he Internet of things (IoT) is believed to power enterprises and governments beyond proportion to make most of the resources. The number of connected devices are growing at a rapid pace. There is constant transmission of data and information through these devices which, if utilized adequately, can play a key role in several fields. Gartner alone forecasts that 6.4 billion connected things will be in use worldwide in 2016, up 30 percent from 2015, and will reach 20.8 billion by 2020. In 2016, 5.5 million new things will get connected every day. The numbers are growing significantly

as the Internet of Things (IoT) is believed to support total services spending of $235 billion in 2016, up 22 percent from 2015. Services are dominated by the professional category (in which businesses contract with external providers in order to design, install and operate IoT systems), however connectiv-

ity services (through communications service providers) and consumer services will grow at a faster pace. Gartner analyst Jim Tully outlines the scope, “IoT services are the real driver of value in IoT, and increasing attention is being focused on new services by end-user organisations and vendors.

While the internet of things has begun to make inroads into the today’s businesses incrementally, it is about to change our lives when the smart cities would be a reality in India as the basis of the proposed 100 smart cities is the smart use of resources which is not possible without the use of IoT. 01-15 March 2016 Digital Terminal 6

The scope in the local market India is a major market for IoT technology as there lies great scope in key areas like healthcare, banking, retail, education, security and smart cities, etc. Experts believe that the whole smart cities discussion will remain inconclusive if the role of IoT in them is overlooked. But making IoT a reality needs robust infrastructure in place. It requires the latest datacenters in place, ample bandwidth to let the data flow to and fro.

The smart city initiative by the government is leading to massive and rapid expansion of IoT. “The IoT will, in fact, subsume the ICT industry over time and to good effect. In India with the significant upsurge in lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure, the evolving remote healthcare ecosystem can leverage IoT for preventive care

India as a country has several challenges that demand data. If the population is connected through devices or sensors, there would be enough data to solve the major challenges. “IoT for India means enabling over 1 billion people connect to internet via various devices in context, for the efficient and optimal usage of resources to create a sustainable In-

Government is going to play a huge role as it plans to spend a lot on Digital India and smart cities. Bill Ye, Country Manager & Director, TP-LINK India, said, “The digital space in India is witnessing major transformations lately and it will continue to evolve. The latest entrant to this is Internet of Things (IoT). With Government of India, kicking off Digital India Program with the aim of transforming India into digital empowered society IoT has already become the need of the hour.”

Mix of the technologies It would be unfair to consider IoT as a new technology. It is a mix of most of the technologies that has powered the world so far. IoT includes networking, datacenters, sensors, telecom and big data or analytics, among other things. “IoT can also be defined as interplay for software, telecom and electronic hardware industry and promises to offer tremendous opportunities for many industries. With the advent of the IoT, fed by sensors soon to number in the trillions, working with intelligent systems in the 7 Digital Terminal 01-15 March 2016

billions, and involving millions of applications, IoT will drive new consumer and business behavior that will demand increasingly intelligent industry solutions, which, in turn, will drive trillions of dollars in opportunity for IT industry and even more for

the companies that take advantage of the IoT,” described Bala Mahadevan, CEO, Orange Business Services, India.

Mr. Prabhu Ramachandran Director, WebNMS has shown its commitment by drafting policy to create a USD 15 billion IoT market place. However, it requires further research and development, and infrastructure development to encourage IoT adoption in the country.

The internet of things is expected to revolutionize the entire business landscape where getting intelligence would be much easier. “IoT is capable of bringing massive intelligence to the boardroom which will bring innovation in detecting business and intelligence threats, in solving problems, in creating more accurate reports and in evaluating system’s productivity,” opined Vishal Parekh, Marketing Director, Kingston Technology India. One of the key aspects of IoT is that it requires organizations to invest in new and scalable infrastructure to reap benefits of IoT. “To accommodate the development and support of smart devices, organizations have to update existing IT architectures and operating models. Router is one of basic requirement for IoT as it plays center hub to connect all devices with each other,” further suggested Bill Ye of TP-LINK India. “By deploying IoT, enterprises can become far more sustainable, cost efficient and enjoy overall improvement of

business returns. IoT would be a major

Mr. Vishal Parekh, MD, Kingston Technology, India component of the ‘Make in India’ movement. The technology aims to manage operations that are home grown as well as overseas. Another major aspect would be IoT’s role in ‘smart city’ market,” said Prabhu Ramachandran, Director, WebNMS.

