DINING

NIGHTLIFE

The Meat Co Located in the Souk Qaryat Al Beri you will find one of Abu Dhabi’s most renowned steakhouses, The Meat Co. Occupying two floors, The Meat Co features natural materials and earth like tones. Downstairs guests can enjoy the cozy ambience or the vibrant outdoor terrace, with views spanning far across the canal. Upstairs guests can take in the beautiful décor and a bird’s eye view of the scenery below. After much debate about whether to sit inside or outside we finally decide to sit inside but upstairs so we can still enjoy the view. We take a seat next to the large window and begin to look through the menu. For entrees I opt for the Red Chilli Prawns, a house favorite for over a decade. Succulent Gulf prawns are pan-fried with garlic, ginger, red chilli, lemongrass and cream and is served with jasmine rice. The prawns are exquisite, the garlic and lemongrass add a multitude of flavors. The portion is very generous. My dining partner selects the Lobster and Crab Salad, marinated fresh crab and lobster meat, avocado, tomato and cucumber salsa. This dish is light, fresh and bursting with flavor. For mains, steak, of course. From the connoisseur’s choice I select the Japanese Ohmi A5 Wagyu Sirloin 250g, which boasts a marble score of 10+. Served with wasabi butter, ponzu sauce and grilled enoki mushrooms. The marbling is fantastic, the rich marble melts in my mouth and creates a rich creamy taste, a delight for my taste buds. For side dishes I select the baked potato and steamed seasonal

vegetables. My dining partner opts for the Blackmore Fillet 200g, marble score 7+. This steak is thick and chunky. For the side dishes, grilled asparagus and baked potato. Both steaks were served with BBQ relish. The sides are also enjoyable, lightly tossed in butter and ideal for sharing. Now, time for dessert. Admittedly we are hardly able to eat another bite, but having no self-control when it comes to dessert we select The Meat Co Sharing Platter for two. This option offers a selection of 5 mini desserts. From Nutella cheesecake, apple pie, strawberry ice-cream, malva pudding, to our favorite crème brûlée. Our evening concludes with a traditional South African song and dance, a nice touch to a pleasurable dining experience at The Meat Co. The service throughout our entire dining experience was relaxed and friendly. Leveraging from its African heritage The Meat Co offers prime cuts and a wide selection of grape paired with a relaxed ambiance, this has ensured that Meat Co has and will remain a firm competitor amongst Abu Dhabi steakhouses. Zaya Nurai Island

Situated in the turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf, hidden from the hustle and bustle of the city you will find a small picturesque island called Zaya Nurai Island. Getting to Zaya Nurai Island couldn’t be easier. Located in Saadiyat opposite the residential developments guests will find the Welcome Center. Here guests can enjoy a selection of beverages in a chic setting whilst they wait for the boat to depart and transport them to Zaya Nurai Island. We start our experience with a 12-minute boat ride to Zaya Nurai Island from the mainland at Saadiyat. The boat ride offers amazing sea views spanning across the Arabian Gulf and in some areas you can even see the bottom of the ocean. We arrive at the dock feeling like we’ve just stepped out of a James Bond movie. The team are on hand to welcome arriving guests and escort them to their desired locations. Today we are visiting Zaya Nurai Island to try their Friday brunch which is held in their Frangipani outlet. The décor at Frangipani is stunning, washed out floors, grey walls and delicate lighting features set the tone for a refined Friday brunch. Guests do have the option to enjoy Frangipani’s large terrace however we decide to sit indoors. The brunch offers a selection of fresh salads, BBQ grills and tempting desserts. To start we select a mix of fresh salads including the Surimi Salad, Hawaiian Salad, Beetroot Salad, Pomelo Salad along with the Smoked Salmon and Asparagus and the Assorted Bagel Sandwiches. A great start, the salads are fresh and appetizing. Next, we decide to try the King Crab Legs and Pink Shrimp from the fresh seafood selection. Also on offer is a range of sushi which seems to be proving very popular with guests. Before moving onto the BBQ grills we cannot resist trying the freshly made Guacamole with chips from the Mexican station, we are so glad we did, it tastes delightful. We move onto the BBQ grills. 16 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

