PERSONALITY OF THE MONTH Dr. Dhondo Keshav Karve

Born

- 18th April, 1858 Murud Dapoli, Ratnagiri Maharashtra

Died

- 9th Nov, 1962, Pune

He is popularly known as Maharishi Karve or "Anna Karve", was a social reformer in Indiain the field of women's welfare. In honor of Karve, Queen's Road in Mumbai (Bombay) was renamed to Maharishi Karve Road. Karve continued the pioneering work of Mahatma Phule and Savitribai Phule in promoting women's education. The Government of India awarded him its highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, in 1958, the year of his 100th birthday. Early life He was born in a lower middle-class Chitpavan Brahmin family. His father's name was Keshav Bapunna Karve. In his autobiography, he wrote of his struggle to appear at a public service examination, walking 110 miles in torrential rain and difficult terrain to the nearest city of Satara, and his shattering disappointment at not being allowed to appear for the examination because "he looked too young". Karve studied at Elphinstone College in Bombay (Mumbai) to receive a bachelor's degree in mathematics. Career as a college professor During 1891–1914, Karve taught mathematics at Fergusson College in Pune, Maharashtra. Inspirations The work of Pandita Ramabai inspired Karve to dedicate his life to the cause of female education, and the work of Vishnushastri Chiplunkar and Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar inspired him to work for uplifting the status of widows. Writings of Herbert Spencer had also highly influenced him. Social work In 1893, Karve founded Widhawa-Wiwahottejak Mandali, which, besides encouraging marriages of widows, also helped the needy children of widows. In 1895, the institution was renamed as Widhawa-Wiwaha-Pratibandh-Niwarak Mandali (Society to Remove Obstacles to Marriages of Widows). In 1896, Karve established a Hindu Widows' Home Association and started in Hingane, a village then in the outskirts of Pune in Maharashtra, Mahilashram, a shelter and a school for women, including widows. He started Mahila Vidyalaya in 1907; the following year, he started Nishkam Karma Math (Social Service Society) to train workers for the Widows Home and the Mahila Vidyalaya.

Later, Widows Home was renamed as Hingane Stree Shikshan Samstha. Still later, as the institution flourished by leaps and bounds, it was renamed as Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha.[5] When Karve had started his shelter and school for women, including widows, in 1896, he had to start it in the remote village of Hingane outside the city of Pune because the dominant orthodox Brahmin community in the city had ostracized him for his reformatory activitities. (Karve himself belonged to the Brahmin community.) With his meager resources, for many years Karve would walk several miles from Hingane to the city of Pune to teach mathematics at Fergusson College and also collect in his spare time paltry donations from a few progressive donors, even as some others from the orthodox community would openly hurl insulting epithets at him when he went around to spread the word of his emancipatory work and collect donations. Karve's 20-year-old widowed sister-in-law, Parvatibai Athavale, was the first to join his school. After finishing her education, she joined him as the first woman superintendent of the then-named Hindu Widows' Home Association. After reading information about Japan Women's University in Tokyo, Japan, Karve felt inspired to establish in 1916 in Pune the first university for women in India, with five students. During 1917–1918, Karve established the Training College for Primary School Teachers, and another school for girls, Kanya Shala. In 1920, an industrialist and philanthropist from Mumbai, Vithaldas Thackersey, donated Karve's university 1.5 million Indian rupees—a substantial sum in those days—and the university was then renamed 'Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey (SNDT) Indian Womens University. In March 1929, Karve left for a tour of England. He attended the Primary Teachers' Conference at Malvern, and spoke on "Education of Women in India" at a meeting of the East India Association at Caxton Hall, London. From 25 July to 4 August 1929, he attended an educational conference in Geneva, and spoke on "The Indian Experiment in Higher Education for Women." From 8 to 21 August, he attended in Elsinor the international meeting of educators under the auspices of the New Education Fellowship. During a subsequent tour of America, Karve lectured at various forums on women's education and social reforms in India. He also visited the Women's University in Tokyo. He returned to India in April 1930. In December 1930, Karve left for a fifteen-month tour of Africa to spread information about his work for women in India. He visited Mombasa, Kenya, Uganda, Tanganyika, Zanzibar,Portuguese East Africa, and South Africa . In 1931, the SNDT University established its first college in Mumbai, and moved its headquarters to Mumbai five years later. In 1936, Karve started the Maharashtra Village Primary Education Society with the goal of opening primary schools in villages which had no schools run by the District Local Boards. He also encouraged maintenance of reading habits of adults in villages. In 1944, he founded the Samata Sangh (Association for the Promotion of Human Equality). In 1949, the Government of India recognized SNDT University as a statutory university. Besides dedicating his life to the emancipation of women in India, Karve stood for the abolition of the caste system and the curse of untouchability in Hindu society. HUMOR CORNER Beautiful story…..A very poor man lived with his wife. One day, his wife, who had very long hair asked him to buy her a comb for her hair to grow well and to be wellgroomed. The man felt very sorry and said no. He explained that he did not even have enough money to fix the strap of his watch he had just broken. She did not insist on her request. The man went to work and passed by a watch shop, sold his damaged watch at a low price and went to buy a comb for his wife. He came home in the evening with the comb in his hand ready to give to his wife. He was surprised when he saw his wife with a very short hair cut. She had sold her hair and was holding a new watch band. Tears flowed simultaneously from their eyes, not for the futility of their actions, but for the reciprocity of their love. MORAL: To love is nothing, to be loved is something but to love and to be loved by the one you love, that is EVERYTHING. Never take love for granted.

