Editor’s Letter Thanks to Ad-Astral Aviation and Hertz Truck Rentals for their magazine distribution support. D&D Australasia magazine is now available in every seat pocket on every Ad-Astral Aviation plane and in all Hertz truck, bus, 4WD and mine spec vehicles hired in Western Australia. China is Australia’s largest trading partner with two-way trade worth around AU$160 billion. With the recent and recurring poor Chinese economic growth data and an oversupply, iron ore prices are dramatically falling. To add to this, the China government has announced it will limit credit to steel mills that are not performing well. This limits their ability to buy iron ore, resulting in a squeeze on demand. The China government has also ordered many steel mills to shut down, as part of its crackdown on pollution.
LEN FRETWELL Publisher / Managing Editor Digging & Drilling Australasia and Race&Restore Magazine
The big three miners have a combined capacity of more than 1.1 billion tons of iron ore annually and notwithstanding the sluggish market, several hundred million more tons will be added to the surplus which could drive prices even closer to the out-of-pocket cash cost of production, in the next few years. There is no doubt that these are difficult times for the iron ore industry but fortunately for the nation, China is not our only trading partner and iron ore is not our only commodity. Singapore is Australia’s 5th largest trading partner with two-way trade worth AU$27 billion and India’s twoway trade with Australia has more than doubled in value from AU$6.8 billion in FY2003-04 to AU$14.8 billion in FY2013-14. There is a lot of potential to grow our trade with our neighbours in the Asia Pacific and India. It was reassuring to see that the Australian Minister for Trade and Investment, Andrew Robb recently visited India, building further momentum toward the conclusion of an Australia-India Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) being the key objective. India is one of the world’s fastest growing economies and has recently built 24 new coal-fired power plants and are planning to build another 455 new plants. There are now 1,200 coal-fired power plants in planning across 59 countries, including 363 in China and this will definitely create a stronger and long lasting demand for coal. Premier and State Development Minister Colin Barnett also recently visited India and Singapore to further advance Western Australia’s trade and investment relationship with both countries. The State’s total trade with India was valued at AU$1.9 billion in 2014 and Singapore is WA’s fourth largest trading partner, with total trade valued at nearly AU$10 billion in 2014. It is widely known that iron ore and coal are our largest exports but what is less commonly known is that LNG now looks to become Australia’s third largest export. And Australia could also become the world’s largest LNG producer, in the near future. After Qatar and Malaysia, Australia is currently the third largest LNG producer in the world and Australia has more new LNG plants currently under construction than any other country. The new projects, due to be completed by June, 2018 will add 61.4 million tonnes of LNG capacity, bringing Australia’s total to 85.8 million tonnes. When plants under construction are added to current capacity and if there are no new players on the LNG export scene, Australia will lead the world with 85.8 million tonnes. Qatar, the current leader in LNG exports, will be second at 77.7 million tonnes and Indonesia third at 36.3 million tonnes. Australia’s current contracts for LNG throughout Asia and India are for enormous volumes and are locked in for twenty years. It seems that good news in the energy and resources sector is often overlooked by mainstream media. We are always looking for interesting energy and resource sector news and innovation content and I invite energy and resources industry members to contact me directly with any news that may be of interest to our readers. I look forward to receiving your feedback. Best regards

Strength of Australian oil and gas industry reflected in highly successful AOG 2015 Australia’s largest resource industry event has defied the “gloom and doom” surrounding the global oil and gas sector to post what industry insiders have described as the most successful show in its 34 year history. Organisers have been thrilled with the flood of attendees who have visited the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre (PCEC) to meet with a record 620 exhibiting companies from 25 countries at the Australasian Oil & Gas Exhibition and Conference (AOG) for the past three days. “This has been a tremendous week,” AOG Event Director at Diversified Communications, Bill Hare, said. “Despite all the forecasts that the mood would be down at AOG this year because of the crash in crude prices, the feeling around

