The Historic Queens Grill Relaunches

The Queen Elizabeth 2 has relaunched its royal restaurant as a modern British bistro, after an extensive renovation and the addition of a sophisticated lounge, a private dining room and two outdoor terraces offering stunning views of the ocean and of Dubai’s skyline.

Once the most famous restaurant at sea and renowned for serving the most caviar in the world (until the Burj Al Arab opened in 1999) the Queens Grill occupied the former first-class dining quarters of the QE2 and reopened in April 2018 when the QE2 was launched as a permanently docked floating hotel and dining destination in Dubai. In the summer of 2019, the world renowned restaurant served its fine dining menu for the last time before closing to undergo an extensive refurbishment. The reimagined venue has now reopened as a modern British bistro. The newly refurbished interiors of the Queens Grill feature brown and white chequered marble flooring with dark wood panelled walls, offset by circular tables and comfortable sofas and chairs. The theme runs throughout the venue and into the private dining room and the bar area. The décor has subtly transformed the Queens Grill’s antique interiors into a stylish venue that boasts the ambiance and vibrancy of Dubai’s cosmopolitan culinary scene. Located on the Boat Deck, passengers will now enter the restaurant via exclusive elevators and a dedicated arrival lounge, plus, also have the option of dining inside or outside on the terrace.

The brand-new menu showcases the best of British delicacies with an infusion of modern gastronomy. Signature starters include Smoked Haddock and Scottish Haggis Pâté and Wagyu Crudo, whilst the main course selection features Salmon Wellington, Cod and Chips, Gourmet Duck Burger and Beef Short Rib. The dessert options include Classic Treacle Tart and Rhubarb and Custard Crème Brulee. The Queens Grill will open for dinner from 7.00pm to 11.00pm from Monday to Saturday. A three-course meal for two starts from AED 185. Adjacent to the Queens Grill Restaurant is the Queens Grill Lounge, elegant, modern and adorned with a new era of QE2 elegance, the former officers’ quarter has been restored to present a sophisticated lounge Take a seat on plush multi fabric sofas that line the white panelled walls or on the emerald velvet chairs perched at the marble bar. Admire the stunning mural that frames the bar, perfectly reflecting the earthy interior features of the venue. Weekend Roast At Oak Room

18 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

If you do one thing this weekend, make it the Weekend Roast at Oak Room. Located at The Abu Dhabi EDITION, Oak Room offers a traditional English oak panelled restaurant, celebrating world-class ingredients with British rock ‘n’ roll flair. The décor in Oak Room is as stunning as it is unique, plush velvet British racing green upholstery, dark wooden tables, large golden globe chandeliers and images of rock and roll legends don the walls. Created by Michelin star Chef Tom Aikens, the Weekend Roast is available on both Fridays and Saturdays from 12.30pm to 4.30pm and includes a 3 hour beverage package. We arrive around 2.00pm and the restaurant is packed with guests all enjoying a deliciously extravagant roast. We opt to skip the pre-dinner drinks at the bar and take a seat in the main dining room. The menu is presented to us and I must say I am very impressed with the menu, which also caters for vegetarians and vegans, meaning that no family member or friend has to miss out on a Weekend Roast ever again. The menu offers a choice of Roast Beef Sirloin from the trolley, (we will come back to that later) Roasted Lamb Loin stuffed with Spinach and Half Roasted Chicken. For pescatarians the menu offers a Pan Fried Salmon with Lemon Butter and for vegetarians and vegans a Salt Baked

Celeriac which consists of honey, macadamia nut and parmesan. All come served with Yorkshire pudding, Cauliflower Cheese, Roasted Potatoes, Green Beans, Roasted Root Vegetables, and Gravy. The Salt Baked Celeriac swaps out the Roasted Root Vegetables and Gravy for Broccoli, Watercress Salad and Horseradish Sauce. I select the Pan Fried Salmon with Lemon Butter whist my dining companion opts for the Roast Beef Sirloin from the trolley. We enjoy Oak Room’s signature bread and butter whilst we eagerly await our roasts arrival. The plates arrive and feature a plump Yorkshire pudding (which meets official Yorkshire Pudding standards and is 4 inches tall) the Roast Potatoes and for me the Salmon. My dining companions Roast Beef Sirloin arrives on the trolley which is a nice touch and gives us the opportunity to chat to chef, it does also add a bit of culinary theatre to our dining experience. The Salmon is delicious and flakes off the fork, whilst the Roast Beef melts in the mouth, and the Roast Potatoes, well we could easily just eat a bowl of these they are that good. Even the Green Beans and Roasted Root Vegetables are tasty.