A wide selection of grills are available but do not miss the lamb chops, we are surprised how chef has managed to keep them so tender. Finally, dessert, the dessert counter is made up of small sweet treats, immediately our attention is drawn to the white chocolate and pistachio éclair. It tastes phenomenal, so much so that we help ourselves to a couple more. For those that do not have a sweet tooth the brunch also has a variety of cheese on display ranging from, Taleggio, Adam to Goat cheese. Once you’ve finished enjoying a tasteful brunch, you are invited to relax at the beach or pool. The resident DJ plays a selection of tunes to help you relax and see in the weekend in style. We felt that the brunch offered a wide variety of cuisine without being ostentatious. Our only criticism would be that the staff do need to pay slightly more attention to when dishes are piling up on guests tables a few times guests and ourselves included had to ask them to remove our empty plates. Overall, Zaya Nurai Island is luxurious, secluded, blissful and elegant, we can see why it’s a popular destination for residents and tourists alike. The best part, it’s only a 12-minute boat ride from Saadiyat. Friday brunch is served 12.30pm to 4.00pm and includes transfers to and from Zaya Nurai Island via boat, plus pool and beach access. AED 550* with soft drinks AED 650* with house beverages AED 750* with French bubbles Little ones under 4 years eat for free. Kids from 4 years to 12 years get 50% discount. Fairmont Fujairah Beach Resort

Fairmont Fujairah Beach Resort This month we explore Fujairah’s only art-inspired resort, an idyllic hotel nestled amongst the valleys of the Al Hajar Mountains, along the coast of Dibba. From the moment you enter the hotel you are in awe of the stunning décor, surrounded by the natural beauty of ocean and mountains, this is a getaway like no other. A showcase of art from around the globe and the resort’s interior design is a juxtaposition of modern bohemian meets art-deco, infused with arabesque touches. Fairmont Fujairah Beach Resort is only a 45-minute drive from the Ras Al Khaimah International Airport and a 3.5 hour drive from Abu Dhabi, for those of you looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city this is an ideal option. The resort offers a wide range of recreational activities like hiking, watersports, aquatic adventures, spa indulgences or just simply pool and beach lounging. The landscaped lawns and the great outdoors are the perfect setting for events. The resort’s artistic décor is also seen in the dining experiences, with a selection of restaurants offering a range of cuisines, fresh seafood from Dibba Bay to Italian and poolside lounges. The exterior of the hotel is inspired by Moroccan pink buildings, unassuming and simple, giving away little of the luxury that lies inside. As we reach the hotel, the staff are warm and welcoming, from the valet to the reception. We are led to our room which has an ocean view and a delicious welcome platter for our arrival. Light and airy macarons, indulgent chocolates and a delectable ‘Edible Garden’ with vegetables and dip. This is in preparation of the wonderful dinner that awaits us in the evening.

The décor of the room is in keeping with the gorgeous hotel, small arabesque lamps placed inside spaces in the wall stir the imagination to that of a traditional souk. The bathroom includes a shower area and tub, along with customized toiletries from Le Labo Fragrances New York, ensuring the continuous luxury on every front.

The resort offers a pool overlooking the bay and a stunning sunrise view for the early risers. With a range of water-sports available at the resort’s private beach, you can enjoy a great getaway without ever having to leave the hotel! The Copper Lobster1 We start our culinary journey with a delightful dinner at The Copper Lobster, which sources most of the seafood it serves locally, from Dibba Bay, even consulting with local seafood experts and fishermen for their daily produce. Chef Georgiy, who has previously trained at a 3 Michelin Starred restaurant in Italy, has created a stunning menu with local produce and great flavors. We start off with the Ceviche With A Twist, squid ink tapioca crackers and drops of passion fruit sauce, a delicious mix of citrus with a hint of sweetness and crunchy crackers. We then try the hot and cold appetizer, another one of the Chef’s creations - Fried Shrimp On A Bed Of Tuna Tartar, a must-try when visiting. The main course is Moroccan inspired, fused with seafood flavors to produce a simple yet delicious dish. Couscous with prawns, cuttlefish and other seafood, served in a tagine. We end on a sweet note with a Lemon Mousse Stuffed Cannoli, with a side of raspberry sorbet and cherry cream. A great evening while listening to the distant sounds of the sea and live music for the night, The Copper Lobster is a must-visit restaurant, even possibly worth a drive just for the food. The fresh seafood and delectable flavors of the menu are mesmerizing and will keep you wanting to go back for more. Canvas As we enter through the iron-wrought gates into the all-day-dining restaurant for breakfast the next day, we discover more influences of the arabesque décor in a light and airy space with live cooking stations and a great buffet selection. Offering a selection of eats all day long, Canvas also hosts a new ‘Dupper’ concept every Thursday evening. The party starts at 7:30pm and goes late into the night, with a range of live cooking stations, fun beats, free-flowing beverages and a great vibe for all those looking for a fun-night out, starting at only AED 185.

