He was a student of the Academy of Arts in Rotterdam before working as lithographer for the Dutch Colonial Army in the Dutch Indies prior to the Second World War. He moved to Bali in 1956 to engage in full time painting and became an Indonesian Citizen, produced as well as taught painting at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Many of his paintings depict the nature of his surrounding environment. He had several solo exhibitions in Bandung Institute of Technology, The Honolulu East West Center, and the Center of Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta. Born in Rotterdam, 20 April 1889. He came to Indonesia ca. 1918 as a civil servant to survey the country. In this function he traveled all over the archipelago. The artist participated in several group exhibitions in Jakarta, Medan and Surabaya between 1918 and1939. He returned to the Netherlands in 1946, where he settled in Zeist. Painter, Illustrator and draughtsman of harbor scenes, City views, and landscapes, in an accurate impressionistic style.He died in Zeist, the Netherlands, February 3, 1966.

Alimin Tamin Born in Solok, West Sumatra 1932. He learnt painting under S. Sudjojono and Harijadi. In 1952, he joined the Indonesian Young Artists Gallery. He founded Matahari painters association together with Nashar, Wakijan, Mardian, and others (1954). He also established the Kedatom Gallery, Danpasar, Bali (1960). Alimin began his study in painting under the guidance of S.Sudjojono and Harijadi in SIM (Young Indonesian Artists), Yogyakarta in 1952. In 1954, he moved to Jakarta, where together with Nashar, Wim Nirahua, Mardian, A. Wakidjan, and Alex Wetik, Alimin founded the Matahari Artists Association at Balai Budaya, Jakarta. In 1957, Alimin moved to Bali where he taught painting at the Department of Fine Arts and Architecture, Udayana University, Denpasar. Alimin and Gusti Sholihin co-founded “Kedaton Studio� in Denpasar in 1960 and he was the Chairman of CITRA - Indonesian Artists Association in Denpasar, Bali from 1975 to 1978. Alimin has participated in exhibitions in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung, and Bali. Alimin was greatly fond of painting themes surrounding Balinese people and its traditions. In the present lot, Dua Gadis Bali, Alimin illustrates two Balinese ladies preparing offerings. One of the most striking things about Bali is the daily profusion of offerings. Offerings are important as they are to give pleasure to the gods and demons. They provide good karma to those who are involved in their preparations. Nearly every village has its own unique forms of offerings and some Balinese even spend all their lives making them. Women mostly, but not exclusively: it depends on type of offering. The work in preparing an offering, itself is an element of worship, and is regarded as part of its content. Here, Alimin present the arrangements of fruits and flowers for the offerings in decorative style. The realistic portrayal of the figures is described in a static scene with detail of clothing and ornaments. 006

Lim was recognized as one of the prominent pioneer watercolorists here and Malaya. While studying at Raffles Institution from 1928 – 1932, he received formal art training from Richard Walker (the 1st Art Inspector of Schools). When he left R.I., Lim continued with his deep interest in art inspired through the publications of art books and journals of Western art. His impressive watercolor techniques had influenced and inspired many watercolorists here and Malaya—artist Ong Kim Seng, being one of the notables here, acknowledged Lim’s mentorship for executing plein-air art.Through the years of this medium exploration and experimentation, Lim had developed and evolved his unique styles of watercolor treatment admired by many in the art fraternity. He was equally adept painting landscapes, rural and river scenes and also some contemporary subjects. Lim was a founding member of Singapore Watercolor Society in 1969, received the National Day Long Service Medal the same year. In 1972 and 1974, Lim was awarded the National Day Art Exhibition Certificate. Like the five pioneer artists Liu Kang, Chen Wen Hsi, Cheong Soo Pieng, Chen Chong Swee and Georgette Chen, Lim Cheng Hoe was honoured for his admirable contribution in the watercolor medium and was presented with a Retrospective Exhibition in 1986 by the National Museum Art Gallery, Singapore. Agung Mangu Putra Born in 1963 at Sangeh, Central Bali, Mangu Putra was trained in Yogyakarta at Indonesia’s premier art school, Institute Seni Indonesia (originally ASRI, the Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia). He majored in Design and Visual Communications and worked as a graphic designer until 1997 when he began to pursue career in the Fine Arts. This exciting and very talented artist has participated in a number of group and solo exhibitions throughout Indonesia as well as internationally in Singapore, China, South Korea, Australia, and the United Kingdom. He received awards as the Best in Design Arts (during the 4th and 6th anniversary of ISI, as the finalist of Philip Morris Award in 1994 and Indofood Art Award 2002, Second Place, Jakarta. Mangu Putra’s works arise from intense contact with the world as a conscious expression of his main creative orientation. Representations of natural phenomena, along with the inner pulse of life, form the main stream of his search. The natural world, such as mountains and coasts, are depicted as identifiable objects. Some of his works with abstract designs imply natural images, such as the character of water and the texture and colours of earth or stone. Mangu seems to put nature as an endless source of his inspiration. The works he produces are from historical explorations depict a dialogue between his thoughts and feelings towards what he read and observed during his experiment. His paintings are not meant to inform, but rather to share his feelings and thoughts through art. He observed the historical events through photographs which later he reimagined those events and translated to his canvas.

He graduated from the Department of Art, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 1953, where he later taught, becoming a Professor in the Art Department in 1972. He received a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation to study at Iowa State University and the New York Art Student's League in USA 1956-1957. He also studied in The Netherlands and Australia in 1977, a Pakistan in 1980. He held his solo exhibition in Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung and Yogyakarta. He also has participated in several group exhibitions such as in Indonesia, China, Japan, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, India, Vietnam, USA, Switzerland, UK, France, Brazil and Saudi Arabia. He received some Awards including the Anugerah Seni Art Award from the Indonesian Government in 1972 and awards from the Jakarta Arts Council at the Indonesian Painting Biennials in 1974 and 1978.