Desserts range from Mixed Berry Trifle, Violet and Chocolate Éclair, Crème Brulee, Apple and Blackberry Crumble and a Selection of British Cheeses. As we are reviewing the Weekend Roast and our commitment to giving our readers a full overview of our experience is paramount, we opt to try a little of each of the desserts and cheeses (I know, this level of commitment is hard to come by lol). We are in some debate about the final stage of our dining experience, I would probably recommend the cheeses, I really enjoy the range of cheeses, the chutney and the crackers although my dining companion is adamant that the sweet selection isn’t to be rivalled. Quintessential, considered and modern, the generous menu at this new-age steakhouse encourages guests to indulge in the very best produce, free from formality. Uncomplicated in approach, the menu consistently showcases signature British dishes, paired with a robust beverage selection. Here, theatre is not saved for the kitchen- it is constantly on show, with a frosted glass-fronted

butchery to enhance the diner’s senses and assert the importance of the restaurant’s quality produce. Private dining is also available at Oak Room, with a warm and intimate 10-person room available for group bookings. Would we return to Oak Room? Yes! In a heartbeat. The Weekend Roast is spectacular, and we would definitely return again for this, but we wouldn’t rule out dinner one evening either. We would recommend the Weekend Roast for families, couples or groups of friends. The Weekend Roast is available Fridays and Saturdays, 12.30pm to 4.30pm and is priced at AED 250 per person for soft beverages, AED 388 per person for selected beverages and AED 488 per person with bubbles. Eat The World At Garage

22 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

Garage is the new disruptive culinary movement to arrive at W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island. The concept which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner recently launched B.I.G (Brunch In Garage), the hotel’s Friday brunch, which is proving to be a huge success with residents in Abu Dhabi.

First, we begin with the Crab Cake from the Meat Vault. Seeing the portion size for ourselves we understand why our waitress recommended that we share each dish. The large plump crab meat flakes off the fork, perfectly paired with the harissa aioli and roasted red pepper salsa, this is one dish we would highly recommend.

The multi-faceted dining hub is driven by five unique concepts: Steam Table, Nikkei House, Mezza Bar, Meat Vault and Tart Van, alongside one bar, Tap Wall, serving a curated selection of handcrafted beverages.

Next to arrive is the Acevichado Rolls from Nikkei House, (sticking to the crab theme) the rolls consist of lump crab meat, cucumber, pickled pepper, acevichado sauce, tobiko and avocado. Chef has done well to pair each ingredient, resulting in a fresh We decide to take a seat by the window and begin to look through playful dish. At this stage, I will say that we have majorly the menu. Guests may enjoy the outdoor terrace, although there is underestimated the portion size, note to all, be sure not to ample seating inside, and tonight, we are quite happy sitting close overorder, the portions are ridiculously generous. to the kitchens so we can enjoy the live culinary theatre. Having From the Steam Table the Garlic Cucumber Salad and the Crispy initially been under the impression that we would have to physically manoeuvre around each of the five concepts we are Lotus Root Prawn Fritters arrive. Simple yet delicious, the dark thrilled to learn that the menu features all the dishes from each soy, vinegar and coriander gives the Garlic Cucumber Salad a refreshing zesty taste. The Crispy Lotus Root Prawn Fritters come kitchen, meaning that we are able to relax whilst the food comes served as four piping hot, perfectly battered bites of goodness. served to our table. Food is served when ready, and is recommended for sharing, take this into account when ordering. March | 23

