Gerard Pieter Adolfs (born 2 January 1898 in Semarang, Central-Java; died 1 February 1968 in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands) was a Dutch East Indies painter and architect. In the 1930s – at the height of his artistic career – the press called G.P. Adolfs the “Wizard of Light”

Born in Zaandam, the Netherlands, 1916. He was a student of the Academy of Arts in Rotterdam before working as lithographer for the Dutch Colonial Army in the Dutch Indies prior to the Second World War. He moved to Bali in 1956 to engage in full time painting and became an Indonesian Citizen, produced as well as taught painting at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Many of his paintings depict the nature of his surrounding environment. He had several solo exhibitions in Bandung Institute of Technology, The Honolulu East West Center, and the Center of Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta. He received the “Dharma Kusuma” art awards from the local government of Bali.

Chen Wen Hsi Born in Baigong, from the province of Guangdong, Chen Wen Hsi studied art at the Xinhua College of Art in Shanghai where he was thought by renowned artists such as Pan Tianshou. After moving to Singapore in 1948, Chen Wen Hsi proceeded to teach at the Chinese High School (1914-1968) and then the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (1951-1959). As an artist, Chen Wen Hsi actively participated in several exhibitions outside Singapore which incidentally promoted Singapore. Among the many awards he has received are the Public Service Star (1964), a Gold Medal by the National Museum of History, Taiwan (1980), the first recipient of the ASEAN Cultural and Communication Award for outstanding artists (1987), and an honorary doctorate from the National University of Singapore. Chen Wen Hsi is Singapore’s pioneer artist that combines Chinese and Western techniques in his semi abstract work. His constant eagerness to strive for something new led him to learn finger painting, a technique that dates back from the Tang Dynasty. This drawing style has enabled him to produce unpredictable broken strokes on paper. Chen Wen Hsi is renowned for his skills in depicting animals, of which it is the gibbons that he is most associated with. It is Chen Wen Hsi’s mastery of the gibbons that led it to be commemorated on the 50 Singapore Dollars note.

Born in Palembang, South Sumatra, 1904. He was a self-taught painter whose works were mostly Indonesian landscape. He also produced paintings of Asian panorama. He was a painter, watercolorist, and draughtsman in the style reminiscent of the late of GP. Adolfs. He once lived in Jakarta for a long time then settled in The Hague until he died in 1976.

Arie Smit Born in Zaandam, the Netherlands, 1916. Arie Smit was a student of the Academy of Arts in Rotterdam before working as lithographer for the Dutch Colonial Army in the Dutch Indies prior to the Second World War. He moved to Bali in 1956 to engage in full time painting and became an Indonesian Citizen, produced as well as taught painting at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Many of his paintings depict the nature of his surrounding environment. He had several solo exhibitions in Bandung Institute of Technology, The Honolulu East West Center, and the Center of Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta. He received the “Dharma Kusuma” art awards from the local government of Bali. Hindu temples and shrines are integral to Bali life and as such are a common theme in Smit’s work. It is typical of his work as it depicts community life in rural Bali, his most favoured subject matter. Facades of temple are often shown with human figures in front of them. Arie Smit uses a simple single vanishing point perspective to depict the temple surrounding. His special characteristics were seen by the use of his tropical rich colour on the object.

Born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 1892. He studied arts and craft in Amsterdam for three years. He once worked as administration staff for Sumatra Plantation Company in 1913. He first visited Bali in 1918 then traveled extensively throughout the island to paint. He also went to Europe as well as remote areas in Asia and North Africa. Most of his works were absorbed from the local cultures that enabled him to paint unusually intimate portraits. He died in his homeland, Amsterdam, 1980.

Han Snel Born in 1925 in Scheveningen, Holland, Han Snel arrived in Indonesia as a Dutch soldier in 1946. He had a life-long love affair with Bali. Snel immediately fell in love with the island; a love so deep until he marred a local girl, apply for Indonesia citizenship and embrace Balinese Hinduism. He lived in Ubud from 1950 until his death in 1998. Balinese themes are Han Snel’s specialism, in particular figures done in a more or expressionist style: he himself prefers to describe his manner with its very conspicuous, curved lines, as ‘roundism’. In his works, Snel focused his attention on the beauty of Balinese women. His colors were varied and lean towards the primary with contrasting area of dark shading. His visual imageries, subdued colors and fine lines captured the essence of Ubud and the island as a place where serenity reigned and simple people led an honest life.

In 1946 he started painting under the painter S. Sudjojono in Sanggar Indonesia Muda (Young Indonesian Artists Association), Madiun. In 1950s he used naturalistic style which afterwards changed to impressionistic. He actively participated in several exhibitions in Indonesia and abroad. He lived in Surabaya and died in the year of 1990.

Born in Solo, 1938. He studied at the Himpunan Budaya Surakarta (HBS – Surakarta Cultural Society) (1953 – 1955) and at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) (1960 – 1966). In 1978, He established Studio Seni Rupa Bandung (Bandung Fine Arts Studio) together with Dr. Sudjoko. He has participated in several exhibitions. He held his solo exhibitions at Bandung (1998), Galerie Darga & Lansberg, Paris France (1999), Darga Gallery, Bali (2000), the Jakarta Hilton International Hotel, Jakarta and Nadi Gallery, Jakarta (2002). He combines Eastern mysticism with Western analytical sense that made his portraits paintings are very distinctive and well known.

Koeboe Sarawan Born in Malang, June 29, 1961. He graduated from Indonesian Academy of Arts in Yogyakarta in 1985. Koeboe Sarawan spent his younger years learning Batik then he started to paint. Koeboe Sarawanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great asset is his magnificent talent to portray visual reality in detail and realistic manner. He seriously capture the detail form but once he act humorously and critical. His works are represented in more attractive was a way with the exact choices of object. The themes revealed in his paintings were a projection of honesty that attracts viewers to learn more about the painterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goal through his works. His works are mostly categorized as surrealistic though actually they are more realistic in symbolic way. His ideas are still dominated by his surroundings which represent his social experiences. The painting looks as if it was 3 dimensional, utilizing excellent realism techniques, so every details and perspective of the work seem very realistic. Koeboe is an artist that has his own characteristic. His paintings give a surrealist and mysticism feel with metaphor language through philosophical reflection of finesse technique. In painting the present lot Koeboe try to present the Budha figure that symbolizes peace and harmony. His emotional bond towards his grand mother is also one of the influences in shaping his mindset. Koeboe believes that originality in this world does not exist, because originality only belongs to God.

