DG Message - Dil Se Congratulations the world through the sea, survived the cyclone of 20 hours, showed the courage and valour of the ladies of our country, this story was unbelievable.

Dear friends The month of February came with huge excitement. The Annual Rotary District Conference was being held in Pune in Sunny’s World from 1 st to 3 rd February. SYMPHONY was the theme of the conference, signifying the perfect blend of friendship, fellowship and excitement for people of all age groups, sex, culture, genre and different cultures and values in life.

The conference was attended by 1600 plus members from the Rotary Family. On 1st Feb we had the Patrons Dinner where we had the COG meeting with our RIPR Gowrie Rajan who had come from Sri Lanka.

Subsequently she interacted with the patrons and this was followed by a wonderful R D Burman musical show.

The conference was inaugurated by our RIPR Gowrie and then we had our galaxy of speakers who stole the entire show. Padmashri Bunker Roy spoke about Tolania village, Barefoot College and the Solar Mamas. Then Creative Art Director from Bollywood Nitin Desai was interviewed by Sudhir Gadgil and he actually brought tears in the eyes of people.

Then we had Col. Lalit Rai who kept everybody spellbound for 2 hours about his story of India winning the Kargil war. It speaks volumes about the courage of our soldiers who fight for us on the borders of our nation. We had Gyan Vatsal Swami who connected our theme to Rotary, Comedian Amit Tandon who made laughter so easy with his stories of leading a married life and finally President Ravishankar the 100 crore Man from Banglore stunned everyone with his resolve to serve the society.

It is unbelievable that all the faculties received a standing ovation which is unparalelled in our District ever. My entire Club led by President Santosh Ambavane, Chairman Shrikant Chilekar ensured that the hospitality and fellowship was excellent and I salute all my club members for their immaculate performance.

After the small break post Conference, my OCVs restarted and so did my travelling. The visits to RC Pune Central, RC Pimpri, RC Nigdi, RC Royal, RC Pune Far East were exciting in terms of the work done by these clubs.

Finally the District elected the Governor for the year 2021-22 in PP Pankaj Shah from RC Pune Sarasbagh and I wish him the very best on behalf of all of us.

ROTARY DISTRICT CONFERENCE - SYMPHONY 2019 The creative artist has dreams and gives wings to dreams. Our District 3131 leader Dr. Shailesh Palekar, District Governor planned, scheduled and executed the event with his able and fully motivated conference team under Club Captainship of Conference Chairman Rtn. PP Shrikant Chilekar.

The Rotary Conference Symphony-2019 was held from 1st February 2019 with Patron’s night with formal inauguration on 2nd February 2019 and concluded on 3rd February 2019, at Sunny’s World, Sus Gaon, Pune.

Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) Foreign participants gave dance performance of Ganesh Vandana and song Jai Ho. Multiple styles of dancing by youth were appreciated by all delegates.

The choreography was very good and Rotary youth were totally focused on emotion and gave positive vibrations.

The main objective of Conference was to engage members of all levels from most senior leaders to newest club member. The event was aimed to recognize accomplishments of members, clubs and entire district in order to inspire, motivate all to become more involved to get vision of Rotary beyond club level and provide memorable fellowship experience.

This event was grand display of leaders with spiritual quotient and excellent team work and complete event was accomplished with full and utmost satisfaction of 1550 members who attended this event.

INAUGURAL PROGRAMME : All Club Presidents and district officers welcome by waving club flags and Chief Guest Rotary International President’s Representative, PDG from Srilanka Gowri was escorted in special decorated chariot and was accompanied by DG Dr. Shailesh Palekar, and first lady of the District Dr. Shobhana Everyone including Chief Guest enjoyed and appreciated in unison playing of Dhol/ Tasha Pathak.

CULTURAL PROGRAMME / DANCES / SKITS : The Rotary Conference theme Symphony was displayed by Kathak dance performed by Rotary Ann Isha Phadke and group.

The performance of Rotary Interactors of Rotary Club of Panvel Industrial town gave excellent performance of Cosmic dance of Lord Shiva “ Bharat Natyam”. Participants appreciated this performance from bottom of heart.

