Arie Smit As Gauguin was entranced by Tahiti, so has Smit been enamoured with Bali ever since his arrival there in 1956. In an artistic career which spans over fifty years, Smit has sought to capture and thereby celebrate the tropical beauty and wonder of his adopted home. Arie Smit is best known for his paintings of fertile rice fields, vast valley and mountain ranges, temple courtyards and monumental gateways, and festive temple processions of Bali. Arie’s landscapes often go beyond the scenes of nature. Landscape, Hills and Trees is not a mere rendition of the rolling green terrain of the valley. His painting show breath-taking landscapes, relaxing youths, colorful tropical gardens, glittering seascapes, and quiet temples that evoke a sense of wander. The vibrant colour combination exudes vitality and exuberance yet the mood imbued is peaceful and harmonious.

Chen Wen Hsi A life-long devotion to painting has made Chen one of Singapore's living treasures. His success in marrying Chinese and Western art makes him both a pioneer and a representative figure of the 20th century Chinese art scene. He developed his painting style in various medium; ink-and-brush, oil, and also sketches. Ink and brush are not enough for the Singapore artist. While he has not altogether dropped traditional Chinese elements from his paintings, he has developed his own style by experimenting with the possibilities offered by Western art. Chen Wen-hsi is famous for his skill in painting animal themes. Being considered as Singapore’s foremost painter, Chen Wen-hsi is renowned for his skill in painting gibbons. Gibbons and egrets are the two series most representative of Chen's style. At his last exhibition in Taiwan ten years ago, his gibbons were highly praised. Lee Man Fong Lee Man Fong was one of a rare artist who received honor by critics and collectors across Asia. As an Oriental artist, Lee has renewed and transformed Western oil painting by imbuing it with the essence of Chinese ink painting, achieving a mutual identity between subject and object, at the same time vastly opening the restrictions on traditional Chinese painting. In short, he created a unique “Man-fong style”. Doves has become Lee Man Fong’s beloved and sought after works in spite of Goldfishes and other animals such as horses, cockatoos, tigers and dogs. Lee Man Fong’s painting of Doves is noteworthy. Since some forty years ago, his animal themes had made a far reaching accomplishment and recently eagerly sought after in Europe and America. A testimony to his mastery of technique and realization of theme, this painting depicts the world of the doves as peaceful and calm, but at the same time dynamic. The doves in pairs symbolize a good match, which may be further extended to mean “peaceful coexistence.”