Dullah was born in Solo, 1919. He studied painting under Affandi and Sudjojono but has his own distinctive style of naturalism. He was well known for his landscape and portraits paintings. He was one of the founders of HBS – Surakarta Cultural Community (1950). In 1956, he edited book of former Presiden Soekarno’s Private Collection of Indonesian Art (volume I & II). Since the early days of the independence, Dullah was very close to Soekarno, the first President of the Republic of Indonesia and was appointed by Soekarno to care for the President’s private art collection and as curator of the state painting collections. At age 70, Dullah built his museum, now a cultural landmark, as his dedication to a love of the arts over a creative lifetime. He has had numerous art exhibitions in Indonesia and overseas and in 1988 his work was included in the Art of Bali exhibition held at the East West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Now, his works been kept in Dullah Museum in Solo. He died in 1996.

Born in St. Jansteen, The Netherlands, 1882. In 1908, he visited Indonesia, where he lived and worked as a painter and drawing teacher at secondary school. From 1920 - 1925, he participated in several exhibitions organized by the Bataviasche Kunstkring in Jakarta. He returned to The Netherlands and stayed there since 1928 - 1935, and then came to Indonesia again afterward. He finally settled in his home town around 1946 until he died in 1967. Gerard Adolfs was born in Semarang, a city on the north coast of Java, Indonesia. His father, Gerardus Cornelius Adolfs was an amateur painter, photographer and musician. Adolfs studied architecture in Holland and designed several houses before returning to Indonesia in 1922. In 1924 he held his first exhibition, which included etchings and drawings of Javanese scenes. He then traveled to Florence, Rome, Vienna and Prague. In Paris he befriended the artist Foujita, and continued to exhibit in Java, Japan, Singapore and even San Francisco. Adolfs specialized in scenes of life based on his travels in Java, Bali and Japan, and often painted market scenes as well as townscapes and landscapes. His best works feature confident, quick brushwork and elegant palette-knife technique. Adolfs returned to Holland in 1940, just before the occupation of the Netherlands by Germany. A number of his paintings were lost when the ship “Simaloer” was torpedoed. More paintings were destroyed in the bombing of Nijmegen in 1944. Despite these losses, Adolfs continued working and also wrote a book about Soerabaja, the capital of East Java. During his later years Adolfs lived mainly in Amsterdam, but also in Scandinavia, France, Spain, Italy and North Africa. Gerard Adolfs died in the village of s’Hertogenbosch, Holland, In February of 1968.

Widayat Born in Kutoarjo, Central Java 3 March 1919 and died in 2002. Besides a painter, Widayat was also known as the lecturer of the Indonesian Institute of Fine Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta. Since 1950-2002 he had participated in numerous painting exhibitions in Indonesia as well as abroad, such as Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Hongkong, Netherlands, Italy, America and Australia. Widayat was said as a maestro after Affandi as published in the book of “Educator and painter” by ISI Yogyakarta 1988. He was also a revolutionary painter, master of gardening and a graphics art. Widayat was the first artist whose exhibition was largely exposed in the Singapore Art Museum, one of the most important museums in Southeast Asia on September 2007 (held in two months). According to Prof. Soedarso Sp MA, Widayat’s artistic works can be levelled with the works of Henri Rousseau (a France surrealist artist) who has been his great orientation. Widayat paints freely, unburdened by anything except that he always attempts at infusing contents, giving significance to his imaginary space by means of symbols and indications. Watching Widayat’s works, we are taken to archaic natures and to the daily life, without perspective, and without criticize for something. We may remark them as beautiful and alluring, crowding our retinas, innocently accepting reality, fascinatingly interpretable, and mystically thrilling the space.

Ahmad Zakiiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s love for art began at the age of 6. After completing his formal education at Mara Institute of Technology (UiTM), Zakii began his career as a graphic artist, producing some of the leading advertising graphics of his time. Zakii came to attention for his reputation for stunning photo-realist still-lift paintings and expressive portraits, and his virtuosity and command of a spectrum of media from charcoals to oils. Zakii has held numerous solo exhibitions both locally and internationally. Born in Padangtegal, Ubud, 1921. During his teens, he became influences by the Dutch painter Dutch painter Rudolf Bonnet (1895-1978). He was a member of Pita Maha organization. His works was included in the ‘Art of Bali’ exhibition held in 1988 at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. His works are in the collections of Art Center in Denpasar, the Puri Lukisan Museum in Ubud, the Rijksmuseum Voor Volkenkunde in Leiden, and the Tropen Museum in Amsterdam.

Sudjana Kerton Sudjana Kerton was born in Bandung, 1922. He made documentary paintings in sketches and sculptures depicting the struggle of independence, exhibited in Sono Budoyo Museum, Yogyakarta and other cities throughout Java. He won a fellowship to study in Amsterdam and Paris and later received a scholarship to study at the Art Students League, New York. Sudjana Kerton, as a painter of the “common folk of Indonesia,” started painting scenes of daily Indonesian (mostly village and farming) life. He was already painting landscapes and portraits of people in the years before the Struggle for Independence (Perjuangan Kemerdekaan) against the Dutch colonialists broke out. Kerton’s work shows a deep concern for the common people in Indonesia particularly the farmers. He was including as the pioneer of Indonesian Modern art. His astounding vision and perspective are increasingly being considered as serious counterpoints and responses to those of the country’s great masters, playing an equally important role in the expression of Modern Indonesian Soul.

Ong Kim Seng Born in 1945 in Singapore, a self-taught observer, traveler and passionate learner- Ong Kim Seng has climbed the ranks of formal appreciation to claim his title as one of the most celebrated water colorists. He is considered as one of Singapore’s most prominent artistic icons. The artist has shown mastery over the capture of light, often basking his creations in the warmth of sunlight, expertly using positive space and shadows to create stunningly realistic depictions of silhouettes and representation. Ong Kim Seng has exhibited worldwide and won a multitude of awards, including six awards from the American Watercolor Society, and the coveted Cultural Medallion for visual arts by the Ministry Of Information and the Arts, Singapore. The artist was also President of the Singapore Watercolor Society from 1991 to 2001 when he became Honorary President. Ong’s works have graced the collections of a number of museums and art galleries as well as the residences of foreign dignitaries such as Queen Elizabeth II of England and Kofi Annan, the Secretary-General of the United Nations. His works are also exhibited in foreign missions and embassies of the Republic of Singapore. Ong is a self-taught artist, who never had any formal art training. As a realist painter, his works focus on inanimate objects, architectural form, masonry, foliage and landscape. His style is “naturalist cum impressionistic”, which is “a combination of post-impressionist colour and the outlook of the American realist masters”.

