hen was the last time you sent someone a post card? When did you last walk into a souvenir store while travelling, pick out an image from the shelf, write a greeting on the little piece of cardboard, before going to the post office to buy stamps and mail it? For me, it has certainly been a while. After all, it is a lot faster to take a quick photo of your own tanned toes in front of the swimming pool and post it on Instagram.

This edition of 360 is a tribute to everyone who writes about their travels – whether in novels, travel articles, cook books, post cards or social media. ­Today we are all travel writers, which is a great thing. The world becomes smaller, the inspiration for travelling becomes bigger, and you save money for stamps.

However, on my next trip, I will send at least one post card – to myself. It might not reach my house before I am back home, but when it does, I will stick it on the fridge. Sorry, Instagram: Nothing is as nice as seeing my travel memories there.

år sendte du sist noen et postkort? Når var forrige gang du gikk inn i en suvenirbutikk på feriestedet ditt, valgte ut et motiv fra hylla, fant fram pennen og skrev noen velvalgte ord på det lille pappkortet, før du gikk på postkontoret, kjøpte frimerke og puttet det i nærmeste postkasse?

For min del begynner det å bli en stund siden. Det er tross alt ganske mye kjappere å knipse et bilde av sine egne solbrune tær foran svømmebassenget og poste det på Instagram.

Denne utgaven av 360 er en hyllest til alle som skriver om reisene sine, enten det er i romaner, reisereportasjer, kokebøker, på postkort eller i sosiale medier. I dag er vi alle reiseskribenter,­ og det er kjempefint. Det gjør verden mindre og inspirasjonen til å reise ­større – i tillegg til at man sparer ­pengene til porto.

På min neste reise skal jeg imidlertid sende minst ett postkort – til meg selv.

Det kommer kanskje ikke fram før jeg er hjemme igjen, men når det dukker opp i postkassen, skal jeg henge det opp på kjøleskapdøren min. Sorry, Instagram, men ingenting er så hyggelig som å ha ferieminnene sine der.

Hanne aardal Hanne Aardal is a freelance journalist and former editor working for some of the largest magazines and newspapers in Norway. She explored Barcelona by bike for this issue.

Per asbjørn risnes Jr. Per Asbjørn Risnes Jr. recently published a cook book for children, which will be released in Danish this fall. Just like the guys on page 110, he tried to re­ create Naples in his kitchen.

The real key to inspiration, though, is never look at other illustrations or other artists' work. Keep travelling, in mind and body."

The writing on the rocks Lukla Valley, Nepal The introduction of an airstrip has made the former tiny farming community Lukla and the Everest region accessible to more people than ever. Lukla is now a starting destination for many Himalayan expeditions going to Mount Everest. While trekking in the area you will come across many of these prayer stones inscripted with the Buddhist mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum".

En flystripe har gjort det tidligere bondesamfunnet Lukla og resten av Everest-regionen tilgjengelig for flere mennesker.

Lukla er nå startdestinasjon for mange Himalaya-ekspedisjoner mot Mount Everest, og langs stiene kan man se et stort antall bønnesteiner med det buddhistiske mantraet «Om Mani Padme Hum».

The WRITER'S INspiration Paris, France Feel extra inspired and creative when strolling the streets of Paris? You aren’t alone. The city has always been like flypaper for writers. Why? American author Roman Payne, who has lived in the French capital for more than a decade, believes that just as you would go to Italy, Spain or Iran to pick saffron, you head to Paris to harvest ideas for novels.

In David Burke's book "Writers in Paris," you can read about some of those who did the same.

The writer's city Tokyo, Japan If you were asked to name a Japanese author, you would more than likely think of Haruki Murakami first. The country's most famous writer is inextricably linked to Tokyo, largely due to Toru Watanabe – the main character of his book Norwegian Wood – wanders around the bustling capital.

Murakami's Japan is not about geishas, samurais and Hello Kitty characters, it's about ordinary people and urban life.

Writer Robert Louis Stevenson once said "Edinburgh is what Paris ought to be" as its literary production over the years has been vast. So Lonely Planet named Scotland's capital the world's most bookish city. Remember that lady who wrote on cafe napkins about a boy magician named Harry? That was here.

John Steinbeck's small, light blue writing cottage in Monterey, south of San Jose, can be rented for holidays. He used the house in the 1940s, and several of his stories are set in the valley along Salinas River, which reaches its end in Monterey.

Charles Dickens spent many summers in Broadstairs, east of London. The classic Nicholas Nickleby was written in a house on Albion Street that is now part of The Royal Albion Hotel.

Landmark. The spires of the gothic St. Vitus Cathedral are the landmark of the city, towering over the Old Town.

I

n the dark alleys and cobblestone squares, surrounded­

by Europe's most beautiful Baroque facades, I feel ­watched by the writer who more than any other ­described the nightmarish absurdities of totalitarianism. No w ­ onder I want to knock back a beer – the local selection is second to none – to drown out this inexplicable feeling of guilt. Just as poor Josef K. in The Trial, keeps trying to declare his ­innocence?

“But that is how the guilty speak,” his persecutors say.

Kafka follows me in posters, facades, T-shirts and ­souvenir shops. So why not let him be my guide to the city where he lived his short life.

CHOOSING A local author – living or dead – as a ­companion for a city tour rarely disappoints. It’s enriching, since you follow footsteps that often lead to new terrain.

Charles Bridge is where Prague's citizens and a growing horde of tourists come for a sunset stroll. On the bridge, I wonder why people wear Kafka’s likeness on their T-shirts.