Finally, onto the mains, my dining companion orders the USDA Prime Tenderloin 180g from the Meat Vault whilst I, excited to see Ramen on the Steam Table menu, select the Salmon, Salmon, Salmon Ramen option, which (as the name suggests) comes with salmon three ways, salmon fillet, crispy salmon skin and ikura (salmon caviar). I can’t tell you how excited I am to finally find a good Ramen in Abu Dhabi, this dish is my ultimate dish of the night, the consistency is spot on and I love the various salmon textures. If you try one dish at Garage let it be this one. That said I don’t want to overlook the USDA Prime Tenderloin, Meat Vault really did bring its A game. What we really like about Garage is the diverse range of cuisine on offer. Initially I had thought that with so many kitchens the service or the food quality may have dwindled, but not at Garage. Every dish is perfectly executed, and the service flows seamlessly. As a concept Garage is very unique but I think that W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island is ahead of the curve with this dining trend, as sharing concepts are on the rise why not expand the menu to more than one type of cuisine? The restaurant full of diners indicates its success and shows that this is a concept we may see more of in the near future.

In pure W style, Garage is a cool, quirky, yet approachable dining option, dine out with friends or family there is something on the menu for everyone. Walking through to Kayto, situated with perfect views of the recognizable neighbour, and overlooking the pool and beach, the former pop up restaurant is a location to easily spend a few hours. With a modern interior featuring plenty of natural light, we choose one of the best tables, near the window, with the Burj providing a backdrop for us to enjoy lunch. If making reservations, be sure to request one of these seats. With a peek at the menu, we’re interested in what the Peruvian-Nikkei restaurant has to offer. Our server, who is highly attentive throughout the meal, takes our drink order and returns with Edamame, for my dining partner and I to snack on. We begin with Crispy Rice, which is topped with a Spicy Tuna Tartare. We love the combination and wish more restaurants in town served some form of crispy rice. We’re also served a subtlety flavoured Sea Bass Sashimi with stunning presentation. The theme of beautiful plating runs throughout the meal.

Next up is my favourite dish of the day, Roasted Langoustines, creatively served in a stylish glass with the perfect amount of shiso salsa. The delicate protein is cooked to perfection, and we love the seasoning. The Salmon Tataki, is easily the most beautifully presented dish of the day, with an excellent blend of vegetables, and a slightly sour miso karashi sauce. While I am initially a bit suspicious of the Tuna Truffle Ceviche, the dish is a well-blended balance of earthy and savoury. Often, truffle is taken too far by chefs and ends up overpowering a dish, we like the restraint shown in this Kayto recipe. Additionally, while I make a bit of a mess at the table between all of the starters, our server swoops in to easily switch out plates between courses. We try two sushi rolls next, and it’s the Soft Shell Crab, that is the winner for both of us. The creamy Aji Amarillo sauce puts the roll on another level. We also enjoy the Tuna roll with creamy spicy sauce. We’re happy that the portions are quite generous and should keep any sushi enthusiast happy. Furthermore, we note that should you be in the mood for something other than Kayto’s signature rolls, traditional sushi is available on request. March | 27

For our main courses, we decide on both a beef option and a choice of seafood. The dishes are delivered at the same time and include the Marinated Sea Bass, which is served with creamy Aji Amarillo Rice. The dish involves a bit of tableside action, which adds a little bit of flair to our dining experience. While my dining partner wants a bit more umami, I am happy that a restaurant is trying a different approach with the fish. The Wagyu Beef Tataki, arrives at the table, sliced thinly and served up with Japanese mushrooms and a selection of Kayto sauces. Much like all of the dishes we’ve sampled so far, our main courses could, and easily is, split between two people.

Would we go back to Kayto? We can’t think of a better place for lunch (including the reasonably priced AED 130 business lunch) or a romantic spot for a date night. Overall, we feel the prices are in line with the location and quality of ingredients.

Edamame, AED 25 Crispy Rice, Spicy Tuna Tartare, AED 70 Sea Bass Sashimi, AED 70 Roasted Langoustines, AED 75 Salmon Tataki, AED 65 Tuna Truffle Ceviche, AED 80 Soft Shell Crab Rolls, AED 75 For dessert, we receive what might be Dubai’s most perfectly sized Tuna Rolls, AED 65 Marinated Sea Bass, AED 185 cheesecake, with a small scoop of mandarin sorbet, as well as a selection of mochi. Yes, we’re full and satisfied. Overall, we love the Wagyu Beef Tataki, AED 220 beautiful interior, straightforward and uncluttered approach to the menu and attentive service. Andaz Dubai The Palm