the Convention centre has been very upbeat. “We have had a very constant stream of visitors on the Exhibition floor, while the conference, special industry lunches and networking events have been really well attended. The positive feedback we have received across the board has been very pleasing. “And there certainly wasn’t a feeling of doom and gloom amongst those that were kicking up their heels at our AOG dinner last night. “But the real proof of the success of this year’s event has been the very strong interest from companies wanting to come back again next year,” Mr Hare said. The AOG Event Director noted that there were many highlights
during the week that have helped make AOG 2015 the most successful in its long history. “Alongside the record number of companies and the new level of international participation, we have received tremendous feedback on the content of the conference, in particular the new FLNG stream. “We have also seen our special Timor-Leste industry luncheon create newspaper headlines around Australia, a panel discussion on women in oil and gas we have helped a lot of people to become better informed about critical issues such as FIFO mental health,” Mr Hare said. One of the leading events on the annual global oil and gas event calendar, AOG will be returning to Perth from February 24-26, in 2016.
“We are already looking forward to it and I am glad to say that many of the people who have been at AOG are feeling the same way,” Mr Hare said.

GOVERNMENT COMMITS ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR GBR REEF TRUST The Commonwealth Government will commit an additional $100 million in new funding for the Reef Trust to support the implementation of the historic Reef 2050 Long Term Sustainability Plan for the protection and management of the Great Barrier Reef. The Commonwealth Government will commit an additional $100 million in new funding for the Reef Trust to support the implementation of the historic Reef 2050 Long Term Sustainability Plan for the protection and management of the Great Barrier Reef. Last year, the Coalition delivered on its commitment to establish a $40 million Reef Trust which has already funded important work to protect the Great Barrier Reef. The additional $100 million in funding for the Reef Trust announced on March 21 will be used to tackle key challenges facing the Reef, in particular projects to improve water quality. This will now lift the Reef Trust to $140 million in value, with the overall investment by governments in the Reef exceeding $2 billion over the next decade. The work that’s being undertaken to improve water quality builds on the Commonwealth Government’s total and permanent ban on the dumping of capital dredge spoil in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. There will be zero capital disposal anywhere in the entire 345,000sq km Marine Park. Together, the 345,000 sq km Commonwealth ban (100% of the Marine Park and 99% of the total ban) and the 3000 sq km Queensland ban (1% of the total ban) will cover 100% of the World Heritage area. “Upon coming to office, we inherited five major proposals from Labor to dispose of dredge spoil in the Marine Park. We have reduced this to zero and are now putting a ban in law,” MP Greg Hunt wrote on the website. The Commonwealth Government also announced the appointment of the Commonwealth Chief Scientist, Professor Ian Chubb, to chair an independent scientific panel to advise on funding priorities for the $140 million Reef Trust to assist with qualitative monitoring on achieving targets under the Reef 2050 Long Term Sustainability Plan as well as the overarching vision to improve the Outstanding Universal Value of the Reef every decade between now and 2050. “There are already positive signs. The quality of water entering the Reef is improving. “We have achieved reductions of 11 per cent in sediment, more than 10 per cent in nitrogen, 28 per cent in pesticides and a 16 per cent reduction in dissolved inorganic nitrogen running into the Reef lagoon,” Hunt added. The Reef 2050 Long Term Sustainability Plan draws together all the work, expertise and science critical to managing the Reef for the next three decades and beyond.

INPEX Begins Ichthys Work has begun on the 889 km gas export pipeline for the INPEX-operated Ichthys LNG Project, connecting Blaydin Point in the Northern Territory, Australia to the Ichthys Field in the Browse Basin, located off the north-west coast of Australia. This follows the arrival of the 188 m Saipem-operated SEMAC-1 semi-submersible pipe lay barge at the Darwin Outer Port Limits. Managing Director of the Ichthys LNG Project Louis Bon said that the SEMAC-1 was scheduled to start the 164 km shallow-water pipe lay component of the gas export pipeline installation in the coming weeks, with work to include laying the first 18 km section of 42 inch diameter pipe through Darwin Harbor from the Middle Arm location. “The gas export pipeline will deliver gas and some condensate from our offshore central processing facility to the Ichthys LNG Project onshore facilities at Blaydin Point near Darwin so that it can be processed for export,” Mr. Bon said.
Offshore work: Saipem’s Castorone deep-water pipe lay vessel has started laying the deep-water section of the Ichthys gas export pipeline
Shallow Water Pipe Lay
“The shallow water pipe lay work means we are starting to physically connect our home base in Darwin to the Ichthys Field where our semi-submersible offshore facilities will be permanently moored for the life of the Project.” Working from east to west in Darwin Harbor, the SEMAC-1 will first feed pipe to the project’s landfall site for a 3 km shore pull, which will enable the vessel to connect the offshore section of the pipeline to the onshore section. The SEMAC-1 is scheduled to be in Darwin Harbor for about four weeks, with the shallow-water pipe lay scheduled to take about 11 weeks. Once complete, SEMAC-1 will transfer work to Saipem’s deep-water installation vessel, Castorone, which will lay the remaining 718 km of pipe to the Ichthys Field. The Ichthys LNG Project’s equity interests include INPEX (63.445 per cent), TOTAL (30 per cent), CPC (2.625 per cent), Tokyo Gas (1.575 per cent), Osaka Gas (1.2 per cent), Chubu Electric (0.735 per cent), and Toho Gas (0.42 per cent).

