The 30th Convergence India and 8th Smart Cities Expo, India’s largest tech & infra expos jointly organised by the Smart Cities Mission, Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA), India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), and Exhibitions India Group (EIG) concluded successfully today with a closing ceremony of Smart Cities India Awards & FinTech India Innovation Awards.
The inaugural day of the event was graced by the presence of Shri Nitin Gadkari, Hon’ble Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Government of India.
The expos hosted approximately 1000 brands and 200 start-ups over a period of three days at the Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Living up to this year’s theme of ‘Innovation driving Sustainability’ representatives from key ministries spoke of ongoing ‘Digital India’ programmes, spokespersons of big Indian and global
brands deliberated on future plans and new-age startups showcased solutions for transforming India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge-based economy.

Nine Ways to Protect Your Business from Cybercrime
Cyberattacks are becoming increasingly more complex and sophisticated, impacting industries and organizations of all shapes and sizes. What is interesting, is that perpetrators of these attacks are becoming more diverse, ranging from Initial Access Brokers (IABs) to ransomware gangs. Collaboration among these bad actors poses a challenge for detecting and defending against attacks, making it difficult for most organisations to defend against on their own.
A common method often used by attackers to breach networks is the exploit of ProxyShell vulnerabilities in email servers. This tactic involves Initial Access Brokers (IABs) who sell access to other attackers after gaining entry through these vulnerabilities. Shockingly, unpatched ProxyLogon and ProxyShell vulnerabilities were responsible for almost 50% of all analysed incidents in 2021, and attackers continued to use them in 2022. The exploitation of these vulnerabilities by IABs and other attackers can lead to multiple attacks on a single target, thereby making it easier for them to gain access.
It is no secret that cybercriminals are constantly improving their tools and techniques. One example of this is the rise of double extortion ransomware, which involves both data exfiltration and encryption, thereby increasing the potential damage to victims. Furthermore, longer dwell times leave organizations more exposed to multiple attackers and multistage attacks. Between 2020 and 2021, the average dwell time increased by 36%, making it more difficult for organizations to detect and mitigate the effects of such attacks.
In light of this, it is important not to become complacent. Leaders must keep in mind that all organizations are potential targets and no industry is immune to attacks. 2. Monitor and respond to threats 24/7

6. Inventory all network assets
To minimize the chances of malicious activities, it is crucial to conduct network scans and physical checks to keep an inventory of all the assets and accounts on your network. This includes identifying all connected computers and IoT devices. Failure to account for unprotected devices can heighten the risk of security breaches.

A wholly agile, zero commitment model can work well for some workloads that experience peaks and troughs of demand. However, as cloud adoption matures within organisations, base loads become more predictable. This means that organisations must strike a balance between committed spend and agility with their cloud providers so as to maximise the return on their investments whilst keeping the agility they need. As technology platforms become more dynamic, this can be a daunting task. As such, more and more companies are implementing the practice of cloud financial operations (FinOps), that unite business strategy with enterprise-wide accountability to manage and optimise cloud spends.
FinOps is the relatively new practice of driving visibility and bringing financial accountability to the variable spending model of cloud. Essentially, finance and IT develop a series of best practice measures to quantify and provide insight into the associated cost of cloud usage. The objective is to create a cloud financial model that balances commitment with agility, delivering the needs of the business, whilst continually monitoring and optimising architectures to ensure performance and availability.
The first steps of cloud migration
Cloud migrations represent a major shift in how an organisation enables IT and digital initiatives. And this migration is on a strong trajectory in India, with the Indian public cloud service market expected to be worth USD 13 billion by 2026, according to an IDC report.
The goal of any cloud migration or adoption initiative is broadly to fuel digital transformation by moving focus away from running technology and towards innovation through technology. One good example is the deployment of cloud-native application platforms like serverless, microservices, which enables IT staff to focus on application development or more business outcome-focused activities rather than just “keep the lights on.”

One way cloud decision makers can take a proactive approach to managing their cloud costs is by implementing a FinOps practice. More than simply managing and monitoring costs, FinOps takes a holistic view of the cloud’s business value along with an organisation’s objectives.
In any cloud deployment, FinOps teams have to balance the need for speed/performance, quality and cost. Just as you do not need to drive at race car speed to get to the grocery store, the highest level of performance may not be needed 24/7 for every scenario. FinOps will help organisations optimise and right-size their cloud usage, thereby bringing about greater efficiencies in cloud deployment and overall cost.
The awareness and interest to adopt FinOps has grown quickly in APAC and in India in the last 12 months. This comes as enterprises look at cost management measures on the back of high inflation and increased costs, according to this Forbes report.

