Introduction

Welcome to your September Issue Welcome to your September edition and the “exam results” and “back to school” routines for many families. 2020 will be remembered for numerous reasons, perhaps none more so than for the thousands of teenagers missing out on their GCSE and A Level exams this year, and then hoping that their final grades are fair and sufficient to enable them to move on to the next stage on their learning journey. I just wonder whether or not the “Gap Year” of travelling widely before entering higher education will become a thing of the past? Before you go any further, however, and start making lists of who will get what seventeen weeks from now, (Christmas, if you’d not yet had time to think so far ahead!) just relax with your favourite magazine … and enjoy the month ahead.

Claire x

A warm welcome to our September issue and, as high summer passes into autumn, we wait with bated breath, (behind a colourful array of face masks) for the second spike of the Covid-19 pandemic to strike. An air of extreme caution can still be felt in places, yet incredible footage reaches us now and again of groups of people mixing and drinking, without a care or a facemask in sight. This past six months has certainly confirmed the old saying, “There’s nowt so queer as folk”! As the pandemic continues remorselessly to affect everyone, overseas travel continues to take an enormous hit this year. Holidays within the British Isles will have hardly ever been so popular. The glorious Lake District is this year’s destination for our family, bringing to mind the fact that our road journey will no doubt be long and tedious. Car drivers towing caravans will abound and I salute you – we’re right behind you all the way! Enjoy the read!

H

ow often do we hear the cliché, “An Englishman’s home is his castle”? There’s no doubt that, as a nation, we seem to be pretty good at ‘fencing ourselves in’ when we feel like it – pulling up the drawbridge and cosying ourselves behind that Leylandii hedge.

Yes, there are plenty of us who would rather look out from our property and see other people walking by, but the ‘protecting what we’ve got’ mentality has meant many successful

businesses having been based on the boundary fence / hedge / wall around our little space. Add to that the feeling that our garden area can / should be able to be used as another room (if the weather allows), then we can see how the firms creating patios, sheds, porches and all manner of outside furniture have been able to prosper, as we seek “the great outdoors” (once the rain holds off for more than a few days!) set amidst perfectly groomed lawns and flower beds. Inside the home, more and more attention is being paid to the ways in which we can make ourselves more living space, by adding the conservatory or making that ‘dead space’ in the loft into a fabulous extra bedroom or two. Those partition walls can disappear and hey presto! … you’ve got yourself that perfect large lounge you’ve always wanted. Replace those windows, re-tile the bathroom, change those kitchen units, get a new staircase … the list goes on! Our castles are forever being beautified … and isn’t it great?! This month, we’re looking at our living spaces, inside and out, and the myriad ways in which our local craftsmen ply their trades to make our homes and gardens our pride and joy. Keep up the home improvements – keep it local!

his Pinchbeck-based firm are establishing an enviable reputation for quality and value, confirmed by a host of very favourable recommendations from satisfied customers on their website, Info@eco-drives.co.uk.

Resin driveways are a long-lasting and easy-tomaintain option to transform the front of your home. An eco-friendly alternative, thanks to the non-toxic materials used, and available in a range of colours, a resin driveway is naturally draining, meaning no more puddles from heavy rainfall. They are highly resistant to rust, oil, corrosion, salt and cracking, and are also the safest option, being resistant to abrasion, slipping, indentation and ignition. The block paving driveways provided by EcoDrives are becoming an increasingly popular choice, due to the versatile design opportunities. Block paving is available in a wide range of styles and patterns, meaning they can be used to create a truly unique design, fitting your individual needs and taste. This type of surface is very durable and can withstand heavy use and harsh weather conditions, while only requiring occasional cleaning to keep it looking its best. It prevents surface water build-up due to the porous nature of the materials used, allowing for a more eco-friendly block paving service. Whether you are looking for something subtle or eye-catching, Eco-Drives Ltd are confident you will find a driveway that fits your requirements and complements your home. Their prices are very competitive and their service is friendly, professional and high quality. To discuss your requirements, please call 01775 888 336 and check out their gallery at info@eco-drives.co.uk for examples of their work. S E P T E M BE R 2 0 2 0

Your Garden

September Gardening Tips

N

ights are starting to draw in and, with the shorter days, there’s less time to spend on the allotment or vegetable garden. Growth is slowing down now and hopefully you should be able to get on top of the weed growth. Needless to say, there will still be plenty of jobs to do!

A few jobs that need doing include: • Cut down asparagus to 2.5cms (1in) above the ground. • Turn the compost heap and water if it is dry.

Now is a good time to take stock of what grew well and what was not as successful, as this will help with next year’s planning. Also, it is an ideal time if you are thinking of taking over an allotment plot or turning part of your garden over to vegetables, as you can prepare the soil by digging and adding fertiliser or manure and then cover it over until you are ready to plant out next year. Raised beds could be built in readiness and you have plenty of time to plan which crops to grow to suit your needs.

• Earth-up or stake Brussels and remove any yellowing lower leaves or those that have fallen off, as these are ideal homes for pests to shelter. Tall growing varieties may need staking against autumn winds.

If you have not already got a composter now would be a good time to make or buy one as there is plenty of dead or dying material available from your plot. If you have one, add any material that is not diseased, turn it, water if it is dry and cover to keep warm. Do not forget to add ‘brown’ materials such as: autumn leaves, cardboard, egg boxes, eggshells and sweetcorn husks, to name but a few. The proportion of ‘greens’ to ‘browns’ should be 50/50.

• Prune blackberries when picking is over – cut out all of the canes that carried this year’s fruit, leave new canes unpruned.

As far as sowing seeds and planting out goes, there is not much that can be done: you can still sow rocket, spinach, oriental salad leaves

4 10

and winter lettuces. Crop covers keep the temperature slightly higher than the ambient temperature and protect the plants from getting battered by harsher weather conditions. Spring cabbages can be planted in their final position, but it is wise to cover them in netting to keep the birds and other pests at bay.

• Harvest apples and pears. • Ripen pumpkins and squashes by removing leaves to allow sunlight in. • Clear away old foliage and vegetation – leaving it to rot on the soil may spread diseases.

• Plant new strawberry plants and those propagated from runners. • Clear the soil of spent crops and leave it ‘rough dug over’ for the winter. It is also a good time to sow ‘green manures’ such as field beans, annual rye grass or phacelia, which overwinter and can be dug into the ground next spring. Happy gardening!

