Forty years ago, a man named George Campbell, the owner of the company I worked for, invited me to join Rotary. Back then, that was a common practice in the United States. Your boss invited you to join Rotary because he thought it would be good for business and good for the community, and you said yes. It’s not surprising that our membership surged during that period. George warned me not to use Rotary as an excuse to slack off at work. Even so, I always had time to attend lunch meetings and serve on committees. I never had to worry that taking a long lunch once a week would hurt my advancement, or what my boss would think about the occasional Rotary phone call at work. Today, things are different. Companies are less generous about time, and not every manager looks favorably on community service. It’s hard to

MAKE FOUNDATION STRONGER ADD MEMBERS ! More members mean a stronger Foundation : Our Rotary Foundation depends on a strong and thriving Rotary membership. It is, after all, our members who provide the generous support that enables our Foundation to tackle some of the world’s most pressing problems. As important as that support is, it’s not the only contribution Rotarians make to our Foundation. The Rotary Foundation has an unusual business model. Like many charities, we receive donations that we use to address a host of critical issues. Unlike most other nonprofit organizations, we depend on our members to develop relevant and effective service projects. Your volunteer labor stretches our contribution dollars and helps The Rotary Foundation to do much more with less.

enjoy a Rotary meeting when you’ve got emails piling up on your phone. It’s harder than ever to balance work with Rotary – and the model that gave us so much growth a few decades ago is part of what’s holding back our growth now. That’s why the recent Council on Legislation adopted some innovative measures that allow clubs to vary their meeting times and expand their pool of prospective members. Clubs have more flexibility now to respond to the needs of their members and to clear away as many barriers to membership as they can. But there’s one barrier to membership that only you can remove, one thing that every prospective member needs to become a Rotarian: an invitation to join a Rotary club. Whenever I tell a group of Rotarians that we need more willing hands, more caring hearts, and more bright minds to move our work forward, everyone The typical global grant requires hours of planning and budgeting before even one dollar is received or spent. Then the sponsors must purchase supplies, seek donated goods, set up bank accounts, o rg a n i z e v o l u n t e e r s , w r i t e reports, and monitor the project’s progress, all while working with Rotarians in another part of the world. Fortunately, our clubs have a wide variety of professional skills and talents to call upon throughout this process. Smaller clubs may not have the financial or human resources to sponsor a global grant, even if their members share a strong commitment to the Foundation’s mission. Imagine what those clubs could accomplish with two or three times as many members. As we celebrate Membership and New Club Development Month in August, let’s not forget the importance of quickly engaging new members in Rotary service. Make sure they know about the many opportunities our

applauds. But those hands, hearts, and minds won’t magically appear in our clubs. We have to ask them to join. And an invitation to Rotary is something that only you can give. An invitation is a gift. It’s saying to someone, “I think you have the skills, the talent, and the character to make our community better, and I want you to join me in doing that.” I’m the president of Rotary International, but the only club I can invite someone to join is the Rotary Club of Chattanooga, Tenn. I can’t make your club or your community stronger. Only you can do that – by inviting the qualified people you know to join you in Rotary Serving Humanity. John F. Germ RI President, 2016-17 Source: Rotary International Courtesy: www.eflashonline.org Foundation offers members to pursue their service interests, from promoting better health to providing training and education to bringing peace and stability to communities in need. Through The Rotary Foundation, our members have a chance to use their skills to make a real difference. First, we need to bring those talented people into our ranks and engage them in our Foundation’s vital work to create a better world. And only we, the Rotarians, can bring in those new members. So it is up to us, really, isn’t it? Kalyan Banerjee Trustee Chair, 2016 - 17 Source: Rotary International Courtesy: www.eflashonline.org

WASH in SCHOOLS (WinS) WinS DISTRICT 3131 Clean water, better sanitation, teacher training, and hygiene education in schools can improve the health and education of children by creating a cycle of opportunity : improved education, less disease, increased school attendance, improved academic performance, and economic growth. W H AT I S T H E WA S H I N SCHOOLS TARGET CHALLENGE? The WASH in Schools Target Challenge is a pilot program of Rotary Foundation to motivate Rotary clubs to develop sustainable w a t e r, s a n i t a t i o n , h y g i e n e (collectively referred to as WA S H ) , t o i m p r o v e t h e

