CENTRALLY LOCATED - Charlottetown is the ideal base for exploring the rest of PEI. A short drive in any direction outside of the city brings you to the Island’s famous white sand beaches, family attractions, seasonal restaurants, quaint villages, and world-class golf. The Confederation Trail passes right through downtown and is a wonderful place to walk or begin a longer cycling journey to the countryside.
TWO FEET & A HEARTBEAT - Charlottetown’s historic downtown was built pre-car era and its walkability is part of its allure. Many of our accommodations are located in the heart of downtown so everything you need is right at your fingertips, while others are a short drive or bike ride away.
THE NIGHTLIFE - After busy days spent adventuring in the city and beyond, Charlottetown’s seaside nightlife awaits. From world-class theatre and delicious dining to gorgeous sunsets and incredible live music, there’s lots to do in the capital city until the wee hours. Soak in all the best coastal vibes from a floating dock, a rooftop terrace, a waterside nightclub, or a side street patio.
FOOD & DRINK - If you’re craving an early morning vanilla latte, a late-night pizza, or a full-blown lobster dinner with all the fixings, the Island’s capital is full of wonderful places to eat & drink. Many accommodations also offer breakfast and several have full-service dining rooms to be enjoyed at your convenience.
IT'S BIKE-FRIENDLY - Charlottetown’s relatively flat terrain is a dream for exploring on a cruiser. Or you can easily take to the Confederation Trail on your road bike and launch your Island adventures from there. Many accommodations also offer bicycle parking/storage to guests so be sure to ask!
WALK THE ISLAND - The Island Walk is basically PEI’s version of the Camino Trail. Featuring 32 sections across 700 km, The Island Walk has the perfect landscape, both in terrain and scenery, for those who are looking for a long distance walking adventure. Complete the entire Island Walk route with places to stay along the way or tackle it in sections during your vacation.
SUSTAINABLE CHOICES MADE EASY - Many of our hotels are committed to doing their part for our environment and offer various ways for guests to follow suit. From offering programs that allow you to forgo your housekeeping to being full blown energy-efficient properties, it’s easy to make eco-friendly choices.

A RENEWED VISION
Taking an Honest Look at the History of Charlottetown
Knowing the history of a city helps you understand and appreciate the place you’re visiting—for better and for worse. And although modern-day Charlottetown on the surface is filled with a colourful mix of restored heritage buildings, beautiful shops & restaurants, and refreshing harbour views, our history hasn’t always been so bright and charming. In fact, reminders of colonization are almost everywhere and there has been a lot of (un)learning and unpacking of our collective history over the last several years.
A (VERY) BRIEF HISTORY
While we can’t ignore that being the Birthplace of Confederation was once one of Charlottetown’s biggest claims to fame, the history of this place is much fuller and a lot longer than that one event. During your visit to Charlottetown, you may want to take time to explore the various perspectives, including the injustices at play and those who were notably absent from deliberations in 1864, including the Mi'kmaq people.
MAWI'OMI AT ISLAND TIDES YOGA & WELLNESS FESTIVAL - @IAMGESSYY
These original inhabitants of Prince Edward Island called the island Epekwitk (which means “lying in the water”) and have inhabited the land and waterways of the Island for over 12,000 years. Epekwitk’s history includes horror and heartbreak, with the takeover and occupation of Mi'kmaq land, the largest Acadian Expulsion taking place across the Charlottetown Harbour at Skmaqn–Port-la-Joye–Fort Amherst, slavery by government leaders, bigotry, and racism.
HISTORICAL Landmarks & Experiences
Charlottetown, as it's known today, can be traced back to the original French military settlement established on the site in 1720. From there, waves of immigration, from the French Acadians, to the British, to people from all over the world have also called this place home and helped to shape its history, landscape, culture, and architecture. This history, despite its darkness, also includes outstanding people and events, with justice advocates ensuring the voices of Mi'kmaq and Black people, women, and others were and continue to be heard. Charlottetown still has a long way to go, but is finally facing and acknowledging its shadows and working towards a brighter future where everyone feels accepted, valued, and respected.