Stamp Duty “Holiday”

BY JASON TREADWELL, MANAGING DIRECTOR

POTENTIAL FOR MASSIVE SAVINGS!

O

n July 8th 2020, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, announced that there will be no Stamp Duty on homes selling for £500,000 or less (for those not purchasing a second home).

This temporary “holiday” will last until the end of March 2021. This has created the potential saving of thousands of pounds for homeowners, even for investment purchasers. Here at Newton Fallowell, we have certainly noticed an increase in activity for the Bourne property market. The latter end of May and June was a very buoyant time for the market, with many homeowners selling.

They had perhaps intended to move sooner, but had found the lockdown having restricted this from happening. The Stamp Duty “holiday” has allowed the market to remain buoyant, with many homeowners, who had been ‘on the fence’ towards moving, deciding now to be as good a time as ever, given the potential savings they could make. If you are considering capitalising on what remains an active local market, as well as the potential savings you could make, then please do not hesitate to contact Newton Fallowell. Whether you require financial advice, a valuation for your property or assistance in finding your next home, call your local Bourne experts on 01778 422567.

Here at Newton Fallowell Stamford, Oakham and Bourne, over the last three months, we have been running, cycling and walking 1,000 miles to raise money for our fantastic NHS. Be a Bright Spark

BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED

HEED ALTO ELECTRICAL’S SOUND ADVICE

S

ince the current lockdown started, people have had lots of time on their hands and we have seen a huge surge in people trying their hand at DIY. What’s more, we have also seen a surge in calls to correct DIY work over the lockdown period, from unsuccessful light replacements, to drilling through cables! We try and assess the damage over the phone and will either attend the same day, if it is an emergency, or book the job in to the diary if it is not urgent.

Some tips on how to avoid DIY disasters: ■ When drilling, avoid “electrical safe zones”. These are horizontal and vertical from any electrical fitting, and can be on either side of the wall. The top six inches of the wall, next to the ceiling, and six inches from any corners are all safe zones. If you drill here, you risk going through a cable. ■ If you have a go at something, and don’t get it quite right, call in a professional, but just be honest! You’re not going to get into trouble, and knowing where to look for a fault can save a lot of time, therefore costing less when the bill comes in. ■ If you are going to change an electrical fitting, make sure you identify your cables before taking the old fitting off, and make sure you tighten

your terminals properly. Loose connections are the biggest cause of electrical house fires. ■ If you don’t know how to do something, ask for professional advice. Alto Electrical are always happy to advise and all advice is free!

Finally, a lovely recommendation Local villager, Matt Homewood, has been working on a massive self-build extension on his home in Tongue End, near Bourne, and before even starting, he had consulted with Alto Electrical and had his home tested to see what wiring he would be able to keep, and which parts would need to be upgraded. Working with Matt every step of the way, Alto Electrical regularly inspected and, in some cases, altered Matt’s work. And when the cables were in and ready to go, it was Alto Electrical who made the final terminations, tested the installation, and notified building control of the work. Matt explains: “When I was choosing an electrician for my self-build, I was looking for someone who was reasonably priced and who I could work with during the various phases of building. Alto have been excellent, their standard of work is fantastic, they are prompt, tidy, the staff were most accommodating, and the price was right. If I need any advice, I know I can ring if needed. I cannot recommend them highly enough.”

The Smartphone App Which Makes Stolen Tools “Too Hot to Handle” by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Did you know that tool theft costs tradespeople £100 million a year? Not only this, but it ruins livelihoods and causes financial heartache for many self-employed people. However, while this kind of crime is on the increase, technology is fast catching up with the thieves and there is now a new smartphone app available, which makes stolen tools “too hot to handle”. A company in South Oxfordshire is making it tough for thieves to swipe and sell on valuable tools, and Cambridgeshire Constabulary is among a number of police forces in the UK to support the scheme; it empowers tradesmen to securely register their tools and also identify stolen ones. The easy-to-use app allows tradespeople to record pictures and details of their tools and receipts on a secure cloud server which holds the ‘ISO27001’ certificate. This list of tools can be downloaded as a PDF and sent to the police and insurance companies. Users can quickly report tools as stolen or lost from the app, which then sends an instant alert to all other local registered users, warning them that a theft has just happened. After tools are reported stolen, they appear on ‘Dodgy Gear’, a search engine for stolen goods which can be freely accessed by any member of the public or police. Before purchasing an item (online or at a market) you can very simply check on ‘Dodgy Gear’ to make sure the item you are about to buy is not listed as stolen. You can search for the tool by serial number, model number, brand, tool type and description. To register online, download the app or, to find out more, visit www.thetoolregister.com

Do I have to use the Property Lawyer my Estate Agent is Recommending? By Michelle Rickard at PDR Property Lawyers

This is something I hear on a daily basis; the quick answer is “NO”. When your estate agent recommends a conveyancing solicitor or a licensed conveyancer/ property lawyer, it is likely the firm they are recommending are paying them a ‘referral fee’. This fee is usually passed on to you, the client. You may be surprised to learn that some ‘referral fees’ are in the £100s, simply for your conveyancing business. This is why conveyancing fees vary so widely. Read the small print before you sign any agreements! Every law firm should detail how much they receive from the estate agent for passing business to them. The Solicitors Regulation Authority and The Council for Licensed Conveyancers, which regulates conveyancing solicitors and licensed conveyancers, has a strict referral code. Solicitors/licensed conveyancers are required to set out a full quotation which details their fees, the disbursement costs and associated expenses with your transaction. They are also required to reveal how much they paid for your referral. Look at this closely! I suggest you ask the solicitor/licensed conveyancer/property lawyer for details of the referral fee they have paid for your (potential) custom. In addition to checking the amount of money you, the client, are paying for your referred business, I strongly recommend that you get at least three quotes for your conveyancing. Fees for 4428

leasehold and freeholds within different valuation brackets can vary widely. I also suggest that you search for reviews of the firms you are interested in working with. In summary, when buying or selling a property it is vital that you appoint a lawyer that you can trust to act in your best interests, who will have the experience to complete the transaction properly and in timely manner and who will charge you a fair price for doing so. Everyone has the right to choose their own lawyer. Both the Solicitor’s Regulation Authority (SRA) and the Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC) rigorously state that its members are meant to ensure that their client has chosen them to act without pressure being exerted upon them to do so. If you are being pressurised into choosing a lawyer as outlined above refuse firmly and advise that you will seek the advice of the SRA or CLC – this usually does the trick! For more information, contact Michelle Rickard at PDR Property Lawyers on 01733 203873.

