Pachaylen
Located in the tranquil Eastern Mangroves Hotel and Spa Abu Dhabi by Anantara you will find Pachaylen, one of Abu Dhabi’s most authentic Thai restaurants. This classic yet sophisticated Thai restaurant offers a menu of timeless Thai dishes. The interior features dark wooden tones with hints of gold detailing, the high ceiling and dim lighting add an element of elegance. We take a seat close to the kitchen, allowing us to watch as chef creates each dish. Considering it’s a weekday the restaurant is fairly busy with many couples enjoying a romantic meal. The menu is easy to navigate, and the clear descriptions really help us in selecting our dishes. For appetizers I opt for the Tood Man Poo Kha Onn, pan-fried crab cake with chilli sauce and cucumber relish, whilst my dining companion orders the Poh Pia Jay, fried vegetable spring rolls with ginger and sweet and sour sauce. The crab cakes are delightful and the chilli sauce helps to emphasize the chunky crab flavor. The vegetable spring rolls are equally as enjoyable, these spring rolls aren’t as heavy or as greasy as others we have tasted in the city.
To accompany our starters, we order the Tom Yum Kung, spicy prawns, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, straw mushrooms and coriander infused into a delectable soup. The soup is full of flavor with the lemongrass being the dominate ingredient. From the salad menu we sample the Yum Som O, a pomelo salad served with prawns, crispy shallots and sweet tamarind dressing the pomelo salad has the perfect balance of crispy texture and citrus taste.
12 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East
From the curry section of the menu I order the Gaeng Kiew Waan Kai, chicken green curry with Thai basil and baby eggplant. The dish is rich and creamy, the eggplant, a favorite vegetable of mine, works extremely well in adding not only texture to the dish but an additional layer of flavor. My dining companion orders the Khung Yang Kratiam Prik Thai from the steamed and grilled section of the menu. This dish consists of, bok choy, pepper sauce and crispy shallots that smother the large grilled tiger prawns making each mouthful a delight. For sides we opt for the Khao Phad Jay, a light yet tasty vegetable fried rice, the perfect accompaniment. For dessert we select the Khao Niew Ma Moung. Chiang Rai coconut sticky rice pudding with sweet Thai mango. Made fresh, each dessert dish is carefully crafted in the open kitchen and the Chiang Rai coconut sticky rice pudding with sweet Thai mango is no exception. We opt for one dish to share, our only regret this evening is that we didn’t order another. Pachaylen, offers a delicious array of traditional Thai cuisine from taste to presentation you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to Thailand. Steakhouse & Grill
Summer 2019 | 19
For tonight’s dining review we are visiting Marco Pierre White Steakhouse and Grill located at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, Abu Dhabi. The restaurant boasts dramatic interior design, recently revamped this includes a back lit ‘flame’ wall, upscale furnishings, beige and black upholsteries and large but comfortable seating. Guests will experience an eclectic combination of innovative grill cuisine and classic English fare. The menu is clear and concise, which is a refreshing change from most steakhouses. For starters we order the Classic 1970’s Prawn Cocktail with marie rose sauce, brown bread and butter. This dish is true to its word, a classic prawn cocktail. Served in a glass the chopped lettuce makes for a firm base for the prawns and thick marie rose sauce. A delightful start to our dining experience. We also try Mr. White’s Fresh Crab with mayonnaise sauce and toast melba. The fresh crab is beautifully presented. We place a generous helping on the toast melba and take our first bite, as the crab meat is very light, the mayonnaise helps to bring the dish together.
20 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East
The Seaside Salad with King Prawns is next up, brown shrimps, mixed leaves and Mr White’s salad cream. This dish is our least favourite, whilst there is nothing wrong with it, in comparison to the other dishes it just seemed a bit less exciting. From the classic salad’s menu, we order the Heritage Tomato and Burrata Salad with fresh basil, extra virgin olive oil. The burrata is delightful, soft texture and creamy to taste, just the way it should be. The medley of tomatoes does well to add colour and a range of luscious moments. Moving on to the steaks! Marco Pierre White Steakhouse and Grill offers a range of cuts from the Master Kobe Grade 9 priced at AED 595 to the affordable yet tasty 35 Day Aged Ribeye Prime US Beef at AED 180. Wanting to go mid-range I order the Grilled 35-Day Aged T-Bone Prime US Beef Steak 500g with classic peppercorn sauce with a side dish of crispy onion rings. We request the steak is cooked medium, once served it doesn’t disappoint.
