He took the daily lives of people subjects for his paintings and captured them movingly on canvas in his inimitable style. Though Hendra’s art was, from the very beginning focused towards celebrating common people and their struggle that depicts his deep feeling and irony inspiring perspective of life’s most fundamental issue: freedom and hunger, Hendra also love the land and paint some in his several themes. Hendra later paintings are melancholic and emotional as a result of the hardship that he experienced during his thirteen years in Bandung Kebon Waru prison. Han Snel Born in 1925 in Scheveningen, Holland, Han Snel arrived in Indonesia as a Dutch soldier in 1946. He had a life-long love affair with Bali. Snel immediately fell in love with the island; a love so deep until he marred a local girl, apply for Indonesia citizenship and embrace Balinese Hinduism. He lived in Ubud from 1950 until his death in 1998. Balinese themes are Han Snel’s specialism, in particular figures done in a more or expressionist style: he himself prefers to describe his manner with its very conspicuous, curved lines, as ‘roundism’. In his works, Snel focused his attention on the beauty of Balinese women. His colors were varied and lean towards the primary with contrasting area of dark shading. His visual imageries, subdued colors and fine lines captured the essence of Ubud and the island as a place where serenity reigned and simple people led an honest life.

Chicken, gibbons, herons, carps and squirrels are some of his favourite subjects. Numerous solo and group exhibitions were held in Singapore and around the world. This drawing style has enabled him to produce unpredictable broken stroke on paper. He developed his skill in finger painting, inkand-brush, oil, sketches, abstracts and semi-abstract techniques. Every subject he paints, whether lotuses, gibbons, egrets, monkeys, squirrels, birds, or flowers and trees, is palpably vibrant.

M. Irfan was born in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra 1972. M. Irfan is included in 51 members of the young artists from West Sumatra that recently held a group exhibition under the theme of Panorama. Irfan’s paintings of train series have captivated the people’s interest. He mostly painted in huge size. They portray trains, railways, and fumes which give a sense of darkness. His “trains” series was quite a leap in Irfan’s painting career. They contained Irfan’s dreams, hopes and ideas. ARS Longa is the Latin quote, often rendered in English as Art is long, life is short. It can be interpreted as “art lasts forever, but artists die and are forgotten” (in this use sometimes rendered in the Greek order as “Life is short, Art eternal”). This come to Irfan’s idea to describing how human life span limits all that might be accomplished.

Lee Man Fong During 1952, Lee was quietly developing his art, which focused on thorough observation of life and nature around him. Lee tried to translate the aesthetic and style of Chinese brush painting into oil on canvas. Considering the differences in texture and consistency between ink and oil, Lee tried to direct the effect of an ink brush with his strokes, which is not a simple act. A large part of these works featured animals, such as the chicken, doves, goldfish, storks, and gibbons. As an Oriental artist, Lee man Fong has renewed and transformed Western oil painting by imbuing it with the essence of Chinese ink painting, achieving a mutual identity between subject and object, at the same time vastly opening the restrictions on traditional Chinese painting. Lee Man Fong is famous painter who captures gold fishes in magnificent way. Some gold fishes are swimming freely in the space of an aquarium, still with his essential element by using the light, reflecting the sun’s radiance, Lee success to bring all the goldfishes as a depiction of calmness.

Lee Man Fong Lee Man Fong was born in Canton, China, 1913. He arrived at Singapore at young age then later moved to Jakarta. He has shown great artistic talent since young. He participated in the Association’s First Art Exhibition invited by the head of the Dutch East Indies Associations (1931). Lee Man Fong was a successful commercial artist before engaged in full time painting in 1941. His successful exhibitions in Bandung and Jakarta made him a fast growing artist at that time. He received scholarship from the Dutch government to study painting in Holland (1946). In 1952 he returned to Indonesia and gained more credits as well as acknowledgement. He was officially become a presidential palace’s painter and chief curators of its collection in 1961 and compiled a 5 volume edition of President Sukarno’s art collection. He died in 1988 and remembered as a western vigorous painter and an oriental unique oil painting painter. In Lee Man Fong paintings, light is of prime importance and the subjects are consistently bathed in a luminous glow as presented in this lot. The background, unlike the flat, void spaces of Chinese paintings, is likewise illuminated by an almost mysterious glow of white sunlight. Therefore the subjects, reflecting the sun’s radiance, seem also to be lit from the back, creating the effect of “glowing silhouettes”. As to the Chinese philosophy, Gold fish is believed that the fish can bring rich and prosperity.

