“The team at Aloft Al Ain have embraced the true meaning of hospitality” Room As we enter the room we instantly notice the fresh and funky décor, plush platform beds, bright, vibrant colors and minimalist interiors. Two large windows offer plenty of natural light, giving the room a fresh upbeat feel and we absolutely love the pixel design on the pillows. The WiFi is fast and free, a refreshing change from most hotels. The room has a 49-inch LCD TV with a decent number of channels. Tea and coffee making facilities are available, in hip aloft branded cups. The hotel offers 24-hour room service and the menu is huge, extra points for this. Also, worth mentioning is the air conditioning, the room has an open plan design so we were slightly concerned if it was going to be cool enough, but it did not disappoint.

For mains, we order the salmon teriyaki with scented jasmine rice, kimchee, shrimp cracker crust, scallions and golden garlic along with the 10oz Australian grass fed beef, with mash potatoes, vegetables and béarnaise sauce. Koi An international leader in contemporary Japanese cuisine, Koi has spread from LA’s West Hollywood district to Abu Dhabi. The restaurant is perfect in keeping with its Saadiyat Island location and can be found tucked away in The Collection, an upmarket dining enclave set against the picturesque backdrop of natural sand dunes and palm fringed beaches. Koi has fast been gaining a reputation on the Abu Dhabi dining scene for their Saturday ‘Gochiso’ Brunch but it was the a la carte options that became the reason for our visit. On a Tuesday night when the rest of the city appears to be sleeping, Koi is abuzz with groups of young twenty-somethings enjoying the lounge with its chilled ambiance. The restaurant space is anchored around a central sushi counter that proves to be a hub of activity throughout our meal, as the chefs work with tireless precision to create dishes of impeccable quality. The ambiance is one of subdued candlelight, punctuated by textured walls, lush foliage and the hypnotizing brush strokes of Japanese calligraphy. Boasting an intimacy unlike anywhere else in the capital, the seating is well-spaced and clustered around pockets of darkness which help to add to the atmosphere. We indulge in a selection of maki rolls that includes shrimp tempura, eel and avocado, and spicy tuna, though it was the slightly spicy dragon roll of shrimp tempura, eel and baked crab that proved to be a textural marvel. Aside from the sushi, Koi’s menu takes diners on an expansive journey through the very best of Japanese cuisine. The selection includes the usual favorites (miso black cod, lobster tempura) and several unique items that you’re unlikely to find at many other places in the capital, such as a seaweed medley or the sea urchin sashimi.

