Cycle through history on the western portion of the amazing Erie Canalway Trail! Known as “The Canal That Made America,” the Erie Canal was built starting in 1817 and was the most ambitious public works project of its time. Enjoy fl at riding along the canalway region (and keep an eye on the website for a new tour on the eastern part of the trail).
ITINERARY
Start on the outskirts of Buff alo with a pleasant spin along the Tonawanda waterfront — with views of the Niagara River and not far from famous Niagara Falls. Then venture into the more rural areas dotted with charming
villages sustained by mom-and-pop restaurants and classic stores — many over 100 years old.
Marvel at the beautiful natural scenery, remarkable U.S. history, and the incredible aqueducts, locks, lift bridges and canal parks of the Erie Canal greenways.
As you pedal, enjoy the passing boats and those docked along the canal. See abundant bird life, such as herons, ospreys and kingfi shers. Admire the wooden lock gates, arching bridges and other feats of engineering — many of which still date from the 19th century.
Stop at waterfall in Rochester and cycle all the way to Syracuse. Then we shuttle you back to the start near Buff alo.