Few have read his books. Maybe it’s not that strange. ­After all, this is a man who described how it feels to live like a ­repulsive insect, or a dog, or who, with his new fiancé, checks in to an exclusive health resort only to discover that

åde i de mørke smugene og på brosteinsbelagte,­ åpne torg omgitt av Europas vakreste barokk­ fasader, føler jeg meg overvåket av forfatteren som mer enn noen mante frem totalitærsamfunnets absurd­ iteter. Plus, a city like this just can’t depress you.

FROM OLD TOWN SQUARE, sculptures of saints lining Charles Bridge lead to Malá Strana, “The Little Quarter.” With its towers, spires and castles, it’s reminiscent of an ex­ travagant theatrical backdrop. The finest entrance to the Hradcany District of castles is up on Petri Hill on a path through Chotek Park. This is where Kafka did his evening promenades to study the bridge’s reflection in the dark waters of the Vltava River. Above him loomed the castle's gloomy outline.

During the tourist season, Malá Strana is the site of a daily battle to get close to the riches of the gothic St. Vitus Cathedral and Strahov Monastery's library of books. In the middle ages, alchemists worked in the tight quarters of the Golden Lane, Zlata Ulicka.

Its facade of princely glitter and finery, and interior that was nothing but a dirty, noisy inferno, inspired Kafka to write The Castle.

Parched by all these historical facts, I seek shade, tranquillity, spicy goulash soup and cold drinks under the low portals and ­intimate beer halls of Malá Strana.

Facts Franz KAFKA Franz Kafka was born in 1883 in Prague. He was of ­humble origins, but the family became wealthy and lived in the ­fashionable Old Town. His father wanted his son to take over the family business, but ­owning and running things went against Kafka’s grain.

He joined a cultural circle that met in "literary salons." That gave the ascetic author ideas for some stories that would become his most famous: The Metamorphosis, Amerika, Contemplation,The Castle and The Trial.

His final years were marked by illness, worry and self-sacrifice.

His strong sense of justice made him a champion of truth, but also a pessimist, as he feared that human lust for power would ultimately prevail.

He was a spokesman for his century.

A HUNDRED YEARS AGO, Kafka could have walked these s­ treets unnoticed. Today, tourism has become the latest in a series of human incursions that over the years has left its mark on Prague. Cheap booze in a seedy drinking hole, or bachelor and bachelorette parties under Parížská Street's elegant wrought-iron lanterns is to some a less charming part of a stay in Prague. Not even the old, and until recently run down, Jewish quarter, Josefov, has been spared.

The Trial describes Josefov’s stone buildings and “­ yellow houses,” once brothels and gambling dens where sin ­worked overtime while Orthodox Jews locked their doors and ­observed the Sabbath. Kafka was from a Jewish family, and often wandered through what is now one of Prague's major attractions, the Old Jewish Cemetery in Josefov, with its headstones leaning like helter-skelter, moss-covered stone dwarfs. Nostalgia is big business in Prague. If in doubt, just look at the synagogue clock: its hands go backwards.

Old Town. Every hour on the hour huge crowds gather in the Old Town to watch the astronomical clock, and its brief, but mesmerising puppet performance.

EVERYTHING IS CLOSE to the Old Town ­ quare (Staromestske Nam) and W S ­ enceslas Square. It is easy to follow the Kafka family’s trail. Both squares are surrounded­by the Old Town Hall with its famous astronomical­ clock, and mansions of ­ crumbling Art N­ouveau and Rococo facades. In addition, you can find St. N ­ icholas Church and the Church of Mother of God in front of Týn Cathedral with their extravagant Gothic ­towers and golden spires.

Use your legs – and ears – so you don’t miss Prague’s street musicians. Pan ­flutists perform tunes by Czech composer S ­ metana and unemployed musicians use the arches for their acoustics.

It's not just tourists who embrace Kafka.

His fellow citizens do too.

A few steps down from Neruda's old home is one of his favourite haunts, which opened in 1930. The writer always sat at one special table, strategically located near the bar with a view of street life. Today, a gold plaque with his name hangs over that table. The owner Guillermo recommends dish #38 on the menu.

The Cannes of books In Frankfurt, the world gathers for the biggest book fair of the year.

The city of Frankfurt is known as the centre of the G ­ erman economy; a city of steel, glass and expensive, solid German cars. ­Nevertheless, Frankfurt may be best known for its annual, fall book fair.

The Frankfurt Book Fair is to the book world what Cannes is to the world of film, a giant showcase where agree­ ments (and letters of intent) are signed and book-publishing rights are sold to the highest foreign bidder. In short, it is a huge marketplace, spanning five days, with 7,500 exhibitors from more than 110 countries. The first three days are for those working in the industry only, while doors to the huge exhibition hall open to all craving literature on the final two days.

Facts Barcelona novels to love Many authors have set their books in the Catalan capital.

Here are our favourites: The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón This magical thriller, which has sold more than twelwe million copies, is about young Daniel Sempere, who d ­ iscovers a very special book written by a mysterious author. The Angel's Game came out seven years later as a prequel to the bestseller. It is also a real ­page-turner!

The City of Marvels by ­Eduardo Mendoza We follow the poor farm boy Onofre Bouvila between ­Barcelona’s two World Fairs, in 1888 and 1929. He keeps alive in the big city as a thief and fence. Eventually, he becomes a gangster and rich industrialist­before his life ends under mysterious ­circumstances.

The South by Colm Tóibín The Irish writer lived three years in Barcelona and wrote two novels. The main character Katherine Proctor leaves her husband and son in Ireland and ends up in the Catalan capital.

The town is still dominated by the Franco dictatorship, and when Katherine meets Miguel, they flee to the Pyrenees.

Anything goes. Hofman is from the ­ etherlands and, after just eight months in N the city, she knows all the streets by heart.

