DG Message - Dil Se

Dear Friends , The journey so far in leading the District is a fabulous one. Though hectic, it is thoroughly enjoyable. Travelling is the key and my car travels about 10,000 kms in a month and my service fellow asked a question, Sir is your car a taxi these days ?? The OCVs are in full swing and it is indeed fascinating making more friends, understanding values and cultures of various clubs. It is too interesting to understand the innovative activities done by various clubs. RC of Narayangaon has been in existence in this small place for last 47 years and is working fabulous ever since. This year President Yogesh Bhide has lifted the club further to new heights. Another club which is progressing to new levels is Karvenagar under the able leadership of President Shirish Puranik. The medical support that they give to the Warkaris is unbelievable. A very

soft spoken leader is President Manohar Bodake who is quietly working away to strengthening his club. The progress by RC of Roha in a short span under the leadership of Vishwesh Vedak is indeed remarkable. Another club which has huge potential is RC Junnar Shivneri, President Bharat Kumar Chilap is quite a motivator. Walhekarwadi is unbeatable and hugely motivated in cleaning the Pavana river and it is indeed a herculean task. The ladies of Magarpatta Elite have been impeccable in their performance and Shrikant Patankar with his focus and commitment is clearing all boundaries for RC of Pune Sinhagad Road. President Sangeeta Maniyar a very pleasing lady has bonded Pune East in a remarkable manner and the club is heading to break all records in its entire history. The IFCR cricket meet was held in Pune from 29th Nov to 2nd Dec, the largest ever cricketing Fellowship meet in India wherein 30 teams participated. 400 plus Rotarians from all over India played hard cricket. The tournament opened in a lavish manner at J W Marriot and former Ranji player Shrikant Kalyani inaugurated the tournament. The prizes were given in another glittering ceremony at the hands of Padmabhushan Chandu Borde. I must appreciate the special effort of Dir. Amod Divekar and his

team led by Convenor Ganesh Kudale and Sunil Rohila for putting up an outstanding effort. In December we celebrate RYLA fortnight and more than 20,000 students are expected to be benefitted from this event which will be another landmark activity. The whole purpose is to not just to empower the youth but ensure that the District is 100 % Youth enabled. The District Conference ‘ SYMPHONY ‘at Sunny’s World on Sus Pashan Road is fast approaching and will be held on 1st to 3rd Feb . All members of my club RC Panvel are gearing up to put up a grand show. The venue is a showpiece and the faculties are powerful. Col Lalit Rai of Kargil fame, Social Reformer Bunker Roy from Rajasthan , the River Cleaning Man Arun Lakhani, the 3 times National award winner and the Man with the Midas Touch Art Director Nitin Desai and Spiritual Leader Gyanvatsal Swami are some of the prominent speakers at the event. We look forward to tremendous support for this event from the entire District. By the time I write for the next GML we will have entered into the new year, so wishing everybody a very Happy and Prosperous New Year in advance. DG Dr Shailesh Palekar

Article Writing Competition - Prize Winning Articles Congratulations to all Winners ! ‘My Rotary Moments’ I had been a Rotary Ann for 9 years, until one day, “MY ROTARY MOMENT” came by. It began in February 2016, when I was asked if I could choreograph a dance for the students of the Rotary Hearing-Impaired School. I immediately grabbed the opportunity; with initial skepticism as to how will I communicate with the children, who could neither hear nor speak. The first moment I laid my eyes upon

these kids, the first step that I took into the school, I felt like I was finally home. For days, all I taught them was dance, but what they taught me in return was a very important life lesson. “No matter where you stand in life, no matter what you don’t have; being happy is a very simple process, if only you focus on what you have”. I spoke 6 languages, and yet I wondered how to talk to them. The answer was simple, when I was with them, we spoke a language of LOVE. The kids accepted me as their own, and also taught me the sign language. Until now, I always felt the absence of

something unknown to me, but this experience changed something in me permanently. That reminds me of a quote “You never really leave the people you love, Part of them you take with you, Leaving a part of yourself behind”. With this magical experience, Rotary became a part of me and I became a part of Rotary.

bystander in the journey of ‘service above self’. At the core of ‘service above self’ is the power of empathy or being in someone else’s shoe. Rotary gave me opportunities to engage & build up empathy driven transactions. My journey started with just curiosity, slowly graduating into meaningful discovery. I continue to be intentionally aligned & intrinsically motivated towards the purpose each day. The tipping point, my Rotary Moment, happened unannounced in May 2017; when as President Elect, I started

mapping communities for making a difference. I visited 30 schools in Mulshi Taluka. The Rotary Moment occurred in dingy classrooms, on broken benches, in empty labs, but mostly in the bright, expectant eyes of school children. Tears welled up in my eyes as I went back to my own school days some forty years back. I pledged to make a difference to these kids. In my presidential year, we took one giant step towards adopting this community for three years & leapfrogged transforming 20 schools in one go.

