LOWERING CARBON FOOTPRINT

Fossil fuels have dominated the world’s primary energy supply for the last century, but a transition to a more integrated and low carbon energy system is now gathering momentum

The transition may seem slow because the replacement energy providers mainly wind and solar PV start from a very low share. The quest to lower the carbon footprint of fossil fuel production and consumption is accelerating, both technologically and in terms of affordability, such that the next decade will witness some key tipping points in the energy landscape.

The present shift in the energy mix is both market and policy driven, with climate related concerns, amplified by youth activism, expected to have a significant regulatory impact Local pollution and environmental problems are also playing a part in driving this transition, in addition to a geopolitical trend of reducing dependency on energy imports

The shift towards low carbon energy systems is taking place in all industry sectors and across all world regions. Reducing emissions from our homes and buildings is one of the most important things we can do to help end Kenya’s contribution to climate change. Households in Kaptagat are rapidly transitioning to low carbon energy use after WWF Kenya, through the UK PACT Greening Kaptagat project , installed biogas units in their homesteads

6 T H E M A S T E R C L A S S

WWF Kenya is constantly encouraging more community members to adopt biogas technology "This is the time to transition from dirty energy (fuelwood) to clean energy," Dr Chris Kiptoo, Principal Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forestry

TOEATORNOT TOEAT

Every community in the world has its signature foods Kenya is no different You can try a number of different local delicacies in Kenya which will satisfy your taste buds in every way possible. Internationally, we are famed for our nyama choma and ugali downed with a bottle of Tusker However, in the midst of all this glory, Kenya has its fair share of weird foods, they may differ from tribe to tribe but here is a roundup of the most unusual local delicacies that require an acquired taste

Cow blood

Drinking blood isn't as traumatic to the body as you think The maasai community pierce a vein on the cow to draw some blood, then mix it with milk and put it on gourds before they drink it Other communities here cook the ‘liquid meat’ it hardens and tastes like liver.

Termites

When it rains in Kenya termites come off their nests and swarms happen when colonies have winged female and males and they have to mate Some people take this opportunity to catch the insects They eat them raw (after removing the head which is too crunchy because of the hard jaws) or fry them in a pan They taste better when cooked

Chicken head and feet

Next times you are enjoying that baked chicken don’t throw away the feet and head. When washed thoroughly, boiled then put to roast the becomes a little gelatinous in texture It’s the proper seasoning that makes it so pungent and strong tasting, with an acquired taste If you’re feeling brave, you can try this tasty dish for yourself but the bones get on your nerves after a while

Mandazi Pasua

Mandazi is a Kenyan pastry made with deep fried dough This breakfast must have in Kenyan household, is modified to whats commonly reffered as Mandazi Pasua Basically the mandazi is split open stashed with anything ranging from chips/ frys and mutura (intestine encased mixture of minced pieces of cow or goat meat, tripe, and cooled blood that's been flavored with onions, salt, pepper, and chili) Very unusual but delicious!

Mashakura

Pretty much summed up in the name, this is often a main dish served on a platter with one or more side dishes, such as a salad or french fries In Kenya the mashakura dry platter is made of Kuku Kienyeji, mukimo, boiled maize, boiled cabbages with sprinkling of kachumbari

Goat head

Considering how many places it’s eaten, perhaps it’s unfair to deem this weird. Still, it’s made mostly of goat head roasted on flames to burn off the hair and to give it some flavor The head is then boiled for hours before being split open to eat all the gooey meat inside including the brains! The goat head is boiled for many more days, and people keep drinking the soup

to it!

The prevailing culinary wisdom here in Kenya is that burgers pair best with hoppy beers. We don’t disagree. Hops are a nice way to cut through fat and bolder flavors in a burger’s toppings.

N G F O R

Although any beer will taste delightful with a classic burger (topped with a classic beef burger with cheddar or cheese, pickles, lettuce, onion, ketchup, mustard, and potentially mayo), getting Hop House 13 beer (#HH13KE) specifically is the greatest way to go. The citrusy and often sweet perceiving aspect of the larger is a wonderful counterpoint to a classic burger’s unctuous fat, cheese, and condiments for you to enjoy that burgery bite.