Recently Kaspersky launched its new AV solutions with a focus to further empower the customers. During this launch event, Rajeev Ranjan, Editor, Digital Terminal interacted with Dipesh Kaura, General Manager – South Asia, Kaspersky. The discussion revolved around new product line, channel plans, opportunities and much more. Read the excerpts below:
Rajeev: Can you please tell about your newly launched consumer products?
Dipesh: The focus of this launch is not just basic AV protection, but rather a shift towards providing more comprehensive cyber protection for consumers. A lot of effort has been put into developing features that protect digital identity, passwords, and users while they are online. The aim is to provide cyber protection from a holistic perspective rather than just focusing on the AV part.
In addition to these features, the tools have been designed to be more flexible and interactive for consumers. The software can alert users when certain features have not been enabled or when they are visiting potentially harmful websites or using rogue apps.
Furthermore, this launch will introduce dashboards for consumers, which is a first in terms of providing a consumer-friendly view of their cybersecurity status. The premium services will also be consumerdriven, which is unusual as these services are typically only available in the B2B market. Consumers will be able to interact with experts who can assist with health checks, installation, and other aspects of cybersecurity.
Rajeev: What is your current business goal when it comes to South Asian market?
Dipesh: The intention is to be ‘The Number One in The Market’, which has been the aspiration of both the organization and myself. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we aim to establish ourselves as the premium brand not just in India, but also globally.
In the past three years, the South Asia market has been particularly supportive and the channel has been instrumental in collaborating with us to bring our products to consumers. With the launch of this new
product and its innovative features, we anticipate that it will be even more exciting for the channel to sell our products.
Our ultimate objective is to attain the number one position in the market and maintain that position for years to come.
Rajeev: What is the awareness program you are currently running for both consumer as well as the partners?
Dipesh: Our focus is to enable the channel to understand the unique value proposition that sets Kaspersky apart from our competitors in the market. We want to ensure that our partners are equipped with a comprehensive understanding of our products and services, as well as the ability to effectively communicate the benefits of our offerings to customers.

While features are important, we recognize that consumers need to understand the practical benefits of these features to make informed decisions about their cybersecurity. Therefore, we are dedicated to enabling our partners to understand how our products’ features translate into tangible benefits for consumers.
Our primary focus for the India and South Asia market in the coming months is to ensure that our channel partners are able to effectively communicate these benefits to consumers. We believe that this approach will enable us to differentiate ourselves in the market and drive growth for our business.
Rajeev: How will you be building a more aggressive channel network across India?
Dipesh: Our engagement with Supertron over the past few years has been outstanding. As we move forward with the
launch of our new product, Kaspersky and Supertron share a common DNA - we both aim to be more aggressive in the market and to become the number one brand in our industry.
This shared goal will enable us to expand our reach in Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets, and we are excited to collaborate with Supertron on a range of activities that will drive channel enablement, consumer enablement, and cyber awareness. Our ambition is to elevate our brand perception so that when consumers think of cybersecurity, they immediately think of Kaspersky Cyber Protection for their endpoint. By working together, we are confident that we can achieve this objective and strengthen our position in the market.
Rajeev: How do you take care of the profitability and growth for the partners?
Dipesh: The profitability of a business can be achieved through two means - better margins and more scale. In the case of the consumer business, scale comes from reaching more customers, which in turn leads to increased product demand and awareness, resulting in business growth through the channel.
Working with Supertron, Kaspersky aims to create better reach and awareness for product, which will drive demand and grow the business through the channel. This will motivate the channel to sell more, leading to better bottom lines and a desire to do more business with Kaspersky.
This formula has proven successful for Kaspersky over the past three years, and with the new product launch, the company expects the benefits of the new features to make Kaspersky End Point a compelling product for consumers to purchase over competitors in the market.
Western Digital Reveals 66% of Users in India Do Not Take Full Data Backup

Upon delving deeper to understand the reluctance to backup and risk losing precious data and memories, the study reveals that respondents cited reasons such as the cost of a backup device, fear of losing the backup device, inability to find time to back up, finding it a cumbersome process, and finding it difficult to carry a backup device with them.
Sharing his views on the findings, Mr. Jaganathan Chelliah, Senior Director, Marketing, India, Middle East, and Africa said, “While there is high inertia among consumers to back up their data, we are seeing a slow yet steady mindset change. Consumers are becoming more aware of the importance of their data and looking for effortless backup solutions. We are pleased to play a key role in helping consumers understand the importance of data.”
Western Digital released the findings of a new study titled ‘Understanding Data Storage Habits of PC Users in India’, drawing attention to the data storage and backup habits of users in the country. The study, commissioned by Western Digital and conducted by Feedback Advisory, found that in India, only 31% of the respondents take data backups monthly. As per the study, 52% of the respondents also confirmed having lost their data, at least once, in their lifetime.
The study highlights that while awareness about data backup benefits has risen over time, however, in India, only 32% take a

productivity. To understand the kind of devices consumers utilize, the study finds that in India, 48% of users store data on external hard drives (HDDs), 39% use portable solid-state drives (SSDs), and 36% prefer cloud services.
However, in India, 66% of the respondents said that they would prefer an external HDD to back up their data in the future while 41% would prefer an external or portable SSD, underscoring the growing preference to store devices on personal portable devices. Moreover, with security being one of the key concerns, 69% of users are also willing to pay a premium for hardware encryption.