Lee Man Fong Lee Man Fong was one of a rare artist who received honor by critics and collectors across Asia. What started with Realism, Shaparel is now known as an Abstract Expressionist. His switch, which was startling to many including his ardent admirer, displays not only Shaparel’s growth as an artist but his versatility as well, which is rarely seen in today’s artist. Those figures came from Java, Sumatera, Lombok and mostly from Bali. Beside figures, he also had interest in scenery object which he intensely and specially observed. “Nature always conquered human and drive human to control his culture”, said Krijono. Therefore, Krijono can easily capture the beauty of nature and then painted it. One of his favorite landscape was “Pantai Congot” (Congot beach), located in Kedungbendo village, Purbalingga, West Java. The beach was covered with high cliffs which stand tall like strong walls. On the upper part of the cliff, there is a housing area which possible for people to view the beauty of the ocean from the heights. Krijono painted “Pantai Congot” from his artistic point of view so he can present the beach with the cliff rock face. His expressiveness produced an exotics as well as enchanted view. Born in Jakarta, Krijono was an artist who gained tremendous appreciation from the art collectors. He treated color as the main and strong characteristics in his painting. His colorful works made him as one of the most popular painters throughout galleries in Bali in 1980 – 1990’s. Chen Wen Hsi Besides Chinese brush painting, Wen Hsi also produced abstract compositions in oils and Chinese inks of which his paintings showed a strong influence of analytical Cubism and Fauvism with non-naturalistic and exuberant colours. He has grown many plants and raised a great variety of fish, birds, and monkeys to help him in such studies. Gibbons and egrets are the two series most representative of Chen’s style. Chen WenHsi is renowned for his skill in painting gibbons. A life-long devotion to painting has made Chen one of Singapore’s living treasures. His success in marrying Chinese and Western art makes him both a pioneer and a representative figure of the 20th century Chinese art scene.

Willem Gerard Hofker Willem Gerard Hofker was born in the Netherlands in 1902. He received a formal art education, encouraged by an amateur artist Father, he attended first the ‘Academy of Fine Arts’ at the Hague followed by the ‘Rijksacademie’ in Amsterdam. A prestigious commission to paint Queen Wilhelmina resulted in a trip to Indonesia in 1938. Inspired by the beauty of the women, the landscape and fascinated by the rituals of Bali in particular, he remained there until 1944. During his sojourn in Ubud, he socialised with the other foreign artists Rudolf Bonnet and Walter Spies who were living and working there at the time. Hofker’s works include many Balinese dancers and typical Balinese village scenes yet this painting is of a Dutch girl. Returning to the Netherlands after the Second World War, Hofker continued to paint for a living. While much of his work was commissioned portraits he would still recreate the beautiful Balinese scenes that he had encountered years earlier. (Jo Shropshire)

Ismadi Sallehudin graduated with Bachelors in Fine Arts from Mara Institute of Technology (UiTM) in 1994 and subsequently he obtained his Masters in Art and Design from De Montfort University, Leicester, United Kingdom in 1999. After graduating, Ismadi remained active in academic work and has held positions such as Head of Programme, Kolej Shahputra-UiTM (2008), Deputy Dean, University College Shahputra, Pahang (2011) and he currently serves as Dean of Faculty of Fine Art, Akademi Seni Budaya & Warisan Kebangsaan (ASWARA), Kuala Lumpur. The expression of colours are very important to Ismadi. His works are accidental in the sense that he uses different techniques like scratching on the canvas, splashing of colours, quick strokes of the brush strokes, spontaneous brush flow and combinations of other techniques to produce on the artworks. His works have been exhibited extensively both locally and internationally.

Auke Cornelis Sonnega An artist’s quest to find inspiration and spiritual contentment can take him on a long voyage far away from home. Such was the journey for Dutch artist Auke Cornelis Sonnega. Born in Leeuwarden and educated at the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Amsterdam (School of Arts and Crafts), Sonnega first set foot on Indonesian soil when he arrived in Batavia in 1935. Two years later he moved to Bali, which became a great source of inspiration for his painting. After the war settled in Ubud in Bonnet’s old studio in Puri Kaleran and dedicated himself solely to painting. His style is fresh and unique, clearly influenced by his designer training and background. It is very influenced by Art Deco and often graphic, however, his larger canvases often transcend these limitations and can even be thought to have a mystical impact. He also made many portraits, usually of doe eyed young men (he was in the words of a long time Ubud expatriate euphemism a member of the “club”). These are very stylized and use a bright palate with strong outlining of his subjects. Sonnega, like Bonnet, stayed in Bali until 1957 when he was forced to leave by the Indonesia authorities in the era of Confrontation. The painting becomes all the more poignant when this separation is considered – the immortalization of a reality that was to him a fulfillment of a dream.

Rusli was born in Medan, North Sumatra, in 1912, and he studied at the Kala Bhawana Santiniketan University of Rabindranath Tagore, India from 1932 to 1938. In 1951, Rusli taught at the Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia (ASRI) in Yogyakarta. He joined Seniman Muda Indonesia (Indonesian Young Artists) and helped established the Seni Rupa Masyarakat (Art for People Association). In 1955 he held his solo exhibition at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. His works were exhibited at the Biennale Exhibition II in Sao Paolo, Brazil (1953), and Rusli also held solo exhibitions at Palazzo Brancaccio, Rome, Italy (1954 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 1956). Sadly, Rusli passed away in Jakarta on 11 May 2005.

S. Sudjojono S. Sudjojono, a self-taught artist who trained briefly at a Taman Siswa school, is widely regarded as the driving force behind the establishment of modern art in Indonesia. S. Sudjojono paintings have a typical harsh and wild strokes as if the paint has been poured directly onto canvas. His observation of his surroundings seemed spontaneous, as though they were snapshots of views that appealed to him. S. Sudjojono paintings often derived from his fantasy and memory he personally experienced. He often put joyful humor as a cloak over his painting. It’s an image that sometimes gets into his works because humor was always passing by his life. Because of his sense of humor, his works tends to trigger a smile or laughter if not poetic, sentimental, emotional or heroic. His works often come to us in caricature spirit. After getting divorced from their respective spouses, Rose and Sudjojono, married in 1959. They decided to live in Pasar Minggu area, which at that time was still considered the outskirts of Jakarta, and started to build their house, room by room. Pak Djon is a family man. He loved to sit together with his family talking about anything, music, art, homemaking, finance, education to politics. In the morning, he would sit at the front porch of his house and had some coffee. Then, he would directly draw sketches on the object that captured his interest. The present lot features a truck that often passed near his house. Historically, Pasar Minggu is a fruit cultivation area developed by the Dutch government during the colonial period. The central point of the cultivation area is the traditional market of Pasar Minggu, located in what is now called Pasar Minggu. There are many trucks passes by the Pejaten road to Pasar Minggu area. A truck is halted under the big tree with figure of traditional ice seller near the truck. The weather seems very hot that made the driver take a rest under the big tree while having a glass of cold ice from the seller. This perhaps also picturized the harsh condition of the people at the time, that became Sudjojono’s great attention in subject of his paintings about the daily life of common people.

