5G INNOVATIONS AND MICRON TECHNOLOGIES ARE CHANGING HOW WE STREAM CONTENT TOGETHER If you’re like me, the pandemic and subsequent new normal have changed how you use video streaming services. In the past, watching TV or movies was an occasional way for me to pass time. But not being able to visit with friends and family made it the way I kept myself occupied! I thought that it would be marvelous to share my video streaming with a larger group, in real time, so that we all felt connected with a shared virtual experience. Luckily, media streaming has become richer and more personalized. 5G speeds enable 4K and 8K video streams to mobile devices, and artificial intelligence (AI) is predicting what binge-worthy content we’ll like and want to watch next. We can now share this experience with others as social media and streaming have intersected, thanks to the recent innovation of social viewing, where multiple people concurrently view a single movie, TV show or event. As they view, they can interact using social features like picture-in-picture video feeds of users, comments and emojis. “VIRTUAL FAMILY ROOMS” ENABLE SOCIAL VIEWING Social viewing creates a real-time virtual family room where friends, family and colleagues watch the same content together — even though they’re not in the same location. Movies, TV shows or sporting events are streamed and synced across each viewer’s smartphone. And if the video is paused, it pauses in the exact same spot for all viewers. They can also see each other, chat, text and send emojis to the viewing group while watching the streamed content. This interaction is bridging the distance between friends and family, wherever they’re located. Social viewing can be an amazing experience, but one that calls for syncing concurrent 4K and 8K video streams. That means massive amounts of data requiring massive amounts of high-bandwidth memory. And these multiple, high-definition streams are being pushed out to multiple viewers — all at the same time. Social viewing company Groopview explains that social viewing is far more advanced than videoconferencing tools. “Those 6
I DECEMBER 2021
platforms are great for sharing PowerPoint presentations or documents but not so much for video streaming,” says Krishnan Rajam, Groopview Chief Technology Officer. “Social viewing requires an entirely other set of technologies like adaptive bit rate streaming, digital rights management, entitlements, synchronization of video frames across several devices on disparate network connections, connection management, etc. It greatly amplifies the complexity of providing a reliable and high-quality end-to-end service.” Micron is lending its mobile memory and storage expertise, tools and testing to help Groopview engineers optimize the viewing experience and uncover where the application is taxing the system and memory more than necessary. SOCIAL VIEWING IS FUELED BY MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF DATA The multiple concurrent video streams associated with social viewing are fueled by massive amounts of data. A 4K video with a 60 frames per second (FPS) video bit rate generates approximately 100 megabits of data each second. This increases as more viewers are added to a session or as the resolution of videos increases. For example, a social viewing session with five viewers simultaneously watching a 4K video while broadcasting each of their selfie videos in 4K results in multidirectional
networking data traffic upwards of 500 Mbps, which requires 5G network speeds to relay the 4K video1. Processing just a single high-resolution 4K video filmed on a smartphone requires a peak memory bandwidth upwards of 30 GBps2. These bandwidth requirements grow when social viewing features are added because they greatly increase the amount of data generated and broadcast. 5G data rates allow for multiple users and 4K and 8K streams. But handling massive video files requires high-bandwidth, low-latency and high-capacity memory to feed that data quickly to processors for seamless social viewing experiences. Adding dual-camera functionality to social viewing lets you add livestreaming events, such as vacations, soccer games or family reunions, to the list of content you can watch and react to with friends. But as you generate high-frame 4K videos in real time, saving those videos will also require enhanced storage and memory capacity. Rajam explains, “Companies like Micron bring acceleration efficiencies to 5G, with highly capable chips, memory and processing power in the devices — so when you put all those things together with compute and storage nodes that provide a tremendous acceleration of content delivery at the mobile network edge, 5G becomes very compelling.”