“Bicycle rules are simple. If there is a bike path, follow it. If not, stay to the right of the cars. You can also ride on the sidewalk if it is more than four metres (13 feet) wide.

But almost anything goes, since the police ­certainly don’t care,” she says, laughing.

Barcelona is aiming to become Europe’s number 1­cycling city. The city centre alone has 200 kilometres (more than 300 miles) of bike lanes. Bike rental companies are every­ where, and you can’t go far without running into a group of tourists on brightly coloured bikes. The only place you’re not allowed to ride is on the pedestrian street La Rambla, which is so packed with tourists that it’s worth steering clear of anyway.

We ride through the upscale Eixample district, with luxury shops, five-star hotels and such Gaudí attractions as La Sagrada Familia,­La Pedrera and Casa Batlló. The streets are wide and straight, often with beautiful rows of trees and bike paths down the middle.

“This is the newest part of Barcelona. It was built in the 1800s, outside the original city,” says Hofman.

Men der er det så trangt med turister at det er best å styre unna uansett.

Vi sykler gjennom den eksklusive bydelen­ Eixample, som er preget av luksusbutikker,­ 5-stjerners hoteller og kjente Gaudí-­ attraksjoner som La Sagrada Familia, La ­Pedrera og Casa Batlló. Gatene er rette og brede, ofte med vakre rekker av trær og sykkel­stier i midten.

– Dette er den nyeste delen av Barcelona.

ost people want us to s ­urprise them. They’ve seen the big attractions, and want new ex­ ­ periences,” says bike tour guide Natasja Iris Hofman. At Cruising Barcelona in the Gracìa district, you can join a tour or rent a bike and explore on your own.

We decide on an afternoon tour and choose Electra cruising bikes. One is red and one blue, both with painted decorations and flowers on their baskets. Our thighs ­tremble a bit as we pedal out onto the Avinguda ­Diagonal, a main street with several busy lanes both ways. Fortunately, we don’t have to ride far before turning onto a bike path.

“Anyone can ride a bike in Barcelona,” says Natasja. “We’ve had everyone from six year olds to grandmothers. Last week, a woman of 74 took a tour.”

– Alle kan sykle i Barcelona. Vi har hatt med oss både seksåringer og bestemødre, i forrige uke var en dame på 74 med på tur, sier Natasja.

streets are narrower, with stronger colours and delightful fragrances. Coffee bars, tapas restaurants and bountiful fruit and vegetable shops all rub shoulders, and small specialty shops offer everything from local perfumes to religious icons.

We roll through Barceloneta, with its wide promenades and beautiful beach views, and then wind through the narrow streets of El Born, the slightly cooler and more artistic neighbour of old town Barri Gòtic. There are ­plenty of galleries, design shops and tapas bars to discover.

“My favourite restaurant is called La Luna. It’s there,” says Hofman, pointing into a narrow alley.

It’s easy to ride a bike in Barcelona. ­Although much of the city lies on a gentle slope down to the sea, and there is heavy ­traffic, it is easy to get around. There is only one thing we need to practice, Hofman calls over her shoulder as we tread homeward: “When riding in Barcelona, fight for your rights. Use the bell!”

Books on display A new library opening in Norway doesn’t often make The Huffington Post and Wallpaper, but in 2011, it did just that because of its innovative design.

The new culture centre and library for the town of Vennesla and its highly praised "rib cage" roof were designed by architects Siv Helene Stangeland and Reinhard Kropf.

... and the band played on CONCERT: Norwegian writer Tore Renberg gave us Jarle Klepp, one of the most loved and debated fi ­ ctional characters of the past decade.

Renberg has written screenplays and slammed the doors of every literary room and parlour he has entered.

He is a writer who doesn’t ask for attention, he seizes it. And alongside literary p ­ rojects, he makes music. In connection­with his novel Angrep fra alle kanter (Attacks from All Sides), he has gone on tour with the group Lemen, which was created in 1994 in Bergen. They have had three concerts that no one remembers, but can boast a solid line-up, including Norwegian­ Spelleman­prisen music award w ­ inner Tønes and, on drums, a literary ­superstar, My Struggle author Karl Ove Knausgård.

KONSERT: I Jarle Klepp har han gitt oss en av de mest elskede og debatterte romanfigurene de siste ti årene, han har skrevet filmmanus og smelt med dørene i alle litterære rom og s ­ alonger han har steget inn i. Kort sagt, Tore Renberg er en forfatter som ikke ber om oppmerksomhet­ – han tar den. Library: Sometimes it’s a bit much, page after page of type in books so thick that you could build a house with them.

This is where the Serieteket at the Deichmanske Library in the Grünerløkka neighbourhood comes to the rescue. The upstairs holds roughly 10,000 comics you can borrow, as well as various launches and ex­hibitions, such as Seriefest (Series Fest) and the well established Oslo Comics Expo. These attract ­hundreds of cartoon enthusiasts and internationally recognised artists in the ever-growing art form of comics and graphic novels. Try the cinnamon buns in the charming, ad hoc-like cafe, dip them in coffee and sit down with a comic such as Donald Duck, Marvel Comics, Japanese manga, or Joe Sacco's graphic novels from Gaza. You’re bound to find something to your liking.