30 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

March | 31

There is no denying the Palm Jumeirah is a competitive market, and hotels cannot rest on their laurels - especially with new properties opening all the time. We decided to visit the latest hotel to arrive on the scene, the stylish Andaz Dubai The Palm. Andaz Dubai The Palm rests on a 300m private beach, within walking distance of Nakheel Shopping Mall. Located on the right trunk of the shoreline, the two 15-story towers house 217 bespoke guest rooms and 116 individually imagined designer residences. Boasting a mix of fresh and contemporary sized spaces and floor to ceiling windows with 360-degree views of Dubai’s ever-evolving skyline, each room promises a unique experience centred around contemporary Arabic arts and crafts. Paying homage to Dubai’s young and dynamic Emirati design culture, guests can expect local touches throughout – from textiles inspired by Sadu, geometrical embroidery on traditional handwoven fabrics to beds framed by a canopy of waved wood to create a modern interpretation of a Bedouin tent. Creating a lasting impression, the hotel’s vibrant entrance harnesses the power of the sun to create a visual language of shadows and colour typical to the region.

we’re pleasantly surprised by the experience. Even better? The Locale focuses on sourcing locally where possible, and we see this in the use of produce from Greenheart Farms, as well as Fish Farm. We personally love that a global brand has made it a priority to work with local produce. Our room is a suite and quite spacious with a sitting room and table for six, as well as an extra half bathroom. We even have a small balcony, which gives partial views over the interior of the Palm, as well as the garden and beach area of the property. We would note that when making a booking, it’s probably best to request a room on an upper floor, or away from the street noise (if you’re sensitive to sound). Overall, we like the modern decor and colour scheme, even if the beds are a little firm for our preference. We spend our afternoon at leisure, hanging out at the adultsonly pool on the 14th floor. While service could be a bit quicker (especially as we are the only guests), we enjoy the view of Nakheel Mall and the rest of the Palm below us.

Our dinner is onsite at The Locale, and our server is one of the best we’ve had in a while. She’s knowledgeable about the menu, friendly, and takes great care of us. With an international selection The lobby is large and filled with unique textures and quirky - although we eye the DIY salad counter - we’re in full staycation artwork from up and coming local artists. We eye the small mode and order the Nearly A Caesar, AED 60, Avocado Hummus, boutique with bespoke and artisan items, we’re also drawn AED 68, and for mains, the Vietnamese Beef Pho, AED 80, and the Chef Gani’s Homestyle Chicken Curry, AED 95. While our towards The Locale, the hotel’s neighbourhood eatery. After visiting many (many!) all-day dining outlets in our day, we’re happy dining partner is content with the serving of pho, the curry is to see a restaurant with a twist. As a spot for a healthy or indulgent plenty to split between two people. Our dining companion also visits the dessert counter and comes back with an almond breakfast, lunch, or dinner (we’ll tell you more about that later), 32 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

All of the dishes are something we would order again, with the creative take on the hummus (spoiler alert - it includes prawns!) being our favourite dish of the evening.

The following morning, after a filling breakfast at The Locale (eggs to order for me, and an Asian selection for my travel companion), we decide to hit the gym. It’s located on the same floor as the adults-only pool (and seriously, we wish more hotels had this feature). After rinsing off, we head down to the oversized infinity-edged pool and beach to soak up some sun. Additionally, we have a late booking for the onsite spa, Ora, where we are well looked after during a heavenly hour-long massage.

Another feature worth highlighting is just how close the property is to everything. We can walk across to Nakheel Mall for a bit of shopping or stroll over to Club Vista Mare. Would we return to Andaz Dubai The Palm? Yes! We like the range of dining options, not only on the property but also in the area. Rooms start at approximately AED 1000 a night. French and Vietnamese Food In Harmony At Indochine

36 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

For those not in the know, Indochine is a French-Vietnamese restaurant that opened in New York in the 1980s (and yes, the original outlet is still going strong). Whilst I visit plenty of restaurants in the UAE, prior to my dinner reservation, the opening of the Indochine Dubai branch had been generating a buzz that I’ve rarely experienced. Tucked into where Grammercy used to be (in case you’re an old-timer like me and like to understand the provenance of a location), the new Indochine is marked by a neon sign. Once inside the venue, we love the use of planting, moody lighting, and signature wallpaper. The interior is broken into intimate spaces, including a lounge and dining room, but all done in ways not to overwhelm. Given that DIFC is prone to oversized restaurants, we’re a big fan of Indochine’s cosy corners. What also immediately strikes us is the soundtrack. In fact, throughout the evening, we’re opening our phones to track the music so much that our server offers to download the tracks onto a USB -- talk about service!

