RACE & RESTORE and DIGGING & DRILLING Magazines
RACE & RESTORE magazine is a locally produced, independent print and on-line publication and we welcome you to our third quarterly edition, thank you for picking it up. To our knowledge, another magazine that combines automotive & marine, race & restoration machines, projects and events in a single publication has never before been published anywhere in the world. On behalf of our RACE & RESTORE magazine team I thank TOOLMART, Alberts Car Stereo, Covs Parts, Bob Jane T-Marts in Perth and all of our advertisers for their kind support and print copy distribution of this magazine. You will find this edition packed with exotic racing and restoration, vehicles, projects, clubs, owner/driver and rider exclusive interviews and information about machines that travel at speed and/or with style, on land or water. Most people admire restored vehicles and motorsport is the second most attended sport in Western Australia after AFL. Motorsport also has almost three times more spectators than cricket in Western Australia so, featuring auto and marine, machines, projects and motorsport events in one magazine makes a lot of sense to us. We have introduced some new features in this edition including our first 4x4 Rock Crawler Buggy, Panel Van Club, Mural Trucks and we were fortunate to have been allowed access to the Kawasaki Australia image gallery for some great Supersport Ninja pictures for our first latest model motorcycle feature. Congratulations to Toby Price who has created motorsport history by becoming the first Australian to win a category of the famous Dakar Rally in his second participation. In 2015 he came third on his debut, then struck a deal with Red Bull and dominated the 2016 race with five stage wins. The 28-year-old from Singleton in the NSW Hunter Valley achieved this first by riding his motorcycle 9,301 kilometers over 14 days, in 40-degree Celsius heat and across three South American Countries. Toby Price finished 4th on the 13th and final stage of the world’s toughest off-road race and finished top of the overall bike standings. To make this achievement even more amazing, Toby Price had an accident in California’s Mojave Desert in 2013 and broke his neck which led to 6-weeks in traction and 7-months rehabilitation. He broke his C6, C7 and T1 vertebrae, leaving him close to paraplegia, but taking a 14-hour flight to Brisbane, spinal surgeon Paul Licina inserted three rods and eight screws fusing vertebrae in Toby Price’s back enabling him to ride again. Toby Price is another Champion keeping Australia in the sporting spot light. The Australian Nationals returns to Calder Park Raceway for the first time in 15-years and fans will be able to watch eliminations via live stream. Commencing at 12:45pm Australian Eastern Daylight Saving Time on Sunday January 24, viewers will see elimination rounds of the ANDRA Drag Racing Series plus rounds of the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series LIVE! Simply visit the Australian Nationals Live Stream page at ANDRA.com. au to watch the action on your computer, tablet or smartphone. We are always looking for fast racing machines plus restoration and rebuild project cars, bikes, boats and trucks so, please contact us to discuss a possible feature article for your machine or project. Cheers!

Donald Friend and his family have worked hard to achieve Supercharged Outlaw success. R&R recently caught up with this Western Australian Dowerin farmer for this exclusive interview and insight into his drag racing career.
8
January - March 2016 WWW.RACEANDRESTORE.COM.AU
RACE & RESTORE: Congratulations on such a successful career. How and why did you get involved in drag racing in the first place? Donald Friend: I guess that is an interesting question to ask a third generation farmer/drag racer. I first went to a drag race back in the late 60's, I was just a boy. They raced on a WWII airstrip near Dowerin (my home town). I think my ambition to be a drag racer was etched into my mind from that day. My all round passion for cars and performance saw me complete an apprenticeship as a mechanic. I kept going to the drags at every opportunity through the Ravenswood days and then the Motorplex with a burning ambition to have a go! It is sad to say but it wasn't until I was 50 when my mother died leaving me some money, that I decided to use it to build a car. R&R: What was your first drag car and how many cars have you raced during your career?
DF: The Jester is the one and only! R&R: What can you tell us about the first Drag Race you ever competed in and what was the result? DF: My first race was at the Motorplex in Kwinana. Geez.... that was 9 years ago! I can't even remember who I raced.....I think I lost! R&R: Can you give us a description of a run from white lights to shut off at the finish line? DF: My Supercharged Outlaw run starts by rolling the car forward through the water and onto the start grid. I always stop just out of the water before I start my burnout. During the burnout I have to concentrate on the rev range for the burnout and keeping the car straight. I then backup to the start line. My crew chief then directs me into pre stage, I then wait for my opponent to also pre

