Governor’s Monthly Letter

October 2018

DG Dr. Shailesh Palekar RID 3131

DG Message - Dil Se indeed a great sight to see Muskan on the faces of about 400 Interactors who enjoyed their participation in this event.

My Dear Rotary Family, By the time this GML reaches you Navaratri will have started, so wishing you all a very happy Navaratri and may Goddess Durga shower you all with her blessings. I am also sure that lot of clubs will be venturing into Dandiya fellowships, hence we are in the best phase of relaxation and enjoyment. Also all clubs celebrated Ganeshotsav in style. I realized the privileges of being the Governor when I and Shobhana could offer Aarti to Dagadusheth Ganapati in Pune organized by RC of Pune Sinhagad Road and Pune Kothrud. To be a part of the visarjan proceedings on the last day organized by RC Sinhagad Road again with the RYE students was an experience in itself. We could also participate in the visarjan proceedings organized by RC Pune Heritage and these memories will always remain etched in our lives forever. September was the Youth Month and we had the Interact Assembly ‘Muskan‘ organized by RC Kharghar Midtown. It was a fabulously organized event and I must appreciate the special efforts taken by the Host Club led by President Dr Sagar Gundewar. I must also appreciate the efforts of the Youth Director Niraj Mehta and Interact Chair Nalini Ramaswamy to make this event memorable. It was

From 26th to 30th Sept a group of 72 ladies from our District had embarked on ambitious journey for 5 days, 2000 kms , 10 Districts and 4 states via a car Rally. Lady Rotarians, Anns, Annets and few guests participated in this rally from Pune to Bhusawal to Ratlam to Udaipur to Baroda to Panvel. Surely it has been an amazing experience and the reception they received across the districts was incredible and a boost to the PI of RID 3131 was tremendous. Meeting PRIP Kalyan Bannerjee and Binotaji at Vapi was surely an enriching experience. The team led by First Lady Dr Shobhana Palekar and supported by PDG Subodh Joshi indeed has made all of us proud. They promoted Women Empowerment,

Save the Girl Child, promoted the need for Cervical Cancer Vaccination and also Organ Donation. I have also been visiting various clubs for the Official Club Visits and it has been a wonderful experience as well. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of Clubs and motivating them to excel has been the motto for the year and I must appreciate the love and blessing of all our members in all the clubs. We have back to back festivals lined up now Ganapati Festival followed by Navaratri and then Diwali. I know everyone has been working hard for all their projects and for betterment of society. But it is also time that we take appropriate breaks and enjoy such festivities as well. So, do so and have a great festive season. DG Dr Shailesh Palekar

We have constructed a Permanent Pond in the historic Vadale Talav, which is to be used exclusively for immersion of Ganesh Idols, thereby saving not only the vast expanse of 32 acres of the lake but also the other lakes in and around Panvel. A specially designed wall prevents the toxic waste and pollutants from contaminating the entire lake. We were fortunate to get the wholehearted support of Ram Sheth Thakur Samajik Vikas Mandal and J M Mhatre Charitable Trust for faster and cost optimum project.

Thanks to the initiative taken by the Panvel City Municipal Corporation and Panvel City Police Station. Two Drops of Polio Patience - by a Rotaractor from Uganda As a Rotaractor, I ventured deep into my native Uganda with a polio vaccination team as maker of Rotary’s newest virtual reality film ‘Two Drops of Patience’. This story with passionate health workers working at remote places is full of challenges but also satisfying in the end. I loved the experience. Challenges g 200 miles from my home in Kampala, just getting to the homes of children was a challenge g We would sometimes walk for 30 minutes before we would see a home, it was lonely and scary g The poverty was overwhelming. The doors are so small that you can’t

The vaccination team walked on foot to find scattered pockets of people

pulse

actually walk through them – you crawl g The health center is up in the hills. There’s no electricity, but luckily someone donated solar panels to run the refrigerator, since the polio vaccine has to be kept cool g Imagine a place where you rarely see visitors, and then you see that camera drone up in the sky. People would wonder what was going on g People are suspicious of everyone. They dress differently and do their hair differently g Beliefs are unbelievable - you are not supposed to climb the trees or sit on the rocks. They’re sacred. You need to know the community well g We always moved with the nurse, because people knew her and she knew the language g I met a man who had been crippled by polio. I realized that wheelchairs won’t get you up the mountain. You need your legs. When I did my first vaccination, I felt like a hero. It was a satisfying feeling,

knowing you probably just changed someone’s life. I felt I had done something very meaningful. Those two drops of PolioVaccination felt like a life-changing action. It was a great learning and satisfying experience I will cherish. As written for www.rotary.org by Rotaractor Patience Asiimwe, Uganda.