Cycles of Blame

While open, honest dialogue is always the best course of action, it doesn’t always yield open, honest results when you ’ re dealing with a deceitful people FAITH RONO narrates the confrontation plan

I was now wondering what could have made the two ladies come to a final agreement I had Joyce call me I hurriedly went there and listen to what they had to say

As we all sat there each of us with our drinks, Joyce and Rahab took us back to when we were in High school They could talk of how our high school life was and tried to apologize for all the times they made me feel out of place Deep inside me, this was too late for them to apologize since they could salvage nothing

The two ladies opened up to how foolish they were to be lured by one guy, Mr Dickson. They could share the similar stories and similar places Dickson took them This time, I was only listening to them Part of me was feeling guilty but another part of me was not remorseful at all They deserved what was going to come their way As they were talking, this part of their story hit me hard The part where they could b th l i f h th ot infected with some em without any of us had already happened. ytime we spent a night

They made me feel out of place instead of feeling at ease We were all going down together Together, they were planning on how they were going to avenge on Dickson

This time, I was not sure if Dickson knew his status. The two ladies on the other side could only think of the few STI's aside from now HIV virus I was curious to listen to what their plan could be It was hard to tell who was hurt the most between the two I knew Dickson had nothing to lose since he got what he wanted and knew at the end he could not end up with any of the two ladies

"Hey, girls, has any of you two ever taken some full checkup test? Using only the finest natural ingredients, Bila Shaka brewery has wide range of award winning craft beers that are carefully crafted in their brewery based in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya. Based in Kedong Valley along the edge of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, the independent brewery ensures all their beers are hand forged Purposing to produce the best craft beer in Kenya, the brew masters run on 100% renewable energy All their beers are brewed using biofuel as their electrical energy is sourced from geothermal power Their effort to minimize waste is unmatched This is why they have a policy on refundable cash for all bottles returned and are recycled to be used multiple times to ensure minimal waste. Masking as more than just a brewery the booze manufacturers also protect thousands of acres of forest and are reforesting areas that have been damaged by excessive grazing and hacking

You might assume that all beer is vegan Despite being brewed from plant based ingredients, many beers are clarified using ‘finings’ of animal origin (gelatine from cows and pigs and issinglass from fish bladders) In addition, lactose is often used to build body in stouts and beers...but not for the experienced brewers! Instead, they store their beers far longer than the industry standard, giving the yeast and protein sufficient time to naturally settle out and then in some of their beers they use state of the art clarification that means they use zero animal products at any point in our production They are stocked all over Kenya and have tap rooms at The Sarit Centre, Village Market and Nairobi Street Kitchen You can try out a range of new craft beer straight from the brewery

Betrayal Trauma

Some things can’t be repaired. We are a social species; when someone betrays us, it’s a real threat to our wellbeing With the truth unfolding, anger was poring over the destruction of our friendship, the feeble friendship ties was experiencing treachery and trauma Grab your Ballantine’s Whisky as DANIEL NDIWA narrates the trauma

Betrayal by a friend is not something you can just laugh off. The very place where you should be able to get help and protection from the harms of life becomes the source of harm. However coined the term “betrayal trauma” to describe the pain such treachery can cause was nothing short of brilliance I was left there rooted to the ground with myriads of thoughts lingering in my mind on the call to action I had a bad gut feeling about the possible outcome, but I convinced myself to keep calm

After all, the goose was already cooked. I sat deep as I overheard the rising confrontation between Ezra and the girlfriend, Nana Nana kept sobbing even as Ezra’s voice roared past the walls Abel had to intervene by pulling Ezra out before he could do something he would have regretted I kept my cool, ready to explain any bit of my action with a resounding alibi

Ezra stormed past the dining table and served himself a Ballantine shot before turning to me with a killer mode “It’s not what you think?” I chimed in before extending an invitation to understand Although enraged, I did my best to calm the space before explaining that Nana had requested to run something by me and she had insisted that it was of utter importance to her and your relationship

This was the reason why I deviated my trip back to Ezra’s house. Alex questioned why I had failed to notify them at first of even via call, but I argued I thought it was a brief thing that wouldn’t take time and I would be off