Born in Jakarta, January 29, 1956. He studied at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI) in Yogyakarta (1974). In 1976 his name first emerged in the Indonesian Art Scene when he exhibited his works at the first Seni Rupa Baru Indonesia exhibition at the Balai Budaya, Jakarta. He has received several awards for his works, Jakarta Biennale 1981, won a Philip Morris Indonesian Art Awards in 1997 and was participated into the ASEAN Art Awards in Manila. Chen Wen Hsi Born in 1906, Guangdong (China). Chen Wen Hsi settled down in Singapore at 1948 and became an art teacher at The Chinese High School and taught there from 1949 to 1968, concurrently teaching art at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts from 1951 to 1959. As a passionate art educator he had greatly influenced many of Singapore’s early Chinese artists. Chen Wen Hsi is Singapore’s foremost painter that combines Chinese and Western techniques in his semi abstract work. Chen Wen-hsi is renowned for his skill in painting animal themes. Chicken, gibbons, herons, carps and squirrels are some of his favourite subjects. Numerous solo and group exhibitions were held in Singapore and around the world. Wen Hsi’s artistic excellence was recognized. Wen Hsi’s constant eagerness to strike for something new led him to learn finger painting – a technique that dates from the Tang Dynasty. This drawing style has enabled him to produce unpredictable broken stroke on paper. He developed his skill in finger painting, ink-and-brush, oil, sketches, abstracts and semi-abstract techniques. Every subject he paints, whether lotuses, gibbons, egrets, monkeys, squirrels, birds, or flowers and trees, is palpably vibrant.

Born in Kota Tinggi, Johor, Malaysia, 1936. He took his formal study at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, under Chen Wen Hsi and Cheong Soo Pieng and Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts de Paris ( Awarded French Government Scholarship) from 1959 – 1962. Pursued his studies in Singapore, and whilst there, came under the influence of Chen Wen Hsi, who taught at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. At the same time, he was also exposed to the other teachers there, who included Cheong Soo Pieng, Lim Tak Hai, Chen Chong Swee and Georgette Chen. He was the first artist from the Straits Settlements to gain a French government scholarship to study art in Paris at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts de Paris, from 1959 – 1961. Returning to Malaysia in 1962, he proceeded to open his studio in Penang, and was a strong influence on his younger brothers, Chia Hui Chian (19451985) and Chia Tick Chiam (b. 1945) Chia Yu Chian’s works often depicted figures in various shapes and forms, such as the Hospital Series made up of over 25 paintings and many drawings. These were his daily observations, as well as acute sensitivities to the eventfulness that connote his own experiences, having spent a few months on and off in the hospital. Since 1957, Chia Yu Chian has held more than 20 one-man shows. He held his solo exhibition in 1989 at Penang Museum and art Gallery and in at The Art Gallery, Penang. He received awards of ‘Salon des Indépendants’, Paris (Honorable Mention) and ‘Société des Artistes Français’, Paris (Honorable Mention). 82

Born in Garut, December 17, 1927. Popo Iskandar started painting in 1944. He graduated from the University of Indonesia and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Besides as a painter he is also an art observer and writer. In 1980 he received art award from Indonesian Government. He has participated in many exhibitions in Indonesia as well as overseas. His works were mostly on animal such as chicken, cat, and tiger. Popo’s career started with on-the-spot painting, capturing the concrete life events in the field. Although his early years of painting was influenced by Van Gogh’s style, there was an evidence that he had experimented further with some other styles like cubism, abstract composition, Chinese and Japanese calligraphy and other media or methods like monoprints. We could easily see his tendency to paint certain objects in repetition within the coverage of a single style, relying simply on memory and imagination. The major objects he mostly dealt with were no other than cats, roosters and leopards. These kinds of themes had become Popo’s trademark which he treated in a repetitive and minimalist manner. Lee Man Fong Lee Man Fong was one of a rare artist who received honor by critics and collectors across Asia. As an Oriental artist, Lee has renewed and transformed Western oil painting by imbuing it with the essence of Chinese ink painting, achieving a mutual identity between subject and object, at the same time vastly opening the restrictions on traditional Chinese painting. In short, he created a unique “Man-fong style”. Doves has become Lee Man Fong’s beloved and sought after works in spite of Goldfishes and other animals such as horses, cockatoos, tigers and dogs. Lee Man Fong’s painting of Doves is noteworthy. Since some forty years ago, his animal themes had made a far reaching accomplishment and recently eagerly sought after in Europe and America. A testimony to his mastery of technique and realization of theme, this painting depicts the world of the doves as peaceful and calm, but at the same time dynamic. The doves in pairs symbolize a good match, which may be further extended to mean “peaceful coexistence.”

Irsam was born in Klaten on June 24, 1942. This painter was known as the decorative painter with the themes of the village traditional life and the women and children activities. The forms are full of stylization and complex decoration. Irsam studied painting at ASRI Yogyakarta from 1958 to 1965. He ever taught at SSRI Yogyakarta from 1963 to 1967 and became the Kepala Seksi Seni Lukis dan Grafis at Direktorat Kesenian, Departemen Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan. He was active in joining the national and international exhibitions. In 1974 he got the award of Biennale Seni Lukis Indonesia in Jakarta.

He was a pioneering watercolourist in Singapore and one of the founders of the Singapore Watercolour Society. Unlike some of his contemporaries from the Nanyang group who were educated in Chinese art and aesthetics, Lim was Western educated and essentially a self-taught artist. His watercolour techniques and style had a great influence on the development of many artists in Singapore. Lim was a self-taught painter. Through self-study, practice and experimentation, he developed his own style and managed to get his works exhibited and sold. Lim often painted outdoors and was passionate about painting landscapes; trees and rivers were his favourite subjects. Lim was a founding member of the Singapore Watercolour Society in 1969. He also received the National Day Long Service Medal that year. In 1972 and 1974, Lim was awarded the National Day Art Exhibition Certificate.

Awang Damit Awang Damit is one of the most recognized abstract expressionists in Malaysia. He graduated with honours from Mara Institute of Technology (UiTM) in Fine Arts in 1983 and was awarded the Best Student award that year. He then obtained his Masters in Fine Arts with the Catholic University of America, Washington D.C. in 1988. Awang belongs to the second generation abstract expressionists in modern Malaysian art and has been lauded for his series Marista (2002) and Iraga (2011). In 1992, a work from his EOC series titled Farmerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Song clinched the Painting Prize at the coveted 3rd Salon Malaysia and he also received Honourable Mention at the 1994 and 1995 Philip Morris Malaysia Art Awards. Awang has held various exhibitions both in groups as well as solo including the Intipati Budaya â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Satu Sintesis show at the Shenns Fine Art, Singapore (1994), and Bentuk and Makna by Galeri Seni FSSR, UiTM (2000). Awang Damit has held positions as the Curator of the Art Gallery and Head of the Fine Arts Department before being appointed an Associate Professor in 2000.

