Icebergs and the SS Great Britain The SS Great Britain encountered icebergs while at sea during some of her voyages. Diary entries written by passengers provided inspiration for the third act of Iron Island entitled ‘icefield’.

“No one who has not seen an iceberg can These are some of the passages from diaries: form an idea of the appearance of them, there was one which we were very close to, about John Henry Chatterton – Voyage 11 Return 50 ft high, over which waves literally broke “Whilst serving out the bread this morning we themselves till the whole thing appeared, heard that there was an iceberg in sight. Got when to sun shone, like a volcano of glass out my telescope and looked at it. It appeared throwing out showers of diamonds (that I to be about 6 or 7 miles off. The sun was consider a very neat thing in description).” shining brightly at the time, and it looked exceedingly pretty.” Charles Albert Chumley – Voyage 20 Return “…in the morning we were rather surprised to see 2 enormous icebergs which are very uncommon in this season, one was at some distance & could not be seen very distinctly except its shape and general appearance, but the was close on our port bow and certainly did present a most sublime appearance, it was covered with snow except where pinnacles of ice towered aloft & were too steep for snow to lie upon, it seemed slowly to turn round presenting new appearances every moment, this was of course partially caused by our moving on but it evidently was not steady, it was not more than a mile or two from us & could be seen most distinctly, as I was looking at it through a glass a large block slowly disengaged itself & rolled into the water with a tremendous splash, the whole block of the distance one must according to the sailors have been two miles long & the near one probably 2 miles & a half in circumference, the cold was intense while we were close to it & is even at this moment almost freezing my fingers, which circumstance added to the rolling of the ship makes this document rather illegible. We certainly had a most providential escape as steering 1 degree farther to the North would have sent us right against the ice ...” BRSGB-1999.001 Watercolour, painted on card, by W. S. Rowland, 1874. It shows the Great Britain rounding Cape Horn and passing an iceberg. This was painted on board the Great Britain when Mr Rowland was a passenger in 1874. Credit line for all three is ‘Courtesy of the SS Great Britain Trust’. 4

BRSGB-2013.00034 Article in 'The London Illustrated News', 12 November 1864. Reports on the passage of SS Great Britain around Cape Horn, noting the ship passed 212 icebergs in the space of three to four days in September. Also mentions that Captain Gray 'received from the passengers a gratifying testimonial of their esteem'. Includes illustration of the Great Britain at sea with massive icebergs in background.

BRSGB-2013.00035 Engraving and article in The Illustrated Melbourne Post, 25 August 1865. Engraved illustration of the Great Britain at sea with massive icebergs in foreground and background on front page. Also includes article on page 125 reporting on how on 7th April the ship 'was completely surrounded by icebergs of immense size and of every conceivable shape'. The article goes onto print an extract from a letter by the Reverend Doctor Cairns, a passenger on the SS Great Britain, describing the icebergs.

Immersive multimedia experience to bring the ocean back to the SS Great Britain For the first time in 50 years the sights, sounds and movement of a living sea will surround the ship’s hull.

• •

Working with poet Saili Katebe and composer Joe Acheson, Limbic Cinema will transform the dry dock into a huge digital projection theatre, filled with the energy of the world’s underwater oceans.

Entry is included with admission to Brunel’s SS Great Britain. Time slots are available to book now from 23 August to 19 September. www.ssgreatbritain.org/ ironisland

On 2nd September, a ‘museum late’ will allow people to book to see Iron Island and explore the ship ‘after hours’. Pop-up bars will offer an exclusive Iron Island cocktail, prosecco and full bar.

The SS Great Britain Trust is grateful to the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Lottery Players for supporting this programme.

