•MINISTER OPENS DOORS TO HOSPITAL
Better infrastructure and service delivery
On Monday the Western Cape Health Minister, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, officially opened the newly upgraded, state of the art Vredenburg Hospital in the Saldanha Bay Municipal area. This facility is one of several in the West Coast District that received upgrades over the past two years, including Louwville, Langebaan, Velddrif, Porterville and Clanwilliam. This newly upgraded hospital gives effect to the Healthcare 2030 aim of providing highquality health facilities at district hospital level. The upgrades to Vredenburg Hospital forms part of a revitalisation process to improve the infrastructure and service delivery in this community. Vredenburg Hospital was identified with having a need for additional services because of the growing population in the broader community. All the additions were done in phases, and is
now concluded at a cost of over R 172 000 000. “It is important for us as a government to ensure that the healthcare package offered in our facility suits the need of our communities, and therefore we constantly have to expand our services. The upgrade of the Vredenburg Hospital is in direct response to the community`s needs and that is why we pride ourselves in what we offer our patients. We continuously strive to offer the best services to all our clients in the best possible facilities,” said Minister Mbombo. Upgrades at the hospital include: Facilities for patients – theatre unit, paediatrics unit, rehabilitation unit, psychiatric unit. Administrative or servicing functions – administration unit, procurement unit, admissions unit, laboratory.
Hospital services – kitchen, workshop, refuse, mortuary, electrical & mechanical plant rooms. “Yes we are under enormous pressure in terms of our finances. We dealt with a drought and water crisis, our aging infrastructure, unfunded mandates and statutory requirements, to name a few. “But we are here today because we listened to the people of the West Coast. We are giving you an upgraded hospital, with better services and a state of the art facility, which you can be proud of. This is the community`s asset. I hope the people of Vredenburg and the West Coast takes pride in it and treasure this asset. “To our staff, thank you for all your hard work and I hope that you will continue to serve the community with passion and dedication,” said Minister Mbombo.