The culinary team at Marco Pierre White Steakhouse and Grill are performing exceptionally well this evening, especially as the restaurant is almost at full capacity. This is partly due to the Great Steakout promotion which takes place every Wednesday from 6.00pm to 10.00pm. Guests are invited to choose from a selection of unlimited steaks, a choice of four sauces, side orders including triple cooked chips, garlic sautéed mushrooms, asparagus, sautéed spinach, potato dauphinoise and tomatoes confit to name a few, plus a wide selection of beverages. Prices for this start at AED 245.
Finishing on savoury note we order the Cheese Board to share, consisting of fine cheeses, grapes, crackers and chutney. For those wanting something sweet we would highly recommend the Sticky Toffee Pudding.
My dining companion, a vegetarian, who was slightly hesitant about dining at a steakhouse is well catered for at Marco Pierre White Steakhouse and Grill as the restaurant does have a section of vegetarian dishes on the menu, given its only about three dishes but at least they are trying to cater for all their guests. After some time, she orders the Velvet Artichoke, with Wild Mushrooms A La Provençale, served with a green salad and truffle dressing. This dish impresses, even the truffle side salad leaves us wanting more. Unable to resist we also order a side of the Baked Macaroni Cheese. Again, exceptional.
Classic 1970’s Prawn Cocktail, AED 80 Mr. White’s Fresh Crab, AED 115 Seaside Salad with King Prawns, AED 85 Heritage Tomato and Burrata Salad, AED 95 Grilled 35-Day Aged T-Bone Prime US Beef Steak 500g, AED 255 Crispy Onion Rings, AED 28 Baked Macaroni Cheese, AED 35 Velvet Artichoke, with Wild Mushrooms A La Provençale, AED 99 Cheese Board, AED 80
Overall, we had an enjoyable dining experience at Marco Pierre White Steakhouse and Grill, from the pleasant team to the well-executed cuisine, we would highly recommend a visit. Be sure to try the Great Steakout on Wednesdays with a selection of prime cuts at only AED 245, you can’t afford to miss it!

Villamore
22 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East
The new Emerald Palace by Kempinski really does live up to the name of Dubai’s new Palace by the sea. Upon entering an undeniably opulent lobby, with a grand piano, gold leaf embellishments and elongated colonnades, the hotel offers and impressive visual assault, a stark contrast to the beachfront setting of the Mediterranean restaurant Villamore. A standalone structure, close to the hotels swimming pool, Villamore is like a breath of fresh air. A two-story structure heavily influenced by the trattorias and tavernas of the Mediterranean manages to be both chic and rustic in equal parts. Led along stone floors and down whitewashed corridors, we find ourselves on the pleasant terrace. Decked out in blue and white upholstery, Villamore provides the distinct feeling of Santorini island life. A sense that’s only heightened by our unique location, sat upon the sands of Palm Jumeirah with striking views towards the glittering skyscrapers of Dubai Marina piercing the horizon. Villamore’s Barefoot Lunch attracts a more mature crowd than we perhaps expected and looks to simplify the weekend brunch experience with a four-course set menu of Mediterranean dishes that leans heavily into the cuisines of Italy and the Levant whilst maintaining a strict focus on seafood. We begin in the anti-pasti room (yes you read that correctly) here guests are encouraged to graze on a selection of cold mezzes, cheeses and cured meats. We highly recommend the Spanish Manchego drizzled in balsamic oil and honey which accompanied by a fine beverage, marks a wonderful start to this weekend affair. Summer 2019 | 23
24 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East
Go easy on the anti-pasti though, as this lunch includes a lot of food! Beginning with a selection of appetizers served directly to the table. The Bacalao Croquettes are generously stuffed with salted cod and provide just a hint of lemon, allowing the full flavor of the fish to shine. Simplicity reigns supreme throughout the Villamore menu and the focus on high quality ingredients certainly shows. Even the Mediterranean Salad of chunky tomatoes, cucumber, fennel and Persian feta is memorable for the intense flavor of the sun-kissed tomatoes.