attendance of the students and to bring a behavioral change in the society through better hygiene practices using the expertise and resources available through Rotary's two areas of focus : "Basic Education & Literacy" and "Water & Sanitation". The program runs from January 2016 to July 2018 in five countries, all chosen for their strong, active involvement in school sanitation efforts: Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, India, and Kenya. The program will concentrate on measuring the effect on school attendance of WASH and basic education and literacy initiatives. It is based on Multi Level Approach that challenges our clubs to work together with schools for WASH

to reach three levels of achievements: Rotary One star where the achievements of the participating Rotary clubs and schools will be recognized at the district level by the District Governor and Rotary Two and Three stars where the achievements will be recognized by UNICEF and Rotary International. Recognition Levels: A Three-star Approach The first two levels (Rotary One Star and Rotary Two Stars) set benchmarks for water and sanitation facility upgrades, hygiene education, and teacher training along with key behavior change components; the third level (Rotary Three Stars) emphasizes incorporation into government initiatives and

curriculum enhancement. Rotary and UNICEF will recognize Rotary clubs and schools that meet the requirements for each level. Rotary One Star : Rotary District Governor Recognition Education: Teachers trained to teach hand-washing, begin taking daily attendance, and supervise daily group hand-washing at mealtimes. Facilities: Establish low-cost, point-of-use treatment of drinking water and gendersegregated toilets. Behavior change: Daily supervised hand washing before school meals and at group toilet times. Management: Plans created for operational maintenance and menstrual hygiene management. Continued on Page 8

Y O U T H From the Chairman's Desk: “Parivartan – Act of Kindness Project” for Interactors This is very unique project as it has unbelievable benefits to make child better person in life and can also change the society. It is very easy to implement, administer at very low cost. How to implement : · For whom: for school children from 7/8th standards · One 40 page notebook is given to all children. · They need to write daily in FEW lines what good work they have done. · Books are checked once in 10 to 15 days by volunteers / Teachers. · We request teachers to ask 3 students randomly to read their good work done yesterday. · Duration: minimum 45 to 60 days. · Cost: Rs.10/- per child for notebook · Child will learn automatically difference between what's good and what's bad. · Psychologically they become helpful to others in family, school and society. · They tend to go away from bad company and friends. · They become better citizen and are more acceptable in society, family. · When you read this notebooks, you come to know real pictures of

semi urban and rural areas. World Vision is a Community based international organization which has a presence in over 100 countries and has a strong presence in India. Besides providing manpower, it will also be funding the WASH projects to the extent of 50%. We, in district 3131 are planning to have massive drive in 2500 schools for WINS education. We will implement WINS with the help of ZP, Local bodies, NGO, Unicef, Rotary clubs in these schools. Initial discussions with ZP officials are going on.

society and problems. This helps children to become better person in life. If we can work towards removing these problems, then only we can make better society. Examples of good work by children are as follows: · Helping brother, sister, mother or father, friend, elderly people · Listening to teacher in class is also good work, Doing regular study · Giving glass of water to parents/grand parents, Telling story or spending time with them · Planting trees, Sharing food with friends, Not fighting in class and out side · Helping to read and write to senior people, Helping to cross roads, Helping in kitchen and many more……… Idea is to make them think about doing good work and when you do it for 45 to 60 days, it becomes a habit and even if few children become better human beings, the project is a success. It also gives us picture of the problems in the

society. My request to all my dear Rotarians is to kindly consider above points why this project is needful and useful for children. There's no specific notebook, you can use as you wish. Age group should be above 10 years. The notebook should preferably have hard cardboard cover so that it can last for 2 months. Friends are planning to train 10,000 students this year and request you to cover at least 3 schools with 50 to 100 students in your area. Please contact us to implement this unique project in your area.

M E M B E R S H I P MISSION MEMBERSHIP Dear Rotarian's, during Pre PETs and PETs, the membership team had urged you to add minimum 7/8 members during your installation. I am happy to announce that every club has responded very positively. Many clubs organized meetings with prospective members. We had circulated club list of members who have left Rotary in last five years. Few clubs tried to reconnect them. Clubs also focused on PI activities. All these efforts finally resulted in addition of good and resourceful members. We had decided to add 1500 net members. Initially all of us felt that it is a difficult target to achieve, but friends now I feel we can reset our target to 2000 members. We have excellent additions in certain clubs. To name a few : RC Bhigwan : + 40, RC Inspira :+25, RC Aundh : +21 RC Talegaon Dabhade : +20 RC Pimpri Town : +20, RCP Wisdom : +20, RCP Lokmanyanagar : +20, RCP Katraj : +19, RC Purander : +15, RC Indapur : +12, RC Baramati, RCP Gandhibhavan, RCP Hadapsar, RC Lonavala :10 members each. There many more, who have added members but not reported yet. We have applied for Charter for three new clubs. RC Talegaon Dabhade City, RC Panvel Elite, Rc Pune Smart City. out of which

