DISCOVERY Children’s Museum Helps Children Find Joy In Books Storyland: A Trip Through Childhood Favorites™ Traveling Exhibit Features Seven Beloved Children’s Books Through January 4 As children prepare for another school year of reading and writing, DISCOVERY Children’s Museum presents its own special travel exhibit learning environment aimed to build literacy skills in Nevada’s youngest learners. According to the National School Readiness Indicators Initiative, early literacy is a key indicator of school readiness in young children. As children develop, literacy is highly correlated with school achievement and is essential to lifelong learning. The museum’s latest traveling exhibit is literacy-based and provides children with essential book-based experiences while equipping their parents with messaging and tools to promote literacy. Storyland: A Trip Through Childhood Favorites will run through January 4, 2015. Storyland transforms seven beloved and award-winning picture books – The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter; The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats; Where’s Spot? by Eric Hill; If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff; Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault; Abuela by Arthur Dorros; and Tuesday by David Wiesner – into three dimensional, bilingual (English and Spanish) play and learning environments that highlight the six pre-reading skills defined by the Public Library Association and Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association: disposition to read, print awareness, letter knowledge, sound awareness, vocabulary, and narrative skills and comprehension. Children can explore literacy skills and concepts through imaginative, interactive experiences and are encouraged to reflect on their Storyland experience by creating a drawing inspired by the books and writing a caption, title or story. A digital Drawing Cam captures the paper image and visitors can add it to an electronic gallery of other postcards for visitors to see and email it home as a souvenir of their experience at Las Vegas’ favorite children’s museum. The Museum is collaborating with Spread the Word Nevada and will be holding a Book Drive for this literacy-dedicated non-profit during the entire run of the traveling exhibit. If visitors bring new or gently used books for donation to the Book Drive they will receive a $2 discount off general admission.

Military dependent family members receive a $6 per person admission rate which is a 50% discount off the museum’s daily admission price. Discovery Children’s Museum proudly presents The Masquerade Ball on Friday, November 7, 2014 at The Venetian in the Palazzo Congress Center. This year’s fundraising event will be a costume-masquerade ball theme where guests are encouraged to attend in costume wearing a mask.

A HEART OF OUR OWN!

The evening will open with a lively silent auction, raﬄe and specialty cocktails starting at 6:30 pm; with dinner and a live auction to follow at 8 pm. Christian Kolberg will emcee the event and conduct the live auction and you won’t want to miss the “must-see” entertainment.

DISCOVERY Children’s Museum recently was gifted the Michael Godard “Color The World With Your Imagination” heart from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Traveling Hearts of Las Vegas 2013 Collection. It’s permanently displayed at the entrance to the museum.

The Magic of Discovery Masquerade Ball 2014 will recognize Las Vegas Sands Foundation as the recipient of the Great Friend to Kids Award. They have been tremendous supporters of the Museum and were our first million dollar donor to the Capital Campaign.

The colorful statue is three-dimensional and five feet tall weighing in at 400 pounds. It was crafted by local artist Michael Godard who was inspired to become involved with St. Jude’s through his family’s journey with pediatric cancer.

Tickets are $500 each or table sponsorships range from $5,000 to $25,000. For more information call 702.382.3445.

Godard had this to say about his creation, “This heart celebrates human life, the imagination each of us is born with, which is the child in all of us that never ages. We are the only species on the planet with the ability to draw. Crayons introduce us to our first opportunity to explore and creatively express our feelings and thoughts with color and shapes. Although each of us is as different as every color in a crayon box, art is a universal language around the globe that everyone can share regardless of age, ethnicity, or social status. Whenever we are sharing the ideas in our hearts with others, we are creating a colorful future. On the wings of imagination hopes and dreams become reality.”

DISCOVERY Children’s Museum Oﬀers Complimentary Admission to Nonproﬁts Nonprofits have the opportunity to visit the museum in the fall months. In an effort to help those who help others DISCOVERY Children’s Museum offers complimentary admissions to local nonprofit organizations through its Fall Nonprofit Admission Program. Organizations can apply by submitting an application with information that includes their mission and how they plan to use the free passes.

All information for application can be found on the museum’s website – DiscoveryKidsLV.org - under the “Plan A Visit” tab. This year’s deadline for submissions is closed. Submissions for next year are now being accepted through September 3, 2015.

Recipients include: Centro de Adoracion Familiar (COF), Mommy & Me West, The Ogden Foundation, Kids’ Cooperative, Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation, Safe Nest, Southern Nevada Regional Housing, Club Christ Ministries, S.A.F.E House and Bamboo Bridges.

FALL PROGRAMS Visit Toddler Town (TT), Young At Art (YAA), It’s Your Choice (IYC), Patents Pending (PP) and Solve It! to participate in engaging and integrated arts activities and experiences. TT feature experiences developmentally appropriate for our youngest visitors, those 5 years and younger, and all other areas feature experiences designed for a variety of ages, including adults!

October 4 – October 10 A Tribute to Ancient Cities

TT – Build an ancient city in celebration of our new Ancient City exhibit in the Solve It! gallery. YAA – Celebrate Ancient Cities as you discover mysterious artifacts inspired by the Mayan culture! Patents Pending – Become a Maya engineer as you build a replica bridge like the one believed to be at the Usumacinta River.

October 11 – October 17 Prepare for Halloween

TT – Practice the art of basket weaving in honor of the Paiute Tribe. YAA – Create traditional crafts and learn about the culture of the Paiute tribe! Solve It! – Explore the properties of the Piñon Nut and the processes the Paiutes used to collect these nutritious pine nuts.