stage. I check that I am in the correct gear before rolling into full stage and engaging the transbrake, which locks the car into 1st & reverse. As I do not have a rev limiter for the launch I concentrate on achieving about 4000 revs as I wait for the lights to count down and launch the car by releasing the transbrake button. Then it is all about keeping the car straight and shifting into top gear at about 3rd track going through the finish line at about 8800 rpm. I then release the parachutes whilst still under power. I then knock it into neutral leaving the engine to idle till I am off the track then I shut the fuel off and turn off the ignition R&R: What is your best experience/memory of your long drag racing career? DF: I guess most of my fondest memories have been created by the great people I have met through the sport, fellow racers, crews and track staff alike. Of course my best memory is of winning the National championship. In fact, not just the meeting but the whole experience, the raod trip there and back was

pretty good to. R&R: What is your worst experience/memory while racing and how did you handle the situation? DF: Worst experience was travelling across Australia to compete in a round of the Summit Series with my team and making it to the final and not getting to run it. It was a very disappointing low point in my drag racing career. I got a bit of gravel rash on my bottom lip as I drove back across the Nullarbor. R&R: What are your top 10 tips to those who are thinking about to start racing? DF: My tips are: 1) Pick a bracket you can afford. 2) Buy a car that someone else has started to build as its more cost efficient. 3) Settle for a consistent car and not worry about pushing to top qualify as you break too much.
4) Drink plenty before you race (hydrate) 5) Make sure you take a clean pair of undies. 6) Surround yourself with good people. 7) Aim at lots of little sponsors rather than one big one as if you lose your one sponsor you are out of action. If you lose one small one you can still race. 8) Safety first! Don't be affraid to put it on the trailer if there is any doubt. 9) Be gracious in defeat! 10) Have FUN! R&R: Who are your supporters/sponsors that you would like to thank? DF: I would like to extend a heart-felt thank you for my sponsor's commitment to making this team so successful. Without their support we would not have been able to go for the National title at all. So a big thank you to GT Radial Tyres and Fuchs Oils. And thank you for the great support of my local community sponsors, DKT Agencies Kellerberrin, Dunnings Caltex Fuel Suppliers Northam, Steaks'n'stuff "great" butchers in the Swan View, The Dowerin Hotel, you
won’t get better hospitality and Rules Lime Sand. I would also like to acknowledge special commitment and dedication to the sport of the following sponsors who support several racers. Chris at DTM Transmissions in Malaga, Gonzo at Allfast Torque Converters Malaga and Rory at Speed Torque Malaga. A special thank you to my crew Colby Freind, Manda Appleyard, Scott Whitsed, Bruce Hill, Chris Webb and Ben Stockdale, a great crew that made our trip successful and fun! And many thanks to our hometown loyal supporters who travelled across Australia to cheer us on....Dallas and Beavan Evans, Roberta Cooper and Lindsay and Jill Freind. R&R: What does the future hold for you and your team? DF: Currently our sport is in a state of uncertainty with many administrative changes going on so, we are unsure of the future of the sportsman class, but I would like to travel and defend my championship. I have decided to park up and wait for the political dust to settle!

R&R: What can you tell our readers about your boat, navigator and your race team?
R&R: What is the build, year, model, running gear and specifications of your boat?
SC: My number 6 boat, Quality Time has a Mack Craft Hull, originally from New Zealand. I purchased the boat with no motor or jet unit. I then proceeded to put in a 6L LS engine, coupled up with and 8 Âź Southern Jet. When we started racing, my wife was my navigator, but since having our daughter,

