Chen Wen Hsi Born in Baigong, Caozhu, 1906. Chen Wen Hsi studied art at the Hsin Hwa Art Academy in Shanghai. He became a lecturer at the Nangyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore. His paintings were strongly influenced by Chan (Zen) and the unorthodox Qing School of Yangzhou. He actively participated in several exhibitions outside Singapore which also incidentally promote Singapore. Among the many awards he had received are the Public Service Star in 1964, a Gold Medal by the National Museum of History, Taiwan in 1980, the first recipient of the ASEAN Cultural and Communication Award for outstanding artists in 1987 and received an honorary doctorate from the National University of Singapore. Chen Wen Hsi is Singapore’s foremost painter that combines Chinese and Western techniques in his semi abstract work. Chen Wen-hsi is renowned for his skill in painting animal themes. Chicken, gibbons, herons, carps and squirrels are some of his favourite subjects. Numerous solo and group exhibitions were held in Singapore and around the world. Wen Hsi’s artistic excellence was recognized. Wen Hsi’s constant eagerness to strike for something new led him to learn finger painting – a technique that dates from the Tang Dynasty. This drawing style has enabled him to produce unpredictable broken stroke on paper. He developed his skill in finger painting, inkand-brush, oil, sketches, abstracts and semi-abstract techniques. Every subject he paints, whether lotuses, gibbons, egrets, monkeys, squirrels, birds, or flowers and trees, is palpably vibrant.

Adrien Jean Le Mayeur De Merpres Born in Brussels (Belgium), on 9 February 1880, in the nobility and linked with the Belgium royal family, he was the son of a painter. Adrien was very keen on becoming a painter himself, but his father insisted that he should complete his studies first. He graduated as a civil engineer (architect), but soon after devoted himself to painting. Le Mayeur’s works were executed with free-flowing and bold, strong strokes, in bright and gay colours. When his first visit to Bali, he was deeply impressed by the temple rituals and dances, and by a girl called Ni Pollok, a legong dancer, in particular. Balinese culture, nature and Ni Pollok had startled him of the strong magic of Bali and totally changed his vision about life. In 1933, Ni Pollok had turned 16 and was too old to dance the legong, so she agreed to be Le Mayeur’s model. It was a local tradition that a legong dancer is at her best only between 12 through 17 years. She became the main theme of his paintings and in 1935, when she was 18, they married in a traditional Balinese ceremony. His works, be they sketches done in light colours or bright-coloured oil paints, showed that they were inspired by the brilliant and clear tropical sunlight. His brightly-clad, energetic and graceful dancers, dancing to the beat of the drums and bells, or his women, kneeling beside the loom weaving sarong cloth, fully demonstrated the tranquil and fine life of the Balinese. He captured the daily life of people he personally observed around his surroundings and poured them into canvas in stunning expression.

Widayat Born in Kutoarjo, Central Java 3 March 1919 and died in 2002. Besides a painter, Widayat was also known as the lecturer of the Indonesian Institute of Fine Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta. Since 1950-2002 he had participated in numerous painting exhibitions in Indonesia as well as abroad, such as Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Hongkong, Netherlands, Italy, America and Australia. Widayat was said as a maestro after Affandi as published in the book of “Educator and painter” by ISI Yogyakarta 1988. He was also a revolutionary painter, master of gardening and a graphics art. Widayat was the first artist whose exhibition was largely exposed in the Singapore Art Museum, one of the most important museums in Southeast Asia on September 2007 (held in two months). According to Prof. Soedarso Sp MA, Widayat’s artistic works can be levelled with the works of Henri Rousseau (a France surrealist artist) who has been his great orientation. Widayat paints freely, unburdened by anything except that he always attempts at infusing contents, giving significance to his imaginary space by means of symbols and indications. Watching Widayat’s works, we are taken to archaic natures and to the daily life, without perspective, and without criticize for something. We may remark them as beautiful and alluring, crowding our retinas, innocently accepting reality, fascinatingly interpretable, and mystically thrilling the space.

