roosters and leopards. These kinds of themes had become Popo’s trademark which he treated in a repetitive and minimalist manner. For Popo, the artistic process is no different from the cultural process, that is, it is a long process of study. Every painting is like a reflection. It is an integral part of every one of Popo’s efforts of the past, the present and the future. One of Popo’s works is not a record of what he has seen, but rather an interpretation of what he has observed through subject matter. Popo’s repetitive themes are not merely duplicates his ideas, but an accumulation of his endless exploration towards his rich experiences. The source of his idea of cats is not the form of the cat, but rather its involvement in various situations and conditions which stimulate his ideas and imaginations. Repetitive theme of cats, chickens and leopards probably has become Popo Iskandar’s main contemplation in reflecting the essence of cats, nudity or even mystery of nature.

Born in Cirebon, March 11, 1907. Affandi was considered as the Indonesian Artist par excellent. He was the founder of the Himpunan Pelukis Masyarakat (Community’s Artists Association (1946) and Himpunan Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Artists Association) in 1947, Affandi was committed to creating a new artistic idiom for Indonesia. In the early of 1950s he traveled to India for a grant from Indian Government, he held several one-man shows in several Indian Cities, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Italy. He received an Indonesian Art Award from the Ministry of Education and Culture (1969), the Dag Hammerskjoeld Prize from Italy (1977) and an Indonesian Government the First Class Merit (1978). His works were exhibited in major exhibitions in Asia, Europe, and the Americas and were also be acquired by major art collectors and institutions all over the world since the 1950s. Affandi prefers capturing his subjects exactly as they are by painting them as they appear in their natural setting. In this, he starts of his use of squeezing paint directly on the canvas, a style that he has used since the late fifties. He not only departs from the use of the brush, but makes use of his palms and fingers to apply the paint on the canvas. Affandi’s work exhibits a distinct rhythm full of emotional intensity. The impact of this emotion is communicated visually depending on the emotional drive of the painter himself. The expressionist painter characteristically has an urgency to simultaneously grab the movement of the moment he wants to describe, along with capturing the textures of the object, a drive that often leads him to work much more passionately compared to the naturalists, the realists, or even the impressionists.

Gerard Pieter Adolfs was born 2 January 1898 in Semarang, Central-Java. He was a Dutch East Indies painter and architect. He was already well-known as a talented advertising illustrator, when in 1924 he was first introduced to the public of Yogyakarta as a painter, water-colourist and graphic artist. Each year Adolfs travelled for a few months. He had studios in Florence, Rome, Vienna, Budapest, prag and - together with his Japanese friend Léonard Tsuguharu Fujita - in Paris and exhibited his works of art internationally (Netherlands Indies, Japan, Singapore, USA, England, Holland, Sweden, Norway, France, and Switzerland. Adolfs’ interest in the human element shows an immense evolution. In his early period his figures are mostly depicted on profile, had stall, slender bodies and limbs. Usually the human figures looked quite small-sized, as if man were being measured against nature. But, in his later stylistic period, his figures grew far more. Though anatomical proportions are usually less precise, the people were depicted larger with facial expression and body language become very important. In his works he has always attempted to represent the light, colour and the simple joy of life that impregnates the native scenes of the East. As can be seen from the works reproduced, he has a bold, vigorous style, applying his pigments with quick strokes of the palette knife.

Lee Man Fong was born in Canton, China, 1913. He arrived at Singapore at young age then later moved to Jakarta. He has shown great artistic talent since young. Lee’s subject matter included wide range of human figures, landscapes and animals particularly those commonly found in Chinese brush paintings, such as goldfish, doves, chickens, rabbits, horses and tigers. He developed his paintings by creating a personal expression based on observation of live and nature around him. His paintings often are able to transport us to forgotten places in the wilderness, where old trees, withered mambo grow out of hardened rocks. The present lot was one of the many themes about cock and hen. The pair standing on the hardened rock occupies the foreground, while the background is twisted branches of withered bamboo. Lee showed how it is possible to marry many of the most essential elements of both classical painting traditions – light, shadow and realism on the other hand, and expressionism, experienced calligraphic brushwork, and the balance between form and emptiness on the other.

The main subjects of his work were scenes of Java, Bali, Japan and of North Africa (market sceneries, flamboyant, cock-fights, landscapes and townscapes) and also figures of native people from the place he had visited. Adolfs was focusing on mainly East Javanese landscapes, urban scenes, temple gates and scenes with proa boats. His interest in the architectural element increased in equal measure. The human figures still featured in his compositions as mere “extras”, not as characters. Some of these paintings had a menacing, even macabre quality to them, due to the dramatic light, a result of chiaroscuro. Adolfs probably picked this up from Caravaggio (the inventor of chiaroscuro), whose works and those of other Old Masters, he had studied in Rome during his 1928 study tour. Both the public and the critics showed themselves increasingly aware of the fact that Adolfs had refined his style, and had grown into a truly brilliant interpreter of the fierce tropical light:” In one spot of the painting, the light seems to splash down as from a wide-open shower. The colours are perfectly ablaze there. Once you have perceived that spot, you can’t keep your eyes off it; you keep discovering new realities within that light and that shade; you want to focus on that spot, as the painter must have focused on it when he fixed it on to the canvas.”

Among all the animal paintings by him, Chen's gibbon paintings stand out, as they were noted by Chen's attention to detail and sensitive rendering of the beautiful creatures. His first inspiration from painting gibbons came from a reproduction of a gibbon painting that formed the right triptych of the famous painting, White Robed Guanyin, Crane and Gibbon by the 13th century Southern Song Dynasty Chinese artist Mu Xi. Awed by its lifelike quality, he was convinced with Mu Xi's great skill in close observation of the gibbons. So day and night, Chen studied Mu Xi's print and emulated the painting. Chen had never seen a gibbon when he was in China, and as a result he did not realize that gibbons, unlike monkeys, had no tails. It was only much later in the late-1940s, that a foreigner pointed out his error in his painting, and corrected him. Later on he continued to study the creature's postures and its characteristics, by rearing it in his home garden. Chen Wen Hsi Chinese color on paper illustrates a dimension of great complexity and freshness of Chen’s ink and brush.

158 WIDAYAT (Kutoarjo, 1919 – Jakarta, 2002) Flamboyan, 2001 Oil on canvas: 95 x 125 cm Signed and dated, lower right: H. Widajat, 2001 Signed, titled and dated on the reverse Literature: 83rd Anniversary Haji Widayat “The Older he gets the better he is” Solo Exhibition, Published Museum Widayat, pg. 40 SGD 28,000 - 35,000 USD 19,720 - 24,650

Widayat is a famous painter with “decora-magic” style, which means the works were fully decorated and can produced magical effect. His works are based on his daily life experiences. Such experiences he imparts through the representations of human and animal figures, plants and imaginary beings, characterized by spontaneity and uninterrupted strong lines. Most of his paintings can give magnificent excitement by his ability in creating stylistic forms of trees, birds, fishes, or his favorite animal. The form also gives decorative motif with the use of hard and dark color producing textures and subtle impression.