Mediterranean classics served sharing style includes a Ricotta Cannoli and a rather dense Orange and Almond Cake with black olives! The desserts certainly showcase some interesting flavor combinations and we certainly appreciate the Vanilla Panna Cotta with macerated strawberries, balsamic vinegar and pepper. The Decadent Chocolate turns out a little too decadent! A rich mass of flourless chocolate cake, amaretti cream and hazelnuts, which we would’ve devoured had we not overdone it in the anti-pasti room earlier.
What’s a weekend without oysters? It would seem that Dubai decadence has ensured oysters are a firm fixture of brunch menus throughout the Emirate and the French Fine De Claire Oysters served here are particularly enjoyable with their pomegranate and shallot vinaigrette. The Tuna Tartare served in a bowl shaped like a spiked sea-urchin allows the tuna and avocado to complement one another but unfortunately the gazpacho poured on-top is a little too acidic.
Villamore is more of a relaxed brunch than an all-out party and feels like a weekend hideaway thanks to the inclusion of pool and beach access in the brunch package. The venue marks another successful operation within the new Emerald Palace by Kempinski and it’s exciting to see another outsourced venue thriving in what is actually quite a difficult location. The relaxed vibe that transitions effortlessly from day to night positions Villamore as a memorable dining location but what really sets the restaurants apart is the strive for excellency in ingredients. Keeping things seasonal, local and sustainable where possible.
Four main courses are offered – Roasted Sea Bream, Sirloin Tagliata, Whole Fed Corn Chicken and Lemon Risotto – of which guests select one each. The Sea Bream is a large fish which arrives whole and is expertly filleted table-side. Once again, the simplicity of ingredients and pronounced flavors abound, and the tender flesh is delightful. Of a similar caliber, the Lemon Risotto is cooked al dente with an abundance of cheese. The creamy mixture has subtle hints of lemon which works wonderfully with the sides of bitter leaf salad and a chilli garlic broccolini.

The sleek, colorful venue is the second incarnation of much-loved Toro Toro, offering diners and hotel guests an elevated experience combining food, fun and flamboyant features. in Abu Dhabi. The terrace is set to open later in the year when temperatures cool. The new and exciting menu offers popular Pan-Latin dishes served as sharing platters, including Soft Shell Crab Tacos and Cachapas (Venezuelan sweetcorn pancake, halloumi cheese and sour cream), Grilled Meat Churrasco and traditional Rodizio served a la carte, alongside a selection of savory side dishes to complement the cuts. Chef Sandoval is committed to delivering exceptional food with memorable experiences; this winning combination has been the key to success in his numerous restaurants around the globe. Growing up in Mexico City, Richard Sandoval would join his grandmother in the kitchen and gather around her large table with family to enjoy lively Mexican feasts prepared from scratch. From his grandmother, he learned to respect fresh, authentic, ingredients and create the vibrant flavors that turned
family dinners into celebrated events. Meanwhile, his restaurateur father - owner of Madeiras in Acapulco and Villa Fiore also in Acapulco - imparted lessons in service and restaurant management. Sandoval, who was once a professional tennis player and had toured the world participating in prestigious matches, had such a passion for food that he decided to enroll in the Culinary Institute of America. Golf Resort And Spa
Summer 2019 | 31
Overview As we arrive at The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa we are warmly greeted by the team. From the valet, which may I add are always welcoming to the front office team. Our check-in is swift, yet professional. A pleasant start and a great first impression by the team at The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa. The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa offers an exhilarating, picturesque five-star golf and spa resort located in Abu Dhabi, with inspirational views and rejuvenating amenities. The hotel focuses on wellness and it aims to serve as a recreational destination. The Heavenly Spa, 27-hole championship golf course, a workout studio and three swimming pools pay homage to this. The hotel offers six key dining destinations. These include Sacci, which is an authentic family style Italian trattoria that pays tribute to the rich heritage of Italian food and beverage. Fairways, which overlooks the lush green golf course, is the all-day dining venue and host to the hotels famed Bubbalicious Friday Brunch. For pub-grub guests will enjoy The Retreat with its informal bar 32 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East