Performance by students from Ashram School was excellent display of rejuvenation of body and mind. The excellent energy level yoga performed by boys and girls (from audience someone said Rubber Boys and Rubber Girls).

ROTARY BUSINESS : The entire event was planned and scheduled in such a way that various interests of Rotarians were recognized considering totally double complementary programmes of guest speakers in a way 70% of contents were related to Rotary. RI theme was presented by PDG Gowri and numbers of addresses were delivered by District Governor.

The philosophical cornerstones, the object of Rotary and various avenues of service were discussed with special emphasis on Rotary foundation and motivational interview of theRotarian who donated RS.100 crores to Rotary Foundation. Elements of an effective club were discussed with due recognitions and felicitations.

Discussions on club projects and RI programs were given due weightage.

CONFERENCE PROMOTION JAI HO : District Governor Elect Ravee Dhotre and team gave Conference promotional performance of District conference -2020 JAI HO. The registration for Conference 2020 was opened with attractive pricing.

GUEST SPEAKERS : SHRI BUNKER ROY : Indian Social Activist and educator who founded the Barefoot College. Recipient of Padmashri Award. One man Army Shri Bunker Roy gave presentation on his Barefoot College, informed

about his social work and Research centre established in 1972. Solar Power, Focus on water and irrigation to empowerment and sustainability Mr. Bunker Roy emphasized that India and Africa are full of people with skills, knowledge and resourcefulness who are not recognized as engineers, architects or water experts but can bring more to communities than Government and or corporate business houses. The Rotarians were more than happy to see devoted, non assuming, simple personality Bunker Roy and living example of Service Above Self.

Nitin Chandrakant Desai : His work is in general described in the best way as straight from the Art. Desai a great personality behind the appeal and look of films as diverse as Pyar to Hona Hi Tha, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Josh, Mission Kashmir, Lagan.The legend of Bhagat Singh and Devdas.

Mr. Sudhir Gadgil an expert interviewer asked many questions from how do you approach assignments Nitin Desai. divulged many things with his 40 years of experience and expertise behind him.

His close encounter with our Prime Minister during couple of times and his appreciation stories were greeted with continuous applause. The dream merchant Nitin Chandrakant Desai rose from humble beginnings as assistant Art Director and rose up the ranks to become a production designer of note, wooed by both Hollywood and Indian Film Industry.

Life story of humble Nitin is like Arabian Night stories of poor Alibaba who gets magic lamp and becomes king.

Lt. Commander Aishwarya : She gave brief overview of Navika Sagar Parikrama. It is the name of expedition for circumnavigating the globe on INSV Tarini by Indian Navy’s Women Naval Officers. The six-member all-woman team, led by Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi and composed of Lt Commander Vartika Joshi, Lt Commander Pratibha Jamwal, Lt Commander Swati P, Lieutenant Aishwarya Boddapati, Lieutenant S Vijaya Devi and Lieutenant Payal Gupta, circumnavigated and managed the whole operation in this first ever global journey. The voyage which lasted for 254 days, covered 21600 miles, had 5 port calls in Fremantle Australia-Lyttelton-New Zealand Port Stanley-Falklands, Cape TownSouth Africa and finally at Mauritius

before returning home to Goa. All six members of the crew were trained for over three years under Captain Dilip Donde, who is also the first Indian to successfully carry out solo-circumnavigation of the globe between 2009 and 2010.

Retired Colonel Lalit Rai : Ex commanding officer of 1/11 Gorkha Rifles, recipient of the Vir Chakra third highest award for gallantry was narrating the gallantry act of his company during Kargil War. The conference hall was filled with emotion as colonel, a Vir Chakra awardee recounted the epic battle of Kargil and his company’s will to fight and an indomitable spirit in capturing the Khalubar Hills on the night of July 2-3, 1999. Even in their death there was glory, because their rifles were pointing towards enemy bunkers.