The only weakness comes from the lobster tacos which although light, are surprisingly lacking in flavor, unless consumed with the yuzu guacamole. Main courses run the usual gauntlet of sautéd tiger prawns and homemade tofu but it’s the grilled seabass and braised short ribs that pique our interest. The short rib dish is unbelievably tender and is injected with a startling heat from the wasabi risotto, working to complement the meat with its creamy texture. The seabass is beautifully delicate, coated in a sweet honey-balsamic glaze, floating in the middle of a shisho-pea coulis. Sides come at an additional cost. Desserts keep the Japanese focus with a yuzu passionfruit trifle, mochi and coconut tapioca available, yet it was the sticky toffee pudding with coconut ice cream that got our vote. Soft and comforting, the coconut ice cream provided to cut though the sweetness of the warm toffee sauce. Koi’s positioning as one of the premier Japanese restaurants in Abu Dhabi has provided them with a loyal clientele, who come for the unique hybrid of lounge and restaurant. With sufficient service (albeit a little slow at times) and upbeat music at just the right volume, so as not to stifle conversation. The outside terrace would be our preference but with the thermometer averaging around forty degrees at the moment, it will have to wait until winter. Ultimately Koi is a winner and with its distinct blend of traditionalism and contemporary it provides a terrific addition to the dining landscape of Saadiyat. Azza Explores Mezzaluna, Emirates Palace For this month’s feature the team at Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi invited me to review Mezzaluna located in the stunning Emirates Palace. Designed to conjure the grand tradition of trattorias throughout Northern Italy with their tree-lined roads, undulating hills and sun-kissed fields. Mezzaluna was my destination and I was looking forward to my dining experience that is consummately Italian. Mezzaluna serves hand-crafted, regional Italian specialties, with a wide selection of cuisines from paccheri pasta with lobster, langoustine and asparagus, stuffed baked lamb loin with cerignola olives, pizza margherita and even special dishes, such as gluten free pasta. Dishes here are designed to suit every palate. You can dine al fresco on Mezzaluna’s expertly designed terrace and indulge in inspired dishes. The menu is rife with the finest ingredients sourced throughout Italy, from seafood and artichokes from Sardinia, blood orange and fine sea salt from Sicily, olives and olive oil from Liguria, all complemented by glorious views of the picture-perfect sandy beach, crystal blue waters of the Arabian Gulf and the Emirates Palace Marina. Mezzaluna has the wow factor, from the moment you walk through the doors, the interior of the restaurant and the vibe feels so authentic, which I love. The staff are friendly and attentive, the scene is set to discover true Italian cuisine. For my drink selection, I order the bestselling drink which is the Moskito, it consists of, lime, mint, brown sugar and ginger ale, it is very refreshing and tasty. For my starter, I opt for the antipasto misto, perfect for two people as it is served sharing style. This platter is just divine and flavorsome. The platter consisted of vitello tonnato, burrata cheese, grilled octopus, shrimp in spicy tomato sauce, marinated scallops, chili and lemon marinated olives, yellowfin tuna tartare and lastly beef carpaccio. The burrata cheese and yellowfin tuna tartare are my favorites, full of flavor and delightful to taste. For the main course, I decide to order a true Italian dish and keep it authentic with the basic spaghetti bolognese. The portion size is generous and the bolognese is mouthwatering, an enjoyable and a good-tasting dish. The service is efficient and very professional throughout my dining experience. For my dessert, I opt for the chocolate fondue and the mango and pistachio sorbet. The chocolate fondue is toothsome, the chocolate is concentrated and flavorful. An enjoyable way to end my culinary journey at Mezzaluna, Emirates Palace. The verdict, if you are looking for authentic Italian cuisine in luxury surroundings look no further than Mezzaluna at Emirates Palace. From the menu, the service to the location Mezzaluna has that luxury element and authentic ambience which brings Italy to Abu Dhabi in more ways than one. Shang Palace

26 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts signature restaurant, Shang Palace takes guests on an unprecedented voyage through authentic Cantonese cuisine. Having impressed diners from across the globe its sister restaurant in Hong Kong has already wowed diners so much so it was awarded two Michelin stars. We stand outside Shang Palace eagerly awaiting the dining experience that is about to unfold. Two large wooden doors part to unveil the red hanging lanterns and pristine white table cloths. Small picture frames hang on the dark wooden walls adding a sense of timeless elegance. The staff are dressed in graceful traditional silk embellished dresses and great us with true Asian hospitality. Admittedly we need some help with the menu. Not because the food isn’t described well but because the choices all sound so delicious we want to ensure we don’t over order. To start the BBQ honey chicken rolls with salt duck egg yolk. The presentation is sublime, the chicken has been rolled around the egg yolk to offer bites of effortless deliciousness. The BBQ honey offers a subtle taste not overpowering the thick slightly salty taste of the duck yolk. Also to start we enjoy the dim sum platter. If Picasso did food this dish would have been his signature dish. A selection of colorful dim sum is served on a large white plate, decorated beautifully with small leaf like details. This is one dish you will want to Instagram. Up next the wok- fried Gulf prawns, smothered in XO sauce and garnished with baby carrots. Four plump Gulf prawns are stylishly