Anton Huang Anton Kustia Widjaja (Anton Hwang) (1935-1984; Bandung, West Java), better known as Anton H, studied under artists Kartono Yudokusumo (1924-1957) and Barli Sasmitawinata (born in 1921) in Bandung, West Java. In 1969 he moved to Bali where he developed strong contacts with Western artists on the island. Antonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decorative works are rich in colour and design. Chen Wen Hsi Born in Baigong, Caozhu, 1906. Chen Wen Hsi studied art at the Hsin Hwa Art Academy in Shanghai. He became a lecturer at the Nangyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore. His paintings were strongly influenced by Chan (Zen) and the unorthodox Qing School of Yangzhou. He actively participated in several exhibitions outside Singapore which also incidentally promote Singapore. He was awarded the Public Service Star from the President Tun Yusof Bin Ishak and received honorary doctorate from the National University of Singapore. He became famous since his oil study on formalism, cubism, and expressive abstraction. Chen Wen Hsi is Singapore’s foremost painter that combines Chinese and Western techniques in his semi abstract work. Chen Wen-hsi is renowned for his skill in painting animal themes. Chicken, gibbons, herons, carps and squirrels are some of his favourite subjects. Wen Hsi’s constant eagerness to strike for something new led him to learn finger painting – a technique that dates from the Tang Dynasty. This drawing style has enabled him to produce unpredictable broken stroke on paper. He developed his skill in finger painting, ink-and-brush, oil, sketches, abstracts and semi-abstract techniques. Every subject he paints, whether lotuses, gibbons, egrets, monkeys, squirrels, birds, or flowers and trees, is palpably vibrant.

Antonio Blanco Antonio Blanco was born in Manila, Philippines, in 1927. After completing high school in Manila, Antonio went on to study arts in the National Academy of Art in New York, United States, under Sidney Dickinson. After establishing himself in Florida and California, Antonio decided to follow the footsteps of Paul Gauguin by moving to the Pacific for inspirations, and he finally settled in Ubud, Bali, in 1952. Antionio has received awards from the Tiffany Fellowship, New York, La Cofradia de el Arros, Spain, and has been honored by several international art organizations. Antonio spent a lifetime sketching and painting many kinds of objects like the sensuous teapots, the furrowed face of an old man, self-portraits, and the innocence of a child. Among those themes however, probably the most sought after works of Antonio are the paintings of bewitching and often erotic world full of women in pastel shades painted in erstwhile romantic fashion. His paintings are usually framed in his own design that sometimes becomes one unity to the object of the painting. Arie Smit Arie Smit was inspired by the watercolours of the great French artist Paul Signac. In his experiments with colour and fascination with light, Arie Smit identified with the Impressionist artist of the late 19th Century, particularly Paul Cezanne. He celebrates the tropical beauty and its wonder by presenting the essence of light filtered through the tropical plants, leaves, and trees. Arie Smit’s use of colour is sophisticated; red is mixed with purple, orange, blue, and yellow to suggest a temple basking in the sun’s glow. The vibrant colour combination exudes vitality and exuberance yet the mood imbued is peaceful and harmonious. Hindu temples and shrines are integral to life in Bali, and as such are common themes in Arie Smit’s works. It is typical of his works to depict community life in rural Bali, his most favoured subject matter. Arie Smit (born Adrianus Wilhelmus Smit in 1916), is a Dutch-born Indonesian artist has been captivated with Bali ever since his arrival in 1956. Affandi From there, he has held several one-man shows in several Indian Cities, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Italy. He received an Indonesian Art Award from the Ministry of Education and Culture (1969), the Dag Hammerskjoeld Prize from Italy (1977) and an Indonesian Government First Class Merit (1978). His works were exhibited in major exhibitions in Asia, Europe, and the Americas and were also be acquired by major art collectors and institutions all over the world since the 1950s Affandi is considered as the Indonesian Artist par excellence. He was the founder of the Himpunan Pelukis Masyarakat (Community’s Artists Association) in 1946 and Himpunan Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Artists Association) in 1947. Affandi was committed to creating a new artistic idiom for Indonesia. In the early of 1950s he travelled to India with a grant from the Indian Government. Besides India, he also displayed his works in the Biennale in Brazil (1952), Venice (1954), where he won an award, and Sao Paulo (1956). In 1957, he received a scholarship from the United States government to study arts, and he was subsequently appointed as an Honorary Professor in Painting by Ohio State University in Columbus. In 1974, Affandi received an honorary doctorate from University of Singapore, the Peace Award from the Dag Hammarskjoeld Foundation in 1977, and the title of Grand Maestro in Florence, Italy. It is not easy to understand Affandi’s painting. For example when Affandi painted the horse, he painted it with his own understanding. Realism was never Affandi’s objective but instead he captured the expression of the horse by pouring the paint directly from the tube to the canvas. His wild lines and colors was painted with deep emotion and expressed spontaneously. In this painting, Horse, we can see how Affandi visualized the object. He did not just move the object away, rather its underlying beauty lies precisely in the emotions and expressions that he felt when looking at the horse directly. Scratches of lines and colors were not only intended to beautify its appearance, but also an attempt to create an atmosphere that he wanted to convey..

Alimin Tamin was born in Solok, West Sumatra, in 1932. He begun studying painting in 1952 under the guidance of S. Sudjojono and Harijadi Sumadijaja as a member of Seniman Indonesia Muda (SIM, Young Indonesian Artists) group in Yogyakarta. Alimin moved to Jakarta in 1954, and with Nashar (1928 – 1994) founded the Matahari artists’ association at Balai Budaja. In 1957, Alimin moved to Bali where he taught drawing in the Department of Fine Art and Architecture at Universitas Udayana (Udayana University) in Denpasar from 1965 to 1969. He was chairman of the Indonesian artists’ association Citra in Bali from 1975 to 1978. Alimin participated in the Biennale II Jakarta in 1976, and also in many exhibitions in Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta and Bali.

Lee Cheng Yong was born on 26 March 1913. He studied art at the Sin Hwa Art Academy, Shanghai (Shanghai Academy of Fine Art) and was a teacher at Chung Ling High School, Penang. On his return from Shanghai, he held a one-man show at the Philomatic Union, Acheen Street in 1934. His works were mostly oil painted after the Post-Impressionist tradition of Gauguin and Van Gogh. He held a successful one-man show at the Chin Kang Association, MacAlister Road on 26th-30th December 1960, showing 98 paintings and sculptures. He died on 24th Febuary 1974.