atmosphere, it is the perfect spot to watch all the sport. Lemon and Lime is a great nightlife hangout, enjoy a few beverages in a relaxed atmosphere. The Lounge is the place to go if you want to grab a quick bite, worth noting is that the hotel has recently partnered with Starbucks, so you won’t have to go far to get your caffeine fix. Finally, if you want to spend your time lazing by the pool Shades, the hotels informal and upbeat pool bar serves a range of beverages and light bites. Room For our visit, we are staying in a Garden Guest Room, located on the ground floor. The floor to ceiling windows gives the room great light, high ceilings add a sense of space whilst the balcony that comes with spanning golf course views gives guests a place to unwind. The Garden Room at 45sqm offers guests ample space. The room is partitioned into two main sections, the bathroom which features a bathtub, separate restroom and a rain shower and

the main bedroom which features a working desk, sofa, and the hotels signature Heavenly Bed, made from seven layers of various fabrics you literally feel as if you are sleeping in a cloud. All the rooms are air conditioned and come with USB outlets and premium movie channels.
During our visit at Heavenly Spa, we opted for the 60 minutes Heavenly Spa Signature Massage which includes a heated compress to relax muscles before the Swedish Massage takes place. The treatment has two durations one 60 minutes priced at AED 440 or 90 minutes priced at AED 540.
Heavenly Spa The Heavenly Spa at The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa embodies a health-enhancing philosophy, enabling guests to immerse themselves in a unique world of physical and mental renewal. Guests can enjoy the invigorating power of their signature techniques in one of six treatment rooms. A range of spa treatments and massage services are available, from body wraps, facials, to hair treatments.
Dining Tonight, we are dining at Sacci, as it is too warm this evening, we sadly won’t be able to enjoy the spanning outdoor terrace, so we make our way indoors. The dÊcor at Sacci is electric, from pink walls to tiled floors its refreshing to see such a bold Italian restaurant. We take a seat and begin to review the menu. The menu features all the classic Italian dishes you may expect.
Admittedly we arrive slightly late to the spa, but the team do well to accommodate. However, we do face some confusion such as lack of gowns, slippers and details about the treatment. The massage itself is relaxing and does leave us feeling refreshed but sadly we have to prompt the team to take us to the relaxation area after our treatment. The relaxation room is enjoyable, bright and airy with a range of healthy snacks and teas. 34 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East
For starters, we decide to try La Burrata, truffle burrata with toasted bread, mushroom confit and rocket salad along with the Bruschetta, a traditional tomato bruschetta with fresh basil and garlic oil. This is joined by the Parmigiana which is a baked eggplant, buffalo mozzarella in a rich tomato sauce with a hint of basil and, certainly last but not least the Calamari Fritti which
consists of fried calamari with lemon mayo. The Burrata is superb, the rich truffle paired with the creamy thick texture is pure bliss. The Bruschetta is exceptionally well done as is the Calamari. Sadly, we don’t enjoy the Parmigiana the eggplant paired with the buffalo mozzarella makes this dish too chewy for our liking.
The Verdict From the moment you arrive to the time you check out the service at The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa is fantastic. The team are genuinely warm and welcoming and always happy to help.
For the main course, I order the Spaghettini All’ Aragosta which is house spaghettini with half lobster and bisque. The bisque itself gives the dish just the right amount of flavor, the pasta is light, and the chucks of tasty lobster make this dish work every dirham. This dish is delicious and the highlight of our dining experience at Sacci. My colleague opts for the Margherita Pizza a classic Italian home comfort dish. Although the base of the pizza is great the heavily loaded cheese makes it too oily to enjoy.
Our room was excellent, impeccably clean, we checked under the bed, behind the bed and on top of top of the TV, not one spec of dust was to be found, a fantastic job by housekeeping. Cleanliness aside the room is beautiful, light airy and spacious, plus the Heavenly Bed has to be the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in.