Colonel although wounded in shoulder and leg pressed his solitary charge with grim determination displaying great courage service above self attitude, till he captured from bunker to bunker unmindful of his grievous wounds, he rushed from bunker to bunker. The Kargil story of victory

SWAMI GYAN VATSAL : Swami gave motivational speech on conference theme Symphony. He is from Akshardham BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir. Swamiji is a Mechanical Engineer from BVM Vidhyanagar, SP Univeristy. Swamiji gave many Rotary examples and indicated that like Symphony, harmony has to be maintained in Rotary Management each event and club and project, leaving aside ego. You are not judged by your performance but by how you handle success and failure.

Emphasizing on Symphony (Harmony) in Rotary, Swamiji explained selfless services of Pramukhswami Maharaj having built 1300 Swaminarayan temples, Hospitals, Educational Institutes, 1300 Baps tribal centers.

The examples of Rotary were cited maintaining harmonized Symphony in Rotary is critical skill in today’s

interconnected Rotary world.

Each member involved in Rotary has different ways of doing things which can create teamwork issues.

Only Rotary as team can make huge difference in society. Swamiji discussed on IQ, EQ and thereafter spiritual quotient which makes great leaders. Lecture by Swamji was totally thought provoking and excellent.

FOOD/FELLOWSHIP/AMBIENCE : All delegates appreciated excellent breath taking venue and appreciated buffet style breakfast, lunches and dinner on 1st Feb. 2019 during fellowship programme along with extra ordinary band Moksha. The menu was designed to take care of Jain food, vegetarians and non-vegetarians with multiple counters for various items, dessert and salad bar ensured comforts of all delegates. Overwhelmed with the presence of Kargil hero, the participants ensured that the night was full with joy and merriment.

The night was memorable and left everyone extremely satisfied.

Tech Fest 2019 A Talent Search by RC Talegaon Dabhade Tech Fest 2019 was a state level inter college competition organized at Nutan Polytechnic and Engineering College jointly with Rotary Club of Pune West and Rotary Club of Talegaon Dabhade. The main moto of this project is search talent amongst all fields of engineering. We evaluated students and their projects from the fields of IT, Civil, Automobile, ENTC, Electrical and Mechanical. We received a total of 99 entries from various engineering colleges. All participants received certificates for participation and attractive prizes were given to the best project.

RYLA by RC Pune Shaniwarwada One day RYLA of 44 students from different schools in R.C.C. area was arranged in Ambadwet village.

Various activities such as aeroplane making, control on emotions, anger, drama competition, indoor games were arranged in the RYLA. Total expenses : Rs.35000.

RYLA at Sadabahar Moments Mulshi Pune by RC Pune Lokmanyanagar We conducted a RYLA at Sadabahar Moments, Mulshi for the local children of the village. There were 100+ students that attended the day long event. The emphasis was on how to prepare for board exams. Each subject was dealt with in great detail along with question and answer sessions.

The RYLA was unique as it was conducted by youth/adults from the same village who are now established in their fields. It was their way of giving back to society what they gained from it. This itself acted like an inspiration to the children.

Advanced Maths Teachers Training Program by RC Talegaon Dabhade One Day Advanced Maths Teachers Training Program at Kantilal Vidyalalya. The prime moto for this project is to train teachers to teach maths in a fun and loving way where students get more inclined towards excelling in the subject. 26 Teachers participated from various schools of Maval Taluka. This was a joint project between Rotary Club of Pune Pride and Rotary Club of Talegaon Dabhade.

Fashion show for development of new generation and Public Image enhancement by RC Patalganga RC Patalganga in association with an NGO organized Fashion Show ( Mr. Handsome and Ms. Beautiful) for youngsters of Raigad area. A platform was provided for development of youngsters who had the qualities of models but were deprived due to status and lack of opportunity in remote areas where they belong. This event also helped in enhancing the Rotary image.

RYLA Young Social Innovator Awards by RC Panvel Midtown Rotary Club of Panvel Midtown took up a novel initiative to conduct RYLA. The club created a platform in Panvel to motivate, encourage and reward ideas and innovations generating out of young minds for addressing societal problems in the areas of health, primary and rural education, sports, traffic, sound and air pollution, sanitation and hygiene, economic development of rural communities, water conservation and alternate energy sources. Collectively such ideas fall under the category of ‘Social Innovations’ and hence the name of the initiative came to be as Rotary Club of Panvel Midtown’s Young Social Innovator Awards. This event was conducted in association with Panvel Municipal Corporation and Rotaract Club of Panvel Midtown.