6

Brunel’s SS Great Britain is the top-rated visitor attraction in Bristol, known for offering a fun day out for locals and tourists alike. Visitors discover two interactive museums along with the historic dockyard before stepping aboard to explore the SS Great Britain herself – the world’s first great ocean liner. From 23 August to 19 September, however, the dramatic dry dock will take centre-stage. The cathedral-like space is where the SS Great Britain was constructed between 1839 and 1843, now covered with a “glass sea” that helps to maintain the conservation environment that protects the fragile iron hull. The front end of the Grade II listed dry dock will be transformed into an immersive experience by award-winning multimedia design studio Limbic Cinema. It will combine projection, lighting and surround sound to transport audiences on a journey through underwater worlds.

Much of the 1,000 square metres of laminated glass overhead will be darkened, providing a truly unique space for projection-mapped imagery to emerge on the walls and the iron hull. Speakers set within the dry dock will resonate with music and sounds of the ocean, with an original score composed by Joe Acheson (Hidden Orchestra). Performance poet, Saili Katebe, has written a new spoken word piece for this installation, which leads the narrative. Having undertaken two residencies previously at Brunel’s SS Great Britain, Saili’s creative response explores themes of invention, discovery, migration and freedom. Visitors will descend under the glass sea to walk around the iron hull, becoming immersed in the multisensory storytelling as they reach the bow. Set in three acts – ‘ departure’, ‘storm’ and ‘icefield’ – the audience is taken on a journey that sets off across the ocean, encountering various sea life before a storm has the ship rising and falling in the waves with thunder and lightning all around. Glowing icebergs signal a more reflective pace as the ship navigates carefully through an icefield. Events depicted through the storytelling are developed from passenger diaries, providing a real sense of revisiting the ship’s long and dramatic history. Kate Rambridge, Head of Interpretation and Programming at Brunel’s SS Great Britain said “The SS Great Britain rests today back in her original dry dock, but she was designed for a completely different environment - the world’s oceans. In fact, this astonishing ship travelled more than a million miles at sea, and she still carries traces of salt in her iron hull. Although she’ll never sail again, digital multimedia can bring the sea back to the ship and show how she performed in that element – so that audiences can see her, once again, as resilient, graceful and dynamic.”

Thom Buttery, founder and creative director at Limbic Cinema said: “The combination of the iron hull, glass sea overhead and centuries-old brickwork make this a spectacular location acoustically and visually. Layer on the history and sense of bringing the sea back to the ship, and you capture a powerful sense of journey. Digital storytelling enables us to expand beyond the confines of the space. By augmenting the moving image with the ship itself we are able to create a real sense that the ship is in motion again.” Saili Katebe, a writer and performer based in South West England said: “The ship carried thousands of people to America and Australia - many of them leaving home forever. She still bears the cargo of their stories – so much hope, fear and ambition. I imagined the ship as an island made of iron, something which stays strong even in the upheaval of change and challenge.” 7

What's in season in August Heat-loving crops like tomatoes, cucumbers and chilies are in their prime now. Even aubergines and peppers, which are imported to the UK all year round, can be found growing in British greenhouses and veg gardens this month. If you don’t grow your own, visit your local farm shop, market or greengrocers to enjoy all that summer has to offer.

Vegetables to harvest or buy Aubergines Beetroot Broccoli Cabbage Cauliflower Carrots Celery Chard Courgettes and summer squash Cucumbers Fennel French beans Lettuce and other salad leaves Potatoes Peas and mangetout Peppers and chilies Runner beans Tomatoes Spring onions Sweetcorn Fruit to harvest or buy Blackberries Blueberries Raspberries Plums Early apple varieties such as ‘Discovery’ 8

This month we're talking about sweetcorn There is nothing like sweetcorn picked, peeled and popped in the pan straight away. It bears little resemblance to those starchy, ready prepared cobs you find wrapped in plastic on the supermarket shelves. If you don’t grow your own, look for cobs at greengrocers which are sold in their leafy husks, as these keep fresher for longer. The individual yellow kernals should release a milky liquid when cut into. Sweetcorn is a close relation of maize but, while maize is left to mature and become starchy so the kernals can be ground into flour, sweetcorn is eaten young and sweet. Fresh sweetcorn has been enjoyed by Native Americans for centuries and is now popular all over the world. Modern varieties we buy in the UK or grow ourselves have been bred to be extra sweet.