Cafe Pronto An open and airy European style bistro offering delectable Italian eats, our lunch at Cafe Pronto is a refreshing one. We start with the baguette topped with burrata cheese, tomatoes, onions and fried leek - A great start to the meal. We then try the Prawn Linguine, another Italian dish with seafood inspiration, a great mix of local and international ingredients. Well-seasoned, simple yet delicious, the linguine is a must-order. Next up is the Seafood Risotto, followed by the Slow Cooked Braised Beef Ribs served with mash potato - A fantastic main course. We end on a high note with Tiramisu in a jar, a light, fluffy, airy and creamy tiramisu with subtle coffee flavors. The service is efficient and attentive. Arteasan Framed archways and marble inlays create pathways to an intimately sized salon, offering light bites through the day and a pleasant afternoon tea with delectable desserts. You can spend a relaxing afternoon while enjoying the art and sipping on Jing tea concoctions, curated in house by the restaurant manager including refreshing mixes such as the dry fruit tea, rosebuds and ceylon. IAMMAI - Pool Lounge Inspired by the Arabic word for water, IAMMAI pool lounge is our dinner venue with great views of the bay, alongside a beautifully lit pool. They serve light bites through the day as well as hubbly-bubbly from sunset. We start with the Arabic mezze platter, with light falafels, kibbeh and spinach fatayer. Our mains include the mouth-watering lamb sliders with harissa, served with a side of chips. A classic favorite, highly recommended by the chef, is the lobster roll made with local catch, another great use of the local produce. The sticky toffee pudding is truly a sweet ending to a relaxed, leisurely dinner. Although the restaurant does not open until later, the early risers can visit the poolside for a gorgeous view of the sunrise every morning.

Brunch at Safina

The scene is set, ocean and pool views, funky beats and the smell of meat grilling on the BBQ all playing their part in luring guests to Safina. Situated in the picturesque Saadiyat Beach Club, Safina is our brunch destination for today. As we enter Safina the place is already packed, luckily, we’ve made a reservation, otherwise we would have struggled to find a table. Guests can dine indoors or outdoors on the sun shaded terrace. Today we are dining outdoors as the weather is perfect plus with the magnificent views how could we resist! Safina’s vibrant brunch offers guests a selection of live BBQ grills, fresh seafood, Asian specialties, a pasta station, live tartar station, an oyster bar, a cheese bar and an array of tasty desserts to name a few. The queue for the BBQ grills is extensive so we decide to start at the live tartar station. Chef gives us a choice of salmon or beef, we choose salmon. Made freshly before us we enjoy this bespoke experience. We select a few oysters and head back to our table. Next the Asian section, being a big fan of Asian food, I cannot resist the dim sum with a side of sweet chilli sauce, delicious. After this we decide to go back to the BBQ grills, the queue is still long but we decide to wait, we conclude that if everyone else is waiting it must be good. Finally, its our turn, we select the grilled chicken and the grilled shrimp. With our first bite we can see why the queue was so long. Other dishes on offer include watermelon feta cheese with mint, prawn cocktail, cream of mushroom soup, tuna nicoise, Thai fish 30 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

curry, baked potatoes, mussels gratin, lamb chops and corn on the cob. The dessert station is the main focal point and offers a wide variety of scrumptious treats including mango cheese cake, chocolate mousse, mix berry crumble, blueberry cremaux and chocolate fountain. However, it’s the cheese counter that catches our eye, emmental, camembert, blue, pecorino and smoked scamorza cheese are all enjoyed with a few crackers. Whilst the brunch offerings at Safina are limited in comparison to other brunches in the city it does still offer a wide selection given the size of the venue. Queueing at the more popular stations can be a bit tiresome, however there are plenty of other stations to enjoy whilst you wait. If you are looking for good vibes and an upbeat atmosphere check out Safina’s Friday brunch, from 1.00pm to 4.00pm. Catching Up With Thomas Keller