Budi Ubrux loves to create contemporary realist artworks by exploring newspaper as a true-lies media. This phenomenon is put into canvas in the form of human being with skin from newspaper. Figures wrapped from top to toe in newspaper appeared suggesting a futuristic imagination of what could happen in our uncertain future. Bandaged, swathed and tied, the faceless sculptural figures are able to lead the imagination in wild proximity. Since then, art observers and collectors became interested in his works. 018 BUDI UBRUX (Yogyakarta, 1968) F1, 2012 Oil on canvas : 115 x 325 cm Signed and dated, lower right: B Ubrux’12 SGD 20,000 - 30,000 USD 14,400 - 21,600

He received a scholarship from the U. S. government to study arts education in 1957, after participating in International exhibitions in Brazil and Italy. He was made an Honorary Professor of Painting by Ohio State University, and in 1974 was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Singapore. He also received the Peace Award from the Dag Hammarskjoeld Foundation in 1977, and the title of Grand Maestro in Florence, Italy. Affandi was passionate about his country and a large proportion of his works concern his feelings about the land and its people. Though Affandi only painted what he observed and never approached his works from any kind of philosophical or analytical starting point, he was particularly fond of Bali and Javanese culture. The chicken seller is one of the many recurring themes of the artist and yet the unique personality of the sitter never fails to captive the viewers. Very often, despite the artist’s apparent focus on the main subject which is the fight of the animals, Affandi is very fond of creating a sense of spontaneity by adding idiosyncratic details such as the feet of the onlooker, or the drinking spectator at the scene. By doing this, he creates a sense of immediacy equivalent to that of a snapshot and yet capturing the last emotion and personality for eternity. A sense of festivity is also conveyed, as the joyous crowd is clearly drinking to the occasion whilst the fighting animal are entangled in a fury of violence that is conveyed, as the joyous crown is clearly drinking to the occasions whilst the fighting animal area entangled in a fury of violent that is conjured by repeat, ` stokes in many colors 48

Samsul Arifin Born in Malang, East Java, 1979, Samsul Arifin's story is a story of a restless soul. He works on his visual creations involving many things and objects. Samsul had always been very much interested in art. His journey in the art world, however, had not been smooth. He started out in Malang, but the town could not facilitate his artistic aspirations and idealism. Eventually he moved to Yogyakarta to study art at the SMSR (the Secondary School for Visual Arts). Now he continues his study at the department of painting of ISI, Yogyakarta. Objects of still life have become recent theme used by young contemporary painters. They sometimes only represent common object that have been familiar with us but never put into account. Objects like eraser or pencil perhaps do not have deep meaning to a person. On the contrary, for Samsul, this object represents what he feels and thinks. They symbolize how modern people get advantage from using very simple and common thing like eraser and pencil. He keeps questioning about the freedom and the limitation of an artist, about art that is ideally free from any tendency. Samsul's works generally tells of morality and ethics, which he continually questions. As one of the artists who begin their career in the year 2000, like his predecessors, Samsul practices the freedom of choosing his artistic media.