presented before us and they smell sensational. As we take our knife we cut into one of the desirable prawns, steam echoes out and again our senses are filled with aromatic bliss. The prawns are perfectly cooked, the carrots add flavor and texture and the XO sauce works in harmony with the prawns to create a phenomenal dish. For mains, the deep-fried hammour with sweet and sour sauce. The hammour has been carved so that the fin and head remain only to add to the dramatic presentation. The fish itself is served on the side and is presented in small rolls surrounded by the sweet and sour sauce. Each bite of fresh fish is enjoyed with a healthy helping of sweet and sour sauce. Now onto the dessert, admittedly I was ready to skip the dessert selection as I haven’t come across a Cantonese dessert that I have ever enjoyed. However, chef convinces me to try the baked cheese egg tart with raspberry and lychee. Shortly after two small glazed pastries arrive, it looks recognizable, which is a good start. I place a small bite into my mouth, it tastes amazing, I enjoy it so much so that I finish both the tarts. The texture is similar to that of a custard slice but the taste is slightly more savory. Shang Palace offers authentic Cantonese cuisine. Our recommendation, explore the menu, try new dishes and order a few dishes that perhaps you’re unsure of, you wont be disappointed. Hoi An

Today I am visiting Hoi An to experience their new menu. The revamped menu promises to be even more exciting than the previous, with dishes retuned to offer diners modern, imaginative Vietnamese cuisine.

As I enter Hoi An I am welcomed by a kaleidoscope of vibrant coloured lanterns hanging from the ceiling. On a full moon, the streets of Hoi An host one of the greatest lantern festivals in Asia. Mopeds with colourful lanterns abound the streets, playing traditional music and games, taking the old town back to yesteryear. This sets the tone for the rest of my dining experience. The menu is well presented, dishes offer easy to understand descriptions and the layout is simple to navigate. If you are new to Vietnamese cuisine Hoi An offers a selection of set menus, influenced by various regions in Vietnam like Saigon, Hanoi and vegetarians also have their own set menu. To start we select the Chef’s recommendation, the papaya salad, large prawns sit atop of a crunchy green papaya salad, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, carrot, green apple, peanuts and citrus vinaigrette. This is the perfect start, the papaya salad is light, flavourful and the freshness of the ingredients is evident. Next, Vietnamese rice paper rolls wrapped around poached shrimp, chicken, rice noodles, aromatic herbs and hoisin sauce. You have to applaud this dish, using simple ingredients chef has created a dish that is delicate and appetizing. The hoisin sauce adds a touch of zest making it the perfect accompaniment. From the mains, we experience the oven baked seabass. The seabass is wrapped in a lotus leaf and served with fresh herbs and kumquat sauce. Its appearance is rustically authentic, the slightly crisp lotus leaf illuminates the vibrant amber herbs. As the seabass flakes off our fork and onto our palate we are engulfed by a multitude of flavours. This dish is by far our favourite and one that would have us returning back even sooner. We also sample the grilled duck breast which has been marinated in lemongrass and comes served with orange sauce. The duck is perfectly tender with the crushed nuts adding just the right amount of texture. The lemongrass is discreet with the orange sauce being the more dominate flavour. Finally, the dessert, sticky rice served with cut mango and coconut ice cream a perfect end to a true Vietnamese dining experience.

28 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

The new menu is superb! It offers a wide variety of proteins from chicken, fish to beef ensuring that whatever your preference you will find something to your liking. I especially liked the focus on the vegetarian options, I can’t tell you the amount of time I’ve spent with vegetarian friends as they tirelessly try and find dishes on the menu they can eat. Hoi An gets extra points for catering to the vegetarians in the city. The prices are reasonable for the quality and portion size, starters average around AED 60* and mains around AED 125*. The ambiance is relaxed and if you manage to get a table outside do so, the views are spectacular. A few dishes such as the coconut chicken curry, clay pot braised tofu and “Saigon” beef salad are on my list to try next time. Hoi An is a dining aficionado’s dream restaurant. Chef and his team have skilfully mastered the art of Vietnamese cuisine. The food here is creative, flavourful and beautifully presented. Vibrant dishes burst with flavour, offering your senses an experience that you will be sure not to forget. This is what makes Hoi An one of my favourite restaurants in Abu Dhabi. Teatro