nately our class is not yet recognised with the AFJSA. R&R: Do you have a story you would like to share with our readers? SC: Jet Sprinting is not as expensive as you may think. The initial outlay is 90% of your cost. There are a lot of second hand boats available at a reasonable cost. The general maintenance and wear and tear is less than a car. We have a local track and we race against the clock. The adrenalin rush is worth every second. The feeling you get as you pull up to the start line and see the light go green is a feeling everyone should experience. If you have never felt your stomach in your throat then jet sprinting is a must for you.
OWNER/DRIVER SIMON CAIN
R&R: Was there ever a time that you wanted to walk away from racing? SC: We (my Wife & I) moved away from off-road racing into Jet Sprint Racing due to the expense & time. We would spend 2-3 days away at country tracks, now it’s only a day as the track is local (Baldivis). The maintenance cost is less in Jet Sprint & it is a far bigger adrenalin rush. R&R: What is your biggest wish? SC: To promote our sport & make it bigger. It surprises me how many Perth people do not know the track still exists in WA. We have have 2 tracks on our calendar (Baldivis & Newman), with the possibility of a few others in the future.
R&R: What are your top 10 tips to anyone thinking about starting up in racing Jet Sprint boats? SC: Buy a boat Find a navigator Get a pit crew Race to enjoy, get into it for the fun. Start slow & go from there Get lots of wheel time You can split costs by finding a second driver (B team, 2 teaming it) Get involved with the club It’s a family sport so bring the family along Take advice & ask for help from other competitors as they are all willing to help.
R&R: Who are your supporters/sponsors? SC: We have some amazing sponsors: Welshpool Auto Electrics, Active Automotives, T & R Prestige Smash Repairs and Geraldton Freightline. R&R: What does the future hold for you and your boat? SC: To continue racing, make an Australian Series and if possible a World Series. I am looking forward to my daughter joining the sport in our up and coming junior boat in a few years & hopefully watch her grow in the sport. Owner/Driver: Simon Cain

4x4 ROCK CRAWLER BUGGY After seeing Sam Chapman putting his 4x4 Rock Crawler Buggy through its paces at the 4WD & Adventure Show in Perth recently, we just had to arrange this exclusive interview and pictorial feature.
RACE & RESTORE: How did you get involved with you always just had an interest in 4WD vehicles? Rock Crawlers and 4x4 Building/Driving? SC: I was always interested in four-wheel driving SAM CHAPMAN: It started with the car that I had and also the camping aspect and it evolved from before I built this Rock Crawler, it got to the point there. I couldn’t go any further with suspension where I wanted more than what was on the road. I modifications with the car I had so, around 2002, the took the next step, handed the license plates in and grinder came out and the story is endless now. started to build something out of the norm which only took eight months with a lot of help. R&R: How many 4x4 Rock Crawler have you built. R&R: Have you done any other motorsport or have 28 January - March 2016 WWW.RACEANDRESTORE.COM.AU

Owner/Builder: Sam Chapman
Images: Anthony Clarke built the current Buggy that I have now. R&R: What are the specifications of your Rock Crawler. SC: I wanted to do a Rodeo because it hadn’t been done by anyone and I bought the original Rodeo for $250 from Gumtree, cut it back and fabricated a tubular frame. We installed a 5.7 Litre LS1 engine and I have ordered two CT20’s will fit twin turbos to it soon. A good mate of mine donated a Turbo 350
transmission with a stage-2 shift kit through it with rebuilt clutches and bands and runs through an Atlas Transfer Case from the US. I can select high or low in the front or rear and disconnect the front or rear and picked up the 2 ½ Ton Rockwells imported from the US. These come with drum brakes as standard but when they fill with mud they don’t work so, I fitted a pinion brake. I put a VE slotted rotor on the front with a 100-series caliper and a Falcon rear rotor with a 100-series rear caliper on the back and the steering is hydraulic on the front and rear. WWW.RACEANDRESTORE.COM.AU January - March. 2016 29
R&R: What was the most challenging part of the build. SC: The biggest challenge was getting it to work as one unit. With 54 inch tyres, running truck diff’s plus linked geometry and cutting and grinding to keep it as small as possible, making it all work together was very challenging. R&R: What was your day job when you started to build 4x4 Rock Crawlers? SC: I was an accessory fitter for nine years and am actually a boat builder by trade and learned the tools of the trade and fabrication through my earlier career. R&R: Who taught you how to drive a Rock Crawler over such difficult obstacles seen at the 4WD Show? SC: I don’t know actually; I would like to know who did. You just pick it up as you go, especially with this one with four-wheel steering, it’s a bit different to what everyone else does but that’s half the fun really. Most of the time you can pick your own lines but when you can’t, you just figure out a way to get there. There is a science to it somewhere but most of the time it’s just trial and error, hence we use Navigators. We sort of just hold on to the steering wheel, the Navigator in competition basically does the whole job. R&R: Is this just a hobby or do you work on 4x4’s for a day job as well? SC: Yes, 4x4’s are my passion and also my job, I work for myself running SLINKY KUSTOMS which is a 4x4 one stop shop. We can build you a machine like mine or fit dual batteries, spot lights or any accessory that you need. I also do any fabrication work that is required including wild and wacky suspension job’s. solid axel swaps and pretty much anything you want at this one stop shop. R&R: Are there some people/companies that have helped you along the way that you would like to thank? SC: Yes, I have a lot of sponsors that have come on board especially in getting me over east for the last four years in a row. Thanks to Chris at Lockedup 4X4 who brings in a lot of our parts from the US, Auto One Midland, a great bunch of guys there, QV who do automotive and mining lights, have come on board this year and Tough Dog 4WD Suspension have come from over east to help out as well. I want to thank my wife Kerry for her support, patience and understanding and all my friends have also helped a lot to put this Buggy together.