“The Curious Incident of the Bide in the Daytime!” ** If you happen to have spent your ‘exercise hours’, like many others during these lockdown months, walking along Mill Drove in Bourne, you will perhaps have seen a young couple beavering away at a curious structure, taking shape on the drive of one of the houses there.

T

houghts might have included: What on earth is that going to be? Is it an extension to the house? Why is it on a metal frame with wheels? Just how big will it actually get? Could you perhaps live in it?

Well, the “Magnificent Mill Drove Mystery” is about to be resolved, following a most enlightening guided tour I was fortunate enough to have been granted recently by said couple, Scott and Caroline. In brief, it will be, (when completed, hopefully, in September) a “Contemporary Tiny House Holiday Retreat”, called “The Bide Cabin”. Caroline and Scott take up the story: “We were on a visit to the Bauhaus Museum in Berlin, where a number of young designers and architects had designed and built a series of ‘Tiny Houses’, each one constructed on a 2.5m x 6m trailer base. We were totally inspired by how each designer had approached the parameters of the challenge and made unique practical homes/ workshops. After a year of planning in London, we moved to Caroline’s parents’ home in Bourne and commenced the build in April 2020. Scott is a qualified architect and Caroline has a background in furniture design and interiors; together, we designed the cabin. It has been constructed on a flatbed trailer from Holland, designed especially for ‘Tiny Houses’. With no building experience, we have built the cabin together, learning as we go. The cabin will feature a super-king size bed, wood burning stove, curated library, home cinema and outdoor pizza oven. We are trying to use new technologies and alternative materials to showcase sustainable and low-energy design, incorporating features such as sheep’s wool insulated walls, a water-less toilet, a mist shower and mechanical heat recovery. We will move the cabin from Bourne to Dorset in September, where it will be let out for holidays on a vineyard.” For further information: E-mail hello@thebide.com Web thebide.com Social @thebidecabin (** - with apologies to Mark Haddon – Ed.)

V.J. (Victory in Japan) Day – Saturday August 15th 2020 “ message of thanks from Jake Jacobs, Secretary A of the Bourne Branch of the Royal British Legion: “With kind permission fro m Bourne United Charities, the Royal British Legion, Bourne Branch, commemorated the seventy-fifth anniversary of this historic event, with a short service of remembrance at the cenotaph in Bourne. On behalf of our branch, I would like to thank: • Our Branch President, Lt. Col. Tom Hamilton (Retd.) for the concise history which he gave about this event; this was reiterated on the BBC1 TV “VJ Day Tribute from the Nation” which was aired later that evening. • The Mayor and Mayoress of Bourne, Cllr Colin and Mrs Fiona Pattison, who jointly laid a wreath for the parish of Bourne. Colin later recited the “Kohima Epitaph.” • Jazmin Coia for playing the “Last Post and Reveille.” • Our Branch Chairman, Terry Butler, for saying the “Act of Homage.” • Our Standard Bearer, Mr Ian Hume. • Gordon’s Photographic for the photographs supplied. The event went very well despite our current COVID restrictions. The small gathering of public members, some of whom had relatives that were part of this historic 14th Army (the “Forgotten Army”) and others who were prisoners of war during this brutal campaign, were grateful that their loved ones were not forgotten for their service and sacrifice given to our country.

The Virtual Revolution BY CLAIRE GRAY, OWNER OF RENU

This lockdown has encouraged us all to embrace technology a little more willingly than ever before.

P

latforms such as Zoom and Facetime, and Whatsapp groups have been a lifeline for keeping in touch with loved ones, as well as sustaining business meetings and socially distanced gatherings with friends and families. Change is not always welcomed, but it can be the catalyst for progress. I think it is true to say that most of us will now have seen and felt the benefits of the virtual revolution, whilst we will still appreciate the time when we can gather together in safety. This pandemic has raised awareness of how vitally important it is to keep ourselves physically fit and active. Yet many of the activities we enjoy around physical activity involve close contact with others, so the fitness industry has adapted quickly to move from physical to digital.

Virtual training is doing a fitness routine with your fitness coach at a time that fits in with you, without the burden of paying high fees or being limited to specific days and times. Many of these programmes are available for you to do at home, and this can be a great option if you have both the space and the equipment. Now that some restrictions are being lifted, Renu are taking this one step further, offering you a virtual personal trainer and unlimited virtual cycling classes in our fully-equipped and airconditioned gym! Indoor cycling classes have become increasingly popular over the past few years. A motivational instructor and some great music can see you through a calorie burning workout that is both enjoyable and gives great results.

I developed my lockdown survival package swiftly after lockdown, and it is specifically designed to give all the components you need to stay fit and healthy, whilst in the safety of your own home, without needing to be an athlete. You can choose from Pilates, Yoga, Cardio Tone and Abs classes and benefit from weekly e-mails to motivate and educate you on fitness, nutrition and beauty. It has been a real opportunity for me to share my thirty years of experience in the industry with a focus on feeling energised and good about yourself, inside and out. You can find out more about what I have to offer at www.clairegrayfitnesssolutions.co.uk.

Our Virtual Spin classes are completely safe and you can drop in, pick up some bluetooth headphones, select a workout of your choice, and get started. You will only be in close contact with your bike and your headphones but will enjoy a class “feel” as you become part of the virtual class on screen. Our gym membership gives you free access to our VIP member zone where there are now over thirty video sessions with Claire to keep you on track, and regular motivational e-mails to keep you motivated. There is no initial outlay, and you can enjoy unlimited gym and virtual spin usage for just £20 per month. Virtual fitness training is one convenient and affordable resource that can keep you safe, keep you fit and put a little spring back in your step!

Have your say on how our parish should be planned!

T

he Neighbourhood Plan (the Plan) relates to the whole of the parish including Bourne town, the villages of Dyke, Cawthorpe and Twenty and to the surrounding countryside. It is concerned with shaping our built environment.

