This growth is highly attributed to the increased demand for storage devices among people due to the more data is being generated each day. Moreover, professional gamers and basic PC users have started switching to SSDs for a better and smoother experience. Industry leader, Western Digital has been producing excellent storage solutions to boost data management capabilities for users across all vertical. Just recently, Western Digital launched its new portfolio of SSDs for the Indian market. DT got the opportunity to interact with Jaganathan Chelliah, Director – Marketing at Western Digital, India. He shared his overall marketing strategies, service offerings, and details about new launch as well. DT: How do you see the launch of WD Black™ SN750 NVMe™ SSD by Western Digital?
DT: How do you see the transition happening across HDD and SSD market space?
DT: How do you see your post service support model?
Jaganathan: This launch is very crucial for Western Digital, the portfolio that we have launched is best in class for SSDs market. NVMe Technology provides a significant improvement in terms of performance for PC users. We are extremely happy that we have been able to bring in this product portfolio for Indian consumers. If you look at how the technology has evolved over the past few years, our performance related growth has always been on the CPU’s side of PC technology. This is probably the first time that we are seeing significant improvement in performance from the storage perspective. And this will help the consumers in to have a far more interactive, immersive and productive experience.
Jaganathan: Today we see a significant transition happening into SSDs primarily because of the consumers think that they get value for money in terms of better performance at affordable price points. We are pleased to see the transition towards SSDs both in the desktop space and in the Laptop space. A good example would be how the laptop upgrades are happening in the service centers as if you go to a laptop service center and enquire so they will tell you that the people are actually asking for the upgrade of their hard disks and SSDs for better computing experience.
Jaganathan: We have a very robust post-sale service support model and it is fully equipped to take advantage of this new category so they have been trained to handle this very efficiently. We continue to look at how the market is growing and then we take a call depending on what is the need.
DT: What are your SSD offerings for different set of consumers?
Jaganathan: Adopting the SSD technology is a significant benefit for the customer because they are getting into a new technology which is going to give them better performance. So our WD Green portfolio is made for everyday computing and it meets the requirements of basic computing. When it comes to the highend portfolio, there should be a function that the customer wants so it’s depending on what are their usages they should decide what type of experience and performance they need. Accordingly, they can choose a particular product to meet their requirement.
Jaganathan: It depends on which type of applications we have brought. For gamers and content creators, we have WD Black SSDs, for mainstream or business PC users, we have WD Blue on NVMe technology and for basic everyday computing, we have an entry-level portfolio under WD Green. So it’s a complete SSD portfolio that we have, WD Green is based on SATA technology, WD Blue and WD Black have got SATA and NVMe technology.

DT: What are the options for consumers who want to buy WD SSDs?
DT: How do you take care of partner’s benefit and keep them motivate to perform better? Jaganathan: We have a very strong model to build the relationship stronger between us. We have various activities on the regular basis across all set of partners. We have calendarized a set of partner training events that happens on quarterly bases. We also use technology to stay connected with the partners and we run a WhatsApp business based interactive communication channel with our surveillance partners and SSD partners so that on real-time bases we can reach out to them and they can reach out to us. We also do various programs with our partners so that we are able to augment value to their businesses. We also have engagement programs as far as partners are concerned. Our ‘My WD partner program’ is highly recognized in the channel community.

FAIITA (Federation of All India Information Technology Associations) and PCAIT hosted a meeting in Delhi recently to addresses the concerns to keep alive the offline market in a fight with the dominance of online shopping platforms. The pricing on the e-commerce platforms has become a major issue for offline partners and traditional partners are suffering a lot. As time has come for the festive season, so in order to protect the dealers and retailers, FAIITA along with the major brands like HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer and ASUS discussed the challenges caused due to price disruption for offline partners. All the leading tech brands agreed upon 'Zero Tolerance' with regards to any price disruption. Business owners travelled from across the country to show the seriousness of the issue. Saket Kapur, General Secretary, FAIITA said, “All the five brands have expressed total support to the association and they have ensured zero-tolerance complied with any kind of price distribution. Zero tolerance before the judgment by Delhi High Court was not possible. The judgment which comes about two months back has inspired us to go for zero tolerance.” Alok Gupta, President, PCAIT commented, “Every time we used to move one step ahead. Initially, the law of the land was not so strict so they used to get away by saying that we 26

are unable to handle it. It’s only from last three years they have acknowledged of handling it. Last to last year they have shared a mail with us where they showed the concern about the online retailers, second year compensation this year zero tolerance. For three years we have reached here.” Champak Raj Gurjar, President of FAIITA stated, “FAIITA has informed the leading vendors in clear terms about the concerns of the offline partners and that just backend support to the offline channel is not sufficient; the partners want price parity between online and offline sales. And the offline partners want the implementation of this change before the forthcoming festival season. We are glad that representatives of all the leading vendors like Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, and ASUS have attended the event and have promised to consider the concerns of the offline partners and take immediate measures to set the same prices online and offline. Also, there are some concerns regarding the serial number of some HP products causing confusion among partners while differentiating originals and counterfeits and representatives of