I Nyoman Meja I Nyoman Meja was born in Banjar Taman, Ubud 1952. He is among the most successful 1980s painters in Ubud. His works are dedicated in bold colors featuring anatomically correct figures. Hence his paintings show a fascinating assimilation of traditionalism and modernism. The traditionalist of Meja’s works is signified by his technique which still uses penelak and the illustration of his setting (houses, field, paddy fields) that strongly referred to Ubud style. While his modernity is describe with the lighting rationalization over its painting’s objects therefore Meja’s pieces can be categorized as post-traditional ones. Meja was born in Taman, Ubud, 1952. He learned painting from I Nyoman Sinom and I Wayan Serati. During 1970s, he met Rudolf Bonnet. Through this meeting, his modern vision developed. His paintings depict various themes. Composition of masks once occupied his style. But is 1980s, he started to paint the world of children and his reputation soon enhanced. Children black-and-white-checkered cloth (Poleng) are illustrated in various scenes, such as variety of parades, cockfighting, and kecak performance. Meja’s paintings are collected by famous Museums in Bali. He has several talented pupils. Among them are I Wayan Matra, I Wayan Sukadana, I Made Artawa and I Wayan Asta. His painting once entered the national art competition, Indonesia Philip Morris Art Awards, as a finalist in 1997 and the winner of Indofood Art Awards 2002.

His pictural, ceramic and engraved works are joously spreading in Europe, USA, Canada and Japan where his shows are great successes.

Han Snel Born in 1925 in Scheveningen, Holland, Han Snel arrived in Indonesia as a Dutch soldier in 1946. He had a life-long love affair with Bali, became an Indonesian citizen and lived in Ubud from 1950 until his death in 1998. Balinese themes are Han Snel’s specialism, in particular figures done in a more or expressionist style: he himself prefers to describe his manner with its very conspicuous, curved lines, as ‘roundism’. In his works, Snel focused his attention on the beauty of Balinese women. His colors were varied and lean towards the primary with contrasting area of dark shading. The graphic paintings featured stylized and somewhat elongated women in rich, sensuous colors. His visual imageries, subdued colors and fine lines captured the essence of Ubud and the island as a place where serenity reigned and simple people led an honest life.

Srihadi Soedarsono The merging of spiritual and physical control obtained in dance obviously appeals to the philosophical Srihadi. Some of his figurative paintings, especially the dancers, look deceptively similar, and that the figures have become stereotypes, but one should try to appreciate and study the details and minimal variations. Srihadi pays particular attention to the characteristic of the dancer and the artistic form of the dance. Every dance has its language or vocabulary of movement and type of costume, all of which imbued with philosophical meaning. Srihadi gives us many variants in this new approach to the depiction of the dance. When he first started to focus on the idea of movement, he did so by paying with the parallelism of gestures and by emphasizing the realistic aspect of the dancer’s bodies. Color was then relatively secondary. By the early 1990’s rhythm had taken a life of its own, as shown by the vibrant dynamism of the dancer. In painting the present lot, the dancers’ eyes remain transfixed even as their body movements are transformed into a feast of glittering color. Even so, and however much the costumes of the dancers drift rhythmically over the canvas surface, it is in fact the artist’s working of this background that embodies the idea of movement. In dance paintings from the mid – 1980s onwards, Srihadi has explored other aspects of the inner nature of movement besides those of immobility and diffused dynamism. Some lie midway between these two tendencies. He has explored composed movement, such as that practiced in the traditional dance of the Javanese palaces, in particular the Bedoyo Ketawang, which is considered to be the epitome of Javanese refinement. In the paintings on this theme, the fuzzy atmosphere shrouding the figures is gone; rather, the head and limbs are suspended, almost immobile, and drawn with an extreme delicacy, otherwise found only in the artist’s work depicting wayang puppets. Only the cloth moves, slowly drifting along the ground, merging dark violet into black. There is a visual rhythm set up by the inert head and limbs, the color of the headdress, and the casual placement of the hanging white garlands.

Chen Wen Hsi A prolific painter who worked in a range of styles, Chen Wen Hsi won acclaim for combining Western art with Chinese brush strokes in his paintings. He was also an influential art teacher at The Chinese High School and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) for many years. From a young age, Chen was interested in the small animals that he saw in his village and around his home. For example, he enjoyed watching sparrows in the courtyard as well as the chickens, ducks and geese reared by his family. Contact with these small animals at an early age instilled in him a great love for pets and animals. To observe the characteristics and movements of the animals he painted, Chen bought and reared gibbons, fish, birds, squirrels, egrets and peacocks. He was said to have a “miniature zoo” in his backyard. Chen painted both Western and Chinese paintings. His Western-style works in the early 1950s were realistic depictions infused with post-impressionistic and expressionistic elements. Chen’s Western painting style subsequently evolved, moving from simplified forms and strong colours to cubism, and later abstraction. Besides using oil paints for his Western artworks, Chen also experimented with acrylic and viscous paints as well as sand on canvas.