Having slightly overindulged on the starters results in us having to skip dessert, we really couldn’t eat another bite which is disappointing as having tried the Tiramisu by Sacci we know what we are missing out on.
The dining options at the hotel ensure that even the fussiest of eaters will find something to enjoy. Sacci does remain the crown jewel of The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa’s dining options. A new Italian chef will be joining the team over the summer and will be making some changes to the menu, so stay tuned. Attention to detail is evident in all aspects of the hotel and our overall experience was fantastic, we would recommend The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa for golf enthusiasts. Blue Grill
36 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East
Blue Grill, Yas Island Rotana’s popular steakhouse now boasts an open kitchen where guests are invited to sit and watch as chef and his team articulately create a range of dynamic dishes. Blue Grill highlights hearty steaks from the US, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia and more, all chargrilled to order. First impressions of the menu, high quality offerings, presented in a condensed one-page menu which is clear and concise. The price and value are aligned with what many guests are currently wanting, good quality produce at reasonable prices. The menu offerings have been well thought out by the culinary team, ensuring it appeals to a wider audience with dishes like Seafood Platter, Saffron Shrimp and Mango Salad and Roasted Butternut Salad.
Now onto the starters from the ‘Let’s Begin’ section of the menu, we opt for The Wild Mushroom Soup with parmesan crostini and truffle oil. The soup is thick, yet the truffle oil adds a touch of silky luxury to the taste. My dining companion orders the Lobster Bisque with crisp lobster cigar, citrus mascarpone and soft herbs. The Lobster Bisque is bold and full of flavor, most definitely the strongest flavored Lobster Bisque in Abu Dhabi. Personally, this is exactly how I like it, but for those who prefer subtler flavors be sure to advise the team.
Having already tried, and thoroughly enjoyed, the USDA Prime Rib Eye and the Australian Wagyu MB6 we decide to move away from the steaks and really put the culinary team to the test. For the main course, I order the Grilled Portobello and Black Another notable change is the new salad bar at Blue Grill which Bean Kofta, harissa cauliflower ’steak’, braised kale, tahina and replaces the bar, this is a great addition to the restaurant. The honey sauce. What better way to test the chefs at a steakhouse salad bar features a range of salads from the classic Greek Salad than to order a vegetarian dish? This dish offers a range of to the more imaginative Beetroot Salad with Orange Segment, flavors from the crisp kofta shell to the sensual center Orange Dressing and Feta Cheese. We especially enjoy the emphasized further by the light and spicy cauliflower. The scrumptious Coleslaw. portion is also extremely generous, so much so that I struggle to finish my plate. Summer 2019 | 37
38 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East
My dining companion opts for the Pan-Seared Salmon Steak, spice rubbed and served with asparagus spears, mango and coriander salsa. The salmon flakes off the fork effortlessly and is very delectable indeed. The mango and coriander salsa adds a flair to the dish, giving it a hint of zest elevating the entire mood of the plate. For sides we order the Grilled Asparagus in truffle oil and parmesan and the Mash Potato with truffle. The desserts are presented to us on an I-pad, this is brilliant as we can see what each dessert looks like. For our dessert, we opt to share the Melting Moment which consists of white chocolate ball, vanilla cheesecake, lemon curd, fresh berries, chocolate soil, raspberry crispy and caramel sauce. The caramel sauce is poured over the white chocolate ball, as it collapses it exposes the sweet treats hidden inside. The Melting Moment dessert is a fun and refreshing finish to a great dining experience at Blue Grill.