It can help to protect important open spaces and buildings, for example; it can define where building can take place; and it can influence what new buildings look like and the kind of development that we want to see. Once the Plan is adopted it will be used to determine planning applications. The Town Council is responsible for preparing the Plan but has delegated this task to a Steering Group of members of the Town Council and local community. However, we want to involve the wider community by asking for your views at key stages. We have now produced a draft vision and objectives which you can read about in this summary leaflet.

The full Vision and Objectives Consultation Paper is available on our website at: www.bourneparishneighbourhoodplan.org.uk We want to know if the following draft vision outlines in broad terms what you would like the parish to be like by 2036: S E P TE MB ER 2020

The Draft Vision By 2036, Bourne will be a more attractive, sustainable, vibrant and prosperous market town and parish with a safe, healthy environment that is more resilient to climate change and where provisions have been made to better cater for the needs of our community, from the very young to the very old; where the positive character of our heritage, landscape and natural environment has been maintained and improved; where there is a thriving economy; where housing meets the needs of the local community; where shopping and services within the town centre are varied; where the visitor experience has been enhanced; and where links from the town to the surrounding countryside have been maintained and improved, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists.

Three prizes of ÂŁ50 each: Complete and return either the survey or the quick-questionnaire by 16th October 2020 to be entered into our prize draw. Three lucky winners will each receive a ÂŁ50 voucher to be spent in Bourne.

Bourne

39

The Objectives The objectives set out what needs to be achieved to make the vision a reality; there are thirteen in total. Information in this leaflet also outlines what we think are the key planning issues facing Bourne; more detailed information is available in the full Vision and Objectives Consultation Paper (see front page). We want to know if you think the draft objectives will help to achieve the vision.

Our natural environment and community wellbeing NE1: To protect our most important green assets whilst improving and increasing the provision of open space and green infrastructure links.

NE2: To conserve and enhance biodiversity. NE3: To support the retention and further provision of community facilities and services in Bourne to meet the needs of the population. Earlier consultation has indicated that there are many open spaces in Bourne which the community would like to see protected. The Plan can designate areas of ‘Local Green Space’ of local importance for their recreational value; richness of wildlife; tranquillity; historic significance; or landscape importance.

Earlier consultation indicated that a majority of residents want to enhance the environment for wildlife. Habitat loss and fragmentation is one of the main reasons for biodiversity decline. The Plan can be used to identify and safeguard wildlife corridors to facilitate the movement of species.

Community buildings support a diverse range of uses. Some facilities, such as health care, have been expanded while others, such as schools, have limited additional capacity.

Bourne is under-provided for in some areas of open space, particularly facilities for young people and children and in the amount of informal open space.

Bourne’s unique identity BUI1: To conserve and, where possible, enhance Bourne’s distinctive historic character as a market town.

BUI2: To protect and, where possible, enhance key landscape and townscape features and important views.

There are over seventy listed buildings in the parish and these have considerable protection as part of the planning system.

However, there are other buildings which contribute towards local architectural or historic interest. Their significance can be better taken into account if they are identified on a local list.

alterations to buildings and shopfronts; postwar buildings with flat roofs; the loss of historic street furniture; excess signage/clutter and the loss of important boundary features.

The town centre is the focus of the Conservation Area. Risks to its character include unsympathetic

40

Bourne

The key features of the local landscape are Bourne Woods, the Bourne Eau and Car Dyke. These features need to be protected, along with key views of local landmark buildings and the local landscape.

S E P T E M BE R 2 0 2 0

Building a prosperous economy BPE1: To support the provision of employment opportunities in Bourne.

BPE2: To support uses and proposals that enhance the economic vitality and viability of Bourne town centre.

BPE3: To support the visitor economy while protecting the unique culture, environment and heritage of Bourne.

The Local Plan allocates land for employment on the edge of the town.

Office-based jobs are under-represented in Bourne with many people commuting to work in Peterborough and other towns.

Pavements/roads are relatively narrow, although there are some pedestrianised areas.

While the town centre suffers from the effects of through traffic, the highway authority has no plans for a bypass and it is not therefore possible to safeguard a route as part of the Plan.

Improvements in IT and changes in working patterns mean that there are increasing opportunities for home-working.

The town centre serves the daily shopping needs of local residents. However, it has come under threat from edge-of-town developments, internet shopping and its proximity to larger centres.

Small, independent shops dominate, while there are a significant number of cafes and food outlets.

There is a strong reliance on the car to access the town centre.

Earlier consultation has indicated strong support for developing the visitor economy. There are visitor attractions in the area; several events are held each year; and Bourne has a rich heritage which could help to develop the visitor economy. Bourne provides a convenient touring base. However, most visitors come for the day and the challenge is to encourage them to stay overnight. Accommodation in and around Bourne is, however, quite limited.

Housing our community HOC1: To plan for a minimum of one hundred new homes in sustainable locations which are well connected to local services and facilities.

HOC2: To provide for a mix of house types, sizes and tenures which reflect the housing needs of Bourne.

The Plan must allocate land for a minimum of one hundred dwellings. Work is being undertaken to assess sites put forward for development and we will publish this information once complete to ensure that there can be an informed discussion as to the most appropriate site(s) to allocate for housing in the Plan. We are also taking this opportunity to ask you to let us know of any site that you own and wish to put forward for housing.

S E P TE MB ER 2020

People aged sixty-five and over now account for almost 42% of the local population. It is anticipated that future demand for market housing will primarily be for two and three bedroom properties for new households and from older households wishing to downsize.

Similarly, the demand for affordable housing is expected to be for smaller properties.

Bourne

High quality design HQD1: To encourage walking, cycling and the use of public transport as alternatives to the car.

HQD2: To minimise the impact of new development on the highway network.

HQD3: To promote development that contributes positively to its neighbourhood while embracing high quality design and energy efficiency. Bourne is a relatively compact town, and the distances between the town centre, key services, and residential areas are suitable for many people to be able to walk or cycle.

Several other traffic-related issues have been raised, including road safety near schools, inadequate pedestrian and cycle routes and cycle parking provision, on street parking in residential areas and the volume/speed of traffic on main roads.

design solutions which lack local distinctiveness and could be found anywhere in the country. Earlier consultation has indicated that the local community considers that new buildings should be sympathetic to the traditional style of the area.