WYLIE COYOTE Brothers Barry and Terry Batten are the founders of BPT Motorsport have been involved in and worked in the automotive scene since father Barry Batten Snr. showed them how to hold a spanner. Both brothers have trade engineering backgrounds working with RIO TINTO in mechanical and H.V. electrical drivetrain propulsion and this team now lead the industry in automotive innovation and standard. Both brothers purchased their first EEC4 powered Fords in 1994 and they have been researching and looking for ways to improve the stock fuel injection system and its controls for both power and economy ever since. Their experience in custom tuning started with the EEC Tuner and they developed strategy templates and binary matching newer Ford engine management systems from there. The brothers were involved in introducing the Australian tuning public to the new Power PC Ford engine management tuning tool and made the initial contact to introduce SCT into Australia in 2003. In 2005 BPT Motorsport started to adapt the Australian version of Delta Force tuning software and strategies for the Australian Ford. In 2015 BPT Motorsport launched their brand new state of the art workshop. The new supercharger was developed and tested using an FPV GS ute (rated at 315kW) as a platform in

2010. This engine has different head part numbers to the US and the combustion chambers have been opened up to reduce compression in anticipation of boost and is unique to Australia. New camshafts have been installed that don’t use variable cam timing as in the US. The ute produced 292 rwkW (391rwhp) and around 650Nm at the flywheel, in stock form. The new supercharger and intercooler combination produced 421 rwkW (564rwhp) from the otherwise standard 5.0-litre Coyote engine and the supercharger outlet air temperatures had dropped to only 31°C above ambient. BPT’s impressive Coyote engine, now topped with a huge 4.5litre Whipple supercharger made an easy 922rwhp in the vehicle in 2014 - putting out more than 1400Nm of torque. A Ford Racing heavy duty block was available which addressed the weakness in the Coyote bores. A modified standard block is also available that uses a special electron welding technique to build up aluminium material inside the water jacket to support the bores but the cost of this block is comparable to the new race block so, they decided to use the Ford Racing version. Barry and Terry from BPT started with a new Coyote block, bored to 3.652-inches to suit Manley’s Street Master forged pistons with a 12cc compression dish
and four eyebrow reliefs required in a four-valve engine. Manley’s 5.933-inch lightweight Pro Series rods match the pistons and connect with the Ford Racing 3.650-inch stroke forged crankshaft. The original cylinder heads were machine ported in both the intakes and exhausts and sported new five-angle valve seats for improved low-lift flow in the USA. A pair of brand new Comp Cams shafts sit on top of each head, which were custom ground for this engine. When using high lift and longer duration camshafts, the use of phase or advance stops is mandatory due to their tight piston to valve clearances in these engines from the factory. A cam sweep forcing the engine to run at positions of camshaft advance and retard many degrees away from where it would normally run are part of the stock PCM’s engine management routine. This is part of an anti-carbon programme for OEM engines but never a good idea with a modified camshaft, as the results would be catastrophic. The huge 4.5 litre Whipple supercharger is supplies enough air to produce 1400hp so, there is plenty of room to dial it up. It was quite an en-
gineering challenge grafting the big blower onto the little Ford engine and a Roush intake manifold was fitted and re-engineered to increase its airflow capacity by 18%. There is a high capacity water-to-air intercooler in the manifold which is linked to a custom made front-mounted, high flow heat exchanger and intercooler coolant flow is provided by a Ford Racing pump. BPT machined an aluminium adapter plate to fit the Whipple supercharger onto the intake manifold. The stock harmonic balancer was replaced with a SFI approved 8 rib belt drive version to provide efficient belt path, with sufficient belt wrap on all pulleys. Barry and Terry designed a custom snout pulley that incorporates a crush plate to ensure even torque on the pulley and perfect alignment as it is tightened. After the pulleys were in place they modified the front of the block and idler pulleys to create a workable and reliable belt path for the supercharger drive. Further modification was carried out and aftermarket adaptor blocks were bolted to the back of the heads allowing coolant to flow from one to the other, preventing hot coolant from collecting at