Affandi Born in Cirebon, March 11, 1907. Affandi was considered as the Indonesian Artist par excellent. He was the founder of the Himpunan Pelukis Masyarakat (Community’s Artists Association (1946) and Himpunan Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Artists Association) in 1947, Affandi was committed to creating a new artistic idiom for Indonesia. In the early of 1950s he traveled to India for a grant from Indian Government, he held several one-man shows in several Indian Cities, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Italy. He received an Indonesian Art Award from the Ministry of Education and Culture (1969), the Dag Hammerskjoeld Prize from Italy (1977) and an Indonesian Government the First Class Merit (1978). His works were exhibited in major exhibitions in Asia, Europe, and the Americas and were also be acquired by major art collectors and institutions all over the world since the 1950s. Affandi’s work exhibits a distinct rhythm full of emotional intensity by squeezing paint directly onto the canvas. The expressionist painter characteristically has an urgency to simultaneously grab the movement of the moment he wants to describe, along with capturing the textures of the object, a drive that often leads him to work much more passionately compared to the naturalists, the realists, or even the impressionists. He directly expressed his pure emotion in the form of strong wild lines dominated with black hues. Affandi’s strokes expressed his wild, vicious, and discontentment towards the fixed form of expression. He always paints in simultaneous movement and never tied with certain kind of forms. There are several themes that captured his interest in paintings; but mostly described the activity of the people in his surroundings. Sometimes they combined with mountain landscape in the background with the sun object. All of the objects were drawn as the results from Affandi’s experience in travelling to places he often visited. He observed the object and directly put into canvases using his wild fingers and rough strokes.

Hendra Gunawan Hendra Gunawan painted some of his surreal, lively, and emotional work during his imprisonment at Kebun Waru in Bandung from 1965 to 1978. His works captured the life of common people while also conveying a unique, expressionistic, and deeply personal vision of the reality he experienced. His paintings become highly original, modern, simple, and totally Indonesian with its expressions by observing Java’s grand landscapes and natural history. Hendra’s work may thus be seen as illustration of a new mythology. The stylized figures, landscapes features and the decorative approach to color are perhaps influenced by Javanese illustration and design. The underwater world is likely one of the most astonishing and fascinating of Hendra’s works in realistic painting. The subject seems apparently to be a conflict with the artist’s style, themes, and artistic concerns. This painting, Ikan Laut, was painted in 1973, and reflects one of Hendra’s favorite subjects of rich seas. Hendra has clearly created a scheme of expressionistic colors based on the actual hues of the ocean. The link between his distinctive palette and aquatic colors become even more apparent. He used brilliant colors for the ocean textures and character of the fishes.

Chen Wen Hsi 陈文希 Born in Baigong, from the province of Guangdong, Chen Wen Hsi studied art at the Xinhua College of Art in Shanghai where he was thought by renowned artists such as Pan Tianshou. After moving to Singapore in 1948, Chen Wen Hsi proceeded to teach at the Chinese High School (1914-1968) and then the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (1951-1959). As an artist, Chen Wen Hsi actively participated in several exhibitions outside Singapore which incidentally promoted Singapore. Among the many awards he has received are the Public Service Star (1964), a Gold Medal by the National Museum of History, Taiwan (1980), the first recipient of the ASEAN Cultural and Communication Award for outstanding artists (1987), and an honorary doctorate from the National University of Singapore. Chen Wen Hsi is Singapore’s pioneer artist that combines Chinese and Western techniques in his semi abstract work. His constant eagerness to strive for something new led him to learn finger painting, a technique that dates back from the Tang Dynasty. This drawing style has enabled him to produce unpredictable broken strokes on paper. Chen Wen Hsi is renowned for his skills in depicting animals, of which it is the gibbons that he is most associated with. It is Chen Wen Hsi’s mastery of the gibbons that led it to be commemorated on the 50 Singapore Dollars note.