Cheong Soo Pieng Cheong Soo Pieng (b.1917, Amoy, China - d. 1st July 1983, Singapore), was one of Singapore’s pioneer modern artists, and a key proponent of the Nanyang style of art. Cheong Soo was a driving force to the development of Modernism in visual art in the early 20th-century Singapore. He was also known for his signature depiction of Southeast Asian indigenous tribal people with elongated limbs and torso, almond-shaped faces and eyes in his paintings. Cheong was born the youngest of seven children in Amoy, China. His parents were neutral to his choice of education, when Cheong took to studying art at in the Xiamen Academy of Fine Art in 1933. In 1936 Cheong graduated and attended Xinhua Academy of Fine Art in Shanghai for further studies, only to have his education cut short with the breakout of the Sino-Japanese War and the school destroyed by Japanese invaders in 1938. Cheong returned to his alma mater to teach art, and pursued his painting passion in watercolours due to scarcity of oil paint materials. In 1942 Cheong held his first solo exhibition of watercolor works. In 1945 Cheong left China for Hong Kong and relocated to Singapore in late 1946 where he would be a lecturer at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts for the next 20 year. In 1955 Cheong Soo Pieng, along with five other artists Chen Wen Hsi, Chen Chong Swee, Lim Hak Tai, Tay Wee Koh, and Suri bin Mohyani were invited to showcase their artworks in England, funded by fellow artist and arts patron Ho Kok Hoe. The exhibition was officially opened by the Duchess of Kent. In 1962, the Government of Singapore awarded Cheong Soo Pieng the Meritorious Service Medal. Cheong died on July 1, 1983 due to heart failure. Besides painting both in the Eastern and Western techniques of Chinese ink and oils, Cheong Soo Pieng also sculpted and crafted metal installations. But it is his Nanyang-style paintings in particular that have received much attention. The techniques used are recognized as a creative blend of West and East, and the subject matter was inspired from his Southeast Asian surroundings hence the term Nanyang or South-Seas style. He was one of the first artists to paint in this theme. Inspiration for this stemmed from a Bali trip in 1952, which he embarked with three others: Liu Kang, Chen Wen Hsi and Chen Chong Swee.

Srihadi Sudarsono Srihadi’s experimentation on the theme of Borobudur takes a long process of attempting to understand the essence of life and nature. The great monument Borobudur is an icon of cultural. Symbolizing the various stages of life, Borobudur is a cultural text as well as an embodiment of human religiosity. As a historical icon shrouded in myths and legends, the text presented by Borobudur is open to various interpretations and reinterpretations depending on the depth of perspective and inner feeling typical of each historical period. Srihadi considers the artistic architectural form of Borobudur set in the surrounding natural environment. As a concrete statement that religious behavior and attitudes are the highest human values, Borobudur is living proof of the hopes and ideals of mankind. When meditating at Borobudur, Srihadi employs the techniques of silent and clean. Such a state of mind is required when a person prays, and this state of mind is similar to the behavioral concept of the Arupadatu at the pinnacle of Borobudur.

As Bernard de Montgolfier puts it, although he paints out of the reality, he is not a realist: “It is the very personal way of BRASILIER to be non-figurative inside figuration.” Lyrical charm, vivid colours, harmonious daring of his simplifying visions, but at the same time fleeting, evocative and sublimated, made his renown exceeds the borders of a country whose grace he is the one to transfigure. His pictural, ceramic and engraved works are joously spreading in Europe, USA, Canada and Japan where his shows are great successes. “by transfiguring life, I would like to build a plastic work that helps to see and to dream.” Andre Brasilier.

Srihadi Sudarsono Srihadi express the essence of classical Javanese dances such as the bedoyo Ketawang as a symbolic definition of life. The slow, gentle, refined movements of the dance inspire a mood of contemplation. With the refined music of the Javanese gamelan accompaniment, the entire dance seems to be a form of meditation, thereby justifying its description as a sacred dance. In philosophical terms, the dance movements have meaning and they symbolize principles of ethnics and aesthetics. They also express the level of sublime spiritual energy of the dancer. Srihadi has explored other aspects of the inner nature of movement besides those of immobility and diffused dynamism. Some lie midway between these two tendencies. He has explored composed movement, such as that practiced in the traditional dance of the Javanese palaces, in particular the Bedoyo Ketawang, which is considered to be the epitome of Javanese refinement. In the paintings on this theme, the fuzzy atmosphere shrouding the figures are gone; rather, the head and limbs are suspended, almost immobile, and drawn with an extreme delicacy, otherwise found only in the artist’s work depicting wayang puppets. Only the cloth moves, slowly drifting along the ground, merging dark violet into black. There is a visual rhythm set up by the inert head and limbs, the color of the headdress, and the casual placement of the hanging white garlands.