Jean-François Larrieu Jean-François Larrieu was born on 28th February 1960 in Tarbes (high Pyrénées). He is a self-taught artist who is living and working in Paris. Larrieu is President of the “Paris Autumn Show” (Salon d’Automne de Paris) and Vice President of the Government affiliated “Federation of Graphic and Plastic Arts Associations”. Jean-François Larrieu started its artistic career at the young age of 11 when he entered the François Villon Academy of Painting. His works are sungorged and flamboyant paintings, overflowing with jubilatory yet contrasting vibrations. A number of his paintings have been inspired by his several travels; reinterpreting places according to his own alphabet. His favourite subjects are landscapes and trees, reaffirming the roots and absolute necessity of plants, enabling genuine human development and survival. A myriad of tiny elements punctuate his tableaus: so many characters from his personal universe, so many fables that we imagine as we are swept away by the tsunami of colours and motion in his work. The artist elaborates through his oil paintings ramifications which starts from a basic point and then progresses like a semi-conscious exploration; his hand, likens to an antennae drawing from the creative cosmos and delivers the genius. The result is exotic cities filled with wonderfully rich architecture steadily rising up and then spreads itself across the land of canvas with amazing constructions of onion-shaped domes, minarets and cupolas. For Larrieu, imagination is the rule of the game. Furthermore the combinations are all the more variable according to the angle from which the master’s painting is observed. Through his paintings, Larrieu invites us to join him on a fabulous journey into his magical cities where Roman and Gothic porches; Baroque palaces, the China of Marco Polo as well as the Venice of Casanova are strongly reminiscent. When the painted cities on canvas is near completion, the artist ingeniously conjures into being an emblematic figure, which oft most is an animal. The beauty and elegance of Larrieu’s paintings will bring forth from the audience certain appreciation; where the meanders are different, the cities enchanting and the journey is never the same every time. Widayat Widayat paints freely, unburdened by anything except that he always attempts at infusing contents, giving significance to his imaginary space by means of symbols and indications. Watching Widayat’s works, we are taken to archaic natures and to the daily life, without perspective, and without criticize for something. We may remark them as beautiful and alluring, crowding our retinas, innocently accepting reality, fascinatingly interpretable, and mystically thrilling the space. Widayat is a famous painter with “decora-magic” style, which means the works were fully decorated and can produced magical effect. His works are based on his daily life experiences. Such experiences he imparts through the representations of human and animal figures, plants and imaginary beings, characterized by spontaneity and uninterrupted strong lines. Most of his paintings can give magnificent excitement by his ability in creating stylistic forms of trees, birds, fishes, or his favorite animal. The form also gives decorative motif with the use of hard and dark color producing textures and subtle impression. The present lot is considered as Widayat’s best work describing a huge old tree in Ankor Wat, Thailand. 159 WIDAYAT (Kutoarjo, 1919 – Jakarta, 2002) Akar Sejati 1988 Oil on canvas: 150 x 92 cm Signed and dated, lower right: Widayat, 88 Provenance: anonymous sale, Sotheby’s SGD 42,000 - 62,000 USD 30,240 - 44,640

Srihadi Soedarsono During his career, Srihadi followed the Bandung style of cubism that was characterized by a kaleidoscopic use of color. Next he tries abstraction, and then informal art to expose the social problems which also included many paintings of Borobudur, the immense 9th century Buddhist monument in Central Java. Srihadi’s Borobudur is presented in the abstraction of his personal lyrical expressionistic style. The Borobudur is illustrated as a form of monumental black color. The abstraction achievement is seen through the strong strokes on the wall of the temple combined with the gentle sweep on the sky and earth that present the distinctive spiritual silence, like in other work of Srihadi. Srihadi considers the artistic architectural form of Borobudur set in the surrounding natural environment. As a concrete statement that religious behavior and attitudes are the highest human values, Borobudur is living proof of the hopes and ideals of mankind. His experimentation on the theme of Borobudur takes a long process of attempting to understand the essence of life and nature. The great monument Borobudur is an icon of cultural. Symbolizing the various stages of life, Borobudur is a cultural text as well as an embodiment of human religiosity.

Rearngsak Boonyavanishkul Rearngsak Boonyavanishkul was born in Singhburi, Thailand 1961. Since the age of 7, Rearngsak has been interested in art. He graduated from the Silkakorn University in Bangkok, Thailand with a B.F.A in Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Art (1986). Rearngsak Boonyavanishkul was heavily influenced by the modernism movement in the West. He went through a period of Surrealism, painting words that transcends reality and escapes into the metaphysical world. He has worked in Bali and other Southeast Asian countries and is now well established in Singapore. He began to paint Balinese and Thai dancers, of which their photographic realism deserves one’s utmost admiration. In fact every dancer is captured with sleekness and clarity and their costumes are intricately decorated to the tiniest detail possible. As a Thai artist, his works are often heavily laced with religious themes. Besides painting dancers, Rearngsak Boonyavanishkul is well known for his realistic painting of horses. Usually he used horses as object of his sculptures. His horses are visually powerful beautiful animals that symbolize nature at its most magnificent with its speed, virility and nobility. 208 POPO ISKANDAR (Garut, 1927 – Bandung, 2000) Dua Macan / Two Panthers, 1997 Oil on canvas: 100 x 145 cm Signed and dated, lower left: Popo'97 Literature: Jim Supangkat, Dr. I. Bambang Sugiharto, Perspektif Karya-karya Popo Iskandar, Published by Studio Titian Seni & Griya Seni Popo Iskandar, Bandung, 2000, Pg. 164 SGD 15,000 - 20,000 USD 10,800 - 14,400
Popo Iskandar started painting using cats object in the early 1960s which then developed into leopards in early 1980s. Repetitive theme of cats, chickens and leopards probably has become Popo Iskandar’s main contemplation in reflecting the essence of cats, nudity or even mystery of nature. The source of his idea of cats is not the form of the cat, but rather its involvement in various situations and conditions which stimulate his ideas and imaginations. In painting a cat, he feels that he doesn’t only present it physically, but that he tries to express the meaning and the impression of the cat’s appearance for him. So, a cat for him is a totality of inspired understanding, an integrated understanding of music and poetry. Popo’s leopards strongly express smooth line as if the flow of the music. As in cats, leopards figure often shown alone or in groups. Therefore, we often see a leopard’s or cat’s face with many bodies.