Choo Keng Kwang Born in the year of 1931 in Singapore, Choo Keng Kwang is a first-generation Singaporean artist well-known for his oil paintings of landscape, animals and nature. He is an anchored figure in the Singapore art circle for traditional paintings as well as one of the most eminent Singapore first generation artist. As an artist, Choo is widely recognized as one of Singapore’s first-generation artists, along with his contemporaries such as Georgette Chen and Liu Kang. His artworks have been commissioned by royalty, dignitaries and governments. Choo is best known for his oil paintings of doves as symbols of peace and his enormously popular Singapore’s Chinatown scenes. A former teacher and school principal of Sin Hua School, he was Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA)’s head of Art Education until his retirement. He has held and participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions locally and abroad. Choo’s works convey “impressions” of the scene he painted. The viewer’s attention is drawn deliberately chosen focal points in the picture, the rest is faded off in a swirl of muted colours, leaving mind’s eye to fill in the missing details. Chen Wen Hsi Born in Baigong, Caozhu, 1906. Chen Wen Hsi studied art at the Hsin Hwa Art Academy in Shanghai. He became a lecturer at the Nangyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore. His paintings were strongly influenced by Chan (Zen) and the unorthodox Qing School of Yangzhou. He actively participated in several exhibitions outside Singapore which also incidentally promote Singapore. He was awarded the Public Service Star from the President Tun Yusof Bin Ishak and received honorary doctorate from the National University of Singapore. He became famous since his oil study on formalism, cubism, and expressive abstraction. Chen Wen Hsi is Singapore’s foremost painter that combines Chinese and Western techniques in his semi abstract work. Chen Wen-hsi is renowned for his skill in painting animal themes. Chicken, gibbons, herons, carps and squirrels are some of his favourite subjects. Wen Hsi’s constant eagerness to strike for something new led him to learn finger painting – a technique that dates from the Tang Dynasty. This drawing style has enabled him to produce unpredictable broken stroke on paper. He developed his skill in finger painting, ink-and-brush, oil, sketches, abstracts and semi-abstract techniques. Every subject he paints, whether lotuses, gibbons, egrets, monkeys, squirrels, birds, or flowers and trees, is palpably vibrant.

Born in Padang Panjang, West Sumatra, 1923. He graduated form the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 1951 and continued his study of art and handicrafts in Amsterdam finished in 1953. Besides painting, he also created graphic works. His works have been exhibited in many countries. He was among the first who benefited from a Dutch formal education during the colonial period and was able to acquire a strong intellectual basis for producing modern art. From a very young age, he was able to nurture his artistic bent through special instruction from Dutch art teachers. He went on to pursue art at the Kunstnijverheid School in Amsterdam, and the Ecole Nationale Suprieure des Beaux Arts in Paris as well as the Deutsche Akademie der Kuenste in Berlin. Due to his extensive art studies, Mochtar Apin became proficient in a variety of techniques. With such knowledge, he was well equipped to debate on the role of art in Indonesia. In the Indonesian art world, Mochtar Apin’s diverse range of interests and unique versatility in style has left behind an artistic legacy that has held the interest of art connoisseurs to this day.

Roland Strasser Roland Strasser was born in Vienna, Austria and studied art in Munich, Germany. Strasser was one of the great painter adventurers of the early 20th century, and one of the last Orientalist romantics. His energetic paintings and drawings captured and portrayed the lives of subjects from regions and cultures still considered “exotic” by European viewers of the era. Once described by an admirer as “a strange, restless painter, who was known for painting subjects that were difficult or even dangerous to paint. Early on he received a commission in Holland and from there Strasser became aware of Indonesian art and culture. In 1920, Strasser traveled first to Thailand, New Guinea, and finally Indonesia where he lived for a considerable amount of time. In Bali, Strasser met fellow artist Willem Dooijewaard which whom the two worked and travelled together. Strasser was especially drawn to the Balinese culture and captured this exotic new culture on canvas. In1952, Strasser migrated to the United States where he worked till his death in 1974. Stresser’s works are in the collection of many private collectors and museums internationally and is represented in the collection amassed by President Sukarno.

Affandi Born in Cirebon, March 11, 1907. He is considered as the Indonesian Artist par excellent. He was the founder of the Himpunan Pelukis Masyarakat (Community’s Artists Association (1946) and Himpunan Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Artists Association) in 1947, Affandi was committed to creating a new artistic idiom for Indonesia. In the early of 1950s he traveled to India for a grant from Indian Government, he held several one-man shows in several Indian Cities, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Italy. He received an Indonesian Art Award from the Ministry of Education and Culture (1969), the Dag Hammerskjoeld Prize from Italy (1977) and an Indonesian Government the First Class Merit (1978). His works were exhibited in major exhibitions in Asia, Europe, and the Americas and were also be acquired by major art collectors and institutions all over the world since the 1950s. Besides Borobudur, Affandi also painted other Indonesian icons, such as the Bird of Paradise and the Peacock. Affandi spent several days observing the charming peacocks at the Gembiraloka Zoo in Yogyakarta before finally painting this picture. Only after he managed to understand the creature’s behavior could he paint it.