SIGHTSEEING: Few, if any, ­Norwegians have been included in as many books of great quotations­as Henrik Ibsen, whether it be for "Peer, you are ­lying!" or "Rob the average man of his life illusion and you rob him of his happiness at the same stroke,” both of which are now engraved in the asphalt of Oslo’s main street. The quotes wind through the heart of the capital, along both sides of the main street, Karl Johans gate, past the Grand Hotel and the Parliament, past the Foreign Ministry to the Ibsen Museum at the corner of Henrik Ibsen's gate and Arbins gate. Art project "Ibsen Quotes" was devised by artists Ingrid Falk and Gustavo Aguerre (FA+), and consists of 69 citations made of 4,011 steel letters. All were voted for by ordinary citizens, in tandem with celebrities, actors and school classes that were encouraged to choose Ibsenian­ quotes from poetry, drama, speeches and letters. Fun fact: A new typeface was developed for the project, called the Oslo Font.

Over the treetops ACTIVITY: lt's been a while since humanity climbed down from the trees, but that doesn’t mean we can’t go back up. On the contrary, up in the treetops is where you hear your primal self singing inside your head, at least if you’re hooked to a wire and wearing safety gear. The Climbing Park at the Tryvann area is an amusement park in the trees, where you can choose a variety of routes and degrees of difficulty. The park boasts over 150 ­elements in the trees on nine different trails of varying difficulty, and you can find yourself anywhere from a half metre (a couple feet) above the ground to 20 metres (65 feet) up in the trees. Or, best of all: a total of 900 metres (nearly 3,000 feet) of zip-lines, a wire path that lets you sail through the air, past the trees, over the ground and high above Tårn­bakken. If you really want to swing from vines, check out the so-called Tarzan jump. The park is open throughout September.

A shelfish life bookstore: Lou Reed loved it. Allen Ginsberg called it the world's best bookstore. For book lovers – true book lovers – there is really only one option in Oslo: Tronsmo, the fine, strange little two-storey bookstore at Tullinløkka behind the National Gallery, which has been there for 41 years. Tronsmo has everything you never knew existed, things you didn't think could have their own bookcase sections; here you can find an entire wall with literature ­critical of globalisation, geopolitics; new or old political classics; a wide range of ­literature on music; a huge section of photo books; books on art, design, ­fashion, graffiti and street art; ­Norwegian and translated fiction; English-language fiction; plenty of shelf space for fiction from the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Latin America; and even more for nonfiction from the same places. In short: the universe unfolds in all its splendour and majesty here. Bøker om og med kunst, design, mote, grafitti, street-art. Norsk og oversatt skjønnlitteratur, engelskspråklig skjønnlitteratur, flere hyllemeter med romaner fra Midtøsten, Afrika, Asia og Latin-Amerika og enda flere med sakprosa på de samme områdene.

Kort sagt: Universet åpner seg i all sin prakt og velde her inne. Og dette er bare i første etasje – i kjelleren fins et like stort mannfold av verdens beste tegneserier.

The French connection There is a place in Oslo for lovers of all things French.

BOOKSTORE: Have a soft spot for Paris? Dream of Provence? Long for a Musette accordion, coq au vin and heavy Bordeaux wines? Do you devour films featuring Alain Delon and Brigitte Bardot, wash the floor to the music of Serge Gainsbourg, and did you cry when Zinedine Zidane retired? If so, you are a born Francophile, and this is just the bookstore and cafe for you in Oslo. At Zazie, you’ll find books in French and Norwegian, comics, small toys, postcards, photographs and a cafe downstairs. Blandine Girard, the store's proprietor, has a master's degree in modern French and literature plus a master's degree in linguistics from the University of Lyon. A few years ago Girard travelled to Oslo, and liked it so much that she stayed. She opened Zazie three years ago to promote French literature in Norway, as well as to create a nice, independent French environment where Francophiles can enjoy themselves and feel at home. The name came from Raymond Quenau’s Zazie in the Metro, a book you will certainly find there, along with many others from Albert Camus, Marguerite Duras, Flaubert and Tintin. Voilà.

For noen år siden reiste Girard til Oslo, hvor hun likte seg så godt at hun like godt slo seg ned der, og for tre år siden åpnet hun dørene til Zazie, med det for øye å fremme fransk litteratur i Norge, samt skape et uavhengig og hyggelig fransk miljø hvor fransk­interesserte kunne trives og føle seg hjemme. Navnet har hun tatt etter Raymond Quenaus underfundige Zazie tar ­metroen – en bok du selvsagt finner der inne, side om side med Albert Camus, Marguerite Duras, Flaubert og Tintin. Voilà.

The Italian job Dag Tjersland has spent almost as much of his adult life in Italy as in Norway.

You can tell by the food he cooks. Dag Tjersland har tilbrakt like mye tid i Italia som i Norge. Det merkes på maten han lager.

RESTURANT: He has worked at Oslo Michelin-star ­restaurants under Bent Stiansen at Statholdergaarden and Eyvind Hellstrøm at Bagatelle. But closest to his heart is the simple fare of the Mediterranean, which is why he opened Baltazar in 1997. Many say the Italian restaurant at downtown Oslo’s Kirkeristen Bazaar is still the nation’s best, well into its second decade. But Dag Tjersland isn’t one to rest on his laurels, so earlier this summer he opened Skur 33, a 250-seat seafood restaurant in an old boat shed on the City Hall Wharf.

“A nice seafood platter is great, but for me it is just as important that food is something social,” says ­Tjersland about his self-composed rustic favourite, a deep pan full of delicacies­from the sea, in a strong tomato sauce. Mussels, crab, lobster, dried cod and mackerel are served in a large pan, perfect for two to three people who are not afraid to eat with their fingers or spill on the tablecloth.

“Our focus is N ­ orwegian ingredients and local food, and we want to do it with an Italian twist, says the chef, who also has a small restaurant in the village of Lucca in Tuscany.

In addition, Tjersland has written cooking and lifestyle books on Italian cuisine and culture.