the rear and forcing the rear cylinders to run hotter than the front cylinders, an important detail in a high output supercharged set up. A substantial fuel system and a highly flexible engine management system are also required for an engine capable of consuming so much air and BPT are using an Australian Power PC to control the engine. A Ford Cobra Jet single oval blade throttle body is used to control incoming air with an area equivalent to twin 75mm round throttle bodies. Either 98 octane or Ethanol based variety of fuels is delivered to the engine by arrays of 2000cc fuel injectors in custom rails depending on application and boost level. The engine will run on BP98 and be limited to between 15 and 20 psi for the street and for the track, the fuel is changed to E85 and boost is dialled up to 27 psi.

PAUL ANDREWS TRANSPORT Paul Andrews grew up with trucks in New Zealand, his Father had 20-trucks in their family business, he came to Australia to race bikes in 1986 and ended up staying. Working for a long-time family friend, Derek Murray & Co for 20-years he learned all about trucks and with their help and set up his own Paul Andrews Transport company in 2006.
THE PHANTOM This 379 model, 2008 traditional shape Peterbilt has a Caterpillar 700 HP engine with an 18-speed road ranger gearbox and 456 diffs. This truck was the first stamped 140-ton GCM rated Peterbilt in Australia. It has been stripped down to the chassis rail and completely rebuilt with a bigger 70-inch bunk and bigger, higher roof and Foxtel Satellite Dish on the roof. Paul was not aware of the Phantom comic character, the name actually came from a great American song, Phantom 309 and Purple was my wife’s favorite color. Paul asked Frank from Christy’s Custom Painting in Melbourne to get the name airbrushed on the side of the bunk and he found Daniel Powers from Power Airbrush Studios in Melbourne to do it. Daniel told Paul that if he let him do what he wanted, he would look after him so, the whole truck was his design. 52

PETERBILT MURAL TRUCKS Paul started by working as a sub-contractor towing Derek Murray & Co trailers. In 2009 he had a couple of Kenworth’s, I always wanted a Peterbilt and bought The Phantom to cart general freight WA wide and then bought The Spider in 2014. In 2010 Paul got into the fuel game and started exclusive cartage for business owners, Keith Mitchell at Oil Tech and Bob Peirce at Oil Tech Fuel and his trucking company has grown from there.
THE SPIDER This 2012 built, 2013 compliance Peterbilt is 90-ton GCM rated truck with the latest Cummins Euro 6 engine with AdBlue, EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), which is due to be introduced into Australia in 2017, it has an 18-speed fully auto shift and 411 Eaton diffs. This truck took one-year to ADR as it was the first Peterbilt with this particular cab in Australia The artwork is done as a body wrap in 2015 by Paul’s friend Richard at Auto Vision signage and graphics in Welshpool, Western Australia. Paul explained what he wanted for the mural on The Spider and Harley drew up the design with Paul being very happy with the really great end result.

