7 BACHELOR'S KITCHEN I

H

February is here - a dreadful month for all bachelors out here. It is the time of year when we have to adapt to the romantic moods and treat the ladies right. But who said we as the Association of Bachelors can’t get romance right? If you are panicking, don’t because The Bachelor has you covered.

ere are some of tricks that will most definitely impress the lady you have in mind. Stuff to get you going and have someone between the sheets on D- Day. First of all, you have to ensure that she spends the night at your place on the 13th. Find an excuse if you have to but she has to come and sleep over. Being a seasoned bachelor, convincing her shouldn’t be that hard. Also en

sure you order in with GLOVO for some pizza or takeout. Prepare everything beforehand. Have some fine wine stored somewhere in the fridge. Chocolates and flowers will also come in handy. Allow your flowers to sock in water so as to maintain their freshness and color. The chocolates should also be something unique, but beware, some people don’t like chocolate. You don’t want to ruin the mood now.

8 BACHELOR'S KITCHEN I

Breakfast in Bed Watch a movie or something until she falls asleep. Wake up early while she is still asleep and begin the magic. Get grooving by placing some flowers by the bedside for her when she wakes up. Also light up the room up nicely and softly so that she wakes up to that Nothing screams romance like breakfast in bed. Let’s face it, whether you love or despise Valentine’s day, breakfast is the most important meal of the day so why not fix your loved one some while showing off your bachelor kitchen skills. Prepare some easy quick fix pancakes or some red velvet crepes as she waits in bed munching over the leftover pizza. Remember to put on some good romantic music playlist. You can’t go wrong with Sauti Sol or a custom-made playlist of her favorite jams. You can also make bacon and serve it up in a heart shape. What says love more that Baecon? Prepare some steamy shower for her with some petals on the ground.

Ensure the room smells of some lovely fragrances. Have her favorite attire or even just prepare her attire for the day waiting for her and watch her stun in it. If you are driving, make sure you open the door for her. If not, make sure to order an Uber for her. Walk her down to the parking. Open the door for her and kiss her forehead after a light peck then finally say the magic words while giving her a container of cookies or a bouquet of flowers. Have a copy of her favorite book or a book both of you love waiting for her when she gets back. You can also buy her a new book – one she will definitely enjoy. You can’t go wrong with books. In case she isn’t a book person, then find something she likes – be it a music instrument or something else. You will definitely get your groove right if you follow yours’ truly advice.

Pizza should be made fresh for every customer, rather than making several at once like some sort of assembly line. This ensures that the pizza is freshly made for your experience. Here’s a guide to this city’s best pizza.

S

omeone once said that finding a really good pizza in Nairobi is like finding a lost friend on Moi Avenue. It is a nearly impossible task. This is because you have to consider a lot of stuff before ordering a pizza you like; ingredients, preparation and of course the price. Unlike other foods, pizza is must be made to order. There’s nothing worse than stale pizza. Pizza should be made fresh for every customer, rather than making several at once like some sort of assembly line. This ensures that the pizza is freshly made for your experience. Luckily, we have a lot of places in Nairobi where you are assured to have some of the best pizza in town.

27 WINE WITH ME

Love Bites Back VERA after causing a commotion with Frank tries to keep her mind of it but lands directly into another mess. Two days ago we had this family gathering ,kama kawaida there was the talk, all was well until people stoped engaging themselves in conversations why?Technology had taken over,my mom said something that got my attention, something that I think all men should know. She talked about how life in the 60’s was challenging yet beautiful at the same time ,they’d all gather up and surround their grand mother ready for some story telling, thought that was the most amazing experience ever, but that’s not what caught my attention she told us about a certain story, and the lesson behind it was to be cautious with women, under no circumstance should a man lay his hand on a woman ,no matter how provocative she is,that’s something that no man should ever do. Vera’s encounter with Frank at the club was still not forgotten, she was still filled with rage, never before has a man laid hands on her, not even her dad,Frank had done the most unthinkable thing ever. Vera had given herself some time off from social media, she needed some alone time to clear her head up for a while, that was the first time she felt like not celebrating valentines, nothing Frank would do or say could make her feel better, she resented him,at least that’s what she thought. It had been four days to valentines and Frank had not yet shown any signs of apology, no sorry, nothing, just his normal cold hearted self, all she wanted from him at that moment was an apology, that two letter word worked magic, who doesn’t know that the way to a woman’s heart is through an apology.