Hendra Gunawan Hendra Gunawan created paintings conveying his great feelings and deepest emotions for his country and people. He inspired his paintings with sympathy, compassion, and affection about common people. He took the daily lives of people subjects for his paintings. He explored their everyday lives, capturing them movingly on canvas in his inimitable style. Portrays of women figures, sellers or mother and child were on old theme that constantly revisited throughout the artist’s career. Hendra women are types, not clearly distinguishable individuals, and they are nourishing, nursing, mothering beauties, voluptuous and undulating bodies wrapped in brightly colored cloth. He used exaggerated profiles, with long necks, protruding noses, and large eyes, echoes the stylization of human form found in wayang. He used the natural painting such as mountain and beach as background to his main subject, like illustrated this present lot. Hendra’s stylistic figures and landscapes are perhaps influenced by his deep knowledge of rich signs and symbols of Javanese culture. Java’s monumental landscapes illustrated in decorative approach of color are also relates to the deeper level of traditional artistic expression in Indonesia. 098 HENDRA GUNAWAN (Bandung, 1918 – 1983) Two Women After Washing Oil on canvas: 115 x 53 cm Signed, lower right: Hendra Provenance: Private Collection, Prominent Collector Jakarta SGD 75,000 - 90,000 USD 55,880 - 67,050

Malaysiaborn, Singapore based, Chan is one of Southeast Asia’s notable contemporary painters. Chan has held exhibitions in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, UAE, Hong Kong and Australia. He has taken up art residencies and won several awards including the Philip Morris Juror’s Choice Awards in 2002. Popo Iskandar graduated from the University of Indonesian and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Popo Iskandar started painting in 1944, and is known not just as an artist, but an art observer and writer as well. Popo Iskandar has participated in many international exhibitions and in 1980, he was received an award from the Indonesian government for his contribution to arts. Another distinctly unique subject of Popo Iskandar’s paintings besides his rendition of the feline, are that of his roosters. Popo began the study of this subject in 1974 and observed that the rooster experienced several steps of expression, much the same as the five steps for the cat. Popo was inspired by the rooster as it was an object close to his surroundings and often overlooked by many. For Popo’s depiction of the rooster, he looked to another traditional Indonesian culture, Wayang Kulit, or shadow play. The artistic qualities of Wayang Kulit enabled Popo’s roosters to reflect a special artistic and esthetic manifestation as the rooster prepares to take off and dart out of the way. Popo’s use of minimal colours is not due to the lack of tools or materials, but rather his concept reflecting his intellectuality and mastery of the subject matter. MASTERPIECE FINE ART - SINGAPORE

Srihadi Soedarsono Srihadi is an artist with a deep cultural background. His integrity as a creative artist was formed through his formal education as well as through his life experiences. There are two important aspects in Srihadi’s paintings: first, the artistic value of color composition, and second, the philosophical value that reflects the meaning of life, cultural, and social value. The dancing figures in Srihadi’s painting were characterized with the use of other elements such as mask, fan, mirror, offerings or flowers. In the present lot the figure was posing in elegant style holding a fan in front of her chest. The way she looked directed us to a stage of waiting for something or perhaps just a symbolical meaning of her own self contemplation.

A.D. Pirous was born in Meulaboh, Aceh on 11 March 1932. He was the fifth of six children in a relatively well-to do family. He went to school in Meulaboh’s elite, Dutch-run elementary school while also receiving religious instruction on reciting the Koran and writing Arabic. In 1950, at the age of 18, Pirous left Aceh for the North Sumatran city of Medan to continue his studies at that city’s first-rate middle schools and high schools. He did well in school and art was what he did best. His middle-school art teacher urged him to consider art school. But it was the exhibition of modernist painters like Zaini, Handrio, Nashar, Widayat and Sudjojono who came from Jakarta and Yogyakarta that spurred his desire to pursue art education. AD Pirous, better known simply as Pak Pirous, was sent to New York in 1969 to study Visual Design at the Rochester University. There he visited as many museums and art venues as possible. Then, at the Met (Metropolitan Museum of Art) in New York, he was struck by the beauty of calligraphy in works from the Middle East. It took him back to his childhood in Meulaboh, Aceh, where Arabic calligraphy abounded. There and then, he knew he had found his identity, and his destiny. Returning to Indonesia, Pak Pirous threw himself into calligraphy, which made up much of his artistic output in addition to his figurative and abstract works. From then on Pirous’s art focus was on Arabic calligraphy and considered as a pioneer of Islamic painting in Indonesia. MASTERPIECE FINE ART - SINGAPORE