OPINION
MICRON’S MOBILE LEADERSHIP MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO UNLEASH SOCIAL VIEWING With social viewing, viewers expect the experience to run as seamlessly as simple tasks like checking email. Micron’s mobile memory portfolio is ideally suited to unleash the full potential of this 5G experience. With 52-GBps bandwidth for flagship smartphones, Micron LPDDR5 makes it possible to feed content and videos from multiple users to AI-powered processors quickly enough to experience seamless 8K streams, even when scaling to larger viewing audiences. It also provides enough bandwidth to combine social viewing with future features like portrait mode, augmented reality, 360-degree video and higher-resolution cameras. New 5G and AI-powered use cases like social viewing demand a new way of thinking about memory and storage — a holistic platform approach to achieve higher memory bandwidth and capacity, lower latency and lower power for seamless user experiences throughout the day, all on a single charge. Social viewing requires that dedicated high-performance memory bandwidth be
readily available to increasingly complex systems on chips (SoCs) to avoid bottlenecks. And as new 5G-enabled apps appear, mobile memory and storage performance must also scale to keep up with the higher 5G data download speeds. However, this performance cannot come at the cost of sacrificing battery life. Micron’s industry-leading mobile memory and storage products are the key to seamless user experiences. Our high-bandwidth memory products keep SoCs fed with a continuous stream of data, and our low-latency, high-capacity storage products are designed for quick downloads of videos for immediate online or offline viewing. Micron specifically engineered these products to fuel new applications — like social viewing — on 5G smartphones, balancing demands for storage capacity and computational power with size constraints, cost effectiveness and extended battery life.

INTERVIEW
“INDIA HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BECOME THE SPACE HUB FOR GLOBAL COMPANIES” The Indian space programs have got a boost in past few years due to technological advancements and the government’s focus on making India a leader in the space sector. Moreover, the increased participation of private players in India’s space programs has enabled India to tap the opportunities and boost our presence in space market. Today, the role of private players has increased multifold and it is enhancing India’s space capabilities. Also, the government is willing to bring reforms in the space sector. The government’s policies are helping the stakeholders to speed up their growth and develop India’s space ecosystem further. SIA-India is a vibrant young industry body, strives to extend the benefits of SatCom innovation and technology development to the society as a whole. Rajeev Ranjan, Editor, Digital Terminal recently interacted with ANIL PRAKASH, DIRECTOR GENERAL, SIA-INDIA. Mr. Anil shared his views on India’s journey in the space sector, participation of private players and the government’s focus in this sector. Read below the excerpts:
RAJEEV: HOW DO YOU SEE THE PARTICIPATION OF PRIVATE PLAYERS IN INDIA’S SPACE PROGRAMS? ANIL PRAKASH: The space economy worldwide is a mammoth USD 440 bn in 2020 and India’s share does not reflect the position like it should. The next giant leap to get a rightful slice of the pie of the world space economy can only be achieved by private sector role in the end-to-end participation of private sector as co-travellers in the national space economy, by exploiting the space capabilities for fulfilling the unmet needs of the nation and tapping into domestic and international markets. With the right mix of regulatory landscape and policies in place, India has the potential to become the space hub for global companies. RAJEEV: WHICH ARE KEY FACTORS HELPING THE PRIVATE PLAYERS TO GET A BREAKTHROUGH IN SPACE PROGRAMS? ANIL PRAKASH: The past engagement of the private sector as vendors has helped develop industrial capabilities within the country for advanced space programs. Moving ahead the private sector needs funding, technology and opportunities to build not just the industrial capability but also a capability to engage in all space related upstream, midstream and downstream activities. The industrial capability itself needs to leverage its maturity to ensure a strategic position in the global space supply chain. Defence has been a
16
I DECEMBER 2021