Currently, the gaming industry is witnessing several storage technology trends that are shaping the future of gaming. One of the most significant trends is the storage technology PCIe Gen speed - Gen 5. We’re witnessing the next level of solid-state drives (SSD) performance with PCIe Gen5 interface. They will be the fastest and highest performance SSD, that is 1.5 times faster than Gen4 and almost 20 times faster than SATA-based SSDs. Gen5 SSDs offer improved load times, resulting in a superior gaming experience for players. As a result, high-end system integrators will be capitalizing on performance and emerging techs. The Metaverse is built on a sea of data, and with the proliferation of technologies such as AV, AI, and ML, mass data growth is certain. The massive amounts of data created by IoT devices and processed by the cloud and network infrastructure are required to store and process data both on- and off-device, which is relatively close to the end-users. Therefore, solid physical mass data infrastructure is necessary to support Metaverse.
The evolution of Metaverse will require advances and investments across a wide range of technologies, including cloud and networking infrastructure, to realise its true potential. The Global DataSphere forecast of 221ZB of worldwide data creation in 2026, also reflects the data created on and replicated to AR/VR headsets, indicating that Metaverse is already on its way to becoming a reality. Metaverse can be the future of the online PC gaming industry in the presence of a strong physical mass data infrastructure to support its growth.
Rajeev: What does the storage roadmap for video games look like? Can you provide any forecasts or figures?
Sameer: According to recent KPMG report, India is expected to become one of the world’s leading markets in the gaming industry. Growing steadily for the last five years, it is expected to treble in value and reach $3.9 billion by 2025. With an abundance of data available to make highly personalised and receptive games, we can already see this growth fuelled by the advancements like high-fidelity graphics, streaming, cloud gaming, virtual and augmented reality, and Metaverse already in use.

HPE Acquires OpsRamp to Boost Hybrid Cloud Leadership
Hewlett Packard Enterprise announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire OpsRamp, an IT operations management (ITOM) company that monitors, observes, automates and manages IT infrastructure, cloud resources, workloads and applications for hybrid and multi-cloud environments, including the leading hyperscalers. Gartner estimates ITOM to be an approximately $39 billion market.

With Cash use declining from 71 percent of POS transaction value in 2019 to just 27 percent in 2022, India has emerged as a global leader in payments with the development of its next-generation real-time payments (RTP) infrastructure, the Unified Payments Interface, helping Ecommerce accountto-account (A2A) payments grow to US$12 billion, up 53 percent from 2021 to 2022 and digital wallets growth from 5 percent to 35 percent of POS value, according to a new report released from FIS. Epson announced that it has retained the No. 1 position in the Indian Inkjet Printer Market In the CY2022 (Jan–Dec) period. According to the latest data published by market intelligence firm International Data Corporation (IDC) in its Worldwide Quarterly Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker, Q42022, Epson captured 39.3%* market share in the Inkjet printer market [InkTank + Ink Cartridge printers] based on unit shipments. Epson shipped 853,572 printers during this period. Epson says its core promise of EcoTank Printers being Economical and Eco-friendly has found wide acceptance among both home and business consumers in India.

Global PC Shipments Declined 30% in Q1 2023
Worldwide PC shipments totaled 55.2 million units in the first quarter of 2023, a 30% decrease from the first quarter of 2022, according to preliminary results by Gartner, Inc. An unfavorable combination of oversupply and continued low PC demand due to economic uncertainties and a lack of purchase motivation led to the second consecutive quarter of historic yearover-year decline. Sophos Reveals 97% of Indian Organisations Find Threat Hunting a Challenge
Sophos published a new survey report, “The State of Cybersecurity 2023: The Business Impact of Adversaries on Defenders,” which found that 97% of Indian organisations find the execution of some essential security operation tasks, such as threat hunting, challenging. These challenges also include understanding how an attack happened, with 88% of respondents stating they have challenges identifying the root cause of an incident. This can make proper remediation difficult, leaving organisations vulnerable to repetitive and/or multiple attacks, by the same or different adversaries, especially since 82% of those surveyed reported challenges with timely remediation.
Worldwide IT Spending to Grow 5.5% in 2023, Says Gartner
Worldwide IT spending is projected to total $4.6 trillion in 2023, an increase of 5.5% from 2022, according to the latest forecast by Gartner, Inc. Despite continued global economic turbulence, all regions worldwide are projected to achieve IT spending growth in 2023. The software segment will see double-digit growth this year as enterprises prioritize spending to capture competitive advantages through increased productivity, automation and other software-driven transformation initiatives. Conversely, the devices segment will decline nearly 5% in 2023, as consumers defer device purchases due to declining purchasing power and a lack of incentive to buy.
