PIONEERS IN CIVIL ENGINEER

NAME - HENNING HOLCK-LARSEN Born - 4th July, 1907 at Frederiksberg, Denmark Died - July 27, 2003 Mumbai, India Known For - Co- Founder of Larsen & Tourbo. Children - Jeannette Arnold (Daughter)

Henning Holck-Larsen was educated at the University of Copenhagen (and what is now the Technical University of Denmark). He came to India in 1937 as a chemical engineer working for F. L. Smidth & Co. of Copenhagen. Partnering with his former schoolmate and fellow employee Søren Kristian Toubro, he set up Larsen & Toubro in 1938. The idea of L&T was conceived during a holiday in Matheran, a hill station near Bombay (now Mumbai). Holck-Larsen was a risk-taker while Toubro was more conservative.Larsen and Toubro saw opportunities in India at time, when few Europeans had realized the country's potential for industrial growth. The first office of L&T, located in Bombay, was so small that only one of them could use it a time. Initially, L&T represented Danish dairy equipment manufacturers. However, the Danish imports were restricted during the World War II, forcing L&T to start a small workshop that provided servicing and undertook small jobs. The imports stopped after the German invasion of Denmark, forcing L&T to start manufacturing dairy equipment indigenously, a move that was successful.

Seeing opportunity in ship repair during wartime, Larsen and Toubro formed a new company called Hilda Ltd. Around this time, L&T also started two repair and fabrication shops. The internment of German engineers who were supposed to build a soda ash plant for the Tata’s provided L&T another new opportunity. In 1944, Larsen and Toubro established Engineering Construction & Contracts (ECC). L&T started collaborating with international companies around this time. In 1945, it signed an agreement with the Caterpillar Tractor Company of USA for marketing earthmoving equipment. L&T also started representing British manufacturers of equipment used to manufacture a variety of products including biscuits, glass, hydrogenated oils and soaps. At the end of the World War II, the war-surplus Caterpillar equipment was available in bulk at low prices. However, L&T lacked the money to purchase them. Therefore, Larsen and Toubro decided to raise additional equity capital, and as a result, Larsen & Toubro Private Limited was established on 7 February 1946. After India gained independence in 1947, L&T set up offices in Calcutta, Madras and New Delhi. Larsen and Toubro gradually transformed L&T into a large business house with diverse interests, and went on to become one of the most successful Indian companies. After retirement, Holck-Larsen served as the chairman emeritus of the company. He used to call India his "adopted homeland" and divided his time between Denmark and India.[4] Awards and recognitions • Ramon Magsaysay Award for International Understanding (1976) • Knighthood from Queen Margrethe II of Denmark (1977) • Sir Jehangir Ghandy Medal for Industrial Peace (1980) • Chemtech Foundation's Chemical Industry Stalwart Award (2000) • Bombay Management Association's Lifetime Achievement Award (2001) • Citation from the Indo-European Union Business Summit for promoting business beyond boundaries (2002) • Padma Bhushan (2002) for contribution to Indian industry.

THE KIEV TV TOWER Status – Complete Type - Steel lattice television tower Construction started - 1968 Completed – 1973 Opening – 1973 Height – 385m (1263 ft) Antenna spire - 385 m (1,263 ft) Lifts/elevators - 2

The Kiev TV Tower is a 385 m-high (1,263 ft) lattice steel tower built in 1973 in Kiev, Ukraine, for radio and television broadcasting. It is the tallest freestanding lattice steel construction in the world. The tower is not open to the public. Construction began in 1968 and finished in 1973 at a cost of approximately $12 million. Made of steel pipe of various diameters and thicknesses, the structure weighs 2,700 tones. The central pipe, or core, where the elevator is located, is 4 meters in diameter and made of pipe that is 12 mm thick. It sits on a four-legged base that is about 100 meters tall. Atop the base is an enclosed level which houses microwave transmitting and receiving equipment. At about 200 meters is a second enclosed level that houses television and FM transmitters, as well as a control and maintenance shop. This second level is the elevator's terminus. The tower is unique in that no mechanical fasteners are used in the structure: every joint, pipe and fixture is attached by welding. The tower was first designed for Moscow, then the Soviet capital. But Moscow authorities preferred a more "solid" type of tower which was eventually built (Ostankino Tower). Later, when Kiev needed its own tower, the project was reintroduced. The Soviet government ordered the engineers to shorten the tower by almost 30%, so as not to be as tall as the Moscow one.