“It just turned out like that, after I was touring as a young man and stumbled on a small restaurant in Italy, that turned out to have a Michelin star. It opened my eyes to this kind of simple­but tasty food. Since then, I have probably spent almost as much of my life in Italy as in Norway.

RESTURANT: Han har jobbet på Bent Stiansens Statholder­ gaarden og på Eyvind Hellstrøms Bagatelle, men det er middel­havslandenes ukompliserte bondekost som står hans hjerte nærmest. Derfor åpnet han i 1997 Balthazar, den italienske­restauranten på Kirkeristen mange mener er l­ andets beste, snart 20 år etter oppstarten. Men Dag Tjersland lot det ikke stoppe der: Tidligere i sommer åpnet han Skur 33, sjømatrestauranten i et gammelt båtskur på Rådhusbrygga, med plass til 250 spisegjester.

– Det er flott med et vakkert skalldyrplatå, men for meg er det like viktig at maten er en sosial ting, sier Tjersland om en av sine selvkomponerte favoritter på menyen: en dyp panne full av havets delikatesser, i en sterk tomatbasert saus. ­Blåskjell, krabbe, hummer, klippfisk og makrell serveres i én stor panne – perfekt for to til tre personer som ikke er redde for å spise med fingrene eller søle på duken.

– Trenden er norske råvarer og kortreist mat, og vi ønsker å gjøre det med vår italienske tvist, forteller kokken, som også har en liten restaurant i den lille byen Lucca i Toscana.­ Tjersland har dessuten skrevet flere koke- og livsstilsbøker om italiensk­mat og kultur.

– Det ble bare sånn, etter at jeg på en tur i ungdommen snublet inn på en liten restaurant i Italia, og det etterpå viste seg at den hadde stjerne i Michelinguiden. Det åpnet øynene mine for denne type enkel, men smakfull mat. Siden har jeg sannsynligvis brukt nesten like mye av mitt voksne liv i Italia som i Norge.

This year the festival celebrates the 100th ­anniversary of Tarzan, king of the jungle, and Tarzan i­llustrator ­Thomas Yeates will be in attend­ance. From 19 to 21 September.

New Norwegian Festival / Ny­ norskfestival The New Norwegian (­Nynorsk) language literature days, held in ­Aurland in Sogn og ­Fjordane ­county, started with the ­distribution of New Norwegian songbooks to all newborns in the community. That kicked off what is now an annual festival packed with literature, language, music, art and humour. Nynorsk is alive and well, as is the festival that runs from 31 ­October to 2 November this year.

Nynorske litteraturdagar i ­Aurland i Sogn og Fjordane startet en gang i tiden med utdeling av nynorske sangbøker til alle nyfødte i ­kommunen.

Så ballet det på seg, og nå har det blitt en årlig festival spekket med litteratur, språk, musikk, kunst og ­humor. Språket er levende, og det skal ­festivalen også være. I år varer den fra 31. oktober til 2. november.

Film in the north / Film i nord The world's northernmost film f­ estival is held at North Cape, and from 10 to 14 September, films will roll in the far north. The ­festival has become an important forum for quality films, as well as for the development of films from the north.

It also includes seminars, social events, fireworks and a film festival parade, led by Honningsvåg Music Club.

At first glance it is a clean and pretty city. But under the surface, it smoulders. Welcome to the universe of Jo Nesbø and his fictional detective, Harry Hole. that is why you can join a two-hour guided tour of Harry Hole’s universe,­as it wanders through Oslo neighbourhoods.

The centre of Hole’s universe is said to be his two homes in the St. Hanshaugen/Bislett neighbourhood, an apartment on ­Sophie's Street and his second home, the traditional dive bar called Schrøders. But the Oslo Guidebureau starts­its tour elsewhere, on Karl Johans gate, Oslo’s main street.

“Harry Hole is actually more at home on the other side of Egertorget Square,” says guide Marianne Nygaard, “that being the part of the main street that runs down to the Oslo Central Station, where the welfare types are more prevalent,­and Harry doesn’t stand out as much.”

The tour includes about 10 stops, the next being the ­National Theatre, an important venue in The Devil’s Star, in which a serial killer is on the loose during the peak of summer and Hole is so drunk that he doesn’t even dare to show himself at his usual haunt. Across from the theatre is the venerable Theatercafeen (Theater Cafe), which The New York Times named one of the world's 10 most beautiful­ Viennese-styled cafes, and where the book’s theatre ­

only one town can call itself a big city, and that’s Oslo, a marvellous place that no one leaves ­unmarked –­at least according to the opening lines of ­Norwegian writer Knut Hamsun's book Hunger. That was long ago, in 1890, when the city was called Christiania, and ruled by ­Sweden. The world was in the waning years of the nineteenth c­ entury and people had yet to see m ­ oving pictures. Today’s Oslo is quite different from the one ­ ­Hamsun’s protagonist ­wandered around in, starving. Yet one thing remains the same: Oslo is still the backdrop for the lives of alienated night owls, in particular, perhaps, ­Harry Hole; Norwegian crime writer Jo Nesbø’s alcoholic police ­detective keeps getting sucked deep into the capital's dark underworld, into a filthy cesspool of violence, substance abuse and powerlessness. – Nå trives i grunnen Harry Hole bedre på den andre ­siden av Egertorget, forteller guide Marianne Nygaard der hun står med Spikersuppa bak seg.

– Altså den delen av Karl Johan som løper ned mot Oslo S, hvor de sosiale kasusene er en hel del flere, og Harry ikke stikker seg like mye ut.