• BEACONSFIELD HISTORIC HOUSE – Designed and built by W.C. Harris in 1877 for James and Edith Peake, Beaconsfield was one of Charlottetown’s most elegant homes. • ST. DUNSTAN’S BASILICA – St. Dunstan’s Roman Catholic Cathedral National Historic Site of Canada is a large, stone church in the centre of Charlottetown. It’s an excellent example of the High Victorian Gothic style in Canadian architecture. CITY LIFE, COASTAL VIBES
THE FLOATING DOCK
Charlottetown has the best of both worlds. As a coastal city with a vibe that just won’t quit, you’re rarely more than a short walk, bike ride or drive from the water’s edge. Quaint streets lined with colourful houses lead you to harbourside boardwalks, while scenic drives through rolling farmland take you to the Island’s world-renowned beaches. Whether it’s the sound of lapping water, the taste of fresh seafood, or the smell of the salty breeze, there are so many ways to soak up the peaceful Island vibes during your visit.
EXPLORE - Is there anything more refreshing than getting out on the water on a hot day? We don’t think so. Try your hand at flyboarding or hoverboarding with Explore More Watersports. Or get up close and personal to the Charlottetown harbour with kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals at Paddles.
EAT & DRINK - A warm sea breeze is the perfect accompaniment to a feast of fresh seafood and other culinary delights translated through the hands of PEI’s finest chefs. There are plenty of dining options along the Charlottetown waterfront, including (from east to west) The Cork & Cast, Lobster on the Wharf, Nimrods’ Floating Restaurant, JC's Tiki Bar, The Chip Shack, Peake’s Quay Restaurant, Dave's Lobster, Brakish, Salt & Sol, and more.
CRUISE - If cruising the harbour by boat sounds like bliss, you’re in luck. There are a handful of tours departing from Peake’s Wharf and the SeaPort Marina, including a landand-sea tour of the city aboard the amphibious Harbour Hippo, a seal watching excursion with Peake’s Wharf Tours, a lobster fishing experience with Top Notch Tours, or an ecofriendly option with Sol Paddle Tavern or Ride Solar.
DRIVE - Charlottetown is the perfect base to explore PEI’s 800 km of beachfront. From National and Provincial Park beaches with all the amenities to those with barely any road signs, your options are endless. Whether you hit the red cliffs of the south shore or the white sandy dunes of the north, a day at the beach is never far away.
WATCH - At the bottom of Water Street sits the big red 2023 numbers, the Love Locks and red Adirondack chairs inviting you to soak in your beautiful surroundings and stay a while. Listen to the knock of sailboats at the nearby Charlottetown Yacht Club as you embrace the art of doing less.
PEDAL - Much of the city’s waterfront is linked by a series of boardwalks that provide the best views of the harbour and stunning cityscapes no matter the season. Sunset strolls or bike rides in Victoria Park are highly recommended, with a special stop at Kiwanis Dairy Bar for ice cream to enjoy on the nearby floating dock. Bike rentals are available at MacQueen's Bike Shop, Outer Limit Sports, FunWheel Rentals, Rising Tide Electric Bicycles, and select accommodations around town. Epic Electric Scooters can be found on almost every street corner downtown.
SLEEP - You can even sleep on the water! The Floating Cottages on the Quay provide a tranquil overnight experience while still feeling like you're immersed in the heart of the city. Located within Peake's Quay Marina on the historic Charlottetown waterfront, you can spend your nights under the glow of the stars and your mornings watching the sun rise over the harbour. The Delta Prince Edward by Marriott is also perched on the waterfront and offers wonderful views and plenty of amenities.

“Victoria Row is so vibrant and we feel right at home being a part of this energy. Regardless of the season, “the Row” is the epicentre of locals and visitors enjoying themselves. Featuring Mexican tacos, incredible margaritas, hanging swings, and a tropical vibe that puts everyone in a good mood, it’s impossible to visit this dockside eatery and not feel relaxed.
