WINTER 2015
Find out what you’re afraid of when Goose Bumps! The Science of Fear premieres at DISCOVERY Children’s Museum on January 31 Why do our hearts race, our knees shake, and our bodies sweat when we are scared? Goose Bumps! The Science of Fear, a new exhibit developed by the California Science Center, explores this universal emotion that can save our lives. Through fun, interactive challenges, guests can experience fear in a safe environment and discover the science behind their physical and emotional responses. The exhibit opens Saturday, January 31 and runs through Sunday, May 3, 2015. Fear is usually viewed as a weakness, but it’s actually life saving! Why do we respond the way we do when faced with a potentially dangerous situation? Goose Bumps! will help you answer that question.
interviews with people suffering from anxiety disorders, and get a view of their struggle with these fear diseases as well as their hopes for the future.
For more information visit DiscoveryKidsLV.org. Take the Challenge Course to face four common fears: those of animals, electric shock, loud noises, and falling. The exhibit’s curator, David Bibas, explains, “These represent three different types of fear—innate, learned, and what experts call prepared fears, which we acquire very easily.” Observe others being scared through windows into the Challenge Course rooms, but beware—fear can be contagious! Learn to recognize some signs of fear in others: hesitation, anticipation, and being easily startled. When afraid, do your eyes widen, or are they tightly shut? Next, meet Mr. Goose Bumps, a larger-than-life figure that comes alive through captivating, kid-friendly animation and shows how the brain and body work together preparing us for “fight or flight,” when we face danger. Investigate brain slices from different animals, and find the amygdala, which orchestrate responses to a threat. Kids can color the brain structures involved in the fear system at the art station or play a domino game highlighting the fear pathways in the brain. You can also learn about common fears we have as we age and how to help kids cope with their own fears. View compelling

CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEARNING BY REMOVING BARRIERS THROUGH ADMISSION SUBSIDIES Every day is an opportunity for new discovery at DISCOVERY Children’s Museum where the core areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) plus arts and culture are infused throughout the 58,000-squarefoot state-of-the-art museum. Research shows that hands-on, interactive learning experiences and imaginative play in informal settings like museums help reinforce many important topics and concepts to which children learn in classrooms and books. The opportunity for children to access these informal learning opportunities can be limited due to finances. Southern Nevada families impacted by the Las Vegas Valley’s recent economic downturn are unable to afford to take their children to cultural
institutions. Clark County School District (CCSD) faces fiscal barriers as well, with recent budget cuts impacting the nation’s fifth largest public school district’s ability to offset field trip costs without passing the cost to families. The museum takes pride in living its mission and continually strives to make its award-winning programs available to all. A child’s desire to learn and discover new ideas knows no economic or cultural barriers. Unfortunately, for some children, access to informal educational opportunities – like a visit to a museum – are determined by the dollars and cents. Additional funds are currently needed to provide subsidized admission
for Clark County children this year. With a gift of $1,000, you can open up the doors to the museum for an entire grade level of one school. We hope you will consider a donation in support of our Admission Subsidies Program. For more information about how you can help, contact the museum at 702.382.3445 and ask for the Development Department.
A MAGICAL EVENING IN SUPPORT OF THE MUSEUM Discovery Children’s Museum held a magical Masquerade Ball in early November at the Venetian/Palazzo honoring Sands Cares/Las Vegas Sands Corp. with The Great Friends to Kids award. Ball Co-Chairs Emily Goodman and Shari Wong welcomed nearly 600 guests who took red carpet photos by Cashman Photo Enterprises. Guests sipped cocktails generously provided by Southern Wine and Spirits, enjoyed entertainment by BESTAgency, Bob Anderson, Lily Wolfe and The Durango H.S. Choir with production support from Encore Productions, e11even Media and Wong Media Inc. The talented chefs and servers of the Venetian/Palazzo presented a gourmet dinner with desserts by The Cake Boss of TLC fame. An exciting live auction with Christian Kolberg and emcee Kevin Janison took place with all the event proceeds benefiting the Discovery Children's Museum and its education outreach programs. The event netted $364,017. and the Museum would like to thank all who were involved with this very successful evening.

The precursor to Black History Month was created in 1926 in the United States, when historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History announced the second week of February to be "Negro History Week." This week was chosen because it coincided with the birthday of Abraham Lincoln on February 12 and of Frederick Douglass on February 14, both of which dates black communities had celebrated together since the late 19th century. By the time of Woodson's death in 1950, Negro History Week had become a central part of African American life and substantial progress had been made in bringing more Americans to appreciate the celebration. At mid–century, mayors of cities nationwide issued proclamations noting Negro History Week. The celebration was expanded to a month in 1976, the nation's bicentennial. President Gerald R. Ford urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the toooften neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” That year, 50 years after the first celebration, the association held the first African American History Month. By this time, the entire nation had come to recognize the importance of black history in the drama of the American story. Since then each American president has issued African American History Month proclamations. Join us in celebrating some of the accomplishments, contributions and legacies of various individuals of African American descent and the past leaders of our country.