Modern housing developments are often criticised for being based on standardised suburban

Next Steps

While energy efficiency requirements for new homes are set out in the Building Regulations, government guidance currently enables higher standards, equivalent to a 19% improvement in energy efficiency, to be included in planning policies. For other forms of development there are no restrictions on setting higher standards than those set by the Building Regulations.

DEEP-IN AESTHETICS: Choose Wisely Latest news from Deep-in Aesthetics’ Julie Higgins:

People all over the UK undergo non-surgical treatments like Botox and fillers every year, but the industry operates almost completely unchecked. Non-surgical cosmetic treatments are everywhere. You might have seen them on your Facebook timeline, on ‘Love Island’ or in the media. Nowadays, you don’t even have to go under the knife to get this enhanced look. In the UK, non-surgical treatments like Botox and dermal fillers – known as ‘tweakments’ – are a £2.75 billion business. Nine out of ten cosmetic procedures performed in the country fall into this category. Though tweakments can include skin peels and laser treatments, the industry thrives off injectables

with serious complications! It is human nature to want to look good, but it is imperative to take the right advice from the correct practitioner, in order to avert potential disasters.

like fillers, which seek to plump up volume in the face. While these cosmetic procedures were once the preserve of the affluent, they are now so widely available that almost everyone seems to be at it, and class now doesn’t make a difference. But it is also a completely unregulated industry. While great results can take years off your face, truly hideous ones can leave you

Thinking of Giving up Smoking?

any people ask me if hypnotherapy can help them give up smoking; well, hypnotherapy has the reputation for being the best way to quit smoking available. The ‘stop smoking hypnotherapy session’ works by first explaining why the brain fools us into

thinking it is acceptable to smoke. The hypnosis part of the stop smoking treatment is a key stage to cementing the change during which the client experiences around forty-five minutes of hypnosis. During the hypnosis process, the subconscious mind effectively “rewires” itself to help the person’s willpower and commitment to smoking cessation. The stop smoking hypnotherapy formula works regardless of how many cigarettes you smoke or how long you have been smoking. The treatment is tailored to you as an individual so you can get the best out of your life and helps you to realise your full potential, in a relaxed comfortable environment.

SURVIVING LOCKDOWN

Progress Report from The Wellhead Practice

s we go into September, it will have been three months since we re-opened on June 1st – a quarter of a year already; where did that time go? It only seems like yesterday that the Prime Minister gave his announcement at the end of March that meant we closed our doors and rang to cancel all patient appointments until further notice. Overnight, I felt like I had taken early retirement! Fast forward ten weeks and, with a new minimalistic practice layout; changes to our operational procedures; a lot of inconvenient but necessary PPE and over four hundred phone calls to screen and re-schedule patient appointments (thank you Fiona for your tenacity on this one!), the Wellhead Practice was lucky enough to be back up-and-running. Without hesitation, our receptionists and clinicians alike, who were able to return to work at this time, sprung into action, implementing the changes needed to adhere to the new guidelines aimed at keeping patients and ourselves safe. A big thank you goes out to each of you. As a result, we managed to get our osteopathy, podiatry and our ear syringing clinics open and, despite shorter days and fewer appointments for social distancing and cleaning reasons, we were able to work through the backlog of patients that passed the new health screening questions. Perhaps to be expected, there was some trepidation in the few days before re-opening. What if patients decide not to show up? How will they be after being isolated for so many weeks

and what will it be like to work in the PPE all day, both physically and interacting with patients? The reality was not as bad as I thought it would be. Yes, it was hot, more tiring, and I was grateful for the shorter day if I am honest, but we could not have asked for more compliant and courageous patients. Some had waited weeks for their appointment, only able to receive advice over the telephone from us, but they took onboard the new set of ‘rules’ that Anne and Karen relentlessly go through with each and every one of them, prior to an appointment. For me, and I’m sure I speak for all the clinicians, it was great getting back to work seeing smiling patients (you can still tell from the eyes!) It certainly made the first few days that bit easier. As September arrives, we remain busy with a good, steady stream of new patients across the clinics. We welcome back Jake, our sports massage therapist, and Amy who completes our team of four podiatrists / chiropodists. We shall hopefully be extending our workday slightly to increase our appointment availability, but will continue to screen all patients at the time of booking and then once more the day before their appointment. Like everyone else, we have our fingers crossed that we shall move to COVIDfree times, sooner rather than later. Until then … stay safe!

LEGAL SERVICES FOLLOWING THE LOCKDOWN ADVICE FROM ROBERT HODSON

A

t Double and Megson in Bourne, we have been working through the pandemic, albeit remotely. The world is now coming ‘back to life’, following a time of many clients having to be at home furloughed or by reference to their health conditions. We have been taking instructions on many matters though, sometimes arranging new wills through windows, but whilst still socially distancing. Everyone hopes that society can now move on without the risk of a so called “second wave” of coronavirus. We have conducted court hearings and meetings either by telephone or Zoom. This particular option is likely to become more popular, moving forward, as the government tries to reduce court attendance in person. It will still be necessary in many cases, none more so than at the Crown Court. Any change to using

more technology is likely to be slow though, and the court buildings that we still have are likely to be used for a long time yet. Whatever changes do come, perhaps moving to digitalising some documents for example, we shall respond to it. Double and Megson has been in the town of Bourne for over forty years, caring for our clients and their legal needs, sometimes three generations of the same family. We prefer a down-to-earth approach to sometimes complex or unusual matters, but which are always extremely important to our clients. We can help you with your legal needs, whether it be propertybased (perhaps buying and selling); how property should be organised and administered; family relationship difficulties; wills and Lasting Power of Attorney or estates; dispute resolution or litigation; or employment and business. We look forward to seeing you soon to assist you with your needs. In the meantime, we trust that you shall “Stay Safe”.

Guitar Repairs and Setups? Dan’s Your Man! New Bourne resident, Dan Nicholls, has recently established a niche service for the musicians of the area.