AUSTRALIAN NATIONALS RETURN TO CALDER PARK RACEWAY Australia's most prestigious drag race returns to spiritual home Calder Park Raceway for the first time in 15 years! Racing for the biggest prize payout in Aussie drag racing history, the stars of the ANDRA Drag Racing Series and Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series will battle it out for ANDRA Gold Christmas Trees over two intense days of The Most Powerful Motorsport on the Planet!
Pro Stock battle led by Lee Bektash looms for Australian Nationals
Image-Dave Hope Pro Stock, considered by many as the “drivers category”, promises to deliver the goods when the Australian Nationals return to Calder Park Raceway for the first since 2001 on January 23-24. The site of some iconic moments in Pro Stock, Calder Park will host at least 10 teams including current ANDRA Drag Racing Series Pro Stock Champion Lee Bektash (Keilor, VIC), title rival Nino Cavallo and 2013 Champion Jason Grima in his Drag Racing return. Bektash could be seen as the early favourite to win the ANDRA Gold Christmas Tree but the field is wide open as Chris Soldatos, Nick Xerakis, Bill Kotsias,
Bruce Leake, Gerry Parente, Bill Perdikaris and Jodi Racco round what is expected to be a shootout. “In Pro Stock everyone is a threat but Nino, Wayne Daley or anybody out there promoting this Mopar brand is never a threat, this brand is the priority!” said Bektash. “(It’s) not who will win or lose or who is faster as long as the Worldwide Mopar Family gets rewarded with
any reward, that’s my priority and my view being supported for the last eight years by the brand. “Bill Perdikaris beat Aaron Tremayne in Sydney because of whatever reason and not taking anything from Bill but we all know that Aaron is the best Pro Stock racer of the current climate. We are split by 1.5 tenths in qualifying and it’s a credit to the teams. “(It’s) great to see some old names who I’m sure would like to give us faster guys a touch up no doubt. “The only thing any category can do to keep it alive is to support it. Pro Stock is by far the most expensive class to run in Drag Racing behind the scenes (i.e. development and research). “I believe teams have put one to three seasons aside and concentrated on development or even business commitments which is what makes a Group One operation.” Bektash has never won the Australian Nationals in his hometown Melbourne. And he would like nothing more than to do so in front of his friends, family and supporters. But he also has his eye on the bigger picture.
“I was in the (Super Gas) semi-final against Matt Forbes in the staging lanes at the 2001 Racers Nationals (in Melbourne) before it was cancelled (due to weather). “It would be nice to do well in front of sponsors, family, friends and the Melbourne crowd, but I think as a group it would be more important to show how close and tight Pro Stock is and put on a nail biting performance as a category. “No doubt this will be the biggest event for Peter Pisalidis and right hand man Ray Treasure who is the best in the business. “The entry list will prove that and hopefully if we all help out by spreading the word and inviting sponsors, family and friends – plus the diehard Drag Racing fan who would like to see some Group One action that hasn’t been there for many years on the same weekend. “I wish everybody all the best and looking at the weather my tip will be that the Nationals will attract 7-10k people per day.”