Beef and Green Papaya salad, served with wagyu flank steak and yuzu soy dressing. As a group of three, this dish is easy to split. Although the consistency looks a bit strange, the subtle taste of the Prawn Kinilaw, which is served with homemade prawn crackers, is one we also all enjoy. We’re curious about the Escargots, which promise lemongrass and kaffir herb butter. Served up with house-baked baguette, our server (yes, Vlad again) offers to demonstrate the best way to eat this delicacy, and we’re happy to take him up on his offer. Another favourite is the Crispy Eggplant, which features slices of aubergine coated in spiced caramel. The veggie dish is equally original, and entirely moreish (a dish I would order as soon as I sat down on my next visit). Another must-try is the Wok-Tossed Rice Noodles, a recipe exclusive to Indochine Dubai. The rice noodles are more like tiny dumplings, or ‘Vietnamese gnocchi’ as Vlad calls them. The dish is served with sesame seeds, soy sauce, crunchy asparagus, king oyster mushrooms, scallions, bean sprouts, and shallots.

So, what does French-Vietnamese cuisine look like? I’m fortunate that one of my dining companions is of Vietnamese descent and more than happy to chime in with her opinion. After a review of the There are five rolls to choose from, and we decide on two of them. menu, which is broken down into several categories, our vibrant One is the Vietnamese Ravioli. Arriving in a steamer basket, and waiter Vlad explains the concept is meant for sharing and helps filled with chicken, prawn, and shiitake mushrooms, everyone answer our questions about the different dishes. else at the table seems to enjoy the dish, but the lack of texture isn’t something I particularly like. Perhaps your palate will differ. Fortunately, the simple but well-executed Fried Imperial Rolls, are literally something I can’t stop eating. The combination of shrimp and chicken, along with some fresh salad and bright dipping sauce are fantastic (and yes, there is a vegetarian version). For ‘main’ dishes, we decide to bypass the Black Cod (there’s plenty of it already in Dubai, yes?) and instead try the Crispy Scale Amadai, another dish exclusive to the Dubai outpost. Do I usually look forward to fish scales? Not particularly, however, I do thoroughly enjoy the crispy skin and accompanying lemongrass sauce. For the record, while all the dishes we’ve had so far feel priced correctly, this is the only plate I think is a bit on the high side.

From what you might have gathered, the fantastic music, well above average service, electric interior, and a menu that has plenty of highlights, Indochine is one of our favourite new restaurants in the city. Would we go back to Indochine? It’s rare to be able to recommend a place in Dubai that we confidently believe will always have a good vibe but Indochine is that place.

Beef and Green Papaya Salad, AED 68 Prawn Kinilaw, AED 70 Escargots, AED 105 Crispy Eggplant, AED 48 Wok-Tossed Rice Noodles, AED 76 Vietnamese Ravioli, AED 65 Fried Imperial Rolls, AED 55 Finally, we order not one, but two desserts and the Banana Crispy Scale Amadai, AED 186 Beignets, are a little bit of heaven. The bananas are served up with Banana Beignets, AED 45 homemade dulce de leche and disappear quickly. The Vietnamese Vietnamese Coffee Panna Cotta, AED 50 Coffee Panna Cotta, isn’t as big as a success, but those looking for Indochine, Gate Building 3, DIFC, Dubai, +971 4 208 9333 more subtle flavours should be happy with the plate. Hutong Dubai, Contempory Northern Chinese

