Message from Kevin and plays, and every team in the league is still undefeated in that season. Hope springs eternal that this is the season my team wins the Super Bowl.
August has always been one of my favorite months, and right now feels a bit like August to me. No, it’s not because of Calgary’s balmy weather. It’s because I’m an NFL fan, and August is when NFL teams hold their training camps in preparation for the upcoming season. Those training camps are the best! It’s the first chance fans get to see new players who’ve joined the team during the off-season. The coaches use the time to prepare players with new strategies

So, with our own DIRTT Partner Camp right around the corner, I’m feeling that same kind of excitement and eager anticipation at what’s to come. As I said on our quarterly earnings call earlier this week, Partners will absolutely continue to be integral to DIRTT’s go-to-market strategy. They are essential to our success. For this reason, I want our whole company—you included—to understand what’s happening with our Partners in terms of how DIRTT supports them. The more we’re connected, the better it is for our entire company. Our immediate and ongoing goal is to forge even stronger

relationships with our Partners as we help them grow their own businesses. Our upcoming Partner Camp is about exactly that. This year’s camp is in Scottsdale, AZ, from November 4th – 7th. DIRTT Sales Reps are attending, too. The camp has more than 35 sessions that Partners and Reps can choose from to fill their agendas, so each person can learn more about the things they need to learn more about, in order to grow. As I’m one of the new “players” at this year’s camp, I’m really excited to meet
more people associated with DIRTT, our fellow team members, and of course more of our critically important Partners. (I’ll be happy to talk football too, should they wish. Go Cowboys!). My hope is that Camp is an excellent chance for us to learn how we can best work with our Partners, and how we can be the best we can be as we prep for our upcoming season. I’ll look forward to updating you again after Camp. We have a great team and I am confident we’ll win in the marketplace, this year and every year moving forward.

DIRTT U Live: Fun and learning in the mountains Teams of DIRTTbags from across the globe gathered in Calgary and Kananaskis in October for a week of learning and skill building. It was a great opportunity to connect with fellow DIRTTbags who are often in other locations. There was a lot of training and learning to go around. Plus, we had a bit of fun while we were at it!
Friday morning, 285 DIRTT U participants all headed out to Kananaskis. The ‘Nitty Gritty DIRTTbags’ band – made up of some very musically-talented DIRTTbags – woke everyone up with some lively morning music. Geoff Krause kicked off the morning, helping us find our moon shot. Keynote speaker Linda Edgecombe energized the room. She got us motivated to make changes and set our own lives up for our best success.

The afternoon was filled with some great team building. The Amazing Chase had teams scurrying all over Kananaskis village, working together to complete challenges and race for the win. Then, Titanium Chef peaked our competitive spirit on Friday night, in a live edition of the famous television cooking show of a similar name. Dozens of teams competed to cook three courses and win the hearts (and palettes) of the judges. Participants got to enjoy a selection of activities on Saturday, organized by our Client Relations team. Some crawled through tight caves. Some ate their way through the Banff Springs castle. Others hiked or relaxed at the spa. But everyone enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the Kananaskis mountains.

Saturday night was Diner en Blanc. It was DIRTT’s take on a worldwide event where people gather, all dress in white attire, to enjoy a great evening. The concept originated in Paris 30 years ago as a way to celebrate the French art of living. These days, more than 110,000 people participate annually in Diner en Blanc events around the globe. In true DIRTT fashion we kept the fun going with a dance party. Big kudos to DJ Justin Kim for a stellar performance. The team at the Pomeroy Kananaskis Lodge said we were a great group and are looking forward to having us back.

Sustainability in action:
Supporting a circular economy and limiting our waste Did you know the average North American produces approximately 1,563 lbs of waste every year? This waste includes anything from clothing and electronics, to packaging and food leftovers. With a total population of 579 million, this means North Americans are producing over 452 million tons of waste in their households annually! In addition to these numbers, there’s the problem of construction waste. In North America, 548 million tons of construction waste was generated in 2015. What can we do about these staggering numbers? The global movement to reduce waste has gained a huge amount of traction. There’s an emphasis on creating a circular economy – an alternative to the traditional consumption cycle of producing, using and disposing. The goal of a circular economy is simple: keep resources in use for as long as possible, repurposing them over and over again to gain maximum value during their lifespan. DIRTT ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS | Diggin’ It | October 2018
Here at DIRTT, we’ve always recognized the importance of doing our part to reduce waste and limit our impact on the environment; from sustainable waste practices to lean manufacturing, and everything in between. Here are some key ways we’re working to promote a circular economy in the world of DIRTT: Donating materials Although recycling is superior to throwing out materials, reusing is even better! We strive to reuse when possible as it’s the most effective at eliminating waste. We regularly donate material offcuts from our factories to organizations so they can be repurposed in new ways. Thanks to the flexible nature of DIRTT, we also donate some of our solutions for reuse in new spaces. This helps keep both materials and solutions from being thrown away, lengthening the lifespan of these items. After all, statistics show construction waste takes up a whopping 40% of North 8