Turen inneholder cirka ti sjekkpunkter, og neste punkt på ruta er Nationaltheatret. Det samme Nationaltheatret som spiller en viktig rolle i Marekors, hvor en seriemorder­ går løs i fellesferien og Harry Hole selv er i en slik død­ drukken tilstand at han ikke engang våger å vise seg på sitt stamsted. director­Barli has his daily lunch of herring on bread with fennel seeds, says Nygaard, nodding toward Henrik Ibsen on the pedestal outside the theatre entrance.

“Ibsen is the world’s second-most performed playwright, after Shakespeare, but sometimes one wonders if Nesbø’s name is now at least as well known abroad,” she said.

Next stop: Grand Hotel (Ibsen's own haunt), an important­ setting in the Nesbø book Phantom, in which a Salvation­ Army soldier is murdered in the toilet of Egertorget’s Cafe Biscuit, called Mona Lisa in real life.

“A fun thing with Nesbø is that sometimes he keeps the name of a place, and sometimes he makes up a new name or moves it 100 metres east. Sometimes you can scratch your head for a long time, and sometimes you i­ mmediately know where Hole is in Oslo,” says Nygaard.

The tour continues to the Oslo City Courthouse. The tour changed after 22 July 2010, when terror attacks in Oslo and on the island of Utøya left 77 people dead.

“After July 22, it has become almost impossible to get into the police station at Grønland, Hole’s workplace, so the closest we get is the courthouse and this courtroom,” says Nygaard, after we have taken the elevator seven floors up and stood outside courtroom 719, where Hole was repeatedly­­summoned as a witness, including in the book The ­Redbreast.

“The furnishings are Spartan. We can probably assume that Harry Hole never owned an iron, and that he has one suit and one police uniform, both at the back of the closet,” she says.

The nearly two-hour tour ends at the Radisson Blu Hotel on Holbergs plass, a important setting in The Redbreast. The ­ Hotel is known for the view of Oslo’s 17 of May C ­ onstitution Day parade from its most ­expensive suite, which currently serves as Jordan’s embassy. The tour ends at Summit 21 bar with views over Harry Hole’s Oslo, as he loves and hates it.

Richard Booth probably didn’t know what he was getting into in the early 1960s when he began selling trailer loads of used books in the unused cinema in the Welsh hamlet of Hay-onWye. Today's literary festival in Hay is among the world's largest, and the town that was once dying on the vine now draws millions of visitors a year. Not only that, but Hay also inspired many other "Book Towns." The first and best known in Norway is Fjærland in Sogn og Fjordane county, which opened as "The Norwegian Book Town" in 1995.

It boasts four kilometres (2.5 miles) of bookshelves. In 2002, Norway’s second Book Town opened in Tvedestrand, billing itself as "The Book Town on Skagerrak Strait."

Alf Prøysen is­ ­ b eing celebrated with concerts and performances showcasing the ­cherished writer and performer’s enormous body of songs and stories. Most of Prøysen’s writings were set in places like his tiny home village of Rudshøgda in eastern Norway’s ­Hedmark County. He grew up on a small ­tenant farm, called Prøysen, which was part of the large Hjelmstad farm on Præstvegen (The Priest’s Road) in Ringsaker township.

The writer lived there from his birth on 23 July 1914 until 1939, and later bought the humble Prøysenstua (The Prøysen Cottage) for his parents.

The farm is open for tours, and is near the new Prøysen House. Designed by the ­Norwegian architects Snøhetta, it opened on 23 July 2014, the centennial of Prøysen’s birth. The new Prøysenhuset has a stage, activity room, cafe and shop, and in 2015 a permanent exhibition called “Livets Runde” (The Circle of Life) opens to showcase Prøysen’s entire body of work. hroughout 2014,

Det aller meste av det Prøysen skrev, ­foregikk i et miljø som lignet på stedet hvor han selv vokste opp: den vesle bygda ­ Rudshøgda i Hedmark.­Det var store gårder og små husmannsplasser, slik som dikterens eget ­ barndomshjem på husmannsplassen Prøy­ sen, som hørte til g­ården H ­ jelmstad ved ­Præst­vegen­ i ­Ringsaker. Her bodde ­Prøysen fra han ble født til 1939, og han kjøpte ­senere huset, kjent som Prøysenstua, som foreldrenes­ bosted.

Husmannsplassen er fortsatt åpent for omvisninger, og like ved ligger det ­splitter nye Prøysenhuset, som er bygget av det norske a­rkitektfirmaet Snøhetta og åpnet ­ på P ­ røysens hundreårsdag 23. juli. Det nye Prøysen­huset rommer scene, aktivitetsrom, kafé og butikk, men først i 2015 åpner den store og ­ ­ permanente utstillingen «Livets ­runde», som skal vise hele Prøysens livsverk.

New major airport in Beijing / Ny storflyplass i Beijing Air traffic is growing fast in China, and a new airport is now being built to relieve the overloaded Beijing Capital International Airport. When ­completed, Beijing Daxing Inter­national Airport, which is located south of the city, will have a capacity of 72 million ­passengers a year. The current airport handles 80 million travellers annually, but experts say as many as 142 m ­ illion passengers will land in Bejing in 2020.

Freshly trained British Royal Air Force officer Roald Dahl is on his way from Egypt to Libya in his Gloster Gladiator ­biplane to join the fray. It’s dusk. Dahl can’t find the base. The fuel tank is nearly empty. There’ s no way out; he has to crash land in the desert. A landing wheel hits a rock, tipping the nose of the aircraft forward. Dahl suffers serious head injuries.

He comes to and smells burning aircraft fuel.

He really just wants to slip back into uncon­ sciousness, but finds the strength to climb out, away from the flames.