“The best part about running a bar on the water is that every time someone sits at my bar, whether it’s their day off or vacation, I get to make sure it’s their best. The hardest part of the job is not being able to join each of them on the other side of the bar top!” – Jordan Docherty, Owner

“I try to give each visitor a taste of my island. We are very social in our food culture and get to know each other through food. BUY IT FRESH , BUY IT LOCAL
Without a conscious effort to embrace the Island’s cherished practices of farming & fishing, it would be nearly impossible to have the incredible food scene we have today. We continue to honour these rural roots in our kitchens and on our dinner plates while welcoming any global twists that enrich the foodie landscape. So, during your visit, be sure to take in the abundance of local, fresh food available at farmers’ markets, restaurants, and local shops throughout the city.
SPECIALTY FOOD SHOPS & MARKETS - You’ll be delighted by the variety of local and specialty food shops, including Kent Street Market, MR Seafood, Riverview Country Market, KJL Meats, Gallant’s & Co., Liquid Gold, Receiver Coffee Co., Farmacy + Fermentary, Mike's Island Market, and Anne of Green Gables Chocolates. At these shops and farmers’ markets, you’ll discover an array of artisan food products, such as fresh artisan bread, handmade chocolates, free-range eggs, incredible cheese, hormone-free meats, PEI preserves, creamy fauxmage (vegan cheese), organic kombucha, and more.
DROP BY A FARMSTAND - Take a drive beyond the city limits and you’ll find plenty more options to buy local food at seasonal markets, shops, and even at some farms. Keep your eyes peeled while driving along PEI’s highways and backroads, as you may happen upon farmstands set up roadside. Typically unattended, these inviting stands offer seasonal treats, including famous PEI potatoes, strawberries, Island honey, apples, and other homegrown goods. Just be sure you bring some change to leave in the cash box or jar! The honour system is alive & well.
CELEBRATE THE HARVEST - The end of summer brings with it the PEI Fall Flavours Festival, a culinary festival that takes place in communities across Prince Edward Island in October. Farm Day in the City presented by the PEI Potato Growers (Oct 1) is the largest open air market and street festival in PEI. It’s a treat for the senses with over 180 food & artisan vendors, live entertainment, a petting zoo, kids’ activities, live painting, and more.
TO MARKET, WE GO...
MID-TOWN - A must-visit is the Charlottetown Farmers’ Market where mingling is as popular a pastime as shopping for farm fresh items. This longstanding market features 60+ vendors, including farmers, food producers, hot (and cold – think oysters) food vendors, crafters, and artisans. Open Saturdays (9am - 2pm) throughout the year and Wednesdays from late June to the middle of October.
DOWNTOWN - Every Sunday throughout the summer (July - Sept, 10am - 3pm), the Downtown Farmers’ Market sets up a beautiful outdoor market with vendor tents that line the lower length of Queen Street. You can find homemade treats, local produce, a hot lunch, artisan wares, and lots of other goodies. Starting at Grafton Street running toward Water Street, you won’t want to miss this quintessential PEI shopping experience.
HARBOURSIDE - Founders’ Food Hall & Market is the perfect waterfront oasis for food lovers. Located in one of the city’s most stunning historic spaces, this urban market features several local food vendors serving up high-quality food & drink, including freshly baked goods, sushi burritos, Italian-style paninis, gourmet burgers, authentic Mexican delights, vegan comfort food, French Carribean, incredible pizza, baked potatoes, gourmet donuts & more.

EAT, PLAY, LOVE LIKE A LOCAL
In Charlottetown, there’s not much differentiation between what the locals do and what our visitors get up to. And while we work hard, we play hard, too. Whether it’s catching up with a neighbour after an early morning hot yoga class, combing the sand bars for ocean treasures under the glow of a sunset, or cracking a bright red lobster claw on the first day of the season, there are so many things that make life in Charlottetown (and beyond) so special. Here are various ways you can embrace the Island lifestyle and live like a PEI local.