I came to pick up one or two things about relationships what you may ask, ever thought of why most of them don’t lead to marriage?why most people date for months or a few years then break up?Well let me fill you in on some info, pride and ego is the key thing to breaking up a promising relationship,if couples find a way to work that out then they’ll have nothing to worry about, learn to apologize if your on the wrong. Ivy had noticed the sudden change on Vera, the first four days was a little bit normal but things just got worse as days went by,love can have such a strong impact on someone,I think that’s why it’s always advisable to love with your mind too and not just your heart to avoid the what ifs. Valentines was such a busy day for florists hiyo ni siku bizna hushika mbaya, everyone wants to make their girl happy,as the saying goes a happy life,a happy wife, hakuna makasiriko. “Will meet you at your place in about 2 hours,”That’s the first text from Frank she received since their last encounter, well that was rude. They had to have a talk Frank was taking this too far, they used to have lots of fun on valentines but now it’s just a normal day to her.Ding dong she heard her door bell,as much as she was still upset, she didn't’t want to miss out on the 14th of feb just coz of a mans ego,she dressed to kill obviously,I mean guys it’s Vera. Frank was standing on her doorstep with a big bouquet of flowers,a large pizza and a bottle of belaire, this she didn't’t expect. He’s got ego for sure but a luo man surly does know how to treat a woman, who could say no to that, the night was still young,Vera forgot about what Frank did to her she only had 3 hours with him she had to make it count.

28 KIBANDASKI

The Athi River Chapo Mums Making Kenyan soft layered chapo is fun. However, fun is not for everyone, that's why there are those most who prefer Direct chapati and Athi River mums

I

am a chapo guy. Chapo with beans or ndengu is my favourite meal. I know my chapo really well. Due to my chapo love, I have found a lot of good chapos from many a kibandaski. However, finding awesomely good chapo at a kibandaski is really rare. Good chapos come from mums and Athi River.

Therefore, it is only fitting that our first Kibandaski adventure of the new year is a chapo affair.I was heading down to Athi River for some Media & Communication conference at Daystar University main campus. It’s not often that you get to Athi so I was really enthusiastic about the small adventure drive. The institution is like an oasis in the desert. Green trees immediately hit you at the gate and the inside is really pretty. A small buzzing community of students and the locals make up the area around the school. They offered us some ‘bitings’ for lunch but luckily my cousin Aloha is a student there. I told him to take me off campus for some real food. Alfines Restaurant is just a few metres next to the Daystar gate. The place is downstairs on a one storey building. The main ‘reception’ area is a fairly small area with just a couple of high seats. The fries are fried here. A fridge full of milk and mala is also placed beside a microwave. The sitting area is an extended area with four tables each having space for at least six people.

A tv that has been placed inside a metal cage is placed at the top of one corner. The sitting and main area are open and only separated by a pathway Three guys work there; Stevo, Mlonzi and some guy whose name I forgot. All of them cook. We got in sat at the sitting area. The waiter came and Aloha ordered for ‘Special mbili za ndengu. For 100/- bob each.’ This is the local signature food and goes for 80/- and 100/. I was eager to see this special plate and I must say I was surprised. Alfines use those huge metal plates that are semi divided into subsections. Special is chapo chopped into many small pieces mixed with ndengu / beans with a slide of fries and some more soup. The chapo at Alfines is like no other. It tastes different from anything you know. The special combination is an experience on its own. Who knew chapos could go with fries. The 100 bob plate gets you three chapos while the 80 bob two. With the Alfines special however, it is a case of two chapos are kidogo while three might be too much. Alfines have other foods; fries, mayai and ugali and even pilau but their ‘Speials menu’ is a work of art. You can also get the Pilau special – pilau, fries, salad – for 120 /-. The chapo ndengu special is however a must have at Alfines.

29 DISHY TREATS

Topping the Top Sick and tired of the same old pepperoni, sausage, boerwores, mushroom, peppers and onions pizza toppings? So are we. But luckily, we’ve got the Italians to teach us the Pizzeria Classic ways. Buon Appetito

I

cannot even begin to tell you how much pizza I had during my recent trip to Italy. One of the things that most jumped out at me while I was there is how simple they like to keep their toppings: it’s never more than three elements. Their pizza does not come overflowing with toppings. This collection of 7 is a handy guide for those planning to add on a few tips to some of the best pizza toppings in italian pizza recipes. So…what are you waiting for? Browse through and get into the kitchen to make pizza like an Italian!

TUSCAN SAUSAGE This meaty topping is just a tiny hint spicy. Pair it with a creamy white cheese base, and every bite will leave you with an inclination to move to Tuscany.

EGGPLANT The eggplant melts in your mouth and its soft and rich texture upgrades the regular cheese and tomato sauce option, while still keeping a more classic flavor. It’s perfect for those who want to venture out of their pizza comfort zone without changing things up too drastically.

TRUFFLE This creamy, savory topping wraps around your tastebuds, covering them with richness and decadence. You won’t regret forgoing the classic tomato sauce for this thicker, more flavorful gem.