The program was conducted in two parts. In the first part, the core team reached out to over 36 colleges and institutes. The team explained the concept to the teaching fraternity and advised them to guide the

students for this initiative. Through this exercise alone, the club could reach out to thousands of students, teachers, principals and staff members garnering a very positive public image of Rotary. This, in fact, came out as an incidental benefit of the entire initiative.

Almost 100 students registered via the online link and 25 submitted their White Papers detailing their innovative idea. Of these 25 white papers, 7 were shortlisted by the Club’s internal panel. Presentations of these 7 shortlisted whitepapers were held on 17th February morning session at Pillai College, Panvel. An expert panel comprising of 5 panelists of diverse streams, was instituted to pick up the top 3 presentations. This was followed by the Award Ceremony during the RYLA held in the evening session, at Adya Krantiveer Vasudev Balwant Phadke Natyagruha. Mayor of Panvel Municipal Corporation Dr. Kavita Chautmal was present on the occasion. For the benefit of students and Young Entrepreneurs, 2 keynote speeches were organized at the event. Parivar, motivated the students on how to pick the right career path and Dr. Kaustubh Dhargalkar, Design Thinking Coach, Innovation Consultant, Startup Evangelist and TEDx Speaker shared his insights on finding opportunities for innovations through observations, and mantras on converting an idea into a successful venture. To motivate and inspire the students, the top 3 student groups were awarded with Trophies, certificates and a cash prize as well. This ceremony was attended by over 500 students, parents and teachers. President Rtn Sanjivani Malvankar congratulated the Youth Director Rtn CA Shrikant Limaye, Secretary Rtn Prasad Deshmukh, Project Chairperson Rtn Yogeeta Deshmukh and the entire team for the successful implementation of this massive initiative. Rotary Club of Panvel Midtown remains committed to the empowerment of Youth. The Club, under RYLA, will be conducting many such innovative campaigns for students and youngsters in the years to come.

Rotary Designated Month - Water & Sanitation District 3131 wings Wash in School Competitive Bid Our Dist. 3131 has won Wash in School Competitive Bid The victory shows how The Rotary Foundation helps in Humanitarian Projects and why we should contribute to Foundation.

In July 2017, The Rotary Foundation floated a competitive bid for Area of Focus – Wash In Schools WinS under Water and Sanitation focus area. It was for upgrading Water, Sanitation and hygiene facilities in schools, typically from UNICEF Ranking Level Star ZERO or Star ONE to Star TWO. 46 Districts worldwide submitted their bids, which was a 2-phase bid evaluation process. As water is very basic need & still about 60% population is not getting safe drinking water Syngenta (I) Rotary 3131 took two initiatives to fulfill the water requirement at 14 villages since last year, under mission of Kund project 8 villages & under water ATM 6 villages Kund project - In marathi Kund means Tank.

In hilly area specially in Sahyadri mountain range though yearly rainfall is about 2500 mm due to topography there is scarcity of water from Feb to June midweek. To have drinking water its half day task for woman & girls. This have following impact on social-economic life of villagers.

- They use whatever water available nearer to residence, which creates health problems. Also, hardship creates health problems.

- In hilly area a small stream either higher side of hill or at valley & it is away from residence. These women & girls have to carry water containers of 20 lit. It consumes time minimum two to four hours.

- The above hours can be productive, in farms, animal husbandry etc.

- Due to this girls drop out from school.

- Due to such hardship in life, marriages of boys stuck up

proposals submitted, 11 districts were short listed and were told to do detailed Need Assessment of schools in the target community.

RID 3131 was one of those 11 district all over the world and one of the four from India. Then, we submitted our Need Assessment along with Phase 2 Bid. It included - elaborate need assessment report compiled based on data of 200+ schools, Financial Plan and Projected Fund Flow, Elaborate Training, Cultural/ Behaviour change plan, detailed Syllabus and Schedule of Multi-phase Teacher Training programs, Refresher and follow up training, Awareness and promotion Campaign Plan to drive change habits/behaviour, Ideas for revenue generation for schools to create funding for operation and maintenance of asset and consumables after the project is over

Globally Four districts won the bid.