SAVOUR FRESH SEAFOOD - Head to Lobster on the Wharf for the lobster, stay for the harbour views. For a refreshing mojito and tasty fish tacos, check out The Cork & Cast floating resto at the SeaPort Marina. Peake’s Quay Restaurant & Bar also offers a sprawling deck that’s perfect for Happy Hour drinks & a piping bowl of mussels. The best place to watch the boats come and go over fresh oysters is the deck of Salt & Sol. Another local favourite with a casual atmosphere is Water Prince Corner Shop. And for an upscale surf & turf experience, check out Claddagh Oyster House on Sydney Street.
ENJOY LIVE MUSIC - Take in an acoustic performance at one of our many pubs & restos, or stop to listen to local talent playing on the Victoria Row or Peake’s Wharf stage. For traditional music sessions, be sure to check out The Old Triangle. Meanwhile, Trailside Music Hall provides an intimate setting to see both well-known and up-andcoming artists. In search of an authentic Ceilidh? Look no further than the Benevolent Irish Society. Or come in September for the PEI International Shellfish Festival where live music and shellfish collide to create the biggest kitchen party of the year.
on Queen Street. Reserve a spot on Sol Paddle Tavern, Charlottetown’s first solar-powered cycle boat. Take a quick rip on an Epic Electric Scooter, which are located on street corners throughout the city, or simply explore the beauty of the city on foot.
EMBRACE THE SPIRIT OF TRADITION - Harness racing is almost as deeply rooted in the Island way of life as our potato fields. Head to “the track” from April to January each year and experience one of the oldest Island traditions at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park, the Island’s premier destination for live harness racing. Old Home Week is also a time-honoured attraction that takes place annually in mid-August and features amusement rides, livestock & horse shows, the Gold Cup & Saucer Parade and Race, and plenty of live entertainment at the Red Shores Racetrack and Eastlink Centre.
CHOOSE THE SUSTAINABLE WAY - We care deeply about preserving our Island for future generations. Join us by heading out for a unique excursion on board Ride Solar, a solar-powered food & beverage tour in downtown Charlottetown. Rent a bike at FunWheels at Founders’ Hall and cruise the city on two (or four) wheels, or try an electric bike from Rising Tide Electric Bicycles
GET YOUR SWEAT ON - Taking care of your body, mind, and spirit is so critical in this day and age. Whether it’s a spicy hot yoga session, a heart-pumping HIIT class, or an invigorating run along the Victoria Park boardwalk, nothing beats an endorphin-boosting experience and the prolonged benefits you feel throughout the day. Thankfully in downtown Charlottetown, there are many warm, welcoming and supportive environments to do just that. Places like Modo Yoga Charlottetown, Infrared Fitness, Charlottetown Yoga Space, and Kinetic Fitness all offer drop-in classes of all varieties. Or hit up your hotel gym before heading out to seize the day!
HIT THE LINKS - Is there anything better than waking at dawn for a rejuvenating round at your favourite golf course? From links-style courses to the more traditional approaches, there are over 400 fairways for golfers of all levels to choose from. There are also lots of affordable rounds and packages, so it’s easy to fit a round (or six) into any vacation. Nearby Fox Meadows Golf Course in Stratford or Belvedere Golf Club in Charlottetown are great options close to the city centre. No matter which courses you choose to play, breathtaking waterscapes and gorgeous pastoral scenery are practically guaranteed. Find out more at golfpei.ca

MEET THE MAKERS & CURATORS
Charlottetown is a magnet for creative minds from all over the world. Whether it’s the fresh air, the relaxed pace of life, or something in the water, PEI is abundant with innovative thinkers, skilled artists, and talented curators that draw inspiration from the Island. Spend some time visiting the Island’s makers, creators and curators—including the four featured below—and you’ll get closer to understanding just how magical this little Island and the people that live here really are.