and the Australian subsidiaries of Tokyo Gas, Osaka Gas, Chubu Electric Power and Toho Gas. Gas from the Ichthys Field, in the Browse Basin offshore Western Australia, will undergo preliminary processing offshore to remove water and raw liquids, including condensate. The gas will then be exported to the onshore processing facilities in Darwin via an 889km pipeline. The Ichthys LNG Project is expected to produce8.4 million tonnes of LNG and 1.6 million tonnes of LPG per annum, along with approximately 100,000 barrels of condensate per day at peak. Detailed Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) of the Ichthys LNG Project is ongoing and production is scheduled to commence by the end of 2016. With an expected operational life of at least 40 years, the Ichthys LNG Project offers rare multi-generational opportunities to communities, economies, businesses, energy markets and its workforce.
Worth your weight in iron ore most important thing to come out of a mine is the miners. We are all worth our weight in iron ore, but sometimes we just need someone to remind us. There’s a neat YouTube video that sums this up really well. The video takes the idea of $5 for 5 minutes of our viewing time. No matter what we do to a $5 note - crumple it up, drop it in dirt and fold it – it’s still worth $5 to us. Its value hasn’t lessened.
People outside the mining sector may think of us miners as sturdy, strong individuals, but insiders know we’re not superheroes. We’re just as likely to feel ground down as anyone outside the industry when events conspire to challenge us. There’s no escaping the frustrating, irritating and annoying challenges that we each have to deal with every day, as well as the much bigger, more demanding events that sometimes come our way. When we’re neglecting our own physical and mental wellbeing, it’s easy to feel crushed and crumpled by events and by decisions that don’t work out as we hoped. A feeling of worthlessness is selfperpetuating, as it’s at these times that thoughts creep in about being good enough. You know, thoughts along the lines of not being clever enough, confident enough, wealthy enough, funny enough, thin enough, and so on. I’ve noticed during my years as a mentor in the mining industry that many people don’t place a high value their own wellbeing or personal time. The truth is, the
And we’re the same at that $5 note: whatever happens to us and what decisions we make, we are still worthwhile. Our value never diminishes. It’s who we are that counts, not what we do or how much we know, who we know or where we live. But like everything worthwhile, learning to value ourselves, warts and all, takes persistence. It’s not something that just happens. That’s why having people to support us is so important. Giving someone five minutes of our time can make a massive difference to their wellbeing. Just asking if they are okay and listening for a few minutes creates a connection that boosts our sense of self-worth.
motto many times when mentoring people new to mining as well as those with industry experience. There’s a lot of trust involved in a mentoring partnership so you need to be open to hearing things you may not always like. That’s because a good mentor empowers you to think differently. A mentor gives you perspective. Having a mentor gives you access to someone who’s on your side but not involved. With a mentor barracking for you, it’s easier to make things happen for yourself, to achieve a greater balance and to learn to shake off self-doubt. And importantly, a mentor will help you to learn to trust yourself – to draw on your instinct, which is very powerful. Fortunately, there are many opportunities in the mining industry to find a suitable mentor nowadays, and having a mentor is a key reason for the success of many in the industry. All it takes is an online search and a conversation to get started.
A mentor can be really helpful with this, too. Mentoring is not life coaching or counselling. And it’s not just about setting career goals. It’s about fostering talent, confidence and motivation so people can enjoy a life that gives them value and self-worth. When I’m mentoring, I bring together my 3 Cs: Commitment, Contribute and Collaborate. I have used this