Designated Month Economic and Community Development October is designated as “Economic and Community Development” month by RI. Even if we achieve 100% literacy in the world, it does not automatically guarantee economic contentment of the people. About 192 million people are unemployed out of the world population of 7.6 billion. In India about 7% people are unemployed. Agriculture is the main source of income and employment for 70% of the world’s poor who live in rural areas. According to World Bank, about 1 million people lived on less than $1.25 per day. This is certainly not a rosy picture. We need to act. Unemployment, lack of opportunities, lack of appropriate training and the

absence of social safety nets lie at the core of poverty which leads to unrest among the people. For the poor, labor is often the only asset available to improve one’s well-being. Creating productive employment opportunities is essential for reducing poverty and achieving sustainable economic and social development. This will also help in providing income security and empowerment. Rotary clubs should work with communities. We need to partner with a local organization & assess the strengths and weaknesses of the community. Identify the assets and challenges and the needs. Talk with government and official administrations to explore partnership opportunities. Identify existing rganizations who may be viable partners (corporations, NGO etc.). Focus on skill building with community

All womens Car Rally RID 3131 Come July 2018 and the air started reverberating with the different projects for 2018-19 ….. A one of its kind innovative and dream project envisaged by First Lady Dr. Shobhana Palekar, Convenor AG Sneha Joshi and PDG Subodh Joshi …… ALL WOMENS CAR RALLY …..spanning 4 states…..2000km…….5 days……the first of its kind in District 3131 …26th Sept to 30th Sept 2018. The excitement was mounting …ladies started coming together....... cut off date declared ..10th Aug 2018 ….the final count was a huge …72 participants. Ladies joined for different aspirations and objectives …but soon the dreams of the participants became a logistical challenge.…hence a SUPPORT team of 8 Male Rotarians roped in for planning and detailing. The Rally was flagged off from Aga Khan Palace at 6.45 a.m.on 26th Sept. The air was filled with enthusiasm, positivity, the cars and the ladies looking vibrant and beautiful with their stickers, flags, the red dress code and the jackets. The journey started and what a fabulous journey it was…driving for long hours..the masti...the continuous jokes, laughter, madness… the freedom…the snacks..the navigation…getting lost…finding the way and discovering ourselves in the process… so many life experiences. What added to the experience was the welcome at every stop by Rotarians …the grand welcome with open hearts and open minds. Special banners, fabulous spread of food with local specialities ….fresh upma and south indian food , khaman & undhiyo , gulabjamuns, halwas, jeerapani, fresh butter milk, hot rotis, kesarbatti, dalbati, churma …the list is endless. There was no holding back for our welcome by Rotary family. Small gestures touched our hearts – Rotarians/Rotaractors standing at corners to guide us, with escort vehicles, believing that we are from one family – the Rotary family. Udaipur Rotarians were standing in the blazing sun on the roads to shower us with perfumed rose petals through the city. Our heart swelled with the feeling of oneness...they were so proud of us and the message we were spreading . We as a District 3131 must emulate this warmth, open heartedness and the personal touch whenever we have visiting Rotarians. Not only did we enjoy the hospitality, but we had several cultural exchanges, dances of Maharashtra performed by rallyists and corresponding programs done by them. RC Meena Udaipur and so many other clubs went all out with their resources for us…whether it was arranging music, shopping at venue itself…or presentations, or even decorating the cars, getting people like mayors and collectors and IAS officers to flag off rallies and welcome us brought home the message of the causes the rally was supporting – women empowerment, betibachao, betipadho, organ donation & cervical cancer. DG Gustad Anklesaria and PRIP Kalyan Banerjee and Binotaji opened their houses for the rallyists. We got an opportunity to see all the memorabilia of the Rotary journey of PRIP Kalyan Banerjee. What an experience !! We witnessed humungous work done by Rotary– The Rotary Seva Path – the only road in the country named after Rotary , the sewing machine project for women in Ahmedabad, the Karmania – only women conference coming up in Nasik in November, the interdistrict MUN in Amravati , the work of the ROEFL Trust, the Red Revolution project – LET US BE FRIENDLY project and many more ….we came to know different project ideas, exchanges, rich interactions