saying she didn’t need to learn as her grandchildren were educated. Reluctantly yielding to my persuasion I had got her to hold a pen. I wrote her name in Marathi and asked her to trace the letters. I then moved on to help the others. It was an endearing sight to watch these ladies blush and cover their faces while writing their husband’s name. We entered the venue armed with paper, colourful sketch pens and alphabets charts. As we waded through the crowd someone clutched my hand. Clad in a 9 yard saree was a lady standing grinning from ear to ear,

refusing to let go of my hand. ‘Tai! I can write now!’ She smiled noticing my obvious confusion. ‘Tai, you taught me to write my name last year. Do you remember me?’ I don’t think I’ll ever hear anything sweeter than those words. That she recognised me and most importantly had persevered to learn was a golden moment indeed. Was there a bigger reward? Thank you Rotary!

Rtn. Dhwani Tanna Rotary Club of Panvel Industrial Town.

‘My Rotary Moments’ Malcolm Gladwell defines “Tipping Point” as “the moment of critical mass, the threshold, the boiling point”. For me Rotary Moment was a tipping point - transforming from being member of a Rotary club into a Rotarian. Like boiling erupts by never letting off heat, my Rotary Moment happened through accumulation & amalgamation of multiple such moments & insights. The transformation occurred when I took the plunge, refusing to be a

‘My Rotary Moments’ It was 8th July 2018. We were on way to conduct an adult literacy session for the Warkaris at Tarawade Garage. They were resting there for a day enroute to walking to Pandharpur with Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Palkhi. I wondered what this years’ experience would be. Most of the enthusiasts that took part had never held a pen in their lives. Used to wielding heavy farm equipment, a pen was like an alien object. Last year I recall a lady

Designated Month – Disease Prevention and Treatment ‘Prevention is better than Cure’ whoever penned this saying was apt then, now and will always be in future. Health is wealth. One can earn lost wealth again but to regain lost health one may need ‘A_¥V’ or elixir. Rotary International is becoming that ‘elixir’ to the people who need medical attention. How? We all know that one cannot prevent diseases, but yes, we can stop spread of diseases. AWARENESS about the diseases and its mode of spread is a must. This is where Rotary plays a significant role. Rotary is putting its best efforts to prevent the misery and pain that the people are suffering from. Some efforts taken by Rotary are enormous, and some are small. One such larger than life success is Polio Eradication. Rotary is also active in stopping the spread of Ebola virus. Besides this, Rotary is involved in the collection of blood and maintaining blood donation banks, so that blood is readily available to people in need. By building

training centers and hospitals, they are working in tandem with the government to achieve the best results. They provide clean water to avoid the spread of water-borne diseases like Cholera, Hepatitis, diarrhoea, etc. ‘Strike at the root’ is the motto in case of HIV spread. Rotary once again wants to rise and use its inherent strength to address the challenges posed by measles and rubella. Vaccination is a simple solution to these two diseases. A Major Global Grant Project taken up by our District is “Prevention of Cervical Cancer” which is the second most common cancer in India after breast cancer. A simple vaccination given to girls at an early age of 9-14 years can prevent their lives from this dreadful disease. To achieve all this, Rotary is creating awareness about the importance of regular health check-ups. Rotary is educating people and equipping them to fight the diseases before the need for treatment arises. Still, more efforts need to be put up by us all, Rotarians.

Hope all Rotarians and I are on the same page. ‘Disease Prevention and Treatment’ is not just one of the focus areas but it is the need of the hour.

Rtn Pankaj Shah District Director – Service Projects and Co-Director CSR Rotary has worked in Ghana to provide clean water to fight Guinea worm disease. In Liberia, Rotary is helping women to get tested for HIV early in their pregnancies. The prenatal care has reduced new HIV infections in children by 95 percent. There have been tremendous efforts by Rotarians to control Malaria in African & Asian countries. The efforts have certainly started showing results. Contributed by Rtn Shivajirao Patil.