Parker has been on an extended hiatus since 2014 but the return of the Australian Nationals at his home track for the first time since 2001 was too tempting to pass up. “After winning the 2013 Australian Super Stock Championship I was forced to take a break from racing in 2014 when the three auto manufacturers in Australia announced they were pulling out of manufacturing in Australia in 2017,” said Parker.“My employer reacted by cutting the workforce to four-day weeks rather than put people out of work. As you can imagine losing 20% of your income came as a shock and as a family we had to be more aware of what we were spending our money on – luxuries like Drag Racing had to be put on the back burner.” Forced to dig in, Parker kept his Championship winning GXP in the shed, enduring a waiting game until it was time to fire the engine once again. In his time away he embodied the Aussie battler spirit never losing sight of his ambition to return to racing. By mid 2015 he was rewarded when business picked up and five-day working weeks became the norm once again.“I was already in talks with Pro Stock legend Peter Ridgeway about the updates we were planning to the engine. Peter commenced sourcing the main parts for the upgrade and I got on with making some new components for the engine as well.
“As Christmas neared Peter came up with a plan to have the engine updated in time for the Nationals at Calder. Being our home track it is imperative that we are there not only to support the facility, but to race in front of our home crowd and many family and friends that haven’t seen me race the GXP before. “Of course the double prize money that is on offer is a huge motivator to get out there and be in with a chance. Winning that would go some way to paying for the engine updates!” Ridgeway is overseeing the significant upgrade that should see the B/APA GXP pushing into the low 7.2’s or high 7.1’s, on a par with the lower end of Pro Stock, in the right conditions.“I don’t expect the air in January to be perfect for the naturally aspirated 400ci engine, but hopefully we see some un-seasonally cool air at Calder and you never know what might happen! “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following people for helping me get the car ready for the Nationals. Peter Ridgeway and Arthur Sagiaris from Custom Engines for their hard work trying to get the engine ready.“Paul Rogers Performance Transmissions for their dedicated support to ANDRA racing and my Proflite Transmission. Bob Ryan for his Carbon Fibre assistance in the last couple of weeks and Nick Xerakias at ERC Race Fuels.”
Ex-US Marine Jason Rich to race Portland and Calder
Former Super Stock Champion Darren Parker is in a race against time to get his engine ready for a long awaited Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series return at the Australian Nationals January 23-24 at Calder Park Raceway. Rich, from Cookeville Tennessee, will first race at South Coast Raceway in Portland this weekend followed by the Australian Nationals at Calder Park on January, 23-24. A multi event winner with over $100,000 in prize winnings, Rich will pilot a custom wrapped Modified dragster, which was a surprise to Rich on his arrival, acquired by Shane Wynd (Ringwood, VIC) especially for the ex-US Marine’s two week stay. The dragster and trailer will then both be for sale immediately following the Nationals. “When Shane showed me (the dragster) I was like, wow!” said Rich. “(I said) man, you did this for me? I couldn’t believe it, I was speechless at first and didn’t really know what to say.” Rich figures to be competitive in the double header despite a strong contingent of Aussie racers search-
ing for points. He would love to add an ANDRA Christmas Tree to his collection but he is really looking forward to meeting Aussie drag racers and sharing more stories. “I have never visited Australia but have always wanted to. “You guys don’t get to race as much as we do. We have events every weekend all over the country from local tracks to national or divisional events. Shane was real jealous of that. “What am I looking forward to the most? Meeting other people that share the same passion as I do about drag racing on the other side of the planet. “I’m looking forward to meeting Aussie bracket racers and sharing our knowledge.” The action will commence at South Coast Raceway with qualifying from 11am on Saturday, January 16 and eliminations from 10am on Sunday, January 17. Gates open at 9am. For more information, please visit: www.southcoastraceway.com

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH WA MOTOCROSS CHAMPION
DEAN PORTER
Dean Porter has had a long and successful career motocross racing and R&R recently caught up with this WA motocross champion for this exclusive interview.
RACE & RESTORE: You`ve had a big year so far leading the WA state series and success at various other events, what has been the highlight for you in 2015? Dean Porter: Yes, the highlight for me is staying healthy (touch wood). I`ve had a hard couple of years with injuries on my back twice, shoulder blade and stuff like that has kept me out for a while. This year I`ve just come back and done all the nationals and started getting better at the end with a 6th overall in the last round which is my best. The state titles are the same, just being consistent‌ I think I came it today with a 30 odd point lead so just want to keep that with a few more rounds to go. R&R: What was the lowest point? DP: Ah, that will be the nationals at Raymond Terrace. I was just coming on good coming 5th in the first race, and 2nd race fourth and some guy just jumped this triple and landed straight on my back. I was knocked out cold and didn`t know where I was. That was a bit scary as it could be another broken bone and year over sorta thing but turned out to be a pretty bad concussion with a few weeks off. R&R: Who has been your toughest competitor this year in the WA state series?
66 January - March 2016 WWW.RACEANDRESTORE.COM.AU Images and Interview by Martin Taylor
DP: Robbo Lovett, his 2nd in points at the moment and has been really fast as well.
R&R: Unfortunately, he had some issues heading into this round? Dean: Yeah his bikes were stolen last week, that sucks. R&R: Now for readers new to MX, Motocross is a physical demanding sport; how much exercise/practice do you get and what does a typical week look like? DP: Yes I`m working as well now, so if you do it for a living it`s full time, but I`m working during the day so usually Mondays I`ll recover from the weekend. Tuesdays I ride in the afternoons, Wednesday`s I`ll train at Injustice CrossFit in Rockingham, do a session down there. Ride again Thursday and usually rest on the Friday. And yeah race Sunday. R&R: You`ve raced international and interstate, what would you say are the biggest challenges for someone from WA who would want to follow suit? DP: Ah just the travelling, it`s so much further to go as most of the races for the nationals are all over the East Coast so you need to drive your van over. If you’re lucky enough to get a team ride there is still a 5-hour flight, so you are not as well prepared as the rest of them. But it is what it is, and you need to make it happen. R&R: What are your top tips for anyone thinking about starting out with MX racing? DP: Ease into it, don`t try and go to fast straight away. The speed will come, you just need to learn how to ride first before you try and go fast…and just enjoy it! R&R: Which is your favourite WA track and why? DP: Manjimup, it’s really fast and a bit sandy in spots. That`s probably the best track. Cool place to go and a good atmosphere. R&R: Anybody you wanted to thank? DP: Yes, all my sponsors. Berry Sweet Strawberries, they have helped me out heaps this year with the bike and all the nationals. Mandurah City KTM for all their support, Seven MX gear and Suomy helmets, Golden Tires and Injustice CrossFit for all their help.