Thomas Keller is a well-known name in the culinary industry, starting from humble beginnings in his mother’s kitchen to running two successful 3 Michelin Starred restaurants in USA, Per Se and The French Laundry. He is renowned for his culinary skills and exceptionally high standards. Keller opened Bouchon Bakery in New York’s iconic Rockefeller Center in 2011 and went on to successfully open 3 more branches across the US. Fine dining lovers will be devastated to hear that Chef Keller is not bringing anything like Per Se or French Laundry to the UAE but with the launch of Bouchon Bakery at the Walk in JBR, offering quick eats, baked goods and classic desserts, the Thomas Keller brand is here. What’s your favourite dish at your restaurants and what is the story behind creating it? The Poulet Rôti at Bouchon. It’s comforting and simple in preparation but incredibly satisfying with its aromas and textures. Roasting a chicken is something that crosses economic, social and geographic boundaries I think being able to roast a chicken really well is something that will serve you for a long time. A beautifully roasted chicken has always resonated with me; that, with a simple salad, a chocolate tart for dessert and a great espresso. That’s a perfect meal. What is your favourite chef and restaurant? It is my belief that the best chefs are the ones who came before us: the innovators and influencers who inspired a generation of chefs and whose experience and expertise paved the way for the most refined and advanced culinary era in history -- that first generation of acclaimed French chefs in America, from the 1960s and 1970s: Chefs 32 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

André Soltner, Jean-Yves Piquet, Michel Richard, Jacques Pépin, Alain Sailhac, Jean-Jacques Rachou, Georges Perrier, Christian Delouvrier. This is the community that ignited the culinary movement in America and inspired so many chefs like myself. Their genius made today’s novel kitchen arts possible and elevated the status of cooking, in the eyes of Americans, from a mere job to a prestigious profession. Without them, nothing would have been possible. What other passions do you have apart from cooking? I am an avid golfer and often play in charity tournaments where we can raise money for causes that are important to me. Like the Ment’or Foundation which provides continuing educational opportunities for culinary professionals through a grant program and selects and trains the most promising young American chefs to represent the Bocuse d’Or Team USA at the world’s most prestigious culinary competition. As established chefs, it is our responsibility to develop and foster programs that promote mentorship and shared experiences which elevate and influence the next generation of chefs in the United States. What is your first interaction with baking/ cooking? I started cooking in 1974, working for my mother in a small restaurant in south Florida. While my mother was managing, my older brother Joseph helped teach me in the kitchen; he had a big impact on my life. He was a cook at a very young age and when I become interested in cooking, he taught me a great deal. He actually taught me how to make hollandaise sauce. For anyone who has ever read the French Laundry Cookbook, there’s that great story in there about the importance of hollandaise and that was all

about my brother. My mother was a single parent who worked tirelessly to support six children. She did that by running a restaurant. Many days or many nights I found myself in that restaurant watching her work and her example of determination. The commitment is one that was a strong example for me and one that I try to follow. What are your views on molecular gastronomy and what kind of food do you think diners are moving towards? Molecular gastronomy certainly has a place and I am always excited about whatever chefs are doing. For me, it’s all about ingredients and execution. That’s the equation for good cooking and what guests have come to expect from our restaurants and bakeries. And consistency is key. Ultimately, we have to go in every day and cook. What’s important is that my team is going to come in and do the same thing they did yesterday and they have to be comfortable with that. The important thing is not that we’re trying to do something new but that we’re trying to do something with integrity, benefitting ourselves and nurturing others. Chef Roland Henin was my mentor and it was he who set me on my career path. He told me that all cooks cook to nurture people and that really resonated with me. It’s why I became a chef. To give others something that is good for them and makes them happy, that’s the base of a chef’s emotional connection to his guests. That’s what I am drawn to. Set within The Beach, Jumeirah Beach Residence, Dubai, Bouchon Bakery is now open from 8.00am to 11.00pm weekdays and 8.00am to 12.00am on weekends. Bouchon Bakery, JBR, Dubai, 04 419 0772