Easy DIY projects to upgrade your garden Make the most of your garden with these easy weekend DIY projects. Now is the perfect time to get back in the garden and give some TLC. We have put together this list of easy DIY projects that can be completed over a weekend.

Fairy lights Whether you decide to use them to line your fence, wrap them around a tree or drape them from your pergola, fairy lights always create a magical atmosphere. We recommend solar powered ones so that you don’t have to worry about having an outside power outlet, plus it saves on electricity – it’s a win-win.

Pallet sofa If your old patio furniture is looking a bit outdated but you can’t afford to buy a shiny new set, then an upcycled sofa made from wooden pallets could be a nice alternative. Guaranteed to make you want to sit out in the garden at the slightest hint of sunshine. You can make it fit any space and customise it to your heart’s content – a perfect weekend project.

16

Add a fire pit For those warm summer days and cool evenings, a fire pit is just the ticket for toasting marshmallows and sharing memories with those closest to you. This is such an easy project which can be completed in an afternoon and the end result looks amazing.

Painted fence Inject some colour into your garden by giving your garden fence a makeover. You’ll be amazed by what a good clean and a lick of paint can achieve. Remember... As most boundary fences are shared, make sure you check your deeds and speak to your neighbour first before painting. Alternatively, if you are renting your property, consult your letting agency as not to affect your tenancy agreement. It’s best to get this in writing to prevent any disputes that could arise.

Elim Housing Teams up with Local Artists to Create New Stokes Croft Mural

In partnership with the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft, Elim Housing Association has commissioned a new street art mural in Stokes Croft. The mural spans Elim’s Ron Jones House, a property for men who are either experiencing or are at risk of homelessness.

Paul Smith, Elim CEO, said: “Ron Jones House is at the heart of Elim’s heritage and service. The tagging was making it look really depressing. It was great to work with our neighbours at PRSC and residents to develop a design to give this building a real lift.” Chris Chalkley, Founder of the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft, said: "The idea was to create art for the Elim residents that was positive and that they could feel proud of. It was also important that the integrity of the buildings was respected. And it remains vitally important to respect the culture of the area, which is why one of the original tags that refer to Buzz, a well-loved graffiti artist who lost his life in a fall from a roof a few years ago, is incorporated into the new painting.

The design was brought to life by Bristol-based artists Harriet (Hazard), Samantha (Zam Zam) and Benoit (Object), whose work can be seen across the city including at Bedminster’s Upfest. They used a combination “Stokes Croft is effectively an area where of spray painting and brush designs, making their mark with three distinct styles across the people find their voice on the walls, and we need to find room for everybody. We are really walls. pleased to have been given the opportunity to explore these ideas and appreciate the trust More than just an attractive addition to the building, the artwork was consciously created that Elim have put in us. Funds permitting, to combat tagging – graffiti signatures – which there is so much more to come, and we look forward to developing a creative relationship made the area feel run-down. that will be beneficial for the whole Elim residents were involved in choosing the community." design, providing their ideas in a meeting with Elim residents and passers-by enjoyed staff earlier this year. watching the artists hard at work. Reactions The finished floral design was also inspired by were overwhelmingly positive, with many people finding it an uplifting addition to the the Stokes Croft china made in the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft building just opposite neighbourhood. the new mural site. Online sellers asked to be wary of money transfer scam Anyone selling items online is being warned of a scam which sees buyers pretending to have transferred money but making off without paying for the goods. Avon and Somerset Police are aware of several incidents in recent months where a seller has advertised something for sale and the buyer has agreed to pay for it when picking it up. When the suspect(s) attend the address to collect the item, victims are then asked to put their details into a fake banking app on the buyer’s phone. It will show the transfer is complete, as per the picture above, but when the victim checks their bank account, the money hasn’t gone in. When the seller has queried it, the buyer has told them it may take a couple of hours for the money to go through, however no transfer ever happens. The seller has then unsuccessfully tried to chase the buyer for payment via phone and online. Incidents have recently reported to us in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. We’d advise when selling items online to follow these tips to make sure you do not lose out in a scam: 20