major user of the space sector worldwide and in recent times we have seen an earnest interest for use of space capabilities to add a strategic depth to India’s Defence preparedness. The entire value chain of academia outreach, technology transfers for commercialization, start-up incubation, IPR creation, valuation etc needs to be nurtured. While the existing startups hold a lot of promise, market size can support many more and this is established by a similar situation in other countries. An integrated strategy for development of the ecosystem needs to be supported by bold policies and a regulatory landscape allowing businesses to flourish. A beginning has been made starting with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s announcement to unlock the potential of the Space Sector in June 2020 followed by the government’s decision to open the sector for private players, the establishment of IN-SPACe to provide a level playing field in satellites, launches and space-based services, provisions and a better regulatory environment with single window clearance policy. With ISRO opening their haloed precincts for private sector to share IPR and infrastructure, the private players have an opportunity to make a mark in the thus-far limited scope. Large space manufacturing companies connecting with small industries and startup companies for services and components paves the way for many new businesses to grow. Kerala, Karnataka,
Andhra and Odisha etc. are building Space parks to facilitating cluster manufacturing approach to the space sector. FDI rules allowing foreign companies to set-up facilities in India and enabling 100% Foreign Direct Investment in the space sector is a huge step forward. Lately ISRO has been signing MOUs with startup businesses and going one step forward is also enabling startups to utilize ISRO’s facilities to perform various processes and functions, besides offering mentoring support which would further help the firms immensely. RAJEEV: HOW ARE GOI’S EFFECTIVE POLICIES IN SPACE TECHNOLOGY HELPING THE INDIAN SATCOM ECOSYSTEM? ANIL PRAKASH: While we do appreciate the earnest intent of the government in various new consultations, policy interventions, and recommendations by DoS, DOT, TRAI etc., these bits and pieces do not add up to a seamless and comprehensive framework to create an environment that brings in opportunities, funding and technology together. Though NDCP 2018, announced by DOT, places more reliance on satellite communications and calls for “strengthening satellite communication technologies in India”. The geospatial industry will get a major boost with the liberalization of geospatial data acquisition and simplifying cumbersome certification and license process.

“WE ARE SEEING DEMAND FOR HYBRID CLOUD ACROSS INDUSTRIES” In the fast-changing business landscape, businesses are betting big on next-gen technologies. The need for having robust and effective IT infrastructure is increasing so the market players are offering the most advanced technology solutions to their clients. The adoption of such advanced technology solutions results in greater benefits than operating over traditional approach. Oracle has been catering to the Indian market with its wide range of solutions. Oracle’s aim is to provide pace to businesses and help them with a balanced digital strategy to strive in the competitive business environment. Rajeev Ranjan, Editor, Digital Terminal recently spoke to SRIKANTH DORANADULA, VP-HYBRID CLOUD SYSTEMS, ORACLE INDIA. Mr. Srikanth elaborated about the current market landscape, adoption of leading technology by enterprises and Oracle’s plans to accelerate growth. Read below the excerpts:
RAJEEV: WHAT ARE THE MAJOR CHALLENGES FOR COMPANIES LOOKING TO SCALE UP THEIR IT INFRA TO BOOST THEIR OPERATIONS? HOW IS ORACLE HELPING THEM ADDRESS THESE CHALLENGES? SRIKANTH: Enterprise requirements such as adhering to data sovereignty guidelines, advanced security, low latency, and field deployability have prevented the adoption of the public cloud for a number of mission-critical applications in the past. We wanted to tackle this and help enterprises navigate these challenges. Our hybrid and edge offerings address customer requirements for specialized deployment, disconnected and intermittently connected operations, low latency and high performance, as well as data residency and security. Our comprehensive hybrid cloud portfolio provides enterprises with more flexibility and control over their cloud deployments vis-à-vis other cloud providers. RAJEEV: WHY HAS HYBRID CLOUD BECOME THE GO-TO IT INFRASTRUCTURE MODEL FOR INDIAN BUSINESSES? SRIKANTH: Technology has become all but inseparable from the business. stand and implement for all employees, not just the experts.