Autumn Health and Immunity Tips : Autumn is the time of maturity and harvest. The air becomes a bit crisper, and the leaves change. Everything slows down, and the days shorten. The wind can be a bit (or a lot) cooler. Make sure you've got a jacket with you and cover your neck to avoid colds and flu's - the wind has a way of overcoming the immune system. Make sure you're eating well and your digestion is good, because that's the root of your immune system strength. Dryness is a common problem in the autumn. It causes constipation, dry throat, dry skin, dry eyes, dry brittle hair, thirst, and prevents sweating. Spicy food makes it worse. Pear juice is a nice moistening solution for a dry Lung (Chinese medicine includes the nose, skin, and throat in its Lung organ-system). Grief, the emotion of autumn, is quite appropriate in certain situations. In fact, the American Psychiatric Association has determined that 6 weeks of grief is appropriate and normal after the death of a loved one, or a great tragedy. But excessive or long-term grief can harm the Lung-system, and people with Metal-phase or Lung organsystem problems can be frequent criers. But let's not forget a more positive form of grief, nostalgia, which can typify the 'autumn’ of our lives. Everyone has their own way of doing it- looking through old letters, and albums of photographs. It would not be advisable to stay in a nostalgic mood for too long (unless you like depression and fatigue), but a little bit of "retrospection" does the body and soul good. Autumn Tips: * Go to bed at sunset & arise at dawn *Remain calm and peaceful & avoid depression *Rein in your desires & become focused *Breathe deeply & smoothly *Avoid smoking & excessive grief The Consequences of Not Adapting to Autumn: *Immediately: Injury to the Lung and Immune System. *Later: In the winter, metabolic and digestive problems including diarrhea and undigested food .

Ghatasthapana / Navratri is a festival dedicated to the worship of the Hindu deity Durga. The word Navaratri literally means nine nights in Sanskrit, nava meaning nine and ratri meaning nights. During these nine nights and ten days, nine forms of Shakti/Devi are worshiped. The tenth day is commonly referred to as Vijayadashami or "Dussehra." Navratri is a very important and major festival in the western states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka during which the traditional dance of Gujarat called "Garba" is widely performed. This festival is celebrated with great zeal in North India as well, including Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and the northern state of Punjab. Dasara / Vijayadashami also known as Dashahara, Dussehra, Dashain (in Nepal), Navratri or Durgotsav is one of the most important Hindu festivals celebrated in various forms, across India, Nepal and Bangladesh. The name Dussehra is derived from Sanskrit Dasha-hara literally means removal of ten referring to Lord Rama's victory over the ten-headed demon king Ravana. The day also marks the victory of Goddess Durga over the demons Mahishasur. The name Vijayadashami is also derived from the Sanskrit words "Vijaya-dashmi" literally meaning the victory on the dashmi (Dashmi being the tenth lunar day of the Hindu calendar month). Vasubaras Diwali celebrations are spread over five days, from Dhanteras to Bhaiduj. In some places like Maharashtra it starts with Vasu Baras. All the days except Diwali are named according to their designation in the Hindu calendar. The days are: Govatsa Dwadashi or Vasu Baras (27 Ashvin or 12 Krishna Paksha Ashvin): Go means cow and vatsa means calf. Dwadashi or Baras means the 12th day. On this day the cow and calf are worshiped. The story associated with this day is that of King Prithu, son of the tyrant King Vena. Due to the ill rule of Vena, there was a terrible famine and earth stopped being fruitful. Prithu chased the earth, who is usually represented as cow, and ‘milked’ her, meaning that he brought prosperity to the land.