Stay on the website when communicating with the buyer/seller Do your research on the buyer/seller to make sure they are genuine Use the recommended payment method, or you may not be refunded for any losses to fraud If the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Also, if anything the seller or buyer says raises a red flag, it’s probably best to go with your instincts and move on If you are selling online be wary of any emails stating funds have been sent. Login to your account via normal route (not via any link provided to you in an email) to check this. Be certain you have received the funds before handing over the item(s) you are selling. Anyone who has been a victim of such a scam, and not yet reported it, is urged to call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

Out and about this week in Brislington with Jos and Andrew Trees and parks update We met BCC Tree officers this week for an update on tree planting in Brislington West. We are delighted to confirm that funding has been confirmed for the new Arnos Court Park Bath Road boundary hedge, which will be a double-row of 200 whips comprising a mix of native species. Hopefully, this will be planted this December with the help of local school children. The ward has also secured a further 6 standard sized trees through Section 106 funding (from developers), which will also be planted this winter. More trees will also be planted across the ward courtesy of the Environment Agency. These will be street trees with locations including Hamsptead Road, Hillsborough Road and West Town Lane. The EA has also given BCC an additional voluntary donation of £6,000 to be spent in Nightingale valley. The plan is to plant 6 standard trees and a small infill woodland of 102 whips adjacent to the EA stream trap at the St Anne’s end of Brislington Brook. Applications have also been made for more trees using a new fund, Trees for Climate, including 35 standard trees for Callington Road near the nature reserve and 24 standard trees in Arnos Court Park to create an avenue along the diagonal path. Fingers crossed all these schemes come to fruition. If you know any other locations in Brislington West which would be suitable for tree planting, please let us know. Community Street Audit As part of the A4 Corridor project, Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, has been commissioned by Bristol City Council to facilitate two Community Street Audits in Brislington. This is to find out what local residents think about travelling and walking around in the area, what works well, and what can be improved.

Show some puppy love with community dog walk in Yate to mark National Dog Day In the run up to National Dog Day, housebuilder Barratt Homes is inviting people and their pooches to join a free community dog walk on Thursday, August 26.

Bristol Animal Rescue Centre (ARC) and Bath Cats and Dogs Home both provide essential support for vulnerable animals across the local area.

The event will involve a guided walk along nature trails surrounding the homes in Ladden Garden Village, a new community of 1, 2, 3 & 4-bedroom homes being created by Barratt Homes in Yate.

Katie Love, from Bristol Animal Rescue Centre, said: “We are delighted with this donation from Barratt Homes. We rely entirely on local support within the community to fund our vital work which focuses on helping find forever homes for lots of wonderful animals, a process which can take a long time and resources from rescue to rehabilitation to rehoming. A little goes a long way here, and I’m sure all the animals would be saying thank you if they could!”

The first 25 dogs to arrive for the community walk at 12.30pm will be rewarded with treats and bandanas, which is sure to get tails wagging. People can also enter a Draw Your Dog competition for the chance to win a £25 Amazon voucher. Entrants just need to draw or paint a picture of their pooch and drop the artwork into the Ladden Garden Village Sales Centre by Monday 16th August to be in with the chance of winning. The winning image will be displayed at Ladden Garden Village within the Show Complex for residents to see. Each month, as part of their community fund, Barratt Homes gives £1,000 to charities and organisations in the local area as part of their commitment to building strong communities close to their developments. This month, two much-loved local animal rescue centres in Bristol and Bath have been given donations totalling £500 each by the housebuilder.

