The Vibrancy March : 2016-17 Dear Fellow Rotarians and Rotary Family Members Warm Greetings ! Ever since I became a Rotarian, I had strong desire to lead the District 3131 and since I have passion of writing, I keep writing letters / articles on Rotary! The journey from Rotary Member to a Club Committee Member cannot be forgotten as I enjoyed each and every moment of it. I was thrilled to get introduced to great, involved Rotarians, stalwarts in their vocation and Profession, yet working hard so religiously to Serve Humanity and Be a gift to the world. I was more so fascinated when I became the President of my club RCP Uptown - the journey so very different, interesting and demanding, the lessons of leading all the leaders was a learning experience. Exercises such as goal setting and the schematic approach to achieve success increased my desire to go up the ladder in the organisation beyond club level. The horizons widen as one dives into the ocean of district activities and effective outreach matters. One needs to learn to adjust to

other leaders in the team and become a Performing Team Leader giving Strength and Confidence to the Team Leader. Supplementing his/ her goals with innovative concepts of success is all that the Team Leaders need. Your initiative, involvement and actions inspire others and comforts the Team Leader. Well, the journey has put me on to lead the District this Year! It all started with Team appointments a s s i g n m e n t s , Tr a i n i n g a n d motivation. Ambitious Assistant Governors, Smart Secretaries, Sweet Sixteen Presidents, Dynamic Directors all started exhibiting those Royal Blue coloured Jackets messaging proudly VR4 16 (We are for Sixteen!) The theme Jackets have become more popular than ever before and speak volumes of dreams, those will get unfolded as year passes by day after day! Ever since I met this warm personality Dr. Manoj Desai, I have been highly impressed and we are all lucky to have him as RI Director in our vibrant year 2016-17 ! He calls all of us, the District Governors from India as Smiling Sheriffs and that inspired me to name my Presidents 2016-17 as

Sweet 16s ! The year 2016-17 is also a Historic Year. TRF shall be celebrating Centennial Year Worldwide With the “GIVING” hands of Rotarians spreading over the communities as never before. We i n I n d i a w i l l b e b u s y constructing Wash Rooms in Schools, Training Students & Teachers to use and maintain them, training teachers to bring Innovation in Education and Building Happy Schools of world class. Celebrating TRF Centennial year, 2016-17 There are 1.2 million Rotarians in 35,000 clubs doing good all over the world. Each club is a local network of Rotarians who are business, professional, and community leaders and invest their time/money and their resource to advance the Objects of Rotary. Our purpose of being a Rotarian is to undertake community service. The Rotary Foundation (TRF) is our charity arm for doing good in the world.. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world. We should not live for ourselves alone, but for the joy in doing good for others.” – Arch Klumph, founder of TRF. The Rotary Foundation was created in 1917 by Rotary International's sixth president, Late Arch C. Klumph, as an

endowment fund for Rotary "To do good in the world." It has grown from an initial contribution of US$26.50 to more than US$1billion. The Rotary Foundation transforms your Donation into projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. As the charitable arm of Rotary, TRF taps into a global network of Rotarians who invest their time, money, and expertise into our priorities, such as eradicating polio and promoting peace. Foundation Grants empower Rotarians to approach challenges such as poverty, illiteracy and malnutrition with sustainable solutions that leave a lasting impact. Strong financial oversight, a stellar charity rating, and a unique funding model mean that we make the very most of your contribution.

RY 2016-17 will be a very special year because TRF will celebrate its centenary during this year. The best way for Rotary Clubs in RID 3131 to make this celebration memorable will be to maximize giving to TRF. One favorable development which will greatly help in this effort is that beginning in Rotary year 2016-17, a three year pilot program is being launched by TRF in India to accept contributions under mandatory Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) spending. This has been approved by TRF Trustees in their April 2016 meeting. Rotary Foundation (India), the associate foundation of TRF, will be ready to open its doors to accept CSR funds in the coming months and the necessary CSR processes and procedures