Paul Aizpiri Paul Aizpiri’s unique style is somewhat reminiscent of Munch. The roughness in his brushstroke and use of bold colors, allow each of his characters and situations come to life with raw emotion. Aizpiri continually challenges the conventions of modern and contemporary form with his Post-Expressionist style. Paul Aizpiri was born in 1919 in Paris, France and studied painting at “L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts” also in Paris. Public acknowledgment of his talent began in 1940, and progressed from many exhibitions in countries around the world. He started exhibiting in 1943, his talent appreciated and bolstered by public acceptance, the progress enabled him to have many exhibitions held in various countries around the world. 1956 was the year his path as an artist was altered, that year he met with Foujita, Soutine, Van Dongen, Utillo and Picasso, who greatly influenced his style and work. Since 1963, he has submitted his work to every International Figuration Exhibition as a guest of honor. A likely consequence of growing up in the Basque, he uses vivid Spanish colors that are filled with passion. Aizpiri's passion for nature and families are evident in his artworks. The bold brushstrokes and the bright colored palette he brandishes in his vibrant figurative paintings are symbolic of his joy and satisfaction in life. His recent works are painted poetry filled with a glow of love with such motifs as children, bicycles, airplanes, birds, fish and the sun, flying over the skies of Paris, Saint Tropez and Venice.

Affandi Squeezing paint directly onto the canvas seems best suit Affandi, allowing him to have full artistic expression along with an ability to finish his work quickly. As with other expressionist painters, his work exhibits a distinct rhythm full of emotional intensity. The impact of this emotion is communicated visually depending on the emotional drive of the painter himself. The expressionist painter characteristically has an urgency to simultaneously grab the movement of the moment he wants to describe, along with capturing the textures of the object, a drive that often leads him to work much more passionately compared to the naturalists, the realists, or even the impressionists. Affandi’s works are explosions of paint on canvas, expressing the observed world through pure impulse and energy. He was a very intuitive and emotional painter, and his works were heartfelt expressions. He only painted what he observed and never approached his works from any kind of philosophical or analytical starting point. In the present lot, Affandi has been using vivid colors like red, yellow, light green and white. Affandi’s strong wild lines dominated with white hues represent the bright sunlight showing the strong energy of human life. His former black murky tones have been replaced by a greater part of the canvas being left blank. Lee Man Fong Lee Man Fong was one of a rare artist who received honor by critics and collectors across Asia. As an Oriental artist, Lee man Fong has renewed and transformed Western oil painting by imbuing it with the essence of Chinese ink painting, achieving a mutual identity between subject and object, at the same time vastly opening the restrictions on traditional Chinese painting. In short, he created a unique “Man-Fong style”. The present lot is a female figure posing in nude style, very rare objects and very special as one of his best work produced in the period. Besides his great intense in observing the nature especially animal such as gold fish and doves, women were Lee’s most cherished subject. His figures reflect a wealth of thought and inner content. His portraits excel equally in form and expression, vitality and faithfulness, and rank above works. Lee Man Fong’s portraits are remarkable life-like, fresh and moving and at the same time full of artistic individuality. This resulted from a strict awareness of values and rigorous selectivity.