30 DISHY TREATS

TRAPIZZINO The dough is crispy and seasoned to perfection, while the fillings aren’t your average cheese and pepperoni. The aubergines parmigiana flavor tastes like a creamier version of pizza loaded with grilled veggies. It’s absolutely delicious and flavorful.

FOUR CHEESE WITH BLUE CHEESE, PEAR, WALNUT & HONEY This four cheese pizza is this sweet, piquant flavor combining the best of classic fruit, cheese and honey pairings. The drizzled honey and creamy cheese is balanced by the sharp flavor of walnuts and blue cheese for unbeatable flavor.

PUMPKIN & PROSCIUTTO This pizza’s smooth, slightly sweet pumpkin sauce is the nectar of the pizza-making gods and pairs surprisingly perfectly with Italy’s go-to choice of meat: smoky, lightly salted, tender prosciutto.

BURRATA Because mozzarella is a little too basic, try its sister, burrata. It’s lighter, softer and more flavorful, and it’s made from mozzarella and cream.

If someone approached you today and asked you what love was what would be your answer? I know what you are thinking, why on earth would some random guy ask me such an absurd question well here’s why. IVY KABEI narrates We’ve all heard cases where by people go to extreme levels of ending their lives in the name of love, most folks blame men,” Men are dogs,” right? well let me enlighten you a little bit when you look at your fingers what do you see? Turns out Brenda’s crush didn’t turn out to be the great guy she thought he would, the guy was a slimy douchebag,we all know that feeling of disappointment when someone intrigues you into a certain emotional state whereby you feel like they are the one but at the end you come to realize that they were only using you as their pity love, that’s so messed up, you don’t play with someone’s emotions to that level,it’s either you love me or you don’t period, that’s some real Karma there . The girls found some Gorgeous dresses that were going to show off some curves and a little bit of skin,Valentine’s vibe had just began. It’s really exciting by the way remember when we were growing up,how life was tough so eating chapati was during Christmas only, well to some of us valentines was that day, some of us only get gifts on valentines of which is really wrong and sad, you don’t have to appreciate your loved one on 14th feb only, that’s something you have to do frequently willingly you don’t have to be reminded by a calendar in order to do it. The weather was a little chilly when grace woke up, well it was the big day the weather was just respecting the theme of the day, Grace really wished yang was there so that they could celebrate the big day together but circumstances couldn’t allow that, there was traffic as usual, busy Nairobi. As Grace walked in her office she couldn’t believe her eyes, there was a bottle of Moet, a big bar of chocolate and a bouquet of beautiful rose flowers, but who did this, it couldn’t be yang, could it?Could this day get any better.

The Imperial Rose

From the house of Moët & Chandon the latest love portion is served. A spontaneous, radiant, romantic expression of style, a style distinguished by its bright fruitiness, its seductive palate and its elegant maturity. Let’s talk Love, Imperial love. Imperial Rose

Many consider the Moët & Chandon Rose imperial to be a champagne of love, maybe it’s because of the Pinot Noir grapes or if you prefer; the pink look and feel. However, to foodies like myself this champagne fits my Valentine’s agenda simply by how it pairs with food. When pairing the Rosé Impérial with food, it is important to remember that rosé is not, contrary to a common misconception, a sweet variety but rather a veritable “brut” champagne. Rosé Impérial is best paired with the summer foods, in particular with Italian dishes flavored with olive oils and tomatoes that are naturally flavorful and uncomplicated, to enhance both the elegant simplicity of the champagne and the quality of the food ingredients. As much as I’m not a chef, I would recommend pairing Moët & Chandon Rosé Impérial with dishes that complement the champagne’s pink color with ambry highlights, namely red meat served raw or grilled, red tuna and crustaceans, summer legumes, black olives and intense cheeses. On an ideal menu, the chef de cuisine would propose a beef carpaccio served with olive oil and ground pepper, a beef tartar, a vitello tonnato, fried mullet filets in a coriander emulsion, a lobster bisque, or mussels in a chorizo broth. To respect a chromatic harmony with the champagne, tomato-based dishes like pizzetta or bruschetta, a gazpacho of red peppers with basil and olive oil, or a ratatouille of fresh vegetables, would work well. A dish of green peas ravioli with mussels in curry and lemongrass would also provide an enchanting pairing. Given the low dosage of Rosé Impérial, a red summer fruit salad adorned with mint leaves, a basil and curcuma strawberry soup, a watermelon and basil sorbet, or a frozen raspberry soufflé with pistachio, would conclude the meal on a sweet note.

