sea & c ast Take a quick look at a map of South West Wales and it’s easy to pinpoint the Gower Peninsula and Tenby, at the start of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, but what about the bit in the middle? The gently curving 55 miles of Carmarthenshire coastline from Llanelli to Amroth, boasts villages, attractions, coves, beaches and an array of accommodation to suit every taste. 2

armarthenshire is home to an amazing variety of seashores, from the longest stretch of sand in Wales to beautiful estuaries and a traffic free - and highly successful coastal park.

C

To experience the beauty of Carmarthenshire’s coastline a visit to Laugharne is a must. As anyone who knows the place will tell you, there’s nowhere quite like Laugharne. The master of capturing its uniqueness in print was the writer and former resident Dylan Thomas, who wrote ‘Under Milk Wood’ in homage to his beloved Laugharne. West of Laugharne is a beach that even today is long enough to be used for land speed records. In the 1920’s Pendine Sands echoed to the roar of monster machines driven by Sir Malcolm Campbell and Welsh ace JG Parry Thomas. Nowadays, just sit back and soak up the surroundings; mess about in the

rock-pools or walk over the headland, which is the gateway to the Pembrokeshire Coastal National Park. Even Pendine can’t compete with the 7 mile stretch of sands at Cefn Sidan. The sense of space here is almost overpowering. Behind the soft rolling dunes is one of Wales’ top attractions. Pembrey Country Park has 500 acres filled with adventure playgrounds, crazy golf, cycle hire, pitch and putt and a 130 metre dry ski slope. Almost £30million has been spent on completely transforming the 14 mile strech of shoreline from Pembrey to just beyond Llanelli. The Millennium Coastal Park is a recreational and wildlife ribbon of revitalised harbours, traffic free cyclepaths, a championship golf course and it all ends at a high point with the WWT National Wetlands Centre Wales - an internationally important bird reserve on the mouth of the Loughour estuary.

the Gower and Carmarthen Bay. Sitting on the banks of the River Teifi, Newcastle Emlyn is full of rural charm with lots of independently-owned shops, cafes, pubs and of course a castle. Close by is Cenarth Falls, one of Wales’s first beauty spots.

9

Llandeilo is a classy county town and shopping hot spot, with an array of fashionable galleries and boutiques. Wander along the main street, popping in and out of the quaint little one-off shops such as ‘Toast’ and ‘Heavenly’ (gourmet ice cream). Counting the Prince of Wales amongst its inhabitants, Llandovery is jam-packed with historic inns, local craft shops, traditional pubs, cafes - a perfect base for exploring the rugged hills of the Brecon Beacons. A transformed town within the Millennium Coastal Park, Burry Port has a modern landscaped seafront that has brought new life to this historic port overlooking

One of Wales’s best-preserved medieval castles stands at the centre of Kidwelly, which sits on the Gwendraeth Estuary. Where Carmarthenshire meets Pembrokeshire you’ll find Whitland, with an important history celebrating the achievements of ‘Hywel Dda’, King of all Wales in the 10th Century. There’s plenty packed into the cute farming town of St Clears. A lively, bustling place with award winning family butchers whose tradition stretches back many years. Laugharne, the sleepy, timeless seaside town which provided the inspiration for Dylan Thomas’s ‘Under Milk Wood’ and where he lays buried.

An animated, friendly town, Llanelli is the largest in Carmarthenshire, with good shopping and a vibrant indoor market housing generations of family stalls. Located on the edge of the wild Black Mountain, Ammanford is an ideal base for exploring the stunning scenery and mountains.

Llanybydder is locally renowned for its rich trout and salmon fishing and was also a wool grading centre for a once thriving weaving industry. Look out for the famous monthly horse sales.

food & drink Sometimes the stresses and strains of everyday life take their toll and only the best will do. Fine food, excellent facilities, beautiful surroundings and stylish accommodation all combine to crown Carmarthenshire one of the top ‘get-away-from-it-all’ destinations in Wales.

et’s begin with breakfast. With so much farm-fresh produce around, we’re confident that you’ll enjoy some of the best breakfasts in Britain when you stay here. It’s not just breakfasts, of course. Succulent Welsh lamb, world-beating farmhouse cheeses, sweet Carmarthen ham, tender Welsh Black beef, melt-in-the-mouth sewin (the local name for sea trout) and home-grown vegetables are all part of a basket of local ingredients used in kitchens to produce the kind of food - nowadays christened as ‘Slow Food’ - that is meant to be savoured.

L

All styles are catered for too. You’ll find bistros, boutique hotels and gastropubs where the accent is on adventurous modern cuisine, cooked with a lighter touch. Farmhouses and country inns concentrate on more traditional fayre. Cafés and coffee shops serve delicious home-made treats like welshcakes and bara brith (a

crumbly fruit loaf) along with cappuccino or latte. With such inspiring surroundings, it’s not surprising that Carmarthenshire has long been a magnet for artists and craftspeople. Studios and workshops specialising in pottery, glassware, painting, sculpture and woodcarving are dotted across the county - and most extend a big welcome to visitors. To see it all under one roof go to The Gate Craft Centre, St Clears. (www.the-gate.org) Some craft traditions can be traced back hundreds of years. The clear, fast-flowing waters of the Teifi once powered countless woollen mills. A handful still remain, though the dynamic spirit of this industry lives on at the National Wool Museum, Drefach Felindre. (www.museumwales.ac.uk)

Freedom to do what you like, when you like If there’s one thing that makes a perfect holiday it’s the freedom to do what you like when you like. If you love the feeling of not being bound by set meal times and menus then self-catering in Carmarthenshire is for you. Our holiday cottages, barns and rural retreats are spacious, well-equipped and comfortable. Get a real feel for Welsh country life when you stay on a traditional working farm or take your pick of stunning seaside cottages and wake up to the sound of the ocean. It’s great value too. Going self-catering is fantastic for families as it means the children can run free without the worry of disturbing other guests and many places these days also allow well-behaved family pets. Go self-catering and see Carmarthenshire through the eyes of the locals. It will soon feel like a home from home.

Pamper Yourself Sometimes the stresses and strains of everyday life take their toll and only a quick-fix dose of pure indulgence in the very finest surroundings will do.That’s why Carmarthenshire has earned itself the reputation of being one of the coolest ‘escapefrom-it-all’ destinations in Wales. It’s the sheer choice that does it. Impressive country mansions, trendy town houses, stylish B&B’s or chic boutique hotels with five star splendour. Go for traditional, contemporary, rustic or swish - it really doesn’t matter because each offers that special personal touch. And then there’s the food. Escapees can expect the very best Carmarthenshire has to offer in fine dining during a weekend away from it all.

Caravan & Camping

Cool Camping There’s no better way to experience the great outdoors than by bringing your own accommodation along with you. And there’s nothing quite like going to sleep under the stars and waking with the dawn chorus to put you in tune with Mother Nature. If you’re thinking leaky tents, muddy fields and soggy sleeping bags then think again. Camping is officially back on the map as a cool holiday choice and Carmarthenshire is leading the way as one of Wales’ premier hot spots.
