Rice and fish! For breakfast!
Breakfast is rice and fish.
So I like the people here, but I don’t like the food.
And they are very polite. As all Japanese people seem to be so far.
They are very quiet people. They don’t ask much questions, they just listen.
(Not as nice as you of course
Don says:
My guest parents, Mare and Aki, seem quite nice.
▪ I suppose … I wonder how school will be here. How is home?
Elias says: My luggage did not, but apart from that everything is OK so far.
I arrived this morning.

London is wonderful! This is my first time in Europe and I really, really like it! So far I have visited Brussels and Barcelona in four days. Today and tomorrow I am in London and then I have five days to see Amsterdam and Paris. I can’t wait to see the Eifel tower for my 18th birthday. And at the same time I want this to last forever!

Identify people by their ears
Read the article and answer the questions. You can use the internet. Computers can identify people by their ears If you’ve watched any spy movies, then you’ll know that security systems can recognize people by looking at things such as their fingerprints, handprints, faces and irises. Well, you may soon be able to add ‘ears’ to that list. Scientists from the University of Southampton’s School of Electronics and Computer Science work on a computer program that identifies ears. So far they have a 99.6 percent success rate. Unit 1 People are strange when you are a stranger
9
They use ears because their unique structure doesn’t change as the person gets older, they aren’t affected by facial expressions, and you can always find them on the same place: against the side of the head. The computer program can use even the hair in ears to identify them as your ears. From: www.gizmag.com
•
In what kind of movies can you see many security systems?
•
What university does research about ears and security?
•
Why do they use the ear?
•
What else can you use to identify people apart from the things mentioned in this article? __________________________________________________________________________________________

So, one of the Englishmen walks over to the Irishman, taps him on the shoulder, and says, ‘Hey, I hear your St. Patrick was a drunken loser.’ ‘Oh really, hmm, didn’t know that.’ Puzzled, the Englishman walks back to his buddies. ‘I tell him St. Patrick was a loser, and he doesn’t care.’ The second Englishman remarks, ‘You just don’t know how to set him off ... watch and learn.’ So, the second Englishman walks over to the Irishman, taps him on the shoulder and says, ‘Hey, I hear your St. Patrick was lying, cheating, idiotic, low-life scum!’ ‘Oh really, hmm, didn’t know that.’ Shocked beyond belief, the Englishman goes back to his buddies. ‘You’re right. He’s unshakable!’ The third Englishman remarks, ‘Boys, I’ll really tick him off ... just watch.’ So the third Englishman walks over to the Irishman, taps him on the shoulder and says, ‘I hear St. Patrick was an Englishman!’ ‘Yeah, that’s what your buddies were trying to tell me.’

I‘d love to visit Ireland one day. You must. It is really beautiful. What do you do in Japan? I am studying to be an architect. Really? How interesting! How do you find Japan? Are you enjoying it here? Oh yes I am, very much indeed. I am making a lot of good friends and even the food is not that bad. Well. Can I get you a coffee? Yes, please. I ‘d love one.

the weather your shoes your meal yesterday evening
36a Read the text. Underline the stereotypes. Englishness English people complain about everything. But if faced with a poor meal in a restaurant, they’re too polite to say anything. Politeness is a habit. You need to include ‘please’, ‘thank you’ and ‘sorry’ as many times as possible in the most basic conversation. Here’s a conversation you might hear in a shop: - Could I have a pound of bananas, please? * Certainly. - Thank you. * That’s £1 please. - Thank you, here you are. * Thank you. Here’s your change. Do you need a bag?

-
Oh, yes, please. Sorry, I forgot to bring one. Thank you. * Thank you, goodbye. What do you think these sentences mean? Keep yourself to yourself. Mind your own business. Interestingly, there’s no equivalent* word for privacy in French, Spanish or Italian. The English can be suspicious of anything foreign and don’t integrate* easily when they go to other countries. This is why in Spain you find English pubs and cafés serving a full English breakfast and fish and chips. And they don’t see the need to speak a language other than English. Unfortunately, they are usually proved to be right. The English have always had a reputation for bad behaviour when they visit other countries. They get drunk and get into fights wherever they go. So what’s positive about the English? They have a great sense of humour. Just think of Mr Bean and Fawlty Towers. And they try to help you when they can see you have a problem. And they are usually on time. Only three good points? Is that all? Well, it is typically English to be self-critical and to see the negatives. Perhaps it has something to do with the weather. equivalent: gelijkwaardig integrate: integreren, deel uitmaken van iets

Study abroad is the best way to learn a language. There is no better and more effective way to learn a language than to live in a culture that speaks the language you are learning. You’re surrounded by the language on a daily basis. Language learning happens most quickly this way. Study abroad gives you chances to travel. You can use weekends and holidays to make (short) trips. You are often in a completely different continent, closer to places you can otherwise not visit. Study abroad lets you get to know another culture first-hand. Cultural differences are more than just differences in language, food, appearances, and personal habits. Students who experience cultural differences personally can come to really understand where other cultures are coming from. Study abroad will help you develop skills and give you experiences a classroom setting will never give. You can discover new sides and strengths of yourself, solve new problems and learn from it. Study abroad means you can make friends around the world. You will meet not only natives to the culture in which you are studying, but also other international students who are as far from home as yourself. Study abroad helps you to learn about yourself. Students who study abroad return home with new ideas and perspectives about themselves and their own culture. The encounter with other cultures makes students see their own culture through new eyes. Study abroad widens your worldview. Students who study abroad return home with a lot of information about other cultures and peoples. Study abroad gives you the opportunity to break out of your routine. Study abroad is likely to be very unlike what you are used to doing. You may become familiar with an entirely new academic system and you will have the chance to take courses not offered in your country. Study abroad gives more employment opportunities. An employer sees a student who has studied abroad as self-motivated, independent, and able to cope with diverse problems and situations. Your experience will set you apart from the majority of other job applicants. Study abroad can enhance the value of your degree. While abroad, you can take subjects you can’t take in your home country. And studying abroad gives your language skills a boost.