SWENN - Having grown up by the sea in her native town of Bretagne, France, Kristell Geffroy has always been drawn to coastal living. PEI's unique combination of natural beauty, strong sense of community, and a growing arts and business scene were all reasons to expand her fashion business, Swenn, from Quebec to the East Coast. Geffroy’s desire to share her passion for fashion and sustainability while embracing Island life were a perfect fit for her growing business. In fact, the name itself was inspired by the four cardinal points, representing the compass that guides sailors on the sea. The common theme among the products at Swenn is a focus on natural fibers, quality and durability, timeless style, and sustainability. In addition to her own clothing line, she also features a carefully curated selection of young Canadian designers in her store, which is now open within the Confederation Court Mall.
“Visitors to Swenn can expect a warm and inviting atmosphere where they can discover and appreciate the quality and local design of our clothing line. Our garments are inspired by nature and travel, and designed to be both modern and timeless with a casual elegant style.” – Kristell

DETAILS FINE ART GALLERY - Details Gallery originated as an antique and interior decorating business and evolved over 30 years into the beautiful art space that it is today. Located on the buzzing pedestrian street of Victoria Row, the gallery is ideally situated in the hub of the arts and culture scene in Charlottetown. Many people are drawn to the galleries, cafés, history, theatre and ambience felt there throughout the year. The gallery’s owner & curator, Arlene Rice, especially loves seeing what her current and long-standing artists create year after year, and how they express and interpret new themes and ideas. She also enjoys discovering and profiling artists who bring new ideas and perspectives to the art world on PEI.
“As a curator, my interest continues to be motivated by the everchanging dynamics of the art world. It’s a continuous learning curve. My aim is to provide a unique, diverse selection of art work for everyone to enjoy in their homes and businesses.” –

OH HEY PEI - For local sisters Kim Roach & Rachel Peters, it’s always been a dream to work together. With complementary areas of talent that flow well together, Rachel as a photographer and Kim as an illustrator/designer, it felt like a no brainer when they decided to open their shop, Oh Hey PEI, in August 2019. Located in the historic space of Founders’ Food Hall & Market on the Charlottetown waterfront, walking into Oh Hey is like a breath of fresh air. Kim & Rachel are constantly inspired by the talent on the Island—from the musicians and the chefs, to the small business owners supporting the community—and the natural beauty of the ocean and green spaces that surrounds them.
“Curating local product with makers and artisans was our dream from the very beginning. Everything in our shop is something that we’d buy and use, so it’s like building and curating products we think others would love in their life. We think that ‘aha moment’ for each piece comes for us when we get the first full visual of what that product looks like, then the fireworks start about the packaging and branding.” –
Kim Roach & Rachel Peters
6 Prince St | @ohheypei | www.ohheypei.com
Northern Watter’s Knitwear & Tartan Shop is home to 100% British wool sweaters and accessories that are knit on antique Swiss knitting looms in their shop on Victoria Row. Their sweaters are often seen in major motion pictures set in the late nineteenth or early twentieth centuries, so their level of craftsmanship is born of that era and their sweaters are made to last a lifetime.
MI'KMAQ PRINTING & DESIGN - This Charlottetownbased social enterprise was inspired by the desire to recognize the amazing design talents of the Mi’kmaq and Indigenous community of Epekwitk. Mi’kmaq Printing & Design has created a safe and supportive environment for Indigenous People to discover and develop their skills. It was brought to life with the goal of sharing creativity, building relationships, and offering an authentic Indigenous experience for customers. People are invited to their apparel shop to purchase and learn about Mi’kmaq and Indigenous cultures. In fact, their first design was KWE’ which means “Hello” in Mi’kmaq. It’s a simple gesture & a way to greet one another that provides an opportunity for conversation and learning for all.
"All of our designs tell a story. The designer often has a deep connection with their design and it’s amazing to watch the process from beginning to end. We also highly value having Elders and Knowledge Keepers in our space to share and teach. We then share that knowledge with the greater community and our customers. This is a way of reclaiming our cultures and makes us proud of the products we create.” –

STEP INTO THE CENTRE FOR ALL CANADIANS
Confederation Centre of the Arts is an expansive arts complex nestled in the heart of downtown Charlottetown. Visual and performing arts and Canadian heritage come alive at the Centre year-round. This is the go-to space for the very best in theatre, live music, art classes, family entertainment, and so much more.