Women in Rotary The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary. It's been only 27 years since a US Supreme Court ruling opened the door for women's membership in Rotary International. Among the more than 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide, women account 15% internationally. Late Ether Johnson was the first Lady Rotarian admitted in 1989. We have a huge opportunity in RID 3131 to attract many lady professionals/entrepreneurs in Rotary. Hence, our avenue will be working on several events / programs to spread message of Rotary amongst Non Rotarian Women workgroups. I appeal all Clubs to admit lady Rotarians having professional background as new members. We still have many clubs not having a single lady Rotarian. We have more than 15 women as Club Presidents in RY 2016-17. Let this number rise in subsequent years. Rtn Gauri (Sonia) Shikarpur Director -WIR (2016-17)

M E M B E R S H I P MOHEEM : MISSION MEMBERSHIP Greetings from Dist. Membership Team 16-17 ! The Rotary year 16-17 begins with new challenges on membership. This year the goal set by our Dist is 1500 (net) new members. All of us are aware that RI membership number is stuck on 1.2 million since last 25 years. We n e e d t o w o r k m o r e innovatively on membership growth & retention. This year our membership team along with our leader DGE Prashant and Dist. Trainer Deepak have set challenging goals and thought of novel ideas to achieve those. MEMBERSHIP GOALS (Without compromising on Quality) • New members to be added – 1500+ (net) • Normal club efforts – 700 + • Club extension 15 new clubs

of 30 nos each – 450 + • Young members – 150+ • Lady members – 300+ • Reconnect past members – 100+ • Revitalization of clubs (Min. 5) – 100+ • Retention – 95% COL (April, 2016) has allowed dual membership for our Rotractors which can help us to add more young members. Our Woman in Rotary (WIR) team led by Rtn IPP Gauri is also helping clubs to add more women members. Our Sweet Sixteen Presidents have already started working on membership goals and are adding 10 to 15% new members on their installation day. With this we are confident that minimum 500 members will be added in the month of July and 750 members till August end.

We have collected club wise data of almost 4500 past members who have left Rotary in last 5 years. This data has been forwarded to all presidents and we expect to get back at least 150 members through this reconnect drive. We must work on improving public image of Rotary in the community at large. Our Dist. team has come out with various ideas which will help us to add more members. We request every member to suggest or get one new member to create a database of prospective members. We have planned two major membership events. “August Awards” is planned on 17th August. Top performers will be awarded / recognized by our Leaders. Another major event is organized in January, 2017 where we plan new member orientation and expect minimum 1000 new members to participate in this event.

To exceed our targets, I request all the Rotarians to come up with different creative ideas. I am confident, with your active support and help, we will do wonders and create history in membership. I wish you all the best ! Rtn. Ratnakar Bagul Director - Membership 2016-17

The word SYNERGY is explained as 'The combined power of a group of things when they are working together that is greater than the total power achieved by each working separately'. It is simply 'Working Together' where the collective effort produces bigger output than the sum of the individual efforts. In Rotary, that is exactly the aim of Synergy. In our District there are over 120 clubs, each with its own strengths, capabilities and resources. Clubs also have some weaknesses, needs and shortcomings. Our clubs and members have been doing tremendous work in spite of their difficulties. This only indicates that if the clubs are facilitated to overcome their handicaps, they can not only do what they have been doing, but can do much more, much better, much more effectively. As many of us know, some clubs have financial r e s o u r c e s b u t i n s u ff i c i e n t manpower, while others have willing volunteers and ideas, but do not have funds. There are clubs with strong administrative

The District Synergy Team has been charged with this responsibility – to enable clubs to do better by matching the strengths of various clubs with weaknesses, wherever they exist. Members of District Synergy team are all experienced Rotarians, with deep knowledge and clear thoughts about their goals. As a first step, the team has grouped District 3131 clubs into 4 categories as follows: • Category A: Clubs active in all avenues, including Global Grant Project, approx 30 clubs • Category B: Clubs active in most avenues but slipping in some areas, approx 40 clubs • Category C: Clubs inactive in many areas and needing help, approx 30 clubs