Government of Western Australia
Ministerial Statement
Hon Bill Marmion MLA Minister for Mines and Petroleum
WA leads push to build Afghan mining future • Perth hosts inaugural business summit • Partnership agreement extends ties Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Marmion has applauded Afghanistan’s determination to develop its resources sector in the face of decades of political turmoil and armed conflict. “Despite damage during the fighting following the withdrawal of the Soviets in 1989, and disruption during the Taliban rule, Afghanistan’s Geological Survey is now getting back on its feet,” Mr Marmion said as he opened the Australia Afghanistan Business Council’s inaugural Perth Mining Summit today. The Minister told an audience of Australian and international delegates that included Afghanistan’s Ambassador to Australia, Nasir Andisha, that the survey’s staff continued to show great courage. “Australia has been a wartime ally and will continue to be Afghanistan’s friend as the country rebuilds its economy,” he said. “Western Australia is our nation’s resources powerhouse, and I am confident our regulatory and industry experience will help guide positive mining development in Afghanistan.” A partnership agreement signed between Australian and Afghanistan in May 2012 committed WA to helping the country sustainably manage its natural resources. Mr Marmion said Afghanistan’s challenges in developing a strong mining industry included creating a robust and transparent regulatory framework, overcoming the lack of infrastructure, and reliance on port facilities in neighbouring countries. The Minister singled out Western Australia’s use of State agreements between government and industry as a way to overcome infrastructure and isolation obstacles. “State Agreement provisions can only be changed by mutual consent, so they provide greater investor certainty for projects, security of tenure, and reduction of sovereign risk,” he said. Mr Marmion also highlighted the benefits of encouraging exploration that could lead to mines and jobs, citing the recent review of WA’s Exploration Incentive Scheme, that showed a tenfold economic return to the State.
Fact File • A 2011 report estimated the value of Afghanistan’s reserves of natural resources including copper, iron ore, lithium at up to US$3 trillion

Marshall Islands Discussions on Deep Sea Minerals The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), with the assistance of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC)–European Union (EU) Deep Sea Minerals Project, has started public consultations on deep sea minerals. These consultations are with a particular emphasis on the draft national Deep Sea Minerals Policy and Seabed Management Bill, which will be submitted to the RMI cabinet in June, 2015. Government representatives, national agencies, the private sector, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), churches, members of parliament, the Council of Iroij and communities took part in the consultations, which were held in Majuro and Ebeye between 22 and 24 April, 2015. The main objective of these consultations was for the government to present the vision, goals and objectives of the draft national Deep Sea Minerals Policy and in the contents of the Seabed Management Bill.

This was also a chance for the government to raise awareness of the opportunities for the country to engage with the deep sea minerals industry, with the view of discussing alternative sources of revenue that will be used for the well-being of the people. These consultations highlight the government’s commitment to ensuring public participation and transparency, and addressing the concerns of all stakeholders. “We would like to applaud the RMI government’s effort in facilitating an open and inclusive process for its new Deep Sea Minerals Policy and Seabed Management Bill,” said the EU Ambassador for the Pacific, Andrew Jacobs. “Dialogue and discussion on commercial exploitation of Deep Sea Minerals with a wide range of stakeholders helps build the necessary trust and understanding between different parties on a sensitive subject,” the Ambassador added. “The involvement of all of the people of RMI, including local communities, is key in the approach followed by the government to move forward with the Deep Sea Minerals industry”, said Secretary of the Ministry of Resources and Development of RMI, Rebecca Lorennij. “We are extremely grateful to SPC and the EU for the support and assistance provided to RMI and we want to believe that this partnership will continue and enable the Republic of the Marshall Islands to build its expertise and capacities with the view of managing and regulating this new industry for the benefit of Marshall Islands people,” the Secretary added. The Deep Sea Minerals Project supports this broad consultation, and offers technical advice and assistance to its 15 participating Pacific countries, providing accurate information and guidance through awareness programs and workshops at both the national and regional level, to ensure that countries have relevant information to make informed decisions. A consultative approach is vital in the formulation of any policy or national framework, as the public’s views and concerns must be taken into account before an agreement is made. The RMI awareness-raising meetings coincide with the development of a new series of videos the Deep Sea Minerals Project has made, to answer frequently asked questions regarding deep sea mining.