40 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

With locations in London, New York, Miami, and their original restaurant in Hong Kong, Dubai is the latest city to open a Hutong. The brand promises contemporary (and occasionally fiery) Northern Chinese cuisine, including amazing dim sum and creative beverages, all served in a stylish setting with a beautiful outdoor terrace. And just in case you weren’t aware or needed to be further impressed, the Hutong in Hong Kong was one of the first Chinese restaurants to ever be awarded a Michelin star. Is Dubai’s venue star worthy? Let’s find out! We approach Hutong via the crowded roundabout at DIFC, across the street from Emirates Towers. Unlike many DIFC restaurants, Hutong is on the ground floor (although we don’t notice a lot of noise once inside). Given the pleasant weather, we opt to sit outside on the terrace, which is made private by planting and creative design. Inside, the restaurant is home to a memorable lounge bar and a private dining room. In the centre of Hutong you’ll also find the Wishing Tree, created by a Chinese master and imported to Dubai. What did we wish for? We’re not going to tell! Fortunately, we didn’t have to worry about hoping for a good meal. Our dining partner had visited the London outlet some years previously, so it is interesting to have his perspective throughout the meal. As we sit down, we are invited to have a look at the

beverage menu, which includes some of the signature drinks which are found around the world. To start, we try a play on prawn toast, the Hutong Prawn Roll, which is divided into six generous pieces. We’re happy to split the dish, which would be appropriate for three people as well. The roll is perfectly crispy, and we like the blend of prawn and scallop. Our other starter, the Chilled Green Asparagus, is unique. While we enjoy the combination of white sesame and honey glaze, the dish is a bit messy, lacks some of the depth of flavour I’m craving, and is probably not one to order on a first date (sesame seeds everywhere). For a signature dish, we try the Red Lantern, aka deep-fried spiced soft shell crab. Delivered in a literal basket of chiles, the presentation is strong, and we can see why this is a highly requested dish. The crab is buried in a pile of chiles, which we dig out with our chopsticks. Perhaps our chopstick skills aren’t up to the right level, but while the heat and cook of the crab is correct, actually eating the protein can be a bit unwieldy. Fortunately, we’re also served a truly delicious Wok Tossed Beef Tenderloin, and Shrimp Fried Rice. The fried rice is kicked up a notch with the inclusion of chili fennel seed paste. Similarly, the beef tenderloin March | 41

42 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

(which I can’t seem to stop eating) is tender and well-seasoned (if you prefer a higher amount of heat, you can enjoy the Laoganma chilies that are served with it). For desserts, instead of making a choice between two, we decide to order both. The clear winner for both of us is the Ma La. The blend of chocolate mousse, a spicy cremeux, and the sour plum sorbet add up to a lovely balance of flavours. While the Bao and Soy presents well, overall, it’s a bit bland for both my dining partner and I. A blend of East and West, the sesame ganache, sesame biscuit, sesame praline, and soy ice cream just don’t hit the same levels as the other dessert. Finally, overall, we’re not sure about the music selections for Hutong, but we’re willing to overlook this detail as the rest of the experience is a nice one. Our server was well versed in the menu and happy to work with the kitchen to lower the level of heat in some of the dishes (something I really appreciated). We also liked the range on offer throughout the menu. Guests can visit for a variety of experiences from dim sum, signature dishes, or (of course) Peking duck.

Would we return to Hutong? While it’s no surprise that DIFC is busier than ever, and we have always loved Royal China, we do think there is room in the market for both restaurants. Hutong would be an excellent location for a client lunch, or for those looking to push the spice envelope. Hutong Prawn Roll, AED 65 Chilled Green Asparagus, AED 45 Red Lantern, AED 190 Wok Tossed Beef Tenderloin, AED 210 Shrimp Fried Rice, AED 65 Ma La, AED 60 Bao and Soy, AED 60 Hutong, Gate Building 6, DIFC, Dubai, +971 4 220 0868 By Courtney Brandt

Upon breaking the news that we suddenly have four new dining options in Abu Dhabi we scurried down to Rixos Premium Saadiyat Island to try one of their dining outlets for ourselves. After much deliberation we decided to try L’Olivo, the hotels Italian restaurant. As we enter the hotel the lobby is buzzing with guests, we make our way to L’Olivo and take a table in the main dining area. The dÊcor of the restaurant is a blend of plush interiors with mirrored pillars and walls, bright yellow seating and roman emperor busts which work in contrast with more traditional items such as the large wooden shelving and open pizza oven. The menu features a selection of antipasti, soup, salad, pasta and risotto, and dessert. In total the menu offers around twenty two dishes, although we would like to see a few more dishes on the menu, the ones that are available do sound fantastic, and they do have vegetarian options. To begin I select the Melanzante, roasted eggplant with tomato, mozzarella and basil and my dining companion opts for the Caesar Salad, which comes in a choice of chicken or shrimp, he opts for chicken. The Caesar Salad is light and fresh, we like the fact that chef has been generous with the chicken. However, the Melanzante is superb, its refreshing to see that chef has opted for something different than a Parmigiana which is on most menus at Italian restaurants in the city, and still found a way to pay homage to the humble eggplant. 46 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

