Cambodia Phnom Penh

06 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s bustling capital, sits at the junction of the Mekong and Tonlé Sap rivers. It was a hub for both the Khmer Empire and French colonialists. On its walkable riverfront, lined with parks, restaurants and bars, are the ornate Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda and the National Museum, displaying artifacts from around the country. At the city’s heart is the massive, art deco Central Market.

Traveling to Cambodia Flights from Abu Dhabi International Airport to Phnom Penh International Airport take around 11 to 16 hours (one stop) with Etihad Airways. Economy prices start from AED 3,621 per person. If you want to travel in style Business class will set you back around AED 11,365 with one stop.

Where To Dine In Phnom Penh Malis Restaurant When you dine at Malis Restaurant, not only do you get to savor delicious Cambodian cuisine, you also consume an important story. During the 1970’s under the Khmer Rouge, many of Cambodia’s traditional recipes that had been passed on for centuries were forgotten and vanished from the kitchen. Malis was born in 2004 out of the desire and passion to restore Cambodian cuisine to its former glory and put Cambodia back on the map as a culinary destination. Renowned for its fresh seasonal produce, delicate flavors and generous hospitality Master Chef Luu Meng and his team, decided to revive Cambodian cuisine from the past, adapt it to the present and preserve it for the future. Located in the heart of Phnom Penh, near the Independence Monument, guests can choose to dine in the outdoor courtyard or in air-conditioned comfort. The tables surround a beautiful tropical garden with flowering frangipanis and a trickling water feature beside a giant statue of Buddha, abiding by the principles of Feng Shui.

Topaz Restaurant Topaz is a haven of classic elegance and sophistication that allows diners to fully indulge their senses. The refined ambience is defined top-down by the attention to details including the nostalgic paintings and photographs on the walls. For more than 20 years, Topaz has been a landmark for French fine dining in the heart of Phnom Penh. The restaurant celebrates time-honored traditions and cutting-edge gastronomy in a stylish, contemporary setting that reflects the richly cultured, vibrant and dynamic capital city that it calls home. Hand selected ingredients, dedicated service, and the deepest pride in being among the best are at the heart of every dish. By sourcing their ingredients from the Marché Rungis in Paris and from individually selected suppliers across France and Cambodia, the team leave nothing to chance. Topaz restaurant strives to constantly create new events, highlighting talents with innovative and interesting perspectives on French cuisine. Many Michelin-starred chefs come to celebrate and to teach, because Topaz culinary team believe in the life-nourishing value of discovery. La Pergola Restaurant & Bar at The Plantation French tradition pairs with Khmer spices and herbs for an unforgettable culinary experience at La Pergola. Chef Olivier Guillon’s cuisine is full of color and passion, a visual feast with flavors balanced in perfect fusion. Seated above the Lotus Pond on an open-aired terrace, or in the comfort of an air-conditioned veranda, guests will be in for a treat when dining at La Pergola. June | 07

The Bel Cibo Restaurant From spectacular interior to an exquisite array of Italian cuisine, The Bel Cibo brings out the most ideal atmosphere for an amazing Italian dining experience. The restaurant is influenced by Tuscany and the northern regions of Italy. It serves prime cuts of meats, poultry, seafood, homemade pastas, home cured olives, marinated vegetables and mushrooms in virgin olive oil. The Bel Cibo Restaurant also offers homemade breads, delightful desserts and cheeses served with a selection of premium beverages. A classic Italian restaurant in Phnom Penh with excellent views of the river and city. Foreign Correspondence Club The FCC has been the meeting place for intrepid adventurers, locals and visitors from around the world for years. The FCC with its colonial setting is the perfect place to bring together spirited people for conversation. In the early days, Phnom Penh fell silent at sun down, and the choices of places to eat were just a handful. The FCC proved popular with foreign journalists and aid workers, who gathered