Yet, his short lifetime has been noted by important works that captured the people’s attention. Some of the works that made in 2000 – 2001 reveal Alit Sembodo keen interest in different theme. As usual for Alit, this painting object gave rise to a sort of serial works. Most of his works demonstrate strong characteristics, narrative and descriptive crowd in all kinds of poses and scenes that filled every corner of the canvas. He never left the canvas empty. The canvas seems full with parade of masses like a colossal theater performance. Perhaps this has become Alit’s concern towards all kinds of social problems amongst the populace. He seems does not merely make social criticism towards the ruling politics, but he only goes to describe the condition in his painting through his own perspective and perception. With his combination of strong drawing techniques and simple colors, Alit’s painting illustrates an image of dramatic atmosphere of the condition.

Srihadi Soedarsono Srihadi is an artist with a deep cultural background. His integrity as a creative was formed through his formal education as well as through his life experiences. There are two important aspects in Srihadi’s paintings. First: the artistic value of color composition, and the second: the philosophical value that reflect the meaning of life, cultural, and social value. The dance is one of Srihadi’s favorite themes. In his paintings of dancers he continues to paint female dancers in the same upright pose that has used in the past. His dance work consist of series of dancers, even so, for Srihadi, each dance has it own particular mood, the gist of which he attempts to capture in his painting. At the same time, dance also offers a panorama of human life in general: it shows the dynamic union between the everyday world of material reality and the world beyond perception, the realm of the material. The merging of spiritual and physical control obtained in dance obviously appeals to the philosophical Srihadi. Some of his figurative paintings, especially the dancers, look deceptively similar, and that the figures have become stereotypes, but one should try to appreciate and study the details and minimal variations. Srihadi pays particular attention to the characteristic of the dancer and the artistic form of the dance. Every dance has its language or vocabulary of movement and type of costume, all of which imbued with philosophical meaning.

279 AFFANDI (Cirebon, 1907 – 1990) Perahu Muncar, 1986 Oil on canvas: 101 x 131 cm Signed and dated, lower right: AF,1986 Provenance: Private collection, Jakarta SGD 162,000 - 185,000 USD 116,640 - 133,200
Affandi never learned to use a palette, dislikes brushes. Instead, he squeezes paint on to his thumb, then smears it around the canvas. He will often spend a week studying a subject, but the actual painting seldom takes longer than 90 furious minutes. 'After about an hour,' he says, 'I usually feel my emotions declining. It's better to stop then. The painting is finished.' A traveling exhibition of Affandi’s works from this era visited European cities including London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris and Rome. Upon his return to Indonesia, Affandi was appointed by the Indonesian government to represent Indonesia in international Biennales exhibitions in Sao Paulo (1953), Venice (1954), and Sao Paulo (1956). Beginning in 1955 Affandi taught at the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts in Yogyakarta. After participating in International exhibitions in Brazil and Italy, Affandi received a 1957 scholarship from the U. S. government to study arts education. He was made an Honorary Professor of Painting by Ohio State University, and in 1974 was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Singapore. He also received the Peace Award from the Dag Hammarskjoeld Foundation in 1977, and the title of Grand Maestro in Florence, Italy. (TIME Magazine, January 12, 1953). Affandi was passionate about his country and a large proportion of his works concern his feelings about the land and its people. Though Affandi only painted what he observed and never approached his works from any kind of philosophical or analytical starting point, he was particularly fond of Bali and Javanese culture. There are some works that use natural landscapes as their subject matter. Affandi especially liked to depict seascapes, or coastal landscapes with fishing boats. However, these works are far from being naturalistic, as they are hardly related to the matter of sky color, as affected by the sunlight.