1934 CHEVROLET FOUR DOOR SEDAN

1934 CHEVROLET FOUR DOOR SEDAN There were 3,276 Chevrolet sedans built in 1934 and the new car price was US$665.00. Joe Italiano did a great job with the complete restoration of this 1934 Chevrolet sedan over many years. R&R spent a great afternoon conducting this interview with Joe and photoshoot for this beautiful hot rod. RACE & RESTORE: This is a great example of a 1934 Chevrolet Sedan, what is the story behind choosing to buy and restore this car? JOE ITALIANO: This was my first Hot Rod, I was at the Morley Park Hotel when I was about 17 and a mate of my now father-in-law pulls up outside on a Sunday afternoon in a metallic green, 1934 Chevy sedan. Back then, it was all about GT HO’s and A9X’s but when I saw that, I told myself that one day I had to get one. Two years later I met Brian French and became mates with, found a body for me, I bought it and joined the West Coast Street Rod Club.

It was in good condition and I did a little bit of restoration work in the beginning to stop it from rusting and then life got in the way and I shelved the project. I took up the restoration again when I was 38 to try to finish it for my 40th birthday. The total project took 7-years to complete. It’s a true show car and has won a lot of awards in WA and over on the East Coast. It has a steel body, steel fenders and steel guards and has had a full ground up restoration from an original body. R&R: What shows have you won with this car? JI: In 2005 when I first started to show it here in Perth, it won top hot rod overall for three years in a row. In 2006 at the Victorian Hot Rod Show it won top show car, and top sedan overall. In Sydney around 2010 it got top sedan overall and we were invited to McGuire’s Superstars Series and out of the best cars in Australia, we came runnerup to Mark Course’s car, the Boydster which is arguably the best hot rod that you will see built here in Australia. It won top ten at the WA Street Rod Nationals in 2010 and top sedan, top hot rod, top interior, top paint and top undercarriage in pretty much all of the shows it has been in.
R&R: What are the mechanical specs, engine, running gear and suspension set up in your Hot Rod? JI: It has a 383ci Chevy small block, Proform 750 double pumper carb, Turbo 400 trans’ with 3800 stall converter, 9 inch diff with a true track, 4-piston calliper disc brakes and independent front end. Also has air conditioning, power steering, power windows and stereo sound system. I actually ran it over the quarter mile at the Motorplex, it ran a 12.0. We did another run giving it everything it had and smoked the tyres from start to finish line, melting all the seven clutches in the limited slip diff that I had then, as a result. R&R: What major modifications have you made to this rod? JI: There is no fibreglass in this car at all and we widened the rear guards and running by 2 inches to make room for the bigger tyres. We specially designed a 3-piece bonnet so, I can run it with just the hood, just the sides, all three pieces fitted or all three pieces off, as it is now. The sick custom ghost flame paintwork was done by Terry Rowe from Extreme Custom Restorations and the in-

a lot of money and time by doing this. R&R: Who are the people that you would like to thank that have assisted you with this project?