“Have you even heard her side of the story?” I cut in what seemed to be an interrogation “Bros we men need to read into situations at times, not to blow things out of proportion.” I urged Ezra as I put a shot of the fine whiskey to keep me going It turned out to be that Nana was had gone through a miscarriage on what was to be Ezra’s first kid She was so broken that, she was willing to ask for a spam donor just to keep the relationship lasting Our text chats were all about spam donation advice, something I advised her against. Ezra had only reacted to the first chats with Nana, and that’s why he was breathing fire. There was no degree of betrayal although it looked as though we were gossiping uncharitably behind their backs Anyone could have thought this was hardly Judas kissing Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, but that was not the case I left the two to talk as I walked out with Alex Things were definitely thicker in their relationship and it not only needed a seat down

Anyone could have thought this was hardly Judas kissing Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, but that was not the case

Biking Circuit

REASONS TO TAKE ON THE SANGIRIA CIRCUIT WITH TUBIKE

1.The famous Karura Forest Sigiria, which is accessible through Thigiri Lane is a great biking path from Westlands to Muthaiga around Karura Forest to the United Nations. The other direct access to the trail is from the ‘Sharks Gate’ (Gate C) entrance off Kiambu Road

2 There are three designated trails at Sigiria 5km, 10km for people to explore with an average of 1 h 30 min to complete and the newly refurbished Matembezi trail, which is ideally meant for persons with disability.

3. Ride through thick forest trails mingling with drifters and get to learn something new about mountain biking skills from their guest guides

4 For only 1500/ for subscribed members and 2500/ for non members you get in motorless motion with the drifters. This comes with the bike, a helmet and a bottle of water

5. This route winds through the trails at Karura Forest. The park is a secure, well fenced and patrolled forest in the heart of Nairobi with well marked trails

6 Along this route, you can get off the bike and visit the Karura Waterfalls at junction marker number 26 or 25 on the Mau Mau Trail.

7. Early biking guarantees you the heavenly sounds of chirping birds, howling monkeys and buzzing insects.

8. The Tubike guides will educate and teach you more about Bike Etiquette, when to shout “Coming through!” or “Track left/right!” and when to ring the bell

9 Unlike the Karura Limuru road and Kiambu road sections, Sigiria is not crowded

10 You can enjoy the trail as early as 6am (When the forest opens) and closes at 6pm daily Last entry is at 5:45pm while the gates are locked at 7pm

11 You can wind down after the circuit at the revamped Sigiria picnic site, a much more “bush like” experience within a charming African olive grove near Gate F. Damages are only Ksh 150/= for adult picnickers and 100/= for kids under 12

12 Other fun activities at the park include tree planting, horse riding, mountain biking and bird watching.

Darkest Hours

I celebrate the power and courage of women everywhere who are willing to step out, share and relive what has happened to them In doing so, they have created an opportunity to disrupt how our society views women But clearly they have not changed nearly enough Peris narrates the terrible night after

Every day now we hear more accusations of sexual harassment, assault and rape against powerful and influential men It’s a sad thing But what’s worse is that these types of behaviours have not only been tolerated in every area of our world, but in many cases they have been encouraged Most of the men around me have not been surprised to learn the extent of these behaviours, and understand the conditions that have allowed them to happen But they also believe that many more revelations of such deplorable behaviour will continue to come out I woke up feeling very hangover Probably because of the parting shots as we staggered outside It was another regrettably familiar wake up for me, this time in Kilimani Much of my memory from the previous night was blank I vividly remember staggering from the lift and then having some gin shots but then after that a shadow drops over my memories

How did I get here? What time did we get the pizza? I just kind of laughed it off as I reached for my phone that was charging on the bed side Not that this seemed normal to me but It wasn’t a bizarre Martin was still snoring dead asleep It must have been a good night There was still some gin on the bottle so I served myself some shots to kick start the day Despite all the efforts to call my Hanna, her phone was still off This was now very weird, it was unlike her

She always scrammed her way to ensure that she is reachable especially by this time of the day I was getting stressed so I decided to sleep it off before going home

I was woken up a pop sound from my phone. It was Hanna, her phone was finally on I hurriedly called her back but unfortunately she didn’t pick up I rang her three more times

Finally, she picked. Her voice sounded weak and terrified She sounded as though she had a gun pointed to her if not more of someone in hiding I could barely hear her but she breathe pulse was low “Where are you Hanna? Please tell me you are okey,” I stammered with tears balancing my eyes