A hybrid cloud strategy empowers enterprises to scale faster and better via the public cloud’s innovative and flexible services. Enterprises also benefit from superior cloud economics, more choice, improved agility, greater regulatory compliance, and improved business resilience. Buoyed by this demand for hybrid cloud solutions, various analysts and industry experts estimate that the global hybrid cloud industry will grow to nearly $100 billion by 2023.
SRIKANTH: We are very committed to help customers realize more value from our hybrid cloud services and succeed in achieving their business objectives. In this journey, our partners are playing a vital role. We have a focused go-to-market strategy and a set of committed, competent partners. Our partner engagement program - the Modern Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN) - is simple and clear, with 3 Cloud tracks: Cloud Sales, Cloud Services and Cloud Build tracks. Each of these tracks empowers partners to enhance their Oracle Cloud capabilities in turn helping customers to succeed in their cloud journey.
RAJEEV: SECURITY IS A KEY PRIORITY FOR EVERY ORGANIZATION TODAY. HOW DO YOU HELP YOUR CUSTOMERS ON THIS FRONT? SRIKANTH: Both on-premises and cloud components have their advantages when it comes to data security. On-premises allows data to stay behind a local firewall, ensuring sensitive or proprietary data receives maximum protection. Cloud networks allow for benefits such as unified security policies and mass rollout of updates. With hybrid cloud computing, an organization’s unique and specific elements can be assessed under the microscope of risk tolerance, and thus assigned accordingly. We have a fundamentally different approach to security because we believe security should be foundational and built-in. And customers shouldn’t be forced into a situation where they have to make trade-offs between security and cost. Oracle has a multi-layered approach to security. Also, we believe security should be easier to under-

Partners are critical for our business success. We will continue to help our partners develop capabilities and fast-track knowledge/expertise acquisition to help support our customers effectively. We have a number of partner training and enablement programs throughout the year. To help customers gear up for a cloud-first world, it’s imperative that our partners are equipped with the right skills and expertise. Because we realize that thousands of companies and millions of users count on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) to run their entire application portfolio and mission-critical workloads. Also, OCI is one of the fastest-growing cloud platforms, and we are seeing an increased demand for OCI expertise across the globe. Therefore, we are offering free OCI training, plus free certification, via Oracle University until the end of the year. www.digitalterminal.in

CYBER SECURITY
SOPHOS RESEARCH REVEALS NEW VARIANTS OF ANDROID SPYWARE LINKED TO APT C-23 Sophos has published, “Android APT Spyware, Targeting Middle East Victims, Enhances Evasiveness,” detailing new variants of Android spyware linked to C-23, an advanced persistent threat (APT) adversary that has been active in the Middle East since 2017. The new variants are enhanced for stealth and persistence. The spyware presents itself as an update app with a generic icon and name, such as “App Updates.” Sophos researchers believe the attackers distribute the spyware app by sending a download link in the form of a text message to the target’s phone. The first time a target runs the spyware app, it asks for permissions to control various aspects of the phone. The attackers use social engineering techniques to convince the target these permissions are essential for the app to function. After the target has granted the necessary rights, the spyware then disguises itself using the name and icon of a legitimate app. This makes it harder for the phone’s user to find and manually remove the spyware. THE NEW VARIANTS The new variants use more, and more varied, disguises than previous versions, hiding behind popular app icons such as Chrome, Google, Google Play, YouTube, or the BOTIM voice-over-IP service. If targets click a fraudulent icon, the spyware launches the legitimate version of the app, while maintaining surveillance in the background. Previous versions of the spyware relied on a single command-and-control domain that was hardcoded into the app and operated by the attackers. If a defender found and took down the domain, the spyware was disabled. Sophos researchers believe that the attackers have tried to address this potential point of weakness in the new variants, which can switch the command-and-control server to a different domain. This allows the spyware to continue operating even after a domain takedown. The new variants share code with other malware samples attributed to APT C-23. Sophos researchers also found Arabic language strings in the code and observed that some of the text could be presented in either English or Arabic, depending on the language setting of a