we have received Charter for RC Talegaon Dabhade City. Friends this club will have 81 members when we install. I am sure by August end we send charter applications for another3 clubs. August is membership month and we need to work hard on membership. It is a lifeline of Rotary. We must add more Lady members and young members. Addition of good resourceful members can help Rotary to change our image. We have planned August Award event to honor all these performers. Our membership team has decided to have following Awards. These new awards : 1) Top two Awards per zone, makes 10 awards 2 ) To p 3 a w a r d s f o r l a d y Rotarians.

3) Balance awards for new clubs. 4) One exclusive award for a club who has added maximum number of members. Friends, I request all of you to forward us the details of your achievements and also upload on RI website. Please note that we will refer RI website for all your additions. If we continue to perform at this pace I am confident to achieve all our targets.

Child Development Safeguarding Children from Online Sexual Abuse – A Rotary District 3131 Initiative Every child having access to a smart phone or laptop and social media is a potential victim of online sexual abuse. Perpetrators defy age and geographical borders and have unregulated access possible for any child in any corner of the world. Children and young people face the risk of being exposed to abusive images, of being groomed or lured into sexual conversation or exploitation by adult offender or of being bullied or harassed online. Therefore, It is essential for stakeholders such as Teachers, Parents, Caregivers, School Counsellors, Psychologists, and also those engaged in Government or education systems to understand the extent of the problem, find ways and means of protecting the child and work towards becoming a hostile and an intolerant civil society against child sex abusers. When we talk about Child Development, it encompasses physical, emotional, mental,

social, language and cognitive development of the child. For a child to develop into confident and complete person, he needs guidance in various aspects of life. TEACH Committee of RID 3131 understands this need very well and has designed the programs accordingly. Child Development Avenue in Literacy team of Rotary District 3131, identified the need for creating awareness amongst stake holders and organized a one day workshop on “Keeping Children

safe Online” on 16th July 2016 at Pune under the guidance by DG Prashant and leadership of DLCC Rtn Vaishali Bhagwat and District Chairman – Child Development, Rtn Vrinda Walimbe. Rtn Yezdi Batliwala and Rtn Parag Muley were the convener and coconvener for the workshop. The program is designed to empower children and young people in India to better protect themselves from a number of risks in both online and offline, including sexual exploitation and abuse,

improve our partnerships with Indian law enforcement and make India a more hostile place for child sex offenders. The workshop was attended by more than four hundred participants who were teachers from schools all around Pune including Pune Municipal Corporation Schools, parents, school counselors, social workers, lawyers from juvenile court and even few grand parents. The highlight of the workshop was it was attended mainly by non Rotarians and thus this Literacy initiative also turned to be PI initiative too. "Each Rotarian is connecting link between the idealism of Rotary and their Trade or Profession". Paul Harris. The concept of "Rotarians' Referral Network" (RRN) is based on above principle. This is a product of Rotary District 3131 and "It is Vocational Service of Rotarians, By Rotarians & for Rotarians". Rotary International is established & flourished by Businessmen & Professionals. Vocational Service is very Important Avenue & this year, we have decided to make lot of Vocational activities. Generally, each & every Rotary Club is executing Minimum two programs under this Avenue – 1. Vocational Excellence Awards Distribution & 2 . Vo c a t i o n a l Vi s i t t o t h e Factories. Being Rotary is a major group of

Professionals & Businessmen, we are promoting our "Four Way Test". This is the concept to promote Fair Trade Practice amongst Rotarians & their professions. We are encouraging "Referral Business" through our Rotarians. As we know traffic signals are useless without civic sense, same way our "Business without Four Way Test" is not fair. It is proven fact that our 90% business goes through 'Referral Business'. Being Rotary is the Group of Professionals, then why not we encourage "Referral Business" through our True Rotarians? At present two Forums are st rd Meeting on 1 & 3 Saturday in Pune City & Pimpri Chinchwad area at 8 am. The simple agenda is, Meeting Call to Order, Four Way Test, 1 minute introduction of every Rotarians with his business activity, 10 minutes 3 Business Presentations of Rotarians, Referrals Exchanges & at the time of fellowship B2B meets.