Ahmad Sadali Born in Garut, West Java, 1924, Ahmad Sadali was known for his abstract art and titles that never give away any clues on the content of the painting, such as Gold on Purple Relief, or Gold on a wrinkled plane. Considered the father of Indonesian abstract art, and a teacher at the Bandung Institute of Technology, he exerted a wide influence on his students such as Umi Dachlan. Ahmad Sadali was known as an artist of abstract art, while AD. Pirous another abstract painter, who has brought Arabic calligraphy to the level of expressive art, has developed a tendency toward the abstract. The colors, the pieces, the etched gold tinsel, still remains one direction, a mystery. Something that was unreachable, but very large and powerful. In each of his works he always worshiped the Gods greatness. His paintings are sometimes full of question, because it relies on something that causes people to take them into account. He talked about something vague, something grand and beautiful. But because the technique and the intensity have reached a certain level, so we felt there was honesty in his search, he was so convincing. Sadali take us to the Lord’s feet with the fields of rich, colorful and emotionless. He had managed to relate us with the world beyond our reach. 049

Zef Chevallier born in Jakarta, 10 February 1959. He is a multi talented artist, graphic designer, and fashion and interior designer whose works are the results of the different cultures which he has experienced. Born in Indonesia, Zef moved to the Netherlands in 1977 where he spent 26 years working, studying, and absorbing the Dutch culture. Zef worked for 11 years before deciding to further his education and enrolled in the Leiden Educational Institution (LOI), Leiden, Netherlands in Interior Art Design and Architecture. During his education, Zef worked on his own art design and oil paintings, and his art was exhibited in art galleries in Roosendaal, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam from 1991 to 1995. Exposed to different cultures and coming from Indonesia, who has been colonized by different cultures as the Portuguese, Japanese, and Dutch, Zef’s paints his philosophy of the future and how a cohesive world should be. In Zef’s words, “The new world that is our destination no matter if we are still alive or dead. The message for our future lies in peace, happiness, freedom, and love. No human power, no religion, no politics, no sadness, no illness, no wars, and everybody in the new world living in equal societies, respect, and are honest to one another”.

Ong Kim Seng Born in 1945 in Singapore, a self-taught observer, traveler and passionate learner- Ong Kim Seng has climbed the ranks of formal appreciation to claim his title as one of the most celebrated water colorists. He is considered as one of Singapore’s most prominent artistic icons. The artist has shown mastery over the capture of light, often basking his creations in the warmth of sunlight, expertly using positive space and shadows to create stunningly realistic depictions of silhouettes and representation. Ong Kim Seng has exhibited worldwide and won a multitude of awards, including six awards from the American Watercolor Society, and the coveted Cultural Medallion for visual arts by the Ministry Of Information and the Arts, Singapore. The artist was also President of the Singapore Watercolor Society from 1991 to 2001 when he became Honorary President. Ong’s works have graced the collections of a number of museums and art galleries as well as the residences of foreign dignitaries such as Queen Elizabeth II of England and Kofi Annan, the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Choo Keng Kwang Mr Choo’s passion for Fine Art started when he was just a child. His interest was sparked from the comics and cartoons he liked to read and watch. Mr Choo did not follow the path of a full-time artist upon his graduation from Catholic High School and NAFA in 1953. He began as a teacher and principal at Sin Hua School and was the Head of Art Education at NAFA from 1984 until his retirement. Despite his teaching commitments, he would spend his free time and afternoons after work doing what he loves – painting. Artist Choo Keng Kwang is famous for painting scenes of old Chinatown and doves. Mr Choo’s oil paintings look romantic and beautiful at first glance, with a strong nostalgic vitality that will appeal to the masses. From his beloved doves to his muse, Chinatown, his Nanyang-style works feature a wide array of subjects in various countries, made in woodcuts, oil and batik-style painting. There is history in all these paintings. He shows us his paintings of old Chinatown, which capture nostalgic scenes of the wet market. Chinatown was one of his favourite themes along with the Singapore river scenes and market. After the old Chinatown was demolished, he switched to painting doves. In his dove paintings, the backgrounds are always misty and the doves are looking at one another, and they seem to be communicating. The doves are drawn in different postures and they are composed to look natural.

Umberto Mariani was born in Italy in 1936. He graduated from the Accademia di Brera under Achille Funi with honours. He lives and works in Milan, Italy, and has become the subject of academic essays by virtually every critic in Italy. Umberto Mariani is a Post-War multimedia artist whose work exudes a special affinity to the folds of textiles. Although he studied the masters of the Romantic period and was surrounded with the emerging movements of Pop Art and Surrealism, the most profound influences he drew his style from were the Classical Greek statues that he grew up observing on the streets of Italy. Mariani’s fascination with the delicate folds of fabric carved out of the hard white marble would later develop into a desire to ma- nipulate the material. He picked up his first projects doing monumental narrative work for the St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican as well as mosaics and frescos for the St. Antony Sanctuary in Rome during the 1960s; and in the 1970s he was widely exhibited in Europe at institutions such as the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels and the Musée Moderne in Paris. Born in Padang Panjang, West Sumatra, 1923. He graduated form the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 1951 and continued his study of art and handicrafts in Amsterdam finished in 1953. Besides painting, he also created graphic works. His works have been exhibited in many countries. He was among the first who benefited from a Dutch formal education during the colonial period and was able to acquire a strong intellectual basis for producing modern art. From a very young age, he was able to nurture his artistic bent through special instruction from Dutch art teachers. He went on to pursue art at the Kunstnijverheid School in Amsterdam, and the Ecole Nationale Suprieure des Beaux Arts in Paris as well as the Deutsche Akademie der Kuenste in Berlin. Due to his extensive art studies, Mochtar Apin became proficient in a variety of techniques. With such knowledge, he was well equipped to debate on the role of art in Indonesia. In the Indonesian art world, Mochtar Apin’s diverse range of interests and unique versatility in style has left behind an artistic legacy that has held the interest of art connoisseurs to this day. Popo Iskandar Born in Garut, December 17, 1927. He started painting in 1944. He graduated from the University of Indonesia and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Besides as a painter he is also an art observer and writer. In 1980 he received art award from Indonesian Government. He has participated in many exhibitions in Indonesia as well as overseas. His works were mostly on animal such as chicken, cat, and tiger. He held his solo exhibitions at Taman Ismail Marzuki Arts Center, Jakarta (1987, 1992, and 1994), National Gallery, Jakarta (1999) and participated in group exhibitions at KIAS, USA (1990), The Best of Indonesia, Jakarta (1997), and Slovenia Gradec (1997). For Popo, the artistic process is no different from the cultural process, that is, it is a long process of study. Every painting is like a reflection. It is an integral part of every one of Popo’s efforts of the past, the present and the future. One of Popo’s works is not a record of what he has seen, but rather an interpretation of what he has observed through subject matter. Popo’s repetitive themes are not merely duplicates his ideas, but an accumulation of his endless exploration towards his rich experiences. The source of his idea of cats is not the form of the cat, but rather its involvement in various situations and conditions which stimulate his ideas and imaginations. Repetitive theme of cats, chickens and leopards probably has become Popo Iskandar’s main contemplation in reflecting the essence of cats, nudity or even mystery of nature.

