PERSONALITY OF THE MONTH
Raghunath Anant Mashelkar President of Global Research Alliance, President of India's National Innovation Foundation
D
r. Mashelkar had a very difficult childhood. He went to school barefoot and almost gave up studies although he managed to be a rank holder Matriculation exam. His mother could not support his college education. He was very influenced by what his Science teacher Mr. Bhave told him during one of the science experiments. The children were concentrating magnifying lens upon a paper until it burns. When it started burning Bhave Sir, pointed Dr. Mashelkar and said, "Dr. Mashelkar, this lens is you! If you concentrate on studies then one day you will reach the sky". Dr. Mashelkar studied at the University of Bombay's Department of Chemical Technology (now the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai) where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in Chemical engineering in 1966, later on a Ph.D. degree in 1969. He was the youngest Director of National Chemical Laboratory and served for over eleven years as the director general of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, world's largest chain of publicly funded industrial R&D institutions, with thirtyeight laboratories and about 20,000 employees. Dr. Mashelkar is presently the president of Global Research Alliance, a network of publicly funded research and development institutes from Asia-Pacific, South Africa, Europe and USA with over 60,000 scientists. He is also the President of India's National Innovation Foundation. Dr. Mashelkar is the former President of the Indian National Science Academy and the UK Institution of Chemical Engineers (2007-8). He is the third Indian engineer to have been elected as fellow of Royal Society (FRS), London in the twentieth century.
He was elected foreign associate of the United States National Academy of Sciences in 2005, only the 8th Indian since 1863 to be selected. On 28 April 2008, he was elected as the foreign associate of Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. He is the first Indian to have received this honour. He was elected foreign fellow of US National Academy of Engineering (2003), Fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering, UK (1996), and Fellow of World Academy of Art & Science, USA (2000). Twenty-six universities have honoured him with honorary doctorates, which include University of London, University of Salford, University of Pretoria, University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and Delhi University. In August 1997, Business India named Dr. Mashelkar as being among the 50 path-breakers in the post- Independent India. In 1998, Dr. Mashelkar won the JRD Tata Corporate Leadership Award,[8] the first scientist to win it. In June, 1999, Business India did a cover story on Dr. Mashelkar as "CEO OF CSIR Inc.", a dream that he himself had articulated, when he took over as DG, CSIR in July 1995. On 16 November 2005, he received the BusinessWeek (USA) award of Stars of Asia' at the hands of George H.W. Bush, the former President of USA. He was the first Asian Scientist to receive it. He has been a much sought after consultant for restructuring the publicly funded R&D institutions around the world; his contributions in South Africa, Indonesia and Croatia have been particularly notable. The Udaan Mantra: If you are a lens and you concentrate and focus hard on a certain objective, you will certainly gather enough energy the burn the track and sore high to reach the sky.

PIONEERS IN CIVIL ENGINEER Name: M. V. Vishweshwaraiah also known as Sir MV Dare of Birth: 15 Sept. 1860 Place of Birth: Muddenahalli village near Bangalore Life sketch: Visvesvaraya lost his father at the age of 15. Although all his education was from Karnataka, he was a Civil Engineering student of College of Engineering, Pune. Career brief: • 1912 to 1919: Diwan of Mysore • He joined Public Works Department (PWD) of Bombay Province and was later invited to join the Indian Irrigation Commission. • He implemented an extremely intricate system of irrigation in the Deccan area. • He designed and patented a system of automatic weir water floodgates that were first installed in 1903 at the Khadakvasla Reservoir near Pune. These gates were employed to raise the flood supply level of storage in the reservoir to the highest level likely to be attained by a flood without causing any damage to the dam. • The same model was installed at the Tigra Dam in Gwalior and the Krishnaraja Sagara (KRS) Dam in Mandya/ Mysore, Karnataka. • In 1906-07, Government of India sent him to Eden to study water supply and drainage system. His project was implemented in there successfully. • He was the chief designer of the flood protection system for the city of Hyderabad. • He also was instrumental in developing a system to protect Visakhapatnam port from sea erosion. • Visvesvaraya supervised the end to end construction of the KRS Dam across the Cauvery River. This dam created the biggest reservoir in Asia when it was built. • Under the Patronage of Mysore Government he was responsible for the founding of, the Mysore Soap Factory, the Parasitoide Laboratory, the Mysore Iron & Steel Works (now known as Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Limited) in Bhadravathi, the Sri Jayachamarajendra Polytechnic Institute, the Bangalore Agricultural University, the State Bank of Mysore, The Century Club, Mysore Chambers of Commerce and numerous other industrial ventures. He was also associated with the Tata Group of companies, helping them in the management. He was also associated with Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO). In 1925, when the Bhadravati Iron factory was in danger of being shut down due to dismal performance, he toured Sweden, England, America and Germany, most times at his own cost, to understand the iron manufacturing process firsthand. Achievements and Accolades: • Recipient of the India’s highest honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1955. • Knighted as a Commander of the Indian Empire by King George V for his myriad contributions to the public good. • He was rightly called the "Father of modern Mysore state" • Sir M.V. was honored with honorary membership of the international Institution of Civil Engineers, London • Fellow of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore • He was awarded several honorary doctoral degrees like D.Sc., LL.D., D.Litt. from eight universities in India. • He was president of the 1923 Session of the Indian Science Congress. • Pandit Nehru was well aware of Visvesvaraya’s extraordinary abilities as an engineer as well as a statesman and used it well for nation building by including him in planning commission and economic association. • Author of book “Planned Economy for India”, published in 1934, about the importance of estimating national income and achieving a society with a minimum level education, healthcare and opportunities for productive work, where he voiced that the path towards this as Industrialization. • His birthday is celebrated as World Engineers Day worldwide as an honor t for this great technocrat and visionary 6
CAPITA L ABU D GATE, HABI – UAE This leaning structure is actually the most “inclined” building in the world (leaning at 18 degrees westward!), thus beating by far the record held by the Tower of Pisa. It has 35 floors, and it is 160 meters (520 ft) high. Certainly in order to cope with the gravity issues, the designers have made use of breakthrough engineering methods such as stacking floor plates vertically, which would allow the building to lean safely. It has a floor area of 53,100 sq. meters (5,72,000 sq.ft.), and it uses the “diagrid” building model, just as Hearst Tower did. The diagrid pattern allows for a much better distribution of the weight, and it also allows for using less steel than a building of its size would normally have to.