D

an has been playing guitar for almost twenty years and here he explains how he is intending to use his experience to drive this new venture. “ I became interested in modifying guitars at the age of fifteen and I gained much of my knowledge and skills through endless hours spent in my dad’s garage, working on projects and renovating unloved instruments which I found online. I have spent years playing in bands and am currently in a Melodic Hardcore/Skate Punk band called Nieviem. There are always problems to solve when

finding the perfect live set-up, and it was my pursuit of this which led me down the path that I now find myself on. Guitarists and bassists in and around Peterborough have already been benefitting from my expertise and experience in the industry, so now I’m looking forward to working with a new group of clients. If you have a child who’s not quite showing as much interest in their guitar as you’d like, a set-up is the perfect way to get them interested again. Maybe you have an old guitar lying around, so why not trust me to bring it back to life again for you? I offer a selection of bespoke

INTEREST RATES...

Not what they used to be

A

s I approach my thirtieth birthday this September, I have decided to reflect on the past thirty years, and I think it is fair to say the world is a very different place from what it was in 1990!

BY MATTHEW BIGGS – FINANCIAL PLANNER

‘balanced’ risk portfolio. The green line (B) is a fixed interest rate of 1.5% (the average of the past ten years) and the red line (C) is the Retail Performance Index (RPI), a measure of UK inflation:

The early ’90s was an incredible time for many reasons - some great music, the end of the Cold War, and the emergence of a new generation of tech companies that we all now wish we had purchased some shares in! Interest rates were on the up and, by the end of 1990, the Bank of England base interest rate was nearly 15% - completely unthinkable today! This was great for savers but clearly not so good for those who had a mortgage during those days and, as a borrower, things were pretty painful! In the current climate of low interest rates, we see the reverse of those days in the early ’90s cycle - great for borrowers but, for savers, almost impossible to find sensible levels of return at the bank or building society. So, where is the alternative in these days of fear and uncertainty? How are you going to generate sensible returns to see you through your retirement years, children’s schooling or that holiday of a lifetime? One option you may wish to consider is to invest some of your capital. In the example below, you can see what would have happened if you had invested £10,000 between January 1st 2010 and July 1st 2020. The blue line (A) has been invested in the average

By the start of July 2020, the blue line (A) in now valued at £18,566.02, the green line (B) is valued at £11,691.50 and the red line (C) is valued at £13,426.61. This shows that if you had chosen to save in a vehicle that offered a fixed interest rate of 1.5% over the past ten years, your money would have actually fallen in real term value of £1,784.66, whereas it would have gained £6,054.74 in real term value were it invested over the same ten year period (basically, if your money is below the red line (C) you’re losing money, not making money!). So, perhaps now is time to consider your own planning. With our help, you will be able to understand if making an investment is right for you. If you would like to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of investing your money over the medium to long term, then please contact our office to arrange a FREE initial consultation with one of our highly experienced and friendly financial planners.

Past performance can in no way be seen as a guide to likely future performance; investment values can fall as well as rise; when investing, capital will be placed at risk.

W

ildwood Ovens, based near Stamford, is a wood-fired oven rental service. Founder, Chris Elson, created this fantastic business within just six weeks, after he, unfortunately, lost his day job, during the Covid-19 crisis. Having come from a background in fine-dining restaurants and, more recently, the wider food industry, Chris has always had a huge passion for outdoor cooking and entertaining family and friends. He has had a wood-fired oven for several years and has loved this natural and traditional method of cooking. Chris explains, “It is not only great fun and sociable, but the intense heat locks in nutrients and delivers great flavour and texture to a multitude of ingredients.” Wildwood’s flexible rental programme offers the opportunity to discover the benefits of a wood-fired oven in the convenience of your own home or holiday destination. They are currently offering two and five-night rentals and a free delivery within a twenty-five mile radius of Stamford. (A charge is made for further afield). Child Arrangements in the time of Covid

Dominic Cummings’ now infamous road trip to Durham saw the nation wrangle with the rights and wrongs of how parents should manage childcare during the coronavirus pandemic.

M

any separated families have struggled with child arrangements since lockdown. In March, the president of the Family Division, Sir Andrew McFarlane, issued guidance on the social distancing rules for contact arrangements for separated families as they applied during the strictest phase of the lockdown. The guidance states unequivocally “where parents do not live in the same household, children under 18 can be moved between their parents’ homes”.

restrictions, which also may cause the letter of a court order to be varied, the parents should keep to the spirit of the order by making safer alternative arrangements for the child. This might have to be, on a temporary basis, regular video calls instead of meeting in person. If you have questions about what the arrangements should be for your children in the current climate, consult a family law specialist who will be able to advise you.

While this guidance established a clear exception to the government’s “stay at home” requirement, that did not mean that children have to be moved between parental homes. Even in the context of today’s more relaxed rules, the decision as to whether a child should move between households is ultimately the child’s parents to take. In practice, this means that parents should generally be advised to continue to comply with a court order, if you have one, or your agreed routine, provided no one in either household shows signs of having Covid-19 or if they do, doesn’t pose any unnecessary risk to a vulnerable person. As Sir Andrew’s guidance emphasised, parental responsibility lies with the parents of the children, not with the court. In practice, this means that where the normal arrangements are disrupted, parents should be advised to discuss matters constructively with the aim of agreeing a solution that works for everyone. This does not mean taking advantage of a spurious Covid reason to interrupt contact, as ultimately it is the child who suffers from being prevented from spending time with the separated parent. Mayor COUNCILLOR COLIN PATTISON

Words from the Mayor Hello Everyone,

I trust this finds you all fit and well and enjoying the sunny weather. On August 1st, my wife Fiona and I were kindly invited along to conduct the formal re-opening of the Bourne Pyramid Club on West Street. Like all bars and clubs, they had been forced to close their doors back in March, so it was an absolute delight to be able to “cut the ribbon” and get another club/business up and running. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there in what is such a lovely, welcoming atmosphere and surroundings, for snooker, pool and darts players alike. Many thanks to the club’s committee for inviting us along, but in particular for making us so welcome on the day to Gary Cooke (Chairman) and Kelly Wickes (Treasurer). That was a great and positive (remember our key word!) way to start August. This was

followed up by a more formal and sombre occasion on August 15th to commemorate VJ 75 Day. My wife and I attended a very short service as an act of remembrance and homage to the tens of thousands of service personnel from across the UK and Commonwealth who fought and died in the war against Japan, including all those who were held prisoners of war by the Japanese. On a personal note here, this includes one of my longdeceased family members who did not get repatriated back to the UK until 1947 and was basically unrecognisable from the brave young chap who had gone off to war! The service commenced with an address by the Royal British Legion, Bourne Branch President, Lt Col Tom Hamilton (retired). A wreath was then laid at the foot of the Cenotaph on behalf of the parish of Bourne and then the Act of Homage was read, followed by Jasmin playing the Last Post. Two minutes’ silence was impeccably observed and, right on the stroke of 11am, with the bells chiming from the Abbey Church behind us, Jasmin then played “Reveille” on her trumpet and I read the “Kohima Epitaph” to conclude the service. Thanks go to the Bourne Branch of the Royal British Legion for organising the event; to Matt Bostock at Roadphone Communication for the use of their mobile speaker system; to all the members of the public

who attended, including some veteran service personnel; but particularly to Bourne United Charities for giving their permission for this event to go ahead.