pulse

and bonding . The most prevailing feeling however was that ---- yes even with all our differences of opinions, viewpoints and approaches, Rotary does make a difference in various corners of our world. The sheer impact which Rotary has…. made us proud. Anns , new members , Rotarians should be encouraged to be a part of such events … these events are an eye opener and helps onetranscend above petty issues and contribute stronger membership retention and growth. It reinforced that we contribute to the society, making a difference. However all this would not have been possible without the SUPPORT TEAM .Kudos to their dedication, perseverance and support. They really took care of us. Thank you so much PDG Subodh and the team. Last but not the least was the grand welcome and the felicitation organised by RC Panvel. DG Shailesh , PDG Dr Deepak and PDG Dr Gune were there with President Santosh, IPP Suryakant and their club members . What a homecoming …with the winning energy of the beats of the dhol-tasha reverberating in the atmosphere, the shower of petals, the haldikumkum, the gifts, the garlands and the crowns …wow ….simply superb …a welcome appropriate for Queens …we were honoured by our District 3131 and its stalwarts. The Rally has created a bond not just within the participants but across districts and states and most importantly entrenched Rotary in our hearts forever. Thanks to DG Shailesh and first lady Shobhana for giving a one of its kind of enriching life experience. Now it holds true for all the participants – ONCE A ROTARIAN , ALWAYS A ROTARIAN. Thank you ROTARY for a once in a life time experience- THE FIRST ALL WOMEN CAR RALLY IN INDIA – organised by DIST 3131 By IPP Pallavi Deshpande RC Pune University

Dear Friends, It gives me immense pleasure to connect with you all today through this wonderful GML “PULSE “. I am happy to note that many women members have become Rotarians in many clubs of our district in past 3 months . My sincere appreciation to all the presidents and members who have gone an extra mile to induct more women into Rotary. If we look at per capita income of women in India it is lowest and scores

of women are below the poverty line and Rotary is working very hard to change this. Women empowerment is vital for the development of any country. One of our mottos of the LADIES CAR RALLY was women empowerment and I was enthralled to see fantastic projects being done in many parts of the country. I wish to thank all presidents who were part of this rally either in person or had motivated members to become participants of RALLY. IPP Pallavi Deshpande has detailed you about the Rally so wouldn’t write on it but - YES !! The LADIES CAR RALLY by our district has created a BENCHMARK for everyone in our country and has inspired more women to come forward and work for our social cause.

We have another event coming up - RUN / WALK ATHON for WOMEN EMPOWERMENT- On 28th October morning. For every 10 participants of this event 1 woman will be empowered free of cost. She will be given lessons in driving and also an assured job for 3 months. So friends join in this another benchmark event of our district and create history. Friends, we have many more wonderful exciting events coming up for women in rotary and for the Ann’s too. So stay tuned and participate in the same enthusiasm, energy and happiness as you all have been doing so in the past 3 months. Love you all By Rtn Dr Shobhana Palekar

3rd Generation Leader in Rotary July 22, 2018 was a memorable day as my son got installed as President of Rotaract Club of Pimpri. He became a third generation leader in Rotary. Journey in Rotary started with my father, Rtn B. D. Sharma, becoming the charter member of Rotary Club of Pimpri in 1977 and Club President in 1985. As an Annet, I loved attending the Rotary functions. As a second generation leader, I became the Rotaract Club President in 1994. Being fascinated by the world of Rotary, I went on to become the charter member of Rotary Club of Akurdi-Pune in 2006, and the Club President in 2007. My

elder brother too, was President of Rotary Club of Chinchwad in 2001. Little did I realize then that our next generation was also getting ready to step into the Rotary world… Rotary Club of Pimpri requested my

assistance in reviving Rotaract Club of Pimpri. My son became a member of Rotaract Club of Pimpri. He moved forward to take on the leadership of this Club and got installed as President of Rotaract Club of Pimpri – the third generation leader in Rotary! The most memorable part is that I was invited as Guest of Honour for the Ceremony. Our family is referred as The Rotary family…and this is true. Not just because we have three generations into Rotary service, but that each generation takes forward the spirit of Rotary and spreads it further. It is quite possible - your next generation is ready to become a Rotary Leader. Try it !!! By Rtn Jeetendra Sharma. RC Akurdi Pune.