08 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

around the bar for a beverage and to swap tales. The FCC became the cornerstone of the capital’s river front district. The FCC Restaurant menu revels in traditional Asian flavors and Western favorites. The menu is built around FCC main-stays such as Fish and Chips and Wood-Fired Pizzas, Meaty Sandwiches and perfectly cooked Pastas. But Cambodian flavors are the highlight. Try the Fish Amok, Cambodia’s national dish, Beef Lok Lak, or By Char, to discover the intricacies of the authentic local cuisine. The Verdict Phnom Penh is as rich in history as it is cuisine. The locals are friendly and welcoming. Years of foreigners visiting the country has meant that everything is clearly sign posted, allowing you to get around the city with very little hassle. If you are looking for a city that can offer both fine dining and food stalls at a much cheaper price than other Asian destinations this could be the perfect choice for you. Iftar In The Sky If you’ve been following us on Instagram lately you would have seen that we have covered most of the Iftars in the city. However, this year we especially want to highlight Iftar In The Sky at The St. Regis Abu Dhabi. As we arrive at The St. Regis Abu Dhabi we are directed to a private elevator that takes us to the 52nd floor, the location of the world’s highest suspended suite, situated 220 meters up in the sky and our Iftar destination for this evening. We are warmly greeted by the team and shown to our table which has been elegantly set and decorated with Arabic fabrics and small lanterns. A selection of fresh mezzes consisting of Vine Leaves, Hummus, Fattoush, Tabbouleh and Moutabel, alongside Dates, Nuts and Apricots awaits us. We enjoy a few bites of the mezze and order our drinks from the Ramadan Fresh Beverage menu. Then we make our way to the soup options, we have a choice of Seafood Bisque or Lentil Soup, plus a wide variety of fresh breads. We select the Seafood Bisque, thick and rich in flavour this is the perfect start to our Iftar experience. Next, continuing the seafood theme we enjoy a selection of fresh seafood from Lobster, Oysters, Jumbo Prawns, Mussels to Crab. The seafood tastes delightful and we cannot resist going up for a second portion. The Jumbo Prawns are especially enjoyable, plump and juicy the seafood sauce further compliments the taste. Warm dishes vary from Chicken Biryani, Lamb with Prunes, Chicken Molokhia, Royal Mixed Seafood, Lobster, Arabic Mixed Grill, Sautéed Vegetables and Dawood Basha. Would you judge us if we told you we had the lobster again? It tasted so good that we were happy to enjoy it fresh or grilled. The highlight of our evening was the dessert room, an entire room dedicated to all the sweet treats you could possibly imagine, Strawberry Delight, Mud Cake, Chocolate Mousse, Asafiri, Shaabiyat, Passionfruit Mousse Cake, Green Tea Cake, Kunafa and Znoud El Sit are just a few of the desserts we sampled. Each dessert was wonderful. Our favourite was the Znoud El Sit, a crispy sweet pastry finger filled with a thick ashta cream. To conclude our Iftar we enjoy a freshly brewed Moroccan Tea made and served by one of the immaculately presented butlers. The butlers are instrumental in ensuring the service throughout the Iftar is perfect. The Abu Dhabi Suite promises a truly special affair for families and friends to enjoy. An extensive Iftar array of exquisite, traditional Arabian delicacies, a dedicated dessert room and Ramadan beverages served by the welcoming St. Regis culinary team awaits each and every guest. The Abu Dhabi Suite seats 50 guests per Iftar, allowing guests to enjoy a relaxed dining experience. Iftar In The Sky is priced at AED 320 per person and is available on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from sunset to 10.00pm, throughout Ramadan. Guests can book individually or for private Iftar gatherings of between 35 to 70 guests. Daycation at Marriott Hotel Al Forsan, Abu Dhabi