30 | Dining and Nightlife Abu Dhabi

Teatro at Park Rotana sits unassumingly next to the well-known TwoFour54 building. Unless you know it is there, you will absolutely miss the life-sized red Teatro lettering on the sidewalk next to the valet... providing the perfect Instagram backdrop. Teatro’s theme is Theatre and dining there is entertaining. Don’t worry, nothing about it is cheesy. There is no gaudy decor, nor any table-side magicians. Just great food and knowledgeable service. Past the large open bar, in the intimately lit dining room, hang white chandeliers and heavy satin curtains. It feels like a dining room converted from London’s famous West End. The kitchen is semi open, which allows for a mid-meal glance “backstage” into Teatro’s kitchen. Teatro somehow manages to expertly execute a vast menu that focuses on Asian and Italian specialties. I know it sounds like an odd mix, but they are catering to their global clientele and they pull it off with amazing grace. Most of the plates are on the smaller side, except for the mains, which allows you the option to taste a nice variety of their offerings. We started off with a complementary amuse bouche that really did its job to whet our appetites. Three small bites: one of polenta with caramelized crispy onions, one of spicy mapo tofu and one of a tandoor grilled shrimp. Each one was a perfect tantalizing tease of what was to come. Moving on to a few starters, The sakura salad is marinated tuna and salmon sashimi in an addictingly tangy Japanese vinaigrette. The sweet and sticky veal ribs are covered in a Malaysian black pepper glaze and cooked tender to the bone; and the jumbo prawn tempura is so lightly fried in the Japanese method to leave the prawn juicy, while the coating crispy, that I will be craving these for days.

Next, sushi. Teatro covers the spectrum from traditional to inventive. Two specialties are the rainbow roll focusing on a colourful array of sashimi, and the Passion Torch Roll which intricately presents “torched” slices of tuna. Just a hint of that nicely charred flavour. The fish was all very fresh, the rice sticky and if someone asked me where to go for great sushi, I would point them here. For the mains, the popular miso seabass is a choice that will never go wrong. A generous chunk of moist, caramelized Chilean seabass is served atop glazed Asian greens and seared mushrooms, with pillowy potato almond croquettes. While miso glazed fish is a popular dish at a few of the uber high-end restaurants across the capital, it is undoubtedly re-created equally well at Teatro, and with a much more attractive price tag attached. The classic surf and turf is also another not to miss. A dripping steak and a plump lobster tail are plated on creamy mashed potatoes. Homey but decadent. Finally, The Big Show, this dessert option covers all the bases with a little of each signature sweet. The espresso mochi and the lemon grass creme brûlée were two stand outs. Additionally, Teatro proved that they have mastered gelato and fusion cuisine with a creamy Thai-coconut version. Like theatre, Teatro’s food is presented beautifully (with detail and care on intricate Japanese dishes), but like great theatre, there is delicious substance behind the flair that makes you want to return again and again. For our main course, we decide to go for the steak, in particular the tenderloin. I select the Australian Wagyu MB6 300g and my dining companion opts for the New Zealand grass fed 300g. For sides we order the sautĂŠ forest mushrooms, truffle mash potato, Mediterranean vegetables and creamed spinach. Cheese lovers, like my dining companion will be pleased to see the stilton fondue sauce on the menu. I personally stick with the classic French bĂŠarnaise. To add to the flavor the waiter brings out nine mustards, each come from their own geographical location, we opt for the whole grain and the garlic and parsley. Another notable detail is the salts chef and his team have sourced a variety of salts to compliment your meal, be sure to try the lava salt.

Overall our dining experience was delightful, from the service to the food quality, Blue Grill exceeded our already grand expectations. Currently Blue Grill would be one of our top 3 steakhouses in the city. The menu is easy to navigate, dishes are creative yet ingredients finely balanced and the quality of the cuts is still high.