Dahl was found battered but alive that evening. It turned out that he had been ­given the wrong coordinates, and ended up in no man's land between British and ­Italian ­forces. For a month, Dahl's face was too swol­ len to even tell if his vision was intact. Just five months later, he was back in the air, as a pilot in 80 Squadron, stationed near Athens.

During the “Battle of Greece” in April 1941, Dahl shot down his first plane, a G ­ erman Junkers Ju 88. After the Germans ­conquered Athens, Dahl was stationed in Haifa in former Palestine. From there, he flew ­ ­frequent raids. However, intense h ­ eadaches, which made him faint while in the air, ended his aviation career after just 32 days. t's 19 September 1940:

The crash was not only the basis of his first published s­ tory, but also sparked his desire to be a storyteller. Dahl himself believed that his brain injury changed him, ­triggering the urge to write and firing up his imagination, according to Donald Sturrock, who pub­ lished an authorised biography of Dahl in 2010.

RAF pilots o ­ ften invoked gremlins to explain ­mechanical troubles and mishaps, and many pilots were adamant about having seen the little c­ reatures tampering with equipment before things went awry. It was Dahl who made gremlins famous outside the RAF. In 1946, the short story collection Over to You. Ten Stories of Flyers and Flying was ­published. Unlike Dahl's later work, these were thoughtful stories for an adult audi­ ence. Nor did they have the surprise ending that became a Dahl trademark.

Flying is an element in several other books. In his last release, The Minpins, he described, for example, the magical feeling of sliding through the skies.

great thing about vacations is becoming relaxed enough to dive deep into a good book. Many find such peace on a sunbed in a warm climate, but, if you really love books, there are lots of places to surround yourself with hundreds of thousands, even millions, of tomes.

While some libraries are simply book collections – literature warehouses, of sorts – others are historical landmarks, ­architectural gems and tourist magnets all in one. Photo­ grapher Will Pryce and author James Campbell travelled the world ­visiting libraries of monasteries and universities in a journey that resulted in the book The Library: A World History (2013). Some libraries are ancient and protected with books that can only be admired from afar while others are in regular use, ­offering you a chance to escape into the paradise of the ­written word for hours on end. grew up in pubs that their mother ran.

James became a cook. But both brothers ended up stuck in desk jobs they hated. It was time to act before it was too late.

So they built a mobile oven and went on a pizza pilgrimage to Italy.

“A Piaggio Ape (pronounced ah-peh) is a three-wheel ­moped, with a 700-kilogram (1,500 pound) stone oven in the back,” says James about the pizza-mobile they drove through Italy and home to London.

The trip took six weeks and hit top speeds of 60 kph ­­(35 mph), through Calabria, Campania, Tuscany and ­Liguria in the north. The stately pace - joggers would pass them uphill – allowed them to truly experience the impact of geography on food culture in the country.

The food was simpler and "poorer" in the south, with fruit, chili, vegetables, seafood and pasta. Heading north, toward the richer parts of Italy, ingredients became more expensive, including the cheeses, truffles and Parma. Pizza culture also varied. The brothers say it just isn’t so that pizza tastes b ­ etter simply because it’s in Italy. Most pizzas in ­Turin, ­Milan or Venice are no better than what you get at home. However, Naples and Rome were something else altogether.

Pizzakulturen varierer også. Brødrene mener det slett ikke er slik at all pizza er god bare fordi du spiser den i Italia. Majoriteten av pizzaer i Torino, Milano eller ­Venezia er sjelden bedre enn den du får hjemme. Men Napoli og Roma er en helt annen vise: Napolitanerene skiller e­ gentlig bare mellom to typer pizza: Margherita og ­Marinara. Og her er både fremstilling og råvarer nærmest en religion. De mer

NEAPOLITAN PIZZA DOUGH Ingredients: Makes 8 x 10 inch pizza bases • 1kg "00 flour" with a high gluten content • 2 g fresh yeast • 600 ml cold water • 30 g salt PREPARATION: Tip the flour onto your work service and make a well in the centre. Dissolve your yeast in the water and pour into the middle of the well a little at a time whilst using your hands to bring the walls of the flour in so that the water begins to thicken.

Once you’ve reached the ­consistency of custard, add the salt and bring in the rest of the flour until it comes together as a dough. Knead for 10–15 minutes.

Cover and leave to rest for 10 ­minutes before kneading again quickly for 10 seconds (this helps to develop the flavour and the gluten).

Divide the dough into 200g balls and leave to rest overnight or for at least 8 hours (24 hours is optimal, 48 hours maximum) in a sealed container or a deep baking dish sprinkled with flour and covered in cling film. Remember to leave space for each of your dough balls because, as the gluten relaxes, they will spread out to take up twice the diameter that they do initially.

Napolitansk pizzadeig Ingredienser: Til 8 x 25 cm pizzabaser • 1 kg finmalt (00) hvetemel • 2 g fersk gjær (ca. to erter) • 600 ml kaldt vann • 30 g salt TILBEREDNING: Ha hvetemelet på en arbeidsbenk eller bakefjøl og lag en fordypning i midten.

Løs opp gjæren i vannet og hell det litt og litt i midten av melet, mens du bruker hendene til å røre inn melet etter hvert. Når du har fått konsistens omtrent som vaniljekrem, har du i saltet og resten av melet og rører til det blir en fast deig. Kna i 10-15 ­minutter.

Dekk til med plast og la deigen hvile i 10 minutter før du elter raskt i 10 sekunder til (dette hjelper å utvikle smak og glutenbindinger.) Del deigen i boller på ca. 200 gram og la dem hvile i en tett beholder eller en tildekket bakeform over natten eller minst åtte timer (­maksimum 24 timer). Husk at deigballene må ha plass til å doble seg i størrelse. Ta av en liten deigball som du lagrer i en tett boks i kjøleskapet til neste gang du lager pizza.