Alit Sembodo Alit Sembodo was born in Magelang, Central Java, 10th August 1973. He took his formal school at the Indonesian Institute of Fine Arts, Yogyakarta where he won the Patisara Affandi Adi Karya Awards in 1999. Alit’s paintings have shown the tendency to become a media for social commentary. He does not purely make social criticism of the wisdom or practices of the ruling politics. He only goes as far as demonstrating the problems of society through the language of his paintings, according to his own perceptive and perception. Most of his works demonstrate strong characteristics, narrative and descriptive crowd in all kinds of poses and scenes that filled every corner of the canvas. He never left the canvas empty. The canvas seems full with parade of masses like a colossal theater performance. Perhaps this has become Alit’s concern towards all kinds of social problems amongst the populace. He seems does not merely make social criticism towards the ruling politics, but he only goes to describe the condition in his painting through his own perspective and perception. Raduan Man graduated with Bachelors of Design Fine Arts from the University Technology Mara (UiTM) in 2000 before going on to obtain a Bachelor’s of fine arts (print making) with honours from MaRa. In 2002 Raduan was awarded the Pahang State foundation Scholarship for his and Masters in fineart(painting)from the University of Wolverhampton, UK and in2007 was once again the recipient of the state scholarship for his Masters in fine art (printmaking) from the Camberwell School of art, UK. Raduan Man laboriously incorporates both art disciplines for his works by intricately carving out wood blocks and transposing the images on to canvas. The use of canvas as oppose to paper gives Raduan a sturdier material to work with, enabling him the room for experimentation to form the artistic statement which has shaped him today. Layers of blocks are imprinted, with each block contributing its unique characteristic which gives depth and complexities to Raduan’s work. Raduan has participated in over 30 group exhibitions and has held 7 solo exhibitions including fresh Markings, NN Gallery, Kuala Lumpur (2003), Beyond Print – Raduan Man, Gallery Chandan, Kuala Lumpur (2009), and Living Metals, Purple houz fine arts, Petaling Jaya (2012). Awiki Awiki’s paintings of realism have special character in form, color, and composition with “rembrandt lighting” approach. Due to his eye illness he was no longer using the style. Creatively he produced painting method called “mata baur - combined eyes”. Since then he creates impressionist painting of thick paint texture. Nevertheless this kind of painting gained special response from public. Awiki’s paintings include themes such as flowers, dancers, houses, trees, as well as still life. His paintings were inspired with his surroundings that described people’s daily lives and tradition. Awiki works with a purity of purpose and a mastery of technique that set his art beyond the constraints of time or place. Engaged in a direct impressionistic encounter with the dynamics of light, Awiki approaches his work with great physical courage, often enduring the ferocity of the tropical sun in order to complete a painting. It is amazing to watch Awiki paint, with a brush hardened to function like a palette-knife, he works very fast with great conviction.

In mid1995, he borrowed the artistic mode of the German Anselm Keifer and the British Francis Bacon. Later, he tried to develop his own style starting to study with his own body and face in various poses and expression in realistic rendering as his means to convey socio-cultural issues in cynical, ironical and parody atmospheres. Suwage’s artistic explorations have as the basic photographic images that he develops with his sensitiveness and manual skills in drawing, adding support from digital manipulation, to produce images. His works illustrate how the constructed image of Western avant-garde art has been inspirational, through “museum without walls”, to the culture of the world’s modern art. Suwage’s mode of appropriation is by borrowing iconic imageries as his reference, to serve the metaphors for values actively working between love and hate, amazement and derision at once, in parodying, and so on. 156 AGUS SUWAGE (Purworejo, 1959) Artist’s Plant, 2002 Acrylic on canvas: 150 x 145 cm Signed and dated, lower left: Agus Suwage, 2002 SGD 45,000 - 60,000 USD 33,530 - 44,700

Born in Baigong, from the province of Guangdong, Chen Wen Hsi studied art at the Xinhua College of Art in Shanghai where he was thought by renowned artists such as Pan Tianshou. 160