Jean Pierre Roc Roussey French artist Jean-Pierre Roc-Roussey uses myths and themes from Neo-Classicism and the Renaissance, mixed with elements from the Middle Ages and Oriental civilisations. His work is mainly focused on women warriors, amazons, Greek goddesses, samurai women or African dancers, creating a new form of exoticism with mysterious realm." His figures are characterized by slim elongated torsos and disproportionate limbs, with a liberal use of rich color and gold leaf. For this series, the artist says he was influenced by Indian miniature paintings and their jewel-toned palette, as well as Mongol imagery including riders and archers. “I usually start with a very small sketch which has the general idea. It’s very simple, but when it’s right I just know it, because all the proportions are already there,” he explains. Roc-Roussey primarily uses a glazing technique to build up the colors, super-imposing layer over layer of transparencies over a darker background.

Born in1956, Kuala Penyu (Sabah). Awang Damit is one of the renowned abstract expressionists in Ma- laysia. After graduating from UiTM in Fine Arts in 1983, he crafted his way into the Catholic University of America to Washington D.C., to obtain Masters in Fine Arts (1989). Awang Damit now lectures in UITM. He has held positions as the Curator of the Art Gallery and Head of the Fine Arts Department before being appointed an Associate Professor in 2000. While lecturing in UiTM, he completed the lauded series Marista (2002) and Iraga (2011). He also has started on his fourth series – Paya Ramahe – with a touch of modernity. His different styles of painting are what make people more attracted to his artwork. Awang Damit belongs to the second generation abstract expressionists in modern Malaysian art. This group widened the scope of their artistic expression turning landscapes and nature into a new set of visual language. In his paintings, everything is reduced to its essential elements, nothing superfluous or unnecessary retained. Colours are essential components. Immersed in a selection of earth colour, the master creates abstract spaces with his signature broad and daring brushstrokes. Awang’s non-representational painting, geometrical forms with diverse lines against subdivided background, is often unique and optimistic in spirit. Awang Damit has held various exhibitions both in groups as well as solo including the Bentuk and Makna by Galeri Seni FSSR (UiTM, 2000) and Intipati Budaya – Satu Sintesis show at the National Art Gallery (Kuala Lumpur, 1995). Awang Damit has also actively involved himself in shows abroad including in China, Taiwan, Japan and London. MASTERPIECE FINE ART - SINGAPORE

Jumaldi Alfi Born in Lintau, July 19, 1973. He studied fine art at Institute Seni Indonesia (ISI), Yogyakarta and graduted in 1999. He actively exhibits solo exhibition or group exhibition. Among them were held in Yogyakarta, Magelang, Gresik, Bali, Jakarta, Singapore, and Berlin Germany. He had received several awards, such as The Best Painting of Institute Seni Indonesia, Yogyakarta and as a finalist of Indonesian Art Award V and X. He formed Kelompok Seni Rupa Jendela, Yogyakarta with other artists that come from the same region, West Sumatra. Jumaldi tends to work in series. Alfi’s works are a mixture of naïve scribbles and meditative pondering. There is no sign of connection that we can use, to gather meaning from the presence of these things and forms. They all seemed to run free, detached, merely as elements. Jumaldi Alfi experiment in using many colors appears rather surprising and interesting. Alfi wishes to be freed from feelings of melancholy and the weight of personal problems about his identity, conflicts and self-sacrifices that clearly dominate and influence his creative ideas. Besides painting figures, Alfi also produced paintings with soothing colors, in which the stillness of stones suspended in the air, the cactus emerging as the symbol of survival and the lotus bringing peace, new hope and new life, are set as tangible metaphors that examine the concepts of meditation – of heaven and earth, and of man within the universe.

Affandi Squeezing paint directly onto the canvas seems best suit Affandi, allowing him to have full artistic expression along with an ability to finish his work quickly. As with other expressionist painters, his work exhibits a distinct rhythm full of emotional intensity. The impact of this emotion is communicated visually depending on the emotional drive of the painter himself. The expressionist painter characteristically has an urgency to simultaneously grab the movement of the moment he wants to describe, along with capturing the textures of the object, a drive that often leads him to work much more passionately compared to the naturalists, the realists, or even the impressionists. Affandi was one of the Indonesian maestros. He was well-known for his typical characteristic of impressionist wild and strong lines. Affandi’s interest in humanity made him learned a lot about the anatomy of human body in the beginning of his career. He had developed his mature style of self-portraits by the early 1950s. “Self Portrait” was created using close subject of his own face. Looking at him-self was believed to be one way to communicate to the universal as well as express personal emotion. Most of his painting during the period of 1980’s has been using vivid colours like red, yellow, light green and bright blue. His former black murky tones have been replaced by a greater part of the canvas being left blank. Affandi felt he no longer had to fill up the whole canvas, so there are many “empty” spaces in his painting. Yet this is not because he was unable to fill the space, he realizes the quality of this emptiness and makes it a part of painting’s structure.

