Designer Bio 1932 - 2014

In loving memory of the extraordinary fashion legend  Oscar de la Renta was born in the Dominican Republic. He left at the age of 18 to study painting in Spain.  Oscar’s studies led to an apprenticeship with one of the world’s most renowned couturiers, Cristobal Balenciaga. Later, De la Renta left Spain to work as a couture assistant for Lanvin in Paris.  In 1963, he came to New York to design the couture collection for Elizabeth Arden. De la Renta worked for over two years for Arden, until in 1965, he started working for Jane Derby. Then in 1965, Oscar launched his signature ready-to-wear label.  Between 1993 and 2000, De la Renta became the first American to design a collection for a French couture house, the house of Balmain.  He received the CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990, and was honored as Womenswear Designer of the Year in 2000 and in 2007.  Served as a board member of The Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, Channel Thirteen/WNET, New Yorkers for Children, the Americas Society, and was chairman of the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute.  In 1982 he established La Casa del Niño, an orphanage and school for the children of La Romana, providing day care and education for 1,200 children.

In the Resort 2018 collection, Laura and Fernando were inspired by the beauty of nature’s bountiful jungle treasures: featuring lush sweeping banana leaf prints, dense jungle embroideries and prints with whimsical monkeys and richly hued flowers. Nautical knits and denims lend themselves to the overall feeling of effortless dressing. The focus throughout the collection is an easy, modern attitude with softer silhouettes. 8

COLOR Laura and Fernando continue the idea of bold color traditionally seen from Oscar in years past – maintaining the seasonal color palette with an updated and new saturation

KEY THEMES

COLUMN GOWNS •

Silhouettes – this directly ties back to the idea of relevance, giving the woman a commanding presence without a lot of volume

Sleek, linear lines with intricate embroidery motifs elongate the body

Unique detail is the crystal embroidered tubular cord, seen several times throughout the collection

SEPARATES •

Women want an alternative for evening/cocktail; a modern approach to the “cocktail suit”; we are seeing this on the red carpet as well as in regular life; and it is a great introduction to attract a new, more youthful client

There are tops with sash details and blouses with asymmetrical drapes which add an element of modernity and drama.

NATURE INSPIRED PRINTS •

One of the main themes of the Resort ‘18 collection is the use of vibrant, printed fabrics, perfect for the Resort delivery

The prints are translated onto a variety of fabrics

Jungle print on silk georgette, cotton twill, and as a jacquard

Floral prints on silk mikado and cotton brocades

Banana leaf print as a jacquard and a lurex matelassé

TRIANGLE CUT OUTS •

Geometric details give a modern “art deco” spirit to the collection

Triangles are seen in day and eveningwear; these cut-out details add interest on sleeves and at hems

The triangle motif is created with bead work embroideries and in crochet dresses

ASYMMETRIC HEMS •

The asymmetric hems in this collection emerged by accident, when Laura was trying to cut fabric off a dress and accidentally cut too much. The result was an updated shape in our classic day dresses and shirting

•

This theme is seen in a variety of silhouettes, across many different fabric groups

DENIM •

Denim is a youthful update to the ODLR brand for the Resort 2018 collection

Denim is used throughout the collection; in jackets, pants, skirts, and accessories. – The runway styles also feature rich embroidery that ties back to the jungle theme

The pants and skirts are meant to be an easy alternative to trousers while still achieving a polished look

16

MIX AND MATCH KNITS •

This collection features a variety of nautical-inspired knits in classic ivory and navy

Easy separates allow for mixing and matching; a new pant silhouette is belted with wide leg

Knits come in a variety of cottons and merinos with tie and illusion inset details.

Fabric Dictionary NEW COLLECTION COTTON TWILL 100% COTTON Cotton Twill is a type of material that consists of cotton textile that is woven with the characteristic twill pattern of diagonal parallel ribs. The weaving pattern is a series of diagonal, parallel ribs. These diagonal, parallel ribs give the fabric a very durable and attractive quality. SLUB TWEED 90% COTTON 10% VISCOSE A medium to heavy weight, fluffy, woolen, twill weave fabric containing colored slubbed yarns. Common end-uses include coats and suits. ABSTRACT LACE 54% COTTON 39% NYLON 7% POLYURETHANE Lace is fine, delicate and woven from a variety of fibers. Lace refers to an open fabric that is created by looping, twisting or knitting threads in a specific pattern. STRETCH GEORGETTE 95% SILK 5% LYCRA It is a sheer, lightweight, dull-finished crêpe fabric, which is made from highly twisted yarns. Georgettes’ characteristic is a crinkly surface which makes it springier and less lustrous than the closely related chiffon. STRETCH TWILL 98% COTTON 2% ELASTANE Stretch cotton twill fabric woven with a fine parallel and diagonal rib pattern. Because of this structure, twills generally drape well and withstand higher wear and tear. This twill woven fabric has an excellent stretch across the grain for comfort and ease SPANDEX SWIM 84 % POLYESTER 16% SPANDEX Spandex, Lycra or elastane is a synthetic fiber known for its exceptional elasticity. It is stronger and more durable than natural rubber. The yarns are characterized by their ability to recover from stretch. STRETCH BROCADE 50% COTTON 49% VISKOS 1% ELASTANE Brocade is an elegant plain weave fabric which gives the appearance of having been embroidered. BRODERIE ANGLAISE 100% COTTON Is an embroidery technique in which round or oval holes are pierced in the material (such as cotton), and the cut edges then overcast; these holes, or eyelets, are grouped in a pattern that is further delineated by simple embroidery stitches on the surrounding material. TAFFETA 90% COTTON 10% VISKTOS A plain weave fabric which is a stiff but smooth fabric with a crisp finish and a shiny surface. Taffeta creases badly, is difficult to ease and is easily marred. ORGANZA 100% SILK A thin, plain weave, sheer fabric, which is more crispy than chiffon. DENIM 100% COTTON A densely woven, twill weave. Like other twills, one finds the familiar diagonal ribbing on the back side of the fabric. Denim is a very resistant soft fabric. The word guipure is no longer commonly used to denote such work as this, but has become a term of variable designation, and it is so extensively applied that it is difficult to give a limit to its meaning. It may be used to define a lace where the flowers are either joined by brides, or large coarse stitches, or lace that has no ground. This fabric has a design of Baroque scrolls in the lace. CHANTILLY LACE A handmade lace named after the city of Chantill, France, in a tradition dating from the 17th century. The most famous are silk laces introduced in the 18th century. Chantilly lace is known for its fine ground, outlined pattern,[ and abundant detail. The pattern is outlined in cordonnet, a flat untwisted strand. The best Chantilly laces were made of silk, and were generally black, which made them suitable for mourning. The lace is produced in strips approximately four inches wide, and then joined with a stitch that leaves no visible seam. GUIPURE LACE from Old French guipure, from guiper to cover with cloth. A term used for lace of different kinds; most properly for a lace of large pattern and heavy material which has no ground or mesh, but has the pattern held together by connecting threads called bars or brides. It was originally a kind of lace with twisted silk. The name was afterward applied to heavy lace made with thin wires whipped around the silk, and with cotton thread. The word guipure is no longer commonly used to denote such work as this, but has become a term of variable designation, and it is so extensively applied that it is difficult to give a limit to its meaning.