Born in Zaandam, the Netherlands, 1916. He was a student of the Academy of Arts in Rotterdam before working as lithographer for the Dutch Colonial Army in the Dutch Indies prior to the Second World War. He moved to Bali in 1956 to engage in full time painting and became an Indonesian Citizen, produced as well as taught painting at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Many of his paintings depict the nature of his surrounding environment. He had several solo exhibitions in Bandung Institute of Technology, The Honolulu East West Center, and the Center of Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta. He received the “Dharma Kusuma� art awards from the local government of Bali.

Affandi Affandi’s works are explosions of paint on canvas, expressing the observed world through pure impulse and energy. During the period of 1980’s, Affandi has been using vivid colours like red, yellow, light green and bright blue. His former black murky tones have been replaced by a greater part of the canvas being left blank. Though Affandi only painted what he observed and never approached his works from any kind of philosophical or analytical starting point, he was particularly fond of Bali and Javanese culture. Affandi never thought much about painting styles. His attention was focused more on basic principles, such as his love for what is natural. There are some works that use natural landscapes as their subject matter. Affandi especially liked to depict seascapes, or coastal landscapes with fishing boats. However, these works are far from being naturalistic, as they are hardly related to the matter of sky color, as affected by the sunlight. The natural landscapes seen in Affandi’s paintings do not show any “realistic effect”, either. It is generally known that Affandi’s landscapes – as well as other paintings – reveal lines (the result of paint applied directly on the canvas using the painter’s hands instead of brushes) that area arabesque and staccato in nature ant rhythm. The images in many of his landscapes are even difficult to recognize. His feelings about the land and its people, like farmer, fisherman, and vendor can be seen in the present lot. The boats are coloured in dark hues acknowledge the shadows and the mystery inherent in daily life, especially in Bali.

Ronald Manulang painting technique has developed from the classical tradition of realism mixed with ideas of pop arts. His objects are human figures that are deconstructed in terms of their roles and positions. They are people of old times. This means he has to make a journey into time to be able to make these people and shapes the objects of his artworks. But, the paintings that show special objects with clear time that is today are a series of his self-portraits paintings. He makes use of any available pictures and photographs. He also uses computer using Photoshop and Corel Draw program. By using computer he wants to pursue the accuracy of facial character, precision of composition and coloring. After printing the image, he manually paints the image in scale adjusted with the canvas. With soft brushstrokes, color or black-white halftone technique, he tries to obtain certain degree of plasticity of the object. He illustrates the object in great details, especially for the series of his history parody. One of the greatest Baroque sculptors, and the only one to rival Bernini (15981680), the Italian artist Alessandro Algardi was the main exponent of the style known as high baroque classicism. This was a style mid-way between the dramatic naturalism of Bernini and the restrained classicism of the Flemish artist Francois Duquesnoy (1594-1643), and was the forerunner of many monuments in Italy, France and Flanders. Active mainly in Rome, Algardi is best known for three major works of Baroque sculpture: the Tomb of Pope Leo XI (1634-44), the colossal relief-sculpture of Pope Leo Driving Attila from Rome (1646-53) - both in St Peter’s Basilica in Rome - and the sculptural group of The Decapitation of St Paul (1641-47) in S Paolo, Bologna. Also famous for his portrait busts, he is considered to be one of the finest ever portrait sculptors and a master of marble sculpture.

Srihadi Soedarsono Srihadi express the essence of classical Javanese dances such as the bedoyo Ketawang as a symbolic definition of life. The slow, gentle, refined movements of the dance inspire a mood of contemplation. With the refined music of the Javanese gamelan accompaniment, the entire dance seems to be a form of meditation, thereby justifying its description as a sacred dance. In philosophical terms, the dance movements have meaning and they symbolize principles of ethnics and aesthetics. They also express the level of sublime spiritual energy of the dancer. Srihadi has explored other aspects of the inner nature of movement besides those of immobility and diffused dynamism. Some lie midway between these two tendencies. He has explored composed movement, such as that practiced in the traditional dance of the Javanese palaces, in particular the Bedoyo Ketawang, which is considered to be the epitome of Javanese refinement. In the paintings on this theme, the fuzzy atmosphere shrouding the figures are gone; rather, the head and limbs are suspended, almost immobile, and drawn with an extreme delicacy, otherwise found only in the artist’s work depicting wayang puppets. Only the cloth moves, slowly drifting along the ground, merging dark violet into black. There is a visual rhythm set up by the inert head and limbs, the color of the headdress, and the casual placement of the hanging white garlands.