Necessary Preconditions for IoT While IoT is a great leap into the future, it needs a few things in line to function well and give results. It is much more than what we already have. To make the IoT function in a proper manner, more work first needs to be done. There has to be more support for smart grids, traffic systems, and technologies that can handle increased data demands, like flash storage (SSD). Experts estimate that the IoT market could be worth as much as $1.7 trillion by 2020, with more than 50 billion devices connecting to the IoT by that time. “The future of IoT looks bright for India. The government is building better infrastructure, companies are coming out with innovative products, and industries understand the benefits the Internet of Things provides. The prediction regarding IoT use in India will come true if this progress continues at a large scale,” said Potnis. The IoT, however, comes with its own challenges, including a lack of standards, the ability to scale globally, security concerns, and an immature ecosystem. For vendors, there is no homogeneous IoT market – each industry and application is different. For users, especially IT organizations, there can be

issues of managing operational systems in an organization that might be culturally designed as a support organization, as well as dealing with the real-time demands of many IoT applications.

Mr. Andy Stevenson Managing Director for India, Fujitsu While India discusses, plans and designs smart cities, it needs to lay out high speed networks, modern datacen-

ters which are capable of doing every possible function. “Andhra Pradesh recently came up with a plan to turn the state into an IoT hub by 2020, aimed at bringing in greater collaboration from the private sector, creating over 50,000 jobs in different IoT verticals, and achieving a market share of at least 10 per cent in the country. Businesses especially stand to gain maximum value from IoT as it lets one connect anything that can be connected,” said Andy Stevenson, Managing Director, Fujitsu, India. Stevenson further outlined the requirements when he said, “The basic pre-requisite for the same is to have connected objects that can generate alerts and notification, and can facilitate remote access. Basic information support, and remote accessibility support are two important requirements for IoT in an organization.” Adding to this, Parekh of Kingston said, “It will help in making the right strategic choices, selecting the right partners, and leveraging best-of-breed technologies to quickly deliver the right smart city solutions that will result in

Cover Story immediate value and deliver a secure and scalable platform to unlock continuous new value.” Most of the experts believe that GPS and

RFID technologies are just the beginning. There is a lot more scope for the IoT to flourish and disrupt the market. “Yes, RFID and GPS is a very small part of the entire IoT scheme of things. It did

start with the RFID’s tagging but today it covers applications & uses in Medical & Healthcare, Hospitality, Transport, Manufacturing, Infrastructure etc,” added Halde of Kaspersky.

Addressing Sector Specific Challenges IoT holds the key to address several challenges that exist in most of the sectors today. Experts and technology sellers find IoT suitable for most of the sectors. This can solve many healthcare problems as the data collection can help in preventing outbreaks of diseases. Besides, it is effective in the retail sector where it would be easier to track goods and predict consumer demands. “Both RFIDS and GPS are part of an ecosystem which provides much needed information. Advancements in RFID technology requires full-time connectivity among consumers and enterprises alike. The systems should be able to collect

inputs from such sources and analyze them to build corrective action,” added Potnis of EMC. Effective utilisation of resources like water, fertilizers, etc. for high yield agriculture is one of the envisioned benefits of IoT in the agriculture sector. Plus, it brings predictability on demand supply requirements. IoT also sets to transform the transportation sector with intelligent traffic management contributing towards fast, safe and economic transportation. IoT has its own challenges though.

“Adopting the Industrial Internet of Things will require a change in the way organizations design and augment their industrial systems. IoT systems must be adaptive and scalable through software or added functionality that integrates with the overall solution,” further added Mahadevan of Orange Business Services. Looking at the wider scope of the Internet of Things, many enterprises have begun to invest in it. They are keen to transform their businesses and stay relevant to their customers where businesses are getting disrupted everyday.

Disaster Management

Disaster management is another area wherein IoT can be of great use. The recent floods in Chennai highlighted our poor state of preparedness to combat disasters, and while it isn’t possible to completely avoid one but at least the impact can be diminished.