It included only two districts from India - RID 3131 and one district from Kerala. RID 3131 Bid’s total amount is $315,000. We paid our 15 contribution via a generous Term Gift (by DGN Rashmi Kulkarni) and balance via DDF. Now 50+ clubs are participating in this project which is in execution stage.

- Over all life become pitiable.

Some Facts - 8 village save. 100 women/village …..total 800 women - Average - walk for water collection 1.5 km one side & hence both side 3km/day - 800 woman 3km/ day X 100days/ year = 2,40,000km/year - Rs 100 day wages, 100 working days wastage X 800 woman Total loss in amount Rs. 80,00,000/per year in eight villages All these recovered by total investment of Rs. 15,00,000, one time in eight villages No of Beneficiary - @ 4800 Investment per Beneficiary Rs. 312 @ Rs. 325

Simple Solution : Providing two tanks of appropriate capacities. One being installed / constructed at source of water & another at approachable place from residence of villagers & these tanks are to connected by pipe line .

The major contribution of money Syngenta (I) CSR is doing. Balance is by Rotary. Where ever is labor required, villagers do it voluntarily.

International Car Rally - Spreading Awareness of Contribution by Rotary - Part II Friends, let me take you to Bareilly where we left the rally in the last issue.The rally left Bareilly to Banabasa in Uttarakhand for entering into Nepal from its west as per the plan. Our leader PDG Subodh Joshi had finalised six meetings for six nights stay at Nepal in co-ordination with the district leaders of RID 3292 – which comprises of Nepal and Bhutan.

We travelled alongside of Sarada / Mahakali / Kali river and entered into Gaddachowky of Nepal. All of us were quite anxious about the immigration formalities and also passing of the Indian cars in the foreign territories.

Many Rotarians and journalists were present at a big ground to welcome us. Due to the Nepalese Rotarians, the formalities of immigration and RTO passing of Indian cars were done very smoothly beyond our expectations.

After a very warm welcome program and news bytes by journalist we were taken to Shuklaphanta Forest Reserve for lunch and forest tour. We reached the Rotary meeting place Dhangadilate evening. Not only Rotarians but also Nepal’s tourism minister ‘Maya Bhatt’ was waiting for us. As usual there was exchange of thoughts about rally purpose and what Rotary is doing at Dhangadi. A grand fellowship dinner alongside of camp fire was arranged for us which took away all the stress and tiredness during the journey to Nepal and forest reserve.

Next day our route to Butwal was passing through a forest reserve. The driving in that area was worthy to note as the speed limit was supposed to be 40 and no stopping and no overtaking.

It was a great challenge for drivers as the road was very nice. All these rules were ensured by giving the entry time and expected leaving time slip at the entry post of forest area.

Well, apart from driving experiences we also noted the devnagari script on boards, road signs etc. used

by Nepalese which was more common than in Pune.

It was also easy for CAR RALLY us to interact with Nepalese RID 3131 as they can speak English as well as Hindi very fluently.

Meeting at Butwal was an illustration of ‘Be the Inspiration’. This is a ‘Major Donor Club’. The club’s projects of Heart Hospital, Ambulance, Dialysis centre, CT Scan centre speak about the same.

We were greeted by Rotary Club of Damauli and Rotary Club of Tansen on the way to Pokhara. Many cars with local Rotarians led our way for 3 kms to our meeting place at Pokhara. There was a lot of individual interaction during this meeting.

Next day few of us went to Sarangkot point for viewing the golden crown on Annapoorna peak during sunrise.

It was really worth to get up early morning for that stunning view.

Then the car rally moved further towards Kathmandu. PDG in Nepal

had arranged our queue-free visit Manakamana Devi temple on mountain. The cable car rode over 2.8 kms within 10 minutes. It was a nice ride with beautiful valley view and cold weather on the mountain top.