victim’s phone. Nefarious features from previous versions of the spyware remain unchanged, such as: collecting text from SMS or other apps, contacts, call logs, images, and documents; recording ambient audio and incoming and outgoing calls, including WhatsApp calls; taking pictures and screen shots using a phone’s camera and recording videos of the screen; reading notifications from social media and messaging apps; and canceling notifications from built-in security apps, as well as from Android system apps. The spyware can also supress its own notifications. “Spyware is a growing threat in an increasingly connected world,” said Pankaj Kohli, threat researcher at Sophos. “The Android spyware linked to APT C-23 has been around for at least four years, and attackers continue to develop it with new techniques that evade detection and removal. The attackers also use social engineering to lure victims into granting the permissions needed to see into every corner of their digital life. Fortunately, there are practical steps that people can take to protect against spyware and many of them are worth applying even if users don’t believe they’re a target for surveillance.” Sophos recommends the following actions for anyone concerned about spyware or Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs): • Users should be wary of apps asking for sensitive permissions, such as device admin
or notification access, or those requiring superuser/root access. Users can view apps with device admin and notification access permissions by browsing “Settings” and searching for “device admin apps” and “notification access,” respectively • The sudden disappearance of an app icon after running it for the first time, which is often an indicator of an unwanted or malicious application • Targets of this family of spyware can remove the apps manually by navigating to the list of installed apps, selecting “Settings->Apps”and then scrolling to find the name the app used when it was first installed (such as “App Updates,” “System Apps Updates” or “Android Update Intelligence”) • However, many other forms of mobile malware conceal themselves from the list of installed apps. To remove these, users need the help of an anti-malware application • Sophos also advises users to install a mobile security solution, such as Intercept X for Mobile, to automatically detect spyware and malware • To avoid falling prey to malicious apps, users should only install mobile apps from trusted sources, such as Google Play. Update Android OS and other apps via Android Settings and Google Play respectively, instead of relying on third parties.

HP MAINTAINS NO. 1 POSITION IN INDIAN HCP MARKET WITH 46.9% MARKET SHARE According to the latest data released by International Data Corporation’s (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker India’s Printer market registered shipment of 0.84 million units in 3Q21 (Jul-Sep) growing by 20.3% quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) however declining by 7.5% from year-over-year (YoY) perspective. The printer market includes Inkjet printers, Laser A3/A4 printers and Copiers, Serial Dot Matrix Printers, and Line Printers. The inkjet printers’ segment declined YoY by 11.9% due to the low stock availability of ink cartridge printers. From a QoQ perspective, the segment however grew by 21.8%, primarily by HP’s delayed 2Q21 shipment spilling over into 3Q21. Additionally, with schools and colleges being forced to continue the virtual classes, demand from parents and students remained strong in 3Q21. The laser printers’ segment (including copiers) recorded a marginal YoY decline of 1.8%. The laser copier segment, however, observed a YoY growth of 15.1%. With the markets opening further, the demand from the government picked up following an increase in the number of new projects and execution of those that were previously on hold. The corporate sector, too, observed a surge in demand for laser copiers as they began resuming operations from offices in a phased manner. “In the Inkjet printer segment, while the shipment of single-function printers declined, that of the multi-function printers grew at 25.2% YoY. This growth came primarily at the back of ink tank printers and more specifically from the $200 - $300 category of printers. Because of its price point and added functionalities, there is a growing preference for multi-function Ink tank printers over Laser A4 printers in offices where these printers are typically deployed in the cabins of senior-level management. Most of the demand was met by HP and it could have been higher had it not been for the stock crunch that Epson and Canon faced in 3Q21,” says Bani 30

As schools/colleges open, we can expect demand for ink tank printers to start stabilizing in the coming quarters. Laser copier demand is expected to remain strong in Q4, as enterprises continue to bring employees back to offices,” says Nishant Bansal, Senior Research Manager, IPDS, IDC India.