THEATRE
Confederation Centre is host to the long-running Charlottetown Festival, a theatrical affair featuring six productions across three venues.
The 2023 Festival is full of stories of resilience, inspiration, empowerment, and lots of laughter. The lineup includes a new Canadian musical, celebrates a variety of performance styles and theatrical forms, and features lots of local talent.
MAGGIE – After suffering an unthinkable loss, a Scottish mother must rely on her strength, sense of humour, and fiercely loyal group of friends to raise her boys and protect them from the harsh and ever-changing world around them. Set in post-war Scotland, MAGGIE tells the inspirational tale of a fiery school cleaner living in the mining town of Lanarkshire. Based on a true story, this heartfelt show features a soul-stirring score by award-winning recording artist Johnny Reid. A tribute to Johnny’s Granny and the people of an almost forgotten generation, this exciting new musical is a celebration of family, community, and the joy and laughter that can be found, even in the darkest of times. (June 21 – September 2, Sobey Family Theatre)
The Play That Goes Wrong – An award-winning smash-hit comedy that has taken over Broadway and London’s West End. The Sherlock Holmes meets Monty Python production is a play within a play, telling the story of a failing theatre troupe trying to put on a murder mystery. The show is chock-full of mishaps and madcap mania that delivers fun for all ages. The Play That Goes Wrong has garnered rave reviews from around the world. (June 14 – September 23, Sobey Family Theatre)
The funniest play Broadway has ever seen.
I’m Every Woman – A revue of iconic music that changed the world. The cabaret will feature five powerhouse vocalists performing empowering songs from legendary women. The show travels through several decades of hit music, with songs from Aretha Franklin, Dolly Parton, Chaka Khan, Taylor Swift, and more. (July 3 –September 22, The Mack)
The Songs of Johnny & June – This energetic show returns for another run and celebrates the lives and songs of Johnny Cash and June Carter, country music’s most iconic couple. The biographical performance follows the legendary pair’s storied relationship through renowned songs, like “Jackson”, “Folsom Prison”, and “Ring of Fire”. (July 6 – September 2, The Mack)
THE OUTDOOR AMPHITHEATRE

And with a historic downtown layout designed for walking, homes painted every colour of the rainbow, and reimagined spaces designed with impeccable taste, such adventuring is inspiring and full of awe.

CHRISTINE DOVEY'S Fav Spaces in the City
CONFEDERATION CENTRE NATIONAL ART GALLERY
145 RICHMOND ST - I was lucky enough to preview the current exhibits recently and was absolutely blown away by the beauty of the modern space itself, as well as the stunning gallery of artwork showcased over three levels.
THE GALLERY COFFEE HOUSE & BISTRO 82 GREAT GEORGE ST - When delicious food and coffee are served in a historic space that's been updated in the most beautiful way, complete with exposed brick walls, high tin ceilings and art-covered walls, it's the best.
SLAYMAKER & NICHOLS GASTRO HOUSE 82 FITZROY ST - I'm a huge fan of whimsical design, especially when it's combined with beautiful century details, modern luxury, and heavenly food. Slaymaker & Nichols is a perfect blend of all of the above. The inn upstairs is also stunning—it has character and charm for days.
THE GREAT GEORGE HOTEL 58 GREAT GEORGE ST - An inn made up of a city block of brightly coloured heritage buildings and homes in the heart of the city. It’s filled with a blend of antiques and modern touches… it’s so delightful.
LEONHARD'S CAFÉ 142 GREAT GEORGE ST - This space is so cozy and charming, and is the happiest spot to enjoy a delicious lunch. Don’t miss their vanilla rolls and mimosas! Favourite design elements here include the wallpapered bathrooms with transom windows above the doors and a main counter that features a brown paper roll to display the daily specials, crystal chandeliers, hanging dried flowers, and letterboard menus.
TOSH CO. HOME STORE 53 THOMPSON DR - This new design and decor store is packed full of the most beautiful curated selection of new home goods and vintage rugs. Every single item in this impeccablydesigned shop located in “uptown” Charlottetown is a stunner.