Council News: The team preparing the Parish’s Neighbourhood Plan are still beavering away and, as you will see from other pages in this issue, they are trying to encourage residents to take part in a consultation entitled ‘Vision and Objectives’. For those of you interested in ensuring a good future for the town and surrounding villages, please take the time to visit the Neighbourhood Plan website and complete the questionnaire. We can make a difference! Finally, let’s keep upbeat and look forward to better times ahead. Remember - Covid-19 doesn’t spread itself, its people who spread the virus! Take care. I

t’s the mid-1960s, Queen Elizabeth II is entering her second decade on the throne, Labour’s Harold Wilson tussles with Edward Heath’s Conservative party, and Beatle-mania has reached the sleepy little town of Bourne (estimated population 5,370 on April 1st 1963), some of whose residents would have already made the journey to the Embassy Theatre in Peterborough to see the “Fab Four” play live. According to a fascinating pocket guide, issued “by authority of the Bourne Urban District Council” and available at the time for one shilling, (five pence in pre-decimal terms) “Bourne is a town in which one may live a happy, healthy and contented life.” Now, over half a century later, this guide continues to furnish the reader with much information that has remained so, right up to the present day, as the two following paragraphs testify. The historical elements are, of course, unlikely to be altered very much by the passage of time. “A typical interesting Lincolnshire market town, consisting of historical remains and sites, Bourne is pleasantly situated at the foot of the rising ground that formed the shores of the North Sea centuries ago, and is now the western boundary of the Fens.” “Many old parts of the town were destroyed by two disastrous fires in 1605 and 1637 … the whole of Manor Street (now Manor Lane) in the former, and the greater part of Eastgate including Victoria Place Potteries, which had manufactured pots since Roman times, in the later year. Several buildings escaped however and still remain.” It is when the everyday comings and goings of the town are described in the guide that we begin to see just how much has changed over the decades. For example, we are informed …

62

Bourne

“A pleasant old-world town, Bourne has four main streets; its length from east to west is over two miles, and the breadth from north to south about the same. In the junction of the four streets is the Market Place where a stall market is held every Thursday and Saturday. Overlooking the Market Place stands the Town Hall, an interesting and unusual building, built in 1820 to replace earlier buildings erected by the Wake family and the first Lord Burleigh. The local petty sessions are held fortnightly in the Town Hall, and the quarter sessions periodically, an arrangement which dates back to the fourteenth century. Next door to the Town Hall is the Burghley Arms Hotel (until recently the Bull Hotel), the site where William Cecil was born in 1520. He was the man who later became Lord Burleigh, the Lord Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I. Converted into an inn over three hundred years ago, it was one of the old posting houses. Also in the Market Place is the Angel Hotel, formerly an old coaching house.”

CARLIE WOOD - Animal Physiotherapist

A

s a nation of animal lovers, we are more than happy to care for our four-legged friends, be it feeding, exercising or maintaining their health and wellbeing. But what about animal physiotherapy? There’s a very talented young lady in Bourne, currently a Lecturer in Animal Management at Brooksby Melton College in Leicestershire, who is now looking to establish herself in this very niche field. Carlie Wood BSc, Dip.A.Physio, IAAT, is in the process of moving away from her teaching role in the near future to offer her services as a mobile therapist, so that sessions can be carried out in the comfort of the animal’s home, thus helping to reduce the stress the animal may feel. Carlie qualified in January with her Level 6 Diploma (equivalent to a degree) and is now a fully qualified physiotherapist and a member of the prestigious International Association of Animal Therapists. She

has already over fifteen years’ experience in animal handling, welfare, behaviour and rehabilitation. Services offered include the use of two machines, (a Long Wave Ultrasound and a Pulse Electro-magnetic field Therapy Machine), along with massage, stretching, and a range of motion and exercise techniques. With these methods (and working alongside the veterinarian), Carlie can rehabilitate orthopaedic conditions such as hip/elbow dysplasia, ruptured cruciate ligaments and patella luxation, neurological conditions such as intervertebral disc disease, degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis and maintaining general health and fitness for sporting animals. Carlie is fully insured, canine and human first-aid trained, and her current availability is evenings and weekends. With time, her goal is to establish her own practice and a permanent surgery. Get in touch with her today on 07738 682 080.

Hot Spots

I

Wise Words By Deirdre Wilson

n these times of lockdown and travel restrictions, many of us are dreaming of the hot spots we would love to visit - Bali, the Maldives, Skegness – but for vets the term “hot spot” has an entirely different meaning.

Hot spots appear mainly on dogs especially in warm, sultry weather. They are patches of raw, red moist skin and can range from an inch in diameter to several inches, forming a large sore patch on your dog’s skin. The first sign many owners notice is a patch of hard, sticky fur where the skin has oozed and this has dried the fur together. Usually, the dog is very itchy in this area and scratching at it makes the sore worse and it can get very large, very quickly. It can also be painful and dogs can be reluctant to let owners look at it. Probably, the most common breed of dog to get hot spots are Golden Retrievers but it can occur in any type of dog or cat.