Prego’s

Prego’s at Beach Rotana has introduced its highly anticipated new menu. The new menu has been carefully designed to express the ‘a la nonna’, grandmother style of Italian cuisine. We were invited to Prego’s to sample a few dishes from the new menu. We are taken to a table outside on the decking, a small stream flowed in the background and the tables were dimly lit. It was the perfect setting for a great evening. To start the Fritto Misto, crispy fried, shrimp, calamari, seabass, cod and vegetables served with two dips. Perfectly crisp each bite offered a sensational variation in taste. Next one of my favourites, the Arancini di Riso ai Funghi, risotto dumpling with mozzarella, fontina peas and mushrooms on salsa di Pomodoro. Being of Mediterranean decent myself this dish in particular brought back many fond memories. In traditional Mediterranean cooking pluses such as peas, lentils and beans always play a significant role in the kitchen. It was good to see that chef was really embracing the ‘a la nonna’ style of Italian cooking. Not to be missed is the Char-Grilled Octopus, potato salad, olives and capers with citrus aioli. We’ve been saying for months how we just love octopus and it looks like restaurants have started to take note as this dish is becoming a firm contender on menus throughout Abu Dhabi. Next the Pizza Bresaola e Rucola, air-cured beef, tomato and parmigiano-reggiano shavings. The pizza was enjoyable although the base was slightly thicker than we prefer. However, the Fettuccine alla Bolognese, traditional fettuccine with bolognese sauce did not disappoint. The pasta was cooked to perfection and the bolognese sauce was chunky and aromatic.

34 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Two other dishes that are worth travelling to Prego’s for are the Sea Bass alla Toscana, oven-roasted on cannellini beans with rosemary, broccoli and peperonata and the Herb-Roasted Breast of Chicken, fregola with pan drippings, peas, mint and ricotta. Finally, a menu that embraces ricotta, another ingredient that is used widely in the Mediterranean but hardly found on menus outside the pasta dishes. Given that the portions at Prego’s have also followed the ‘a la nonna’ theme and are extremely generous we feel its only fair that we advise you to leave room for dessert. You’ll thank us later. The desserts are amazing, we did sample a few more than we care to admit but when you are faced with choices like, Tiramisu, Hazelnut Crunch with Nutella Cream, Maria’s Italian Orange and Pistachio Tart, Chocolate and Rosemary Frittelle and Mini Cannoli can you blame us? What surprised us the most was Maria’s Italian Orange and Pistachio Tart it tasted sensational. Fritto Misto AED 93 Arancini di Riso ai Funghi AED 72 Char-Grilled Octopus AED 72 Pizza Bresaola e Rucola AED 85 Fettuccine alla Bolognese AED 82 Sea Bass alla Toscana AED 155 Herb-Roasted Breast of Chicken AED 130 Tiramisu AED 45 Prego’s, Beach Rotana, 02 697 9011 Prices are subject to 10% service charge, 6% tourism fee and 4% municipality fee.

Last month we mentioned that Filini Garden had arrived at Radisson Blu Hotel, Abu Dhabi, Yas Island. This month we headed over to Filini Garden to try it for ourselves. We enter through the passageway of lush greenery. It feels like we have been transported to an opulent Italian vineyard. The small steps lead to an opening which unveils the lower deck of Filini Garden, here guests have a selection of seating options and the perfect spot to watch the sunset. The upper deck has larger tables, ideal for groups and a bar area. Guests can enjoy a selection of cicchetti, delectable small plates of food. We try the Fritto Misto, fried prawns, whitebait and calamari, Tonno Crudo, sashimi grade tuna, crab and orange salad and the Salmon Tartar, along with a few select beverages from the menu. The cicchetti are delightful, the whitebait is our favorite, it is cooked to perfection. Worth mentioning are the beverages, which have been inspired by famous fashion designers, a fun twist. For our mains we decide to move inside the restaurant. The menu here features a selection of pizza, pasta, seafood and traditional Italian favorites. I select the Chargrilled Tuscan-Style Fillet Beef in green peppercorn sauce whilst my dining companion opts for the Crab Ravioli. After ordering we wait for 45 minutes for our food to arrive, slightly longer than we had anticipated. Like any new opening you will experience these small teething problems that are easily rectified. However, when the food does arrive we do enjoy our dishes. Overall Filini Garden is great for a few drinks and a light bite, we recommend arriving just before sunset so you can enjoy the scenery.