Carel Lodewijk Dake, Jr Born in Schaerbeek, Belgium in 1886, Carel L. Dake Jr. learnt to paint from his father, the artist CL Dake. He also studied alongside E. Pieters, AM Gorter, and H.M. Krabbe while in Laren, the Netherlands. CL. Dake Jr. visited Indonesia in 1912 and lived in Java, Sumatra, and Bali. In 1915, he made three large diorama depicting Indonesia for the World Fair of San Francisco. CL. Dake Jr. has held solo exhibitions in Bogor, Bandung, and Jakarta through the years 1919 to 1933. He was one of the Mooi Indie artists who worked and lived in Indonesia. The themes for his works are mostly landscape views the natural beauty surrounding him such as the sea, mountains, and paddy fields in which he portrays in his naturalistic style. CL Dake Jr. art works are in the collection of many art collectors around the world. Sadly, CL Dake Jr. died in Jakarta in 1946.

Abdul Aziz Abdul Aziz was born in Purwokerto, Central Java, and showed precocious artistic talent from childhood. His first Diploma was in Social Sciences from Gajah Mada University, after which he studied Art at the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) in Jogyakarta. Due to his exceptional talent he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Academia di Belle Arti in Rome in 1958, where he was awarded two Diplomas, in Painting and in Decoration. On his return to Indonesia in 1965 he lectured in Fine Art at Udayana University and established his studio in Ubud Bali. Abdul Aziz is now regarded as one of Indonesia’s greatest artists of the 20th Century. Originally from Central Java but a resident of Bali for the last part of his life, Aziz was widely known and highly sought after for his realistic paintings of village scenes and portrait figures. Aziz’s paintings include beautiful women, depicted alone or in groups, and portraits both painted and sculpted. Yet his oeuvre stands out as more of an individual whose contributions to Indonesian art history exceeds most, placing him in a class of artists who are continuously referred to as the ‘greats’: those individual artists that Western-trained or influenced art writers found to be the most original and innovative of their time. Aziz was only seventeen when Indonesia proclaimed its independence from Dutch colonial rule in 1945. He was already known, both as an artist and a singer. After four years of Japanese occupation, Indonesia then entered into a war for independence against the three returning colonials (Netherlands, Britain, and Portugal). That struggle ended in 1948, with international acceptance of the Republic of Indonesia. However, the Dutch still fought on until 1949. Purwokerto (in central Java) was attacked in July 1947, and Aziz was able to paint and sketch battle scenes during the war as he became a revolutionary fighter. Aziz only painted when inspired. The Long March was one of his paintings that was inspired by his own battle experience.

Cheng Haw-Chien has been appointed as the principle of Central Academy of Art, Kuala Lumpur, and in 1996, at the invitation of China Artist Association, China, he led a Malaysian artist delegation to Beijing, Shanghai, Hangchow, and Nanjing and held “Malaysian Art Exhibition” in the National China Art Gallery, Beijing, China. Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal is a multi-talented who graduated from the Birmingham School of Architecture, in 1950 and from 1951 to 1955; he furthered his studies at the Chelsea School of Art, London. Upon his return from England, Datuk Syed worked as a teacher in Sekolah Tinggi Batu Pahat, Johor from 1956 to 1957. In 1957 he was a lecturer at Institut Latihan Guru Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. In 1958 to 1959 he worked at the Malayan Teachers Training College, Kirkby, England. In 1963 to 1964 he studied sculpture at the School of Art Institute, Chicago, Illinois, United States. Then he was appointed as Director of Institut Latihan Guru Cheras in 1964. Datuk Syed gained his Master Degree in Art History at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu in 1973. In 1974, he studied philosophy at Harvard University’s Islamic Art, Cambridge (USA). Upon his return, he worked at the Asian Art Museum, University of Malaya and was later appointed as Director of Cultural Centre, University of Malaya in 1979. He was appointed as Director of the Balai Visual Negara between 1983 and 1991. Throughout his career, the late Datuk Syed received numerous prestigious awards Ahli Mangku Negara (1969); Kesatria Mangku Negara (1983); ASEAN Cultural Award - Visual Art (1987), and in 1995, he was awarded the National Art Award; subsequently, the Panglima Jasa Negara in 1996. Besides numerous group and solo exhibitions, Syed Ahmad Jamal also published several important art books namely Antara Rupa dan Jiwa (1992), Kunang-Kunang (1999) as well as references for exhibition catalogues. He is a prolific artist of excellence. He experimented with different artistic movements including impressionism, expressionism, and abstract expressionism. Datuk Syed’s paintings are mostly abstract and painted in a reductive manner which turned away from figuration and legible meanings. Within the context of Malaysia, he is considered the first artist who introduced abstract art through his work titled “Bait”, a masterpiece produced in 1959. In fact, it was a new monumental step for Malaysia’s art movement approaching to new form of expression. Here, the colours, line, form, and space work together weaving their own reality with a fanciful vision. This reflects Datuk Syed’s popular statement “Malaysian Art begins now!” (kesenian Malaysia bermula sekarang) is an important indicator to a new era of painting in modern Malaysia. The painting Endau Rompin features a combination of colours and forms to create powerful illusions of depth. Similar depictions can be seen in Datuk Syed’s book Kunang-Kunang. He mixed and applied paint with precision and control building texture with sweeping colour. The structure and brush strokes are imbued with the artist’s self-consciousness where colours and forms were utilised as elements of art to fuel the inspiration from forestry. Flowing layers of blue and green creates an interaction between abstract trees forms and surrounding forests. In the painting Endau Rompin, the final composition and artistic expression has reached its higher degree of excellence.

Hendra Gunawan Hendra Gunawan painted some of his surreal, lively, and emotional work during his imprisonment at Kebun Waru in Bandung from 1965 to 1978. His works captured the life of common people while also conveying a unique, expressionistic, and deeply personal vision of the reality he experienced. His paintings become highly original, modern, simple, and totally Indonesian with its expressions by observing Java’s grand landscapes and natural history. Hendra’s work may thus be seen as illustration of a new mythology. The stylized figures, landscapes features and the decorative approach to color are perhaps influenced by Javanese illustration and design. The underwater world is likely one of the most astonishing and fascinating of Hendra’s works in realistic painting. The subject seems apparently to be a conflict with the artist’s style, themes, and artistic concerns. This painting, Ikan Laut, was painted in 1973, and reflects one of Hendra’s favorite subjects of rich seas. Hendra has clearly created a scheme of expressionistic colors based on the actual hues of the ocean. The link between his distinctive palette and aquatic colors become even more apparent. He used brilliant colors for the ocean textures and character of the fishes.