Andrea Pilgrim, sales director for Barratt Homes’ Bristol division, added: “With many of us in the sales team dog owners ourselves, we loved the idea of a chance to celebrate our four-legged friends. We also know that not all pets are as lucky as ours and that’s why the work of Bristol ARC and Bath Cats and Dogs Home is so vital. We’re very happy to support the fantastic work that these two charities are carrying out in the community. We hope that this fun outdoor event for all the family will give people a chance to reconnect and that the dogs enjoy themselves too!” National Dog Day takes place on August 26th and is celebrated globally. Founded in 2004, it aims to not only celebrate dogs, but to raise awareness and encourage people to adopt one of the many dogs who are in rescue centres. To register for the free dog walk at Birds Marsh View on August 26 competition please click here. 27

£500,000 to boost re-start and recovery Anchor businesses in Somerset that attract people to visit and support a wider range of local enterprises are being urged to bid for grants to help them re-start and recover from the economic hit of the coronavirus pandemic.

Some affected were able to draw on Government support but many were unable to get the funding – or get enough to see them through the crisis and are now in financial difficulty.

Somerset County Council is launching a £500,000 fund to support strategically significant businesses badly affected by Covid-19 and successive lockdowns.

The scheme – Somerset Business Restart and Recovery Programme – is designed to provide support via a business grant to those businesses/organisations that can show they need extra financial support. Up to £50,000 will be available to anchor events and organisations that are fundamental to the success of other businesses in the wider economy.

These could be organisations that often did not fit neatly into Government Covid support programmes such as multi-purpose venues, heritage attractions, and food/craft events showcasing local produce that attract local people as well as visitors. Although Covid-related restrictions have eased, many businesses are still facing a tough uphill climb on the road to recovery.

The fund opens for applications tomorrow, Wednesday 11 August, with a closing date of 3 September. A dedicated webpage Somerset Recovery Fund hosts relevant information, guidance notes and frequently asked questions. This is the first of the support programmes being launched with more opening for applications in the coming weeks.”

“The past 18 months have been extremely hard for businesses in. POPULAR END OF LIFE TRAINING RETURNS DUE TO DEMAND FROM CARE PROFESSIONALS

A training seminar described by care professionals as ‘empowering’ and ‘informative’ is taking place again on Wednesday 15 September due to popular demand. The end-of-life care planning training course from Bristol Memorial Woodlands, in partnership with training provider Gentle Dusk, is aimed at care professionals and can be accessed for free via Zoom. End of Life Care and Bereavement expert and founding director of Gentle Dusk, Mireille Hayden, will lead the training which is open to care home staff and managers and other care workers who work with families every day. She said: “The programme of bereavement and end-of-life care workshops I have been delivering with Bristol Memorial Woodlands have proved extremely popular and we are now receiving calls from local care homes to book more dates. “Front-line staff and leaders have really appreciated the supportive programme which opens up conversations and provides staff with greater understanding and confidence in addressing the issues around these taboo subjects.

“Bristol Memorial Woodlands started these workshops as a way to connect with others in the end-of-life sector and they are fast becoming not only a funeral venue but a leading voice in the death and dying community.” Bristol Care Homes has already provided its staff with the training. Tania Bartholomew, Group Care Quality Manager, said: “Gathering information about our residents’ end of life plan is a really important part of what our care staff do. “This training explains the importance of knowing residents’ wishes, sharing those wishes with the right people and ensuring they are carried out with dignity.” Bristol Memorial Woodlands is a 100-acre site in Alveston offering environmentally-friendly woodland burials. Trees and wild flowers are planted around the plots where loved ones are laid to rest and the area is managed by a charitable trust to ensure it will be open forever for future generations to visit. If you would like further information or to book a training programme please contact Ella Abbott - ella@memorialwoodlands.com.