Overall our dining experience was delightful, from the service to the food quality, Blue Grill exceeded our already grand expectations. Currently Blue Grill would be one of our top 3 steakhouses in Abu Dhabi. The menu is easy to navigate, dishes are creative, cuts are of good quality and variety and all are within a reasonable price range. The team have also informed us that over the summer they will be making some changes to the menu, we are very excited to revisit in September to try it out. Torno Subito
When Chef Massimo Bottura opens a new restaurant, it’s time to sit up and take note! Bottura’s 3 Michelin-starred Osteria Francescana situated in the heart of Modena, Italy, topped The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list in 2018, cementing a reputation as one of the world’s pre-eminent dining destinations. Here in Dubai we have Torno Subito, Bottura’s very first restaurant opening outside of Italy. Situated on the ground floor of the fun and vivacious W Dubai The Palm, the Italian eatery marks one of the cities most anticipated restaurant openings in recent memory and one that has been met with intense scrutiny from restaurant critics and food aficionados alike. Going in it’s important to note that Torno Subito is not Osteria Francescana, nor it is trying to be and perhaps this is what has confused diners who have travelled out to the West Crescent of the Palm Jumeirah in search of a fine-dining experience. Torno Subito is undeniably causal with interiors that feel more like an ice cream parlor and play directly into a concept that looks to encapsulate Bottura’s childhood holidays spent on the Italian Riviera. The decor is awash with pastel colors. Powder pinks, sunshine yellows and baby blue hues saturate a dining room that screams fun, while a large image of chef Bottura himself leads the way into the restaurant and the word ‘exit’ traces along the monochrome floors. It’s colorful, flamboyant and very un-Dubai. In a city accustomed to sleek and sexy interior design, it’s nice to see Torno Subito completely buck the trend and fully embrace a sense of childhood nostalgia. Out on the terrace guests will find gigantic beach balls, colored beach huts and pedalos lining the shore. These can be hired with a picnic from the restaurant to really enjoy the Torno Subito experience during the cooler months. Alternatively guests are invited to sit on the beach with their toes quite literally in the sand, this has been imported from Rimini to bring an authentic Adriatic coastal experience to Dubai. Bottura may not be present in the kitchen on a day-to-day basis but he has hand-picked Chef Bernardo Paladini to represent him at Torno Subito. He and much of the front of house team have spent many years training with Bottura at Osteria Francescana to ensure the highest levels of food and service for diners in Dubai, and it shows. Staff are happy to engage in discussions and talk animatedly when it comes to recommendations and the thought processes behind each dish. Pizzas and pastas make up the majority of the menu, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any surprises in store for diners. We begin with a complimentary amuse-bouche of Pappa A Pomodoro, a dish that uses tomato sauce, bread, parmesan crust and béchamel foam to create a comforting Tuscan soup beloved my many Italians. The Uovo, while perhaps not the most appealing dish when it comes to appearance, is a triumph of flavor. Presenting a slow-cooked poached egg with Parmigiano-Reggiano and topped with black truffle that complements the velvety yolk.

Perhaps the most significant choice on the menu for those looking to capture an aspect of the Osteria Francescana dining experience is Torno Subito’s Caesar Salad. Looking to bring a piece of Modena to Dubai via a startling combination of 14 ingredients that represent an evolution of this traditional salad.
This is exemplified with the dessert course and the Tiramisu Torno Subito in particular. Plating lashings of foamy mascarpone with coffee ice cream, espresso sauce and meringue, this take may upset tiramisu purists but certainly makes for a unique reinterpretation of the classic Italian dessert. The deconstructed Dark Cherry Cheesecake is also of note thanks to a combination Visually stunning, the mix of ingredients and textures make the of pine nut crumble, ricotta cheese and cherry sorbet. salad a must order, especially if accompanied by a serving of Tagliatelle (available in small or large portions) which is Torno Subito marks another celebrity chef fronted concept at W described as Bottura’s favorite and is based upon the same Dubai The Palm, in addition to Akira Back Dubai. Michelin-Star lamb ragu recipe from the aforementioned world’s current notoriety and strong food have resulted in this particular hotel number one restaurant. being the current talk of the town. Moving onto the secondi or main course, we cannot resist the Polpo a dish of roasted octopus, green pea cream and pickled vegetables that have been cut to resemble flowers. The octopus is beautifully prepared and may be one of the best cooks of the protein we’ve had in Dubai. The pea purée lacks a bit of prominence, but the plate works wonderfully. Catch of the day is Red Mullet and emanates a more intense flavor than we expected. Stuffed with langoustine and cooked ‘al cartoccio’ in the pizza oven, the fish is presented with a delightful crust that brings texture and a rich sauce made from mussels, pepper and squid ink, making quite the impression in stark contrast to the pink crockery emblazoned with Torno Subito branding. While Torno Subito as a concept may be inspired by the post-war Italy and the notion of La Dolce Vita (the sweet life), the cuisine is focused more upon the evolution of tradition.