His works captured the life of common people while also conveying a unique, expressionistic and deeply personal vision of the reality he experienced. His paintings become highly original, modern, simple and totally Indonesian expression by observing the Java’s grand landscapes and natural history. Hendra’s work may thus be seen as illustration of a new mythology. The stylized figures, landscapes features and the decorative approach to color are perhaps influenced by Javanese illustration of sign and symbols. Hendra created paintings conveying his great feelings and deepest emotions for his country and people. He inspired his paintings with sympathy, compassion, and affection about common people. Hendra’s people are never passive victims of their faith; they are always depicted as active subjects. Many of his paintings depict the lives of fish seller, fruit seller, and also chicken seller. The present lot was one of the Hendra’s paintings that described the theme of the common people’s daily life. He explored their activity, capturing them movingly on canvas in his inimitable style.

Putu Sutawijaya Putu’s works have been nominated many awards such as one of the 10 best paintings of Philip Morris Art Award in 1999 and granted the Lempad Prize from Sanggar Dewata Indonesia in 2000. He has been performing Solo exhibitions in Bali, Yogyakarta, Jakarta Singapore, Hongkong, Malaysia and America. Various motions and human behavior are the theme he likes most in his paintings. His spontaneous and firm lines expressed his dynamic works using minimal color. Putu’s figures are painted with rhythmic motion and minimal color, and are characterized by his strong lines and brush strokes. Androgynous human figures are represented in motion – dancing, flying, floating – or otherwise completely still in a pose of serene contemplation. His art is, above all, about the individual human condition in a struggle to free itself from the constraints of an overly complex world.

Since 1950-2002 he had participated in numerous painting exhibitions in Indonesia as well as abroad, such as Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Hongkong, Netherlands, Italy, America and Australia. Widayat was said as a maestro after Affandi as published in the book of “Educator and painter” by ISI Yogyakarta 1988. He was also a revolutionary painter, master of gardening and a graphics art. Widayat was the first artist whose exhibition was largely exposed in the Singapore Art Museum, one of the most important museums in Southeast Asia on September 2007 (held in two months). According to Prof. Soedarso Sp MA, Widayat’s artistic works can be levelled with the works of Henri Rousseau (a France surrealist artist) who has been his great orientation. “Kera-kera di Candi Tua” was a spiritual record over Ta Prohm temple, the world largest temple complex in Ankor Wat, Cambodia. Here, Widayat described the magnificent hundred-years-old trees on the temple founded in the 13th century. This painting was one of Widayat’s best works which not merely described the decorative element but also magical elements called “Decora-Magic”. This work showed his strongest characteristic (aura) that contained the passion to decorate through the detail ornaments of the old tree bark. Widayat’s work were often appreciated with high price in several fine arts auctions. The painting “Menonton Sepak Bola di Atas Pohon” (1981), 130 x 110 cm was sold SGD 120.000 (Sotheby’s Singapore 9 October 2008). “Topeng-topeng” (1976), 100 x 150 cm was hammered SGD 252.000 (Sotheby’s Singapore 16 April 2006). Srihadi Sudarsono Srihadi’s works in the mid-70s centered in the search to the essence of Javanese philosophical value. During this period his excavation is more spiritual, leading to the intensive self retrospective towards the mystical union with the divine, especially especially through the understanding of the nature of the “Presence” (Ada) "sing ana, ana ora, ora sing ana, ana". The transformation of this focus is translated in the themes which rooted in style and variety. It could be visualized as portraits, horizons, puppets, mountains, Balinese temples, Borobudur, etc. The goal is to achieve a contemplative symbiosis between self and subject, as a vehicle for the unification of self and the Divine. His works are reflected in simpler and full of meditative spirit. Nonetheless to say, Srihadi’s works of the 70’s were an attempt to penetrate the inner experience of “manunggaling kawulo Gusti” the true goal of the Javanese people.

