PIONEERS IN CIVIL ENGINEER

Late Shri. S.B. Joshi Born - Jan 1906. Died – Sept 1991

It was the period of National Independence Movement, when Shri. S.B. Joshi graduated in Civil Engineering from our College in 1927. He then joined Govt. Service on Sakkar Dam Project. All senior engineers and administrators were British officers. Shri. S.B. Joshi with his patriotic spirit could not get along with the Govt. service. He left the job and truly nationalist spirit took to wearing khadi, a white pyjama, kurta and Gandhi cap. His wore simple villager dress, ‘barabandi’ throughout his life. After leaving prestigious and remunerative Govt. Job, he joined the construction company of M/s. Phatak and Walchand Hirachand and very soon decided to start his own construction company. One of his early construction projects in Pune is the guest house in Bhandarkar Institute campus known as Hyderabad Guest House. This is the first R.C.C. building in Pune planned, designed and constructed by Shri. S.B. Joshi. He later shifted to Mumbai and entered the important and onerous field on Bridge Construction. His special choice was to provide alternative for the proposed bridge with his own design and technique. He started his construction business in Maharashtra with construction of bridges in Nasik and Konkan regions, however, the work and fame of M/s. S.B. Joshi &Co. soon spread to Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Orissa, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and literally all over India. Shri. S.B. Joshi carried out advances in the technique and methodology by adopting bold designs such a balanced cantilever, R.C.C. Box girders, bowstring girders, prestressed concrete bridges. He has shown courage in suggesting self anchored suspension bridge for Barak Bridge in Assam and 150m span stayed Girder Bridge on Ganga River at Allahabad. He had always in mind to propagate furtherance of latest technology, materials, and aesthetics and to have economics in construction in India. He encouraged and trained young enterprising engineers to come forward and shoulder the responsibilities of executing the bridges. Shri. S.B. Joshi inspired them and developed confidence in them to undertake the major responsibilities. About 8 to 10 engineering firms engaged at present in bridge construction are his greatest contribution to construction industry in India. The engineers of these firms are trained in S.B. Joshi School. All of them are quality conscious. Shri. S.B. Joshi’s other most outstanding contribution is to formulate ‘Codes and Standards’ for concrete and bridges. He was a very active member of various codes and standards committee of Indian Road Congress and the Institution of Engineers (India). He was President of Institution of Engineers (India) in 1954-55. Shri. S.B. Joshi, by nature was a great teacher. He would have attained higher honors in teaching profession, if he had continued the same. Shri. S.B. Joshi was responsible to help “New Engineering College” to be established at Sangli. In the early days of the college, he used to visit it periodically to teach the students. He had a good command over Law and Sanskrit. He translated in chaste lyrics Marathi, Ajavilap and Ritusanhar.

It is a part of the Union Square project built on top of Kowloon Station. The development is owned and jointly developed by MTR Corporation Limited and Sun Hung Kai Properties, Hong Kong's metro operator and largest property developer respectively. It is currently the world's fifth tallest building by height, world's third tallest building by floors, as well as the tallest building in Hong Kong. Known in development as Union Square Phase 7, its current name was officially announced in 2005. The International Commerce Centre was completed in phases from 2007 to 2010. The tower opened in 2011, with the Ritz-Carlton opening in late March and the observatory in early April. Sun Hung Kai Properties also developed, along with another major Hong Kong developer, Henderson Land, the second-tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong, the 2 International Finance Centre, which is located directly across Victoria Harbour in Central, Hong Kong Island. Development The height had been scaled back from earlier plans due to regulations that did not allow buildings to be taller than the surrounding mountains. The original proposal for this building was called Kowloon Station Phase 7 and it was designed to be 574 m (1,883 ft) tall with 102 floors.[7] It would have risen 162 m (531 ft) over the then-current tallest in Hong Kong, 2 International Finance Centre. The tower was designed by the American architectural firm Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF) in association with Wong & Ouyang (HK) Ltd.