Fighting Modern Slavery Dave McCleary was volunteering at a youth conference in 2012 when a young woman named Melissa explained how she had ended up in the sex trade. She was living in a nice suburb of Atlanta, Georgia, USA, when a young man knocked on her door and offered her a job as a model. The man turned out to be a pimp, who lured her into prostitution through a combination of drugs, threats, and coercion. “She was from my town, and was living in an apartment where my wife used to live before we got married,” remembers McCleary, a member of the Rotary Club of Roswell. “After the presentation, a member of my club gave her a big hug. I asked how he knew her, and he said she used to babysit his kids when she was 12. That’s when I realized this wasn’t someone else’s problem. This is happening all around us.” McCleary is now co-chair of the Rotarian Action Group Against Slavery, which has been coordinating Rotary clubs’ efforts to fight slavery since 2013. A big challenge for the group has been motivating clubs to act. The immense scale of the problem can be daunting. The Global Slavery Index estimates that, worldwide, 40.3 million people are subject to some form of slavery:

bonded labor, forced labor, child slavery, sex trafficking, or forced marriage. Through Freedom United’s website, Rotary clubs of any size can sign up to form “freedom rings” which raise community awareness of slavery while sharing information. People are invited to join the ring. “These rings are inspired out of a Rotary club but also pull from the larger community,” says Joe Schmidt, CEO of Freedom United. “We have a series of things they can choose to do. We ask them to keep it pretty simple and laser-focused on one particular project.” “There were maybe 200 to 400 groups just in the U.S. working on modern slavery topics. However, they are all disjointed with no common platform,” Schmidt says. “It sparked in us a connection between Freedom United’s interest in taking our massive online community down to the grassroots level and Rotary’s ability to provide hundreds of groups all over the world who would be foot soldiers in this fight.” Schmidt says Rotary’s experience with polio eradication shows the ability of Rotary members to tackle tough issues. “Rotary’s patience in committing to a cause and its track record with polio

Rotary and community members gather to learn more about fighting modern slavery.

have shown that Rotarians are willing to take mature, committed action toward long-term global change, even if it doesn’t give immediate gratifying results,” he says. Rotary clubs have been supporting anti-slavery organizations for over a decade. In one of the larger efforts, 14 Rotary clubs led by the Rotary Club of Dunbar, Lothian, Scotland, opened a vocational training center for trafficking survivors in Kalimpong, India, in 2015. The project was funded in part by a Rotary Foundation grant. The group plans to add a home for women and girls freed from slavery. 5 Hard facts on modern child slavery n

Dear friends, ONE UNIVERSE ONE EARTH ONE WORLD ONE GREAT ROTARY FAMILY YES! It is indeed our extended family and I am sure that each one of you is privileged and proud to be part of this family. It is hard to believe that we are at the halfway mark of rotary year already. If you ever doubted the veracity of adage ‘TIME RUNS FAST’, you should preside a rotary club. You all are aware that this year we have embarked on a journey of different kind to achieve benchmark in our rotary district.

Our ALL WOMEN CAR RALLY was very much appreciated and liked by all not only in our district but all over India and has got wide coverage in Rotary News. The 2nd event which all the Ann’s enjoyed was RETRO THEME PARTY - a program BY THE ANNS and FOR THE ANNS. The evening was full of entertainment with various group dance competitions between the clubs followed by the DJ. I am happy to share that 200 Anns participated in this event. I thank wholeheartedly all the presidents and First Ladies who took part in this wonderful event. I take this opportunity to thank you all for bestowing so much love and affection during DG VISITS. These memories will remain forever itched in my heart and mind -memories to cherish !!

RYE Inbound students of 3131 enjoying Rajasthan their eyes! The hospitality with RC Jaipur. Don’t we all feel extremely relieved and happy after seeing our guests enjoying our hospitality and culture? I am writing this bit with the exact same feeling! And why not? The exchange students of RYE, who arrived in India in hopes of an excellent exchange year, had a great amount of fun on the Rajasthan tour organized by RYE District 3131! This year, we have 19 students from the USA, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Spain, France and Argentina in our district. As part of this program, we at District 3131 conducted a Rajasthan tour for students in this district. It delights me to tell you that the exchange students were in awe while exploring the forts, deserts, palaces and streets of Rajasthan. The rich heritage of India was right before

trip might be over since last few days, but even till today, the exchange students are mentioning how wonderful the trip has been for all of them. During this tour, RYE students travelled to Jaipur and due to the efforts and good will of PDG Prashant Deshmukh, Rotary Jaipur sponsored their two-day stay and these students got authentic Rajasthani experience which is expected in such a cultural exchange. We express our gratitude to PDG Rtn. Ashok Gupta RID 3054 and his spouse Rtn. Rekha Gupta for arranging joint inter-district meeting with two clubs for our Inbounds. Their helpful gesture truly deserves applause! It is unique for Dist 3131 to offer such an opportunity to RYE. A million Kudos to team RYE to receive this milestone and tons of gratitude to the man behind the scenes - PDG Prashant Deshmukh. Rotary does continue helping and inspiring us always, doesn’t it? Rtn. Kranti Shah Inbound Chair RYE.