FESTIVAL OF THE MONTH

Mahashivratra

Ganesh Jayanti Shri Ganesh Jayanti, the day on which the Ganesh frequencies reached earth for the first time, i.e. the day on which Shri Ganesh was born, is the fourth day (chaturthi) of the bright fortnight of the Hindu lunar month of Maagh. On this auspicious occasion, what can we do to derive maximum spiritual benefit from Shri Ganesh’s heightened presence on earth? This article is based on the divine knowledge received by a seeker (saadhikaa) doing spiritual practice under the guidance of His Holiness Dr. Athavale. It provides an idea of the types of spiritual practices (saadhanaa) that can be performed on this day and their relative importance. Basic spiritual celebration : On the auspicious occasion of Shri Ganesh Jayanti, the devotee or seeker (saadhak) should do 3 to 9 turns of a mala (108 stringed beads) while chanting Sree Ganesh’s Name (‘Om Gan Ganapataye namaha’) In addition to this, a devotee should worship Shri Ganesh's idol or picture, ritualistically. From this one can derive the benefit of Sree Ganesh’s divine energy and divine consciousness that come to earth in higher amounts this day. Reciting Shri Ganesh Atharvashirsha (stotra, holy verses in praise of Shri Ganesh) adds to these benefits. Chatrapati Shri Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti Chatrapati Shri Shivajiraje Bhosle, who is known as the founder and an ideal ruler of Hindavi Empire, is revered as an allinclusive, compassionate King in Maharashtra and all over Bharat. In order to fight against the enemy, using the system of guerrilla war, which was ideal for mountainous regions in Maharashtra, he fought with regimes of Adilshah of Vijapur, Nizam of Ahmednagar and also the most powerful Mughal Empire at that time and sowed the seeds of the Maratha Empire. Although the empires of Adilshah, Nizam and Mughals were powerful, yet they fully relied on local chiefs (sardars) - and killedars (Officers in-charge of Forts). These sardars and killedars were causing a lot of distress & injustice to the people under their authority. Shivaji Maharaj relieved them from this brutality and set an example of very good governance before the future kings. If we try to take a review of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s personality and his regime, we come to know many things. His personality was a combination of highest qualities like bravery, might, physical capability, idealism, organising skill, strict and planned governance, diplomacy, courage, foresightedness and so on. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj • Worked very hard to increase his physical strength during his childhood and youth. • Studied various weapons for might. • United simple and sincere mavlas and kindled in them faith and idealism. • Taking an oath, he involved himself totally in the mission of establishing Hindavi Swarajya. Conquered important forts and built new ones. • He subdued many enemies by using the formula of attacking at the right time and signing a treaty if the need arises very cleverly. He tackled treason, deceit, and enmity within Swarajya very successfully. • Used guerrilla technique very shrewdly while attacking. • Made proper arrangements for ordinary people, farmers, brave soldiers, religious places and for so many other things. • Most important of all is that, he formed a cabinet of 8 ministers (Ashtapradhan Mandal) to look after the total governance of Hindavi Swarajya. • Tried to develop Rajbhasha very seriously; he patronised various arts. • Tried to awaken the spirit of self-respect, might, loyalty to Swarajya in the minds of downtrodden, depressed subject. All these things were achieved by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in just 50 years of his lifetime ! Maha Shivratri : Is a Hindu festival celebrated every year in reverence of Lord Shiva. It is also known as padmarajarathri. Alternate common spellings include Sivaratri, Shivaratri, Sivarathri, and Shivaratri. It is celebrated every year on the 13th night/14th day of the Maagha month of the Hindu calendar. Since many different calendars are followed by various ethno-linguistic groups of India, the month and the Tithi name are not uniform all over India and Nepal. Celebrated in the dark fortnight or Krishna Paksha(waning moon) of the month of Maagha according to the Shalivahana or Gujarati Vikrama or Phalguna according to the Vikrama era. The festival is principally celebrated by offerings of Bael or Bilva/Vilvam leaves to Lord Shiva, all-day fasting and an all-night-long vigil. All through the day the devotees, chant the sacred Panchakshara mantra dedicated to Lord "Om Namah Shivaya". In accordance with scriptural and discipleship traditions, penances are performed in order to gain boons in the practice of Yoga and meditation, in order to reach life's summum bonum steadily and swiftly. A week-long International Mandi Shivratri Fair held at Mandi in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh every year is one of the major tourist attractions in the state. In Nepal, millions of Hindus attend Shivaratri together from different part of the world at the famous Pashupatinath Temple. Thousand of devotees also attend Mahasivaratri at all the different famous Shiva Shakti Peetham of Nepal. On Mahashivratri, Nishita Kala is the ideal time to observe Shiva Pooja. On this day, in all Shiva's temples, the most auspicious Lingodbhava puja is performed.