BRUNCH IN

Milan

There was a time that bar and restaurant were two completely different things. A bar was for drinking and all food matters were left for restaurants. Mixing the two was an unthinkable idea. It wouldn’t even have crossed your mind. I mean, how could people eat and drink at the same time? Times have changed and today this is the new trend.

Right at the center of this new revolution is Milan Bar Kenya. Located along Chiromo Road, the club is setting the pace for other bars with their Sunday Brunch. Hosted by the lovely former model Ekuam, Sunday Brunch at Milan is their weekly thing that sees people come and enjoy good food and then party afterwards all at the same place.

59. LOCAL LICKS 48 LOCAL LICKS

Sunday Brunch begins from 1pm till late. What makes this even more unique is that the food is of top quality as of 5-star restaurants and that there are also various drinking games available. From ‘Scrabble’ to ‘Never Have I Ever’ various games are available for each table.

The Brunch is such a huge thing that the place is full every Sunday. Celebrities and guest DJs randomly pop in to have a taste of the unique experience. This is not your normal brunch seeing that you also have to dress for the occasion. Afterall, it is a celebration of food and drinks.

Their menu includes breakfast dishes, salads and sandwiches, steaks and meat platters, chicken, beef and shrimp stir-fries as well as desserts and smoothies – it basically has everything you will find in a restaurant but with a customized ‘Milan’ touch. They have also adequately trained their staff to handle what people once thought would be an impossible and complex thing.

The trend is slowly spreading to other Nairobi joints. However, none of them do it better than Milan. As Milan put it, the plan is to Eat, drink, play games, listen to some good music. Rinse, Repeat.

49 JUST BOOZE

Sacred Loyalty

I

n life, you should be completely loyal to two things; your wife and your barber. The rest can have some room for compromise. I didn’t make the rules, so kindly don’t shoot the messenger. I am not married so all my loyalty should ideally be reserved for my guy Omosh. I met Omosh back in 2018. He works at his brother’s shop around Yaya Centre, ten minutes from where I live. He is a funny lad. You don’t get ‘funny’ from barbers that easily. He likes three things; cutting hair, eating fish and Manchester United - oh yes, he is a really loud character. I like Omosh, I really do. We have that good customer – client relationship. Plus, he knows my head - I’d trust him to cut my hair even with a blindfold on. I would never be disloyal to Omosh. I mean, I get my hair cut by different guys once or twice when I travel but when I’m home he is my guy. I don’t remember how we met. Who remembers how they met their barber? I have tried to think about it but nothing. It’s funny how hard it can be remembering how you met someone. However, one thing I remember is how shocked he was when he found out I actually get paid to write. That I own Betsy baffles him even more. I have a feeling that deep down he wants to ask me how much I’m paid. I was recently invited to a wedding and my first though was ‘Ugh. What could be more cliché than a

February wedding?’ I didn’t know the couple really well but apparently the bride likes reading. She said she ‘loves my work’ and wanted me to ‘write about their wedding from my perspective’. This was a first; attending a stranger’s wedding. Oh and also getting paid to write about a wedding. I am not much of a wedding guy, but doing the thing pro bono felt like the right thing to do. Besides, now I wouldn’t have to show up with wedding day presents. It was a pleasantly sunny Saturday morning. You know those sunny mornings that just feel different. The church service was to begin at 11 a.m., but Kenyans wouldn’t be Kenyans if they didn’t get late. Plus, who is in a hurry to get married? The service began at 11.45 and I must say that Catholic Church matched the splendour of the event. Rows of rose flowers were laid everywhere. It was a rosy affair. After the ceremony, just as I was saying ‘hi’ and introducing myself to almost everyone, Omosh pops up from out of nowhere. He was in a fairly huge suit, his smile out of this world. I was happy to see him. It was weird but really nice. Trust me, meeting your barber at a wedding, smiling and all dressed in a suit will make you need a drink. So I offered him a ride to the reception ceremony at and opened a bottle of Jameson in the car. This was a bottle to celebrate our new friendship level.

When you have a strong grip, you are able to lift heavier weights in the gym. Especially in pulling movements such as deadlifts, rows, pull-ups, and chin-ups, a solid grip that you can call upon will help you increase your training results by increasing strength. Stronger Grip = Better Endurance. NICK OLENYO Explains Training GRIP We spend a lot of time working our arms, legs, heart, lungs—but maybe not our hands. Which is a shame, because grip strength is helpful for other exercises, and can be a goal in itself. We’re going to start with the most popular, but paradoxically least useful, hand exercise: grippers.

If you’re only training with grippers, you’re missing out on a lot of the things your hands should be able to do. People who train grip tend to break exercises down into different types of grip, including: Crush grip, in which your fingers are curling or squeezing against resistance. This is what grippers work.