THE HAVILAND CLUB 2 HAVILAND ST - I adore large historic homes that have been restored into beautiful venues and social spaces. The Haviland is just so charming and luxe. It’s a beautiful spot to host a special event.
RECEIVER COFFEE CO. 178 WATER ST - The Brass Shop Roastery and Breadworks building itself sits on Charlottetown's waterfront, with stunning stonework, the cutest gables, arched black windows, & lots of historic charm. The interior features a large open space with a soaring vaulted ceiling, giant wood beams, buckets of natural light, pretty rounded windows, and a great juxtaposition between the original features and modern design elements.

AN ODE TO OUTDOOR LIVING IN THE CITY
Getting out in nature is key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Luckily there are plenty of ways to live your best life outdoors in Charlottetown throughout the year. Whether it’s laying out a picnic in one of the city’s historic squares, attending a yoga class on the waterfront or snowshoeing through the wooded trails in Victoria Park, the options for embracing outdoor living are pretty well endless—and all vital to the chill vibe we know and love.
THE LEGACY GARDEN - A must-visit for gardeners and those interested in urban agriculture, the Legacy Garden backs onto the Confederation Trail and is located behind the PEI Farm Centre at 420 University Avenue. This impressive 8.5-acre expanse of land is home to a 150-plot community garden, 2-acre goodwill garden, accessibility garden, sunflower garden, two architecturally stunning urban beehives, and more. It’s a sweet escape in the midst of mid-town Charlottetown, and not far from one of our coolest breweries, Upstreet Craft Brewing.
CONNAUGHT SQUARE - If you’re sight-seeing in the downtown core with kids, Connaught Square might just be the perfect place to take a break and let them scamper about. This darling green space, located at 60 Richmond Street on the west side of downtown, has large trees, asphalt pathways, and plenty of playground equipment for the little ones to enjoy.
CONFEDERATION LANDING PARK - This 6-acre green space is nestled in amongst the hustle and bustle of Charlottetown’s waterfront. Its sprawling spaces are perfect for soaking up the sun’s rays, enjoying an ice cream cone from the nearby COWS shop, doing outdoor yoga in the wintertime, watching the boats come and go from the harbour, and (literally) stopping to smell the roses.
VICTORIA PARK - The city’s crown jewel of green spaces is an idyllic place to laze in the grass or work up a sweat. This 40-acre park is located along the western end of the city’s waterfront, and features a lengthy waterfront boardwalk, 7-acres of quiet wooded area and trails, eight lit tennis courts, three ballpark diamonds, a skateboard park, an accessible playground, swimming pool, and a very popular splash pad. The Kiwanis Dairy Bar along the parkway offers a tasty pit stop on those steamy summer days.
THE JOSEPH A. GHIZ MEMORIAL PARK - Named in honour of a former PEI premier, this east-end park is located between Kent and Grafton Streets. It offers a playground, basketball court, swing set, fountain, a gazebo, benches, walking trail, and various gardens. The Confederation Trail also runs through the park and is a popular setting off point for cyclists and walkers heading uptown or further west/northeast along the trail.
QUEEN ELIZABETH PARK - This riverside park is located uptown, on the west side of the city where North Queen Elizabeth Drive and Spruce Street intersect. Just a short drive or bike ride through Brighton from downtown, the park includes two baseball diamonds, a soccer pitch, a gazebo, and a playground with jungle gyms, swings, and more.
HILLSBOROUGH SQUARE - Hillsborough Square is located on the east side of the city, where Hillsborough and Richmond Street intersect. Over the years, the park has served many purposes including as a pasture for livestock. Today, it is home to a playground, mature trees (perfect for reading a book under), and asphalt paths that criss-cross the square.
OLE KING'S SQUARE - This green space may have fewer amenities to offer its visitors than the other three downtown squares, but it provides a change of scenery for those strolling the city. And if you need to take a rest, check out the Square’s five oversized bronze chairs, which honour Mark Butcher, a local furniture maker from the 1800s.