Marriott Hotel Al Forsan, Abu Dhabi has put together a wonderful selection of offers this Ramadan. Today we are visiting the hotel to experience their spa and Iftar offerings. We begin our day by visiting the tranquil Saray Spa. Saray Spa offers guests a wide variety of treatments from massages, facials, body scrubs to therapy baths. The Saray Spa Ramadan special gives guests the opportunity to enjoy a 60-minute massage of their choice and a 30 minute express moisturizing facial, all for just AED 440 per person. We select the aromatherapy massage as it promises to leave us relaxed and de-stressed. As we enter the treatment room the lights dim and soft tunes start to play, setting a calming mood. We have a brief consultation with the therapist, discussing areas we wish for them to avoid or focus on and answer a few questions about our medical history. After our discussion we move onto the massage. The massage treatment is exceptional. The therapist performs professionally, kneading away our aches and pains. Next is the 30-minuite express facial. Our therapist cleanses our skin, lightly exfoliates, gently massages and finishes off by applying moisturiser. Afterwards our skin feels clean and hydrated. Guests wishing to make use of the facilities are also able to do so either before or after their treatment. Next we head over to Khayal for Iftar. Khayal is the hotels all day dining restaurant. Boasting natural light and open space, Khayal offers a wide variety of Arabic and International cuisine. To start we enjoy a wholesome Lentil Soup from the Arabic section, along with Fattoush, Smoked Salmon, Hummus and a few portions of Cheese Sambusak. From the Indian station we enjoy Grilled Lamb beautifully marinated, it offers a mmm in every bite. Later we make our way to the Asian section to try the Chicken Hakka Noodles, Spring Rolls and Dim Sum.

18 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

The Asian selection is our favorite, the culinary team have perfectly crafted each dish. Whatever you do, do not miss the dessert options, Khayal boasts the widest variety of Turkish Delights in the city. If this isn’t for you don’t worry Khayal has a wide selection of Baklava, Ice-Creams, unique Kunafas as well as other traditional Arabic desserts. Sacci

20 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Located at the Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa, Sacci has its own separate entrance from that of the hotel, giving the restaurant a sense of exclusivity. Guests can choose to dine outdoors on the tranquil patio, surrounded by lush greenery or indoors amongst the restaurants contemporary decor, which resembles that of a grand Tuscan villa. The menu is condensed yet appealing, it features all the classic Italian dishes one would expect, from pizza, pasta to gelato. As we flick through the menu the team confidently describe each dish and make recommendations. For starters we select the Burrata and the Bruschetta. These are the bestselling appetizers so naturally we are intrigued to try these for ourselves. The Bruschetta is a traditional Tomato Bruschetta with Fresh Basil and Garlic Oil. The Burrata is served with Candied Lemon, Basil Oil, Heirloom Tomato Salad and Toasted Almonds. The Burrata originates from Gioia del Colle. Gioia del Colle is a little town in the heart of Puglia and has been named ‘The Burrata Town’. The origins of Burrata in Gioia del Colle date back to 16th century, when the production of this cheese began in manor houses. The Burrata, as expected, is sensational, our knife glides through the thick outer layer unveiling a delectable soft inner cheese. The medley of tomatoes offers a feast for the eyes as it does the senses. The slight zest of lemon is an unusual but welcomed surprise. The Bruschetta in all its simplicity tastes delicious, the fresh plump tomatoes balances the strong garlic flavours. Moving onto the mains we both opt for pasta dishes. I select the Spinach and Ricotta Ravioli with Wild Mix Mushrooms and Black Truffle whilst my dining companion selects the House Made Tagliatelle with Veal and Beef Ragout Bolognese style. The Ravioli offers a journey of flavours and textures from creamy ricotta to wild mushrooms, through to aromatic truffles.