American landfills! We’ve got the track record to back up the difference we’re making. Here are some recent organizations we’ve donated material offcuts or used solutions to: • Rustic Home Designs • SAIT University Enactus group • Willow Park school • Sir John Franklin School

At DIRTT, we like to work with people who also care about sustainability – from our clients and partners, to our suppliers. We’ve been working closely with our suppliers recently to set up return programs for packaging materials. This keeps select materials

in use and out of the landfill and recycling streams. Take our insulation as an example. The offcuts from our factory are returned to our suppliers to be used in new batches of insulation. In any given batch of insulation that DIRTT receives, about 10% of it is DIRTT offcuts. In addition, two different components of our thermofoil packaging are returned to our vendors for reuse. Our Savannah factory works with their glass suppliers to return and reuse glass protectors used in shipping. All of DIRTT’s old electronics are also sent to a company who repairs them to resell at a discount. These sorts of initiatives help keep materials in use, fueling a circular economy.
Reusing materials We know sustainability is important to our clients as well, so our DIRTT packaging is reusable (cookies and dust caps). Our Phoenix factory is also equipped to have reusable rags washed in our facilities. By washing and reusing our rags, we extend the life and reduce our waste. It’s an alternative to purchasing throwaway cloths. And, the rags in our Calgary factories are repurposed from old clothing scraps. That’s why you can sometimes see a logo from a clothing brand on them! We also say no to one-use food containers. Our kitchens are fully equipped with reusable dishware for all employees to limit waste. When needed for DIRTTbags on the go, we have fully composable take-out options. Good wood practices DIRTT’s new nesting machines in our Calgary factory allow us to optimize MDF even more than before, helping reduce our waste factor. Plus, there’s always one-offs where we’re teaming

DIRTT ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS | Diggin’ It | November 2018
Here are 10 easy first steps to reducing your waste at home: 1. Understand what you are throwing into the garbage – Kitchen waste? Snack wrappers? Clothes? This will allow you to figure out where to focus your sustainable initiatives.

NOVEMBER 2018 Diggin’ It
2. BYOB – bring your own bag. Switch to reusable grocery and produce bags. 3. Eliminate single use wraps like tinfoil and saran wrap, and stick with reusable containers. 4. Use a cloth or towel for cleaning instead of paper towels. 5. Say no to plastic water bottles and paper mugs. Carry reusable water bottle and coffee containers. 6. Donate your old clothes and buy from used stores. 7. Eliminate the plastic straw. If you love having a straw, invest in a reusable one!

8. Plan your groceries ahead of time and meal prep to make sure you’re eating your leftovers. Use your compost bin when you have to throw out food. 9. Check out a library instead of buying a new book. You’ll likely only read it once! 10. Make your own cleaning products – in a reusable container. Vinegar and water make a great simple cleaner. Goodbye mockups, hello ICEreality impressed. So much so, that right then and there they began planning to bring up their high-level executives to our headquarters. “They have to see this.”
We all know how powerful our ICEreality experience is during the construction process – but sometimes witnessing our clients’ ah-ha moments further puts it into perspective. An experience that took place in our Calgary virtual reality lab a few weeks ago is a prime example. Tech GIANTS (we’d name them, but we can’t) were visiting DIRTT HQ to discuss a project on the horizon. We input their design into our virtual world and they began to walk around the space together as a group – pointing out and discussing design details. “I’ve never seen anything like this,” one mumbled in amazement as he paced around our lab in a virtual reality headset, taking it all in. Needless to say, they were DIRTT ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS | Diggin’ It | October 2018
What got this group so excited was realizing that they could use our technology to eliminate their large spend on a physical mockup of their space. Traditionally, this was standard practice to ensure everyone shared that same vision for what the end result would look like. They realized that by going virtual with our ICE software, they could achieve certainty on their project in the same way that a mockup would provide. Our ICEreality route, however, would be significantly cheaper, faster and more sustainable. It’s moments like this – where tech leaders validate what we’re doing – that we realize the true value we bring to the world of construction. And ultimately, the positive impact we have on the lives of our clients. Thank you for the role you play in delivering this exceptional construction experience. 13