ROCHFORD SQUARE - Located across from the provincial buildings on Rochford Street, this 4-hectare park is one of four that define the downtown core. Its Victorian-style garden, walking paths, ornate flower beds, and benches make it a welcome respite for those exploring the downtown by foot.

WHERE TALENT & IMAGINATION COLLIDE
The art scene in Charlottetown is alive and well. Whether it’s the energizing forces of the ocean, the stillness found in the forests, or the vibrant pulse you feel in the seaside capital, the Island’s enchanting nature draws so much creative talent here. The resulting effect in Charlottetown is beautiful and thought-provoking with inspiring moments at nearly every turn.
ART AROUND TOWN - It’s impossible to explore downtown Charlottetown without happening upon pieces of public art. In 2022, three new lively and colourful murals by world-renowned artists were added to downtown Charlottetown building façades. Keep an eye out for Jieun Kim’s creation on the backside of City Cinema (64 King St), I AM EELCO’s eye-catching design on the side of the Charlottetown Fire Hall (89 Kent St), and Mister Piro’s handiwork on the side of 138 Kent Street. There’s also a larger-than-life Erika Rutherford print hung on the exterior of The Old Triangle, among others.
VISUAL ARTS UNDER ONE ROOF - The National Art Gallery at Confederation Centre of the Arts is a must-visit. Featuring works by renowned Canadian artists and an intriguing roster of rotating exhibits, the Gallery experience is engaging, inspiring, approachable, and open to all ages. Enjoy a short visit or spend the whole afternoon in the CCAG’s spacious setting and discover a wide range of exhibitions, from modern design to historical pieces. Over at The Guild, Island artists are celebrated and showcased in rotating exhibitions throughout the year.
A MAGICAL TRANSFORMATION - In late summer (Aug 26), Charlottetown’s public spaces transform into an artistic wonderland for one day only during Art in the Open. This free, family-friendly contemporary arts festival runs from 4pm until midnight and features unique, interactive art installations throughout the downtown core. A highlight for many is the March of the Crows, a grassroots parade that pays homage to the city’s large crow population and attracts many costumed participants. Ending at Victoria Park at dusk, it’s the perfect precursor for the illuminated pieces that can often be found throughout the park after dark.
LIVE MUSIC AND FESTIVALS - From intimate venues to open-air concerts, live music is something that’s cherished in Charlottetown. We’re fortunate to have a mix of intimate live music venues like The Trailside Music Hall and larger spaces like Confederation Centre or PEI Brewing Company. Outdoor spaces like Peake’s Wharf and Victoria Row really take centre stage in the summer months, while the regular stream of live music in pubs & bars and multi-day music festivals infuse the city with palpable energy throughout the year.
HANDCRAFTED CREATIONS - The downtown core is also home to several shops that showcase locally-crafted pieces made by talented artisans, including jewellery, pottery, wood art, woven pieces, and lots more. In fact, a number of artisans have their own studios/shops that are open to the public, so be sure to drop by and watch them in action. Of special mention is Garnish Jewellery on Water Street, where owner and metalsmith, Stacey Leunes (along with her sweet pups, Willow & Fern), can often be found working on various hand-forged pieces.
MESMERIZING MUSICALS - Confederation Centre’s Charlottetown Festival is a summer staple with a variety of shows playing between their two stages.
• MAGGIE is set in post-war Scotland and tells the inspirational (and true!) tale of a fiery school cleaner living in the mining town of Lanarkshire. (June 21 –September 2, Sobey Family Theatre)
• The Play That Goes Wrong is an award-winning smash-hit Sherlock Holmes meets Monty Python production comedy that has taken over Broadway and London’s West End. (June 14 – September 23, Sobey Family Theatre)
• The Songs of Johnny & June is an energetic show that celebrates the lives and songs of Johnny Cash and June Carter, country music’s most iconic couple. (July 6 – September 2, The Mack)
• I’m Every Woman is a revue of iconic music that changed the world. This cabaret features five powerhouse vocalists performing empowering songs from legendary women. (July 3 – September 22, The Mack)