• Category D: Inactive or barely active clubs, approx 23 clubs This categorization has been based on the clubs current measured performance and not on any subjective assessment. Synergy team will aim to enable all weak clubs stand on their own feet, to facilitate utilization of hidden capabilities existing within clubs. It will strengthen bonds between clubs needing help with clubs with experience & strength and to internalize the process of synergy within pairs of clubs. How will this be done? It will be done by encouraging weak clubs to identify their own hidden strengths and to focus on independent projects to utilize such strengths. Zonal Synergy Directors will coordinate interactions between pairs of synergized clubs. Multiple club Synergy activities (more than 2 clubs) will also be welcomed. Geographical proximity will be given high priority in pairing of clubs. Synergy action requires each pair

Perpetrators have no religion, caste, creed or color and no restrictions on place or distance worldwide, having unregulated access possible for any child in any corner of the world. It is a scientific fact, that rehabilitation of a child sex offender is almost impossible and that he or she will repeat the act of abuse at the earliest opportunity. Governments across world have a zero tolerance policy to child sex abuse and have to do their best to co-operate in case of cross border offences. The child sex offender could be already in your home, just a click away, no matter wherever you are living on this globe.

most of us do not want to face or address this issue. All recent reports across the world show a steady rise in the number of children being abused online with most disturbing effects such as depression and suicide. Delivery mechanisms of education are heavily relying on technology, encouraging children across the world to spend more time on the internet. A Safe internet is therefore a prerequisite.

Happy Village is a RI District 3131 initiative. There are around 125 Clubs in our Rotary District, while there are approx 3700 villages in our geographical area. Thus, we have roughly 30 villages per club. Each Rotary Club can target at least one village to focus and concentrate all its service activities in that one location. Each Club can focus attention on one village and work towards achieving sustainable and holistic developments of these villages on a long term. In many villages in our region,

V I L L A G E despite heavy rainfall, the villages face water shortages in summer. The schools cater to children from 1st to 7th standard, but lack basic facilities. The villagers just depend on the farming and farm produces which are not sufficient. They are not aware of the various Govt. schemes. The young generation is migrating to towns and cities leaving old and very old and few children behind. The work will involve many years of untiring efforts right from changing the mindset of the villagers.

MEGA TREE PLANTATION PROJECT RID 3131 Partners with Govt. of Maharashtra

Rotary District 3131 Governor Prashant Deshmukh plans an ambitious Mega Tree Plantation Project in association with Government of Maharashtra (Forest Department) on the First Day of New Rotary Year - 1st July 2016 !!

Rotary to plant 2 Lac Trees on July 1st , 2016 Rotary District 3131 Governor Prashant Deshmukh plans an ambitious Mega Tree Plantation Project in association with Government of Maharashtra (Forest Department) on the First Day of New Rotary Year that is 1st July 2016 !! The background – Rotary District 3131 comprises of 124 Rotary clubs from Raigad and Pune districts. For many years all of them conducted 'tree plantation' as a project either individually or at times jointly with other clubs according to convenience of each club. As the result, by the end of monsoon, a few thousand trees were planted every year, scattered over two districts. This year however with the enthusiasm of Rtn Pienaal Waankhaday , Rtn. Devavrat Shahane, Rtn. Sudhanshu Gore., all the clubs are planning to make it a mega event by performing plantation on a single day, simultaneously all over the district. They contacted the Forest Department for supply of saplings and the department invited the Rotarians to join the Maharashtra government's st ambitious plan of plantation on 1 July, all over Maharashtra.

o f o u r C h i e f M i n i s t e r. Accordingly, at every site, the Forest Department is going to make all necessary arrangements for plantation. The pits, saplings of minimum 3 feet height, enriched soil and watering, all these will be taken care of by staff of Forest Department. The Rotary clubs are registering volunteers for this event. It is online registration through club presidents of the year 2016 – 17. The villagers near the plantation sites are also going to join the campaign. They may participate plantation activity or may act as support to volunteers by making food for them, supplying drinking water, etc. Thus, people are involved at various levels. The government, NGO and citizen shall be working hand in hand for a greater cause.