Theo Meier Born in 1908 in Basle Switzerland, Meier, like the city in which he grew up, was fortunate to avoid the hardships of war which quickly overtook much of Europe. From Switzerland to the South Pacific, from Bali to Thailand, Theo Meier's life was as varied and exotic as his artistic output, his character as colorful as the oils with which he painted. Thailand has brought serenity to Theo Meier that made an important contribution to the artist’s welldeserved fame. In mid 1995, he borrowed the artistic mode of the German Anselm Keifer and the British Francis Bacon. Later, he tried to develop his own style starting to study with his own body and face in various poses and expression in realistic rendering as his means to convey socio-cultural issues in cynical, ironical and parody atmospheres. Suwage’s artistic explorations have as the basic photographic images that he develops with his sensitiveness and manual skills in drawing, adding support from digital manipulation, to produce images. His works illustrate how the constructed image of Western avant-garde art has been inspirational, through “museum without walls”, to the culture of the world’s modern art. Suwage’s mode of appropriation is by borrowing iconic imageries as his reference, to serve the metaphors for values actively working between love and hate, amazement and derision at once, in parodying, and so on.

Arie Smit Arie Smit is an artist who loves natural beauty and Balinese culture in the form of imaginative painting, painting that express the pure soul of an adventurer, a natural devotee of tropical sunlight. Arie Smit’s painting show breath-taking landscapes, relaxing youths, colorful tropical gardens, glittering seascapes, and quiet temples that evoke a sense of wander. Hindu temples and shrines are integral to Bali life and as such are a common theme in Smit’s work. It is typical of his work as it depicts community life in rural Bali, his most favoured subject matter. Arie Smit (born Adrianus Wilhelmus Smit in 1916) a Dutch-born Indonesian painter has been captured with Bali ever since his arrival in 1956. Smit celebrates the tropical beauty and wonder with presenting the essence of light filtering through the tropical plants, leaves and trees. The use of colour is sophisticated. Red is mixed with purples, oranges, blues and yellow to suggest a temple basking in the sun’s glow. The vibrant colour combination exudes vitality and exuberance yet the mood imbued is peaceful and harmonious. Arie Smit is best known for his paintings of fertile rice fields, vast valley and mountain ranges, temple courtyards and monumental gateways, and festive temple processions of Bali. Arie’s landscapes often go beyond the scenes of nature. Landscape, Hills and Trees is not a mere rendition of the rolling green terrain of the valley. MASTERPIECE FINE ART - SINGAPORE

Heri Dono It is already widely known how Heri Dono works with various visual resources and methods known in the realm of popular culture – coming from both foreign and local cultural institutions – ranging from comics, animation film, wayang puppetry, and through various skills in material processing, craft, performing art, also popular music – he works on and presents in his various art works. Many people see that Heri Dono’s painting has eventually come to the phase of “just repeating things”. Perhaps such judgment comes because people do not try to know and comprehend the central idea that provides the main energy driving Heri Dono to keep painting. The central idea is easily identifiable from Heri Dono’s own remark on “why he paints” or “what painting means” to him as an artist. His painting is like a journal on various issues. Being a journal, a diary, it may concern anything. But everything there is personal in nature. The way he paints, technically speaking, as well as his language of expression, maintain his characteristic hitherto known: Heri Dono’s “handwriting” and “idiolect”. The figures and beings filling the field of his canvas keep on traversing, somersaulting, their round eyes popping, mouths grinning or laughing or unclosed or opening widely to show protruding lines of teeth or canines. Those figures and various beings seem so familiar with violence. They are often present with weapons inserted here and there on their bodies. This is coupled with organs, or parts of the body, that can extend to reach and grab anything with pointed claws, or spurred heels. Awards: 2002 2nd Annual Enku Grand Awards, Gifu Prefectural Government, Japan 2000 Unesco Prize for the International Art Biennale, Shanghai, China