TT – Create a colorful fall tree in celebration of the season! YAA – Welcome the new season as we cool off with some fall-themed crafts! Solve It! – Fall brings many tasty fruits; investigate some of the properties of these fruits with fun experiments.

TT – Design a spectacular sugar skull mask inspired by El Dia de los Muertos! YAA – ¡Celebramos! Discover Day of the Dead with art activities inspired by this Mexican holiday!

NOVEMBER – Native American Heritage Celebration November 8 – November 14 Celebrating the Paiute Tribe

TT – In anticipation of Halloween, create a spooky bat to take flight into the night! YAA – Let your spooky side show as you discover Halloween-themed art activities! Patents Pending – Become a spider web engineer. Learn all about how a spider spins it web. Take your chance at the Spider Web Engineer Challenge.

TT – Come and celebrate Nevada’s 150th anniversary with us and create a beautiful Mountain Bluebird in recognition of the state bird of Nevada. YAA – Celebrate the 150-year anniversary of the founding of the State of Nevada as you create artwork based on objects from Nevada’s rich history! Solve It! – Travel through Nevada’s long history with mining silver and good. Find out how science and the drive to find new methods to find gold have led to current techniques. OCTOBER – An Eclectic Mix – Celebrating the Fall Season, Nevada, Halloween and Los Dias de Los Muertos!

October 18 – October 24 Welcome the Fall Season

IYC – Each year around El Dia de los Muertos, the sky over parts of Mexico becomes a flurry of orange. That flurry of orange is the annual migration of the Monarch Butterfly. Explore the science behind the mysterious Monarchs and their migration.

November 15 – November 21 Rock Art and Petroglyphs

TT – Create Aboriginal Dot Paintings in recognition of this ancient form of rock art. YAA – Create your own petroglyphs and pictographs as you discover the history of rock art! Solve It! – Explore different techniques for dating rock art.

November 22 – November 27 Celebrating the Navajo Tribe

TT – Recreate a page from the children’s story “Navajo ABC,” by author Lucy Tapahanso, in honor of the Navajo Tribe. YAA – Discover the history of the Navajo nation as you create traditional Navajo crafts! PP – Learn about Fred Begay’s journey from the Navajo reservation to becoming a thermonuclear physicist. 4

DECEMBER – A Nutcracker Extravaganza! November 28 – December 5 The Nutcracker Characters

TT – Design a dazzling crown fit for a king! YAA – Join in the festivities by constructing your very own cast of Nutcracker puppets. PP – Become a nutcracker mechanic and explore all of its moving pieces to figure out how it works.

December 6-December 12 A Winter Wonderland

TT – Create a beautiful winter wonderland and design delicate snowflakes! YAA – A winter wonderland wouldn’t be complete without snowflakes! Construct a variety of snowflakes to create your own winter wonderland at home. PP – Take a journey to The Land of Snow. Explore the properties of snow through some fun experiments.

December 13 – December 19 Dance and Movement

TT – Design a pair of dazzling dance shoes in the spirit of dance! YAA - Let music and movement inspire you as you create your own dance-themed art! PP – Investigate the physics of ballet and explore.

December 20 – December 26 The Nutcracker Set and Costume Design

TT – Construct a scene from The Nutcracker. YAA – Create costumes for the cast of characters from The Nutcracker! PP – Take on the challenge of designing a functional ballet stage.

December 27 – January 2 Nutcracker Ballet – A Tribute to the Music

TT – Construct a merry little mouse in celebration of the Nutcracker Ballet. YAA – Create musical instruments inspired by Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite! PP – Discover what sound waves look like for different types of music as we use a Rubens’ Tube to make flames dance.

Nevada’s Sesquicentennial Celebration DISCOVERY Museum Style October 31 – November 7

In recognition of Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration, the museum will commemorate the state’s 150 birthday with special programming October 31 – November 7, 2014. Nevada’s diverse history will be recognized throughout the museum and all visitors will receive a $1.50 discount off general admission on Friday, Oct. 31, 2014.

These experiences include decorating the four versions of the state flag throughout history, the state seal, and recreating the state fossil, the Ichthyasaur! Visitors will also hear “Home Means Nevada” as they paint a beautiful Nevada landscape and create a Desert Tortoise from recycled materials!

ALL THINGS NUTCRACKER For a second year, the magic of “All Things Nutcracker” will be felt this December as we collaborate with Nevada Ballet Theatre (NBT) again. Families will learn about The Nutcracker through specially planned programming throughout the museum (see Programming Calendar) including constructing your very own scene from The Nutcracker and Nutcracker puppets, too. And you won’t want to miss seeing music from The Nutcracker come to life using a Rubens’ Tube. Look for special appearances and opportunities to meet Nutcracker characters throughout the holiday season and you won’t want to miss marching in The Nutcracker Closing Parade! The museum in collaboration with Nevada Ballet Theatre will host a Nutcracker Extravaganza on Black Friday,

WATER WORLD

Water World, the museum’s guests favorite gallery, allows visitors to play and work with water in a variety of handson ways including: launching balls into winding tracks, guiding boats through a lock system, fitting together plastic pipes redirecting water flow, feeding balls into the vortex and using air blowers to create water currents. The gallery’s design is based on the Hoover Dam, with interpretations of the Dam, Lake Mead and the Bypass Bridge. Related activities demonstrate around the Hoover Dam
