•FIRST OF ITS KIND FOR SALDANHA BAY
Bike engines roar on new BMX track The residents of Louwville will soon be able to make use of their very own BMX track. This after Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, visited the site on Wednesday, 17 April and found that construction was nearly complete. The track was funded by DCAS and the Saldanha Bay Municipality. At the handover of the facility Minister Marais said, “It has become an absolute highlight of my days in office when we as sport stakeholders join together to increase development and participation in sport in the Western Cape, particularly in our rural areas. Today’s launch of this new BMX track facility in Louwville is one such auspicious occasion. “The provisioning of key facilities such as this new BMX track is a critical component of the South African sports development continuum. Providing sport facilities create an enabling environment for local, district, regional, provincial, national and even international sport events to take place with the aim of developing sporting talent at different levels.” When completed, the track is expected to cost between R120 000 and R180 000. It is oval in shape and features several berms and hills. Similar tracks have already been opened in Stellenbosch and Worcester. Funding was also provided for similar track in the Drakenstein Municipal area. DCAS provides sport and recreation opportunities to communities across the Western Cape to increase mass participation, skills development and talent identification.
The Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport of the Western Cape Government visited the almost completed BMX track in Louwville just before the Easter weekend. She is standing here with councillors, municipal officials as well as Mayor Marius Koen of the Saldanha Bay Municipality and District Mayor Harold Cleophas of the West Coast District Municipality, who attended as supporting guest. Minister Marais also paid a visit to the Transnet Saldanha Super 8 Easter Rugby Tournament on the last day of the event.