Born in Cirebon, in 1907, Affandi is considered as the Indonesian Artist par excellence. He was the founder of the Himpunan Pelukis Masyarakat (Community’s Artists Association) in 1946 and Himpunan Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Artists Association) in 1947. Affandi was committed to creating a new artistic idiom for Indonesia. In the early of 1950s he traveled to India with a grant from the Indian Government. From there, he has held several one-man shows in several Indian Cities, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Italy. Ong Kim Seng Born in Singapore in 1945, Ong Kim Seng has been a full-time artist since 1985. He has participated in group and solo exhibitions in Singapore and throughout the globe in countries such as the United States, China, United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, Belgium, Germany, France, Middle East, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the ASEAN countries. Soedibio Soedibio was born in Madiun, East Java, in 1912. In 1940, Soedibio became a member of the first Indonesian Painters Organization (PERSAGI) where he met with other prominent artists such as S. Sudjojono, Affandi, Basuki Resobowo, Trisno Soemardjo, Agus Djaya, Otto Djaya, and many others. During the revolution, together with S. Sudjojono and Trisno Soemardjo he founded the Young Indonesian Artist Organization (Seniman Indonesia Muda) in 1946. During his career as an artist, he actively participated in several exhibitions from the 1950’s to the 70’s. Soedibio’s art is considered as a multidimensional work since it combined different kinds of style such as abstract, decorative, realistic, and even surrealistic styles. Though multi-dimensional, people remembered him as a painter that had a strong tendency in decorative style. Most of his works centered on the Javanese tradition such as folk tales, myth legend, puppet (wayang) stories, and daily life. As a result, many of his paintings appear to be narratives with strong, bright, and vibrant colours.

Nasirunâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s paintings do not simply depict comprehensible scenes, but rather are usually intertwined personifications or animations of his thoughts and quests. He mentions that often he paints to make sense of his concerns. Therefore, there is little sense in trying to understand rationally what he is trying to convey in his art works. His message is meant to be conveyed through senses and emotions. Born in Cilacap, in 1965, Nasirun graduated from the Indonesian Institute of Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta in 1994. There, Nasirun received awards for the best sketches and paintings from ASRI, and was selected as one of the five best paintings at Yayasan Seni Rupa Indonesia (Indonesian Fine Arts Foundation). Nasirun has been honoured with the Philip Morris Indonesian Art Award, and was one of the few Indonesian artists selected to participate in the ASEAN Art Awards in Manila, the Philippines. M. Irfan M. Irfan was born in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra in 1972. M. Irfan is included in 51 members of the young artists from West Sumatra that recently held a group exhibition under the theme Panorama. He is widely known as a perspective artist in the Indonesian art scene. He was one of the member or Jendela Group, a group of artists from Minang, West Sumatra. Basically Irfan is an artist that does not like to involve himself in great or political issues. He feels that they are simply beyond his capacity and interests. For him perceiving petty objects around him is more interesting. This painting, Iron Head, is Irfan’s personal observation towards his surroundings. Irfan’s paintings of trains’ series have captivated the people’s interest. Irfan paints mostly on large canvases, a testament to his skill and confidence. Lee Man Fong Born in Canton, China, in 1913, Lee Man Fong is one of a rare artist who has received honor by critics and collectors across Asia. As an Oriental artist, Lee man Fong has renewed and transformed Western oil painting by imbuing it with the essence of Chinese ink painting, achieving a mutual identity between subject and object, at the same time vastly opening the restrictions on traditional Chinese painting. In short, he created a unique “Man Fong style”. Lee Man Fong is famous artist who captures gold fishes in magnificent way. Some gold fishes are swimming freely in the space of an aquarium, still with his essential element by using the light, reflecting the sun’s radiance, Lee success to bring all the goldfishes as a depiction of calmness. In Lee Man Fong’s paintings, light is of prime importance and the subjects are consistently bathed in a luminous glow as presented in this lot. The background, unlike the flat, void spaces of Chinese paintings, is likewise illuminated by an almost mysterious glow of white sunlight. A prominent Singapore Chinese ink artist, Yeo Hoe Koon was trained at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, and later at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Upon his return to Singapore, Yeo decided to pursue a career as an arts teacher while practicing his art in his free time. Through the decades, he has built up a reputation as a Chinese ink artist whose sought-after works have been auctioned by Christie’s. Born in 1935 in Hainan, China, Yeo Hoe Koon moved to Singapore with his family at a young age. His father painted as a hobby, regularly drawing what he saw around him. Observing his father drawing a man climbing a coconut tree, Yeo discovered a new understanding of art. But he would not seriously consider pursuing art until he was 18, when he started to take a serious interest in painting. He realised that the memory of his father drawing had left a deep impression on him, and it would help him greatly in his artistic endeavours.

Widayat Born in Kutoarjo, Central Java, in 1919, Widayat was also known as the lecturer of the Indonesian Institute of Fine Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta as well as a prominent artist. Since 1950 to 2002 he participated in numerous art exhibitions in Indonesia as well as abroad, in countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong, Netherlands, Italy, United States, and Australia. Widayat is said to be a maestro after Affandi, as published in the book “Educator and Painter” by ISI Yogyakarta in 1988. Widayat was also a revolutionary artist, and master of gardening and graphics arts. Widayat was the first artist whose exhibition was largely exhibited in the Singapore Art Museum, one of the most important museums in Southeast Asia on September 2007 and it was held for the duration of two months. According to Prof. Soedarso Sp MA, Widayat’s artistic works can be levelled with the works of Henri Rousseau (a France surrealist artist) who has been his great inspiration. Widayat paints freely, and is unburdened by anything except that he always attempts to infuse contents, giving significance to his imaginary space by means of symbols and indications. Looking at Widayat’s works, we are taken to the archaic nature and to the daily life, without perspective, and without criticism for something. We may remark them as beautiful and alluring, crowding our retinas, innocently accepting reality, fascinatingly interpretable, and mystically thrilling space.

Dullah studied arts under the legendary Affandi and Sudjojono and soon developed a distinctive style of naturalism of his own. He was well known for his landscape, portraits, and still life paintings, which reflect his philosophy of focusing on the surroundings of the common people. One of the founders of HBS – Surakarta Cultural Community, Dullah was selected to edit the book of former President Soekarno’s Private Collection of Indonesian Art (Volume I & II) and was appointed to care and curate for the state art collection. Dullah has never been overly concerned with the innate beauty of charisma of a subject, nor has he manipulated objects and people in such a way as to gain a certain flashy style or shallow substance of his works. In 1960’s Dullah developed a technique for the use of oil paints that was to become his trademark. This technique involved the integrated use of transparent oil washes that duplicats the characteristic of watercolor. The transparency of Dullah’s approach to oils allowed his skilled and graceful brush work to create nuances of color and tone as backgrounds for his subject. At age 70, Dullah built his museum, now a cultural landmark, to place his dedication and love of arts over his creative lifetime. Dullah has had numerous art exhibitions in Indonesia and abroad, and in 1988 his work was included in the Art of Bali exhibition held at the East West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Now, most of his works are kept in the Dullah Museum in Solo.