S. Sudjojono Sudjojono was a prolific artist and writer. His artistic oeuvre covers a wide spectrum, from paintings, sketches, drawings, public art and reliefs as well as ceramic works. His style and artistic preoccupation were also diverse, from his early and monumental works, which significantly reflect on the true spirit of Indonesia and the people during the war and their struggle against independence; to landscapes; still-lifes; portraits and renditions of his more personal life and family at later years. S. Sudjojono paintings often derived from his fantasy and memory he personally experienced. He often put joyful humor as a cloak over his painting. It’s an image that sometimes gets into his works because humor was always passing by his life. Because of his sense of humor, his works tends to trigger a smile or laughter if not poetic, sentimental, emotional or heroic. His works often come to us in caricature spirit. He used a combination of fantasy and memory to create his surrealistic landscapes. Sometimes, he incorporated elements derived from places that he had seen in books or actually visited. S. Sudjojono paintings have a typical harsh and wild strokes as if the paint has been poured directly onto canvas. His observation of his surroundings seemed spontaneous, as though they were snapshots of views that appealed to him.

Sunaryo Born in Banyumas, Central Java, 1943. He studied at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) majoring Art Department in 1969 and continued to study marble carving for 7 months at Carrara, Italy in 1975. Sunaryo is an artist who mixes figurative themes with abstract backgrounds using very refined color palette and graceful lines that show great technical mastery. His works are dominated with lines and forms, mostly found in the use of white, brown, grey and black colors. Since 1978, his works have been granted numerous awards such as Honourable Mention in The Phillip Morris Group of Companies Asean Art Awards (1994,1995,1996), Honorable mention from Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Culture for enhancing Indonesian paintings creativity (1998). Back in the 1980s, Sunaryo established himself with his lyrical paintings of Indonesian themes, such as Balinese dancers and barongs (masked dancers who symbolize the “spirit king”), often incorporating traditional art forms and motifs. Sunaryo’s dancer figures theme are very much loved and enjoyed by art lovers. Sometimes the figures have become stereotypes but each has its own particular nuances to the character.

Hendra Gunawan Hendra Gunawan created paintings conveying his great feelings and deepest emotions for his country and people. He inspired his paintings with sympathy, compassion, and affection about common people. He took the daily lives of people subjects for his paintings. He explored their everyday lives, capturing them movingly on canvas in his inimitable style. Portrays of women figures, sellers or mother and child were on old theme that constantly revisited throughout the artist’s career. Hendra women are types, not clearly distinguishable individuals, and they are nourishing, nursing, mothering beauties, voluptuous and undulating bodies wrapped in brightly colored cloth. He used exaggerated profiles, with long necks, protruding noses, and large eyes, echoes the stylization of human form found in wayang. He used the natural painting such as mountain and beach as background to his main subject, like illustrated this present lot. Hendra’s stylistic figures and landscapes are perhaps influenced by his deep knowledge of rich signs and symbols of Javanese culture. Java’s monumental landscapes illustrated in decorative approach of color are also relates to the deeper level of traditional artistic expression in Indonesia.

Affandi Affandi was taught at the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts in Yogyakarta in early 1955. He received a scholarship from the U. S. government to study arts education in 1957, after participating in International exhibitions in Brazil and Italy. He was made an Honorary Professor of Painting by Ohio State University, and in 1974 was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Singapore. He also received the Peace Award from the Dag Hammarskjoeld Foundation in 1977, and the title of Grand Maestro in Florence, Italy. The significant and distinguished works from Affandi was his strong lines, expressive gestural scribbles and spontaneous. He did not ornament figures, the lines were produced by his technique squeezing the paint directly from the tube onto the canvas, using his fingers and palms to direct the medium over its surface and never mixed his colors. He approached paint as a medium in the same way that he did for pencil and charcoal, subduing the subtle modalities of color to the movement of the hand and the creation of line. Affandi’s paintings dominated with a strong and distinctive character build in humanistic point of view. The theme of his paintings always forwarded the humanity aspects of many events. He was a very intuitive and emotional painter, and his works were heartfelt expressions. He only painted what he observed and never approached his works from any kind of philosophical or analytical starting point.

Chen Wen Hsi Born in Baigong, Caozhu, 1906. Chen Wen Hsi studied art at the Hsin Hwa Art Academy in Shanghai. He became a lecturer at the Nangyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore. His paintings were strongly influenced by Chan (Zen) and the unorthodox Qing School of Yangzhou. He actively participated in several exhibitions outside Singapore which also incidentally promote Singapore. He was awarded the Public Service Star from the President Tun Yusof Bin Ishak and received honorary doctorate from the National University of Singapore. He became famous since his oil study on formalism, cubism, and expressive abstraction. Besides Chinese brush painting, Wen Hsi also produced abstract compositions in oils and Chinese inks of which his paintings showed a strong influence of analytical Cubism and Fauvism with non-naturalistic and exuberant colours. This style has heightened the vividly expression and exoticism of Southeast Asia. Chen painted ceaselessly through his life. Numerous solo and group exhibitions were held in Singapore and around the world. Wen Hsi’s artistic excellence was recognized. Among the many awards he had received are the Public Service Star in 1964, a Gold Medal by the National Museum of History, Taiwan in 1980, the first recipient of the ASEAN Cultural and Communication Award for outstanding artists in 1987 and received an honorary doctorate from the National University of Singapore.