‘‘We Have Expanded Our Reach With Over 2,500 Retailers Across the Country Today” Today, technological advancements have completely changed the world, every sector is leveraging the evolving technology for sustainable growth. The printing business all across the world has registered quite good growth in past years and it continues to grow further with help of new innovations into this domain. If we talk about the Inkjet, the adoption has increased in recent times. There are many verticals who are now shifted to Inkjet printing machine due to emergence of InkTank technology. Canon, leader in the domain has always offered excellent machine to large customer base across India. In a recent interaction with DT, C. Sukumaran, Director-Consumer Systems Products (CSP) at Canon India shared his views on the growth of printing business across India and their strategies to grow with the market. C. DT: How do you see the YoY growth for Canon’s printing business in India? C. Sukumaran: With the evolving technology landscape, consumers are looking forward to innovations that bring ease and connectivity to their everyday life. At Canon, we are committed towards the cause of making printing an enabler of creativity for consumers. In this endeavor, we have seen positive growth in the country when it comes to the printing segment ever since our inception. Going forward too, we are expecting a significant increase in our YOY growth in 2019. The InkTank printers contribute 70% of the inkjet market, which would be about 1,200,000 units and we foresee immense growth in this segment in the future as well. We are optimistic that we will witness steady growth in terms of products sold, from 200,000 units last year to 300,000 units this year. DT: How do you see the adoption of Ink Tank printers (Inkjet) among SMBs/SMEs? C. Sukumaran: SMEs have begun to understand the importance of maximizing productivity and ensuring profitability. Traditionally, India has been a laser dominated market targeting SMEs and corporates whereas inkjet printers have always targeted towards home user segments. However, with the introduction of Ink Tank printers, inkjet printers have made their way to small and medium businesses. Our range of PIXMA G-series printers are

equipped with a host of features that will cater to the varied print requirements of the SME and SOHO segment across India. These high capacity ink-tanks will enable an increase in the overall yield, which has brought down the cost of printing. Paired with the ink bottle's spill-resistant tops, the system is designed to provide seamless and clean usability at home and office. DT: Please brief about your channel ecosystem in India. What is your plan to boost channel strength in the near future? C. Sukumaran: Channel Partners have played an integral part in our success story in the country and as one of our key stakeholders, they have enabled us to strengthen our foothold in the industry and reach out to a diverse range of customers. With a strong network of 2500 channel partners across the length and breadth of the country, we endeavor to further consolidate our regional presence. Regional penetration is one of our core focus areas as we want to make our products and services available to the farthest geographies in the country. Moving forward too, we would ensure our presence on platforms where our customers are present, aligning with our corporate motto of always ‘delighting our customers’.
DT: What is your current retail plans across India? C. Sukumaran: As we have a diverse consumer base with varying buying patterns, our go to market strategy focuses on expanding touch points for increasing access to our consumers. After the introduction of the CISS technology, our printing business has definitely expanded across regions. Earlier the printing segment was limited to metros, tier 1 and tier 2 cities, but now CISS has helped us penetrate further into the tier 3 and 4 cities. Also, the launch of PIXMA Zones across India to enhance the customer experience is a way to connect with customers. We are available across all channels for providing the best of product availability and service to our customers. We have expanded our reach with over 2,500 retailers across the country today, along with tying up with national retail chains and e-commerce chains. Currently, we have a strong presence in over 600+ towns, regional penetration being our focus area. DT: How do you assure the best service support to your large customer base? C. Sukumaran: Service support is extremely critical to our growth and I can proudly share that our strong service network expands to over 600+ towns, covering the length and breadth of India. Phishing Emails Impacted 1 in 2 Indian Organizations That Were Hit by a Cyberattack Sophos announced the findings of its global survey, The Impossible Puzzle of Cybersecurity, which reveals IT managers are inundated with cyberattacks coming from all directions and are struggling to keep up due to a lack of security expertise, budget and up to date technology. The survey polled 3,100 IT decision makers from mid-sized businesses in the US, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, UK, France, Germany, Australia, Japan, India, and South Africa. The wide range, multiple stages and scale of today’s attacks are proving effective. For example, 54 percent of those who fell victim to a cyberattack were hit by a phishing email, 39 percent by ransomware and 48 percent said they suffered a data breach. Based on the responses, it’s not surprising that 50 percent of IT managers consider software exploits, unpatched vulnerabilities and/or zero day threats as top security risks, while 43 percent consider phishing as a security risk.