Having been recommended the Saffron Risotto by the waitress, I decide to go with her recommendation. The Saffron Risotto comes with ossobuco, sliced zucchini and parmesan cheese, I ask the waitress if they can remove the ossobuco to make it vegetarian, they happily oblige. My dining companion selects the traditional Spaghetti Bolognese, a nice and simple Bolognese sauce with cherry tomatoes and parmesan cheese. Both portions are the perfect size, ensuring that we leave feeling satisfied without having overeaten. The dessert menu does look extremely tempting with Tiramisu, Meringa Italiana, Semifreddo and Sicilian Cannoli all on offer. However, we decide to pass on this occasion. The food is good, the service is friendly, and the price point is competitive, with the most expensive dish on the menu priced at AED 85, we suspect that Rixos Premium Saadiyat Island will be a great success. Weekend Brunch At Dino’s

What are weekends for if not spending time with family and friends over a good meal? Dino’s Bistro Italiano offers a superb weekend brunch, which runs on both Fridays and Saturdays, 12.00pm to 4.00pm, and offers guests unlimited starters, mains, pizzas, sharing dishes and desserts, served right to the table. We decide to check out the brunch on a Saturday afternoon. As we arrive the restaurant is bustling with guests, families, couples and groups of friends are all enjoying a leisurely Saturday afternoon brunch. We take a seat by the window on the elevated platform which allows us to view the live pizza making station. We begin with some warm Focaccia Bread and Red Pepper Dip. The menu is presented to us and offers a choice of two soups, four starters, three pizzas and six mains along with dessert, and a great selection of coffees. A selection of beverage packages is available for those wishing to enjoy. The menu is designed to allow us to tick which dishes we would like, a quirky feature that has us interacting. Eventually we decide to skip the soup and go straight for the starters and mains, we select the Calamari Fritti from the starters, Vegetarian Pizza, from the pizza section and the Risotto Al Funghi and the Fettuccine Alla Bolognese for our mains. We ask the team if they can make the portions slightly smaller, they offer to make the portions enough for one person, which for us is more than enough, however if you do not ask for a smaller portion then each portion will be served for two people to share, given that you can order an unlimited amount of food, one thing is guaranteed, you won’t be leaving Dino’s hungry. Food is served when ready and first to arrive is the Calamari Fritti. Served piping hot the Calamari Fritti offers crispy golden bites of deliciousness, a great start to our experience at Dino’s. Next to arrive is the pasta dishes, Risotto Al Funghi and the Fettuccine Alla Bolognese. The Risotto Al Funghi is new on the menu and an ideal dish for vegetarians. But don’t worry if you are looking for some protein you can always choose from the Chicken Parmesan, Veal Scallopini, Mediterranean Sea Bream, Fettuccine Alla Bolognese or Hand Rolled Pasta with Chicken and Mushrooms, each dish is equally as good as the next. The Risotto Al Funghi is divine, the risotto has been cooked well and the dish offers a mmm…. in every bite, I would without a doubt order this dish again. The Fettuccine Alla Bolognese is enjoyable but is overshadowed by the Risotto Al Funghi. Worth noting is that even though we requested our portions be made for one, we both easily share the Risotto. Halfway through our pasta our Vegetarian Pizza arrives. I must say Dino’s does a surprisingly good pizza, don’t get me wrong I was expecting it to be good, but it surpasses my expectations.

March | 49

We take a short break after our mains and order a coffee. The ambiance is relaxed, there is something to be said for a lazy Saturday brunch. Concluding our dining experience, we are served with a range of assorted house desserts. The desserts are served as an assortment but if you have a preference just advise the team. We ask for more of the Lemon Meringue, which may I add is the perfect way to conclude your dining experience at Dino’s. Overall the pacing of the dishes is great, we’ve all been in the situation where either nothing arrives or suddenly your rushing to finish a plate to make room for the next, this wasn’t the case at Dino’s the team have the pacing of each dish down to a fine art. The service is always warm and friendly and even though the restaurant was busy the Saturday we visited the team did well to stay calm and never let the level of service slip.