Li Tianbing Born in 1974, in the southern province of Guilin, China, Tianbing Li moved to Paris at the age of 22 to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Here he came in contact with a wealth of visual and cultural resources and formal histories. Surrounded by such diversity, Tianbing Li quickly developed a distinctive visual language with which to express his own cultural origins. This draws on both traditional Chinese techniques and contemporary Western references. His work was soon commanding a similar level of international attention afforded to elder contemporaries such as Zhang Huan and Yan Pei Ming. When Tianbing Li arrived in Paris he had with him a tiny album of just five small, black and white photographs of himself as a young boy. To have childhood photographs of oneself was a privilege in 1970s China. A family-owned camera was a rare and expensive commodity and so children’s formative years went largely unrecorded. Tianbing Li ‘s father worked as a soldier in the army’s propaganda unit and was able to intermittently borrow a camera to record his son’s infancy at the ages of three, four and five years old. These images have come to play an integral role in Li Tianbing’s work. Being an only child in China was a condition shared by many children of his generation, and one the artist has described as a deeply lonely experience with profound psychological effects. Consequently, the artist often sought refuge in his own imagination, inventing games inhabited by fictitious characters. This compelling biography informs Tianbing Li ‘s poetic childhood portraits and we see it in its most vivid expression in 2006 with the introduction of an imagined brother to his painterly repertoire. Later works depict the artist accompanied by a host of brothers and playmates, which have come to form a complete yet entirely ‘imagined’ family album. On a personal level the paintings offer an intimate portrait of a fantasized childhood, where fiction and fantasy seamlessly merge. On a far wider reaching scale, the work articulates the shared loss of a generation who grew up under an authoritative dictate exercised at its most personal level. Li’s compositions interweave the dualities present in China today: East and West, communism and capitalism, ancient culture and modern consumerism. Li has held solo exhibitions at: Stephen Friedman Gallery, London; L&M Arts Gallery, New York; Galerie Albert Benamou, Paris; Galerie Loft, Beitou; Kashya Hildebrand Gallery, Zurich; Galerie Deborah Zafman, Paris. Gerard Pieter Adolfs was born on 2 January 1898 in Semarang, Central Java. He spent his youth in Java and received at home his first artistic inspirations. His father, Gerardus Cornelis Adolfs, was an architect and a versatile amateur (painter, photographer, piano and violin player as well as a pole vaulter). Adolfs studied architecture in Amsterdam. After graduating, he was drawn back to Java, were he designed houses in Yogyakarta, Solo and Surabaya. But soon he swapped the drawing pen for the dry-point, pencil and brush and from then on dedicated his whole life to painting. He was already well-known as a talented advertising illustrator, when in 1924 he was first introduced to the public of Yogyakarta as a painter, water-colourist and graphic artist. Each year Adolfs travelled for a few months, leaving his family in Surabaya. He had studios in Florence, Rome, Vienna, Budapest, Prag and (together with his Japanese friend Fujita) in Paris and exhibited his works of art internationally (Netherlands Indies, Japan, Singapore, USA, England, Holland, Sweden, Norway, France, Switzerland . . .) The main subjects of his work were scenes of Java, Bali, Japan and of North Africa (market sceneries, cock-fights, landscapes and townscapes) In 1940 - shortly before the occupation of Holland - Adolfs came back to Europe and settled in Amsterdam. On 22 February 1944, during an exhibition at the Kunstzaal Pollmann, the largest part of Adolfs‘ paintings was destroyed by the bombardment of Nijmegen. But Adolfs kept on working. He wrote and illustrated a book about his memories of Surabaya and exhibited in a lot of well-known galleries. He lived mostly in Amsterdam - interrupted by longer stays in Scandinavia, France, Spain, Italy and North Africa. In 1967 he retired to a small village in South-Holland. On 1 February 1968, G.P. Adolfs died in s’Hertogenbosch - Holland.

Ahmad Sadali Sadali was graduated from the Department of Art, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 1953, where he later taught, becoming a Professor in the Art Department in 1972. He received a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation to study at Iowa State University and the New York Art Student’s League in USA 1956-1957. He also studied in The Netherlands and Australia in 1977, a Pakistan in 1980. He held his solo exhibition in Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung and Yogyakarta. He also has participated in several group exhibitions such as in Indonesia, China, Japan, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, India, Vietnam, USA, Switzerland, UK, France, Brazil and Saudi Arabia. He received several Awards including the Anugerah Seni Art Award from the Indonesian Government in 1972 and awards from the Jakarta Arts Council at the Indonesian Painting Biennials in 1974 and 1978. There are several stages within his artistic progress. In his early stage of advancement, his painting showed the influenced of synthetic cubism. This was his major artistic credo in the 1950’s. At the same time, he also made figurative paintings depicted in an emotional way that showed the influence of dominant art discourse. He abandoned the cubistic style in the early 1960’s and produced afterwards abstract painting by deforming landscape paintings. Colors in his canvases previously arranged within geometric pattern were freed.

Srihadi Soedarsono Srihadi is an artist with a deep cultural background. His integrity as a creative artist was formed through his formal education as well as through his life experiences. There are two important aspects in Srihadi’s paintings: first, the artistic value of color composition, and second, the philosophical value that reflects the meaning of life, cultural, and social value. Some of his figurative paintings, especially the dancers, look deceptively similar, and that the figures have become stereotypes, but one should try to appreciate and study the details and minimal variations. Srihadi pays particular attention to the characteristic of the dancer and the artistic form of the dance. Every dance has its language or vocabulary of movement and type of costume, all of which imbued with philosophical meaning. The dancing figures in Srihadi’s painting were characterized with the use of other elements such as mask, fan, mirror, offerings or flowers. In the present lot the figure was posing in elegant style holding a fan in front of her chest. The way she looked directed us to a stage of waiting for something or perhaps just a symbolical meaning of her own self contemplation.

Born in Kisaran, Sumatra, 1914. He first studied painting under the artist Pringadi, and later from Jasaki, a Japanese painter. In 1937 he founded the Persagi Indonesian Artists Association in Jakarta. In 1970 he was awarded recognition in art by the Indonesian government. His works have been exhibited in the Netherlands and in the Fukuoka Art Museum in Japan (1980). Local exhibitions have been held in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Denpasar and Bandung. He died in Jakarta (1986).