The Wounded Warrior Dog Project saves lives of local veterans in Savannah Watching Stan Perkins on the production floor at DIRTT Savannah, you wouldn’t think he’s different from any other dedicated DIRTTbag. However, like many other “overachievers” in the DIRTT family, it’s what Stan does with his time away from DIRTT that might surprise you some. Stan is the founder and CEO of The Wounded Warrior Dog Project, based in Savannah, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides American military veterans suffering from PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with a custom-trained PTSD-specialized service dog – free of charge - to help DIRTT ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS | Diggin’ It | October 2018
them survive and cope with the stress of living with chronic PTSD.
Stan Perkins in Assembly at DIRTT
Stan went into the Army when he was 17 years old. As Stan says, it was “something I always wanted to do, I don’t know why”. He then went to Airborne School and was enlisted for 14 years, eventually becoming an Army Ranger at Ft. Benning in Georgia. He served combat tours in South America and Iraq and was honorably discharged at the end of his service term. He then spent some time in college where learned AutoCAD design. Stan started Custom CAD Design and worked on homes in Savannah at Southbridge, 14
NOVEMBER 2018 Diggin’ It
The Landings and Tybee. When the real estate market crashed in 2008, he went to work in the engineering areas at Gulfstream and LMI Aerospace before joining DIRTT in September 2016. Stan founded the Wounded Warrior Dog Project (WWDP) in Savannah in 2015, after learning a devastating fact about the fate of combat veterans in the U.S. “We’re here for ‘the 22,’” Stan says. “It’s all about those 22.” Stan is referring to the 22 combat veterans who take their lives every day due to PTSD. “They come back serving our country with injury that’s mental, not physical. You don’t see the devastation in their minds from looking at them, but 22 of these veterans take their lives EVERY SINGLE DAY – and that’s the minimum,” Stan says. “We are here for those 22, the vets on the high-risk, critical list, in hopes they can have a real chance to survive.” Stan also learned that therapists believe, no matter how much human support and interaction these critical vets receive, there is still a high risk of suicide – despite intensive therapy. “Therapists don’t know why, but for the DIRTT ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS | Diggin’ It | November 2018
very critically-injured vets, counseling does little good. They can go in and talk, sure, but they’re still sitting at home playing Russian roulette every night.” Stan pauses in the conversation here and, with emotions on the surface, he continues. “One of my very, very best friends didn’t pull the trigger, but he got in the car and drove himself into a tree.” Stan says the friend survived, but he’s a paraplegic from the neck down. As an Iraq combat veteran, Stan says he’s considered ‘successfully deprogrammed,’ because he’s not thinking about hurting himself – or other people – every day and he’s not ‘still in the war’ every day. He says many more service veterans aren’t so lucky and the demand – and need – for service dogs is huge. Yet, for even the most high-risk veterans, getting a trained service dog involves a long wait – 18 months to 2 years, anywhere in the country. “We triage those on the waiting list – there are many who want service dogs but we only provide dogs to those who are high risk. You’ve got to be one of the 22 a day.”
15
NOVEMBER 2018 Diggin’ It
“I started WWDP because I understand the value of the relationship of bonding with a dog – it does something no human interaction can do.” Stan gets wistful when he says, “we can tell when friends and family members are looking at us funny, like, hey, he’s not the same.” People can’t help themselves, even ones who love you. But, Stan says, “a dog can give us a sense of normality in a crazy-seeming world. That dog, he doesn’t care about all that. He just wants to love you unconditionally. He doesn’t judge you and he’s there to support and help you.”
Stan says “therapists know this, too,” and along with the many reports of how service dogs are helping veterans, he said WWDP just came to him. Stan comes by dog training naturally. He and his cousin began training dogs in Black Creek, Georgia when he was in his early 20s, just for fun. They had a DIRTT ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS | Diggin’ It | November 2018
bright idea to go to competitions and in his first one, he won 4th place with his Rottweiler. He then went on to compete and win prizes for several years. When that dog passed, he got his first Labrador Retriever, named “Champ,”. Stan continued to hone his craft and began winning first place prizes in contests, including multiple large dog shows. He was hooked on training dogs, a passion that continues today with WWDP. When asked how WWDP “matches” dogs with vets, Stan says therapists recommend vets with the most urgent need for a service dog, if they want a dog. Stan says “some do, some don’t. And, we have to be concerned about the welfare of the dog because even if they want one, they aren’t necessarily going to take proper care of that dog. We have to take that into consideration. It’s a big undertaking to train the dogs – it’s 1-2 years of commitment and intense training, built on a foundation of absolute exceptional obedience with dogs from high-quality breeders.” WWPD does not train rescue dogs – “we’ve tried it, it
16
NOVEMBER 2018 Diggin’ It
doesn’t work. Many other organizations have also tried it without much success. It’s clear that for this kind of service, dogs of specific breeds from high quality blood lines are best.” “We need to be 100% certain from the very beginning that the dogs we train are going to be able to be trained at very high, specialized, levels,” says Stan, adding that the best success comes with dogs that are bred for both skill and temperament, like Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers. “German Shepherds are also smart but, typically, they are bred to be protective. A service dog is not a protection dog, it’s a dog that’s trained to do specific, customized tasks repeatedly,” Stan says. When pressed about using rescue dogs – again – Stan emphasizes, “We have to focus on success. As much as we may love our rescues,” he says, “Mutts don’t always get it done.” A fully-trained service dog requires $15,000 to $18,000 per dog, minimum. “We’re not out to raise millions of dollars a year, but our goal is to raise $30,000-$50,000 every year, which is not an easy task.” WWDP has Stan, DIRTT ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS | Diggin’ It | November 2018
who serves as CEO, as well as a CFO, a grant writer and 6+ volunteers. No one in the organization is paid, including Stan. “Every single dime that’s donated is used to train, feed, vet and transport dogs to training; we’re committed to ensure that all funds raised are for the sole purpose of providing that customtrained dog to that high-need veteran,” Stan promises. This is where Stan’s fellow DIRTTbags come in: DIRTT Savannah has chosen – unanimously – The Wounded Warrior Dog Project as the Fundraising Community Partner Organization for 2019, starting with our annual holiday donation drive on November 1st. DIRTTbags have committed to raise as much as we can to ensure WWDP can obtain, train and deliver the next service dog to a worthy veteran. As a bonus, Stan will allow DIRTTbags to name the newest graduate of WWDP in 2019! ALL DIRTTbags are invited to participate in our fundraising efforts for WWDP. If you’d like to donate, please check out the Wounded Warrior Dog Project website.