“A pizza chef in Rome set fire to a small rosemary sprig and put it out by sticking it in a pizza in front of us. Anything to get the special flavour,” says James.

The pilgrimage was a TV series on the Food

Network, and of course a cookbook, ­Pizza Pilgrims: Recipes from the Backstreets of Italy, which tells about the route, the people and the Italian food they ate along the way.

The brothers collected pizza recipes, met pizza chefs, tested original pizza ingredi­ ents and, not least: bought a small ball of pizza dough from the legendary Da Michele ­pizzeria in Naples.

“It has been the basis for all of our pizza dough. We only save a small lump every day as the starter for the next day's pizza,” says James.

They set up their tiny pizza moped at an old vegetable market in London’s Soho, where they tested their pizza skills before opening a real pizzeria.

“It was fantastic to be able to make all our mistakes in a parking lot before binding ­ourselves to four solid walls and opening a ­restaurant,” says James.

“The pilgrimage turned us into pizza snobs, but we can live with it,” he says with a chuckle.

– Den har dannet utgangspunktet for alle pizzadeigene våre siden. Vi bare sparer en liten klump hver dag, som blir starten til neste dags pizza, sier James.

Den lille pizzamopeden satte de opp på et gammelt grønnsaksmarked i Soho, der de testet pizzakunnskapene sine, før de ­omsider åpnet sin ordentlige pizzeria.

– Det var fantastisk å gjøre alle feilene på en parkeringsplass før du binder deg til fire vegger og åpner en restaurant, sier James.

It is well regarded for, and primarily associated with, ­Sauvignon blanc.

Prestigious award to Oslo Airport / Prestisjetung miljøpris til Osl Oslo Airport has been awarded the Airports Council International (ACI) "ECO Innovation Award" for 2014.

The prize honours airports that show outstanding ­environmental performance, especially in terms of ­innovative environmental management.

If you take an empty water bottle through security, you’ll find numerous places in the terminal to fill it up. Right after security are two drinking fountains. In the domestic pier, water is available near gates 15, 19B, 19E and 20. On the international pier, you can fill your bottles outside the men’s and women’s restrooms (down the stairs by the crates in Duty Free) and by gate 43.

Starting in 2015, travellers arriving in Oslo on international flights will no longer have to claim baggage and check it in again for ­domestic flights. That also means they won’t have to clear security a second time. The new system ­applies to international arrival with a domestic ­connection.

Fra 2015 slipper reisende som kommer fra utlandet via Oslo Lufthavn å hente ut og sjekke inn bagasjen på ny for sin innenriksreise. Passasjer­en unngår dermed ny sikkerhets­ kontroll. ­Ordningen gjelder for reisende fra utland til innland.

Efficiency. The option of working while waiting for a plane is important to today’s travellers.

Time for business Many Oslo Airport passengers want to be able to work while travelling.

Now everything is in place for that. Mange av Oslo Lufthavns passasjerer ønsker å ha muligheten til å kunne jobbe når de er på reise. Det er det nå lagt til rette for.

A new work zone in the international pier now offers travellers peaceful surroundings for focusing on work. The area is clearly marked, and is near the passport checkpoint at the far end of the pier. The work zone has chairs with double electrical sockets, separate computer stands and shielding to reduce noise and provide privacy. In addition, bar tables line the windows, letting you do some airplane spotting while you work.

"We know there is great demand for work areas from our business travellers. We have therefore reconfigured this area to accommodate those wishes. We hope that the zone will be well received," says Joachim W. Andersen, media manager at Oslo Airport.

The airport is also looking at the possibility of opening a similar area on the domestic pier.

"This will enhance our passengers’ travel experience. We are constantly working to come up with solutions in areas where we notice a demand," says Andersen.

– Vi vet det er stor etterspørsel etter arbeidsområder fra våre forretnings­reisende. Derfor har vi tilrettelagt dette området for å imøtekomme ønskene. Vi håper dette blir sett på som et positivt tiltak, sier medieansvarlig ved Oslo Lufthavn, Joachim W. Andersen.

Man ser også på muligheten for å etablere et tilsvarende område i innlandspiren.

– Dette vil øke passasjeropplevelsen. Vi arbeider hele tiden for å komme opp med løsninger på områder der vi merker etterspørsel, sier Andersen.

The railway station is integrated­into the Terminal, and passengers can easily walk from the platform to the D ­ eparture and Arrival Halls under cover, to the multi-storey car park, and to the bus and taxi stops outside the ­Terminal.

Taxi There is a taxi stop on the Arrival level outside the Terminal.

Car Rental All the car hire firms have counters at the west end of the ­Arrival Hall (near the railway station).

Security At Oslo Airport, all passengers must go through security control before they can board their flights. You can help make the security control as efficient as possible by following the rules about what you are allowed to take with you through the security check. Any sharp items (knives, scissors, tweezers, etc.) must be checked in with your baggage. Place all metal items (keys, coins, mobile telephones etc.) in your hand baggage or coat pocket, and send it all through the X-ray machine. Laptops and other larger electronic devices should be packed so that they are easy to remove for screening.

Shoes with metal details must be screened by the X-ray machine.

Small amounts of liquids are permitted through the security check and must be in containers no larger than 100 ml. All containers must be placed in a transparent plastic bag that may be opened and closed. The bag may not ­contain more than one litre when closed. Place the bag with containers on the ­conveyor belt for X-raying.

Lost property Items that are left onboard planes arriving at Oslo Airport, in the Terminal or onboard the Airport Express Train are ­delivered to the lost property department, which is located at the east end of the Arrival Hall.