Building the future Barely does anyone have doubts about the catalytic role which IoT is about to play in our lives tomorrow. This is the reason that most of the businesses and governments are looking at ways to make use of the IoT wave. While it is a powerful tool to deal with future and present challenges, it comes with its own perils. There are huge security concerns associated with IoT. It is believed that if the cybercriminals hack into the network 9 Digital Terminal 01-15 March 2016

they can control everything and unleash havoc in a city. There are chances that people are killed through hacking into home networks. Digital transformation threatens to become a profitable playground for sophisticated cybercriminals as the cost of data breaches hits $2.1 trillion globally by 2019, warns Juniper Research. “The majority of breaches are likely to come from attacks against existing IT and network infrastructure but

Internet of Things (IoT) devices may become future targets,” added Mahadevan of EMC. Nonetheless, IoT is maturing. It will be able to make the world a different place to live. India’s 100 smart cities are a first large scale step to do so. It remains to be seen how IoT transforms our future.

“ IOT CAN MAKE A REMARKABLE DIFFERENCE TO OUR LIFE “ Q

What does IoT mean for India?

IoT, at present, is at the centre of all major tech conversations on a global as well as national level. The implementation of IoT in India might have begun on a slow note but today it plays a key role in the growth and economic development of the country. The fact that the Government of India has invested a massive amount of money in its Digital India initiative itself resonates the importance of IoT in India’s scheme of things. Last April, the GoI launched a ‘Draft Policy on the Internet of Things’ aimed at using IoT for planning preventive and in-time maintenance of manufacturing verticals. In fact, the ecosystem of interconnected things and the technology that manages them is expected to have a market potential of $15 billion by 2020 in India, at a CAGR of over 28%. Andhra Pradesh recently came up with a plan to turn the state into an IoT hub by 2020, aimed at bringing in greater collaboration from the private sector, creating over 50,000 jobs in different IoT verticals, and achieving a market share of at least 10 per cent in the country. Businesses especially stand to gain maximum value from IoT as it lets one connect anything that can be connected.

IoT is in the spotlight for all the right reasons right now as it is being looked at as one of the ways to solve present day problems that exist in our lives. Andy Stevenson, Managing Director, Fujitsu India shares his insights with DT on IoT. Excerpts What are the basic requirements for IoT in any organizational set?

Q

Organizations are now steadily moving towards adoption of IoT. The basic prerequisite for the same is to have connected objects that can generate alerts and notification, and can facilitate remote access. Basic information support, and remote accessibility support are two important requirements for IoT in an organization.

Q

Does IoT mean more than RFIDS tags and GPS systems?

RFIDS tags and GPS systems are a crucial part of IoT but its usage goes way beyond these two components. Any

form of technology that can connect to the Internet falls under the IoT ecosystem, whether it is a smart watch or a robot or a car. IoT also encompasses machine-to-human communication, location based services, lab-on-chip sensors, and augumented reality to name a few. Network security too is an important part of IoT, keeping the malicious threats at bay. Wireless connectivity is yet another vital component of IoT as it facilitates quick deployment of sensors

Q

What is the role of IoT in smart cities?

India is at the apex of development, a big part of which is dedicated to smart cities. Technology and in turn IoT form the backbone of this entire smart cities project. Through integration of technology and information, IoT will provide the resources required to make the cities smart in terms of install01-15 March 2016 Digital Terminal 12

ing RFID tags, GPS sensor, scanners etc. In simple words, IoT will the key to achieving the intelligent management that smart cities promise. For instance, common issues like waste management, traffic jams can be dealt with by leveraging IoT. Automated alerts can assist in keeping a tabs on people who break the rules.

What are the security concerns and what are the ways to address them?

Q

IoT can be instrumental in the betterment of our lives but it brings with it substantial security concerns as well. While on one hand it connects multiple devices, it also automatically increases the susceptibility towards cyber-attacks. The basis of IoT is machine-to-machine connectivity, and if one connected network is hacked, then inadvertently all 13 Digital Terminal 01-15 March 2016

the connected networks will be affected. Ergo, one strike can lead to the fall of the entire system. As for securing the network from threat, a multi-step authentication process can be effective measure along with encrypted security gateways. The right to authenticate access should be restricted to the person responsible for security. Organizations should also develop the practice of creating possible threat models to understand the vulnerabilities, and accordingly place measures to combat them.