For more information about our work, training “The half-day session is free and organisations and events please visit www.gentledusk.org. or individuals can sign up and tune in virtually. uk and www.memorialwoodlands.com Previous attendees have said the skills learnt were helpful in their day-to-day work and provided a positive outlook on 32

This week’s movies previews Based on the true story of Greville Wynne (Cumberbatch), a British businessman who helped the CIA and MI6 penetrate the Soviet nuclear program during the Cold War, THE COURIER is a tale of bravery and heroic self-sacrifice. With no prior espionage experience and working under constant threat of discovery, Wynne was the CIA’s contact for Oleg Penkovsky, a top Soviet military official codenamed “Ironbark.” Wynne’s main objective: travel in and out of Moscow to retrieve sensitive military information from Penkovsky while maintaining the illusion that he’s an ordinary businessman selling steel manufacturing parts. Wynne and Penkovsky’s unlikely partnership provided the crucial intel that ended the Cuban missile crisis and averted a potential World War III. The stakes could not be higher in this story of personal risk, friendship and global triumph, seen through the eyes of a noble civilian unexpectedly caught in the middle of one of the greatest international conflicts to date. In Twentieth Century Studio’s epic adventure-comedy “Free Guy,” a bank teller who discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world video game decides to become the hero of his own story…one he rewrites himself. Now in a world where there are no limits, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way… before it is too late.

When their biggest rival, Humdinger, becomes Mayor of nearby Adventure City and starts wreaking havoc, Ryder and everyone’s favourite heroic pups kick into high gear to face the challenge head on. While one pup must face his past in Adventure City, the team finds help from a new ally, the savvy dachshund Liberty. Together, armed with exciting new gadgets and gear, the PAW Patrol fights to save the citizens of Adventure City! Joining the PAW Patrol in their thrilling first big screen adventure are members from the original series’ cast along with Iain Armitage, Marsai Martin, Yara Shahidi, Kim Kardashian West, Randall Park, Dax Shepard, with Tyler Perry and Jimmy Kimmel and introducing Will Brisbin.

Three fantastic projects are in full swing Bristol Young Heroes Awards The Bristol Young Heroes Awards aim to shine a light on the fantastic work of the young people in Bristol. Nominations have closed and judging is complete as we are now less than eight weeks away from the awards ceremony itself. This year we have 10 Categories, including our brand new Covid Hero Category which is to acknowledge and appreciate a young person who has gone above and beyond during the pandemic. We have an amazing cohort of finalists. Make sure to keep an eye out on our Twitter and Facebook page for the announcements for each category. We are working hard to put on the best event that Bristol is yet to see, and our Carnival themes awards night which celebrates the 10th Annual Awards ceremony will be one to remember. Keep the 1st October free to come along or stream it online (thanks to our streaming partners UWE Bristol) for a night you won’t forget. We’ll update you in the next e-newsletter about how you can sign up to this event. Bristol Together Championships With the School year over our team have had a blast working with Year 5 students from all across Bristol doing training sessions and tournaments for these fantastic young footballers. The Bristol Together Championships program aims to build a bridge across social stigmas and equal opportunities for all young people. 38

But the fun isn’t over yet for this season. The highly anticipated festival in September provides an opportunity for all the students we have worked with to come together once more to celebrate their hard work and achievements with a day full of fun and football! Break Free On top of our other two projects, over the holidays Community of Purpose comes together with Youth Moves to fight back on holiday hunger & holiday boredom. This summer we have four weeks of free food, fun and activities for children aged 8-12 to enjoy in South Bristol. We have had so much fun already supporting and working with these children to ensure they have a holiday filled with excitement and as many sandwiches as they can eat. Our team alongside Youth Moves have done a fantastic job so far providing sports, dancing, crafts, cooking, and have teamed up with other companies such as Whitchurch Dance Studio and Knowle West Media Centre to make this program even better! The best part is that we have three more weeks of engaging these brilliant young people, to make a difference to their lives. Want to get involved with any of our projects? Ofsted Joy for Professional Apprenticeships Following the recent A-Level and GCSE Results days on the 10th and 12th of August, one local training provider is not only helping young people take their first step on the career ladder, but also celebrating huge success in their recent Ofsted inspection. Professional Apprenticeships was founded five years ago by two former apprentices Adam Rooke and Carina Bush, the company delivers apprenticeships in Business, Digital Marketing, IT and various Management Qualifications. They currently support hundreds of employers and apprentices throughout the South West. In 2017 the Government introduced a new register for Apprenticeship Training in England, to raise the quality of training and support. All new providers on this register would receive a monitoring visit to ensure they are meeting the government's expectations in three areas. These areas are Leadership and Management, Quality of Training and the safeguarding of apprentices. Providers are graded in each as insufficient progress, reasonable progress or significant progress. Professional Apprenticeships achieved what very few Providers have, they scored Significant Progress in all three areas with some extremely complimentary feedback in the publicly published report. Amongst other things, Ofsted said:

Founder and Director Adam Rooke said: “Having been apprentices ourselves, we can appreciate the impact that a well-planned and delivered apprenticeship can have on a person’s life. We have continually driven to better and service and. We are ecstatic to have received this result”. With such a difficult year for everyone, young people Taking GCSE and A-Levels have been hit particularly hard. Professional Apprenticeships are offering CV support, interview skills and have vacancies across the region. Carina summarises the feelings of the whole team, “We are extremely proud to have been recognised for the hard work and dedication we have put into providing an excellent service to both our apprentices and employers. This will allow us to change more people's lives”.

Email: Info@professionalapprenticeships. “Staff work closely with employers to co.uk for more information. identify their requirements for apprenticeships. The Cider Box opens its second Bristol site at Wapping Wharf The Cider Box will open its second site in Bristol next week, bringing shelves of modern craft cider from the finest producers internationally and award-winning wares from local cidermakers to Wapping Wharf. Landing on Thursday, 19th August, The Cider Box's new home will be within CARGO 2, Wapping Wharf's popular hub of converted shipping containers, housing an array of independent shops, restaurants, cafes and more. The Cider Box promises fridges full of cans and bottles of fine fermented juice alongside kegs pouring the freshest cider in Bristol, served cold and sparkling to take away, made a hop, skip and jump away at its St Philip's site. Seasonal specialities will include mouth-watering cider slushies all summer long, and as the nights close in and the skies darken, hot spiced cider will be the order of the day. The focus will be on small batch, not-from-concentrate, freshly pressed cider with no added nasty bits. The unit at CARGO 2 will also feature a small tasting table for group tasting sessions, with collaborations planned with other Wapping Wharf businesses. Dan Heath, founder of The Cider Box, said: "We're tremendously excited to open up in Wapping Wharf; our second site in Bristol alongside our St Philip's Tap Room, working with brilliant producers of the finest cider we can lay our hands on, and sharing our findings with our wonderful customers.

We have ciders from upstate New York, Malmo/Sweden and the finest Normandy juices alongside regional favourites from Herefordshire and Somerset, and we cannot wait to pop open a bottle or two and share the juice." The Cider Box was started in 2013 with the aim of bringing freshly pressed and fermented juice to the towns and cities of the UK, on a crusade against industrially produced drinks masquerading as cider. Stuart Hatton, managing director at Umberslade, the developer of Wapping Wharf, said: "A big welcome to The Cider Box. It's brilliant that they have chosen to expand their business, off the back of their successful St Philip's Tap Room site, by opening a new venture at Wapping Wharf. Their modern, innovative cider sourced from local and international producers is sure to go down a treat among visitors to our growing harbourside community." The Cider Box will be taking the unit formerly home to Loop Massage, which is relocating from CARGO 2 to a bigger unit on the ground floor of Hope Quay along Rope Walk, also at Wapping Wharf. Wapping Wharf is in the heart of Bristol's historical and cultural quarter, with its treelined pedestrian and cycle route, Gaol Ferry Steps, providing an important connection between south Bristol to the city centre. Now home to over 40independent businesses, many of which are based within CARGO, Wapping Wharf is home to some of the city's best independent restaurants, shop, cafes and lifestyle businesses. 47