The Tagliatelle is a refreshing twist on the regular Spaghetti Bolognese and makes for a flavoursome alternative. Portions are generous, true traditional Italian style. Creating all these superb dishes is Chef Giuseppe Sparagna. Originally from Rome, he welcomes all his guests with homemade Italian food with a modern touch. Chef insists we try his signature dish, the Home Made Fagottini Pasta filled with Seafood, Fresh Tomato Sauce, Pine Seeds, Taggiasche Black Olive and Fennel Scent. Upon our first bite it is evident to see why this is one of Chef’s signature dishes, rich, fragrant and toothsome. Teatro

Located at Park Rotana, Teatro is easily identifiable by the big red Teatro lettering outside the restaurant. Teatro’s theme is theatre, red curtains and theatre masks decorate the walls, whilst the actual theatre itself is played out through the cuisine. As we enter Teatro we walk past the large open bar, the restaurant is intimately lit, with hanging chandeliers adding a sense of glamour. It feels like a dining room converted from London’s famous West End. Teatro expertly executes a vast menu that focuses on Asian and Italian specialties. Catering to their global clientele this offering of cuisine has worked well to establish Teatro as a firm favourite in the city. Italian cuisine ranges from, Wood-Oven Pizza, Pasta to Risotto, whilst the Asian cuisine ranges from Sushi, Dim Sum to Stir-Fry. Other notable dishes include Western specialities such as Grilled Corn-Fed Chicken, Nori Seaweed Salmon and Australian Lamb Loin, plus traditional Indian flavours like Butter Chicken, Chicken Tikka and Goan King Fish Curry. We begin with complimentary Prawn Crackers, a pleasant introduction as we have selected our dishes from the Asian menu. First to arrive is the Yellow Tail Tartar followed by the Crab Cakes and the Som Thom. The Crab Cakes are served as three large plump piping hot cakes. As we bite into the Crab Cakes we notice the generous flakes of thick crab meat. Next, we move onto the Yellow Tail Tartar in Crispy Gyoza Shells, Tom Yam Marinade, with Guacamole. This is our favourite dish, presented taco style the flavours work in perfect harmony. Our final starter is the Som Thom, Bangkok Green Papaya Salad, light and fresh this classic Asian dish does not disappoint. Having noticed the open sushi counter on the way in, we decide to try an array of sushi for our mains, we select the California Maki, Ebi Tempura Maki, Spider Roll and Fantasy Roll. All the sushi is made fresh upon ordering, this is evident when tasting the sushi. The California Maki, a classic amongst sushi enthusiasts tastes delicious and would easily rival most in the city. 24 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

The Spider Roll consists of Tempura Soft Shell Crab, Avocado and Spicy Mayo, this along with the Fantasy Roll made with Unagi, Crabstick, Avocado, Tanuki and Teriyaki sauce are our favourites. The Ebi Tempura Maki is also tasty, made with Fried Shrimp and Sesame Seeds it offers simpler flavours. All the sushi was fresh and flavourful, we sampled just a small range of what Teatro has to offer. As we finish our mains the waitress returns with the dessert menu. As tempted as we are to try ‘The Big Show’, a dessert famed for its theatrical opulence we just about manage a few pieces of Mochi, traditional Japanese ice-cream. Admittedly before visiting Teatro I was a bit sceptical if a restaurant with such a large menu would be able to deliver high quality cuisine however where many other restaurants have failed Teatro has excelled and in doing so it has created a unique offering for diners. The St. Regis Abu Dhabi

