STRAITS CHINESE VICTORIAN BELL JAR (GELAI TUTUP) Dimension: H 12 in. Base: L 10.2 in. W 6.5 in. Glass, porcelain, wire and velvet SGD 1,000 - 1,500 USD 760 - 1,140 ‘Gelai tutup’ was one of the decorative items that young nyonyas, particularly those from Penang, made for the wedding chamber during the 12-day Peranakan wedding. The tradition of ‘gelai tutup ‘was derived from the British during the colonial period in Malaya. Bell jar cloches were used in Victorian England to protect delicate blooms and plants from excessive temperature fluctuations, rain, wind and pests. This then grew into a tradition of bringing the great outdoors in the home. Stuffed birds, porcelain dolls, flowers and, later, faux blooms were worked and encased into bell jar cloches. Most Victorian bell jar cloches were made of hand-blown glass

It is a type of transparent glaze that was first used on greenware, but later used on other porcelains. Celadon originated in China and notable kilns such as the Longquan kiln in Zhejiang province are renowned for their celadon glazes. Celadon production later spread to other regions in Asia, such as Japan, Korea and Thailand. For many centuries, celadon wares were highly regarded by the Chinese Imperial court, before being replaced in fashion by painted wares, especially the new blue and white porcelain under the Yuan dynasty. 14

a. LONG EMBROIDERED PANEL Dimension: 57 x 148 cm b.THREE PIECES OF EMBROIDERED HANGINGS 19th century Dimension: Red embroidery: 49 x 34 cm Yellow triangular shape: 63 x 32 cm Yellow necktie shape: 106 x 22 cm SGD 9,000 - 15,000 USD 6,830 - 11,380

Documented in “Beadwork and Embroidery - A Collector’s Guide “ by Ho Wing Meng, published by Marshall Cavendish Editions, 2008 in page 97, 99,104 and 129.

A collection of Ho Wing Meng, this long embroidered panel, intended adorning the wedding bed, is embellished with peony blossoms and a pair of phoenixes, butterflies (symbols of conjugal bliss), stags and cranes (symbol of long life). The principal stitch used in the Pekinese knot. Necktie- shaped embroidered hanging were traditionally used to decorate the red angled gold, four poster wedding bed. The yellow embroidered panel - reputed to have been a family heirloom of excellent workmanship. The motif has a naturalistic quality and is typical of the best of 19th century Chinese embroidery. (pg. 104) The triangular- like, yellow embroidered panel is a bridal selendang which formerly belonged to Straits Chinese family in Singapore. The small but crowded designs are finely worked in Satin stitches. The significant feature of the embroidery is the use of extremely fine Pekinese knots for all the decorative motifs. (pg.97) The red pieces is a traditional Straits Chinese embroidery executed entirely out of fine satin stitches; seed stitches and stem stitches were used only for the minor details. The design is predominantly of peony blossom in blue, purple, rose- pink and yellow complemented by bird and butterflies, all of which were traditionally propitious for wedding ceremony. This embroidery panel was probably used as an ornamental cover for blackwood tea table. (pg.99) 46

A LARGE STRAITS CHINESE PORCELAIN OVERGLAZED GREEN KAMCHENG WITH PHOENIX AND PEONY MOTIF Dimension: Overall Dimension:10.4 in. External Mouth Dimension: 9 in. H 10 in. SGD 7,500 - 10,000 USD 5,690 - 7,600 Kamchengs are one of the most recognisable examples of Peranakan Chinese porcelain because they were found in almost every Peranakan Chinese household. Kamcheng is a representative of the culture .Peranakan Chinese porcelain were commissioned and manufactured in China and exported for use by the Peranakan Chinese in the British Straits Settlements. These porcelain were typically owned by the wealthy families and they used them during auspicious occasions like weddings and birthdays. The Chinese may call it a ginger jug but Baba Nyonyas named it as kamcheng. It is used for fermenting all sorts of things and also used as a punch bowl during Chinese New Year. This kamcheng which is large was usually used to store or serve food. The knob on the cover takes the form of a lion-dog, and the interior is decorated with parakeet among flowers.