We would definitely go back to Dino’s, for us personally we would rather visit on a Saturday when the ambiance is a bit more relaxed. This brunch is great for those seeking a relaxed brunch experience with a focus on good Italian food, we would highly recommend this brunch for families and couples. Dino’s Weekend Brunch takes place every Friday and Saturday from 12.00pm to 4.00pm and offers three brunch packages, AED 165 soft beverages and mocktails, AED 200 selected beverages and AED 215 for bubbles. The SPA At Palazzo Versace

52 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East

March | 53

There’s just something about the grand lobby of Palazzo Versace. As I arrive for my appointment at The SPA, I take a moment to soak in all the iconic imagery and decoration. I then make my way to the west wing of the property, where The SPA is located. Upon arrival, The SPA is everything I’m expecting at this ultra-luxury hotel. The space includes seven treatment rooms, a spa suite, a nail studio, and two Moroccan Hammams. As one would expect, both the ladies and gentlemen’s relaxation areas have plunge pools, steam rooms and saunas. The list of treatments ranges, and utilizes high-end luxury brands from across the world. The SPA is known for result-driven facials, luxury holistic massages, energizing body treatments and luxury manicure and pedicures. Today, I’m booked in for a facial and massage. I begin my experience with a fresh chilled towel and glass of water presented in a signature Versace branded glass (of course). Unlike some properties I’ve visited where the spa feels like an afterthought, at Palazzo Versace, there is nearly 1000sqm of wellness, including marble floors of Granito Nero Assoluto and stunning mosaics. The plunge pools are done in vibrant turquoise mosaics, and the mood lighting adds to the relaxed atmosphere. After dipping into the plunge pool and getting myself comfortably tucked into my plush robe, I take a seat on the heated loungers and wait for my appointment. If I’m going to give any feedback, it’s that I don’t think a few more towel and robe hooks would be out of place in the relaxation area (as I couldn’t find any).

ability to adjust to different levels of pressure (at my request). After I’m fully relaxed, she raises the bed slightly, and we begin my bespoke facial, featuring Dr. Burgener and NEOM products. The facial combines several steps over the sixty-minute treatment. We start with deep cleansing, then move through resurfacing, firming, hydrating, anti-aging, and finally, nourishing. At the beginning, a product is applied to plump my skin before five minutes of steam to open my pores. This is followed by a natural micro peel to remove dead cells and clean deep beneath the surface. There is an anti-bacterial effect that helps with the reduction of everyday breakouts, and removing dead skin cells softens fine lines and wrinkles. This is followed by a facial massage, and then a mask is applied. While the mask is drying, my therapist massages my décolleté, shoulders, and arms. As it’s been a while (months) since I’ve had a facial, I walk out feeling like my face is much healthier than when I walked in. After my treatments, I’m very fortunate to meet up with Dr. Pauline Burgener. With a Ph.D. in biology, she originally thought her career would be in medicine but realized early on she was wellpositioned to understand and help best treat skin types from around the globe. Among her charitable projects, she’s also funding an atelier in India, focused on education and employing local women. Overall, we love her approach to using the best of modern technology and natural elements to provide the ultimate products to her clients. Would I return to The SPA? Yes. In fact, I’d probably make a day of it! Furthermore, now that I know a little more about the woman behind the brand, I’m determined to seek out her products wherever I am in the world.

Today, I’ll be testing two treatments. The first on my list is one of the signature massage ceremonies, the De-Stress. Utilizing a complex blend of 24 of the purest essential oils including lavender, jasmine, and Brazilian rosewood, the scent of the De-Stress Massage, AED 550 mixture is relaxing and not overpowering. While my talented Bespoke Facial, AED 780 therapist focuses on relieving key stress points on my head, face, neck, and back, the hours in front of the keyboard slowly drift The SPA at Palazzo Versace, Dubai, +971 4 556 8750 away. She combines the best techniques of shiatsu, cranio, Thai massage, and trigger point work. I’m especially appreciative of her By Courtney Brandt 54 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East
