SPRING 2015

Goose Bumps! The Science of Fear runs through May 3 at DISCOVERY Children’s Museum Through fun, interactive challenges visitors can experience fear in a safe environment and discover the science behind their physical and emotional responses. Explore these thematic areas in the exhibit and find out what you are afraid of! Faces of Emotion – Visitors can explore the facial expressions of fear and other emotions that may be universal in humans. Cutting edge software is used to analyze and identify guests’ facial expressions. Fear in the Wild – A put-yourself-in-thepicture immersive video game allows guests to explore common responses to danger, including freeze, flight and fight. Visitors will discover how fear helps all animals, including humans, stay alive. Fear and Society – Some fears spread beyond the individual and become stronger as more people become afraid. A short film and exhibit displays how our collective fears are represented and transmitted through media and pop culture. Coping with Fear – While a certain amount of fear is normal, some anxieties can get out of control. Visitors can find out what fears are common at different stages in life and learn about ways to help children move past their fears. They can also watch interviews with patients suffering from anxiety disorders to understand what happens when the fear system goes awry.

SUPPORT DISCOVERY ON WHEELS – HOUSE CALLS

MOBILE INTERACTIVE HEALTH SCIENCES TAILORED TO EACH GRADE LEVEL than 16,000 Clark County School District elementary school students per year by bringing experiments, medical equipment and grade-level specifi c health science curriculum to Clark County schools. This leads to an interest in STEM subjects and related careers, and students making better informed health, fi tness and nutrition decisions particularly as it pertains to obesity and cardiovascular health. Do you remember the fi rst time you thought “I like science?” Or maybe when you had that “wow” moment that made you realize a career in science and medicine would be fun and interesting and challenging? These are the moments experienced daily by students taking part in DISCOVERY Children’s Museum’s DISCOVERY On Wheels - House Calls, a program that takes fun, interactive, hands-on science-based health and wellness learning out to Las Vegas schools. This school outreach program works – or as 5th grade teacher Christine Loraelli said, “If my students can touch it and feel it, it has much more impact than if they just read it in a textbook.” House Calls began in partnership with longtime medical professional Dr. Joe Lapan more than four years ago to overcome the health, wellness and educational challenges faced by Southern Nevada youth by creating a fun, hands-on health science program focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) concepts. Through the program, the museum enhances the health science education of more

Open to Kindergarten to 5th grade classes, the program: 1. Intervenes in children’s lives through STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) learning that includes hands-on, interactive experiences where students get to take apart, put together, explore and experiment with medical-grade exhibits, displays and props – all within an intimate, focused and safe environment where children can explore and develop a better understanding of unfamiliar but very relevant science concepts. 2. Explains in clear-cut language and through interactive activities how to make the informed health and wellness choices that will help them avoid the dangers of diabetes and diseases of the cardiovascular and circulatory systems. 3. Strengthens all of Nevada through helping reduce the impact of poor health choices on our state’s cultural, medical and economic systems. Please help us preserve this much needed and valuable outreach program to the often underserved and low-income

TIFFERNEY WHITE NAMED PERMANENT CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER/PRESIDENT AT DISCOVERY CHILDREN'S MUSEUM After an extensive search, DISCOVERY Children’s Museum Board of Trustee Chairman Troy Moser confirmed the appointment of Tifferney White as permanent Chief Executive Officer/ President for the Museum. Prior to that, she was Deputy Director since 2009 and began her employment in 2007. “Over the last several months, Tifferney has been the driving force behind the museum’s transition, as well as directing the day-to-day operations, said Moser.

“The Board of Trustees are very excited to welcome Tifferney as the new CEO.” Prior to her position with the Museum, White was the Director of Community Outreach – ScienceReach and Science Clubs at Discovery Place, Inc. in Charlotte, North Carolina. White has a BS in Chemistry and a BA in Psychology from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC.

students in the Las Vegas community, many of whom also battle health issues linked to poor health and wellness choices. With a $1500.00 gift, you could sponsor House Calls for two days to two different schools (one entire grade level) reaching nearly 400 students. This would cover the cost of providing the in-class time for the House Calls Presenter, a fully trained and certified teacher. Each presentation also includes time for students to take apart, put together, explore and experiment with interactive, hands-on medical-grade exhibits, displays and props. Our Presenter, Amanda, is a wonderful experienced facilitator, she sees between 4-6 classes a day, five days a week. “For that hour I am the teacher,” Amanda says. “Because

schools lack the time and resources to teach much science, it’s often these students first exposure to science and the fun of science.” If you are interested in supporting DISCOVERY On Wheels – House Call please call 702.382.3445 and ask for Director of Development Matt Gormley.

AWARENESS MONTH

APRIL – An Eclectic Mix – Celebrating National Autism Awareness Month and Exploring New Technology!

This month’s celebration was established to highlight the growing need for concern and awareness about autism. The Autism Society has been celebrating National Autism Awareness Month since the 1970s. The United States recognizes April as a special opportunity to educate the public about autism and issues within the autism community. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others. Autism is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a “spectrum disorder” that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees.

On April 4 join us for a museum-wide celebration of the smallest science, NanoDays! e April 4 – 10 e The Biggest Event for the Smallest Science!

TT – Investigate the properties of a cornstarch and water mixture and learn how similar nanomaterials can be used to create protective clothing. YAA – Celebrate all things small as you discover the new frontier of nano-sized art! PP – Join us as we learn all about how non-scientists study snowflakes to understand self-assembling systems. During the program, watch videos of snowflakes growing and observe real ice crystals growing in a chilled chamber.

This year, DISCOVERY Children’s Museum is joining in the celebration of National Autism Awareness Month! The celebration represents an excellent opportunity to promote autism awareness, autism acceptance and to draw attention to the tens of thousands facing an autism diagnosis each year. Please visit our website for the schedule of engaging speakers supporting this month’s celebration. Also, the weeks of April 11, April 18 and April 25 themed activities will be developed to also accommodate children and families with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

SPECIAL THANKS TO NEVADA BIG GIVE DONORS

Thank you for your support of DISCOVERY Children's Museum by giving where you live!

SERVING CLARK COUNTY STUDENTS Our arts education programs are funded, in part, by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

The Clark County School District Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky (right) and Trustees recently recognized DISCOVERY Children’s Museum for our service to the students of the school district. Museum Board Chair Troy Moser (4th from right) and Past Board Chair Judy Cebulko (middle) proudly accepted the award on behalf of the museum. We love all the children we help educate!
