My grandfather 'Pappy' Wise had a cotton farm a few miles, 5 or 6, out of Waxahachie, Texas and one night when I was about 7 or 8 years old a great light appeared in the sky. It was so great that speculation about the end of the world was bruited about among the grown folks at the farm. As it turns out a straw stack had caught fire on an adjoining farm and some small tool sheds and part of a fence was burned. In a letter from March 20, 1912 Sandzen wrote to his brother Gustaf: 'My paintings have, to tell the truth, aroused a great deal of attention. They are not, however, if one reads the reviews 'sensational' - even if the color usage is a little individual. They are simply nature studies. WEDGE
'Normanno Wedge' (Circa 1980.)
This important cast iron maquette, small preliminary study for a monumental sculpture, was precursor to the seven-foot tall Western Washington University Campus installation of the same name.Beverly Pepper mentions casting, 'a very small, forged steel sculpture' in her verbal transcript discussing the evolution of the Normanno Wedge at WWU. Pepper relates, that this is a seminal work for her, which emphasizes verticality as well as integrating the earth and sky. 'Positioned on top of a mound, the wedge shape creates a type of urban altar.'The artist goes on to say, 'Normanno Wedge is part of a series of sculpture based on tools and allowing their metamorphosis into something else. The embryonic state of the tool evolves into something beyond a tool. This began when I was working in foundries and factories and became involved with the beauty of the instruments I used. As a work in process, it is inevitably seductive. With each new mutation, you wonder if you're finished when you actually need to push on to a final form.'I used wedges in making some works to split the sculptures and create a space between -- to keep them engaged in a dialogue. Then, the wedges themselves invaded my mind. This began with the first wedge I created -- a very small, forged steel sculpture, made with a drop forge. It was initially difficult because I felt I needed to do the forging myself, though I was not physically capable of manipulating the forge and maneuvering huge weights of steel. At that point, I decided to shift to casting since it would free me to work directly in iron. The originals could be made out of more malleable material.' She continues, 'I call WWU's sculpture Normanno because the man who owned its foundry in Terni (Italy) was named Normanno. Still, it took a lot of persuasion to convince Signor Normano Bernadini to cast that wedge. Eventually, we became great friends and did a lot of work together. Other foundries followed -- my cast iron sculptures made in an industrial foundry, not an art foundry. Industrial casts are coarser and relate more to the concept of the tool.'This rare and important 19-inch tall preliminary study is not signed. It comes from a private Kansas collection, obtained form the Moline Illinois estate of a John Deere Company executive.

Each portrait has something all its own to offer, a dozen opportunities for amusing and insightful impact, thirteen when considering the work as a whole. And besides being an interesting statement on diversity, there are other layers of curiosity, like the member of the panel who appears to wear a mask, or the jurors whose heads are shaped more like an egg than almost all of Raymer's figures (though he did paint a lot of eggs). This painting is a great example of an object that, 'speaks to you.'*Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery, 'Variations of the Vision...The Art of Lester Raymer,' Traditional Fine Arts Organization, 2000, accessed 28 Feb 2023, https://tfaoi.org/aa/10aa/10aa445.htm.

Buche's and an obituary for the brave painter who died on August 13, 1917) whose entire artistic estate is now being sold at the Dorotheum in Vienna thanks to a generous decision by his widow Kathe to support young aspiring artists. Jos. Buche, whose name was held in high regard in all circles of art experts, was born in 1848 as the son of the history painter Joj. Buche was born in Vienna, went to the Vienna Academy at the age of 13 and developed rapidly under the influence of Professor Wurzinger in terms of accuracy, fresh, rich coloring and individualization. At the beginning of the 1970s, Buche moved to Meran with his lovely young wife and here he found a broad field for his restless diligence. The character heads that come from this time and which he all matted from nature belong to the best that was ever offered in terms of character and accuracy of the individual. Many landscape sketches and genre pictures also date from the time of the Meran stay. Buche also distinguished himself as a portraitist and was one of the most sought-after masters of his time, who was supported to the best of their ability by the imperial family and many patrician families.' Fruit baskets and centerpieces, many decorated with grape cluster motifs, began to appear on the tables of 18th and early 19th century British sophisticates at the turn of the 19th century. Silver grape shears appeared at about this same time. 'Vintage' pattern table wares with grape motifs remained popular through the Victorian era and silver articles of this type are still made. But hammered sterling silver baskets of modernist design intended to hang clusters of grapes seem to be exclusive to the innovative Danish silversmiths of the 20th century, and quite rare. The example offered here from the workshops of Georg Jensen, and a similar but different design by them, appear to be the only examples made to suspend grape clusters for display on the table. This scarce example is stamped number 542 and signed Georg Jensen 925S along with the maker's mark used only from 1915 to 1925. The mark of DESSIN GP attributes the work to designer Gustav Pedersen (1895 - 1972) who was appointed foreman of Georg Jensen's hollowware department in 1917 and designed many of Jensen's hollowware classics.Of this craftsmanship, the French art critic Pierre Lahalle wrote, 'It is by means of a discrete hammering of the smooth surfaces that George Jensen's work achieves its incomparable beauty; this bright vibration in the silver subdues it's excessive gloss, removes every thought of mechanical labor, reveals the hand of the worker Found nearly black in the family home, the surface of this basket was only lightly polished to display the fine pattern of hammer markings overall. The bottom rim is engraved JOSEPHINE BIRD HALL - 1938 and comes directly from the collection of Josephine Bird Hall (1888 - 1948), descended through the family to the current owner.
Measures 12.5 x 9.5 x 10 inches, weighs 37.75 ozt. Very good original condition throughout, only very lightly polished by hand after being found nearly black in the estate. The iconic early design by Georg Jensen is found here with an unusual lid, cover, with decorative orb and ballcapped tendrils. What follows is an excerpt from Janet Drucker's book, George Jensen A Tradition of Splendid Silver, published by Schiffer Publishing Limited, 1997:'A silver bowl, number 19, designed around 1910 was another stunning creation. In this composition, a deep bowl with notched rim thrust upward from a base by a number of vertical leaf-like forms, thus creating the illusion that the heavy bowl is hovering weightlessly. This piece is frequently called the Louvre Bowl because an example is in the collection of the Louvre museum in Paris. Jensen's pride in this bowl is evidenced by the fact that it was frequently featured in the advertisements his firm placed in the leading American, Danish, English, French, and German decorative-arts magazines of the period.'Of this craftsmanship the French art critic Pierre Lahalle wrote, 'It is by means of a discrete