Dullah was born in Solo, 1919. He studied painting under Affandi and Sudjojono but has his own distinctive style of naturalism. He was well known for his landscape and portraits paintings. He was one of the founders of HBS – Surakarta Cultural Community (1950). In 1956, he edited book of former Presiden Soekarno’s Private Collection of Indonesian Art (volume I & II). Since the early days of the independence, Dullah was very close to Soekarno, the first President of the Republic of Indonesia and was appointed by Soekarno to care for the President’s private art collection and as curator of the state painting collections. At age 70, Dullah built his museum, now a cultural landmark, as his dedication to a love of the arts over a creative lifetime. He has had numerous art exhibitions in Indonesia and overseas and in 1988 his work was included in the Art of Bali exhibition held at the East West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Lee was a successful commercial artist before he engaged as a full time artist in 1941. Lee arrived at Singapore at young age then later moved to Jakarta, Indonesia where his successful exhibitions in Indonesia earned him a fast growing reputation. In 1946, Lee received a scholarship from the Dutch government to study arts in Holland. In 1952 he returned to Indonesia and gained more credits as well as acknowledgement where he officially become a presidential palace’s painter and chief curators of its collection in 1961 and compiled a 5 volume edition of President Sukarno’s art collection. Richard Texier was born in 1955, he lives and works in Paris. Today he is widely regarded as one of the best living artists of his generation. Widayat Widayat was born in Kutoarjo (Central Java, 1919) in the colonial era. After some military training, he took the apprentice study at the Indonesia Art Academy Yogyakarta under painters Hendra Gunawan, Sudarso, Trubus, and Kusnadi. Then Widayat met a Bandung Painter, Kartono Yudhokusumo from whom he got direct influence of decorative style in painting. Widayat paints freely, unburdened by anything except that he always attempts at infusing contents, giving significance to his imaginary space by means of symbols and indications. Watching Widayat’s works, we are taken to archaic natures and to the daily life, without perspective, and without criticize for something. We may remark them as beautiful and alluring, crowding our retinas, innocently accepting reality, fascinatingly interpretable, and mystically thrilling the space. Widayat studied at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta, where hebecame known as a lecturer of the Indonesian Institute of Fine Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta as well as a prominent artist. Since 1950 to 2002, Widayat participated in numerous art exhibitions in Indonesiaas well as internationally, in countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong, Netherlands,Italy, United States, and Australia. Widayat is said to be a maestro after Affandi, as published in the book “Educator and Painter” by ISI Yogyakarta in 1988. Widayat was also a revolutionary artist, and master of gardening and graphics arts. Widayat was the first artist whose exhibition was largely exhibited in the Singapore Art Museum, one of the most important museums in Southeast Asia on September 2007 and it was held for the duration of two months. According to Prof. Soedarso Sp MA, Widayat’s artistic works can be levelled with the works of Henri Rousseau (a France surrealist artist) who has been his great inspiration. Widayat’s works show an immense variety of stories about nature, life, myths, and rituals. They are rich in content, texture, and technique. Widayat’s preference for the simplification and distortion of natural forms had a profound influence on many Indonesian artists. His magic decorative style is a personal visual language mostly derived from folk motifs. He focuses on inner structure rather that outward appearance. The re-petition of basic elements are order with an underlying rhythm to create movement. The artist’s works encompass all of his varied experiences as soldier, student, teacher, and religious family man. Flora and fauna, religion and mythology, masks and portraits, and daily life all are parts of his fantasy world.

Internationally celebrated Painter and Sculptor, Teguh Ostenrik holds a Master Degree in Fine Arts Hochschule der Kuenste, West Berlin , Germany. He has had more than one hundred solo and group exhibitions in the USA , Europe (France, the Netherlands, Germany),Australia and throughout Asia . His art works and commissioned projects are collected by many private collectors, museums, international institutions and major corporations. To name a few are Willem de Kooning Studio – USA, St.Mary of the Angels Church – Singapore, Fukuoka Art Museum – Japan. Among many noteworthy recognitions, Ostenrik was awarded The Best Artist 2009 in Visual Arts Category by Tempo Magazine and the Top Ten Philip Morris Art Award in 1997. Most of Ostenrik’s works were created based on his respect to environment. He used lots of recycle material and mother earth colors. He believes that having himself raised in Indonesian culture, graduated from Hochschulle der Künste West Berlin, Germany and later resided in Europa for 16 years , has created a two sided insights in his works. The Indonesian and European culture has merged in him and subconsciously shaped his artistic statement. Recently , he initiated ARTificial Reef Park Project which was launched in Lombok, Indonesia, a project to restore the nature through art. Using biorocks technology, Ostenrik provides his underwater sculptures as media for the coral to grow and providing a better marine ecosystem. Ostenrik’s 24 years work of art has been documented in Transcending Time,a full coloured 250 pages book, wrote by Art Historian Barbara Asboth. He was a guest lecturer in the Beijing Central Academy of Art in 2006. For three consecutive years (2006-2008) Teguh is a jury member of China Asean Youth Art Creativity Contest in Nanning – China, a drawing competition with 3000 participants. In 2013, he represented Indonesia to commemorate 10th Anniversary of China-Asean Expo. Affandi Affandi’s paintings dominated with a strong and distinctive character build in humanistic point of view. The theme of his paintings always forwarded the humanity aspects of many events. He was a very intuitive and emotional painter, and his works were heartfelt expressions. He only painted what he observed and never approached his works from any kind of philosophical or analytical starting point. His significant and distinguished works from Affandi was his strong lines, expressive gestural scribbles and spontaneous. He did not ornament figures, the lines were produced by his technique squeezing the paint directly from the tube onto the canvas, using his fingers and palms to direct the medium over its surface and never mixed his colours. He approached paint as a medium in the same way that he did for pencil and charcoal, subduing the subtle modalities of colour to the movement of the hand and the creation of line. Affandi’s interest in humanity made him learned a lot about the anatomy of human body in the beginning of his career. Affandi often painted his self portrait with people in his inner circle. He painted among others his families, his friends, his collectors, his house and his favourite objects like his pipe. Affandi felt he no longer had to fill up the whole canvas, so there are many “empty” spaces in his painting. Yet this is not because he was unable to fill the space, he realizes the quality of this emptiness and makes it a part of painting’s structure.