Coming Soon: Arab Health 2019 Once again, DIRTT is gearing up to participate in the largest healthcare expo in the Middle East with our Partner NMG. Arab Health 2019 will be here before we know it and preparations have recently been underway at our Calgary factory (6335). Each year at this event, we display how DIRTT can bring state-of-the-art healthcare interiors to life using a gamechanging approach to construction. Attendees of the Middle East’s most prestigious healthcare gathering get to experience the precision, quality and versatility of DIRTT by visiting our 3,600 sq. ft. display – built in an action-packed four days! DIRTT’s Arab Health booth is noteworthy for a variety of reasons. First off, we’re using the same timber, two-story structure for the fourth year in a row.
DIRTT ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS | Diggin’ It | October 2018
While other exhibitors tear down their booths year after year, only to put them in the landfill, we’re able to disassemble and store all of our solutions for reuse. This concept alone is a true testament to the sustainability and longevity of DIRTT and why we stand so different from the thousands of other exhibitors. While the timber foundation of the space stays consistent, we will be changing up the design and finishes to make this year’s space unique. This demonstrates how easy it is to adapt DIRTT spaces to meet new needs. For instance, one of the rooms within our display will be transformed into a pediatrics room – complete with aquarium graphics that act as distractions for child patients. All of the vignettes found in the heart of the display will also be updated with a fresh, new aesthetic.

Life in DIRTT SECOND DIRTT MAKER’S MARKET
Once again, DIRTT celebrated the entrepreneurs among us at the latest installment of the DIRTT Maker’s Market in Calgary. Entrepreneurs are constantly innovating, challenging the status quo and making people’s lives easier. We’re continuously encouraging our DIRTTbags and ICEcubes to spark their own ideas and keep their creative juices flowing at work – but their sweet side gigs deserve some attention as well! That’s why DIRTT hosts the Maker’s Market; a bazaar for DIRTTbags, by DIRTTbags.
Held at Lounge Night on October 18th, DIRTTbags, ICEcubes and their friends were invited to set up a booth and show off their creative side. Some of the stuff on offer? Custom quilts, homemade jams and treats, handmade millwork, and even bespoke jewelry created by a metalsmith. This second Maker’s Market was a big success and we look forward to hosting one again in the new year! Are you interested in participating in the next Maker’s Market? Contact the DIRTT Social HQ.