The interaction –The Chief Conservator (regional) of forest called a meeting with DG. Rtn. Prashant Deshmukh and Convener of COPs Rtn. Anand Khairnar. After due deliberations both the parties agreed upon a formula to materialize the dream

The process – All the 124 Rotary clubs will be engaged in tree st plantation on 1 July 2016, on the sites suggested by the Forest Department. Every club will register minimum 100 volunteers. The registered volunteers shall go to plantation

sites by own vehicles or transport arranged by clubs. Once on the spot, they will start plantation work in groups as guided by forest departmental staff. It is expected that every volunteer will plant 25 to 40 plants depending upon individual vigor, terrain and climatic conditions on the spot. After completion of work, volunteers will be served a working lunch by local people. The result – According to our thinking, this is not simply an event of plantation. A greater

purpose of making all sections of society involved in the activity, all Maharashtrians engaged in the same activity at a particular time, though away from each other, government inviting people to join hands in its activity and people responding in positive manner are a few of the indirect benefits to the society. If such activities continue, in the long run, our democracy will be fitting into the definition given by Abraham Lincoln “of the people, by the people, for the people”

Zdm JSr, Zdm amO Come July and everything changes in the Rotary world. It is like playing a new game, start fresh, no hang ups, no plusses or minuses of the last game! From Rotary club to Rotary international, everywhere we see this new beginning. New Leaders, new board, new ideas, new projects & new members being inducted ! I feel, one of the reasons of why Rotary is still very popular and going from strength to strength in the world, is because we change every year. These 365 days give you the opportunity to prove yourself to the world, to tell your ideas and make them happen, to change the community around you. This is the time to show your potential, your leadership skills, your fund raising capability, your ability to work with others and your ability to bring about the change in the club and the society . That instills the sense of urgency in you and then the kinetic energy starts rolling! Many times, I have felt that there is a lot of similarity in Rotary and our mother nature… May is very hot and sunny, the energy levels are low, you do not feel like working, just waiting for the rains to arrive. July is the month when Monsoon arrives and everything looks fresh and green. The rivers

and rivulets flow freely bringing new water and new energy with them. In Rotary too, the same thing happens! July is the month of making new promises, starting new projects and bringing in the new members. Diversity is our culture. This diversity helps us to bring the change which every one loves. Some ideas which are never thought of or executed start in the new year. If we look back at the year which just concluded, we have seen lot of innovations! IPDG Subodh Joshi and his team took lot of efforts to take our district in a giant leap forward towards a truly digital district. RI President K.R.Ravindran was truly impressed with him and recommended RI General Sec. John Hewko to visit him. Thanks to him, that at the click of button, now we can see the projects done by our entire district. Today we can proudly say that we have touched few lac lives and have done the projects worth 40 crores! To speak his language, Rotary district 3131 is now 40 crore company! The Presidents could upload the projects online, did submit attendance reports electronically & even applied for the awards electronically. Lot of man hours and stationary was saved. Now our district website is getting integrated with RI website

and it is happening for the first time! He could do majority of the district events free for those who registered online. It was a very well executed plan by his team. His entire team worked tirelessly throughout the year. Let us give them a great applause! DG Prashant plans to achieve even more. He plans to continue all the good things which started last year and take a leap forward on this sound base. I know Prashant for many years. In fact he and myself were batch-mate Presidents in 1998-99. That time too, he had bagged the award for "Outstanding Rotary President". DG Prashant is a perfectionist and very methodical person. His presentation skills are very good. Being an architect, art is in his blood and he has envisioned the grand plans for the year, which only an architect can visualize! All the Dist. training programs conducted so far have been very successful and effective. He plans to set the new landmarks in membership and Rotary foundation. All his team is working with great enthusiasm and precision. We are likely to see Who's who of the Rotary world visiting our district in this year! We shall witness the results as the year starts unfolding. It is quite natural that his enthusiasm has already percolated to his entire