All my fears were being reaffirmed at this point and my gut feeling was even stronger Jeff wasn’t as clean as he pretended. I could tell she was drugged so I hurriedly dressed up and ordered an Uber to Jeffs place Luckily, it wasn’t that far from Marto’s place Enroute to where she was my mind was buzzing with thoughts with questions lingering of how Hanna was. I tried to keep calm as we parked outside the apartment gate I walked straight up to the elevators and went up to the top floor where his crib was nested

“Hanna! Open the door,” I roared as I banged the door I was growing impatient with every bang getting louder After what seemed eternity, Jeff opened and I stormed in assuring him that he’d rather pray my siz is okey.

I broke down at the first site There she was Lying like a dead log with empty bottles, syringe needles flanking her She was experiencing drug fuelled blackouts a colloquial term with potentially serious consequences “Jefffff!” I scream

Ulterior Motives

Some people are like shiny pennies Their sparkle can dazzle you into believing they may hold the key to an easy path or a secret shortcut to your desired destination, and for this reason you want them to be a part of your life These are the people that you feel are ‘good to know ’ Yet DANIEL NDHIWA narrates

I constantly remind the boys that the company you keep reveals a lot about your values and who you are You are compelled towards different relationships for different reasons. You may love spending time with family and friends because you have a shared past Or with people who have similar interests and like the same activities You may have one friend who makes you laugh like no one else (very compelling!) or a new partner you adore and can’t wait to learn more about. And then there are the people that you spend time with simply because they have something you want Perhaps you believe they have the power to further your cause or elevate your status

6 2 O N T H E C O U N T E R

Hopefully, you just want it good Getting really honest about what is driving you in a relationship is the quickest way to uncover your motives Maggie was willing and ready to give it all in to rediscover the flame in their relationship without reevaluating the looming outcome

Kim had played it all cool and was ready for the clean slate However, this had all come together too quickly. I might have been wrong, but this didn’t just sound right “A toast to the rekindled flame,” I raised for a toast as the merry filled crowd sunk in with their beer bottles I then ordered another round of KO ginger beer and two shots of Tambuzi Gin for Kim and the girlfriend. The night moved on smoothly with Mary, the waitress, keeping the flow steady Maggie seemed very jovial and genuinely happy. You could tell from her high spirits She couldn’t even keep calm Kim on the other hand looked more chilled and calm as though he had mixed feelings on the decision he had just made He watched keenly as Maggie went on making merry and preaching to the world how she was drunk in love to her baby daddy.

“Hey Kim, you are a lucky man,” I cut in his thoughts as I drew my seat near him. “Maggie is so elated, while you look as though you’re mourning!” I continued and I cheered him to talk about it. He looked reluctant at first but few beers in he started to rant out The dude had gone through hell under the arms of Maggie. He had fallen into depression twice for all the ill treatments and mental harm Maggie had walked him through

I could feel the pain in his voice even as he continued to narrate how Maggie went on to have an affair with his boss, what could eventually result for him getting laid off work Kim had tried almost everything to mend fences with Maggie, all in vain.

According to Kim, Maggie had bi polar and this face value that she showed here is just the pretty side Her alter ego was embodiment of Jezebel if not worse We continued our chit chat deep into the night. Maggie was now getting drunk and so were we She was dancing with the boys in a suggestive manner, something that kept Kim breathing fire Maybe what Kim was saying had some tints of truth in it On any other night, Maggie could have been a lose bait for any of the boys “You see what I was telling you about!” ranted Kim as he chugged his beer and picked his car keys before storming out That was unlike the calm and collected personality he had shown the whole night

I feared for Maggie, although anyone could have understood she was just celebrating getting ‘love of his life’ back. I whispered to Maggie to go home as Kim had stepped out but she seemed unperturbed “Come dance with me”, she whispered as she wrapped my hand in her waist. All this time Kim was watching from the patio He looked pale, with those killer instincts written all over his face. I retreated to my table before he joined me “You like her ?” he asked

There are occasions when we see things that aren’t really there in people or we hope for more than others can give. Life is a series of chances and occurrences; of mistakes, trial, and error
