An American in London

Unit 1

A busy day 1

Do you remember Arthur? He is an American student who lives in London. Of course, Arthur speaks English but did you know that there is a difference between the English language in Great Britain and in America? For some things they have different words: English people say ‘trousers’, Americans say ‘pants’. Sometimes they use the same words with different spelling. For example, in Great Britain they write ‘mum’ but in America they write ‘mom’. Take a look at Arthur’s schedule. What does he write when he means ‘mother’?

Read the text. Arthur arrives on time at the College of London. He goes to the office of the Dean of Studies (DoS) for his interview.

Knock at the door. DoS

Enter!

Arthur

Good morning, sir. I’m Arthur. I have an interview with you now.

DoS

Oh yes, you’re the American. Or a Yankee, as we call you. (laughs)

Arthur

Yes, I am.

DoS

Well, come in. Sit down.

Arthur

Thank you, sir.

DoS

I’m Mr Smith. How long have you been here now?

Arthur

I arrived last week.

DoS

What do you think of London?

Arthur

It’s a big city. Always busy.

DoS

Yes, it is a bit busy at times. What do you think of the weather?

Arthur

Very cold!

DoS

But it’s still summer! I thought it was quite warm. Where do you come from exactly?

Arthur

I’m from California, San Francisco.

DoS

Well, that explains a lot! How hot is it there?

Arthur

It’s an average of 28 degrees Celsius, but very often it is even hotter.

DoS

That is hot indeed! Well, you’ll have to buy an extra sweater if you want to be warm! (laughs)

Arthur

I already have.

DoS

Let’s get down to business. You want to do business studies here at college.

Arthur

Yes, sir.

DoS

Well, I don’t think that’s a problem. But I do have a suggestion for you: We would advise you to attend lessons in a secondary school for a month, so you can understand how an English school works.

Arthur

That sounds okay with me. Which school should I go to?

DoS

I have already arranged a meeting for you! You can go across the street to St Martin-in-theFields Secondary School. Ask for Mr Pink.

Arthur

Mr Pink?

DoS

Yes, Mr Pink. He’s the headmaster. If he isn’t there, ask for Mrs Brown. She is the deputy head.

Arthur

Mrs Brown? Ok, thank you. It sounds like a colourful school.

DoS

Very funny. Don’t forget: college starts on the first of October. Be sure to come by again for your lesson schedule.

Arthur

Okay. Thank you, sir. Nice meeting you.

DoS

The pleasure was all mine!

Mrs Brown

It’s fighting with a thin sword.

Arthur

That sounds dangerous!

It isn’t, trust me. We try not to kill our pupils. (smiles)

Arthur

Mrs Brown

Let’s carry on. You have IT on Thursday and Friday. Both during the third and fourth period. Then you have French on Monday in the sixth period.

Skype date It is now four o’clock, and Arthur is in his flat in front of his computer. He is going to skype with his parents who are in the United States.

29a

What do you think Arthur will say to his parents? Listen to the conversation. Arthur

Hello mom!

Mum

Hi little Arthur

Arthur

Come on, mom. I’m not little anymore.

Mum

You will always be my little boy!

Arthur

A little boy wouldn’t go to London on his own.

Mum

Well tell me, what have you been doing today?

Arthur

I did a lot today.

Mum

Excuse me? You’re breaking up. You said you did a shot? A shot of what? Whiskey?

Arthur

No. I said I did a lot.

Mum

Oh okay. What did you do?

Arthur

I went to my new school.

Mum

Pardon? You sent your blue skull? What are you saying? Which skull?

Arthur

I’m afraid our connection is not that good. Wait, I’ll try to reconnect. Can you

understand me now? Mum

Yes that’s much better. Well, here’s your father.

Arthur

I know, mom. It’s Skype. I can see both of you on my computer.

Dad

Hello son.

Arthur

Hello dad.

Dad

So what’s up?

Arthur

I had a busy day.

Dad

I’m sorry you’re breaking up again. Did you say that you’re a bit gay?

Arthur

No, dad! I HAD A BUSY DAY.

Dad

Ok. You don’t have to yell at me.

Arthur

I have to go now, dad. I will send you an email with some more news. This skype connection is not working.

Dad

What did you say: you are going to send me a toenail? What for?

Arthur

Never mind. Say hi to mom. Love you. Bye.

Dad

Ok, goodbye son. Don’t bother sending that toenail though. I think that’s disgusting.

In this email to his parents Arthur writes the following dates to describe his story. Dear Mum & Dad ...

In America, people write the dates differently. First they write the month, then the day and finally the year.

On 8/8 I arrived in Paris for a short visit to the town and to meet up with auntie Christine. I left 4 days later for Belgium because I wanted to try the Belgian Chocolates and to see Manneke Pis (imagine they made a statue of a boy peeing – strange Belgians). I arrived in Britain at the end of the month. On 9/2 I went to the Dean of Studies at the College of London, and they suggested I go to secondary school for a month. I start in St-Martin-in-the-Fields on 9/9. I have met some very nice people on that day, and I’ll be going to a party on 10/1. I can’t wait! Well, I have to go now. Say hello to the family during Patriot Day on 9/11. I will be thinking of you! ... Love Arthur