Born in Jakarta, on 29th January 1956, Dede Eri Supria studied at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta in 1974. In 1976 his name first emerged in the Indonesian Art Scene when he exhibited his works at the first Seni Rupa Baru Indonesia Exhibition at the Balai Budaya, Jakarta. He has received several awards for his works, including the Jakarta Biennale (1981) and the Philip Morris Indonesian Art Awards in 1997. Dede was also selected to participate in the ASEAN Art Awards in Manila. He has participated in many group shows as well as solo exhibitions. Dede has held solo exhibitions at the Jakarta Stock Exchange (1997) and at the Art Folio Space, Singapore (2002). Today, he is considered an influential propagator of super-realist painting in Indonesia.

Affandi Affandi was passionate about his country and a large proportion of his works concerns his feelings about the land and its people. Though Affandi only painted what he observed and never approached his works from any kind of philosophical or analytical starting point, he was particularly fond of Balinese and Javanese culture. There are some works that used natural landscapes as their subject matter. Affandi especially liked to depict seascapes, or coastal landscapes with fishing boats. However, these works are far from being naturalistic, as they hardly relate to the matter of sky color, as affected by the sunlight. The natural landscapes seen in Affandi’s paintings do not show any “realistic effect”, either. It is generally known that Affandi’s landscapes – as well as other paintings – reveal lines (the result of paint applied directly on the canvas using the painter’s hands instead of brushes) that area arabesque and staccato in nature ant rhythm. The images in many of his landscapes require a keen eye for arts to be recognised.

Srihadi Soedarsono During his career, Srihadi followed the Bandung style of cubism that was characterized by a kaleidoscopic use of color. Next he tries abstraction, and then informal art to expose the social problems which also included many paintings of Borobudur, the immense 9th century Buddhist monument in Central Java. Srihadiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Borobudur is presented in the abstraction of his personal lyrical expressionistic style. The Borobudur is illustrated as a form of monumental black color. The abstraction achievement is seen through the strong strokes on the wall of the temple combined with the gentle sweep on the sky and earth that present the distinctive spiritual silence, like in other work of Srihadi. Srihadi considers the artistic architectural form of Borobudur set in the surrounding natural environment. As a concrete statement that religious behavior and attitudes are the highest human values, Borobudur is living proof of the hopes and ideals of mankind. His experimentation on the theme of Borobudur takes a long process of attempting to understand the essence of life and nature. The great monument Borobudur is an icon of cultural. Symbolizing the various stages of life, Borobudur is a cultural text as well as an embodiment of human religiosity.

Born in Tegal, Central Java, in 1957, Dadang Christanto studied arts at Pawiyatan Sanggar Bambu, Yogyakarta (1975 to 1977), Sekolah Seni Rupa (SMSR) Yogyakarta (1975 to 1979), and The Institute of Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta (1980 to 1986). Dadang Christanto later became a lecturer at the School of Art and Design, Northern Territory University, Darwin, Australia (1999 to 2003) and a lecturer at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia (2004). Since 2006 he lives and works in Brisbane, Australia.

Antonio Blanco Don Antonio Blanco was born in Manila, Philippines, in 1927. After completing high school in Manila, Antonio went on to study arts in the National Academy of Art in New York, United States, under Sidney Dickinson in 1934. After establishing himself in Florida and California, Antonio decided to follow the footsteps of Paul Gauguin by moving to the Pacific for inspirations, and he finally settled in Ubud, Bali, in 1952. Antionio has received awards from the Tiffany Fellowship, New York, La Cofradia de el Arros, Spain, and has been honored by several international art organizations. For his contributions to the art scene in Bali, the government of Bali presented him with the Dharma Kusuma Cultural award in 1997 in recognition of his dedication to arts. Artist comment: “Virgin of Bali with White Headress” (an Original pastel and watercolor work of art). The Demure, sensitive study of this gentel, delightful Balinese Girl was created in or around 1953 in Campuan, Ubud, Bali, Indonesia when at such time I was went to paint directly from models (mostly Bali girls around my compound. Huang Fong was born in Genteng, Banyumas, East Java, in 1936. He graduated from IKIP Seni Rupa, Surabaya, Indonesia and he is was a member of Kamboja Group. Huang Fong started painting under the guidance of the artist Tan Kiaw Tek using watercolor and in 1961, was taught to paint using oils by the artist Nurdin. Huang Fong made friends with many senior artists and learnt a great deal from them. One of them would become a famous Indonesian artist, Affandi, whom he befriended in Bali in 1968. In 1963, Huang Fong decided to become a full time artist. Huang Fong went to Bali in 1967 and lived in Ubud which he later on moved to Denpasar. Huang Fong began to explore his arts by mixing the Eastern and Western techniques. Huang Fong has held solo exhibitions since 1961 and his art pieces have been exhibited in Indonesia, Taiwan, South Korea, and Australia

Born in Zaandam, the Netherlands, 1916, Arie Smit was a student of the Academy of Arts in Rotterdam before working as lithographer for the Dutch Colonial Army in the Dutch Indies prior to the Second World War. He moved to Bali in 1956 to be engaged as a full time artist and became an Indonesian Citizen. Arie Smit has produced as well as taught painting at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Many of his paintings depict the nature of his surrounding environment. He had several solo exhibitions in Bandung Institute of Technology, The Honolulu East West Center, and the Center of Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta. Arie Smit has received the “Dharma Kusuma” art awards from the local government of Bali for his contribution to the Bali art scene.

Alimin Tamin Born in Solok, West Sumatra, in 1932, Alimin began his study in arts under the guidance of S.Sudjojono and Harijadi in SIM (Young Indonesian Artists in Yogyakarta) in 1952. He moved to Jakarta in 1954, and together with Nashar, Wim Nirahua, Mardian, A. Wakidjan and Alex Wetik, Alimin founded the Matahari Artists Association at Balai Budaya Jakarta. In 1957, he moved to Bali where Alimin taught drawing at the Department of Fine Arts and Architecture, Udayana University, Denpasar. In 1960 Alimin and Gusti Sholihin co-founded “Kedaton Studio” in Denpasar. He was the Chairman of CITRA - Indonesian Artists Association in Denpasar, Bali from 1975 to 1978. Alimin has participated in exhibitions in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung, and Bali. Alimin moved to Yogyakarta in 1982 where he passed away on March 2004. Alimin was greatly fond of painting using theme of Balinese people and its traditions. The theme of dancers was one of his main sources of inspiration. Here, Alimin showed a dramatic moment of the dancers painted in a realistic style. He accurately drew the figure with light and shadows, showing details of clothing ornaments and accessories. The performance is in an open stage with gamelan musician playing on the background. The hanging ornaments of the young coconut leaf with flowers from the offerings were scattered on the floor.

Born in Banyumas, Central Java, in 1943, Sunaryo studied at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) majoring in Sculptures (1969), and continued his study in Carrarra, Italy. During 1970’s, Sunaryo’s sculptures were very much influenced by tribal arts in Indonesia. Besides sculptures, he is also a master in painting using his artistic touch. He inaugurated his museum, Selaras Sunaryo, in Bandung in 1998.
