BIKE INFORMATION

HELMETS: Helmets are required and are made available to you at no charge. If you have a helmet you like, we encourage you to bring your own.

BRINGING YOUR OWN BIKE: You may bring a personal bike if it meets local regulations. If it is especially large or an e-bike, please check ahead of time to make sure it is allowed on all lands on the tour and that we can transport it, if needed. Your bicycle should be geared for hills and be thoroughly checked by a professional bike mechanic before you arrive. Please bring any special parts (such as unusual tube sizes or tools). And please check with our offi ce about what types of bikes are recommended for each tour.

TYPES OF BIKES WE OFFER: Examples of bikes you can use for free on our tours are pictured below. You can choose a hybrid bike, a step-through hybrid bike, gravel bike, road bike (in some cases), or an e-bike (see below for more details).* International tours may have diff erent bikes.

Hybrid Hybrid Step-Through Gravel Bike E-bike

HYBRID BIKES: are available on most tours (mountain bikes are provided in New Zealand and Vietnam). They feature a more upright biking position and wider tires for occasional gravel and for rougher paved roads. In the U.S., we have Specialized Sirrus and Trek FX2 gravel bikes in both step-through and step-over styles.

ROAD BIKES: are available on a limited basis for certain sizes.

GRAVEL BIKES: are available on our U.S. tours and feature drop handlebars and wider tires similare to those on our hybrid bikes. These bikes also have gearing to tackle any hills on the tour. We also have narrower road bike tires for gravel bikes for tours with longer distance road riding. Our gravel bikes are the Diamondback Haajo 3.

*E-BIKES: We have a limited number of e-bikes (pedal assist) available on a fi rst-come, fi rst-served basis at no extra charge (for a fee in Chile and New Zealand). They are not available in Vietnam or Maine.** Contact the offi ce to check availability. These bikes give you an added boost so you can consider hillier tours, and they allow couples with diff ering abilities to ride together.

**Coast of Maine: E-bikes are currently prohibited for tour groups to use on the carriage roads in Acadia National Park on our Coast of Maine tour — if a disability prohibits other bikes, you may petition the park superintendent for permission to use an e-bike.

PEDALS & SADDLES: You are welcome to bring your own clip-in pedals (and matching shoes) and/or your personal saddle (seat with or without the seat post), and we will be happy to install them on our bike for you. We also off er toe cages. Unless you request otherwise, we will install fl at pedals on your bike.