What causes a hot spot? A small bite such as a flea or midge bite causes an itch. An underlying allergy can cause your dog to itch and even joint pain will mean that your dog over-licks the area in an attempt to soothe the pain. As your dog scratches at the spot, he introduces bacteria under the skin and infection starts to spread. We usually clip the affected area and owners are often astonished at how far the lesion has spread. The good

64

Bourne

news is that most of the time the damage is superficial and can be treated with topical skin disinfectants. Those prescribed by your vet will kill the bacteria and antibiotic creams are also very useful. Never put anything on the wound that will sting – the skin is raw and sore, so your dog is unlikely to be happy with you! Some hot spots are very painful and require a course of oral antibiotics and even steroids to help them heal. Hot spots on the face may mean there is an ear infection and the ears also have to be treated to clear all of the lesions. It is important to keep your pets clear of fleas as they are the culprit in at least 30% of all skin cases presented to vets. You may never see the fleas on your pet and often if only one jumps on your dog, feeds, causes an itchy spot, then jumps off again waiting for the next victim, you will never, ever see the little blighter. So, always, always protect your pet against parasites, no matter how clean you think they are and keep the flea treatment going through the hot weather especially. Many of the veterinary spot-ons for fleas will also kill ear and skin mites as these can be implicated in causing hot spots too. So every time you’re dreaming of those exotic places you’d love to visit – put a reminder in the calendar to flea your pet as well.

Book Review

Untamed

Knife Edge

BY GLENNON DOYLE Who were you before the world told you who to be? Part inspiration, part memoir, ‘Untamed’ explores the joy and peace we discover when we stop striving to meet the expectations of the world, and instead dare to listen to, and trust in, the voice deep inside us. From the beloved New York Times bestselling author, speaker and activist, Glennon Doyle. Soulful and uproarious, forceful and tender, ‘Untamed’ is both an intimate memoir and a galvanising wake-up call. It is the story of how one woman learned that a responsible mother is not one who slowly dies for her children, but one who shows them how to fully live. It is also the story of how each of us can begin to trust ourselves enough to set boundaries, make peace with our bodies, honour our anger and heartbreak, and unleash our truest, wildest instincts. ‘Untamed’ shows us how to be brave and, as Glennon insists, “The braver we are, the luckier we get.”

BY SIMON MAYO A sweltering London rush hour. And in the last twenty-nine minutes, seven people have been murdered. In a series of coordinated attacks, seven men and women across London have been targeted. For journalist, Famie Madden, the horror unfolds as she arrives for the morning shift. The victims have one thing in common: they make up the investigations team at the news agency where Famie works. The question everyone is asking: what were they working on that could prompt such brutal devastation? As Famie starts to receive mysterious messages, she must find out whether she is being warned of the next attack, or being told that she will be the next victim...

The Killings at Kingfisher Hill EDITED BY SOPHIE HANNAH The world’s greatest detective, Hercule Poirot legendary star of Agatha Christie’s ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ and ‘Death on the Nile’ - returns to solve a fiendish new mystery. Hercule Poirot is travelling by luxury passenger coach from London to the exclusive Kingfisher Hill estate, where Richard Devonport has summoned him to prove that his fiancee, Helen, is innocent of the murder of his brother, Frank. But there is a strange condition attached to this request: Poirot must conceal his true reason for being there.

The coach is forced to stop when a distressed woman demands to get off, insisting that if she stays in her seat, she will be murdered. Although the rest of the journey passes without anyone being harmed, Poirot’s curiosity is aroused, and his fears are later confirmed when a body is discovered with a macabre note attached... Could this new murder and the peculiar incident on the coach be clues to solving the mystery of who killed Frank Devonport? And if Helen is innocent, can Poirot find the true culprit in time to save her from the gallows?

Advice

Citizens Advice South Lincolnshire is Seeking New Volunteers!

T

he advice that Citizens Advice gives can help to change lives. Since March this year, a large number of the volunteers working at Citizens Advice South Lincolnshire have switched seamlessly to home-working, so the organisation is now looking to recruit more volunteers from all over the area.

role. Volunteers need: an ability to understand information; a good level of literacy and numeracy; to be good at listening and enjoy helping people; to be open-minded and not judge clients; and to be familiar with using keyboard skills and searching the internet. We would welcome applications from all ages and backgrounds.

In the past year, the interest from people in Bourne and the Deepings has been particularly good, and Training Officer, Megan Millar is hoping this trend will continue.

Further information is available on our website at www.citizensadvicesouthlincs.org.uk where there is also an application form. We are recruiting in August and September, with a view to starting training in October. If anyone has six hours a week available and wants the chance to contribute to such an important local service, we look forward to hearing from you.”

The number of enquiries is approaching the level seen prior to lockdown, when there were more volunteers available. The current team have upped their hours to satisfy the current demand and look forward to new volunteers joining. Megan has devised a comprehensive online training programme for new volunteers, which will give them the skills they need to help people deal with their problems and deliver a high-quality service. Although face-to-face advice is not being offered at the moment, volunteers will work on the telephone, or via e-mail and webchat, from their own homes. Other roles available include research and campaign workers and Trustees, as well as advisors. Supervision and support for volunteers is available every day, with two staff on duty at all times. Megan said, “You don’t need any specific qualifications or experience to train for the

K & S Auto Service Centre – Two Years in the Town

I

t’s two years now since Steve Pulley and brother Kevin established their motor servicing business on Meadow Drove in Bourne. Having met them both and hearing of their backgrounds, (Steve with over forty years as a motor engineer in his native Stamford and then Grantham; Kevin about to retire from his long and distinguished career in the Police Force and joining his brother in their new venture) I soon came to appreciate their work ethic and enthusiasm, facing the challenges to come. It wasn’t long before Steve was entrusted with my son’s VW Polo which was in need of major surgery. The whole process, from helping me to get the ailing vehicle on to the ramp, making all the necessary moves under the bonnet and then handing me a bill which lacked too many big numbers, made these two customers particularly happy, especially Dad! Kevin and Steve have now built up a strong customer base, with an estimated 75% being referrals from other very satisfied customers. All through the recent lockdown, their doors remained open and many key workers were able

to keep mobile, thanks to K & S’s hard work and determination. They both subscribe to the opinion that the person always comes first, then the vehicle. That and the knowledge that your car is in safe hands and you’re getting a fair deal make this a partnership well worth seeking out … if you’ve yet to do so! Social media is playing a large part in their success – word spreads and the amount of hits on Facebook and ‘outstanding’ recommendations speak volumes for the very amiable Pulley brothers.