Born in Padang Panjang, West Sumatra, 1923. He graduated form the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 1951 and continued his study of art and handicrafts in Amsterdam finished in 1953. Mochtar Apin’s naked painting presents paradox to apply the concept of representations. He does not represent reality for conclusion like in the work of landscape and realism. His return of representation exactly deconstructs the concept of representation. All his nude figures in his paintings did mean that he directly bring the model to the location. His nude figure was not a representation at all, in fact, it is only Apin’s imaginary. It is unlikely the culture for Indonesian women posing half naked in public. The reality in the picture is none other than the imaginary reality.

Popo Iskandar Born in Garut, December 17, 1927. Popo Iskandar started painting in 1944. He graduated from the University of Indonesia and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Besides as a painter he is also an art observer and writer. In 1980 he received art award from Indonesian Government. He has participated in many exhibitions in Indonesia as well as overseas. His works were mostly on animal such as chicken, cat, and tiger. Popo’s career started with on-the-spot painting, capturing the concrete life events in the field. Although his early years of painting was influenced by Van Gogh’s style, there was an evidence that he had experimented further with some other styles like cubism, abstract composition, Chinese and Japanese calligraphy and other media or methods like monoprints. We could easily see his tendency to paint certain objects in repetition within the coverage of a single style, relying simply on memory and imagination. The major objects he mostly dealt with were no other than cats, roosters and leopards. These kinds of themes had become Popo’s trademark which he treated in a repetitive and minimalist manner.

Trubus Sudarsono Born in 23 April 1926 in Wates, Yogyakarta. Trubus Sudarsono is well known as an artist who actively commited in Lekra (Lembaga Kebudayaan Rakyat). He only had a short formal education until elementary school. His amazing talent and skill was sharpened through learning time with Affandi and Sudjojono. During revolutionary time in Yogya, he joined Seniman Indonesia Muda (SIM) and then Pelukis Rakyat lead by Hendra Gunawan (1950). He was also one of ASRI lecturers. In 1948, he was arrested and jailed in Netherlands colonial government because he was considered involving with guerrilla activity. Trubus Soedarsono was killed during the purges which followed the aborted communist coup in September, 1966. His oil paintings often featured ethereal, impressionistic images of Indonesian dance and culture. Trubus had mastery in showing people through agile, expressive brush strokes that drew appreciation and recognition around the world. The dancer theme is rather romantic but not realistic, as it appears more expressive and impressionistic. The gesture of the dancer and especially the background, display the artist’s characteristic brush strokes.

Widayat Born in Kutoarjo, Central Java, 1919 - 2002. He studied at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta and Ceramics and Landscape, Nagoya, Japan (1960). He received BKPM award (1953), a cultural award from the Indonesian Government (1972), the Best Biennial Painting, Yogyakarta (1986) and the ASEAN Award, Brunei Darussalam (1993). His works have been shown throughout Indonesia and abroad. He performed his solo exhibitions in Yogyakarta (1983), Jakarta (1985, 1990, 1991, 1992, 2000 and participated in joint exhibition in Japan, Netherlands and United States for KIAS (1990 – 1991). Widayat’s many years in the jungle of Sumatra had a lasting influence on the topics he prefers. During his ten years in Sumatra, he often lived isolated in the jungle with all its beauty and dangers. The lush tropical world of Sumatra made a deep impression on the Javanese painter who was used to the friendly nature of his hometown of Kutoarjo. For many years to come, atmosphere of the forest would be the most important theme in his works. The present lot, perhaps Widayat’s deep concerned about the environment issues of deforestation. The cutting down of forest/ deforestation include conversion of forestland to farms, ranches, or urban use. Trees are cut down to be used or sold as fuel (sometimes in the form of charcoal) or timber, while cleared land is used as pasture for livestock, plantations of commodities and settlements. People use slash-and-burn deforestation to clear the land. Deforestation has contributes to produce flood, haze and also the global warming.
