From DG’s Desk CA Ravikiran Kulkarni DG 2018-2019

Dear Fellow Rotarians Greetings ! I have to apologize at the very outset for bringing out this issue of PROHASATAN – GML a bit late as everyone in my Office including myself was overburdened with the Income Tax Return filing about which all of you are aware of! The month of September 2018 is celebrated as LITERACY month and I am sure all of you will enjoy and article contributed by a person to whom all of know us a TEACHER FOR LIFE TIME – none other than PDG Bazil D’s Souza. I had an occasion to visit the Silver Jubilee Celebrations function of the Rotary School managed by R C Hubli East which was started with a meagre strength of les than 25 Students and now takes care of 1200 Students! The month of August 2018 was the Membership Month and all of us enjoyed a nice treat about WHY WE MUST GROW from PDG Bansi Dhurandhar of RID 3131 in VISTAR – ATHE Membership development Seminar on 19th August at Kolhapur. I will be taken in right perspective by all of you if I say that 19th August 2018 marked a special day in the history of our District as we organized a Hand On Training Workshop of Global Grants–TANTRA wherein about 50 participants participated and learnt the nitty-gritties of Global Grants from inception to submission of Final Report. Our District is blessed with the rich treasure of the committed and dedicated Rotarians and I am happy to share with you all that PDG Dr.Rajan Deshpande has been conferred with the highest award in the field of Medicine – DR B C ROY AWARD which will be conferred on him at the hands of President of India very soon. On behalf of all of us let us congratulate PDG DR Rajan Deshpande which is friend and mentor to many of us. Regards Yours in Rotary CA Ravikiran Kulkarni DG 2018-2019

Friends, we are glad to release the 3rd GML of the year on the day of two important Rotary functions- Only the 9th Skin Bank of India opened by R.C. Sangli & the Leadership Seminar on 16th September 201 hosted by R.C. Sangli.. This issue includes an article about this Skin Bank. It also includes an article related to current Rotary month i.e. Basic Education & Literacy Month, by PDG Basil Desouza. Coming to the review of August issue of Rotary News, the most impacting news is of a single TRF gift of Rs. 100 crores by D. Ravishankar, President of R.C. Bangalore Orchards. This is the second highest donation, next only to Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation! A builder by profession with humble roots, he has already done projects from building old age homes in Karnataka to school in the North East for children of drug addicts infected with HIV. The issue describes about the Toronto convention attended by over 25000 Rotarians. Toronto has been a host now for the fifth time. It was declared at the conference that the year raised a record 372.6 million for the Rotary Foundation. TRF Trusty chair Paul Netzel also referred to TRF’s ambitious aim to build an endowment fund of two billion dollars by 2025. Five DGs feature in the ‘Meet your Governors’ section - Pinky Patel (D 3066), Shashi Sharma (D 3141), K Rajagopalan (D 3212), RVN Kannan (D 3000), and Ashes Ganguly (D 3142). There is an article about R.C. Bombay Hanging Garden’s water wheel project. Water wheel is an innovative gadget which helps to reduce the hardships of a lot of women who need to carry water on their heads for long distances. Coming to our district, the article about Literacy Focus mentions Rtn. Kishor Lulla from R.C. Sangli as a star sponsor of Teach & WINS. The issue also commends R.C. Belgaum Midtown for the Lung check-up camp for the traffic police in Belgaum. I am told by the software people that the August issue had 570 hits making the viewership about 10%. Not bad, but we would like to see more viewership. I sincerely appeal to all Rotarians to go through the issue, send suggestions, articles and make it a genuine pulse of our district.

Article on Literacy by Rtn. Bazil D'souza - DG 2007-08

More than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. That’s 17 percent of the world’s adult population. Literacy initiatives in India Aim of literacy is to eradicate illiteracy by imparting functional literacy to non-literates. Literacy does not mean to make everybody just self reliant in three R's- reading, writing and arithmetic only, but also to make them aware of the development issues affecting the society. The target group is people between the age of 15 and 35. National Literacy Mission has been established in India in 1988. The National Literacy Mission (NLM) has two flagship programmes- Total literacy programmes and Post literacy Programme through which it gives shape to its aims. But with the revitalization of National Literacy Mission Programme on 30th September 1999, both the campaigns have come under one single project: 'Literacy Campaigns an Operation Restoration'. The initiation of total literacy campaigns by the National Literacy Mission has achieved due recognisition also. The UN agency-UNESCO in year 1999 conferred upon it UNESCO Noma Literacy Prize. It also received appreciation of the jury for the teaching learning material produced by it and for the voice raised by it to make quality primary education in schools. Rotary India Initiative The Rotary India Literacy Mission is an initiative of Rotary South Asia Society for Development and Cooperation. RILM’s objectives are Rotary Total literacy and Quality Education in India. RILM India Literacy Mission has designed a comprehensive program “T-E-A-C-H” where : T - Teacher Support E - E-learning A - Adult Literacy C - Child Development H - Happy School

Each of these programs has a specific focus and is interlinked with each other in achieving the common goal of bringing total literacy and improving the learning outcomes of primary education, in various parts of the country. Understanding the enormity of the task, we have decided to adopt and implement through T-E-AC-H, a strategy of meaningful cooperation with all actors in the field, by forging strong partnerships with Government, Corporate, National/State specific Non-Governmental organizations as well as international organizations working in various segments of this countrywide endeavor. Literacy initiative by United Nation International Literacy Day, adopted by the United Nations 50 years ago to promote literacy in the third world, is observed annually on September 8. The day was first celebrated on October 26, 1966 -- a year after the UN adopted the idea at World Conference of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy held in Tehran. In 2015, International Literacy Day was adopted as part of the UN’s sustainable development goals program in 2015. Theme This year’s theme ‘Literacy and Skills Development’ explores integrated approaches that simultaneously support the development of literacy and skills, to ultimately improve people’s lives and work and contribute to equitable and sustainable societies. The day focuses on skills and competencies required for employment, careers and livelihoods, particularly technical and vocational skills along with transferable and digital skills. Sustainable Development Goal 4 has as one of its targets ensuring all young people achieve literacy and numeracy and that adults who lack these skills are given the opportunity to acquire them. International Literacy Day is celebrated to promote the human attention towards literacy and their rights for social and human development. The day is also celebrated towards getting continuous education and understand their responsibilities for the family, society and the country. The day is also celebrated having special themes for each year and programs are conducted all over the world. “ When you teach somebody how to read, they have that for a lifetime. It ripples through the community, one by one.“