Afternoon Tea

Today we are visiting the enchanting St. Regis Abu Dhabi to indulge in their delightful Afternoon Tea. The St. Regis has a long-standing history with the tradition of Afternoon Tea. In the 19th century, Lady Caroline Astor, mother of St. Regis founder John Jacob Astor IV would invite her friends for Afternoon Tea. Referred to as “The” Mrs. Astor, the undisputed Grande Dame, she ruled New York high society, and her Afternoon Tea was said to be extraordinary. At The St. Regis Abu Dhabi guests have a choice of three types of Afternoon Tea, Classic Afternoon Tea, Berry Afternoon Tea or the Signature St. Regis Afternoon Tea. The Classic Afternoon Tea features all the traditional favourites, such as Cucumber and Cream Sandwiches, Homemade Scones and Pastries. The Berry Afternoon Tea is unique, the savoury and sweet options are infused by various berries. Guests can enjoy Grilled Goats Cheese and Strawberry on a Brioche Bun, Roasted Blueberry, Avocado and Mozzarella and Mini Berry Cheesecake to name a few. However, we cannot resist the Signature St. Regis Afternoon Tea, Scottish Smoked Salmon Sandwich, Truffle Egg Mousse Sandwich, Homemade Scones and Macaroons prove too tempting. We place our order for the Signature St. Regis Afternoon Tea and keenly await its arrival. The Afternoon Tea ritual begins by us selecting a tea of our choice. The Tea Sommelier presents a tea trolley before us, which features a wide selection of teas. After much discussion we opt for the Lemon and Ginger Tea. Shorty after our Afternoon Tea is presented. First to be served are the savouries, at the bottom of the three-tier curate stand are six sandwiches. These comprise of Scottish Smoked Salmon, Truffle Egg Mousse, Halloumi Cheese, Free Range Chicken, Cucumber and Cream and Tomato and Mozzarella. Our favourite is the Truffle Egg Mousse, Free Range Egg with Truffle Oil on a Brioche Bun. The Mousse is rich, thick and creamy and works perfectly when paired with the soft Brioche Bun. Equally as appetizing is the Scottish Smoked Salmon served on Squid Ink Bread with Horseradish, Capers and Salmon Roe. On the second tier we have a selection of seven mini pastries from Battenberg to Blueberry Panna Cotta Tart, each is as enjoyable as the next. However, the final top tier holds our favourite item, Homemade Scones. We smother the warm freshly baked scones unapologetically with layer upon layer of Strawberry Jam and Clotted Cream. They taste exceptional, we are thrilled to see that The St. Regis Abu Dhabi has gone to the effort of sourcing authentic Clotted Cream. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our Afternoon Tea experience at The St. Regis Abu Dhabi. Small touches like the Clotted Cream and the Tea Sommelier make this Afternoon Tea one that “The” Mrs. Astor would have been pleased to host. If you are looking for a delightful Afternoon Tea set in plush surroundings with excellent five-star service, then we would recommend The St. Regis Abu Dhabi. Afternoon Tea is served daily from 2.00pm to 6.00pm. Classic Afternoon Tea AED 120 per person or AED 220 with a glass of bubbly. Berry Afternoon Tea AED 160 per person or AED 260 with a glass of bubbly. Signature St. Regis Afternoon Tea AED 195 per person or AED 295 with a glass of bubbly. Noche, located at Hilton Capital Grand is a trendy chill-out lounge that attracts a dynamic crowd. Serving a variety of International cuisine with a focus on South American and modern Arabic dishes, Noche has become a great go-to place for a laid-back weekend escape, without having to leave the city. The al fresco lounge area, a spacious terrace overlooking the pool, is perfect for relaxing with friends over drinks or indulging in late night bites. Whether you are looking to enjoy daily live sports games or sit back and relax by the pool in one of the private gazebos, Noche is a great option.

The carnivores amongst you will enjoy the Lamb Rack with Mushroom Quinotto another dish from Brazil. This generous portion will ensure that you leave Noche anything but hungry. Next our palates journey to Peru as we sample the Tiradito Fish and Salpicon Shot. Tiradito is the perfect marriage between the Peruvian ceviche and the Japanese sashimi. Thinly sliced fish is topped with avocados, onions, cucumber and spices. Served on the side is the spicy citrus infusion, allowing us to add as much or as little as we desire. The difference guests will notice from the more popular ceviche that is found in the city is that tiradito is cut differently, thinly sliced as opposed to ceviche.

Guests will be pleased to hear that Noche is revamping its menu and adding a selection of mouth-watering dishes. We were lucky enough to Ending on a sweet note, let us introduce to you the Choco Fruitilo and Toffee a Colombian-Venezuelan dish.