What are the areas where IoT will play a transformative role?

Q

IoT can make a remarkable difference to multiple problem areas of our life. The backbone of the country, agriculture, can benefit largely from implementation of IoT in the sector. Some important applications are:

• Traffic Management: The rise of wearable devices in the form of smart shirts, and smart bands have brought about an ease in the process of patient monitoring. Irrespective of the location, we are all plagued by traffic and transport woes which can effortlessly be eliminated with the help of IoT. Connected Homes: Connected homes are another avenue that can experience transformation through IoT. It provides ease of access to the consumer, allowing them to monitor and control the appliances remotely from one point. • Agriculture: Farmers will no longer have to depend on age-old machinery to gain access to information, and can automate the processes. • Disaster Management: Disaster management is another area wherein IoT can be of great use.

IS YOUR NETWORK IOT READY? By: Manish Bhardwaj, Sr. Marketing Manager, Middle East & Turkey at Aruba, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company While the Internet of Things (IoT) has been a popular buzz phrase for the last 18 months, the scale of devices to which it applies has been fairly limited. However, developments in network technology that will support the IoT as it comes of age, along with emerging use cases that will propel the mass deployment of IoT devices across the enterprise and in many vertical markets, are finally driving broader scale IoT deployments. IoT devices can drive significant improvement in business processes by delivering a level of knowledge about workflows that has never been available before. For example, by equipping IoT devices with location technology, a hospital can reduce the time required to transport critical equipment where it is needed most, saving costs but more importantly, lives. IoT devices will also enable machine-to-machine (M2M) processes, offloading labor-intensive procedures so companies can redirect their human resources to more crucial tasks.

Workintg on Wi-Fi IoT devices typically connect to WiFi networks directly or utilize Bluetooth tethering to a Wi-Fi device such as a tablet or smartphone for transport. With the pervasiveness of enterprise Wi-Fi networks, Wi-Fi will be the primary transport option. Bluetooth, or Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth LE) specifically, will be utilized as the edge connectivity when power requirements are constrained. As Bluetooth-based IoT devices are more widely deployed, Bluetooth LE technology will be integrated into some Wi-Fi access points to provide enhanced connectivity and management options. While several other wireless technologies have been considered for IoT devices, most manufacturers recognize the importance of limiting the breadth of connectivity options to allow for a richer experience and to promote interoper-

ability. The growth in IoT devices will introduce some significant challenges for businesses that embrace the technology. For example, while some IoT devices connect to application servers within the enterprise, the bulk of these devices today leverage cloud-based application servers and analytics systems that reside outside the enterprise, introducing security concerns. Enterprises will need to secure these devices to prevent them from becoming entry points for hackers to break into the enterprise. Also, because of the varying lifecycles of IoT devices—such as a refrigerator having a much longer lifecycle than a smartphone, as one example—ongoing support of firmware updates will vary dramatically, leading to a diverse set of capabilities across the IoT ecosystem. Some devices will receive firmware updates often and others will lack firmware updates or retain connectivity technology that will become antiquated due to their long product lifecycles. Enterprises will need to ensure that their networks support and provide security for legacy IoT devices that use yesterday's generation of wireless technology and that do not maintain security updates in the firmware over time.

IoT Infrastructure As enterprises begin building a network infrastructure to support the Internet of Things, they must address the following challenges: Device density on networks will soar. Previously, the number of devices on a network was tied directly to the number of people on the network. With the Internet of Things, devices will be associated with machines and processes as well as people. Enterprises must design their networks to support exploding device densities beyond what #GenMobile drove in the past year, upgrading their Wi-Fi networks to 802.11ac and ensuring that their edge access switches are

properly engineered to support the increased device density. IoT devices will introduce new potential security vulnerabilities. Enterprises will increasingly need to design their networks with firewalls that isolate the devices to prevent them from becoming a jumping-off point for hackers into the enterprise. With the number and variety of operating systems the devices will utilize, businesses will find it difficult to patch all the new security vulnerabilities the devices could introduce. Enterprises should consider segregating select IoT devices onto parallel networks, creating additional layers of security to protect sensitive data and applications. Some IoT devices will be sensitive to real-time operations or will require significant bandwidth for operation. To support this class of devices, enterprises need to make sure their infrastructure has the intelligence to automatically identify IoT devices and applications on the network and, subsequently, prioritize or police traffic based on administrator-configured policies. With the escalating number of IoT devices, management of these devices, including both configuration and monitoring, will be critical. Enterprises must enhance their network infrastructure to perform inventory of devices, configure device settings, monitor operations and the health of IoT devices, and manage device firmware where applicable.