While some may struggle to connect with the unexpected casual nature of Torno Subito, the restaurant in fact offers a seamless fit for the beachfront location and fills a niche gap in the dining landscape on the Palm Jumeirah. With the restaurant’s name translating as “I’ll be right back” in Italian, this is one phrase we can wholeheartedly agree upon when it comes to this Italian spot. Since its inception The Warehouse has quickly gained the reputation as one of the best dining and nightlife venues in Abu Dhabi. The interiors are modern with a touch of urban chic, the menu boasts a range of irresistible small plates and the expansive beverage menu is sure to please guests. We make our way through the small winding corridor and emerge into The Warehouse where we are warmly greeted by the team and shown to our table. We are introduced to the menu by the team who share their recommendations with great enthusiasm. The food options are clearly displayed on one page, as the concept is sharing style, we decide to order a wide variety of dishes. From the Jars and Pots section we select the Sizzling Prawns with togarashi mayo, scallions and sesame seeds. This turns out to be the star dish of the evening. The taste of the plump prawns is only further enhanced by the delectable juice that sizzles beneath them. The Light Bites offer irresistible options, we opt for the Avocado Hummus with vegetable cruditĂŠs and pita crisps and the Spicy Tuna Poke Tacos with toasted sesame, soy ginger salad and red radish. The Spicy Tuna Poke Tacos are delightful and another dish we would recommend, the crisp taco shell adds the texture whilst the marinated tuna filling brings all the flavor you could ask for. The Avocado Hummus is a must for avocado lovers but be warned it is very rich and creamy. From the Flatbreads selection we order the Mushroom Flatbread with gruyere, thyme and garlic to compliment this we decide to order some fries. Options range from Halloumi Fries, Battered Parmesan Fries and Sweet Potato Fries. We eventually decide on the Sweet Potato Fries and the Battered Parmesan Fries. If you are in the mood to indulge the Battered Parmesan Fries is as good as it gets, the batter adds an

additional layer of crunch paired with the parmesan these fries are extremely moreish. Never able to resist Mac and Cheese we order a portion of the plain Mac and Cheese, guests do have the option to build their own and can include ingredients like, Turkish lamb, mushrooms and broccoli to name a few. The Mac and Cheese is served piping hot and dripping in cheese. From the Sweet Endings, we select the Strawberry Yum, two chocolate dipped strawberries, popping candy, melted chocolate, whipped cream and strawberry ice-cream, served on crushed ice in a wooden box, makes for a posh ice-cream sundae. This dish is yummy and the perfect ending to a calorific but enjoyable dining experience. Overall the food at The Warehouse is comfort food at its best. We found the portions to be more than generous and easily shared by two if not three people. Our advice would be explore the menu and try and many dishes as you can. Market Kitchen Thursday Evening Brunch
48 | Dining and Nightlife Middle East
Located within Le Royal Méridien Abu Dhabi, Market Kitchen serves modern American cuisine. Promising market freshness and the highest quality ingredients. The restaurants décor is light and modern, echoing elements of a New York loft. White painted brick walls are decorated with wooden shelving, featuring household kitchen tools. The dark wooden floor and low hanging lights give the restaurant a cozy yet urban vibe. The high beamed vaulting, floor to ceiling windows and the decorative tree in the middle of the restaurant ooze sophistication. Upstairs the attic bar provides a little hideaway overlooking the restaurant. This Thursday evening, we are visiting Market Kitchen to try their Market Kitchen Evening Brunch. This brunch is different to many other brunches in the city as it is served tableside. Guests can select their desired dishes from the menu which is then served directly to the table. All the dishes are displayed on a
one-page menu and broken down into three sections, starters, main course and dessert. Guests can simply choose as many plates as they wish from each of the three sections and reorder if they wish for more. To start, we select the Crispy Calamari with citrus chilli dip, the Butternut Squash Soup with cumin oil, the Salmon Tartare with avocado, radish and ginger dressing and the Kale Salad with parmesan, chili and croutons. As we don’t eat meat the team kindly swap the Beef Salami Pizza to a Truffle Pizza for us to enjoy. Firstly, this is a lot of food (and we are only on the starters) but it’s not just the value for money that impresses us it’s also the quality, chef and the team have not held back. Surprisingly the Butternut Squash Soup, served in a fun little mug is one of our favorite starters followed by the delectable Salmon Tartare. Since the new team joined the cuisine at Market Kitchen has really gone up a level.