He continued to study art in London at the Chelsea School of Art and the Hammersmith College of Art & Architecture. He had exhibited over 100 shows in Singapore and aboard including Australia, Austria, Cambodia, China, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States and Vietnam. Thomas won many awards including the First Prize in SIA Mural Competition, Singapore (1971), Cultural Medallion Award winner in 1984 (presented by the Government of Singapore), UOB Painting of the Year Competition (1983/84), Heineken International Art Award, Amsterdam (1991) and Pingat APAD (Angkatan Pelukis Aneka Daya) for his dedication and creative contribution to the development of visual art in Singapore (1995). His works are among the collections of local / overseas institutions and private corporations. He represents one of Singapore's second-generation artists who studied in the West. His work became infused with Western ideas, though at the same time he never completely abandoned the images and impressions of Asia, and these featured prominently in his work. Yeo has been described as one of - if not the first - Singaporean abstract artist, and abstraction has been an abiding feature of his work since the 1960s.

Putu Sutawijaya Putu’s works have been nominated many awards such as one of the 10 best paintings of Philip Morris Art Award in 1999 and granted the Lempad Prize from Sanggar Dewata Indonesia in 2000. He has been performing Solo exhibitions in Bali, Yogyakarta, Jakarta Singapore, Hongkong, Malaysia and America. Various motions and human behavior are the theme he likes most in his paintings. His spontaneous and firm lines expressed his dynamic works using minimal color. Putu’s figures are painted with rhythmic motion and minimal color, and are characterized by his strong lines and brush strokes. Androgynous human figures are represented in motion – dancing, flying, floating – or otherwise completely still in a pose of serene contemplation. His art is, above all, about the individual human condition in a struggle to free itself from the constraints of an overly complex world.

Locatelli was born 1905 in Italy. His father, Luigi was also an artist. Having graduated from Carrara Art Academy in Bergamo, Italy , Locatelli was regarded a very successful artists, counting powerful personages such the Pope and Mussolini among his patrons. He was famous for his work in Italian portraiture. In 1938, he visited Indonesia, staged an exhibition in Bandung and drew much artistic inspiration during his stay in Bali. With the onset of WW2, he cut short his sojourn in Bali and left for Manila where tragically most of his works were destroyed during a fire. Locatelli vanished without a trace in Manila in 1943. Dr Earl Lu Ming-Teh (b.15 Sep1925, Hong Kong – d. 2 Sep 2005, Pisa, Italy), was considered one of Singapore’s most prominent art patrons and philanthropists. A medical surgeon by profession, he was a keen art collector and served on several institutional boards to help promote visual arts and art education in Singapore. An artist in his own right, he is known for his paintings of roses. Dr Earl Lu was a prominent student as well as a good friend of the late renowned Singaporean pioneer artist Chen Wen Hsi. M. Irfan M. Irfan was born in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra 1972. M. Irfan is included in 51 members of the young artists from West Sumatra that recently held a group exhibition under the theme of Panorama. Irfan’s paintings of train series have captivated the people’s interest. He mostly painted in huge size. They portray trains, railways, and fumes which give a sense of darkness. His “trains” series was quite a leap in Irfan’s painting career. They contained Irfan’s dreams, hopes and ideas. M. Irfan is widely known as prospective painters in Indonesian art world. He was one of the member or Jendela Group, a group of painters from Minang, West Sumatra. Basically Irfan is an artist that does not like to involve himself in great or political issues. He feels that they are simply beyond his capacity and interests. M. Irfan has left the use of objects within his works. His canvases rely on lifting lines in a kind of unfolding imaginary. Arie Smit Arie Smit was a student of the Academy of Arts in Rotterdam before working as lithographer for the Dutch Colonial Army in the Dutch Indies prior to the Second World War. Arie Smit came to Indonesia in 1950s and to Bali in 1956. In Bali he moved one place to another, including Denpasar, Ubud and Buleleng, in his pursuit of natural beauty of Bali which he poured it all in his paintings. Arie Smit moved to Bali in 1956 to engage in full time painting and became an Indonesian Citizen, produced as well as taught painting at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Many of his paintings depict the nature of his surrounding environment. He had several solo exhibitions in Bandung Institute of Technology, The Honolulu East West Center, and the Center of Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta. He received the “Dharma Kusuma” art awards from the local government of Bali. Since his arrival in Bali, his artistic career has spans over fifty years. Smit has sought to capture and thereby celebrate the tropical beauty and wonder of his adopted home. Smit’s style has evolved from the poetic realism of his earlier works where he sought to create “a dream-like state of mind” to a more abstract representation of reality, sparing the details but without compromising his viewer’s engagement. Arie Smit’s painting show breathtaking landscapes, relaxing youths, colourful tropical gardens, glittering seascapes, and quiet temples that evoke a sense of wander. Nature provides Arie Smit with a tremendous amount of energy that serves as the driving force for his exploration. In his works, Arie portraits his deep admiration for the beauty of Bali, its mountains, palm trees, rice terraces, the life of the farmers and particularly, the local spiritual life. Life on the island is perpetual rich with rituals.

Mark Kaplan is a modern neo-impressionist, characterized by his energy. Mark’s ebullient style and fauvist palette fashioned him the “sun painter”. He once lived in Bali from 1938 – 1944 together with his wife, Hofker-Reuter. His works were undoubted. His color, texture surface, and contrastive control showed his maturity of painting study. His drawing was elegant and poetic. His works were inspired by the lifestyle of Balinese people which often depict them in festive ceremonial dress. He died in 1981.