Flex gas myths… busted! “Flex Gas is cool but copper is forever!” This uninformed misperception shuts down fact-base conversation on the value propositions of DIRTT’s Flex Gas. Facility managers, decision makers, systems specialists and medical plumbers, current on latest technologies, understand how Flex Gas solves many of the challenges associated with this critical system. It’s natural that caution to embrace new and unknown solutions fosters resistance. Misperceptions fuel baseless risk aversion seeing weaknesses in valuable advancements where none exists. Declaration the static nature of “old technology” provides greater longevity is mistaken as fact. Copper is the “dry wall” of the med gas system. It can only be changed through demolition and reconstruction. Maintenance requires the shutdown of entire zones of rooms (5 to 20) for usually several days. The resulting loss of the use of these rooms represent a staggering loss, functionally and financially, to any organization. Infinitely safer in a seismic event, Flex Gas will provide life critical services DIRTT ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS | Diggin’ It | October 2018
when rigid systems have failed. While a building’s structure, walls and ceilings are engineered to resist the shear forces of an earthquake, water and gas lines rigidly connected to the building are the first systems to fail. Flex gas improves life safety when it’s needed most. And if damaged, the system can be brought back online in hours instead of days. 23
NOVEMBER 2018 Diggin’ It
Today’s owners and architects declare they want their medical facilities to last “100 years”. With the increasing pace of biotech evolution, changing demographics, and modification to services and acuity levels, there is only one way to meet that design goal. The basis of design must specify and incorporate systems that have the inherent behavior to readily accept change. Upgrading MEP systems, equipment, services, and configurations easily, quickly, inexpensively with minimal disruption is the very definition of DIRTT’s future-proofing behavior. Inescapably, every room with med gases gets a renovation, refresh, or upgrade long before Flex Gas requires any maintenance. Flex Gas offers so many valuable contributions it must receive priority as an early consideration for inclusion on any project focused on longevity, functional relevance, and ROI. DIRTT’s elimination of copper brazed solutions is part of our commitment to providing only innovative, fully adaptable technology. If a client insists on copper lines (and their planned obsolescence), then cut, piece, and install it on site with the other static, non-responsive systems that lower value and negatively impact operational costs. DIRTT ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS | Diggin’ It | November 2018
DIRTT Flex Gas: • Allows for the simple addition of new outlets without system shut down. Copper requires demolition and reconstruction of feed lines, a 24-hour pressure test with an independent inspector and recommissioning of the system before patients can be admitted and cared for in those rooms. • Does NOT require regular inspection or maintenance. • Offers an inherent safety automatic shut off for every outlet feed line. Copper does not. Simply disconnecting a hose stops the flow of gas to that outlet and eliminates the need for system shut down. • Flexible hoses are virtually impossible to penetrate, unlike fixed in place copper, a soft metal that’s easily punctured. Flex hoses resist leaks 5 times longer than the outlets they service. • Weathers a seismic event with greater structural integrity than copper lines offering critical systems when most needed. • Is easily accessible when maintenance is needed, requiring a few hours versus days of down time.

Joann Gonchar, Editor at Architectural Record
Joann Gonchar is the senior editor at Architectural Record. It’s one of the most influential journals in the architectural world. She doesn’t remember it, but Joann was the first to write about DIRTT for a major publication. She was the technology editor back in June 2005. Her opening line about the new upstart called DIRTT was, “Despite the rather unfortunate name…” Happily, she went on to applaud the power of ICE®.
DIRTT ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS | Diggin’ It | October 2018
Joann was in Calgary for the opening of the new public library. It’s been called one of the most interesting new buildings in the world. She asked her hosts at Tourism Calgary to leave some time so she could come see the DIRTT headquarters. When she arrived, I asked her why she made the time to come for a couple of hours during her very busy schedule and she said, “We’re hearing more and more about how prefab is changing the architectural industry and DIRTT has been a part of several stories we’re covering.”
The new Calgary Public Library opens Nov. 1, 2018
She busily took notes as we toured the Green Learning Centre and factory and then topped it off with a 2018 ICEreality experience. We’re looking forward to see what she writes 13 years later. 25