The main course is where Market Kitchen’s Thursday evening brunch really excels. The menu boasts Slow Cooked Lamb Leg, Penne Pasta, Grilled Corn Fed Chicken Breast and assorted side dishes such as Garlic Roasted Potatoes and Steamed Broccoli. As we had previously informed the team we don’t eat meat they change a few dishes to accommodate. This isn’t just us getting special treatment the team here are extremely professional and they are more than happy to accommodate. We enjoy the Penne Pasta with tomato sauce and basil oil, the Salmon and Truffle Mash and the Seared Octopus with gochujang marinade, potato cream and parsley oil. The Salmon and Truffle Mash is one of the bestselling dishes at Market Kitchen, truly a delight. The Seared Octopus pleasantly surprises us, admittedly we would have overlooked it on the menu, but we are so glad Chef recommends it. Cooked to perfection our knife cuts through the Seared Octopus like a warm knife through butter. The gochujang marinade and potato cream add a divine richness to the flavor. The Penne Pasta is also well executed.
Ending our brunch on a sweet note we opt for the two desserts available. The Market Cheesecake with lemon cream, blueberry compote and blueberry sorbet and the Salted Caramel Ice-Cream Sundae with peanuts, popcorn and chocolate fudge sauce. For those who enjoy cheesecake the Market Cheesecake is light yet scrumptious. Both desserts score highly but our favorite is the Salted Caramel Ice-Cream Sundae, the contrasting flavors make it the more exciting of the two. We would highly recommend Market Kitchen’s Thursday Evening Brunch, the cuisine is exceptional, served to your table it arrives fresh every time and the relaxed atmosphere is a great way to start the weekend. Today, we are visiting Marriott Downtown Abu Dhabi to try their EAT.PLAY.LAUGH. Friday Brunch, promising a fun-filled Friday Brunch for grown-ups. For those of you who have visited EAT.PLAY.LAUGH. before, you will be interested to learn that the brunch is running over the summer but has changed location, having moved from Grill@25, the hotel’s outdoor rooftop pool and bar area to the indoor restaurant, Kuzbara. Along with the change of location the EAT.PLAY.LAUGH. brunch has also revamped its culinary offerings. We start to make our way around the open buffet and live stations. Our first stop is the sushi and sashimi station, new to the brunch. We enjoy a selection of Salmon and Tuna Sashimi alongside a range of sushi. Keeping with the seafood theme, from the fresh seafood station we enjoy Lobster and Shrimps, both are remarkably fresh. Also new is the Laksa and BBQ Bao Buns station, both highly worth trying.
Meat eaters will thrive at this brunch. JW Steakhouse is well represented with BBQ Beef Brisket, Roasted Leg of Lamb and all the trimmings from Onion Rings, Yorkshire Puddings to Grilled Carrot and Butternut Squash. Alternatively, enjoy the live grill station which has a wide selection of proteins that can be grilled freshly before you. Vegetarians are well catered for at this brunch, from the pasta station where a selection of Penna, Spaghetti or Tagliatelle awaits, to the Nachos, Tacos, Salads, Pizza, Cheeses and Desserts. Although weekends are rarely reserved for salads, the salads look so fresh that we cannot help but try a few, the Chicken, Mint, Lemongrass and Grapefruit is a great refreshing summer salad. Be sure to seek out the Pani Puri, from the Indian station, this Indian delicacy is delightful and throughout the brunch we probably eat more than we care to admit. The Indian station has to be our favorite and judging by the constant queue we would say we aren’t the only ones.