As the IoT comes of age, enterprises need to look for network solutions that provide the connectivity and management capabilities that IoT devices will require as they become more pervasive, as well as secure their infrastructure against the new threats these devices can potentially introduce. 01-15 March 2016 Digital Terminal 16

Top 4G Smartphone Trends in the Market

T

he smartphones is turning smarter with each day passing. In India, the smartphone market has reached at an inflexion point where it is graduating to the next level with 4G network in place in most of the circles by operators such as Airtel and Vodafone. Reliance Jio is set to step into the 4G space aggressively later this year which will revolutionize the space. At the same time, this is boosting the Indian smartphone market significantly. Sensing the opportunity in the 4G space, most of the smartphone companies – Lenovo, Samsung, Xioami, Apple, Micromax, among others – have rolled out a variety of smartphones that come loaded with features. Of course, 4G and LTE is dubbed into them so that consumers do not have to struggle when the network is around the corner. Here are some of the 4G smartphone trends that are influencing the market at present.

Affordability: 4G under Rs 5000 A few years ago, it was hard to imagine a smartphone below Rs 5000. Today you not only get a smartphone in this range, but you get a 4G-enabled smartphone in this range. There are a lot of handsets that come from vendors such as Micromax, Lava and other Chinese players. But the biggest disruption was recently made when a new company Ringing Bells shook everyone with a 4G handset announcement for Rs 2,999. Many began to speculate the status of the company. But it ultimately shook the smartphone market. Experts believe that the market would witness more of these disruptions later this year.

Smartphone memory getting bigger The 4G smartphones have begun to sport bigger internal memory as the demand for storage is increasing day by day. The biggest storage ready handset include Samsung S6 and iPhone 6 which come with more than 120 GB internal memory. Catching up on the race are even smaller handset makers which are selling smartphones for at least 16GB

some of their smartphones. The minimum battery size is growing. Most of the latest smartphones are sporting a battery that boast of a full day or more battery life. It would be interesting to see where this battery war moves to in the future. Image Sourcehttp://domainmediacorp.com/

memory in the smartphones. As 4G is expected to require more memory, it is quite possible that handset makers offer more storage even in the entry level phones. Consumers will benefit.

RAM size is growing Yet another trend which the 4G smartphones are becoming akin to is larger RAM. The days of 1 GB RAM are already over. The minimum de-facto standard is 2GB RAM in the smartphones these days. This is required as the 4G phones consume a lot of memory while processing. Big RAM size allows consumers to run and play with multiple applications at the same time. The race to sport more RAM began with ASUS Zenfone 2 which came with 3GB RAM. Though the smartphone was not a huge success, it forced other vendors to launch phones that come with bigger RAM.

Battery Life Matters Consumers have always complained that their phones run out of battery during the day. This has come as an eye opener as well as a recipe for the smartphone vendors. They are claiming a battery life of more than two days in

Battle on the Processor Front

The 4G smartphones which are in vogue today come with processors that have more cores and better tuned to heavy workloads. Qualcomm Snapdragon processors and LTE modems support breathtaking speed, jaw-dropping graphics, ultra-fast connectivity and longer battery life on your mobile device. But, it is not the only one in the smartphone market. Mediatek is a major competitor along with Broadcom. Intel has also launched a range of processors to tap this market but it is just beginning for the PC chip maker.

Increase in the standard screensize In the 4G smartphones, 5 inches is the standard screen which consumers love to have. It allows them to easily browse through the phone and play with apps easily. In addition, it offers them a better viewing experience. Some of the smartphone vendors have experimented with larger screen size of 6 inches. However, consumers have showed their preference for 5 and 5.5 inches screen. Beyond this size, it is not easy to hold the phones in the hands.

India’s smartphone market is growing rapidly and now graduating to 4G as the network is around. This has given birth to a new range of smartphones that come loaded with different features. Let us take a look. 01-15 March 2016 Digital Terminal 26