In the evening we reached Kathmandu where fellowship dinner was arranged for us by the senior Rotarians of RID 3292.

Next day we had planned for aeroplane ride for Everest view.

This was one of the memorable experiences we had during the rally.

We could view the Everest from cock-pit of our chartered flight.

We did ‘Pashupatinath Darshan’ at Kathmandu’ and then we left for Dhulikhel.

We all will remember Dhulikhel for its natural beauty, warm hospitality and moreover for the speech made by rally participant Ketaki Sindekar in Nepalese. It was appreciated by one and all.

The next day we moved to Itahari which was our last halt in Nepal. A large number of rotarians along with interactors greeted us 1 km prior to our meeting place. 15 of us ( 7 had to drive the cars ) joined them for a rally walk to meeting place with banners in hand. It was a different experience for us. Apart from speech about rally objectives, work done by Rotary club of Itahari and flag exchange, this meeting will be remembered by the local folk dance presented by the interactors.

President Elects Training (2019-20) PETs of 2019-20 was held on 16th& 17th February, 2019 at Hotel Novotel Imagica, Khopoli. The event was carried out very smoothly and in a grand manner, with overwhelming response from District Secretaries, District Directors, AGs and 112 PEs along with their spouses. Definitely it took lot of efforts and energy to invite 8 PDGs from other Districts and also to have total 18 Governors as mentors for a single event of just two days.

Presence of RIPE Mark Maloney was a cherry on the cake. Kudos to our District Trainer PDG Mahesh and DGE Ravee.

PRID PT Prabhakar started off very well with his excellent speech on effective leadership. All speakers gave

their best and tried to deliver the positive message from their respective topics. Received very good feedback for most of the speakers & faculties.

Skit ‘NARISHAKTI’ played by all lady President Elects was an awesome and unique way to show the power of women in today’s world. It was superb to watch RIDE Bharat Pandya, speaking on “Exceed Expectations”.

And Friends, what a fantastic treat it was at the end to listen to RIPE Mark Maloney in the closing ceremony,

which took the entire event at greater heights. A special mention and thanks to Host Club RCP South for excellent and successful management of the Event.

AGAC (2019-20) AGAC of 2019-20 was held on 9th and 10th February, 2019 at Mulshi - Pune, at Crompton Greave Training Center.

The event was carried out very smoothly and in a grand manner, with over whelming response from District officers and AGs. The Entire Traning Session was perfectly organised. The attractive session was the open talk show with all the PDGs. District’s kudos to our District Trainer PDG Mahesh and DGE Ravee..

Rotaract News Organ Donation Awareness Session was organised by Interact Club of AKVB Phadke School, Panvel, sponsored by RC Panvel, on 23rd Feb, Saturday as a part of their Community Service Project.

Excellent speech was given by Rtn. Dr. Datta Bhusare to motivate the audience to come forward to pledge for organ donation.

Interactors gave a beautiful presentation on activities planned by their club. A drawing competition was conducted for students on Organ Donation About 250+ Parents, Teachers, Non-teaching staff and Students attended the session to understand more about the subject and remove any misconceptions.

Dear friends, The fond memories of Rotary District Conference Symphony are still fresh in our hearts and minds. What a spectacular show it was which provided us ample opportunities to gain knowledge and experience and interact with our fellow Rotarians.

The speakers surely affected every Rotarian present there with their unqualified fervour in serving the humanity, continuing the infallible call to service. For new Rotarians it

is fragrance of coming together for humanitarian activities. Renowned spiritual leader SWAMI GYANVATSAL took the podium and enlightened the audience on the theme SYMPHONY. We are now again geared up to serve better in the remaining 4 months of the Rotary Year 2018-19. Serving humanity is the most worthwhile thing a person can do. Make a difference in the lives of as many people as we can.

Putting our heart and soul in whatever we do will turn our vision into reality of making the world a better place to live in.

The 8th of MARCH celebrated as WORLD WOMEN’S DAY is approaching. Let us begin celebrations from our home and extend it to the

community at large. There is a familiar saying Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. I am sure you must have planned good vocational training for the ladies to enable them to stand on their feet during this woman’s day celebration.
